Mike Oldfield's 90's? Well, they were mostly weird with The Songs Of The Distant Earth being one of the most obvious albums a 70's musician in the vein of him could have done during the 90's. I would need more room to elucidate what I mean here, but I'll try to be succinct – Oldfield noticed the sci-fi zeitgeist of the early 90's, he behaved according to that and he could've even succeeded thanks to his previous work – he's basically a sci-fi geek that made his own version of progressive rock –, yet something felt way off. Was he trying too hard? There could be many reasons. I'd suggest he liked the freedom of the tools he had at the time – he always made the best use of his studios –, though he didn't find a way to use them well, so he settled for the bland.

Album Review: Joe Satriani - Shapeshifting
Release Date: 10 Apr 2020

Joe Satriani’s new studio album, Shapeshifting, which came out last month, was co-produced by Satriani and Jim Scott who has worked with the Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Tom Petty.
For "Shapeshifting", Satriani has enlisted a wide range of collaborators to help him bring the songs to life. Legendary drummer Kenny Aronoff (John Fogerty), bassist Chris Chaney (Jane’s Addiction) and keyboardist Eric Caudieux were the core musicians on the new album, with additional contributions coming from Lisa Coleman (The Revolution) and Christopher Guest.
The retro sound and feel of the first single, “Nineteen Eighty” finds Satriani spiritually revisiting the time period when he was working with his first band, the Squares. The guitar says that in those early days, they “dialed back the guitar solos and histrionics to try to create a cooler new wave vibe.” Decades removed from those goals, he is now free to attempt to recapture what was on his mind in 1980.
Staying true to the sounds of the time, he even used a vintage MXR EVH phaser. Joe Satriani says, “I’ve always been a huge fan of Eddie Van Halen. In my mind, he just crystallized that era. The late ‘70s and early ‘80s, he kind of saved rock guitar. So that’s what I would have been doing.”
For two decades, the guitar virtuoso has travelled the world, playing to sold-out crowds as both a headliner and as founder of the all-star “G3” guitar extravaganza.  His studio and live recordings have sold more than 10 million copies worldwide to date and of his many solo albums, two have gone platinum and four others went gold, with 15 Grammy nominations between them.
Satriani's also has a side project, Chickenfoot, which features former Van Halen front man Sammy Hagar, former bassist Michael Anthony, and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ drummer Chad Smith.

You early success gives you the riches and even the freedom to do anything you wish, yet you keep trying to escape from that triumph to no avail, you toil your pieces. I mean, Mike Oldfield had one of the funniest careers – there are some rumours he retired, so that's why I shall be using the past tense –, if you ask me. He kept trying to run away from Tubular Bells, yet he was pulled back in to paraphrase Coppola. Still, Tubular Bells II should not be seen as a legacy sequel. Sure, he doesn't reach the original, yet look at the disc as a variation, not a continuation. Maybe that's why he sounds relaxed on the album, since he's working in the environment he's familiar with. While the latter actually served him well later on, he didn't always succeed in deploying that.

HÍR: Joe Satriani – új lemezével érkezik Budapestre a gitárlegenda
HÍR: Joe Satriani – új lemezével érkezik Budapestre a gitárlegenda - http://metalindex.hu/2020/03/04/hir-joe-satriani-uj-lemezevel-erkezik-budapestre-a-gitarlegenda/ -
Április 10-én jelenik meg Joe Satriani legújabb, 18. lemeze, ami után pár nappal kezdetét is veszi egy több hónapig tartó lemezbemutató turné. A Shapeshifting Tour keretében a gitáros május 8-án érkezik Budapestre, ahol a Barba Negra Track színpadán játszik majd.
A G3 gitárosturné alapítójaként és a Chickenfoot tagjaként is ismert amerikai zenész, Joe Satriani Kenny Aronoff dobossal (John Fogerty), Bryan Beller basszusgitárossal (The Aristocrats) és Rai Thistlethwayte billentyűssel (Thirsty Merc) turnézik ebben a szezonban, a koncerteken pedig hangsúlyos szerepet kap az áprilisban megjelenő Shapeshifting album. Természetesen a régi nagy kedvencek sem maradnak ki a programból: biztosan hallhatjuk majd a Cherry Blossoms-t, az Always with Me, Always with You-t, a Flying In A Blue Dreamet és persze a Surfing With The Alient is: https://youtu.be/d_0khAAItqg
A dalhoz készült videoklipet maga Joe fia, ZZ Satriani rendezte: https://youtu.be/xSayYNy28TA
a Concerto Music bemutatja: The Shapeshifting Tour 2020. május 8., péntek 18 óra Budapest, Barba Negra Track Joe Satriani koncert Belépő: normál elővételben 9900 Ft, a koncert napján 11.900 Ft. Jegyek kaphatók a www.rock1.hu és a www.tixa.hu weboldalon, és a Ticketportal hálózatában.

Joe Satriani announces release date for new studio album

Joe Satriani's new studio album, Shapeshifting, is set for release on 10th April 2020. The first single, “Nineteen Eighty”, is now available on all streaming platforms.
The new album was co-produced by Satriani and Jim Scott (Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) with longtime associate John Cuniberti on board handling the mastering duties. Satriani enlisted a wide range of collaborators, both old and new, to help him bring the songs to life. Legendary drummer Kenny Aronoff (John Fogerty), bassist Chris Chaney (Jane’s Addiction) and keyboardist Eric Caudieux were the core musicians on the new album with additional contributions coming from Lisa Coleman (The Revolution) and Christopher Guest.
The retro feeling sounds of first single, “Nineteen Eighty” finds Satriani spiritually revisiting the time period when he was working with his first band, the Squares. The future guitar hero the world came to know less than a decade later, would have to wait. He recalls that in those early days, they “dialed back the guitar solos and histrionics to try to create a cooler new wave vibe.” Decades removed from those goals, he was free to go forward and attempt to recapture what was on his mind in 1980.
Staying true to the sounds of the time, he even used a vintage MXR EVH phaser. “I’ve always been a huge fan of Eddie Van Halen,” Satriani says. “In my mind, he just crystallized that era. The late ‘70s and early ‘80s, he kind of saved rock guitar. So that’s what I would have been doing.”
As previously announced, Joe Satriani will embark on “The Shapeshifting Tour” beginning on 15th April with a 42-date European leg that currently winds up in mid-June. Additional dates, including the U.S., to be announced soon. The 2020 touring band features celebrated drummer Kenny Aronoff (John Fogerty), bassist Bryan Beller (Aristocrats) and keyboardist Rai Thistlethwayte (Thirsty Merc) joining SATRIANI on guitar.
For two decades, the guitar virtuoso has travelled the world, playing to sold-out crowds as both a headliner and as founder of the all-star “G3” guitar extravaganza.  SATRIANI’s studio and live recordings have sold more than 10 million copies worldwide to date and of his many solo albums, two have gone platinum and four others went gold, with 15 Grammy nominations between them.  His side project, Chickenfoot, featuring former Van Halen front man Sammy Hagar, former bassist Michael Anthony, and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ drummer Chad Smith saw their debut album certified gold and their second studio album debuted at number 9.
Joe Satriani ‘The Shapeshifting’ 2020 UK Tour Fri 22 May -  De La Warr Pavilion Sat 23 May - Glasgow O2 Academy Sun 24 May - Sage Gateshead Mon 25 May - Manchester Bridgewater Hall Tue 26 May - London Palladium Thu 28 May - Birmingham Symphony Hall
