Austrian Artist Ernst Fuchs “The Spirit of Mercury”, 1954, 47x62cm, ink drawing on paper.
I was fortunate having met him on few occasions between 1974 and 1978 in Graz and Vienna, and even received positive feedbacks from him about my early works before I emigrated to France.
Ernst Fuchs (13 February 1930 – 9 November 2015) was an Austrian painter, draftsman, printmaker, sculptor, architect, stage designer, composer, poet, and one of the founders of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. In 1972, he acquired the derelict Otto Wagner Villa in Hütteldorf, which he restored and transformed. The villa was inaugurated as the Ernst Fuchs Museum in 1988.
At the Academy, he met Arik Brauer, Rudolf Hausner, Helmut Leherb, Fritz Janschka, Wolfgang Hutter, and Anton Lehmden, together with whom he later founded what has become known as the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism.[1] He was also a founding member of the Art-Club (1946), as well as the Hundsgruppe, set up in opposition to it in 1951, together with Friedensreich Hundertwasser and Arnulf Rainer.
Fuchs’ work of this period was influenced by the art of Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele and then by Max Pechstein, Heinrich Campendonk, Edvard Munch, Henry Moore and Pablo Picasso. During this time, seeking to achieve the vivid lighting effects achieved by such Old Masters as Albrecht Altdorfer, Albrecht Dürer, Matthias Grünewald and Martin Schongauer, he revived and adopted the mischtechnik (mixed technique) of painting. In the mischtechnik, egg tempera is used to build up volume, and is then glazed with oil paints mixed with resin, producing a jewel-like effect.

Nihil is a French artist living in Norway. Inspired by sacred texts, personal experiences, religious and psychedelic art, his work is a reflection on transcendence, identity and individuality. He depicts visions from our deepest unconscious, ancient figures lost in endless liminal landscapes, blind saints drowning in divine serenity and suffering.
Four personal exhibitions have been dedicated to his work in Paris, Berlin, Dublin and Nantes. He participated in more than fifty collective art shows around the world along with artists like David Lynch, Marilyn Manson, H.R. Giger, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Ernst Fuchs etc. His work is featured in two museums in Europe and in two galleries in the USA. His first artbook has been published in 2016 by Cyclic Press. He worked with The Royal Shakespeare Company, music labels Napalm Records and Season Of Mist, street artist C215, bands like Combichrist, Amenra, Hocico, Raison d’Être, Leprous and many more.

Arnulf Rainer

Zdzislaw Beksinski was born in Poland in the town of Sanok near the Carpathians Mountains in 1929. After a childhood was spent during the Second World War, Beksinski went on to university where he studied architecture in Cracow. Subsequent to this education he spent several years as a construction site supervisor, a job he hated, frought with pressures and countless boring details. He would soon throw himself into the arts. In 1958, Beksinski began to gain critical praise for his photography, and later went on to drawing. His highly detailed drawings are often quite large, and may remind some of the works of Ernst Fuchs in their intricate, and nearly obsessive rendering.
Beksinski eventually threw himself into painting with a passion, and worked constantly, always to the strains of classical music. He soon became the leading figure in contemporary Polish art.
Beksinski and his family moved to Warsaw in 1977. The artist had many exhibitions throughout his native Poland and Europe. He rarely attended any of them. Bekinski’s art hangs in the National Museums Warsaw, Sanok, Crakow, Poznan, and the Goteborgs Art Museum in Sweden. Zdzislaw Beksinski was murdered in his home during a robbery attempt in 2005.
