BALANCE UNLIMITED THEORY TIME

okokokok so I just rewatched the entirety of balance unlimited and I have four new main points to make

1.) Daisuke is the heir of the Kambe family, but only in name, while the actual heir is hidden from the public.

2.) Kambe Shigemaru (the implied actual heir) KILLED KAMBE SAYURI which is why he needs to be hidden from the public eye.

3.) Both Kato and Cho-San got too close to the truth of the hidden heir (or some other kambe secret) which is why they got transferred to the trash division.

4.) The trash division is not actually a police division, and was only made up to shelter Kato and Cho-San and prevent them from receiving police intel to get closer to the truth.

FOR #1:

(We’ve talked about this before but not in this perspective)

Everybody: the police chief, Haru, the president, knows *Kambe Daisuke* as the heir of the Kambe family.

Daisuke has never denied this.

However, in episode five, he says to the president “There will never be a day where I succeed as head of the Kambe family,” not “I am not the heir of the Kambe family.”

Ergo,

He is the heir but he will not succeed the house.

For #2:

Daisuke knows that Cho-San was involved in the murder case of Sayuri Kambe. (The weird vibes they give off + confrontation on the rooftop)

When he is interrogating the woman in episode 6, he says every confidential thing out loud: the bomb, the company, the file names, FUCKING HEUSC IS BROADCASTING THE LAPTOP SCREEN ON THE WALL, but you know what he leeeeeeans in to her ear to whisper?

The ONLY thing he whispers in her ear?

Kambe Shigemaru.

Only Haru and Cho-San are listening. Haru clearly doesn’t understand what’s going on.

Ergo,

Daisuke is hiding the name Kambe Shigemaru (the assumed heir) from Cho-San for some reason (which may be the murder of Sayuri Kambe).

For #3:

Cho-San is way too smart to be transferred to a trash division.

Haru’s reason for being demoted doesn’t make sense. Why would he be punished for shooting a woman who would have killed him otherwise?

Also, from the second episode, Kamei tells us that NO INFO is passed to the trash division, to the extent that they find out about MURDERS from the NEWS.

Again, from the second episode, we know that Katou is both determined and incredibly competent, managing to follow a trail of info and break into a meeting of a drug syndicate to stealing a member’s phone.

We know that Cho got too close to something, and was kicked off the case, forced to rely on his own informants to keep pursuing it. We know said case involved not only the murder of Sayuri Kambe but the Kambe family’s manufacturing of bombs.

*the girl who tried to shoot Haru in the robbery may have been hired by the Kambe family to get rid of Haru, a hypercompetent justice-following detective that was getting too close to *something*

They’re repeatedly withheld from information and thrust into dangerous situations where they may die. The police have been bought off. They no longer care what happens to Cho or Haru, and want to keep them out of the way.

FOR #4:

ITS ESTABLISHED VERY EARLY THAT THE TRASH DIVISION BARELY DOES ANYTHING.

Also, none of the members have police training.

In episode 5, Haru gets on Kamei’s shoulders and tells him to lift him up, and Kamei can’t. Haru is surprised and questions his police training.

The three coworkers are very clearly not police officers. They are either just hired normal people working a “temp job” or paid off by the Kambe family but told nothing, which is why they threw Haru under the bus and got him thrown off the case.

The division is just an isolation room to keep Haru and Cho (the wildcards) away from the action.

So what’s next?

WE KNOW DAISUKE IS REBELLING FROM THE FAMILY (ran away in episode 4) AND THAT HE’S FOLLOWING HARU (coincidentally switches from major crimes to trash division at the same time as haru) AND THAT HIM AND CHO ARE ABOUT TO STRIKE A DEAL (end of episode 6).

Considering the number of death flags Cho keeps triggering,,,, it seems we might have a

Save Me: Chapter 28 - Look Death in the Face

~Hey guys! Chapter 28 is out now!! Negan finally gets what has been coming to him for a while...Will Molly be able to deal with his fate? I hope everyone is having a good week :) Love you all <3~

This was it. For both leaders, it was finally time to look death in the face and accept it. For most, this was the physical death of their enemy, whereas for Molly, this meant the emotional death of her loved one in her heart and her former self.

Rick and I led them across the field and towards the Sanctuary which we could now see in the distance.

Everyone was focussed and determined, no fear now just pure hatred, except me.

As we all moved stealthily as one we were halted by a loud blood curdling whistle.

It was them.

The noise surrounded us as it felt like it came from all directions.

I looked at Rick and Maggie who were turning around frantically trying to find out where the noise came from.

My heart felt like it was pounding in my mouth as my breathing became more rapid.

I squinted to try and see any Saviours over the hill, there were none yet that haunting sound ensued.

All of a sudden a voice on a megaphone tauntingly shouted 'well shit Rick! Would you look at that? I just ambushed your ambush with an even bigger ambush!'.

Shit it was Negan. He sounded vengeful, almost dark.

I pictured his eyes which wouldn't be that light shade of amber anymore.

He wanted us all dead, I knew that now.

Rick was getting pissed off now.

'How about you step out and face us?' he shouted.

We heard a loud chuckle then Negan said 'Oh Rick I am everywhere! Pick a direction to run, see how you do. Make it fun for all of us!'.

We couldn't escape even if we wanted to, Rick would never let this go.

'Guess what else I did...I brought some of your old friends' he said confidently.

If my ears could prick up, they would have now.

I knew he meant Eugene but the only other would have been Gabriel, but we all thought he had escaped.

'You remember your old buddy Eugene? Well, he is the one that made today possible. Same goes for Dwighty-boy here' Negan shouted.

I looked at Rosita who was scowling now at Eugene's betrayal.

I just hoped he would do the right thing, everything was riding on that.

He knew about Dwight's helping us.

Even though I never forgave him for Denise, neither would Tara, I still couldn't let him die.

I readied my gun when Negan said 'In case you were wondering, he didn't ream you on purpose. No, he's just a gutless fucker that sucks at life and now he gets to stand up here and watch you all die, he has to live with that'.

At this the Saviours stepped forward and formed a line in front of us so that they just peaked over the hill.

'Gabriel, well he's gotta go too. We are cleaning house today Rick' Negan added.

I looked through my binoculars to see Negan holding a gun up to Gabriel's head and Dwight standing beside them, wearing a prisoner uniform.

I scanned for Simon frantically, wanting to take a shot at him first, but he wasn't there.

At all.

Negan was there to show his full force and would've brought his right hand man, unless he was dead.

I smirked vengefully just thinking about it.

'And then there's you. It never had to be a fight, you just had to accept how things were. So here we go, congratulations Rick! This is all on you, you can blame yourself for Molly now as well' Negan said almost with a twinge of sadness in his voice.

Why would Rick blame himself for me?

I shot him a confused look, until the realisation hit me.

He had told him I was dead. What if Negan's anger towards 'mourning' me was gonna get us all killed.

Rick just looked at Negan, avoiding my gaze.

'Goddamn it Rick!' I whispered to him, even Michonne shot him a look of disappointment.

'Three, two, one...' Negan counted down until we heard a loud bang and Saviours dropping like flies.

He had done it! I smirked as I looked at Eugene.

'Now!' Rick shouted as we ran towards them.

Negan's gun had backfired and a casing had torn through his right hand.

'Eugene!' he yelled in pain.

Gabriel punched him in the face as Dwight tried to wrestle him against the bonnet of his car.

Negan managed to push him off with Lucille and ran towards the woods.

'He's running!' Maggie shouted as Rick went after him.

'Keep going! To the rendezvous point, the others should already be there' I shouted to everyone else as we gained on the Saviours who were falling to their knees.

'Don't shoot! Please. We're done. It's over' Laura said as they all put their hands up and surrendered their weapons.

I nodded to her, she had been kind to me at the Sanctuary and after all Rick only wanted Negan dead.

Once they had surrendered, I ran after Rick.

My heart pounding out of my chest and my breathing becoming more irregular when I saw Rick and Negan by a tree with stained glass hanging off its branches.

Negan's POV//

Rick came rushing around the tree as I knocked him to the ground with Lucille.

'Just so you know, the eeny meeny miny moe, that was bullshit. I made a choice, I just didn't wanna kill kid's dad right in front of him. Turns out, that would've been the best thing I could've done. Had I done it, that kid might've still been alive' I taunted.

At this Rick kicked my legs, knocking me off my feet as I fell on my back.

'You're beat. Your people are down' Rick said breathlessly.

I groaned as I stood up slowly, saying 'I'll get out of it, I always do'.

'It's just you and me Rick. You, you are torn open. I am bigger, I am badder and I got a bat' I said smirking at him lying there on the grass.

Like hell I was gonna die.

'We can have...a future' Rick said, his voice straining on every word as he winced in pain.

I smiled, saying 'I know I will'.

He tried to stand up and pleaded, 'just give me ten seconds. I can tell you how'.

I scowled at him, thinking about Molly and how she might be dead because of both of us.

'No' I answered.

'Please just give me ten seconds for Carl' he begged, now standing.

I paused and nodded.

Now I started counting, 'ten...nine'.

'Carl said, it doesn't have to be...be a fight anymore' he said struggling to speak.

I held Lucille up and scowled saying 'he was wrong, eight...'.

Rick panted and said 'no, no he was right'.

My scowl hardened at his pleading for his life until I saw her.

Molly was standing there, behind Rick.

Tears fell down my face as I looked at her.

'M-Mol...' was all I managed as suddenly Rick ninja sliced open my jugular with a piece of glass he found on the grass.

I dropped to my knees, my gaze still firmly on hers.

I knew I would die and I wanted her to be the last thing I saw.

She gasped and covered her mouth as she lunged forward, Michonne stopping her from reaching me.

The others stood beside her, including the widow.

Rick waited for a minute and walked towards them, blood gushing from my neck as I tried to stop it with my hand.

'Save him' Rick said to some doctor.

Those words rang in my ears as I saw Molly's look of relief and the widow screaming 'No!'.

I wasn't relieved when I heard Rick's words.

I wanted to die, after what I did and who I hurt the most, I couldn't face her.

'No! He can't...he killed Glenn!' the widow shouted as Michonne held her back.

I was fading in and out of consciousness when I felt someone stitch up my neck and cover it with a bandage.

'We have to!' Rick shouted to her as she yelled 'we have to end it! Rick! We have to make it right. It's not over till he's dead!'.

When I stopped bleeding I saw Molly looking down now.

She was happy I was alive, but I knew that changed nothing between us.

I really felt like dying now.

'There's gotta be something after' Rick said to the widow as he now addressed my men.

They still had their hands up, they had surrendered.

'Everyone put your hands down, you're all gonna go home now' Rick shouted as they put their hands down slowly.

'Negan's alive. But his way of doing things is over! Anyone who can't live with that will pay the price, I promise you that. Any person here who would live in peace and fairness, who would find common ground, this world is yours by right' he shouted.

'We are life, that's death! It's coming for us, unless we stand together' he shouted pointing at the distant hoard of walkers.

'Go home, then the work begins. The new world begins. All this, all this is just what was. There's gotta be something after!' Rick yelled as some guys lifted me onto a stretcher and put me in the back of a van.

The fuckers were gonna take me to Alexandria, I knew it.

Molly's POV//

It was a curious feeling, the man I loved was alive and yet dead at the same time.

Tears flowed down my face as I watched them take him away.

I never wanted him dead, but seeing how much his presence affected my family made me feel even worse.

Michonne and I held Maggie as she curled up on the grass and sobbed for Glenn's memory.

I understood Rick and I agreed with him, but seeing Maggie like that broke my heart into a million tiny pieces.

Rosita stood next to us with Eugene who had now returned to us.

'What happened to the guns? That you?' she asked him.

Eugene turned to me as I stroked Maggie's hair and nodded.

'Us. We introduced the sabotage aspect to the manufacturing process unbeknownst to my colleagues which was inspired by Molly's purposeful determination and resilience. Plus a few things you imparted on me before I left. Ergo I created a modicum of phooey for kablooie' he said seriously.

Rosita smiled and turned to me and nodded a 'thank you'.

I smiled back, there was a change in the air after that.

I practically felt people warm to me again.

As I looked around, I saw Gabriel and Eugene but not Dwight.

A rush of panic washed over me as I couldn't see him.

The Saviours were now leaving but I saw Laura and I ran over to her to ask her what happened to him.

She smiled weakly and said that he had left but left a note in one of the cars.

I nodded a thank you and ran back to where the Saviour's cars were.

I checked each one before seeing a small folded piece of white paper stuck to the windscreen of presumably Negan's car.

I looked around me to check no one was there and opened it slowly, it read:

Molly,

I always knew you'd make it, thats just the type of person you are.

A while after you escaped, I helped Sherry get away too. I'm not sure where she is but I promise to always keep looking for her. I'm not coming back.

I don't know whether Negan will be dead by the time you read this, but if he isn't, be careful.

Dwight.

I folded it back up and sighed, the guy had practically predicted it.

Negan was like a cat with nine lives.

Just as I was about to walk back, I saw Negan's red scarf on the front seat in the car.

I hesitated but then grabbed a rock and smashed the window so I could grab it.

I held it between my fingers and pressed it against my cheek.

His smell was all over it and it reminded me of our time together.

I didn't know whether I would ever give it back to him, but I couldn't leave it there.

I stuffed it into my jacket pocket, along with Dwight's letter and set off after my family.

Mountain Biking For Beginners

There are many ways to enjoy mountain biking, and you don’t even have to be in the mountains. Trails vary from pleasant rides on wide, flowing logging roads to high-adrenaline challenges on technical singletrack.

In this article, we'll tell you the basics of what to expect before your first ride, including an overview of different types of mountain bike terrain, styles of mountain biking and basics for getting geared up for a fun time on the trails.

Types of Mountain Bike Terrain 

While you might start out on trails that are relatively smooth and flat, your ability to navigate around—or over—obstacles will develop as you gain experience and becomes part of the fun of the sport. Mountain-bike-specific trails are typically marked by skill level (beginner, intermediate, expert and double expert) and are maintained.

Singletrack, the most common trail type, has a width that varies from just a little wider than your shoulders on up to a track that's just wide enough for two bikes to pass. Many singletrack trails are open to one-way travel and wind their way through the best terrain that the landscape offers.

Doubletrack trails are normally double the width (or more) of a typical singletrack trail with enough room for two bikes to ride side-by-side. Often doubletrack trails follow abandoned logging roads, fire roads or power-line roads, where the tires of vehicles created two single tracks. Doubletrack trails are usually a gentler grade than singletrack and tend to have less-technical features.

Mountain bike terrain parks are popping up everywhere from jump-and-pump tracks under urban overpasses to lift-serviced trails at ski resorts. Expect such features as elevated bridges, half pipes, jumps of various sizes, berms, banked corners and hairy downhill switchbacks.

Mountain Biking Styles

Many bike manufacturers categorize their bikes based on the following mountain biking styles to help you decide what type of bike is appropriate for you.

Trail: This is arguably the most common mountain biking style because the category isn’t grounded in any specific type of racing. If you’re interested in meeting up with friends at the local trailhead and riding a mixture of climbs and descents, then this is the style for you. Bikes in this category place equal emphasis on fun, efficiency and sensible overall weight.

Cross-country: This style of riding typically implies riding fast, with an emphasis on climbing prowess. Distances vary from just a few miles to 25-plus, and bikes tend to focus on light weight and efficiency. These bikes can be great if you’re considering getting competitive or would like a racier ride for your local trails.

All-mountain/enduro: Think of all-mountain/enduro riding as trail riding on steroids, with bigger leg-burning climbs, longer white-knuckle descents and more technical features—both man-made and natural. Bikes for all-mountain/enduro riding are designed to perform well on steep descents while also being light and nimble enough to pedal uphill.

The term enduro comes from the racing world and describes a competition that has timed downhill stages and untimed uphill stages. The winner is whoever has the fastest combined time on the downhills. Enduro riding has become very popular, and the term is now often used interchangeably with all-mountain regardless of whether you’re racing or not.

Downhill/park: This type of riding is mostly done at lift-serviced bike parks (often during a ski resort’s warmer months). You ride big, tough bikes and wear full-face helmets and body armor. The bikes boast more durable components and fewer gears, and the suspension has more travel (the amount of movement in the suspension). All of this helps you conquer jumps, berms, rock gardens and wooden ladders. Given that you’re on a perpetual descent the entire time, you don’t have to pedal much, but you still get a serious workout because you’re constantly reacting to the fast-approaching terrain.

Fat-tire biking: Picture the kind of bike you always wanted as a kid: one with giant tires that can roll through just about anything. Fat-tire bikes are bikes with tires that are at least 3.7 in. wide (and may be as wide as 5 in. or more). They offer excellent traction through snow and sand. Fat-tire biking is not limited to these conditions and has proven to be a fast-growing addition to all-season trail riding. Fat-tire bikes can be a great choice for beginner mountain bikers because they are very forgiving on rough terrain.

Types of Mountain Bikes

What type of bike you ride is usually decided by where you plan on riding. Suspension type and wheel diameter are two key features that determine what type of terrain the bike is capable of riding. You have a wealth of options when it comes to types of suspension and wheel diameter (denoted by such terms as 26, 27.5 (650b), and 29ers).

Suspension Type

Rigid: While not the most common type of mountain bike, “rigid” mountain bikes don’t feature any suspension. They are easy to maintain and usually less expensive, but most riders prefer bikes with suspension for greater comfort. Most fat-tire bikes are rigid, and riders find that the wide tires and low tire pressure provide all the squish needed to absorb bumps in the trail.

Hardtail: These bikes have a suspension fork in the front to help absorb impact on the front wheel, but the rear of the bike has no suspension—ergo a hardtail. Hardtails are typically less expensive than full-suspension bikes, and have fewer moving parts (which often translates into less maintenance). Most hardtails have the ability to lock out the front fork for times where a fully rigid bike is desired.

Cross-country riders typically gravitate toward hardtails as they allow more direct transfer of power between the pedal stroke and the rear tire. Hardtails can also be at home on all-mountain trails, and the lower cost and easier maintenance make them a solid option for everything except serious lift-serviced downhill trails.

Full suspension: There are many variations of full-suspension bikes, but the general idea is for the front fork and rear shock to absorb the impacts of the trail. This drastically reduces the impact on the rider, increases traction, and makes for a more forgiving and enjoyable ride.

A full-suspension bike can soak up a lot of a trail bumps and chatter, but the bike can also “bob” a bit and you lose some of the energy transfer when climbing uphill. As a result, most full-suspension rigs have the ability to lock-out the rear suspension to offer better power transfer and more efficient climbing.

Bikes designed for downhill riding typically boast a lot of travel—the amount of movement in the suspension—compared to bikes designed for cross-country and all-mountain riding. As much as eight inches of travel front and rear is fairly common.

Wheel Size

26 in.: In the not too-distant past, all mountain bikes were equipped with 26 in. wheels. It is still a popular wheel size for its responsiveness and maneuverability, but now when you walk into a bike shop and inquire about mountain bikes, you are likely to be asked, “26 in., 27.5 in. or 29 in.?”

27.5 in. (650b): Offering a middle ground between standard 26 in. wheels and 29ers, these bikes apply a “best of both worlds” solution, more easily rolling over terrain than the 26s, but more maneuverable than 29ers. As with 29ers, this wheel size can be found on both full-suspension and hardtail rigs.

29ers: These bikes feature 29 in. wheels that are typically heavier and a little slower to accelerate, but once you start moving you can conquer considerably more terrain easier than on a bike with standard 26 in. wheels. They generally offer excellent grip and they have a higher “attack angle”—meaning the wheel rolls over trail obstacles easier. These bikes have become extremely popular for the cross-country crowd. 29ers can be found in both hardtail and full-suspension rigs.

24 in.: Kids’ mountain bikes typically have 24 in. wheels to accommodate the shorter legs of children. Most are less-expensive versions of adult bikes with simpler components. Generally speaking, these suit kids ages 10 to 13, but this depends more on the size of the child than the age. Younger/smaller children can get started biking with 20 in. wheels.

How to Dress for Mountain Biking

Bike-specific clothing makes for a more comfortable ride, no matter what style of biking you're doing. That said, different styles of mountain biking will dictate what type of clothing you'll choose.

Shorts: Options for mountain biking shorts range from form-fitting styles (often worn by cross-country racers) to baggy styles with a more casual look and more coverage and durability for snags along the trail. These generally have an inner lining with a padded chamois that helps reduce saddle fatigue and reduces some of the trail impact.

Jersey: Similar to shorts, jerseys range from form-fitting to loose and more casual-looking. Regardless of fit, you still want to choose something that wicks sweat and dries quickly. You’ll also want something you can wash and dry with little fuss. If you plan to carry a backpack, you won’t need a lot of pockets—although some mountain-bike jerseys offer that option.

Gloves: You’ll be surprised how much a good pair of gloves reduces hand and wrist fatigue; get a pair with padding at the palm. Full-fingered gloves keep your hands warmer and provide some texture between your fingers and the grip on the brakes and gear shifters. Both fingerless and full-fingered gloves add protection in the event of a crash.

9/29/2019: Paragon Power!

This here is an incomplete list of Paragon "cans and can'ts". Aside from more math, I also need to consider weaknesses and limits - even if they solely come from Alex, kinda - and any additional abilities I feel are appropriate.

The Paragon's AI (VI?) is, despite its age, still way ahead of (most) computer-based technology known to man: the Paragon can access our internet and surf it at speeds I am not ready to calculate, accessing information as if it were a well-memorized thought. It's cyberwarfare capabilities make it inaccessible to current human means while wholly capable of accessing human computers, it's rate of passing through security systems depends on the defenses set-up, but largely nothing gets in Its way.

-- Most impressive of all, in my opinion, is that the Paragon is linked to Its person by conscious and unconscious thought; by detecting his brainwaves and emitting appropriate waves of Its own, The Paragon can communicate with Alex vocally and telepathically, though most often Alex speaks vocally. Meanwhile, his body and the Paragon move as one, and not just in a way that clothes do; the unconscious-connection refers to the Paragon having an instantaneous reading of Alex's intended movements so that Alex can utilize all of the Paragon's capabilities as if it were he himself doing it (which ought to come up sometimes when Alex isn't in the Paragon, like an astronaut recently back on earth).

The manufacturers of our Paragon, the Alliance, made an ethical decision to exclude straight-forward telepathy from the models of the time as post-war foresight considered the abuse such surveillance could achieve.

This is not to say that current models may or may not have this telepathy, and even at the time of our Paragon's construction, mind-reading and anti- technology had been in use by other Alliance and non-Alliance races, like the Tabaan, who have incorporated it into their incredibly rare encounters with humans, inducing memory erasures (though often repairable, the memories are just fragments), missing time, and projecting false identities (such as the Nordic and Reptilian races). As such, the Alliance did make sure to secure the bearer within from telepathic assault by making the Paragons externally unreachable by mind; nothing gets in, nothing gets out.

Alex's newfound strength, however, is not his primary asset, and his Tractor ability is to ensure safety for others and himself.

-- Just what his Newtonic strength (?) exactly, I'm not yet sure...

- Super Speed: While I don't want Alex to outshine teammate and friend Ethan Pursche, the Paragon IS fast; I believe I once had It reaching mach 3 at Its fastest, but this may indeed be too fast...if this is anything to go off of, I absolutely want Alex to be able to a full-blown JoJo style attack rush, and summing up research done by others online, Star Platinum (the go-to Stand for any comparisons here) was punching faster than lightning, which moves at 230,000,000mph....THAT is INSANE...

So as it is with strength, Speed, too, needs more time to understand.

- Flight:...He do that...but seriously, I'm still trying to determine if his flight speed would be different than his..."tactical speed", and if the Paragon's battery/power source would have anything to do with that. I do see Alex racing jets, though, if at least just up to mach 1...

- "Tractor" capabilities: His go-to ability, the Paragon allows Alex to seize, repell, and attract people and objects to him with a "Tractor Beam" (in the same way UFO reportees claim to have been caught by alien crafts). It takes more power to completely immobilize a moving subject, this is visible with a very bright, blueish light; the more "juice", the more color there is. I once put a strength limit on this with a max of 150,000 tons, but I think that will only be if the Paragon is at max power and the object isn't resisting; the greater the size and resistance, the harder it is for Alex/the Paragon to hold. As well, the Tractor is used to create shields, and whatever/whoever is within a "Tractor sphere" - as is the shape the beam takes when in open space and once its subject is fully-enveloped, with an inner space between its "walls" and the subject being an equal distance all around the subject within the sphere equivalent to half the subject's total measurements of height and width.

- Hologram Projection: Not so much an "ability" as it is a function; the Paragon can project 3D models for investigative and confrontational purposes, though these cannot interact with their physical enviornment on their own, so if Alex wantrd to make a duplicate of himself pick up an apple, he'd have to also use his Tractor ability.

- "Invisibility": In actuality it's akin to what the Predator uses for stealth and functions well with the Hologram Projection as a distraction is perhaps the greatest form of invisibility since most beings don't have eyes on the back of their heads.

- Plasma Generation: While the Paragon's were made with an emphasis on peace-keeping and aiding those in need, our Paragon was designed during a time of war and thus comes with the additional ability to generate visible and variable-intense plasma when the need arises. Primarily coming from the visor, the Paragon can also emit from Its hands and feet, though from the visor It can emit a large, draining red beam of great force and heat.

At the behest of the Paragon, Alex does not use this unless absolutely necessary.

...All of this, and still, the whole suit only adds about 20 pounds to Alex's 150 lbs mass.

They heard heavy breathing in the distance, Patton immediately perking up and looking through the trees, trying to find the source of the noise. “Virgil! Kiddo! Is that you?!” he called out, desperately hoping for a reply. The others followed suit, yelling until their lungs were about to burst and their vocal chords felt like they could tear in half. It was the middle of the night, Logan having lost his glasses, and Patton not being able to see through his tears, Roman was leading the group, being the eyes for both of them. Luckily, those eyes had 20/20 vision, because he suddenly stopped the group in favor of staring at the ground.

“What is it? Why did you stop?” Logan’s confused tone echoed through the empty park. “There’s-there’s footprints. I think” He crouched down, and tried to feel for a break in the dirt, or whatever was causing the dark ovular shape on the path. His fingers felt liquid. He hoped and prayed that it was just water. That he had just stuck his hand in a small puddle. But it was sticky, and warm, and half congealed. Water doesn’t usually congeal.

Three hours earlier

Pride was almost over. It was 8:00 pm sharp, and the boys were about ready to head home. Roman wanted to stay out all night drinking and celebrating...well, himself. However, Logan deemed it unwise, Virgil deemed it unsafe, and Patton was practically falling asleep where he stood. He had been up all night baking rainbow cakes, and pancakes, and cupcakes, and virtually any other thing with the word “cake” in it. After much persuasion, Roman conceded and they started to get back in the car, Roman in shotgun, Logan driving, Virgil and Patton in the backseat.

“Virgil, are you showing Patton more of that PG-13 music again?” Roman loved to tease Virgil for his music tastes, as if listening to Broadway and Disney 24/7 was normal. “No,” Virgil sneered, “Patton’s pretty much out cold.” Logan began to pull out of his parking space, leaving the festivities behind. “Well that’s good. A proper sleeping schedule is im-” He was cut off by a strange, almost explosion-like sound from far away. “What was that?!” Virgil’s eyes immediately went wide in fear. “Probably just fireworks.” Roman explained it away. “People set them off all the time, it’s fine.”

“Yeah.” Logan agreed. “Fireworks.” Patton had been woken up by the sound and Virgil was trying to console him, even though he himself was obviously in a state of panic. He was trying to do his breathing exercises and was furiously pulling his sleeve zipper up and down. It was noticeable that Logan was driving just slightly above the speed limit, which he had never done, and vowed never to do. The sound came again, but louder, ergo closer this time. The car in front of them crashed.

“Pa-.” Patton heard from what sounded like just a few yards way. Immediately, he started sprinting towards the noise, leaving the other two behind. They ran after him, but halted at the scene before them. Patton was on his knees, leaning over a bleeding Virgil who was breathing much too heavily. Patton looked down at him, sobbing and trying to put pressure on the wound. Virgil grabbed his wrist and made eye contact. He started singing, soft and high, which was unusual seeing as he was always so self conscious about his voice.

“I did exactly as you said, pa. I held my head up high.” Patton recognized the melody and sang the accompanying part. “I know, I know. You did everything just right.” He sniffled. “But now isn’t the time for Hamilton.” Virgil chuckled, and winced at the discomfort in his torso, “Nah,” he whispered, shaking his head. “More like Guns N’ Roses.” He lifted both their hands and peeked at the bloody bullet wound.

Three hours earlier

Logan swerved onto the sidewalk, almost crashing the car into a tree, but narrowly avoiding the accident in front of them. They all hopped out of the car to see what was going on. That noise, which had been confirmed to be a gunshot, kept repeating. People were screaming, police sirens were wailing, and the four held onto each other tightly, Patton now fully awake and praying that his friends would be safe, swearing to himself to take a bullet for them if need be. The other three were doing the same.

“Okay. Um, everyone back in the car. We need to leave, now.” Logan opened Roman’s door and went around to his side. Patton took Virgil by the shoulders and looked him in the eye. “I need you to try to stay calm, alright? I know it’s scary; I’m scared too. But you need to hold your head up high and get through this, okay?” Virgil nodded, the rest of him convulsing in fear. “Patton, we need to go now! Get in the-”

A bullet just narrowly missed Roman, nestling itself into the hood of the car. Virgil spooked at the loud noise and danger, immediately bolting in the opposite direction, into a thickly wooded park. Patton screamed his name and ran after him; Logan tried to get out of the car, only to trip in his frantic haze and fall face forward, smashing his glasses and causing his nose to bleed. Roman picked him up and started running with him towards Patton, who was a few yards ahead of them, Virgil just a speck in the distance.

Logan covered his mouth, understanding what was going on even though he couldn’t see it. Roman started crying rageful tears, kicking the bushes and trees. “Who? Who did it? Virgil, did you see?!” He yelled into the otherwise vacant woods. “No. He ran past me. Some skinhead with shitty tattoos.” Patton continued to try to comfort him. “Shh, shh. Okay, it’s okay, kiddo. Just keep breathing, And stay awake. You’re gonna be okay.” He took Virgil into his arms, sitting them upright, and getting blood on his clothes and hands. “Liar liar” Virgil started, in between coughs, “pants on fire, Popstar.”

Roman knelt down next to them and pet Virgil’s hair. “Hold on, hot topic. Just for a little longer. Logan’s calling 911, just stay with us for a little longer. Hold on.” The wounded man smiled. “Aww, you think i’m hot.” Roman smiled back and continued to comfort him. Logan kneeled, trying to pry Virgil from Patton as to see the wound better. “Patton, we need to put pressure on the wound. I need you to let go so I can help.” Patton laid Virgil down on the ground and Logan winced at the state of just Virgil’s shirt, let alone his bare abdomen. Even though it was blurry, he could tell the copious amount of blood was mixed with sand and dirt. He borrowed Patton’s glasses and assessed the situation.

“Roman, you have a water bottle, right? Or alcohol of some sort? There’s dirt everywhere, and it’s just going to make this worse.” Roman nodded, getting his water bottle and handing it to Logan, who then lifted Virgil’s shirt to see the mess of dirt, sweat, and blood cluttering a gaping bullet wound. “I am by no means a doctor,” Logan began, “but I’m trying to go on common sense here, along with what medical knowledge I may have. And I would suppose that making sure the wound is clean and putting pressure on it would be two very high priorities.” He poured the water over Virgil’s torso, and watched as the muscles squirmed underneath the skin in pain, dirt, sweat, and dried blood giving way to pale skin and fresh, liquid crimson pouring from the lesion.

“Who has a cloth? Preferably a steril one.” Patton pulled his rainbow beach towel from his tote bag, almost dropping it. “How about this?” Logan nodded, and held out his hand. Patton tossed it with perfect accuracy, and Logan put it on Virgil, pressing down hard. “Just try to breath, Virgil. The ambulance will be here in ten minutes. Deep breaths, please try to regulate your respiratory system.”

Three hours earlier

The three of them had made it into the small patch of forest, Logan refusing to use his flashlight to conserve battery so they could call someone, and desperately looking for Virgil in the dark. Logan couldn’t see that well and was having to breathe through his mouth, Patton was stumbling over every other root and stone, and Roman was trying to apply what he and Logan remembered from being boy scouts together, seeing if they could maybe track Virgil, even in the dark.

To their mutual horror and heartbreak, another gunshot ripped through the air. It came from the forest this time instead of the road. A familiar “Agh” and accompanying groan fell on the group’s ears.“Virgil!” Patton screamed, tripping his way along the crude path towards the sound.

Meanwhile, Virgil had doubled over in pain at the same spot, now on his knees, crawling in the dark and clutching his side, searching for safety. The adrenaline was still running on high, pumping through his body at an alarming rate, dulling the pain and distracting him from his friends, who he heard shouting in the distance. Eventually, he just slumped up against a tree in a patch of dirt, looking at his blood stained shirt. One of his hands was caked in moist black dirt, and he could see the blood he had left behind where grass and dirt met manufactured sand pathway. As the adrenaline rush dulled, the pain increased, and he groaned, pressing down with both hands at the splitting pain.

Virgil was having water bottles pressed to his mouth, forcing him to take in as many fluids as possible. His shirt had been taken off and discarded, and Patton was behind him, holding him and crying. Just six minutes till the ambulance came. His friends were gathered around him, as if they were gathering around his corpse. He had a foreboding feeling, and for whatever reason, this vague emotion set his body and mind back into a state of panic. Death had the vantage point right now, and Virgil started hyperventilating at the thought.

“Vir-Virgil. Calm down. Regulate your breathing, deep and slow. In for four, hold of seven, out for eight. Patton, please help him calm down.” Patton looked down at Virgil, holding his hand and trying his best to smile and be calming. “Virgil, we need you to breathe. What would help you breathe? Do you want me to sing, like after you have nightmares?” The panic-stricken man nodded, trying to slow his breathing the best he could, squeezing Patton’s hand, holding on for, literally, dear life.

“Yes? Yes. Okay, I can sing for you. I can do that.” Patton took a deep breath, then started pouring out a soft, sweet melody. “He’s got a smile, it seems to me. Reminds me of childhood” he choked up “memories. Where everything. Was as fresh as the bright blue sky. Now and then when I see his face. He takes me away to that special place. And if I’d stare too long I’d probably break down and cry. Oh, oh, oh, sweet child o’ mine.” He paused and looked down, almost smiling, to see that Virgil’s eyes were closed, and Patton realized that he was no longer squeezing his hand. His face fell.

“Virgil?” he patted the younger man’s cheek. “Virgil get up, you have to stay awake, remember? Remember you need to be awake until the ambulance gets here. Remember? Virgil?” Logan took one of his arms, and put two fingers against his wrist, then against his neck. Looking at Patton, he let one single tear roll down his cheek, and just stared at his friend. Patton rushed his ear to Virgil’s chest. What followed was the loudest silence to ever pierce his eardrum.

He stopped breathing. He couldn’t breathe. He just looked into the distance, held Virgil tight in his arms, petting his hair, and rocking them both back and forth, singing all the while. “Oh, oh, oh, sweet child o’ mine.” He repeated the same phrase over and over again. “Oh, oh, oh, sweet child o’ mine.” Sirens sounded in the distance, and they could see flashing lights in their peripheral. “Oh, oh, oh, sweet child o’ mine.” Logan checked his watch. 11:24. The ambulance had taken eleven minutes to arrive.

“Oh, oh, oh, sweet child o’ mine.”

You can customize a motorcycle in one of two ways: all at once or in phases.

I chose the latter.

After purchasing a new Softail Low Rider, it’s safe to say that I’m a little slim in the pockets. With that in mind, I decided to take a methodical approach to modifying my new rig.

I needed to prioritize my new additions and upgrades and I came up with the following model:

First and foremost, I needed a sissy bar.

On that note, I made sure my first purchase was a custom Edward Richie sissy bar. Last June I purchased a helmet and jacket rack from Ed and I was blown away by the quality of the piece.

So once I required a new sissy bar, I knew the perfect person to contact. Because the revamped Softail platform is so new, there aren’t many aftermarket options available, but Ed handmakes each sissy bar to order. After quickly measuring the width of my rear fender and the distance between my strut bolts (center to center).

Armed with the measurement, I direct messaged Ed and kicked off the purchasing process. Two replies later, I was entering my credit card info and Ed was already getting started on the sissy bar.

He gave me an initial ETA of 2 weeks (pretty fast for a custom piece), so I was surprised when the product landed on my doorstep in half the time.

Installation was a breeze. Using a ts-40 bit, I extracted the rear strut bolts (secured by a removable bracket), slid the sissy bar between the fender & strut, and resecured the bolts. I’d be overestimating if I said it took me half an hour.

So what do I think of the product? It’s perfect. Ergonomically, the thick gauge of the steel is more than enough support for Michelle and/or luggage. Aesthetically, it’s the ideal height and meets the rear tip of my saddle.

I will definitely continue to purchase pieces from Edward Richie, especially because it’s a high-quality, American made product at competitive prices. This sissy bar blows any mass-manufactured version out of the water!

Next up, the handlebars...

I was never a fan of buckhorn bars. They swoop back toward the rider and the rise is low, leaving your hands resting at the perfect height for a walker. They feel like you’re wrestling with the steering wheel of a fire truck. They have a certain “Dad”-ness to them.

So I decided to update the look of the handlebars. I wanted something with the rise of a t-bar, but with a classic chopper aesthetic. Actually, that’s the theme of the entire bike, Modern-day (Club Style) performance, with old school (Chopper) design. The LA Choppers Miter handlebars fit the bill perfectly.

The 10″ rise lifts my arms up to shoulder level and brings my fist out in front of me, instead of at my sides. With my hands in this position, my elbows aren’t bowed. I’m able to dive into corners easier. I’m able to split through traffic more smoothly. I’m able to ride the way I’m used to riding. That additional height also allows the viewer's eye to draw a line from the bars to the tank console and all the way down to the rear axle. It’s modern-day performance with old school lines.

However, it’s important to note that handlebar swaps are not for the meek. It’s a trying process that will make you question your skills, grit, and sanity. Anything requiring wire and electrical work warrants a slow pace and a meticulous attention to detail. Make sure you’re armed with both before you pick out that next pair of bars for your bike.

Now that Michelle isn’t sliding off the back, now that I don’t have to do the Twist for every turn, now that we’re comfortable on the bike, it’s time to focus on the performance!
