Hi, your blog is SO good, omg!!! Just scrolled through the whole thing and I love it! So I was wondering, we know that Caden, Lev, and Zander used to be heretics but what were their witcheries?? Must have been something powerful or forbidden if they risked hiding it... Also, what did Eron do that was so bad he got kicked out of the brigade? I'm at a loss tbh. What are your thoughts?

first of all anon I AM SO SORRY FOR RESPONDING SO LATE!! u see i saw this ask and i was like huh i don’t really know the answers to all of that, and i was like i’ll reread parts of the book to see if i can come to a conclusion and i never did that and then i never answered u and for that i deeply apologize 🥺. i believe caden, lev, and zander’s witcheries were never specified. and see this is the question that stumped me the most: eron. i remember mentions of his dishonorable discharge, but here i am at loss too. i don’t think it was ever mentioned either... i think his dishonorable discharge could’ve been a front? i don’t doubt that he was kicked out but there’s definetly something big behind that story. remember when he was evacuating safi from the dance? the others from the brigade were showing respect toward him as they had never done before, and this was minutes before eron began to act foolishly “drunk” again.

honestly if anyone else would like to add on or help out that would be greatly appreciated!!

Does anybody have any thoughts on why Uncle Eron, Mathew, and Habim went to the Sightwitch convent and what they did there??

Based on the fact that Eron was allowed inside the glamour, I thinks it’s possible that it’s not the first time they have paid a visit to the convent

Truthwitch

Susan Dennard’s Truthwitch takes place in the Witchlands, a realm dominated by warring nations whose powers are only kept in check by the Twenty Year Truce. Iseult Det Midenzi, a Threadwitch, has the ability to see the threads that “bind,” “build,” and “break.” Her Threadsister, Safiya fon Hasstrel, is a Truthwitch—an individual with the ability to determine whether or not someone is telling the truth. The girls long to save up enough money to begin a quiet life of their own, but their plans are waylaid when they botch a thieving job and Safiya is named Emperor Henrick’s betrothed, making her “the future Empress of Cartorra” (Dennard 127). In order to avoid becoming a pawn in the Witchlands’ political games, Safiya is whisked away by her allies to a new life on the run. Safiya is pursued by Emperor Henrick’s agents who seek to return her to her betrothed, a vengeful Bloodwitch named Aeduan, and Vaness, the Empress of Marstok, who seeks to use Safiya’s power to her own ends. With the assistance of Prince Merik Nihar of Nubrevna, who is propelled by his interest in a trade agreement with Safiya’s uncle, Dom Eron, Iseult and Safiya make their way toward a port in Lejna where they will finally be free of danger and capable of living the lives of their choosing.

I didn’t like Dennard’s novel for several different reasons. The largest reason stems from the novel’s two main characters—Iseult Det Midenzi and Safiya fon Hasstrel—because they are fairly selfish characters with a tendency to make extremely poor decisions. For example, instead of listening to the instructions of her mentor, Mathew, Safiya chose to remove the salamander fiber blankets that masked her scent from the Bloodwitch. As a result, she exposed herself to various threats, which Mathew, Habim, her uncle Eron, and their allies sought to protect her from. Another example would be Iseult’s decision to allow Aeduan to remain alive when she could have finished him off. Iseult’s decision to spare Aeduan was extremely foolish because he vowed to track her down and kill her.

Another factor which contributed to my dislike of Dennard’s novel is its one-dimensional characters. For example, Safiya is bold, reckless, and impulsive. Vivia Nihar is both cunning and cruel; she is also determined to do anything it takes to gain complete control over Nubrevna. Mathew is extremely kind, his Heart-Thread, Habim, stoic and protective. With the exception of Evrane Nihar, Merik’s aunt, I didn’t care about any of the characters or what happened to them. I liked Evrane because she is kind-hearted, disciplined, and a healer who fights for what she believes in. The third factor that contributed to my disliking Truthwitch was the fact that I felt as though several of its major plot points were easy to predict. Examples include the Shadow’s identity and Safiya and Iseult’s status as the Cahr Awen. I also did not like the combat scenes that were present within the novel. I felt as though they lacked detail and were lazily written. Instead of leaving the reader with a clear indication of what was happening, the text briefly outlined any combat by using words and phrases such as “parried” or “twisted away.”

With that being said, there were a few things that I appreciated about the novel. The first was the presence of several different magical disciplines. Examples include Safiya’s truthwitchery and Iseult’s threadwitchery, which reminded me of auristics, (the magic that allows its users to read auras), because it provides Iseult with the ability to read other people’s emotions. Other examples include various healing magics and control over the elements, (e.g. windwitchery). The only thing that I did not like about Dennard’s magic system was that it was never explained. Where does a witches’ magic come from? Does magic stem from the Origin Wells or is it hereditary? What allows a Curse Witch to dampen the magic wielded by other witches? What allows a Curse Witch to strip a witch of their magic? My questions are endless. Second, I appreciated how the novel was extremely fast-paced—there was always something going on. Third, I felt as though the novel was well-organized—each chapter flowed neatly into the one that proceeded it.

The Bloodwitch scene where Leopold gets Iseult the book can only make me think that this is how a previous conversation must have gone

Leopold:  Wait.  What if Iseult does not trust me?

Mathew:  Oh shit

Habim:  Her favorite book is An Illustrated Guide to the Carawen Monastery, all right?  That had better be enough.  Now off you go

I really hope that Polly made friends with Safi, and then started scheming with Eron, and not the other way around..

I’d just hate for their friendship to be based on scheming and treachery is all...

Okay, I just wrote about this so now I'm thinking about it, and Habim told Safi that he had Caden, Lev, and Zander arrested and tortured because they are Hell-Bards who would obey the emperor if things came down to that.  But Habim is best fucking friends with a Hell-Bard, he's a Hell-Bard's man-at-arms, he's conspiring with a Hell-Bard to create a plan that will affect the entire continent.  That very Hell-Bard is, by all appearances, still subject to the same emperor who can command him on a whim.

This leads me to my point.  Either Eron is somehow no longer a Hell-Bard, in spite of the fact that he still wears the noose (I may have made a separate post about this theory, I'm not sure), or Habim was lying through his teeth when he said this was the only reason why he tortured these Hell-Bards.

Something I've been thinking about for the past few days:  apparently Firewitched flame, in spite of being magical, can scar Hell-Bards even though it doesn't cause them pain.  I'm not sure if this only happens if they're touching the fire for too long, but it clearly can happen.  Therefore, I think it would stand to reason that other types of magic might not kill them or even harm them, but it would have some effect.

So, all those scars that we know Caden, Lev, and Eron have.  I'd previously assumed it was something that happened during the process of being turned into a Hell-Bard, but looking back on it, it doesn't make much sense why they wouldn't all have scars in the same place from it when the same thing happened to them.  And while not impossible, it seems unrealistic that they'd have all those scars from completely non-magic, everyday occurrences because the placement (on Eron's fingers, on Caden's shoulders and torso, on Lev's literal face) just is bizarre.

This leads me to my theory that the scars are caused by 1) realizing that they're "invincible" and intentionally hurting themselves like the candle thing, or 2) realizing that they're a Hell-Bard now and just not caring if they're too reckless.  Thoughts?

I'm fairly sure I've said this before, but I really want to know the details of why happened involving Eron and Safi's parents.  It got him dishonorably discharged from the Hell-Bards.  How badly do you need to fuck up to get kicked out of the place that heretics and traitors get sent for punishment?  At what point does the emperor decide you're a lost cause and just kill you?

So if Domna fon Brusk is working as one of the participants of the plan that Leopold is also part of, and so is Eron, how many of the doms and domnas are a lot more loyal to Leopold than they are to Henrick?  Asking for reasons because he clearly would get support if he were to take the throne
