Save Me: Chapter 28 - Look Death in the Face

This was it. For both leaders, it was finally time to look death in the face and accept it. For most, this was the physical death of their enemy, whereas for Molly, this meant the emotional death of her loved one in her heart and her former self.

Rick and I led them across the field and towards the Sanctuary which we could now see in the distance.

Everyone was focussed and determined, no fear now just pure hatred, except me.

As we all moved stealthily as one we were halted by a loud blood curdling whistle.

It was them.

The noise surrounded us as it felt like it came from all directions.

I looked at Rick and Maggie who were turning around frantically trying to find out where the noise came from.

My heart felt like it was pounding in my mouth as my breathing became more rapid.

I squinted to try and see any Saviours over the hill, there were none yet that haunting sound ensued.

All of a sudden a voice on a megaphone tauntingly shouted 'well shit Rick! Would you look at that? I just ambushed your ambush with an even bigger ambush!'.

Shit it was Negan. He sounded vengeful, almost dark.

I pictured his eyes which wouldn't be that light shade of amber anymore.

He wanted us all dead, I knew that now.

Rick was getting pissed off now.

'How about you step out and face us?' he shouted.

We heard a loud chuckle then Negan said 'Oh Rick I am everywhere! Pick a direction to run, see how you do. Make it fun for all of us!'.

We couldn't escape even if we wanted to, Rick would never let this go.

'Guess what else I did...I brought some of your old friends' he said confidently.

If my ears could prick up, they would have now.

I knew he meant Eugene but the only other would have been Gabriel, but we all thought he had escaped.

'You remember your old buddy Eugene? Well, he is the one that made today possible. Same goes for Dwighty-boy here' Negan shouted.

I looked at Rosita who was scowling now at Eugene's betrayal.

I just hoped he would do the right thing, everything was riding on that.

He knew about Dwight's helping us.

Even though I never forgave him for Denise, neither would Tara, I still couldn't let him die.

I readied my gun when Negan said 'In case you were wondering, he didn't ream you on purpose. No, he's just a gutless fucker that sucks at life and now he gets to stand up here and watch you all die, he has to live with that'.

At this the Saviours stepped forward and formed a line in front of us so that they just peaked over the hill.

'Gabriel, well he's gotta go too. We are cleaning house today Rick' Negan added.

I looked through my binoculars to see Negan holding a gun up to Gabriel's head and Dwight standing beside them, wearing a prisoner uniform.

I scanned for Simon frantically, wanting to take a shot at him first, but he wasn't there.

At all.

Negan was there to show his full force and would've brought his right hand man, unless he was dead.

I smirked vengefully just thinking about it.

'And then there's you. It never had to be a fight, you just had to accept how things were. So here we go, congratulations Rick! This is all on you, you can blame yourself for Molly now as well' Negan said almost with a twinge of sadness in his voice.

Why would Rick blame himself for me?

I shot him a confused look, until the realisation hit me.

He had told him I was dead. What if Negan's anger towards 'mourning' me was gonna get us all killed.

Rick just looked at Negan, avoiding my gaze.

'Goddamn it Rick!' I whispered to him, even Michonne shot him a look of disappointment.

'Three, two, one...' Negan counted down until we heard a loud bang and Saviours dropping like flies.

He had done it! I smirked as I looked at Eugene.

'Now!' Rick shouted as we ran towards them.

Negan's gun had backfired and a casing had torn through his right hand.

'Eugene!' he yelled in pain.

Gabriel punched him in the face as Dwight tried to wrestle him against the bonnet of his car.

Negan managed to push him off with Lucille and ran towards the woods.

'He's running!' Maggie shouted as Rick went after him.

'Keep going! To the rendezvous point, the others should already be there' I shouted to everyone else as we gained on the Saviours who were falling to their knees.

'Don't shoot! Please. We're done. It's over' Laura said as they all put their hands up and surrendered their weapons.

I nodded to her, she had been kind to me at the Sanctuary and after all Rick only wanted Negan dead.

Once they had surrendered, I ran after Rick.

My heart pounding out of my chest and my breathing becoming more irregular when I saw Rick and Negan by a tree with stained glass hanging off its branches.

Negan's POV//

Rick came rushing around the tree as I knocked him to the ground with Lucille.

'Just so you know, the eeny meeny miny moe, that was bullshit. I made a choice, I just didn't wanna kill kid's dad right in front of him. Turns out, that would've been the best thing I could've done. Had I done it, that kid might've still been alive' I taunted.

At this Rick kicked my legs, knocking me off my feet as I fell on my back.

'You're beat. Your people are down' Rick said breathlessly.

I groaned as I stood up slowly, saying 'I'll get out of it, I always do'.

'It's just you and me Rick. You, you are torn open. I am bigger, I am badder  and I got a bat' I said smirking at him lying there on the grass.

Like hell I was gonna die.

'We can have...a future' Rick said, his voice straining on every word as he winced in pain.

I smiled, saying 'I know I will'.

He tried to stand up and pleaded, 'just give me ten seconds. I can tell you how'.

I scowled at him, thinking about Molly and how she might be dead because of both of us.

'No' I answered.

'Please just give me ten seconds for Carl' he begged, now standing.

I paused and nodded.

Now I started counting, 'ten...nine'.

'Carl said, it doesn't have to be...be a fight anymore' he said struggling to speak.

I held Lucille up and scowled saying 'he was wrong, eight...'.

Rick panted and said 'no, no he was right'.

My scowl hardened at his pleading for his life until I saw her.

Molly was standing there, behind Rick.

Tears fell down my face as I looked at her.

'M-Mol...' was all I managed as suddenly Rick ninja sliced open my jugular with a piece of glass he found on the grass.

I dropped to my knees, my gaze still firmly on hers.

I knew I would die and I wanted her to be the last thing I saw.

She gasped and covered her mouth as she lunged forward, Michonne stopping her from reaching me.

The others stood beside her, including the widow.

Rick waited for a minute and walked towards them, blood gushing from my neck as I tried to stop it with my hand.

'Save him' Rick said to some doctor.

Those words rang in my ears as I saw Molly's look of relief and the widow screaming 'No!'.

I wasn't relieved when I heard Rick's words.

I wanted to die, after what I did and who I hurt the most, I couldn't face her.

'No! He can't...he killed Glenn!' the widow shouted as Michonne held her back.

I was fading in and out of consciousness when I felt someone stitch up my neck and cover it with a bandage.

'We have to!' Rick shouted to her as she yelled 'we have to end it! Rick! We have to make it right. It's not over till he's dead!'.

When I stopped bleeding I saw Molly looking down now.

She was happy I was alive, but I knew that changed nothing between us.

I really felt like dying now.

'There's gotta be something after' Rick said to the widow as he now addressed my men.

They still had their hands up, they had surrendered.

'Everyone put your hands down, you're all gonna go home now' Rick shouted as they put their hands down slowly.

'Negan's alive. But his way of doing things is over! Anyone who can't live with that will pay the price, I promise you that. Any person here who would live in peace and fairness, who would find common ground, this world is yours by right' he shouted.

'We are life, that's death! It's coming for us, unless we stand together' he shouted pointing at the distant hoard of walkers.

'Go home, then the work begins. The new world begins. All this, all this is just what was. There's gotta be something after!' Rick yelled as some guys lifted me onto a stretcher and put me in the back of a van.

The fuckers were gonna take me to Alexandria, I knew it.

Molly's POV//

It was a curious feeling, the man I loved was alive and yet dead at the same time.

Tears flowed down my face as I watched them take him away.

I never wanted him dead, but seeing how much his presence affected my family made me feel even worse.

Michonne and I held Maggie as she curled up on the grass and sobbed for Glenn's memory.

I understood Rick and I agreed with him, but seeing Maggie like that broke my heart into a million tiny pieces.

Rosita stood next to us with Eugene who had now returned to us.

'What happened to the guns? That you?' she asked him.

Eugene turned to me as I stroked Maggie's hair and nodded.

'Us. We introduced the sabotage aspect to the manufacturing process unbeknownst to my colleagues which was inspired by Molly's purposeful determination and resilience. Plus a few things you imparted on me before I left. Ergo I created a modicum of phooey for kablooie' he said seriously.

Rosita smiled and turned to me and nodded a 'thank you'.

I smiled back, there was a change in the air after that.

I practically felt people warm to me again.

As I looked around, I saw Gabriel and Eugene but not Dwight.

A rush of panic washed over me as I couldn't see him.

The Saviours were now leaving but I saw Laura and I ran over to her to ask her what happened to him.

She smiled weakly and said that he had left but left a note in one of the cars.

I nodded a thank you and ran back to where the Saviour's cars were.

I checked each one before seeing a small folded piece of white paper stuck to the windscreen of presumably Negan's car.

I looked around me to check no one was there and opened it slowly, it read:

I always knew you'd make it, thats just the type of person you are.

A while after you escaped, I helped Sherry get away too. I'm not sure where she is but I promise to always keep looking for her. I'm not coming back.

I don't know whether Negan will be dead by the time you read this, but if he isn't, be careful.

I folded it back up and sighed, the guy had practically predicted it.

Negan was like a cat with nine lives.

Just as I was about to walk back, I saw Negan's red scarf on the front seat in the car.

I hesitated but then grabbed a rock and smashed the window so I could grab it.

I held it between my fingers and pressed it against my cheek.

His smell was all over it and it reminded me of our time together.

I didn't know whether I would ever give it back to him, but I couldn't leave it there.

I stuffed it into my jacket pocket, along with Dwight's letter and set off after my family.

Types of Mountain Bike Terrain

Downhill/park: This type of riding is mostly done at lift-serviced bike parks (often during a ski resort’s warmer months). You ride big, tough bikes and wear full-face helmets and body armor. The bikes boast more durable components and fewer gears, and the suspension has more travel (the amount of movement in the suspension). All of this helps you conquer jumps, berms, rock gardens and wooden ladders. Given that you’re on a perpetual descent the entire time, you don’t have to pedal much, but you still get a serious workout because you’re constantly reacting to the fast-approaching terrain.

Fat-tire biking: Picture the kind of bike you always wanted as a kid: one with giant tires that can roll through just about anything. Fat-tire bikes are bikes with tires that are at least 3.7 in. wide (and may be as wide as 5 in. or more). They offer excellent traction through snow and sand. Fat-tire biking is not limited to these conditions and has proven to be a fast-growing addition to all-season trail riding. Fat-tire bikes can be a great choice for beginner mountain bikers because they are very forgiving on rough terrain.

Types of Mountain Bikes

What type of bike you ride is usually decided by where you plan on riding. Suspension type and wheel diameter are two key features that determine what type of terrain the bike is capable of riding. You have a wealth of options when it comes to types of suspension and wheel diameter (denoted by such terms as 26, 27.5 (650b), and 29ers).

Suspension Type

Rigid: While not the most common type of mountain bike, “rigid” mountain bikes don’t feature any suspension. Hardtails can also be at home on all-mountain trails, and the lower cost and easier maintenance make them a solid option for everything except serious lift-serviced downhill trails.

Full suspension: There are many variations of full-suspension bikes, but the general idea is for the front fork and rear shock to absorb the impacts of the trail. This drastically reduces the impact on the rider, increases traction, and makes for a more forgiving and enjoyable ride.

A full-suspension bike can soak up a lot of a trail bumps and chatter, but the bike can also “bob” a bit and you lose some of the energy transfer when climbing uphill. As a result, most full-suspension rigs have the ability to lock-out the rear suspension to offer better power transfer and more efficient climbing.

Bikes designed for downhill riding typically boast a lot of travel—the amount of movement in the suspension—compared to bikes designed for cross-country and all-mountain riding. As much as eight inches of travel front and rear is fairly common.

Wheel Size

26 in.: In the not too-distant past, all mountain bikes were equipped with 26 in. wheels. It is still a popular wheel size for its responsiveness and maneuverability, but now when you walk into a bike shop and inquire about mountain bikes, you are likely to be asked, “26 in., 27.5 in. or 29 in.?”

27.5 in. (650b): Offering a middle ground between standard 26 in. wheels and 29ers, these bikes apply a “best of both worlds” solution, more easily rolling over terrain than the 26s, but more maneuverable than 29ers. As with 29ers, this wheel size can be found on both full-suspension and hardtail rigs.

29ers: These bikes feature 29 in. wheels that are typically heavier and a little slower to accelerate, but once you start moving you can conquer considerably more terrain easier than on a bike with standard 26 in. wheels. They generally offer excellent grip and they have a higher “attack angle”—meaning the wheel rolls over trail obstacles easier. These bikes have become extremely popular for the cross-country crowd. 29ers can be found in both hardtail and full-suspension rigs.

The manufacturers of our Paragon, the Alliance, made an ethical decision to exclude straight-forward telepathy from the models of the time as post-war foresight considered the abuse such surveillance could achieve.

- Super Speed: While I don't want Alex to outshine teammate and friend Ethan Pursche, the Paragon IS fast; I believe I once had It reaching mach 3 at Its fastest, but this may indeed be too fast...if this is anything to go off of, I absolutely want Alex to be able to a full-blown JoJo style attack rush, and summing up research done by others online, Star Platinum (the go-to Stand for any comparisons here) was punching faster than lightning, which moves at 230,000,000mph....THAT is INSANE...

So as it is with strength, Speed, too, needs more time to understand.

- Flight:...He do that...but seriously, I'm still trying to determine if his flight speed would be different than his..."tactical speed", and if the Paragon's battery/power source would have anything to do with that. I do see Alex racing jets, though, if at least just up to mach 1...

- "Tractor" capabilities: His go-to ability, the Paragon allows Alex to seize, repell, and attract people and objects to him with a "Tractor Beam" (in the same way UFO reportees claim to have been caught by alien crafts). It takes more power to completely immobilize a moving subject, this is visible with a very bright, blueish light; the more "juice", the more color there is. I once put a strength limit on this with a max of 150,000 tons, but I think that will only be if the Paragon is at max power and the object isn't resisting; the greater the size and resistance, the harder it is for Alex/the Paragon to hold. As well, the Tractor is used to create shields, and whatever/whoever is within a "Tractor sphere" - as is the shape the beam takes when in open space and once its subject is  fully-enveloped, with an inner space between its "walls" and the subject being an equal distance all around the subject within the sphere equivalent to half the subject's total measurements of height and width.

- Hologram Projection: Not so much an "ability" as it is a function; the Paragon can project 3D models for investigative and confrontational purposes, though these cannot interact with their physical enviornment on their own, so if Alex wantrd to make a duplicate of himself pick up an apple, he'd have to also use his Tractor ability.

- "Invisibility": In actuality it's akin to what the Predator uses for stealth and functions well with the Hologram Projection as a distraction is perhaps the greatest form of invisibility since most beings don't have eyes on the back of their heads.

- Plasma Generation: While the Paragon's were made with an emphasis on peace-keeping and aiding those in need, our Paragon was designed during a time of war and thus comes with the additional ability to generate visible and variable-intense plasma when the need arises. Primarily coming from the visor, the Paragon can also emit from Its hands and feet, though from the visor It can emit a large, draining red beam of great force and heat.

At the behest of the Paragon, Alex does not use this unless absolutely necessary.

Plus then also: I have yet to find a single powerchair that's built to be able to withstand rain, so I have a special rain cover for my controller. A lot of manufacturers, especially at the lower, more theoretically affordable end, don't build towards daily, constant use.

Also: well yeah your front caster bearings collapse every few months, of course they do. Using it every single day??? On these pavements??? Who could countenance it.

I replace my batteries every year or two - that's £260 every time. They stop holding charge so well, and it becomes untenable for me to go to work and be sure I'll get home. We replace the bearings ourselves now because I can't keep paying £25 per time, added to losing my chair for a few days. Buying a bearing is less than £3 per bearing, and we have the tools required. Lots of people don't (and I can't generally do it myself cause it means lifting the front onto something to hold up the broken wheel, and being low to the ground).

some things most abled people don't get about wheelchairs are

1) if someone's using a wheelchair for most/all of the day, the wheelchair needs to be custom fit or it does terrible damage to your body

2) and that means they're expensive - like minimum £3k and up up upwards expensive (a custom fit powerchair can cost £20k) - mine has powered wheels and the chair and wheels together were £7.5k, and it took me a year to save up and sell stuff and fundraise to get it, and another year to raise the money for the powered wheels once I realised I couldn't push myself unaided

3) these kinds of wheelchairs are not mass produced - and being made to measure means you can have to wait up to a couple of months for a new chair to arrive (or for a repaired chair to come back)

4) and wheelchairs wear out - like cars or bikes or any form of transport that takes a hammering over time, eventually the frame or the axles or the electronics give out

so if you're dependent on your wheelchair to be able to go out or do anything at all, you have to be thinking ahead and somehow saving up for when your wheelchair needs repairing/replacing, or hoping for grants and fundraising to get you there come the time (a decreasing likelihood in these times of fucked economy when everyone's belts are tighter)

I'm partly mentioning all this because in some countries (like the US) if you're disabled and on state benefits, you can't have more than a certain amount of money saved up (an amount that wouldn't cover a new wheelchair) - but I'm partly writing this to help abled people understand what a financial trap we're in as wheelchair users, dependent on small companies who manufacture our chairs, needing to plan in advance to replace our chairs every few years, depending on how hard they get worked, and it's not like when you don't have a car but you can walk or get public transport - for most of us, without our wheelchair we can't function and may just be stuck in bed

it's very unusual these days to be able to get mobility aids paid for by the state even in countries that used to do this - here in the UK many doctors still haven't caught up with how impossible it is to get help from the NHS or the government towards our mobility now (as compared to just a few years ago), and doctors frown on us for getting hold of our own wheelchair, they can treat us like we'd bought pescription meds online, like if the wheelchair wasn't Officially Sanctioned then we obviously don't really need one and so on

I guess I'm wanting to say: be mindful of how important and hard-won our wheelchairs are, treat them and us with respect, and perhaps be prepared to help your wheelie friends find funds towards a new chair when the need arises please

Build Update - Ergonomics Phase

You can customize a motorcycle in one of two ways: all at once or in phases.

I chose the latter. 

After purchasing a new Softail Low Rider, it’s safe to say that I’m a little slim in the pockets. With that in mind, I decided to take a methodical approach to modifying my new rig. 

I needed to prioritize my new additions and upgrades and I came up with the following model:

Ergonomics: LA Choppers Miter Handlebars, Edward Richie Sissy Bar (passenger ergo)

Performance: Stage 1 - Two Brothers Racing Comp-S Exhaust, Two Brothers Juicebox, S&S Stealth Mini Tear Drop Air Cleaner

Cosmetics: Custom Dynamics Integrated Tail Light (eliminates rear turn signals), sandblast and clearcoat all tins & handlebars, vintage Harley-Davidson tank decal (see photo below)

First and foremost, I needed a sissy bar. 

With the 107 cu. in. motor launching us from every stop light, Michelle was having a hard time staying on the rear fender. She would cling to my back like a koala on a bamboo tree. That hunched over, nail-digging passenger position is fine for street riding, but one’s back can easily tire when you’re out on the open road. 

On that note, I made sure my first purchase was a custom Edward Richie sissy bar. Last June I purchased a helmet and jacket rack from Ed and I was blown away by the quality of the piece.

So once I required a new sissy bar, I knew the perfect person to contact. Because the revamped Softail platform is so new, there aren’t many aftermarket options available, but Ed handmakes each sissy bar to order. After quickly measuring the width of my rear fender and the distance between my strut bolts (center to center).

Armed with the measurement, I direct messaged Ed and kicked off the purchasing process. Two replies later, I was entering my credit card info and Ed was already getting started on the sissy bar. 

He gave me an initial ETA of 2 weeks (pretty fast for a custom piece), so I was surprised when the product landed on my doorstep in half the time.

Installation was a breeze. Using a ts-40 bit, I extracted the rear strut bolts (secured by a removable bracket), slid the sissy bar between the fender & strut, and resecured the bolts. I’d be overestimating if I said it took me half an hour.

So what do I think of the product? It’s perfect. Ergonomically, the thick gauge of the steel is more than enough support for Michelle and/or luggage. Aesthetically, it’s the ideal height and meets the rear tip of my saddle.

I will definitely continue to purchase pieces from Edward Richie, especially because it’s a high-quality, American made product at competitive prices. This sissy bar blows any mass-manufactured version out of the water!

Next up, the handlebars...

I was never a fan of buckhorn bars. They swoop back toward the rider and the rise is low, leaving your hands resting at the perfect height for a walker. They feel like you’re wrestling with the steering wheel of a fire truck. They have a certain “Dad”-ness to them. 

So I decided to update the look of the handlebars. I wanted something with the rise of a t-bar, but with a classic chopper aesthetic. Actually, that’s the theme of the entire bike, Modern-day (Club Style) performance, with old school (Chopper) design. The LA Choppers Miter handlebars fit the bill perfectly. 

The 10″ rise lifts my arms up to shoulder level and brings my fist out in front of me, instead of at my sides. With my hands in this position, my elbows aren’t bowed. I’m able to dive into corners easier. I’m able to split through traffic more smoothly. I’m able to ride the way I’m used to riding. That additional height also allows the viewer's eye to draw a line from the bars to the tank console and all the way down to the rear axle. It’s modern-day performance with old school lines.

However, it’s important to note that handlebar swaps are not for the meek. It’s a trying process that will make you question your skills, grit, and sanity. Anything requiring wire and electrical work warrants a slow pace and a meticulous attention to detail. Make sure you’re armed with both before you pick out that next pair of bars for your bike.

Now that Michelle isn’t sliding off the back, now that I don’t have to do the Twist for every turn, now that we’re comfortable on the bike, it’s time to focus on the performance!
