How to Vet Authors in Witchcraft-The Buggy Way!
So you’ve found an aesthetically pleasing cover for a book in your local New Age section and you want to know if they’re worth that $25 price tag? You’ve come to the right place! Vetting witchcraft books can be super tricky...especially if you don’t know what to look for!
My process for vetting is pretty simple, but it covers enough bases to see if it might be something to glance at.
Look at who endorses the book! Who has raved about it? Do you know anything about that person? For example when looking at a folk magic book with an introduction from Starr Casas I immediately know there might be some Hoodoo appropriation involved because that’s what she is known for! Having an idea of who the ‘big bads’ are in the type of magic you’re looking at helps considerably.
If the first step isn’t applicable...then I always go to Amazon, Goodreads, Tumblr, etc and look up reviews for the book and author! If there’s even one negative review I read it first then go to the rest.
I look for ‘trigger words’ in reviews or just by flipping pages of the book itself. Words such as (for what I want to avoid in a book): Kabbalah, mixing together wicca and witchcraft as the same thing, sour jars, smudging, totems, white sage, starseed or indigo children, honey jars, voodoo dolls, shifting, claiming magic can cure illnesses like epilepsy or cancer, having ‘control’ over a deity, can cause cataclysms like hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, etc. Astral Projection being for beginners, not suggesting cleansing/protection methods, Atlantian races, ‘sacred feminine’ without the opposite/masculine.
Check the authors social medias/websites! I can’t stress how easy it is to spot someone using hoodoo work like honey jars or (specific) cow tongue bindings when they post all their spellwork on their insta or website.
Do they have a shop? Check out what the shop sells and where it’s located! A lot of Hoodoo and Vodun appropriators have French Quarter ‘conjure’ shops.
Check their bibliography! Is it decently sized for the amount of pages the book has? Does it seem small? Who have they referenced? Is it someone on your personal no-no list? (A decent bibliography for say a well-researched 300 page book would be about 10-15 pages minimum. A lackluster one would be say 5 pages or less.)
Of those references used in the bibliography...are any of them major problematic individuals? Have they referenced the Frosts? Or other big no-nos? If not, you might be good!
If it’s a small bibliography, flip through and see if any of the information sticks out as UPG (unverified personal gnosis) which means things they can’t verify as accurate? If so it might not be the book you need! (Unless you are looking for personal accounts of something.)
Is the author associated with controversy in other areas? A quick google of “Author name controversy” will likely pull up some results if so. Check over the author’s stances on important matters like race, religion, etc if applicable via their social medias.
And there you have it! My quick and easy, google-able vetting process that when mastered only takes a few minutes while standing in a bookstore instead of wasting money on books that don't suit what information you are looking for! It isn't foolproof, but it should help you avoid some of the bigger let-downs.

Hello! I hope your day is going well! I’d like to request a BSD matchup and…I apologize in advance for the chaos of the order the information is in.
I’m a 5’4” 1/16th Russian, 1/8th Asian Caucasian female and I’m 18 years old. I’m an ISTP I’m generally pretty energetic, but not overbearing energetic and I only fall asleep when my eyelids tell me to (unless I have homework due for a class I’m falling behind in the next day) and I’m not one to leave my dorm unless I need to eat or go to class or meet my friends/family. I take responsibility if I know no one else is going to do it in a messy organized way. I’m easily taken advantage of because of my naivety and gullibility. I act like I know more about death, murder, and dark things like that when really, I’m too weak to actually hurt a fly, I’m just skin and bones. I’m very prone to mental breakdowns over the smallest things a friend might say. I love to write stories, read manga, and watch anime. I’m not good at arguing my points, but I can make people addicted to things I’m obsessed with. If I become interested in something, I become obsessed with it, so I have read the light novels, Beast AU, seen the entire series twice and Dead Apple. I don’t mind spoilers though. I love making new OCs for different shows (but I’m EXCESSIVELY SADISTIC about it) and I love to read Yandere!Reader, Suicidal!Reader, Depressed!Reader, and [other anime character]!Reader, Character x Readers to soothe my depressive tendencies. I have severe epilepsy that’s near incurable and the most dangerous seizures happen in my sleep 1-2 times a month, consciously 1 day out the year, but I’ll have like 2-3 of them in intervals and these seizures can risk me suffocating if not treated properly. my grades are mostly A’s and B’s except for a couple classes with D’s. I eat like one or two meals a day (sometimes none because of medication) and when I do, it’s like two pieces of pizza or a tiny bowl of alfredo pasta, so I’m really skinny and light. I have slight acne, but it’s not too noticeable. I can be self-conscious and have depressive (sometimes suicidal) tendencies because I get into my own head, and I have undiagnosed ADD. I rarely use social media unless it’s necessary for school or long-distance communication. I work at a convenience store and I’ve mastered pizza making, cashiering, donut frosting, sandwich making, and coffee making because of it. I just adore that industry and especially the political area of it even though I ignore politics outside of the convenience industry. I’ve always been prone to crushing on villains in shows or manipulative/sadistic/intelligent characters, though I have made an exception for Chuuya because let’s be real, he’s had more hero-like roles than villain-like roles.
You are match up with...
Dazai!
-He also makes sure you eat at least enough - he understands what it is like to not be able to feel like eating and doesn't want you to have that habit.
-He already knows how naïve you could be.
-So he will help you by making sure you don't waste your breath on people who want to take advantage.
-Like even though he is suicidal himself, he doesn't want you to mentally suffer that badly, so he will comfort you by physical contact and gifts.
-He is protective of you, so he doesn't want you to end up in hospital for something he could have prevented, so he makes sure no light flashes near you
-In his opinion, suicide shouldn't be painful, and that is a toll. It should be enjoyable when you do it with him.
-Wants to make pizzas etc with you, you made it sound so fun.

There is definitely some jank and navigation issues like it isn't easy to navigate to your own profile from the tag search (you have to scroll up) and different settings are accessible from different places in a way that's not super intuitive but also not the worst. They've got a pretty decent filtering and content moderation setup, which is nice. There just aren't many people on the site yet so it's lacking content but if more people migrate to the site than that will be fixed. You can tell its a work in progress but it feels pretty intentional and thought out.
ALSO big plus blocking also means that you won't see the person you block and they won't be able to see you either. Which is how blocking SHOULD work. They've also got a silencing option which just stops you from seeing them.
And they ban explicit art featuring minors (both of the real and fictional variety) AND RPF featuring minors and ANY posts that are pro-pedo. And they have mandatory content warnings around certain things. Their rules aren't perfect but I think they are about as solid as you are going to get without censoring people who want to write or draw art tackling the subject of csa.
They DO have rules against post spam (so no reblogging the same post 50x in a row) but from the looks of things that might only get you in trouble if op reports you on it? I'm not quite sure.
They have a built in warning system to hide flashing media that they encourage people to use to protect users with photosensitive epilepsy.

ur totally dead!
exploring digital ghosts, tools for grieving and legacies
written by kaylz
Have you ever wondered what happens when you die? Well, sucks, I can’t answer that question.
What I can talk about is what happens to your social media and online data when you die; an issue not often considered by the masses who are caught up in the present cycles of consumerism and the newest TikTok trends, or the older generation who doesn’t understand the world’s rapidly evolving technology. However, there is a dedicated following of those interested in the topic of thanotechnology, digital technology used post-death for things like memorialization.
Oliver Misraje writes about thanotechnology, how our legacies outlast us online, ghosts in the digital space and some ways people use technology to process or express their grief in the article “The Internet is a Graveyard”. Misraje explains how after we die our digital remains, the data we leave behind on social media and other technological networks, form a “HTTP ghost” of the user we were. This ghost becomes our digital legacy, offering a snapshot of insight into our curated online personality and life in the 21st century more broadly. We are constantly creating digital archives — that we don’t own — of our day-to-day lives. These can be valuable historical resources for the future if Big Tech companies (like Facebook and Apple) don't delete them, but this means that these companies control the future of our historical narrative just like they control what happens with our current data.
Often, the issue of digital legacies isn’t relevant until someone is already gone. If you’ve had a loved one pass is recent years then you may have had to go through the process of deleting or memorializing their social media accounts, which usually requires a proof of death; this may include a death certificate, obituary article, or an online will. A popular example is the Instagram account of child star Cameron Boyce, popular from the Disney Channel show Jessie, who died in 2019 from complications with epilepsy. His account still retains 12.1 million followers, but has a distinct “Remembering” banner in the bio.
Considering that 4.48 billion people use social media (that’s more than half the population!!) and there will be a projected 4.9 billion inactive accounts on Facebook by 2100, it’s important to know how to protect your digital legacy. FYI, the best way to ensure your digital accounts are handled when you die is to create an online will or appoint a legacy contact who has access to your passwords when the time comes.
Another way technology can help us come to terms with death is through emerging digital tools that help us grieve. Misraje’s article contains examples of using AI or chatbots to seek closure, trying Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy, and the terrifying prospect of Big Tech monopolizing on our digital ghosts. Underappreciated online resources also include hotlines and messaging services that support people struggling with mental health issues or crises.
Another interesting suggestion from Misraje is poetic therapy. Humans have been writing poems about loss and in memoriam of loved ones since the days of Ancient Greece, and the poetic form of the elegy was popularized during the Renaissance. It led to classics like W.H. Auden’s “In Memory of W.B. Yeats” and the lyric, “Is it romantic how all my elegies / Eulogize me?” by Taylor Swift on the bonus track “the lakes” from her 2020 album folklore.
Eulogies and elegies are similar, with the key difference being that an elegy is typically some kind of prose, but both are writings that express sorrow or melancholy – usually over the loss of a family member, close friend, or lover. Misraje’s article includes an example of how a journalist named Vauhini Vara successfully prompted GPT-3 to write about her sister’s death. With the recent explosion of popularity for AI systems like ChatGPT, why not use the easily accessible digital tools at the tips of your fingers to process overwhelming emotions like grief and explore the human ability to create emotional connection with technology?
Or, if you’re feeling technology-adverse, you can always try it the old-fashioned way and write out your own feelings with a pen and some paper. Grief is one of those nearly intangible emotions, functioning – much like the Internet itself – in an omnipresent and difficult-to-pin-down way, and everyone has to experience and process it in their own time. Yet, regardless of your comfort level with using digital tools to grieve, it’s important to understand how thanotechnology is developing and the impact it can have on your digital legacy.
Ultimately, I’ll never be able to tell you what happens when you die, but I can advise you to protect your digital legacy – and pick a legacy contact who will never show your family your spam Instagram account.
TTYL, kaylz :)

Cyberflashing Crackdown Starts Today in the UK
Cyberflashing and Online Abuse: A New Era of Accountability
In an unprecedented move, the UK has introduced tough new laws aimed at curbing online abuse, including cyberflashing, the spread of harmful fake news, and other forms of digital harassment. Starting today, perpetrators can face significant prison time, signifying a decisive shift towards greater online safety and responsibility. The Online Safety Act: A Global Benchmark As part of the Online Safety Act, the UK is pioneering efforts to make the internet a safer place. Offenders of cyberflashing, sending death threats, and epilepsy-trolling now face severe penalties, including prison sentences. This act not only targets individual abusers but also sets a global standard for internet safety, challenging other nations to follow suit. Zach's Law: A Victory Against Epilepsy-Trolling A standout feature of the new legislation is Zach's Law, named after a young epilepsy campaigner targeted by online trolls. Additionally, this law criminalizes the act of sending flashing images to trigger seizures in individuals with epilepsy. Importantly, this marks a significant step forward in protecting vulnerable internet users from malicious attacks. Cracking Down on Fake News and Threatening Communications In addition to protecting individuals from personal attacks, the legislation introduces offences for spreading fake news that could cause significant harm and for making threatening communications online. These measures are part of a broader effort to ensure that the digital world is subject to the same legal standards as the physical one, promoting a culture of respect and safety. Protecting Victims of Revenge Porn The legislation also addresses the non-consensual sharing of intimate images, commonly known as revenge porn. Offenders now face up to two years in prison, with increased sentences for those intending to cause distress or obtain sexual gratification. This move is a critical step in safeguarding individuals' privacy and dignity online. The Role of Technology Companies While the new offences are designed to bring individuals to justice, the Online Safety Act also places significant responsibility on tech companies and social media platforms. These entities are now required to design safety into their platforms, preventing harmful content from spreading and protecting users from abuse. A Future of Enhanced Online Safety The introduction of these laws marks a pivotal moment in the fight against online abuse. By holding individuals and companies accountable, the UK is leading the way in creating a safer, more respectful digital environment. As technology evolves, so too must our approach to online safety, ensuring that the internet remains a space for positive engagement and innovation. With the implementation of the Online Safety Act, the UK reaffirms its commitment to protecting its citizens from online harm. This legislation not only punishes offenders but also serves as a deterrent, promoting a culture of respect and safety in the digital realm. As we move forward, we must continue to adapt and refine our legal frameworks to address the challenges of the digital age, ensuring a safe and inclusive online community for all. Sadé Lewis of Queens, New York, has suffered migraines since she was a kid, and as she started college, they got worse. A recent change in her insurance left the 27-year-old looking for a new neurologist. That’s when she found West 14 Street MedicalArts in New York.
MedicalArts recommended that she get an electroencephalogram (EEG) and an MRI to make sure her brain was functioning properly.
An EEG is a test to measure the electrical activity of the brain. It can find changes in brain activity that can help in diagnosing conditions including epilepsy, sleep disorders, and brain tumors. During the procedure, electrodes consisting of small metal discs with attached wires are pasted onto the scalp using adhesive, or attached to an electrode cap that you wear on your head.
A little over a week before her EEG, Lewis was given instructions that she didn’t remember getting before a previous EEG appointment.
To Lewis’ surprise, patients were told to remove all hair extensions, braids, cornrows, wigs, etc. Also, she was to wash her hair with a mild shampoo the night before the appointment and not use any conditioners, hair creams, sprays, oils, or styling gels.
“The first thing I literally did was text it to my best friend, and I was, like, this is kind of anti-Black,” Lewis said. “I just feel like it creates a bunch of confusion, and it alienates patients who obviously need these procedures done.”
The restrictions could discourage people with thick, curly, and textured hair from going forward with their care. People with more permanent styles like locs — a hairstyle in which hair strands are coiled, braided, twisted, or palm-rolled to create a rope-like appearance — might be barred from getting the test done.
Kinky or curly hair textures are typically more delicate and susceptible to damage. As a result, people with curlier hair textures often wear protective hairstyles, such as weaves, braids, and twists, which help maintain hair length and health by keeping the ends of the hair tucked away and minimizing manipulation.
After receiving the instructions, Lewis scoured the internet and social media channels to see if she could find more information on best practices. But she noticed that for people with thick and textured hair, there were few tips on best hairstyles for an EEG.
Lewis has thick, curly hair and believed that explicitly following the instructions on the preparation worksheet would make it harder, not easier, for the technician to reach her scalp. Lewis decided that her mini-twists — a protective style in which the hair is parted into small sections and twisted — would be the best way for her to show up to the appointment with clean and product-free hair that still allowed for easy access to her scalp.
Lewis felt comfortable with her plan and did not think about it again until she received a reminder email the day before her EEG and MRI appointment that restated the restrictive instructions and added a warning: Failure to comply would result in the appointment being rescheduled and a $50 same-day cancellation fee.
To avoid the penalty, Lewis emailed the facility with her concerns and attached photos.
“I got kind of worried, and I sent them pictures of my hair thinking that it would go well, and they would be, like, ‘Oh yeah, that’s fine. We see what you see,’” said Lewis.
Soon after, she received a call from the facility and was told she would not be able to get the procedure done with her hair in the twists. After the call, Lewis posted a TikTok video detailing the conversation. She expressed her frustration and felt that the person on the phone was “close-minded.”
“As a Black woman, that is so exclusionary for coarse and thick hair. To literally have no product in your hair and show up with it loose, you’re not even reaching my scalp with that,” Lewis said in her video.
The comments section on Lewis’ TikTok video is full of people sharing in her frustration and confusion or recounting similar experiences with EEG scheduling.
West 14 Street MedicalArts declined to comment for this article.
The New York medical center is not the only facility with similar EEG prep instructions. The Neurology Center, which has several locations in the Washington, D.C., area, provides EEG pretest instructions for patients reading, “Please remove any hair extensions or additions. Do not use hair treatment products such as hair spray, conditioners, or hair dressing, nor should you fix your hair in tight braids or corn rows.”
Marc Hanna, the neurophysiology supervisor at the center’s White Oak location in Silver Spring, Maryland, has more than 30 years of experience performing EEGs. He oversees 10-12 EEG technicians at the facility.
Hanna said the hair rules are meant to help a technician get an accurate reading from the test. “The electrodes need to sit flat on the scalp, and they need to be in precise spots on the scalp that are equally apart from each other,” Hanna said.
For people with thick and curly hair, this can be a challenge.
A 2020 article from Science News detailed a study that measured how much coarse, curly hair could interfere with measuring brain signals. A good EEG signal is considered to have less than 50 kilo-Ohms of impedance, but the researchers found unbraided, curly hair with standard electrodes yielded 615 kilo-Ohms.
Researchers are working to better capture brain waves of people with naturally thick and curly hair. Joy Jackson, a biomedical engineering major at the University of Miami, developed a clip-like device that can help electrodes better adhere to the scalp.
Experimentation with different braiding patterns and flexible electrode clips shaped like dragonfly wings, designed to push under the braids, has had promising results. A study, published by bioRxiv, found this method resulted in a reading well within the range for a reliable EEG measurement.
But more research has to be done before products like these are widely used by medical facilities.
Hanna said the facility where he works does not automatically ask patients to remove their protective styles because sometimes the technician can complete the test without them doing so.
“Each one of those cases are an individual case,” Hanna said. “So, at our facility, we don’t ask the patient to take all their braids out. We just ask them to come in. Sometimes, if one of the technicians are available when the patient is scheduling, they’ll just look at the hair and say, ‘OK, we can do it’ or ‘We don’t think we can do it.’ And we even might say, ‘We don’t think we can do it but come in and we’ll try.’”
In practice, Hanna said, it’s not common for hair to be an issue. But for patients whose hairstyle might make the test inaccurate, he said, it becomes a conversation between the doctor and the patient.
When Lewis arrived the following day for her MRI and EEG appointment, she was told her EEG had been canceled.
“It was just kind of baffling a little bit because, literally, as soon as I walk in, I saw about four different Black women who all had either twists, locs, braids, or something,” she said. “And on the call, the woman was saying if you come in and my hair is not loose, we’re going to charge you. And she did recommend to cancel my appointment. But I never approved that.”
After Lewis explained what happened during the phone call, she said, the receptionist was very apologetic and said the information Lewis was given was not true. Lewis said she spoke with one of the EEG technicians at the facility to confirm that her mini-twists would work for the test — and felt a sigh of relief when she saw the technician was also a Black woman.
“The technician, I think overall, they just made me feel safe,” Lewis said. “Because I felt like they could identify with me just from a cultural standpoint, a racial standpoint. So, it did make me feel a little bit more valid in my feelings.”
Lewis later returned to the facility to get the procedure done while still wearing mini-twists. This time, the process was seamless.
Her advice for other patients? “When you feel something, definitely speak out, ask questions.”

Treatment for an Ear Infection
A doctor should see all cases of earache. He has the right equipment to examine the ears and provide the appropriate treatment.
Children under six years old are at risk for frequent middle ear infections or recurrent media otitis media. This is the most common diagnosis in medical clinics. Middle ear infections can be caused by a variety of bacteria and viruses. Branhamella catarrahalis (Ba-cat) is the most common cause of middle ear infections in children. Food allergies are another reason for frequent ear infections in children.
It is important to avoid eating foods that are mucous-forming. Natural decongestants such as the herbal combination HAS, AllergyCheck can be used to dry it up. This can make a huge difference. Avoiding common allergenic foods like wheat, dairy products and peanut butter, as well as citrus fruits, bananas, and citrus fruits, may be beneficial.
Garlic oil can be used to treat ear infections in children. You can buy ready-made. A Naturopath recommended a garlic oil extract for children's ear drops. The child was able to get rid of the ear infection within two days. If ear pain is a problem in your household, I strongly advise you to seek medical advice before injecting anything into the ears.
Ear and Nerve Formula, a herbal formula, has been used to treat ear problems. It can relieve symptoms of nervous disability and hysteria. It can be helpful in epilepsy cases.
Low iron levels can cause dizziness, vertigo, earache, and other symptoms such as vertigo. An iron supplement may be necessary. It is important to ensure that the iron supplement contains iron, vitamin B12 and vitamin C. These are essential for proper iron absorption and utilisation. Also Click here to know more additional details.
Vitamin A is required to protect the mucous membranes and support the immune system. Echinacea and Garlic Oil, Golden Seal and Mullein all work well as anti-mucous and antibiotic herbs.
Ear Infections can be treated with nutritional and herbal support.
Vitamin C and Zinc - Increases immunity and helps to reduce infections.
Bio Attack - A capsule that contains a herbal formula and olive leaf, as well as anti-fungal herbs.
Sambucol Immune is a liquid immune booster that combats both viral infections and bacterial ones.
Earmed Relief - Homeopathic remedy for earache.
Eutherol - Great tasting menthol liquid herbal formula that is a powerful antiseptic/antibiotic. Dropper in the ear or orally.
Here are some interesting facts about ear infections:
Avoid wheat, dairy products and corn.
To fight infection, you can take an alcohol-free Echinacea/Golden Seal oil internally.
Warm garlic oil and mullein have been used to relieve pain.
To reduce the possibility of allergic reactions, rotate your food.
To help your body fight infection, take a vitamin supplement.
If you have an ear infection, don't blow your nose. The ear canal should be kept dry. It can be hazardous to retain soap or water in the canal. When you are taking a shower or bath, put cotton in your ear canal.
Swimming should be avoided until your healing process is complete.
You can unblock blocked ears by chewing gum, blowing up balloons, or using chewing gum.
Diazziness, ringing or bleeding in the ears, or sudden decreases in pain or dizziness in one or both of your ears, should be reported to your doctor immediately. This could be a sign of a ruptured or damaged eardrum.

I'm glad to hear this. I have major concerns about the privacy problems of the UK's Online Safety Act, which this is part of, but this part of it is a victory. Thanks to OP for posting!
Excerpt from the article:
"The Epilepsy Society's Chief Executive, Clare Pelham, backed these comments, saying: “This is an historic day for everyone with epilepsy. Three years ago, when the Epilepsy Society’s Twitter account was flooded with flashing images and GIFs designed to cause seizures, we felt helpless in trying to stop them. The trolls were operating beyond the reach of the law because the law, written in the time of typewriters and printer’s ink, had not kept pace with the digital world.
“It is life-affirming today to be celebrating the enactment of the Online Safety Bill which includes a new law – Zach’s Law – which means the trolling of anyone with epilepsy to deliberately cause seizures will become a criminal offence carrying a maximum sentence of five years’ imprisonment. And importantly social media companies who have provided a fertile environment for these keyboard warriors to hide in plain sight, will also face heavy penalties if they allow this behaviour to continue.”
“I believe this is the first time anywhere in the world that a law has been written specifically to protect people with epilepsy and I feel proud that our country is leading the way in protecting disabled people in the digital world.”"
-via Epilepsy Society, September 19, 2023
I'm so so so happy about this!

My dear lgbt+ kids,
Some people say “trigger warnings are important, you should protect people by clearly labeling your content!”. Some people say “it’s your own responsibility to avoid triggering content!”
Who is right? Both are.
Those two opinions do not actually contradict each other - trigger warnings are important because they enable people to take care of themselves by avoiding content that is triggering to them.
You wouldn’t put up a sign “Free movie screening” and then show a violent horror movie or a porn movie to the random group that took you up on that offer - you would make sure they know what they are about to see, so you don’t accidentally show porn to a group of kids or sexual abuse survivors.
On social media, your audience is always a random group of people - so of course you should let them know when you post something that is known to be upsetting for a large group of people: stuff that isn’t safe for kids, common trauma triggers (like abuse), flashing lights that could trigger epilepsy... these are all pretty obvious things you’d warn people about in real life, too.
Clearly labeling your content if you post such things online allows people to skip those posts or choose not to follow you etc. You being responsible and labeling it allows them to be responsible and avoid these posts.
However, to stay with the movie metaphor: if you put up a sign “Free screening of horror movie” and someone who can’t watch horror decides to walk in anyway, that’s no longer your responsibility. The same thing goes if blonde wigs trigger panic attacks in them and the main character in your movie wears one. Uncommon triggers are valid and as real as the common ones - but they can’t expect you to guess such a highly specific trigger. In this case, it’d be their responsibility to ask you if there are any characters with blonde wigs in that movie or to look up that info online etc. (On social media, this would translate to them blacklisting posts with the tag “wig”, unfollowing blogs that are likely to post pictures of wigs etc.)
Long story short: Creators on social media have a responsibility to protect the consumer AND the consumer has a responsibility to protect themselves. We need to work together.
With all my love,
Your Tumblr Dad

Ok, so I found ONE epilepsy seizure protecting web extension that works (as long as you don't use Enhancer for YouTube). It's called: Seizafe - Epilepsy Alert for YouTube™. It has three levels of protection while watching YouTube and stops the video with a warning before a potentially triggering scene. I use the lowest setting personally, and that works for me. I didn't realize until now just how hostile all of media is to those with epilepsy. A warning will show up a lot even with the lowest setting, for good reason! Sadly, it only works on YouTube. It only monitors YouTube videos and nothing else, but it's something and I highly recommend it. It's only in the Chrome Web Store (but, if you use any Chromium based browser you can access it) though which sucks, but I can live with Opera, I guess. Seriously though, if you have epilepsy, TRY IT.

Not quite the same issue but I feel like it’s too important/similar to constrain to tags. I didn’t really notice it in the Spiderverse or Incredibles 2, except maybe in the moment and then I forgot about it, but those mentions reminded me:
I watched Spider-Man: Far From Home and totally freaked out when Mysterio messed with reality. I thought maybe it was just a one-off thing and that I was just feeling a little extra sensitive then. I can’t remember if I saw that in theaters, but I definitely saw the first Doctor Strange movie at home, and that still managed to mess me up. Though not quite as bad. Then when No Way Home came out, I knew that had Strange in it, but I kinda forgot because I was just focused on the Spider-Man trilogy hype. But lo and behold, seeing that in theatres made me cry, and not because of any emotional content. Then we went to see Multiverse of Madness when it came out (which I was unprepared for anyway since I was told we were going to see it about five minutes before leaving, so I had no time to psyche myself up) and that one almost sent me into a panic attack. While not the same types of visuals, it was the things I saw that messed with me, not so much the general unreality part, so though it is not flashing lights, I believe that there is something else relating to sensory sensitivity and overstimulating visuals that is also growing in popular media.
This is just Marvel, so it’s a small example, and there could be more out there from different studios, or other examples of this from Marvels other recent films that I haven’t seen. But even in a small scale like this, there is clearly an issue. I do not have epilepsy and I’m not nearly as photosensitive as others, but I notice and appreciate the warnings I see when watching episodes of a show or starting a movie on whatever platform at home. I know they don’t affect me much, and yet I feel better when I see them, because I know that it could help someone else. They are completely unobtrusive and don’t take up enough time to cause any problems, so how could anyone want these helpful notes gone? They are a wonderful courtesy to have, and should be even more than that. I am shocked that there is not more protection for these advisories, because even though the US doesn’t have a good reputation for caring about people, the ratings boards and associations have a lot of regulations regarding such similar things. They could and should enforce seizure warnings the same way they enforce other content warnings.
I was scared in those movie situations, and I’m still worried when I think about them, or when I consider what else I want to watch. If I, a person outside the epileptic community, am this frightened by these instances, then imagine how much worse these, and the prior and more standard examples, must be for those who do have epilepsy or other photosensitivity issues much greater than my own. Imagine how terrifying it must be to not know if you’ll be safe because a director couldn’t, or rather, wouldn’t, put up a simple warning. Just think about that.
Yes, we have outside sources like doesthedogdie, movie reviews, even trailers, and then just web searches as a whole, but nobody should have to go out of their way to make sure they’ll be alright just watching a single movie. People deserve better. We all deserve to be happy and enjoy things. Without fear.
I'm not epileptic, but between the Cyberpunk2077 and Avatar 2 stuff, is anyone else getting the feeling that studios are getting a bit more...lax with making sure their shit doesn't cause seizures in photosensitive people?
