Ein paar kurze Gedanken zu Thiel und Boerne ...

In den vergangenen Tagen und vor allem als ich gestern nach längerer Zeit wieder einmal die Folge "Schwanensee" (ich mag die Folge, aber mir ist eher selten danach, sie zu gucken) geschaut habe, habe ich mir so ein bisschen meine Gedanken gemacht. Gedanken, die sich aus dem Fandom garantiert schon so einige im Laufe der Zeit gemacht haben, trotzdem muss ich jetzt auch nochmal ganz kurz meinen Senf dazu geben. ;-) Wenn Boerne und Thiel nicht Mann und Mann wären, sondern Frau und Mann, was würden die Zuschauer*innen DANN über die beiden denken? Wie käme z.B. dann die Szene in "Schwanensee" rüber, in der die beiden mit Wein und Co in Boernes Wohnung sitzen, Boerne nicht gleich die Akte raus rückt, und Thiel ziemlich breit grinst, als er sie ihm schließlich wegnimmt? Ich muss ja "gestehen", dass diese Szene so ein leichtes Kribbeln in mir auslöst. Und würde es sich um eine Szene zwischen Mann und Frau handeln, würde dann nicht wahrscheinlich ein Großteil der Zuschauer*innen denken: "Oha, da ist ETWAS zwischen den beiden" und vermutlich würde dieser Großteil auch denken/hoffen, dass sich da irgendwann mehr entwickelt? Gegensätzliche TV-Paare sind bei vielen beliebt, auch bei mir, ich liebe kaum etwas mehr, und verliebe mich in solche TV-Paare immer und immer wieder rettungslos. Und manchmal finde ich es schade. Dass es ein MEHR zwischen Thiel und Boerne (mit allergrößter Wahrscheinlichkeit) niemals geben wird. Ich schaue mir die Folgen ja auch liebend gerne mit meiner (manchmal ein bisschen rosaroten, haha) Freundschaftsbrille an, aber trotzdem, manchmal finde ich es schade.

My personal theory: They started taking the character seriously and THAT'S when shit hit the fan. Just compare Der Dunkle Fleck to Schwanensee. Boerne making jokes about how weird and pathetic he is vs Boerne thinking he can literally lead group therapy because he did what 2 semester of Psych 25 years ago? He really went from loveable idiot who jokes about how cool he is because everyone can see he's NOT to someone who unironically thinks he's God's gift for medicine.

Imo Münster Tatort comes in three phases: Original (up until Schwanensee): Cruel cop Thiel and pathetic wet cat Boerne, written with genuine nuance. See: Der Dunkle Fleck, Höllenfahrt, Krumme Hunde, Dreimal Schwarzer Kater, Das Zweite Gesicht especially. Then Boerne Retcon (Schwanensee to Väterchen Frost though you cool argue this starting at Fluch der Mumie. But Erkläre Chimäre is the last episode that kind of still fits phase 1 Boerne so I'm making the cut there): Thiel stays largely the same, maybe a little less overtly cruel, but Boerne suddenly gets absolutely retconned into someone who is absolutely full of himself. This is where they started taking an insecure character that saw himself as comic relief and instead of keeping that nuance just made him comic relief who takes himself seriously. Dont get me wrong Phase 1 Boerne was also an ass but not like THIS. See especially: Gott ist auch nur ein Mensch, Schwanensee, Feierstunde. There are MULTIPLE Episodes showing the supposed soft core Boerne has that do not make any sense considering...the previous characterization. Compare Dreimal Schwarzer Kater Boerne to Feierstunde Boerne. One of the only Episodes that make sense with 1st phase Boerne in mind is Lakritz. The writing in general gets a lot less three dimensional - compare side characters like Klemm and Nadeshda from Phase 1 to Phase 2. THEN we enter Phase 3 (Limbus to now): We don't need characterization anymore, because Münster Tatort has been running so long if we give the audience a few cue words they'll fill in the rest themselves. Both Boerne and Thiel are reduced to key word versions of their phase 1 characterizations. For Boerne they chose 'full of himself'. For Thiel they chose 'straight man'. That's literally it. The side characters are basically non existent anymore (tell me one thing you remember about Mirko, I dare you), actual plot is sacrificed for cool concepts and special effects (Limbus, Des Teufels Langer Atem and Propheteus especially). The concept of 'ständige Gegenwart' that was quite easy to ignore in the first episodes is now actively working against dramatic tension and character development - lest I remind you of the MULTIPLE episodes we have were the emotional payoff in the last 10 minutes is the almost ritualized change from Sie zu Du - nevermind that we have episodes from the previous phases were they almost swear blood brotherhood, sleep in the same bed, shower together and get fake married. Boernes previous self deprecating jokes habe now become things you hear you CDU voting uncle say at Sunday dinner. Because that's what a character whos only defining trait is 'full of himself' would say. Because that's what happens when you take a character that uses humor to cover up how out of place he feels and take his obvious jokes about how great he is seriously when you're writing the next episode.

That plus everything you said (though I don't know if I agree with you on your last point) is why, in my opinion, why Münster Tatort has become almost unwatchable.

tatort fans, I need your help

am currently writing a video about why boerne in later episodes is not as funny as before and my main reasons are as follows:

1. liefers doesn’t play him up anymore as this overdramatic kind of guy so his jokes don’t sound and look like jokes anymore but as something he truly believes in 

 2. boerne went from being the comic relief character to being the guy that follows thiel everywhere and sometimes has something funny to say but otherwise he is there to do what the story needs him to do

3. the jokes are not as harsh and scandalous as they once were

so now if you have any opinion on this, if you think I am missing something, if you completely agree with any of this, I would be very thankful if you could hit me up because I don’t feel comfortable writing a video like this and not talking to anybody beforehand. also I have not watched all of tatort münster (hurry up ard mediathek!!) so I really need another person to talk to, just so I can confirm that this is not just happening in the episodes I did see. thank you very much just for reading this lol <3

That's the title of the 'Tatort' (Crime Scene) episode I watched last week. I desided to post some of the beautiful visuals. More than once I gasped in surprise because a lot of things reminded me of another crime drama. And I strongly suspect now that someone involved in the making of 'Schwanensee' is definitely in love with the outstandig cinematography of Sherlock BBC.

Tatort Münster  - the team Thiel & Boerne - achieves the highest audience ratings of all Tatort teams and even of all contemporary German television series. 'Schwanensee' aired on 8th November 2015 - that's two months prior to TAB - and according to Wikipedia it was the most-watched German TV program of that year. Setting a new record with 13,69 millio viewers.

Thiel grew up in Hamburg and worked there as a detective for several years before asking to be transferred to Münster. The reason for this decision was the declining health of his father, who lives in Münster, and the fact that his wife moved to New Zealand with their son. His heart is still strongly attached to his hometown, Hamburg. Thiel tends to be uncommunicative and his methods are rather unconventional but very meticulous. He rents an apartment in the building belonging to Medical Examiner Boerne. Together, they solve crimes.

Nadeshda is Thiel’s hard-working assistant whom he values greatly. She emigrated from Russia and is a distant relative of the Russian explorer Adam Johann von Krusenstern.

PROFESSOR  KARL  FRIEDRICH  BOERNE  -  HEAD  OF THE  INSITUTE  OF  FORENSIC  MEDICINE  &  HIS  COLLEAGUE  DR. SILKE  HALLER

Professor Boerne comes from a very famous Westphalian family, many of his relatives being or having been reputable physicians. He works together with Thiel to solve crimes, their approach being rather unconventional. The collaboration is almost inevitable since Boerne generally interferes in the investigations even if he is not asked to. Boerne is the opposite of Thiel. He is arrogant, vigorous and always has the final say. He doesn't admit to making any mistakes and considers himself a brilliant luminary. Since he is Thiel's landlord and both live in the same house, they sometimes cook together and talk about the current case. Boerne was married but his wife left him for her therapist

Silke Haller is the resolute deputy and closest colleague of professor Boerne. She takes Boerne's allusions to her height in her stride. Haller is very small and Boerne almost unexceptionally calls her “Alberich”, which refers to a dwarf in Wagner's 'Rheingold'. She nevertheless does not feel degraded, particularly because she knows that this is Boerne's way of showing his appreciation.

Wilhelmine Klemm knows a lot of VIPs in Münster and considers herself one too. To get updates on Thiel's ongoing cases, she often appears in his office without invitation. Sometimes she even comes to a crime scene in high heels. She is a notorious chain smoker, who consistently ignores the smoking ban in public buildings.

The  motive  turns  out  to  be  erotomanie.

That's a type of delusional disorder where the affected person believes to be loved by another person who, of course doesn't know anything about it. 'Love madness' - as it is also called -  is a greatly idealized and romanticised love which very often turns into delusional jealousy.

Seems to be love is indeed a very vicious motivator.

Na da lassen wir uns doch nicht lumpen! :D Es ist natürlich schwierig bis unmöglich, bei dem ganzen Videomaterial vom Tatort Münster (37 Folgen! Das macht 55,5 Stunden Spielzeit) eine Top 10 zu erstellen, aber wir dachten, wir fangen die Liste einfach mal an und wer dann noch etwas ergänzen möchte, kann das gerne tun! :D (Die Reihenfolge der Szenen ist btw zufällig und keine Rangordnung)

1. Was natürlich als allererstes in den Sinn kommt, ist die ikonische Szene aus “Zwischen den Ohren”, in der Thiel und Boerne auf Brüderschaft trinken und Boerne auf seinen Kuss bestehen will:

2. Natürlich die Szene, in dem die beiden im “Fluch der Mumie” gemeinsam nackt unter der Dusche stehen ...

... dicht gefolgt von dem Moment, in dem Herbert die beiden in seinem Wohnzimmer entdeckt:

3. Unvergessen die Szene, in der Thiel “Nessun dorma” auf volle Lautstärke gedreht hat, Boerne bei ihm klingelt, sie sich wortlos auf das Sofa setzen und einander Trost spenden. Sonderpunkte für Thiels T-Shirt:

4. Boernes Kocheifer in “Schlangengrube”, der selbstverständlich dazu führt, dass Thiel alle möglichen und unmöglichen Gerichte probieren muss. Am besten direkt von Boernes Löffel gefüttert:

5. Wie verheiratet die beiden in “Erkläre Chimäre” tatsächlich sind, beispielhaft bewiesen an diesem Gif:

Bonusdialog:  Boerne: Apropos Schlitzer - Gehts denn besser mit dem Schlucken? Thiel: Ja, ganz wunderbar, wie verrückt! Boerne: Aber nicht zu gierig, nicht? Sonst muss ich wieder Hand anlegen.

5. Relativ frisch außerdem die Szene aus “Lakritz”, in der wir Thiel sehen, wie er Boerne morgens mit einer Decke zudeckt, nachdem sie die ganze Nacht zusammen den Keller durchwühlt haben und dort eingeschlafen sind:

Etwas älter, aber noch immer Gold wert: Die Szene aus “Spargelzeit”, in der Boerne Thiel nicht nur sagt, dass er Herbert für ein “sexuell hochaktives Wesen” hält und dass der andere sich davon mal “eine Scheibe abschneiden” könnte, sondern außerdem über die besondere Wirkung von Spargel aufklärt:

8. Für den h/c Zugeneigten unter uns darf natürlich das Ende von “Feierstunde” nicht fehlen, wo Thiel fast um Boerne weint, als der andere beinahe stirbt:

9. Häufig unterschlagen, aber definitiv erwähnenswert ist darüber hinaus die Szene aus “Höllenfahrt”, in der Thiel und Boerne Unterschlupf vor dem Regen in einer alten Scheune finden und Boerne erst einmal “Die Weise von Liebe und Tod des Cornets Christoph Rilke” von Rainer Maria Rilke zitiert: 

“REITEN, reiten, reiten, durch den Tag, durch die Nacht, durch den Tag. Reiten, reiten, reiten. Und der Mut ist so müde geworden und die Sehnsucht so groß.”
