The AI Art Movement Has an Objectification Problem
The AI Art Movement Has an Objectification Problem
In 1999, the world’s first commercially available color video and camera phone arrived in the form of the Kyocera VP-210 in Japan. A year after its release, worries over the rapid rise in “up-skirt” voyeurism the phones enabled spread quickly throughout the country, prompting wireless carriers to institute a policy guaranteeing the phones they offered would feature a loud camera shutter noise…

Kyocera VP-210, the first camera phone in history
Kyocera VP-120: Today we take for granted that we can take relatively good pictures with our mobile phones. These incorporate increasingly sophisticated cameras and some manufacturers are even taking the first steps to place the front sensor below the screen . However, two decades ago this feature was a real novelty.
In 1999, the world's first camera mobile phone launch. It was the Kyocera VP-210. A terminal that, like many other models. Was only sold in Japan. The device featured a 0.11-megapixel CMOS sensor and a 5-centimeter (2-inch) reflective TFT LCD screen capable of displaying 65,000 colors.
Kyocera VP-210: The first with a camera and front!
In fact, we can see in the images is that it was a front camera. Of ocurse, it's internal storage space (and the only one available). Allowed a maximum of 20 JPEG images. Which could be sent by email. Also, the mobile phone could make video calls.
After all, Kyocera marketing also explained benefits of the video call system. "If a builder takes this phone to a construction site then they can show how the place is. Of course, video calls worked at only 2 frames per second. And it's operator DDI Pocket (now Ymobile) charged additional charges for data usage.
It also used the PHS mobile network (mainly available in Japan, China and Taiwan) whose antennas had a maximum range of hundreds of meters, as opposed to the range of kilometers of CDMA and GSM technologies.
Kyocera VP-210 Limited, but at the same time advanced for its time
At that time mobile phones only allowed voice calls and, in some cases, SMS, but Kyocera wanted to add one more functionality: to communicate with another person by seeing their face on the screen. Thus, the company worked for two years with its research and development team to bring the VP-210 to life.
However, the phone was not as successful as expected. Such as the fact that it was more expensive than the average of the time (it cost 40,000 yen. About 325 US dollars ) and it arrived at a time when the size of the components had not been reduced so much. For what its dimensions and weight were generous (140x54x29 mm and 165 g).
In June 2000, Samsung launched the SCH-V200 (on the left in the image above) in South Korea , with a 0.35 MP camera. In November of the same year, Sharp did the same in Japan with the J-SH04 , with a 0.11 MP sensor (on the right).
Kyocera VP-210: The truth is that mobile phone cameras have been improving considerably over time, an evolution that has caused a strong change in the industry and in consumers. Statista data makes it clear : digital camera sales fell 87% between 2010 and 2019.
nowadays We have ambitious terminals when it comes to photography. Among the best that we have been able to test this year is the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra , which has four rear cameras and a laser sensor. iPhone 13 Pro incorporates three rear cameras and the support of computational photography.

1990 photography
A lot happened in the 1990′s including some important things in the photography world like in 1990 Eastman Kodak announced the Photo Compact Disc as a digital image storage medium and then in 1999 Kyocera Corporation introduces the VP-210 VisualPhone, the world's first mobile phone with built-in camera for taking photos and recording videos. Adobe Photoshop 1.0 came out as the second professional image manipulation program. In 1993 the National Women in Photography Conference is held for the first time.
A lot of other historical events took place in the 1990′s like in 1990 nelson mandela was released after serving 27 years in prison for leading a campaign against the National Party's white-only government. In 1993 bill clinton became the 42nd president of the united states. In 1997 Spacecraft Pathfinder Landed On Mars.
Above is two portraits shot in 1990 of nelson and bill.
In the 1990s photography also became accepted in art on an institutional level.
Many different cameras and camera models came out in the 1990′s, the 90′s was said to be the films technical golden age.
Subcultures such as punk and soul had increased in popularity in the 90s era meaning there seemed to me a lot more concert photography including stage diving shots and more interesting concert shots.
Also fashion in the 90’s reflected a lot on the economic, political and social unrest. The 90’s fashion photography was very different to the 80’s as in that period sex was glamourised meaning that fashion revolved around that.
In the 90’s there was a return in documentary photography especially women’s photojournalism as it was a big thing then.

youtube

🔹You know that annoying “passht” camera shutter sound your phone makes whenever you take a picture? Well, in Japan🇯🇵, you can’t mute it, not even if you switch to mute mode! Here’s why.👉🏻 Back in early 2000, when Kyocera VP-210 was launched, Japan became the first country to sell camera equipped phones. These phones also had the ability to send photos via email (pretty astonishing for 2000, isn’t it?). When users started to get used to them and learned how to attach pictures to an email, a big problem started to emerge: as any citizen of a civilized society would do, people started using their camera to take up-skirt photos of women, especially in crowded places like trains! By 2001, this was already a matter of online discussion and, because no legal provision has been taken by the government, wireless carriers took it upon themselves. In order to prevent secret filming and ensure privacy, carriers made it a requirement that all phones sold in Japan must be customized for the market so that all built-in cameras cannot be muted. 🔹 #actorslife #actors #actress #acting #losangeles #me #newyork #usa #instalife #work #beauty #inspiration #women #woman #girls #fashion #style #camera #japan #facts

Scientific Advancements
Epinephrine
Japanese chemist Jōkichi Takamine and his assistant Keizo Uenaka first discovered epinephrine in 1900. In 1901 Takamine successfully isolated and purified the hormone from the adrenal glands of sheep and oxen.
General anesthesia
Hanaoka Seishū was the first surgeon in the world who used the general anaesthesia in surgery, in 1804, and who dared to operate on cancers of the breast and oropharynx, to remove necrotic bone, and to perform amputations of the extremities in Japan.
Methamphetamine
Methamphetamine was first synthesized from ephedrine in Japan in 1894 by chemist Nagayoshi Nagai. In 1919, methamphetamine hydrochloride was synthesized by pharmacologist Akira Ogata.
Meson
Hideki Yukawa predicted the existence and the approximate mass of the "meson" as the carrier of the nuclear force that holds atomic nuclei together in 1934.
Camera phone
The world's first camera phone (it also had a real-time-video-call functionality. It could send an email with a picture), the VP-210, was developed by Kyocera in 1999.
Karaoke
There are various disputes about who first invented the name karaoke (a Japanese word meaning "empty orchestra"). One claim is that the karaoke styled machine was invented by Japanese musician Daisuke Inoue in Kobe, Japan, in 1971.
Lithium-ion battery
Akira Yoshino invented the modern li-ion battery in 1985. In 1991, Sony and Asahi Kasei released the first commercial lithium-ion battery using Yoshino's design.
16-bit microprocessor
The first single-chip 16-bit microprocessors were the NEC μCOM-16 (1974) and the Panafacom MN1610 (1975).
Microprocessor
The concept of a single-chip microprocessor central processing unit (CPU) was conceived in a 1968 meeting in Japan between Sharp engineer Tadashi Sasakiand a software engineering researcher from Nara Women's College. Sasaki discussed the microprocessor concept with Busicom and Intel in 1968. The first commercial microprocessor, the 4-bit Intel 4004, began with the "Busicom Project" in 1968 as Masatoshi Shima's three-chip CPU design, which was simplified down to a single-chip microprocessor, designed from 1969 to 1970 by Intel's Marcian Hoff and Federico Faggin and Busicom's Masatoshi Shima, and commercially released in 1971.
Android
The world's first android, DER 01, was developed by a Japanese research group, The Intelligent Robotics Lab, directed by Hiroshi Ishiguro at Osaka University, and Kokoro Co., Ltd. The Actroid is a humanoid robot with strong visual human-likeness developed by Osaka University and manufactured by Kokoro Company Ltd. (the animatronics division of Sanrio). It was first unveiled at the 2003 International Robot Exposition in Tokyo, Japan. The Actroid woman is a pioneer example of a real machine similar to imagined machines called by the science fiction terms android or gynoid, so far used only for fictional robots. It can mimic such lifelike functions as blinking, speaking, and breathing. The "Repliee" models are interactive robots with the ability to recognise and process speech and respond in kind.
