Moment Lasts Forever –Theatrical Review of Reunion

As the title suggests, Reunion is a story about class reunions. It all started from 1984, the year Wang and her classmates graduated. They decided that they will hold a class reunion every ten years. Although there might be ups and downs in their lives or quarrels between each other, they always show up at the reunion every time. With 27 Golden Bell Awards among the crew, Reunion successfully tells a wonderful story of life and friendship. The actors use their outstanding acting skills to portray the characters at different phases of life. Furthermore, the contrast between the changing and unchanged elements in the play deepen the sense of melancholy in life.

For the changing elements that indicate the passing of time, I divide them into three categories. First, props. The prop masters deliberately project slides of current events on two sides of the stage to give the audience a feeling of nostalgia and bring them back to the old times. Also, the evolution of mobile phones, from the old-fashioned portable phone, Nokia 3310, Ericsson R310 “shark”, Nokia 5130 Coca-Cola limited edition to contemporary smartphones, is another highlight that strikes a chord with the audience. Second, costumes, hairstyle, and make-up. As time goes by, the costumes, hairstyle and make-up change based on the fashion trend of the time. The elements which are once considered fashionable seems a bit comical at present. The feeling of wrongness brings a smile to the audience’s faces. Third, music and dance. Music is a really powerful tool to create an illusion of the past. At the era of disco and The Beatles, songs, such as Staying Alive or Yesterday, are really popular. The music supervisor strongly supports the play by choosing appropriate music to create the vibe of different periods. With all these changing elements, the audience can get a complete experience when time flies.

Time might change. People might change. However, the friendship will never change. For the unchanged elements that serve as the bedrock of the friendship among Wang and her classmates, I also divide them into three categories. First, the setting. The setting in Reunion is really economical. The art directors only build a two-story set, which is the restaurant where they hold the reunions, for the whole play. It seems to imply their long-lasting friendship. Second, personalities of characters. Everyone plays a certain role in a group, and it will remain forever as long as the person still stays in the group. There is no exception among Wang and her classmates. Take Wang and her bestie Yang as examples. Even many years later, Wang is still the one taking care of everyone, and Yang is still the one that nobody will let in on a secret. Another feature is that the characters will repeat the same line with different emotions and in different contexts to show the audience that there is a part of them remain unchanged. Third, the old memories. At the reunions, Wang and her classmates always tell the same story and laugh at the same ridiculous events. For them, it is the only connection with each other. The group might fall apart if they don’t grab it. With all these unchanged elements, the audience can feel the stability that lies in their lifelong friendship.

To sum up, Reunion effectively plays the contrast between change and eternity throughout the play. Besides, the metaphors and puns make the entire story more philosophical and interesting. These universal themes, friendship and life attract not only people who have been through those times but also young people who want to know what their parents’ youth looks like. After all, these long lasting moments are wonderful but rare.
