Charybdis is a sea monster that creates giant whirlpools that can suck in full ships! Most of the time she is located directly across from Scylla, forcing sailors to choose which monster to pass by. In most myths she was cast into the sea where she is by Zeus, either because she helped Poseidon when he was feuding with Zeus, or because she stole from Heracles. In addition, sometimes in mythology Charybdis is a child of Gaia and Poseidon!

FUN FACT TIME:

In the Odyssey, after being released from Calypsos island, he made his way to the Phaeacians. They take him in, give him food and clothes, and they also compete in some games (which Odysseus smokes them in cause someone makes fun of him). He also cries a couple times when they start singing songs of the Trojan war. He then tells them his name and story (Most of Odysseus’ journey is told through this as a flashback of sorts). Later they give him a boat to sail home!

This is one of the major ways Epic and the Odyssey are different, because to my knowledge Jorge has no plans to include the Phaeacians.

Today’s fun fact is less of a fun fact, and more of a list. We all rag on Zeus for having a lot of kids. But you know who else has an ungodly amount of kids? Poseidon. So here are some of his notable kids. (Keyword, SOME. There are too many and it would take me too long to write out All of them)

Triton, Pegasus, Chrysaor, Polyphemus, Theseus, In some versions Aeolus, Lamia, Kymopoleia, Antaeus, Desponia, Arion, Bellerophon, Orion, Charybdis, Chrysomallus, and many many more!

One of Hermes symbols is his caduceus, which is a staff with two serpents intwining it, with wings at the top. Often times this caduceus is mixed up with the rod of Asclepius (the Greek god of healing), which only has one snake!

When Hermes was newly born, he stole some cattle from Apollo’s Sacred Herd (yes they are sun cows- no they are not Helios’ cows from the Odyssey- different cows). While making his escape, he killed a cow, and using a tortoise shell and the cow guys, he made the first Lyre! When he was later caught by Apollo, he traded the Lyre to Apollo (which later became his instrument) in exchange for the herd, and not being punished!
