the lengths that ethan blair miller went to in order to mimic eric harris and dylan klebold, especially as he was someone who eventually decided on not committing a school shooting, definitely fascinate me.
during his attack on a safeway in bend, oregon, he wore a shirt that said ‘HURT’ across the chest, which is most visible in the photo above. miller also displays many behaviors that other columbine copycats exhibit, such as dressing in a way similar to harris and klebold (black pants, black boots, t-shirt with word art). though, this specific outfit—with the red text against a black shirt—is much more reminiscent of klebold’s ‘WRATH’ shirt that he wore during the attack on columbine.
miller seemed to have more of an interest in klebold than he did in harris, in general. miller’s wattpad username was wrathofman22, most likely referencing the shirt that klebold sported on the day he attacked columbine. and it’s not like miller’s admiration of the columbine shooters was any secret, either; he cited them as a main source of inspiration for his attack. he had even originally planned to shoot up his past high school, in order to pay homage to columbine.
i’m assuming the reason many people don’t discuss ethan blair miller are because he kind of got lost in the mix of copycat crimes committed by columbine fanboys, and the body count of miller’s attack wasn’t more than five. either way, his case is very interesting (the fact that he published his manifesto on wattpad is definitely… something?) and i wish primary sources about it were more accessible!

I'm so sorry to have kept you all waiting on the requests, however I hope that now you see what I've been working on, you might understand why it took some time!! Especially when I've been working on this only in the evening, and while trying to keep my tiny human alive!
When I started this, it was originally a combination of requests/characters I really like! and somehow I ended up with 62 of them!! I'm hoping maybe in the future Ill revisit this, maybe try get 100?! But for now I'm glad to be able to take a break and start on other projects!!
This was really a labor of love, and I really hope you all like it as well! I did try my hardest to get as many details as I could, but I did take a few uniform liberty's here and there!! I hid a few little movie and game Easter eggs in there as well, let me know if you spot any!

“Joel Miller”.
Was that a suicide mission? Probably, but you hoped not.
It wasn’t like you had a choice anyway. The moment you heard Joel’s name being called for this rescue mission, you knew you were going to volunteer to go with the party. Yes, he was going to get angry and try to talk you out of it, but it would be in vain. You would follow him to the end of the world if necessary.
You stood there by his side, the canteen rammed with people ― all of you looking towards the platform in the north corner. One of the leaders, Troy, kept on shouting names to the void. You glanced up at Joel, who was completely still, his eyes fixed on the podium. You couldn’t tell if he was upset or not, but he would soon be for sure.
Once Troy finished talking, an uncomfortable silence ensued, only broken by the quiet sobs of a young fellow whose named had been picked. Eric, you remembered. He must have just turned eighteen, because he looked so damn young. His mother was by his side, hugging him with tears on her eyes.
That scene broke your heart a little.
“Any volunteers?”, said the leader after a minute.
You looked around. No one was talking, everyone pretending they didn’t hear the question.
You felt Joel’s hand firmly grip your left wrist, silently asking you to remain quiet. He knew what you were about to do, but he couldn’t stop you.
You raised your right hand, eyes to the front, avoiding visual contact with him.
“I’ll take Eric’s place”, you said with a steady voice.
Joel grunted audibly, his fingers tighter around your wrist.
“The fuck do you think you’re doing?”, you heard him mumble under his breath.
You ignored him.
“Great, thank you. Y’all are dismissed, except for those elected. Come forward”.
Before Joel had the chance to even talk, Eric and his mother approached you. She hugged you, still sobbing, and you palmed her back in a calming manner. The young bloke stared at you, silently crying and mouthed a “thank you”.
“I’m eternally grateful. Eric is the only person I have left by my side. My husband, my daughter… everyone is gone”, whispered the woman in your ear.
You held the tears by gulping down the knot in your throat. Although you didn’t necessarily volunteer for his son originally, her emotion was so sincere it tugged at your heart.
The woman broke off the hug, touched your forearm in gratitude, and then walked off with her son.
You turned around to face Joel. His jaw was so clenched you worried he was going to chip a molar.
Joel wanted to shake some sense into you so badly, he had to tightly close his fists. He couldn’t comprehend why you would do that. He wanted to keep you safe, and you were not making it an easy task. What if he lost you? What would he do then? That simple thought made him feel sick. You were the glue holding him together, the only reason he woke up every day and didn’t give up.
The mere thought of losing you consumed his brain, whether he liked it or not. He… he loved you, all of you, but was too afraid to speak his mind, to jinx it. Because he was cursed. Saying it out loud would put you in the universe’s bullseye, he was sure of it.
When the woman and his son left along with almost everyone else, Joel pulled you from your elbow, slamming you against his chest. He really was trying not to lose his shit in public, but fear was gripping him by his neck, the grim reaper’s noose strangling him.
“You ain’t coming. I don’t fucking care if that kid dies, you’re staying right here. Tell Troy you have changed your mind now”, he muttered, teeth gritting, his fingers sinking around your flesh.
“You’re hurting me, Joel”, you whispered, and he relaxed his hand’s grip, although he didn’t let go. “Look, I know it’s scary, but if you’re going, I’m coming with you. You won’t get rid of me so easily”, you taunted him.
The joke wasn’t welcomed, which you expected.
“If you get hurt, even a tiny scratch ― I’m gonna fucking kill you myself”, his head was bowed towards yours, his mouth too close, your palms on his chest.
So close you couldn’t refrain yourself from placing a gentle kiss on his lips. That soothed him, but just a bit. You glanced at him, containing your amusement.
“Well, that’s a paradox, don’t you think?”, you spoke softly before taking a step back, holding his hand. “C’mon, they are waiting”.
“We’re not done talking about this”, he grunted.
You dragged Joel to the circle where the other six lucky people were standing around Troy, in time to listen to whatever he had to say about this mission.
“As I was explaining at the beginning of this meeting, our most experienced medic, Sasha, and her team, have not returned from their scavenging run. They went out a couple of days ago looking for medical supplies and we have not heard back from them in the last twenty-four hours. We must bring them back. That is, if they are still alive”, Troy explained while he flattened a map of the city on the table in front of him. “Their last contact was from Illinois Medical District, somewhere around Ogden Avenue. We assume they went in John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County”. Troy laid out the plan to follow, before finishing with a, “You’re leaving in three hours, good luck”.
“Have you lost your fucking mind?”, Joel growled as soon as the door closed behind him.
Even if he wanted to, he couldn’t stop himself from worrying. The memory of almost losing you still haunted him. The overthinking, the fear, the irrevocable doom ― it all made him feel uneasy. He just wanted to keep you away from all harm. That fateful night Joel swore to himself he would never let anything happen to you ― not while he was still breathing.
He had lost too much, but also gained so much ― he could not, would not, lose you too. Even if it was the last thing he did in this world. Over the last year, he had grown attached to you. You taught him there was light on the shore ― that life didn’t have to end the moment he lost Sarah, as much as he wanted it to. You showed him he could still care, laugh, protect, cry, worry, relax, feel. Feel so much, so vividly.
Joel could have said all that to you instead of his scolding question, but he didn’t know any better. His feelings were an entangled mess, one he didn’t have the experience to unravel.
His anger shimmered when you rolled your eyes at him.
“Honestly, I don’t know what you worry about, Joel. It will be fine. We’ve been through worse than this puny, little rescue mission. We’ll be okay”, you downplayed with a sweet smile, your hand stroking his forearm.
“What if we aren’t? What if you get hurt?”, he muttered, his jaw muscles rigid.
Your features softened; your sweet lips pursed.
“I can’t, you’ll kill me yourself, don’t you remember?”, he deciphered your joking tone, but to him this was no laughing matter. “Your paradox?”, you added cocking an eyebrow, mistaking his silence for forgetfulness.
“I know what I said. And I meant it. You can’t get hurt, got it? I forbid you”, his voice was serious. He knew you couldn’t make such a promise, but he insisted anyway, “Promise me”.
Something in you shifted because Joel saw your expression change from amusement to understanding. You got closer, sliding your arms around his waist. Joel draped his around your shoulders, his heart beating loudly in his ribcage. He held you tight, your nose poking his chest, your palms resting on the small of his back.
He shut his eyes, counting his blessings.
“I promise”, you conceded in a hushed tone.
His reply was simple ― he pressed his lips against your forehead as his body relaxed into yours.
At midnight, both you and Joel walked towards the 1999 Jeep Cherokee you had parked on South Damen Avenue. You had just done a reconnaissance mission around the hospital’s west wing. You had been in there for two full hours and didn’t find a living soul, just clickers. You were sweaty because of the physical effort, your gun still hot. You cleaned the blade of your knife on your jeans before sheathing it in your belt. You trotted to the passenger’s side while Joel headed towards the driver’s, both of you jumping in the car.
Two members of the team, Jordan and Margaret, had just taken over you after you reported back to them what you encountered inside. You saw them walking towards Winchester Avenue to sweep the north wing of the building. Daisy and Adam just returned too and headed towards the second car in West Polk Street ― they had explored the south wing at the same time as you had been inside. Luke and Taylor had just taken over them to inspect the east wing of the hospital.
“That was… interesting”, you said while closing the passenger’s door. “If they really went in there, there was absolutely no trace of them. It’s like they have vanished”.
“Yeah, it’s weird. Not even one clicker was dead before we entered. If they had encountered any issues, surely they would have killed some of them. We should have seen bodies or something, I dunno”, Joel thought out loud, leaving his firearm on top of the dash at the same time you did.
“Let’s see if Jordan and Margaret, or Luke and Taylor get back with news, otherwise this is going to be boring as fuck”, you commented as Joel leaned towards you to open the glove box. “What are you doing?”, you asked him out of curiosity.
“Looking for entertainment”, he then pulled a pack of cigarettes with a smile on his face. “You smoke?”, he asked while breaking the plastic seal around it.
You shook your head. It wasn’t a habit you wanted to pick up now, although you didn’t mind others smoking. Joel rolled down his window while pressing the car’s cigarette lighter against the tip of the fag. He then put the lighter back in its slot and laid his right hand on your left thigh ― his fingertips stroking your inner thigh. So possessive, your temperature started to rise, a slick warmth pooling in your lower belly.
You glanced at him with a raised eyebrow, but he didn’t notice ― Joel was looking through the driver’s window, his elbow poking out and resting on the door frame while he took a puff. You hovered your fingers over his on your thigh, your palm against the back of his hand, your digits intertwined in a fist as you slid them closer to your crotch.
“I could entertain you, if you wanted me to”, you whispered when his knuckles nudged your cunt.
Joel turned to look at you so fast you thought he might snap his neck. His eyes drifted down and darkened. He poked your pussy with his knuckles again, this time of his own volition.
“We shouldn’t”, a muscle twitched in his jawline.
You smiled.
“I’m sure Adam and Daisy can keep watch on their own for a while”, you bit your bottom lip as you flattened his hand against your belly and guided him down, underneath your jeans and panties. His palm flushed against your mound. “Please?”, you added, flashing your eyelashes at him.
Joel dunked his middle finger in your wet slit and stroked your clit. You pressed your lips, gazing at him like a needy puppy. He didn’t break visual contact as his index joined the middle finger, both digits tracing your damp furrow. You sobbed quietly as Joel took another drag, submerging his long finger until it disappeared in your weeping hole. He moved it in a circular motion, and you gasped.
“Is this what you need, sweetheart?”, he murmured. You nodded frantically. “Always so needy for some cock, aren’t you?”.
“Not just any cock, yours”, you emphasized with a stuttering voice, your insides melting for him.
His eyes flickered with lust, a sinful grin taking over his lips.
You whimpered, tilting your head backwards to rest against the headrest, as his index joined the middle one in your warm pit. You started panting when he caressed your g-spot non-stop while he finished his cigarette nonchalantly. Joel stubbed it out when he was done with it and then pushed his fingers in your cunt as far as he could take them, bottoming out, to the point where the force he was using made you lift your hips off the car seat.
You were so close to coming ― your sleek pussy beating for him, clasping around him. You were so soaked, his digits were drowning inside of you, making squelching noises as Joel fingered you relentlessly. You held on to his torturing wrist, feeling the rhythm he was imposing on you. Your drenched pussy palpitated, your clit on fire ― and so you came with a loud, prolonged moan, your knees shaking.
Joel rubbed your clit one more time before removing his hand from your underwear.
“C’mon, be a good girl now and do your job”, he ordered, cupping his swollen groin.
“Yes, sir”, you murmured, your cunt still gushing, deluging your panties.
He took your right hand and placed it on his bulge, rubbing your palm against the zipper of his jeans. You grasped the metal rod of his headrest while you leaned forward and ghosted his mouth, your playful hand kneading his erection. Your lips crashed and the kiss got sloppy ― his tongue wrestled with yours, while you unbuckled his belt and undid the zipper.
The palm of your hand slid off his length over his briefs. Then you pushed down the elastic of his underwear and his cock popped out. You ignored his shaft to massage his ballocks. You squeezed them gently and Joel let out a horny moan in the middle of the messy kiss. The most perfect melody you ever heard.
You broke off the smooch to catch a breath, your hand still holding his balls, your thumb rubbing the ridge in between his nuts. You pecked his Adam’s apple as you wrapped your fingers around his shaft, moving your hand up and down slowly. Joel sat up a bit to remove his shirt and then rested his back against the car seat again. You kissed the centre of his collarbone, your lips drifting southwards on his skin.
You bit around his belly button when you heard him lit another cigarette, the smoke filling up the cabin. You finally went down on him and showered his cock with wet licks. Joel sighed audibly, relaxing on his seat, which made you smile. Your tongue twirled around the tip of his dick once before you backed off and spit on his erection. You slathered your saliva on his steely column, then bente forward with your mouth open to imprison his glans with your plush lips.
A controlled groan escaped Joel’s mouth ― squirming in place, trying to make himself comfortable when you took his dick in your mouth. He looked down, your head bobbing up and down on his lap, your lips pressed around his cock, creating a seal. He felt himself trapped in your throat, his tip touching the back of your wet cavity. His left hand put the cigarette on his lips and took a long puff as he placed his right hand on your neck. You were wearing a ponytail ― in a moment of weakness he grabbed it resolutely, forcing you down on him.
Your eyes watered, your gag reflex being tested, your chin caressing his testicles. You retched a bit, your throat adapting to his massive girth and length. He had gotten rough for a second, which meant you were pushing him to his limits. When Joel realised that you were struggling a bit, he quickly let go of your ponytail.
“Shit, sorry, darlin’”, he growled.
You freed his cock to breathe and giggled, your mouth full of sticky precum. You started pumping him, kissing the velvety skin on his balls, while his right hand travelled down your back until he seized the back of your underwear and yanked it. The rims of your panties slid over your skin and got stuck in your slit and butt crack, as if you were wearing a g-string. The clothing caught on your clit and you gasped as he pulled upwards, the garment scrunching in your fold, causing a delightful friction against the centre of your pleasure.
Joel stirred his hips, which told you he was close to coming. You sat back up, your teary eyes meeting his lustful ones. He wiped away a tear off your cheek.
“Come sit on my lap, baby, let me fuck that pussy of mine”, he offered, tapping his left thigh, and putting out the cigarette butt on the car’s ashtray.
Before you happily obliged, you pushed down your jeans and panties to your ankles and kicked your feet until they came off. Your t-shirt quickly followed, no bra. Then you hastily straddled him as commanded. Joel set down his hands on your ass and abruptly spanked one of your buttocks. You jerked your hips up at the surprise ― your cunt above his belly button.
Holding you there, he lapped your right nipple with the tip of his tongue. The tight button shrunk in excitement as you whimpered. Then his lips closed around the puckered teat and sucked it in in his mouth. This time you whined, the sound reverberating in your throat as you slammed your eyes shut. Your wanton pussy was dripping on to his belly while he alternated between your boobs to eat them like a glutton ― the discharge of your passion running down from your leaking hole on to his belly button, then pooling on the tip of his manhood, sliding off his happy trail and length to finally gather on his balls.
His tongue gave you no truce ― licking, sucking, taunting, smothering your nipples. You dug your fingers in his hair, pressing his gorgeous face against your breasts. Joel palmed your shivering pussy from behind, his fingertips caressing your clit, which he started tapping sweetly. Your head leaned forward in awe, eyes closed, to kiss his crown. His fingers became more intrusive, his mouth more demanding, until you couldn’t deal with it anymore. You wailed his name as you came, your knees quivering. Then he slapped you hard on your pussy ― one of your hands flew to your lips to stifle your own scream. Joel immediately massaged your puffed-up flaps, his cold skin a calming balm on yours.
“Good girl, sweetheart. Now fuck yourself with my dick”, he instructed you before trapping your nipple in between in his teeth and pulling.
You saw stars behind your eyes.
You let go of his hair, curved your back and cradled his face with both hands, tilting it up towards you so you could kiss him fondly as you dropped your hips. His cock found your pulsating opening ― it was like his body knew its way to yours blindly. Your palms flat against his cheeks, your breath and his collided like a tornado when you both moaned in each other’s mouths. You plummeted on his lap, burying him completely inside of you. Your hips rolled of their own accord. Slowly you rode him, up and down, back and forth, your lips attached to his at all times. The tip of his cock kept stroking the right spot over and over again ― every single time it would drag along your anterior wall, driving you crazy.
You felt like riding a rollercoaster ― your orgasm building up as you approached the top and then you tipped over with no warning. Your lips parted as wave after wave washed over you in bursts. Your cunt narrowed down, choking his dick, palpitating, involuntarily pleading for him to come with you.
“Fuck, fuck ― FUCK”, he groaned painfully, lifting your ass off his cock rashly.
Just in the nick of time, he came ― his cock twitching against your belly button, you wielding him, gently pumping his shaft as the last shots of cum spurted out the slit on his glans. You squeezed his erection one last time, kissing him lovingly on the chin.
Labouredly breathing, both of your hearts slowed down together as you recovered. His gaze darkened ― you could see the longing, the yearning in his eyes. The care, the affection, but also the fear. Your heart swelled at the realisation ― he hadn’t said it yet, but you knew, even though you thought he hadn’t realised it himself. You just needed to be patient with him. You had time.
With a doting smile, your thumb hovered over his lips before you pressed them with yours.
An hour had gone by, and there was no news from Jordan nor Margaret. You had radioed the second car ― they hadn’t heard back from Luke and Taylor either. The pack of cigarettes was only half full now, Joel chain smoking, both of you watching the building attentively. You tried to contact Jordan over the radio, but there was no reply.
You clicked your tongue, handing Joel the radio and grabbing the gun off the dash.
Joel’s eyes darted to you.
“Where do you think you are going?”, his brows furrowed.
“I’m just gonna have a quick look around the corner, that’s all”, you said, opening the passenger’s door.
“Then I’m coming with you”, he grunted.
Joel grabbed his firearm and left the radio on the dash. Both doors shut silently, the night was so eerily calm you could hear a pin drop.
The chilling early December air greeted you as you stepped out. You started walking towards Winchester Avenue, where Jordan and Margaret had disappeared from sight. Joel was a few metres behind you, covering your back.
Then you heard it before you saw it. You signalled for Joel to stop in his tracks. A quiet sob, a thud. With your back against the wall, you sticked out your head to sweep the entrance to the emergency room. Sasha was on the floor, all bloody, Margaret crouching over her. You couldn’t hear their whispers. As Margaret helped Sasha to her feet, the medic whimpered and hobbled, her knees touching the pavement again.
“Shit”, you cursed, running towards them, Joel on your heels. “What’s happened?”, you questioned, putting your gun away, grabbing Sasha’s left arm to drape it over your shoulders.
Sasha just wept, shaking uncontrollably, so you looked at Margaret for answers.
“Where’s Jordan?”, you asked before she shook her head with pouty lips and mournful eyes.
Fuck, you thought, the weight of a massive stone grounding your stomach.
As Sasha stood with you, Joel clutched his fingers around your left elbow, yanking you away from both women. You lost your grip on Sasha as you stumbled with your own feet, Joel’s hand steadying you to prevent you from falling.
You wanted to shout at him, but you refrained. He had drawn his gun and was pointing it to Sasha’s forehead.
“You’ve been bit”, he sentenced, unruffled, his hand still.
You looked down and then you saw teeth’s marks on Sasha’s forearm. Your eyes jumped to hers, a mixture of fear and sympathy.
Margaret sobbed, her hand flew to Joel’s wrist, trying to push down the gun.
“Joel, please, she’s my best friend, we can’t just―”, before she was able to finish, a commotion caught your attention.
Both you and Joel looked up at the same time, a clicker dragging its feet towards you. In its past life, it had been a teen girl, brunette, curly hair. Had it not been for the fungus growing around her mouth, her decomposed expression and awkward walking, you knew she would have been beautiful.
Then it lunged forward towards you, but Joel was quick enough to shoot it right between its eyes. You gasped, clutching onto him. You had a glimpse at his face ― he seemed to have seen a ghost, but the moment was fleeting, his demeanour composed again.
He turned his gun to Sasha once more. You really thought he was going to execute her there and then.
More clicking sounds, dragged by the wind. You could see movement through the glass doors.
“Are you coming or not? She’s staying though”, Joel repeated, his tone soulless.
There was no time to respond, as a small group of clickers tumbled through the emergency doors, throwing them open and running fast towards all of you, as if they had awakened from their lethargy.
Joel reacted before you did ― he snatched you and pushed you in front of him, urging you to run.
“Run! Run!”, he screamed at you, your legs taking you away as fast as they could, Joel racing behind you towards the car.
You heard the loud shrieks as both women were torn apart. You blinked to keep the tears at bay, and you didn’t look back.
Joel skidded through the mud, his hand grasping the handle on the driver’s side as you jumped inside. He swiftly put the keys in the ignition at the same time the radio went off.
“Abort! Drive! GO! THEY ARE HE―”, you both looked towards West Polk Street, the headlights of the other car blinded you as they turned the corner towards South Damen Avenue.
Three clickers were on the roof of the car, two on the hood. The driver steered the wheel to the left abruptly to get rid of the infected, but lost control of the car quickly ― and then hit a tree. Both Daisy and Adam jumped out of the car, horror folding their faces.
You opened the passenger’s door, standing on the edge of the car. The whole scene was hectic, your heart pounding so hard you feared it was going to explode inside your chest. You waved at them.
“RUN! OVER HERE!”, your screams drowned by the characteristic sounds of the clickers. And then the infected caught up with them, knocking them to the ground. “NO!”, you squealed as their deathly screams filled the air.
You froze in place, in shock. You couldn’t look away ― Daisy’s hand emerged from the mass of bodies she was buried under, her fingernails digging the ground to get away. You caught a glimpse of her imploring eyes, a silent plea asking you to save her.
Bile travelled up your throat, but you swallowed hard.
Joel grabbed the back of your t-shirt to pull you back inside the car and pointed to the crushed car, now on fire, the motor of yours roaring awake. Then you saw them. Dozens of infected coming towards you. Your eyes widened, but you managed to slam the door shut as Joel drove away towards Interstate 290.
His driving was manic, as if the devil himself was following you. He turned the wheel so harshly, so many times as he dodged anything and everything in his path, that you had to hold on to the grab handle.
You took a deep breath, trying to calm your nerves. You surveyed the outside world ― your forehead almost touching the window as you saw herds of clickers in motion. Hundreds of them pouring out of the buildings. You scanned the landscape in terror ― there were so many.
Now you understood why this was no man’s land.
Joel laid his hand on your left thigh, a soundless beg to look at him instead of out the glass. So you did. You gaped as if you were about to say something.
“It’s okay, we’re okay, baby”, he whispered, his eyes never leaving the highway.
You both were okay. But at what cost?
Sasha and her team. Adam and Daisy. Margaret and Jordan. And Luke and Taylor, most probably dead too.
So was the world you lived in. So fucking dead.
But you kept your promise, the paradox forgotten. You were okay.

Notes :
all links lead to the goodreads page of the book, mostly because i like to look at book cover art ;
list features authors/books that i love (T. Kingfisher, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Ursula K. Le Guin, the collections from the British Library Tales of the Weird, etc.), but also a few that i don't like and some that i have not yet read ;
if upon seeing that list the first novel you check out is by Stephen King's you have not understood the assignment ;
not all of those are strictly horror stories, some are 100% science fiction (Brian W. Aldiss' Hothouse for instance).

Without Warning - Mafia!Joel Miller Scene 9
Mafia!Joel Miller x OFC
Rating: T (injuries, blood, sad Joel, etc.)
MDNI. 18+ Content.
Summary: Joel gets his baby girl back, a little worse for wear but alive and breathing...that's all he could ask for right now...
Masterlist
Tumblr media
The address ended up being an abandoned laundromat on the east side of town. It was approaching 5AM by the time Joel pulled up in his truck, Tommy in the front passenger seat, Eric and Ethan in the back. All four men carried a minimum of two weapons and had bullet proof vests strapped to their chests.
Another truck was waiting a block away in case they needed backup. Joel wanted as few people in there with him as possible, looking to personally take out anyone involved in touching his girl. Silently, he got out and went to the bed of his truck, pulling out a sawed-off shotgun, already loaded and ready.
“Go ‘round back, I’ll check the front,” he said quietly, his senses sharp as he assessed the building for threats.
Tommy recognized the look on his brother’s face, it was the look of a lethal killer, cold-blooded and savage. He remembers that look a lot from when they were first starting out in the business, doing runs out of Joel’s old truck, getting into fights at bars and motorcycles clubs, shooting down anyone in their way. He wasn’t proud of the things they’d done back in the day, but it was survival of the fittest and both men knew they needed to survive.
“Don’t do anything stupid,” Joel muttered to Tommy, squeezing his shoulder lightly.
“You too, big brother,” Tommy said with a wicked smirk, ready to mow down anyone that stood between him and getting his favorite waitress back.
They entered the building simultaneously, hearing nothing from inside. Joel swiveled his head side to side, checking every corner and doorway with practiced stealth. He checked each room thoroughly, searching for any sign of Indi or David. Every room was empty, driving his anxiety higher the deeper he searched. What if she wasn’t even here? What if David was just trying to mess with his head? A low whistle caught his attention, Tommy’s whistle.
Moving fast, he came into a backroom, finding his brother already crouching down next to an unconscious Indi, withdrawing his fingers from the side of her neck. He gave a single nod, confirming she was still alive. Joel was next to her immediately, kneeling on the ground, his hands hovering over her body, like he was scared to touch her.
“She’s still breathin’, no sign of David or his guys,” Tommy said quietly, knowing that the ugly bruises and cuts along her arms and legs must have been painful for Joel to see.
Joel just kept staring, his heart breaking all over again at the sight of her, his hands trembling as he put them over hers. Her wrists were bound together with rope and she was curled up in a ball on the floor. Her clothes were dirty, specks of blood evident on her sleeves. There was a smear of blood at the edge of her mouth. He was fuming at the idea that David hit her. He wanted to burn him alive and then maybe tear him apart for ever touching her.
“Joel, come on man, we got to go,” Erin said, feeling nervous in the quiet, dark building, making a move to grab her, but Joel’s low growl stopped him.
“Don’t touch her,” he snarled, setting a hard glare on the other man.
He stepped back almost immediately, raising his hands. “Alright, alright,” he nodded, glancing nervously at Tommy and Ethan.
“We’ll get her fixed up, Joel, don’t worry, Henry’s already waitin’ at the house for us,” Tommy said slowly, gently putting his hand on his brother’s shoulder.
“Y-yeah…okay,” Joel nodded, finally moving into action.
Tommy took Joel’s gun off him and then he was lifting Indi into his arms. He thought getting to hold her again would bring some relief to his wounded heart, but seeing her so broken and lifeless made his stomach clench in anguish. She didn’t make any noise the entire time he carried her through the building, eyes shut, breathing shallow. He felt his chest tighten, the lump in his throat returning when she did eventually make a sound, a noise of pain after he accidently jostled her head against his chest while stepping over garbage.
“It’s okay, baby girl, I’m here now, you’re safe,” he murmured, not even caring that she most likely couldn’t hear him.
“I’ll drive, you just make sure she keeps breathing,” Tommy said once they were outside of the building.
He just nodded, climbing into the passenger seat as gingerly as possible, not wanting to shake her too much. She made a soft noise of distress once he settled her in his lap, trying to curl into herself again.
“Shh, it’s okay, darlin’, you’re safe now, I’ve got you…everything’s gonna be okay,” he tried to soothe her, running a shaking hand over her hair, noticing new marks each time they passed a street lamp.
“Anything feel broken?” Tommy asked, speeding down the backroads until he could get on the highway.
“N-no, I don’t think so,” Joel said, gently feeling along her legs and arms, stroking his thumb over her ribs and chest, feeling nothing prodding or sticking out at him.
“She’s gonna be fine, Joel,” Tommy said, trying to ease the tension in the car.
“Drive faster,” Joel demanded, not even looking at his brother, his trembling fingers stroking her cheek, his eyes scanning every inch of her face.
“I’m already goin-“
“Drive. Faster. Tommy.” Joel repeated through gritted teeth, his imposing voice leaving no room for argument.
They made it to the house in record time. Joel didn’t give a fuck about getting pulled over, his girl was hurting in his arms and he couldn’t do anything about it stuck in the truck. Eric and Ethan got the doors when Tommy came to a screeching halt in front of the house. Joel stormed into the house, calling for Henry.
“Hey, take it easy, Joel, set her on the couch,” Henry said, coming from the kitchen to find Joel in the living room.
“S-she wasn’t conscious when we found her, I don’t think anything’s broken,” he said, just now realizing how hard he was breathing, adrenaline thrumming through his body.
“Might be a minor concussion,” Henry said, “Looks like she’s got a pretty deep laceration on her left shoulder blade…” he continued, beginning to do a full assessment, voicing his findings as calmly as possible, having been briefed on the sensitivity of the situation before they arrived.
Joel watched helplessly, looking down at his arms to realize some of her blood was on his sleeves, probably from whatever cut was on her shoulder. He felt sick, his stomach knotting at the sight. He’s made people bleed a lot worse, gotten himself into situations where he was bleeding a lot worse, but something about it being specifically her blood had his heart pounding and ears ringing.
“Joel,” Henry said, pulling him from his oncoming panic attack, “I need her shirt off to stitch her back, how…how do you, um, want to, uh, do…” he trailed off awkwardly, holding the materials necessary for stitches.
Once he processed what the kid was asking, he stiffened, looking around and noticing just how many people were actually in the room. The other men seemed to realize the situation as well, lowering their gazes to the floor. He bristled at the idea of all his men seeing her so exposed.
“Everyone out. Now,” he commanded, his voice booming in the large room authoritatively.
Once the sound of shuffling feet faded, he turned back to Henry with a stiff nod. The younger man slowly cut her shirt down the back with a pair of scissors with Joel holding her up gently, cradling her in his lap when he sat on the couch, keeping her upright as Henry began to clean the wound and begin the stitches. He pulled down her bra strap, but left it on.
She whimpered softly, her body arching away from the needle after the first stroke. “J-Joel…” she murmured, gripping his shirt weakly in her fist, still unconscious as she pressed her forehead into the side of his neck.
“I’m right here, baby, I’m not goin’ anywhere,” he said softly into the crown of her head, “You’re okay…you’re okay, gotta stay still for me though,” he kept repeating, unsure of whether it was for her sake or his own.
He used his thumb to rub soft circles into her legs, trying to keep her still as Henry worked. She would hiss and twitch occasionally, but he just kept offering sweet words and gentle touches.
“Besides this,” Henry spoke, glancing curiously at Joel as he continued to work, noticing how the man’s whole demeanor was different from what he’d seen in the past, “Most of the damage is minor cuts and bruising.”
Joel hadn’t been this way with Ellie when Henry wrapped her broken ankle after falling off a horse. He hadn’t been this all over the place even when Tommy got shot. He looked like a wreck, hair a mess from running his hand through it, clothes wrinkled and dirty, his stubble unruly. Honestly, Henry felt bad seeing Joel so disheveled.Joel was a casual guy, but this was borderline homeless.
“How’d you meet?” He asked, half way through the stitches, keeping his eyes on the wound, trying to work as quickly as possible.
“…what?” Joel muttered, sounding completely out of it.
“Your girl,” Henry clarifies, nodding to her, “How’d you meet?”
“Uh,” he shook his head lightly, trying to collect his racing thoughts, “She, uh, works at the Bison, met her on her first day,” he said, smiling faintly at the memory.
“Oh yeah? Thought you didn’t like going to the bar?” Henry asked, trying to keep Joel talking, distracting him.
He scoffed. “I don't…unless she’s there,” he admits, brushing some hair from her face.
“Heard through the grapevine that you took her to meet Frank…and Bill too, I guess. Big moves, man,” he said, tying off the thread neatly.
Joel thought back to that day, which seemed like years away at this point as he looked down at her. He stroked her cheek gently, the simple gesture was enough to get her to stir again.
“Yeah…I think they liked her…” he said, voice faintly cracking at the end.
“Save the waterworks for when she wakes up, man,” Henry commented, sounding as lighthearted as possible.
He hadn’t even realized he started crying until a stray drop landed on her cheek, rolling down her jaw. Joel harshly wiped at his eyes, feeling exposed for allowing himself to cry in front of Henry. The kid just gave an understanding nod, checking her over one more time, cleaning and covering any major cuts.
“She’s going to be fine, some rest, lots of water, I’m sure she’ll wake up soon too,” Henry insisted, going back into medical mode smoothly.
“Thank you, really,” Joel said sincerely, his voice barely above a whisper.
“Wouldn’t even know how to do this if it weren’t for you,” he shrugged easily.
Joel sniffled, swallowing the lump in his throat, fixing his eyes on Henry, still a little red but no longer wet. He cleared his throat, rolling his shoulders back and straightening his back. Slowly, he stood, keeping Indi balanced in his arms, holding her close to his chest. Moving to take her into the bedroom adjacent to the living room, he paused in the arched doorway, turning to look at Henry who’d begun to clean up.
“You know if you tell anyone ‘bout what you just saw, I’ll have to kill you, right?” Joel threatened, only a hint of seriousness in his tone.
Henry scoffed with a shake of his head and a wide smile. “Yeah, I got you, boss,” he said with another laugh.
Joel smirked. “Take it easy, kid.”
He nudged the door to the guest bedroom open. Laying her on the bed before pulling the blanket off one of the arm chairs and spreading it over her. He considered changing her clothes, maybe even getting a washcloth from the en suite and wiping some of the dried blood and grime from her. Instead, he chose to leave her alone, unsure of how she might react to his unsolicited touch after waking up. He didn’t know where he stood with her and didn’t want to make things any worse than they already were between them.
Brushing the hair out of her face, he leaned over, pressing his dry lips to her forehead, inhaling slowly. Feeling her, seeing her, and breathing in her familiar scent, it all proved that she was real and that she was alive. At the moment, that’s all he could ask for, choosing to push away any thoughts of their relationship until a later time, just thankful she was okay and safe.
“You’re home now, baby, I’m gonna take care of this…”

MY VERY SPOILERY THOUGHTS ON THE LITTLE MERMAID
I’m going absolutely feral after seeing The Little Mermaid. My inner child has been FED, and I HAVE NO ONE TO TALK TO ABOUT IT YET so here I am to spew my thoughts. Spoilers below:
1. Halle was perfect. I will accept no criticism on this point. The only thing I cared about when this live-action movie was announced was that our new Ariel would have a voice to match Jodi Benson’s, and Halle did more than deliver. She epitomized the spirit of Ariel in every way. She was playful, she was inquisitive, she was joyful and bright and fun, she was so good at tugging the heartstrings (even without dialogue!!!) and appealing to our innate wanderlust and desire to discover and experience,  and she was so so EARNEST in her portrayal I can’t even.
2. THE DEPTH THEY ADDED TO PRINCE ERIC’S CHARACTER OKAY!?!?! LIKE?!?!?! Okay, I will NOT GET OVER THIS. It was SO CLEVER of them to mirror Ariel’s journey with his desire to break free of his position’s restrictions. It worked incredibly well and did not once detract from our heroine’s spotlight. Rather, it ENHANCED their connection and sold me on their three-day love story in a deeper and more meaningful way than the original did (more on that below). ALSO ALSO ALSO SO COOL of them not to kill off his ADOPTIVE mother. ADOPTIVE. Marvelous choice! Truly. His mother’s fear of the sea gods offered a parallel to Triton’s fear of the surface world, and *CHEFS KISS*
3. Melissa McCarthy’s Pour Unfortunate Souls was a FUN TIME.
4. Awkwafina as Scuttle? Inspired.
5. MAX WAS ADORABLE AND THE STAR OF THE SHOW EVERY TIME HE WAS ON SCREEN. BEST BOY.
6. Wherever they filmed? The castle? Fucking gorgeous.
7. JODI BENSON CAMEOOOOOOO
8. Grimsby is the GOAT. Enough said.
9. NEW SONGS
I may get some hate for this, but I’m not the biggest fan of Lin-Manuel Miranda.  Idk how to put this. He has an insane amount of talent, but for...untraditional musicals. I wouldn’t say he’d be my first choice to write new songs that fit the more traditional Broadway-like musical vibes that characterized so much of the Disney Renaissance.
That being said, The Scuttlebutt was the strongest of the bunch, I think. It was very much a Miranda song, and in most instances, I’d be a little irritated by how they included a song that has a style so different from the rest of the lyrical music we know and love from the original animated movie. But it worked here, likely because it was delivered by Awkwafina’s Scuttle and FIT the character.
Honorable mention to Wild Uncharted Waters, only because WOW Jonah Hauer-King went OFF on that performance. This boy said “I get one musical number and I’m going to KILL IT” and he did.
Also very much liked the Part of Your World (Reprise II)! It tied everything together really nicely.
10. THE OTHER NOTABLE CHANGES I NEED TO SCREAM ABOUT
I LOVE THAT ARIEL HESITATED BEFORE CHOOSING TO GO THROUGH WITH THE SPELL.
I LOVE THAT ARIEL WAS FORCED TO FORGET SHE NEEDED A KISS FROM ERIC. --> THIS. THIS IS FREAKING AMAZING. I can’t even express how much more I felt for Ariel and Eric’s love story. How much more real it felt. How much more believable and true. I don’t buy in to one-day (or few-day) love stories very easily, especially when physical intimacy/attraction is a driving force. My little aroace ass dug the fact that kissing Eric literally was the last thing on Ariel’s mind. She got to be herself, explore this new world, AND do it with someone who appreciated her curiosity and found joy in how much joy she was experiencing, who could have just as much fun as she could. God. Goals.
I LOVE THAT ERIC KNEW SOMETHING WASN’T RIGHT WITH VANESSA, EVEN IF HE COULDN’T PUT HIS FINGER ON IT. Very reminiscent of Prince of Song and Sea by Linsey Miller (a YA AU retelling told from Prince Eric’s POV. It’s a fun, easy read, if you’re curious).
I LOVE THAT ARIEL ACTIVELY TACKLED VANESSA AND BROKE THE SHELL NECKLACE HERSELF.
I LOVE THAT ARIEL WAS THE ONE TO STAB URSULA. I LOVE THAT SO MUCH. WE LOVE A BADASS HEROINE WHO DON’T NEED NO MAN TO SAVE HER.
All of these changes were important and mean a lot to me. I think it challenges a lot of the issues people have with the original animated movie, in that, here in the 2023 version, no one can argue that Ariel made her choices because she was lusting after a man. Or that she’s a damsel in distress. Very good stuff there.
11. My critiques
Some of the cinematography was weird. The transition between acting scenes and singing scenes didn’t always flow right. They felt abrupt and awkward. I definitely worried a bit about the CGI too, and it wasn’t too terrible imo.
And my biggest complaint: idk what it was about the ending, but it didn’t *quite* hit right. In the original animated movie, one of the last bits of dialogue comes from Triton, when he says, “...how much I’m going to miss her.” The finale of the animated movie is then a spectacle of swelling music and a heartfelt case of “show” rather than “tell.” The hug between Ariel and Triton on the wedding barge is perfect. The way in which the mer-people come to witness the wedding and send off Eric and Ariel is perfect.
The live-action ending felt...a little too somber. It became too much about Triton letting go and not enough about Ariel and Eric setting off on adventure together or about their worlds colliding in peace. I wouldn’t say that the last conversation between Triton and Ariel in the 2023 movie cheapens the line “...how much I’m going to miss her” and the bittersweetness with which he gifts her back her human legs, but it came close. I would have MUCH rather had a little more from Eric and Ariel than from Triton. LIKE HELLO??? WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT RING GRIMSBY KICKED AWAY!??? THERE WAS SOMETHING THEY COULD HAVE USED RIGHT THERE. Or better yet: if they wanted to do something super touching, they could have had Eric’s mother and Triton do a short aside by themselves, or perhaps even have a sort of moment where they acknowledge each other with respect/compassion/understanding before we all refocused on Ariel and Eric for the grand finale. But nah, they did what they did, and I’ll be a bit salty about it forever.
But anyway. Overall, I was very pleased. My disappointment with the lack of emotional impact from the ending does not supersede my enjoyment of everything else.
If you made it this far, please share your thoughts! I’m eager to talk to people, because all my friends aren’t like me and didn’t go see it opening night, lol.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
May 31, 2024
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
JUN 01, 2024
Today felt as if there was a collective inward breath as people tried to figure out what yesterday’s jury verdict means for the upcoming 2024 election. The jury decided that former president Trump created fraudulent business records in order to illegally influence the 2016 election. As of yesterday, the presumptive Republican nominee for president of the United States of America is a convicted felon.
Since the verdict, Trump and his supporters have worked very hard to spin the conviction as a good thing for his campaign, but those arguments sound like a desperate attempt to shape a narrative that is spinning out of their control. Newspapers all over the country bore the word “GUILTY” in their headlines today.
At stake for Trump is the Republican presidential nomination. Getting it would pave his way to the presidency, which offers him financial gain and the ability to short-circuit the federal prosecutions that observers say are even tighter cases than the state case in which a jury quickly and unanimously found him guilty yesterday. Not getting it leaves Trump and the MAGA supporters who helped him try to steal the 2020 presidential election at the mercy of the American justice system.
After last night’s verdict, Trump went to the cameras and tried to establish that the nomination remains his, asserting that voters would vindicate him on November 5. But this morning, as he followed up last night’s comments, he did himself no favors. He billed the event as a “press conference,” but delivered what Michael Grynbaum of the New York Times described as “a rambling and misleading speech,” so full of grievance and unhinged that the networks except the Fox News Channel cut away from it as he attacked trial witnesses, called Judge Merchan “the devil,” and falsely accused President Joe Biden of pushing his prosecution. He took no questions from the press.
Today the Trump campaign told reporters it raised $34.8 million from small-dollar donors in the hours after the guilty verdict, but observers pointed out there was no reason to believe those numbers based on statements from Trump’s campaign. Meanwhile, Trump advisor Stephen Miller shouted on the Fox News Channel that every Republican secretary of state, state attorney general, donor, member of Congress must use their power “RIGHT NOW” to “beat these Communists!”
The attempt of MAGA lawmakers to shape events in their favor seemed just as panicked. Representative Jim Banks (R-IN) posted on social media that “New York is a liberal sh*t hole,” and Jim Jordan (R-OH) today asked Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg, who brought the case against Trump, to testify before the House Judiciary’s Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government about “politically motivated prosecutions of…President Donald Trump.” Representative Dan Goldman (D-NY) noted that Trump is a private citizen and Congress has no jurisdiction over the case, but that Jordan is using his congressional authority illegally to defend Trump.
MAGA senators were even more strident. Republican senator Mike Lee of Utah melted down on X last night over the verdict, and today he led nine other Republican senators in a revolt against the federal government. Lee, J. D. Vance of Ohio, Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, Eric Schmitt of Missouri, Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, Rick Scott of Florida, Roger Marshall of Kansas, Marco Rubio of Florida, Josh Hawley of Missouri, and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin issued a public letter saying they would no longer pass legislation, fund the government, or vote to confirm the administration’s appointees because, they said, “[t]he White House has made a mockery of the rule of law and fundamentally altered our politics in un-American ways. As a Senate Republican conference,” they said, although there were only 10 of them, “we are unwilling to aid and abet this White House in its project to tear this country apart.”
It was an odd statement seemingly designed to use disinformation to convince voters to stick with them. Ten senators said they would not do the federal jobs they were elected to do because private citizen Trump was convicted in a state court by a jury of 12 people in New York, a jury that Trump’s lawyers had agreed to. The senators attacked the rule of law and the operation of the federal government in a demonstration of support for Trump. A number of the senators involved were key players in the attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
Awkwardly, considering the day’s news, a video from 2016 circulated today in which Trump insisted that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, who he falsely insisted had committed crimes even as he was the one actually committing them, “shouldn’t be allowed to run.” If she were to win, Trump then said, “it would create an unprecedented constitutional crisis. In that situation, we could very well have a sitting president under felony indictment and, ultimately, a criminal trial. It would grind government to a halt.”
Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo put it correctly: this is not an “outpouring of rage and anger,” so much as “an overwhelming effort to match and muffle the earthquake of what happened yesterday afternoon with enough noise and choreography to keep everyone in Trump’s campaign and on the margins of it in line and on side.”
Still, there is more behind the MAGA support for Trump than fearful political messaging. Trump has been hailed as a savior by his supporters because he promises to smash through the laws and norms of American democracy to put them into power. There, they can assert their will over the rest of us, achieving the social and religious control they cannot achieve through democratic means because they cannot win the popular vote in a free and fair election. With Trump’s conviction within the legal system, his supporters are more determined than ever to destroy the rules that block them from imposing their will on the rest of us.
Today the Federalist Society, which is now aligned with Victor Orbán’s Hungary, flew an upside-down U.S. flag as a signal of national distress. Their actions were in keeping with Russian president Vladimir Putin’s statement that Trump is being persecuted “for political reasons” and that the cases show “the rottenness of the American political system, which cannot pretend to teach others about democracy.”
Ryan J. Reilly of NBC News reported today on a spike in violent rhetoric on social media targeting New York judge Juan Merchan, who oversaw Trump’s Manhattan election interference trial, and District Attorney Bragg. Users of a fringe internet message board also shared what they claimed were the addresses of jurors. “Dox the Jurors. Dox them now,” one user wrote. Another wrote, “1,000,000 men (armed) need to go to [W]ashington and hang everyone. That’s the only solution.”
This attack on our democracy was the central message of a crucially important story from yesterday that got buried under the news of Trump’s conviction. In The New Republic, Ken Silverstein reported on a private WhatsApp group started last December by military contractor Erik Prince—founder of Blackwater and brother of Trump’s secretary of education, Betsy DeVos—and including about 650 wealthy and well-connected “right-wing government officials, intelligence operatives, arms traffickers, and journalists,” including Representative Ryan Zinke (R-MT), who served as Trump’s secretary of the interior.
Called “Off Leash,” the group discussed, as Silverstein wrote, “the shortcomings of democracy that invariably resulted from extending the franchise to ordinary citizens, who are easily manipulated by Marxists and populists,” collapsing Gaza into a “fiery hell pit,” wiping out Iran, how Africa was a “sh*thole of a continent,” and ways to dominate the globe. Mostly, though, they discussed the danger of letting everyone vote. “There is only one path forward,” Zinke wrote. “Elect Trump.” Another member answered, “It’s Trump or Revolution” “You mean Trump AND Revolution,” wrote another.
And yet the frantic MAGA spin on the verdict reveals that there is another way to interpret it. Americans who had lost faith that the justice system could ever hold a powerful man accountable as Trump’s lawyers managed to put off his many indictments see the verdict as a welcome sign that the system still works.
“The American principle that no one is above the law was reaffirmed,” Biden said today. “Donald Trump was given every opportunity to defend himself. It was a state case, not a federal case. And it was heard by a jury of 12 citizens, 12 Americans, 12 people like you. Like millions of Americans who served on juries, this jury is chosen the same way every jury in America is chosen. It was a process that Donald Trump's attorney was part of. The jury heard five weeks of evidence…. After careful deliberation, the jury reached a unanimous verdict. They found Donald Trump guilty on all 34 felony counts. Now he’ll be given the opportunity as he should to appeal that decision just like everyone else has that opportunity. That's how the American system of justice works. And it's reckless, it's dangerous, and it's irresponsible for anyone to say this was rigged just because they don't like the verdict. Our justice system has endured for nearly 250 years and it literally is the cornerstone of America…. The justice system should be respected, and we should never allow anyone to tear it down. It’s as simple as that. That's America. That's who we are. And that's who we will always be, God willing.”
Today the publisher of Dinesh D’Souza’s book and film 2000 Mules, which alleged voter fraud in the 2020 election, said it was pulling both the book and film from distribution and issued an apology to a Georgia man who sued for defamation after 2000 Mules accused him of voting illegally.
MAGA Republicans confidently predicted yesterday that the stock market would crash if the jury found Trump guilty. Today the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained almost 600 points.

on august 28, 2022, ethan blair miller (pictured above) opened fire in a safeway in bend, oregon. miller killed two people before turning the gun on himself.
miller kept an online journal on the website wattpad, named ‘the downward spiral of ethan miller’. this was in reference to the nine inch nails album, the downward spiral. miller was a known fan of this band, as well as other bands like KMFDM and disturbed.
unsurprisingly, miller had a fascination with the columbine shooters, eric harris and dylan klebold. however, miller undoubtedly had a preference for klebold; his wattpad username was wrathofman22, and the shirt he wore on the day of the shooting was reminiscent of klebold’s ‘WRATH’ shirt during columbine.
in his journal, miller described his fascination with the columbine shooters, his anger against COVID-19 restrictions, and general rage against society. he blamed COVID-19 for the reason he was so isolated.
miller was heavily influenced by harris and klebold, and he’d originally planned on attacking his old high school—mountain view high school—but decided that he “couldn’t wait” for school to start again and instead attacked the safeway he’d been formerly employed at.
on the day of the shooting, miller was armed with an AR-15 style rifle and a shotgun. he was wearing an outfit very reminiscent of the columbine shooters—featuring black pants, black combat boots, and a t-shirt with the word ‘HURT’ across the chest in bold, red letters.
Tumblr media
at 7:04 PM, miller shot 84-year-old customer glenn edward bennett at the west entrance to the safeway.
as miller moved further into the safeway, he was attacked with a knife by 66-year-old donald ray surrett jr., who was an employee. surrett attempted to disarm miller after stabbing him with a produce knife, but failed, and was shot to death. surrett stabbing miller potentially prevented multiple other deaths.
at 7:08 PM, miller was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
