Odysseus’ mother, Anticlea, was the grandchild of Hermes, making Odysseus Hermes Great Grandson!

Odysseus’ father Laertes is still alive when he returns to Ithaca, although he has isolated himself from grief.

Penelope’s father is Icarius of Sparta, and her mother is sometimes said to be the sea nymph Periboea. Helen of Sparta (and later of Troy) is her cousin!

Fun Fact!!!

As promised- the story of how Odysseus came to marry Penelope! So, as everyone gathered to win the hand of Helen of Sparta,   Odysseus was instead drawn to Penelope. (Odysseus also was the one who suggested the oath that all Helen’s suitors took which compelled them to fight if she was stolen, which she was and started the war). When they got married, Odysseus built them a marriage bed into an olive tree that had grown where the bedroom was built. As such, it was unmovable, which will be relevant later :3

Fun Fact! When Odysseus returns to Ithaca, his old nurse Eurycleia is able to recognize him (without him revealing himself) because of the scar on his leg from the boar hunt he had participated in as a child!

The Last Fun Fact: In the Odyssey, when Odysseus reveals himself to the suitors, he casts off his old bigger disguise. He was wearing nothing underneath. He proceeds to kill the suitors nude.

Out of the 108 suitors, there was one that wasn’t as bad as the others! His name was Amphinomus, and he tried to stop the other suitors from trying to kill Telemachus, and was just generally better behaved! In the grand scheme of things though, it didn’t matter and he died alongside the other suitors all the same.
