So this is one box checked off my list. I've been struggling to actually get around to anything adt wise since the holiday is keeping me busy. But as of today I'm going to start posting on things (after I sleep because my eyes demand it). This was definitely the first thing that I wanted to finish before I moved onto the rest because damn, it's such an important piece to me.

I really enjoyed working on this and I did struggle with the shading on the dress, which is why it didn't come out sooner. But now that it's done, it was definitely worth it.

I will say I also challenged myself to do a more shadow -heavy shading to bring in the feel even though some of the light is restored, it's still Sinister's world and it is dark. I've never done a light source from the background, so this was all new shadow angles for me. I don't think I got them completely right, but I'm satisfied with it and wouldn't change it unless @strangelockd asked me to.

Hello my friend, Terribly sorry for the late reply but I'm just now starting to unwind from the holidays and everything. I am well, despite the issues that came with the winter storm and loss of power in my area. The holidays were good to myself and my partner, who has flown out to see his mother for her birthday later this month. This house is lonely without his warmth, but I will manage.

I will be resuming posts on all stories tomorrow and browsing everyone's pages to see what I have missed in my absence. August 1st, 1767:  The Founding of Carthage, NH

Originally known as Hilton’s Town, the settlement started along the shorelines as fishing was plentiful.  As settlers came into the area farmsteads and orchards formed and the town was granted a charter as Carthage.  Some families currently residing in Carthage can trace their roots to the founding although some may be twisting the truth a little here and there.  

November 8th, 1854:  Colburn and Walmsley feud

The family feud between the Colburns and the Walmsleys comes to a head when Vincent Walmsley is accused of Gertrude Colburn’s murder.  Nothing is ever proven against Vincent but, years later on the anniversary of Gertrude’s death, his body is discovered tangled in the hedge fence dividing the families’ land.  The bodies of both Gertrude and Vincent are buried in the Old South Cemetery with Gertrude’s gravestone naming Vincent as her murderer, a final dig at the Walmsley family.

March 2nd, 1893: Cecil Lawrence Spiritualism Encampment

Noted psychic in the Spiritualism movement, Cecil Lawrence founds an enclave of Spiritualism on the outskirts of his hometown of Carthage.  The group is met with mixed feelings throughout Carthage.  In the years to come, as Spiritualism fades, the group disbands and is regarded as yet another example of the charlatans of the time.  Threads of the families involved reside in Carthage in present day, however, and may still dip their hands in the spiritual realm. The location of the enclave is eventually reutilized as one of the large orchards to the north of town.  Cecil Lawrence’s cabin still stands.  

June 23rd, 1923:  The Brummet Fire

There was a horrific fire at the Brummet estate during a dinner party. The Brummet family, a wealthy and old family of Carthage, nearly all perished as well as the majority of their guests.  Out of the twenty-five in attendance, five survived that night including the niece to the family’s matriarch as well as the purported paramour of said matriarch.   The house was left in ruins that stand to this day.

May 2nd, 1985:  The discovery of Tabitha Wainwright, Erica Fitzsimmons, and Stephen Miller

The bodies of three Hanbury College students were discovered near Revelations Falls, a location popular with local legend hounds as a place the Devil was supposedly seen throughout the early days of Carthage and beyond.  Rumors swirled about the case and the cause of their deaths, many sighting organizations within the college both real and possibly imagined.  The deaths are ruled to be the result of hazing gone wrong and the victims are said to have all died from exposure.  Whether or not this is believed, however, is a matter of opinion.  The happening brought about many fears that seemed to sweep the nation at the time with ‘outlandish’ accusations being flung throughout the town.

October 21st, 1998:  The disappearance of Bryn Hepburn

Bryn Hepburn, 15, went missing from his house while home alone with his brothers.  Despite best efforts, no evidence of his whereabouts was ever discovered and the case goes cold.  The community remains divided on what happened, many harkening back to 1985 and the fears that case brought about.

December 15th, 2022:  The Fletcher Burglary

During the evening of the lighting of the town’s Christmas tree, there was a break-in at the Fletcher family’s home, wealthy residents of The Ridge.  At this time there are no leads and no reason beyond the family’s wealth that they were likely targets.  Another question remains, was this simply a one-time happening, or are there more break-ins to come?

3. Can you tell us about your 5 most nostalgic muses?

1. Brooke Maddox is hands down number one. I've been roleplaying her since late 2016 and even though she's a canon character, she's basically an OC too at this point considering the amount of headcanons, meta and deep diving I went into her backstory to flesh her out. She is and always will be my baby and my longest running muse to date.

2. Isabelle Samson. Her story is dark but there's a lot more to her than meets the eye. She may be one of my most controversial characters. I've probably played her for 5 years now on and off? I've had people steal her and try to recreate her themselves, she's been on the receiving end of jealousy/hatred. And despite the roller coaster ride it's been developing her, I wouldn't give her up for the world. She may even make it into a script or future novel one day so ...

3. Madison Maddox is Brooke's future daughter and next gen. She's my bisexual queen. To this day, her threesome with her best friend and her bff's boyfriend lives rent free in my head. It was a wild time. She's grown so much and she still has ways to go. She's definitely flawed but I also think that's what makes her so realistic?

4. and 5. Sienna Fox and Cassie Howard are also nostalgic characters and have earned a spot on the list. I haven't played them as long but they're two others I've spent a lot of time developing on my own.

19. What do you miss about old roleplay? (Roleplay before 2017?)

I love this question because... EVERYTHING. Early roleplaying days were so much more chill and laidback. People only care about aesthetics and being liked that they put 95% of their focus on themes and graphics and less than 5% on actual writing. I hate prose with a passion lol. To me... it’s not really writing but a confusing collection of words no one actually uses in real life and people only looked up on thesaurus and threw in. I miss groups before they became way too toxic and policing. I miss chatting with friends over IM (yes), skype, etc and writing back and forth until like 7am sometimes. I feel like a grandma sometimes who reminisces on the good ol’ rp days that sadly just don’t exist anymore =////

Happy birthday, @strangelockd! It's not the final product but with the exhaustion I'm feeling from yesterday, I did the best that I could to make it as close to done as I could. Plus, I'm at work and on a time crunch. I will have the final product to you by morning, however, I promise, my dear. I knew from the moment I read your story with Eldritch that I wanted to draw this for you at some point. What better reason than your birthday? :) I had a wonderful thought that because of Erica's devotion to Sinister, he's able to tame the Darkhold and revive his cloak so I drew a variant of basically the Insect Cloak for him. I played to the idea that their clothes are color faded but not time worn because there's so little light in Sinister's world. I had a lot of fun drawing this pose, inspired by the music you sent me that you use to write about him as well as my own mixed in. I hope that you like it, moonflower.

Feeling his body relax she breathed in his scent of smoke and tobacco as released a sigh of bliss. But she couldn’t help but feel like he wasn’t telling her something. Her instincts screamed at her…a warning of a woman, perhaps a past love. The gift of sight had always weight heavy on her. This was delightful. I had to suspend disbelief a little at the idea that you could spend so much time with someone while masked and they'd have no idea who you were unmasked. But it did make for a lovely story so I forgave it. I love how Camellia and Lord Wainwright are both playing roles for society. She's a mouse and a wallflower, he's 'the lord of pleasure,' while neither is really that. Really, one wonders how Lord Wainwright's reputation got so out of hand. But in secret, they're much more alike than it would seem. They make a wonderful couple, giving one another strength and courage to be on the outside who they are on the inside. Camellia and her sisters were determined and outspoken and a joy to watch interact. I hope we get more of them in future novels in this series. There were just the right amount of obstacles and drama to make it a delicious read and make the happy ending that much more enjoyable. The audiobook narrator did an excellent job and a very pleasant listening experience. I'll be continuing the rest of this series in audio and then seeking out more of her narrations. *Thanks to Erica Ridley for providing a copy for review. (I did end up purchasing the audiobook.)

Review Summary: I’m not going to be friends with anyone who won’t watch this movie.

The Reluctant Fundamentalist, based on the book of the same name by Mohsin Hamid shares the story of a Pakistani man living in America post-9/11. It opens with the kidnapping of an American professor, Anse Rainer, in Lahore, Pakistan. American journalist/CIA informant, Bobby Lincoln (Liev Schreiber), interviews Rainer’s colleague, Changez Khan (Riz Ahmed), who the CIA suspects is involved in the kidnapping.

Changez is a very intelligent and determined young man who moves to the United States to attend Princeton University on scholarship, and eventually, to New York City to work for a Wall Street valuation company, Underwood Samson. He works on a fairly diverse team and thrives very easily at the company, rising quickly to the level of Associate.

Changez also falls very deeply in love with a white American photographer, Erica (Kate Hudson) who he meets by chance one day by stumbling into her outdoor photoshoot of skateboarders.

After the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center by Al-Qaeda, Changez experiences many different forms of racism and Islamophobia. Immediately after the attacks, Changez and his co-workers are arriving back to New York from Manila, Philippines. There, he is subjected to a humiliating strip search by authorities which ends with the man inspecting his anus. The film portrays this in a way in which makes you focus entirely on how Changez feels humiliated and degraded.

The entire film does just such an amazing job of focusing on how deeply traumatic these experiences of racism and Islamophobia are for Muslims living in America. In addition to being strip-searched at the airport, Changez is also mistakenly arrested on the street after calls were made to the police about a different Pakistani man. He is interrogated intensely and not allowed to contact his lawyer. In another instance, his tires are slashed after a meeting and a white man pulls up next to him in the parking lot (assumingly the same man who slashed his tires), spits at him, and says “Fuck you, Osama!”

One scene that is particularly unnerving is when his girlfriend, Erica sets up an art show that is based on their relationship. It features several fetishistic elements and appropriates many aspects of Islamic culture. Changez is outraged when he sees it, feeling as if he was just a prop in her artistic endeavors. Riz Ahmed’s acting here is really amazing here too! (He is never one to shy away from political comments and recently released a song called “Englistan” about his experience as a British Pakistani man which you should listen to!) You can really feel Riz’s true emotion behind it. Here is the full reaction scene:

Full transcript Changez: You’re the one goddamn person I trusted in this city and now I get this shit. I get this fucking shit from you too, now? Hmm? Erica: I don’t...I thought...I thought...I thought you’d be proud of me. Changez: Why would I be proud? What? Proud of being your own little pet artistic project? Erica: Can we please take this outside? Changez: No, what? Was that the idea? Huh? How chic! How chic! “I’m gonna date a Pakistani after 9/11 and it’s gonna be great for my bohemian street cred!” Erica: That is completely unfair! Changez: “I fucked the 20th hijacker!” Huh? I’m like the ultimate downtown status symbol right now.

Another thing that The Reluctant Fundamentalist does that is interesting is display everyday microaggressions or ingrained Islamophobic ideals that we as Americans exhibit towards the Muslim community. Changez consistently has his name pronounced incorrectly and by people that he works with. These are people that he spends the majority of his day with and they can’t even learn how to pronounce his name - a name that is really not at all hard to pronounce even for the most redneck American. He gets called “Changes” or “Chain-jeez” multiple times.

By one coworker, he is even called Saddam on more than one occasion. Multiple coworkers comment on the fact that they dislike his beard and urge him to shave it, despite the fact that Changez says that it reminds him of where he comes from. These are things that Americans, particularly white Americans, do, sometimes without even realizing it. But still, The Reluctant Fundamentalist shows us that these things impact Muslims living in America negatively.

Furthermore, often while at work, after the attacks, Changez overhears his coworkers speaking ignorantly about Muslims. Here is how one conversation went down:

Wainwright: All I'm saying is, before I'd start a full F-16, tank-ass war against the entire Muslim world, I'd give the CIA, INTERPOL, whoever, a chance to track these motherfuckers down. Mike: We got hit first. It's Pearl Harbor all over again. It's common fucking sense. Wainwright: I'm not saying you're wrong, but what nation-state attacked us? Mike: Nation-state, my ass! You're splitting hairs. Wainright: Am I? Mike: Yeah. They believe God told them to blow us up. It's in their book. Wainright: It's in their book? Mike: Yeah. Whatever it's called.

The film does an incredible job of articulating how American patriotism can easily cross the line into xenophobia. I think that a major point to take away from this is that white fear and American nationalism breeds terrorism (though Changez is not a terrorist, that’s not what I’m implying). But, we as Americans ostracize Muslims to the point where we make them resent us. We tell them that America is the place where dreams come true and anyone can thrive, but then despise anyone who we don’t think fits our very Eurocentric standards. And when tragedy strikes or anything happens that makes us feel threatened, we blame anyone who looks like the people we are angry at. I think that Changez says it best himself:

Changez: You picked a side after 9/11: I didn’t have to. It was picked for me.

So, are there any negatives to the film? Only slightly. I found the present day plot with Anse Rainer a bit confusing to follow. I just think that it could have been simplified a bit for the film. And as for women in the film, of course, I wish there were more women because I literally always wish that there were more women. However, I was pleased with the way the women were represented. His sister Bina (Meesha Shafi) is a carefree and confident woman who dresses in her own unique style. It’s a contrast to the typical Muslim women that are typically displayed in Western media. We need more honest and real portrayals of Muslim women in popular media, which is why we really need more incredible filmmakers who are women of color like Mira Nair (Mississippi Masala, The Namesake).

I give this film a 4.5 out of 5 because I really think that the plot taking place in the present day was very confusing and hard to follow. That being said, this is truly one of the most incredible films I have seen recently. I’ve been so serious this whole review because I just couldn’t bring myself to try and be funny. This topic isn't funny. It demands to be taken seriously. I wish every single American, especially white American, could watch The Reluctant Fundamentalist. Maybe then we could understand our impact of the hatred and trauma that we inflict on Muslims living America every day.
