Exploring the word CHAKRAVARTIN and its symbolic associations:
The term chakravartin, usually translated as 'universal monarch or emperor', literally means 'wheel-turner' or 'a wheel that travels everywhere without obstruction'. The prefix 'chakra' or wheel is a familar term but has various interpretations. It can refer to the fiery wheel of the sun, or the sun god's chariot of two wheels (heaven and earth), which rides through the sky drawn by seven horses, representing the seven days of the week. As an emblem of Vishnu it is the discus, which appears as an auspicious sign on the palms and soles of divine beings. As a unit of land measure the chakra refers to the whole of a land's surface area, from coast to coast. This is implied in descriptions of the chakra touching the rim of the horizon, or the encircling perimeter of land seen as a disc from a central vantage point. The turning of the wheel symbolises both secular and religious authority; it denotes change, movement, extension, conquest, and the formation of a new ethical and moral order. The deliverance and transmission of the Buddhist teachings are known as 'turning the wheel of dharma'.
When Shakyamuni Buddha was born the great seer Asita interpreted the miraculous events and auspicious marks on the baby's body as divine indications that the child was destined to become either a chakravartin or an enlightened Buddha; temporal or spiritual sovereignty lay in the child's destiny. There was a choice, the pendulum could swing either way. It was for this reason that Shakyamuni's father, King Shuddhodana, endeavoured to keep his son away from the harsh realities of life, cocooning him in the opulence of sensual gratification and the illusion that youth, vitality, and beauty are eternal delights. Curiosity beckoned the young prince to venture beyond his golden cage, where he witnessed the god sent apparitions of old age, disease, and death. The realisation that suffering was man's lot tore asunder the illusory veil of eternalism and materialism. What could it profit a man to gain the whole world if in the end one's soul was lost in the deterioration of old age, disease, and death and decompostion? In the face of such blatant impermanence there was no longer any choice for the young prince. World domination was the ultimate illusion; only self-enquiry into the root cause of suffering and the nature of the mind, the eternal quest, could lead to the ultimate understanding of reality.
The concept of the chakravartin probably arose from the Vaishnavite ideal of the mahapurusha or 'great man', which in turn had its origins in the Vedic and Puranic epics of ancient India. Such a being is destined to become a world leader and, like the Buddha, there can only be one chakravartin in the world at any one time. Auspicious events and astrological configurations precede the birth of a chakravartin, reminding one of the journey of the three Magi to Jesus's birthplace seeking the one 'who would be born king of the Jews'. The role of the Messiah in ancient Judaism also referred to both a temporal and spiritual sovereignty.
Thirty-two major marks and eighty minor marks appear on the body of a chakravartin. These include: slightly webbed fingers and toes; retracted sexual organs; a fleshy protuberance (ushnisha) on the head; lion-like chest, thighs, and jaws; soft smooth skin; pliant hands and feet; and a thousand spoked wheel mark on the soles of the feet. The mother of a chakravartin usually dies shortly after his birth, as was the case with Queen Maya, Shakyamuni's mother. A total eclipse of the sun is believed to coincide with the death of the chakravartin as the sun itself is represented as the personification of the chakravartin. The Asiatic concept of the 'solar death' of the chakravartin finds a parallel in the midday darkness at Jesus's crucifixion, which is believed to have been
caused by a total eclipse of the sun. The birth of a chakravartin heralds the onset of seven wealths or abundances which arise in the realm: a wealth of faith, morality, honesty, modesty, learning, renunciation, and wisdom. At the time of his birth his seven precious jewels or possessions also appear simultaneously: the precious wheel, jewel, queen, minister elephant, horse, and general. These seven possessions are the property of the chakravartin, and karmically come into existence as his mandala The wheel and jewel are both symbols of his temporal and spiritual majesty, and the miraculous means of its accomplishment. The horse and elephant, as symbols of inexhaustible speed and strength, are his vehicles. The queen, minister and general are his trinity of love wisdom, and power, their fidelity, his blessing.
An auxiliary or lesser group of seven royal jewels also acompanies the rule of the chakravartin. These are the sword, the naga skin, the throne, the robes, the boots, the royal house ar palace, and the palace gardens. These seven secondary jewels represent the material inheritance or attributes of the chakravartin.
A third group of seven auspicious royal jewels also occur as insignia or emblems of the chakravartin's possessions. These comprise the rhinoceros horn, the square earrings of the minister, a branch of precious coral, the round earrings of the queen, the insignia of the general, a pair of elephants tusks, and a triple-eyed gem enclosed in a trefoil gold mount. These seven symbols represent the precious horse, minister, wheel, queen, general, elephant, and jewel respectively. As a single composite group these seven insignia are very commonly placed as offerings before deities, usually appearing amongst piles or lines of coloured, oval-shaped jewels.
The investiture of the chakravartin as ruler was ceremoniously conferred by anointing him with water drawn from the four directional oceans or lakes surrounding his realm. Similarly tantric initiation into a mandala requires the disciple to be sprinkled with water from five vases placed at the mandala's centre and four cardinal directions. The mandala palace itself is modelled on the divine four gated palace of the chakravartin. The Dravidian temples of southem India, the Mesopotamian ziggurat, the Chinese impe- rial palace of the forbidden city, and the royal Persian palace. all comprise architectural ideals comparable to the divine abode of the chakravartin or universal monarch.
Alexander the Great, whose thirteen-year conquest extended his empire westward from Greece and Egypt to the Indus river, may have been seen as a secular chakravartin. Yet his untimely death from fever in 323 BC, at the age of thirty-three, put an end to his potential divinity. The Indian Buddhist emperor Ashoka, who ruled over two thirds of India between 273 and 232 BC, was a far more worthy can- didate. A bloodthirsty military campaign sickened the victorious Ashoka, Renouncing violence he adopted Buddhism, and from his capital city of Pataliputra (near modern day Patna in Bihar state) he sent out Buddhist monks to proclaim the dharma in all directions. Historically, after Shakyamuni himself, the emperor Ashoka was the most important figure in the propagation of Buddhism. Around the beginning of the second century AD, Kanishka, the emperor of the Kushana dynasty, advanced Ashoka's example. From his capital city of Purushupura (now Peshawar), Kanishka introduced Buddhism into Afghanistan and the Swat,
Gandhara, and Kashmir areas of northwest India (now Pakistan). From Gandhara some of the earliest Buddha images evolved, interestingly sculpted in the Greek style by the descendants of Alexander the Great, producing the classic Buddha image.
The chakravartin is, first and foremost, a righteous universal monarch who rules purely through compassion and wisdom. The divine human form realises its perfection in the nondual identification of the chakravartin and bodhisattva ideals.
Just as the sambhogakaya forms of bodhisattvas and goddesses are endowed with the thirty-two major and eighty minor marks of a divine being or chakravartin, so are they likewise attired in the silk robes and ornamental gold jewellery of the ancient Indian kings, princes or princesses. Bodhisattvas are the 'spiritual sons' or princes of the Five Buddhas, they are crowned by them, and as symbols of their investiture bear the image or syllable of their parent Buddha on the crown of their heads. Their golden thrones are modelled on the square-based pedestal thrones of ancient Indian kings, and frequently placed before their thrones are the seven insignia of the chakravartin. Bodhisattvas and goddesses are apparelled in the thirteen sambhogakaya ornaments of a chakravartin, five of which are fashioned of coloured silk, and eight of which are wrought of precious stones and metals. The five silk attires consist of a white upper bodice with gold-embroidered patterns made from Benares silk or muslin (kashikamsuka); a rainbow' or multicoloured skirt or dhoti (panchalika); a yellow silk scarf worn as a sash over one shoulder; a variegated ribbon binding the crown or tiara; and a long blue scarf draped over the shoulders.
The eight precious jewellery ornaments consist of a five jewelled tiara made of natural and divine jewels; golden earrings; a short necklace around the neck; a medium necklace reaching to the level of the heart; a long necklace reaching below the navel; bracelets and armlets; anklets; and a jewelled belt with little silver bells. On peaceful bodhisattvas and goddesses these eight jewelled ornaments are usually condensed into a group of six, representing the six perfections or paramitas of patience (earrings), generosity (necklaces), discipline (bracelets, armlets, and anklets), effort (belt), meditation (jewelled tiara), and wisdom (a divine or flaming jewel above the hair-knots). Semi-wrathful male deities wear the equivalent earrings, necklaces, bracelets, armlets, and anklets, and belt, as bone ornaments, with a bone wheel at the crown of the head symbolising medita- tion, and cemetery ash applied to the forehead symbolising wisdom. Semi-wrathful female goddesses wear only the five bone ornaments; they are not adorned with cemetery ash as their form itself symbolises the perfection of wisdom.
The attributes of the chakravartin are very ancient symbols, dating back to before the time of Shakyamuni, more than two and a half thousand years ago. Other auspicious groups, such as the eight auspicious symbols and the eight symbols of good fortune, originated at a similar point in time. Their meaning and relevance have inevitably become diluted over the course of more than twenty-five centuries; the concept of monarchy itself has virtually collapsed over the last few decades. Yet the transposition of these symbols has remained intact, even though their original utilitarian purposes may now seem extremely redundant.
When Buddhism entered Tibet from India its entire symbolic content entered simultaneously. The depiction of Indian Buddhist deities dressed in the flimsy silks of Indian royalty was a foreign import into Tibet. The same is true of its vast array of jewelled ornaments, offerings, symbols, and motifs. They became indigenous by the philosophical values placed upon them as 'pure symbols', self-existent in their own right as visual encapsulations of the Buddhist teachings. Some fashions change, other traditions endure; hopefully the Buddhas will never be depicted in denim and trainers. The wheel moves on, yet it is always circular and cannot exist without its hub, spokes, and rim.

A little bit of everything :)
For the longest time, I have wanted to write about The Split (Seasons 1-3, 2018-2022). And too for a long time, I have neglected almost all of the creative, literarily effortful sides of myself. I met with my literature teacher from my 2 years in India recently when he visited Singapore and was so moved to realise that for a while, I was known intimately by those around by as someone who wrote about the films I liked and didn't like and this was a part of my identity that 10 years on even a teacher can recall. And yet so disappointed to reflect on how I have left those selves behind. But today I sit at my personal laptop again possibly for the first time in a year with Lotus Inn by Why Don't We playing on loop, as it has been for the last two weeks straight. There is a psychosis to my music consumption where I almost never want to listen to anything but when I do, it can be something so painfully me that I had to get it tattooed on my back (#dawnmistglowing <3) or something that like tonight's, its band name alone tells you enough about the sheer lack of caliber. But it is simply perfection for the needs of the night and again I feel like the bestwalkhome Maya :)
Okay but a false start first before I try my absolute best to reconnect with the deep thinking, witty commenting, cute side of me...:
Had forgotten when my last post here was so I went to take a look and found Stuff I’ve just watched and almost completely did not enjoy (typically epic title sis!!!) from June 2023. It is so beautifully prophetic that this should have been my last paragraph:
Tumblr media
... when the last two movies I have only just two hours ago finished watching by myself on Netflix were Horrible Bosses and Horrible Bosses 2. Hahahahahhaha.... fucking disgusting btw. Me i mean... for watching that shet and sitting through it for 4 hours wtf :'( am I that lonely?????
Okay but a lovely segue has found itself in: Want to hear of a show with indeed no freaking stupid idiot sex references or scene? But instead with the best sexual affair ever!?!?!!?
Tumblr media
Tfw when you take part in the female-written female-led family law drama with equal parts shock and grief and sheer joy and confusion and ambiguous morality and beautifully affecting pain competition but your opponent is the split... Mic drop.... nuff said...
I had thought about so many angles I had wanted to take in putting my feelings on this show down. Perhaps the most obvious one would be to highlight the queen that is Nicola Walker and talk about how her presence made the show. Nicola Walker... whose eyes tell about five to seven stories on average with the slightest glance and re-focusing of her gaze, and whose unequalled skills graced River (2015), Unforgotten (Series 1-4, 2018-2021), creating the trifecta of some of the most intense, resonant, pure raw emotion-led dramas in British television history. Hyperbole aside, in complete honesty, that gaze of hers and the genuine empathy that oozes slowly, comfortingly, and so intelligently from her eyes is something that is too tooooooo inspiring for me at work omfg! I love you so much Nicola!!!
I had first watched season 1 years ago with my mother, and we had both loved it and cried along with it but it was the recent re-watching with Imran earlier this year (and my first watch of seasons 2 and 3) that made me think a lot harder.
Season 1 ended with Hannah (Nicola Walker) deciding, after bearing the weight of her husband's humiliating infidelity for the earlier episodes, to give in to her deepest suppressed feelings of attraction to her current colleague and ex-bestie and to sleep with him. And before he leaves London for a job in Chicago due to his misconceived perception that his attraction to Hannah wasn't returned, Hannah tells him simply, joyfully, the morning her estranged father died, to stay. Aiya shit I wanted to find the exact line she used and just paused to do a Google for 15 minutes to find either a stream online to find the episode or a website with the full scripts but no luck for both. She said something damn nice la it wasn't "stay", I remember in my first watch with my mother I thought it was but then I realised when re-watching that it was something else... Imran do you remember?!?! omg. Need to know now but ANYWAY it was a short phrase that shook the world because this was an upright and principled woman and mother and wife making a very clear conscious decision to have an affair. And most terrifying for the viewer (me... maybe other ppl dont care lol) was that we really, really wanted the affair for her.
This reminds me of the discussion Imran Jade and I just had last night about Trying (2020-2024) and how in a straight relationship, when a woman is unfaithful, it just hits different from when a man is. IT'S JUST FACTS OKAY?!!?!?
But still, that obvious life fact aside, I mean we were reaaally rooting for Hannah, and not just because her husband had been unfaithful prior. The affair (in season 1... ain't gonna talk about season 2 when she lost her mind hehe and was kissing in her office with the door open wtf ew!) was something fulfilling, cathartic, meaningful and natural. And it takes a lot for me to say this iykyk!!!
So anyway, that was the initial angle I was considering - more of an analysis of the actor's genius to make an otherwise controversial subplot something that heals us. But then a while later, I watched this on Netflix this year:
Tumblr media
Honestly wouldn't have clicked on it but Aki wanted to watch it with my mother and I needed an excuse to do some cardio so skipping while watching the first episode it was. And immediately I knew there was something else beneath the surface of the deadbeat abusive father... something quieter and more sensitively done than I'd expected from the promotional content (e.g. the above picture). And when the credits rolled, I was able to put my finger on it:
Tumblr media
Abi Morgan, who wrote/created not only The Split and Eric, but also River... You know the storytelling ability is certifiably legendary when an almost-any-and-every-female-written-show-loving-cinephile like me enjoyed in uniquely different ways all three shows independently before realising they were from the same brain.
So after this realisation, I thought hmm... what stands out about The Split goes beyond Nicola Walker's brilliance but is really about what a story is, can be, how it can challenge, frustrate, and bring so much self-awareness to the viewer. And I have to love Abi Morgan so so so much for this.
Oh but one last thing about Nicola Walker if I may: Unforgotten genuinely turned the British crime/police thriller genre on its head, even more so than Broadchurch (2013-2017) which had a similar thread of humanness running through it, and the distinguishing factor between these two is indeed Nicola Walker's skills. And when she is up against Olivia Coleman in the similar lead role in Broadchurch... that's how you know she is Her <3
Uhh... I think I am done hehe. Did I in fact say anything at all about the show? Perhaps not at all. Some final smatterings:
Tamil pride whoooo (one of the sister's husbands, James, in The Split is seemingly Tamil and the actor's family name is Dharmalingam and his wiki says he's of Sri Lankan heritage so imma just assume he's Jaffna Tamil ba
Well-done subplot of how being a wonderful, perhaps even the best father =/= being a good partner and husband
Should I study to be a lawyer some day???? And slay it like a boss?!
Okay since this post was all sound and fury signifying literally nothing, let me show that there is still some of the 2015 film-analysist self in me (bruh just pause and think about how fucking epic my The Amazing Spider Man 2 x Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man post was... wtaf!!!), I need to show off about two parallels I observed in Inside Out 2 (2024) that I finally saw in cinemas today:
Wasn't the cinematic representation of the 'beliefs' a lot like Wreck-it-Ralph 2's insecurities virus manifestation?
And also a few very Soul (2020)-esque scenes and specific moments and moods right? Yall got notice? No right just me cos I'm so smart?!!?!?
Keke
Night all... Some day I shall be so so so serious and real again. It is always in there, it is. I know it is <3
Pls listen best song ever:

Epic 7 Heroes: Fighter Maya and Last Rider Krau
Gonna talk about two heroes I have been using quite a bit this last two weeks or so.
Tumblr media
I have had Fighter Maya for quite a while and been using her in GW a lot. And for most of the time, I had her with counter gear as her role was limited to just being bait for single target dark units in GW. If you have her and a healer, the enemy Dark Corvus, ML Ravi, ML Ken and other similar units basically can’t get past her while you can slowly but surely chip them off one by one. However, she has gotten buffed since then and now she has a lot more utility and I have recently changed from counter gear to speed gear with an eye for more crit chance, crit dmg and speed. In turn, she lost a bit of def, which is regrettable but at least now she gets to have turns.
She also is useful in the boss challenge event, for pve, especially against Dark Mercedes. Saw on reddit how someone used her there. Since her S3 does 300% more dmg against units which have only 30% of their HP left, that is easier to exploit against bosses. She can hit ridiculously high numbers if she has atk buff, Mercedes is def broken and below 30% HP and F.Maya manages to land a crit, making it easier to get a higher score.
But with this build she also has more utility in PVP. She can go against Arby relatively well. Since she now gets another turn if she kills a unit with her S3, that can be used against Arby to kill him and upon his revive you can either kill him again if F.Maya is strong enough or at least provoke him and stop him from wiping your team. F.Maya also has rather strong modifiers in terms of how her def stat is used to calculate the amount of damage she does. I wish I could give mine better gear in that regard but alas, that is not the case.
She wants a lot of molas though. Mine has her S2 maxed and 4 skill ups in her S1 and 3-4 in her S3. She is a useful tank with surprisingly good single target dmg so she needs the extra dmg from her skill ups.
As for artifacts, well, I have long since used Elbris on her and am hesitant to change it but by now, am thinking about switching to Noble Oath. The increase in def seems to be just better value for her, especially since I have horrible proc luck for Elbris. That said, Elbris can save live. If F.Maya counter attacks at the right time and provokes an enemy, that is just great.
So yeah, useful in pvp and some pve and her S3 is really fun to use. A bit unfortunate in the design area but hey, it is an anime gacha game.
Tumblr media
It was a surprise that I got him but I am really glad I did. He is also surprisingly strong. His barrier is okay, like I don’t think it is that strong or effective but it is definitely nice to have. What is great is his S3 and how against the right teams, he cycles a lot of CDs for it. Like, against an SSB or a counter Dizzy he can basically use his S3 every two turns if he is lucky with his artifact procs. He does a solid amount of dmg penetrating aoe dmg, he is tanky enough to sustain a bit of dmg and with a healer and another dmg mitigating tank that means he should survive long enough to fire his S3 once or twice per match, even more in some arena fights. The immunity he grants is super useful and his S1 speed buff is just really useful.
Speed and immunity is the best and probably even only way to build him barring some sick rolls on an outstanding resistance set where on top of high HP, DEF and Speed, he also somehow has really high ER but that’s unrealistic for me at least. He wants a lot of HP since his dmg is based on his health and he wants a lot of speed to 1. cycle more rounds and fire off his S3 faster and 2. to start relatively early in the match in order to apply the immunity buff. He also wants a good amount of DEF for obvious reasons. He doesn’t need crit chance and crit dmg since his S3 can’t crit and his S1 is not there for dmg, not really. ER is useful, of course, but since he gives himself immunity it is not that important.
He wants his S3 maxed and I have a few molas in his S2 but not convinced he wants any there tbh. His shield is only there for one turn and appears only after the strongest enemy aoe has already struck your team. He also doesn’t need any molas in his S1. Sure, it doesn’t hurt but it is not necessary and there are heroes where it would be far better value to invest the molas in at that point.
As far as artifacts go, he has several options. I was torn between Hilag Lance, Steadfast Gatekeeper and Prophetic Candlestick. The first two because as mentioned earlier, he likes CR pushes but in the end, I decided to go with the candlestick simply because it offered the most chances to get what he wanted the CR pushes more and that is to run down the CD of his S3 as fast as possible. Now with every aoe attack he has a chance of losing 2 CD turns.
He works really well in arena and rta, is useful in RTA and I even used him in hell raid against the bees and he was solid there. Worth building and I am very happy with him

I’ve been tossing this idea around for a long time where I make one o’ them ship lists that folks on here do, but my list is so ridiculously long and I get nervous and constantly forget which ones I’m not actively thinking about, so I never did, but I still kinda really wanna?? If Jason wanted to convince me that Lxa was the love of Clarke's life, he wouldn't have killed her off, effectively cutting their love story permanently, with 4.5 seasons left of the show. Their arc, starting with their introduction in 2x07 and concluding with L's death in 3x07, is 17 episodes long, accounting for 17% of the entire narrative. If I generously add 3x16 to the count, an episode in which L is already dead in the corporeal world Clarke is trying to return to, it's a whopping, grand total of 18%. An 18% congruous with Clarke's intense connection to Bellamy and vice versa, which even A.lycia confirmed as romantic. Feelings romantic enough to spur the formation of a love triangle. An 18% ignoring Clarke's ultimate choice to go back to her people when L wanted her to stay.
CL is a chapter in the story begun and wrapped up in the first half of the narrative. And that's omitting further illumination on the finer details making CL so problematic for Clarke. Do you expect me to believe it was coincidental for CL to occur at a time when Clarke was spiraling down a dark path, commencing with Finn's death? Who played a hand in forcing Clarke's own hand, with Finn, and TonDC, and Mount Weather? Whose example inspired her to ensnare herself in armor and warpaint to be strong enough to save her people? Whose behavior did she emulate in the pushing away of support from her people? Who gave her a place to continue hiding from Bellamy, her mom, and her friends? A place to be someone other than Clarke Griffin? In lieu of facing her fears like the heroine she is? The purpose of CL wasn't to provide Clarke with a magnificent, fairy tale romance gone tragically wrong. I believe Jason's intent with the relationship aimed to further damage Clarke's psyche after L's death, to solidify the belief that her love is not only deadly to its recipients but renders her too weak to do what must be done for survival.
After 3x16, CL is an often superfluous namedrop or two per season for Clarke to briefly react to before carrying on with the plot. Season 5 aside, most of these references are needless enough to be able to interpret them as attempts at reparations for the L/CL fandom's benefit -and their views- without altering the course of the story. Crazy me for thinking it's not enough to constitute an ongoing love story. Crazy me for not thinking this was on par with interactions between living characters. Crazy me for thinking it doesn't befit a love story for the protagonist.
This sliver of the story is what Jason and the CLs would have us unquestionably believe is the pervasive love story of The 100's seven seasons?
Despite his lie and the constant gaslighting from the pineapple CLs, some of us know how to decipher what a temporary love interest is. Lxa? I think you know where I'm heading with this.
I'll acknowledge my admittedly negative appraisal of CL as someone who recognizes its value to the LGBT+ community and treats it as valid while not caring for L/CL on a narrative level. I felt, when swayed by L's influence, Clarke became the antithesis of what I found admirable about her. I resented Clarke's acquiescence of her power to the commander. I wanted nothing more than to remove the wedge L had driven between Clarke and Bellamy.
Let me try to give L/CL the benefit of the doubt for a minute. I don't hold L as responsible for Clarke's choices, but I recognize the prominent role she played in their upbringing. The push and pull was an intriguing aspect of their dynamic, as was the chance to meet a manifestation of who Clarke might have been if she was all head, no heart. Her fall from grace was arguably necessary for her to be a fully-rounded character, not a Mary Sue. It wouldn't be realistic for the protagonist of a tragic story about a brutal world to be a pure cinnamon roll. When forgiveness is an innate theme with Clarke, it would be my bias at work if I was content with her applying it to everyone but Lxa. Clarke saw enough commonalities between her and L to identify with the latter. When she extended forgiveness to L, I believe it was her way of taking the first step on the path to making peace with herself by proxy. None of this means I wanted them paired up. At best, I made my peace with seeing the relationship through to its eventual end. In time for L's death, ironically. My passivity about them notwithstanding, my conclusions are, however, supported by canon.
If I may submit a Doylist reason for romantic CL? Jason knew he had a massive subfandom itching to see them coupled, thereby boosting ratings and generating media buzz. A Watsonian reason? Without relevance, I think L would have been another Anya to Clarke. Grapple shortly with the unfair taking of a life right as they choose to steer towards unity, melancholy giving way to the inconvenience of the loss of a potential, powerful political ally. Romance ensured her arc with L would have the designated impact on Clarke's character moving forward in the next act.
For a show not about relationships, Jason has routinely used romantic love as a shorthand for character and dynamic development. It's happened with so many hastily strung together pairings. And when it does, everyone and their mother bends over backward to defend the relationship. It's romantic because it just is. Didn't you see the kissing? Romantic.
No, The 100 at its core is not about relationships, romantic and otherwise. But stack the number of fans invested exclusively by the action against those of us appreciating a strong plot but are emotionally attached to the characters and dynamics. Who do we think wins? Jason can cry all he wants over an audience refusing to be dazzled solely by his flashy sci-fi.
Funnily enough, "not about relationships'' is only ever applied to Bellarke. Bellarke, a relationship so consistently significant, it's the central dynamic of the show. The backbone on which the story is predicated. Only with Bellarke does it become super imperative to represent male-female platonic relationships. As if Bellarke is the end all, be all of platonic friendship representation on this show. In every single television show in the history of television shows.
Where was this advocacy when B/echo was foisted upon on us after one scene between them where he didn't outright hate Echo? When one interaction before that, he nearly choked the life out of her. If male-female friendship on TV is so sparse, why didn't B/ravens celebrate the familial relationship between Bellamy and Raven? Isn't the fact that they interpret Clarke as abusive to Bellamy all the more reason to praise his oh-so-healthy friendship with Raven as friendship? They might be the one group of shippers at the least liberty to use this argument against Bellarke, lest they want to hear the cacophony of our fandom's laughter at the sheer hypocrisy of the joke. Instead, they've held on with an iron grip to the one sex scene from practically three lifetimes ago when the characters were distracting themselves from their feelings on OTHER people? They've recalled this as "proof" of romance while silent on (or misconstruing) the 99% of narrative wherein they were platonic and the 100% of the time they were canonically non-romantic.
Bellarke is only non-romantic if you believe love stories are told in the space of time it takes for Characters A & B to make out and screw each other onscreen, a timespan amounting to less than the intermission of a quick bathroom break. If it sounds ridiculous, it's because it is. And yet, some can't wrap their heads around the idea that maybe, just maybe, a well-written love story in its entirety is denoted by more than two insubstantial markers and unreliable qualifiers. B/raven had sex, and the deed didn't fashion them into a romance. Jasper and Maya kissed but didn't have sex. Were they half a romantic relationship? Bellarke is paralleled to romantic couples all the time, but it counts for nothing in the eyes of their rival-ship fandom adversaries. Take ship wars out of it by considering Mackson. Like B/echo, the show informed us that Mackson became a couple post-Praimfaya, offscreen, via a kiss. Does anyone fancy them an epic love story with their whisper of a buildup? Since a kiss is all it takes, as dictated by fandom parameters, we should.
If Characters A & B are ensconced in a romantic storyline, then by definition, their relationship is neither non-romantic nor fanon. "Platonic" rings hollow as a descriptor for feelings canonically not so.
If the rest of the fandom doesn't want to take our word for granted, Bob confirmed Bellarke as romantic. Is he as delusional as we are? Bob is not a shipper, but he knows what he was told to perform and how. Why do the pineapples twist themselves in knots to discredit his word? If they are so assured by Jason's word-of-god affirmation, then what credibility does it bear to have Bellarke validated by someone other than the one in charge? They're so quick to aggressively repudiate any statement less than "CL is everything. Nothing else exists. CL is the only fictional love story in The 100, nay, the WORLD. CL is the single greatest man-made invention since the advent of the wheel."
We've all seen a show with a romantic relationship between the leads at the core of the story. We all know the definition of slowburn. We can pinpoint the tropes used to convey romantic feelings. We know conflict is how stories are told. We know when interferences are meant to separate them. We know when obstacles are overcome, they're stronger for it. We know that's why the hurdles exist. We know those impediments often take the shape of interim, third-party love interests. We know what love triangles are. We know pining and longing.
Jason wasn't revolutionary in his structure of Bellarke. He wasn't sly. Jason modeled them no differently than most other shows do with their main romances. Subtler and slower, sure. Sometimes not subtle at all. There's no subtlety in having Clarke viscerally react to multiple shots of Bellamy with his girlfriend. No subtlety in him prioritizing her life over the others in Sanctum's clutches. In her prioritizing his life above all the other lives she was sure would perish if he opened the bunker door. There is no subtlety in Bellamy poisoning his sister to stave off Clarke's impending execution. In her relinquishing 50 Arkadian lives for him after it killed her to choose only 100 to preserve. In her sending the daughter Clarke was hellbent to protect, into the trenches to save him. In him marching across enemy lines to rescue her. In her surrender to her kidnapper to march to potential death, to prevent Bellamy's immediate one. No subtlety in Josie's callouts. No subtlety in Lxa's successful use of his name to convince Clarke to let a bomb drop on an unsuspecting village. Bet every dollar you have that the list goes on and on.
There are a lot of layers to what this show was. It was a tragedy, with hope for light at the end of the tunnel. It was, first and foremost, a post-apocalyptic sci-fi survival drama. Within this overarch is the story of how the union of Clarke Griffin and Bellamy Blake saves humanity, ushering in an age of peace. In this regard, their relationship transcended romance. But with the two of them growing exponentially more intimate each season, pulled apart by obstacles only to draw closer once again, theirs was a love story. A romantic opus, the crescendo timed in such a way that the resolution of this storyline -the moment they get together- would align with the resolution of the main plot. Tying Bellarke to the completion of this tale made them more meaningful than any other relationship on this show, not less.
Whereas the trend with every other pair was to chronicle whether they survived this hostile world intact or succumbed to it, Bellarke was a slowburn. A unique appellation for the couples on this show, but not disqualifying them from romantic acknowledgment.
Framing Bellarke in this manner was 100% Jason's choice. If he wanted the audience to treat them as platonic, he should have made it clear within the narrative itself, not through vague, word-of-god dispatches. A mishandled 180-degree swerve at the clutch as a consequence of extra-textual factors doesn't negate the 84% of the story prior. It's just bad writing to not follow through. And Jason's poor, nearsighted decisions ruined a hell of a lot more than a Bellarke endgame.
The problem is, when Bellarke is legitimized, the pineapples are yanked out of their fantasies where they get to pretend the quoted exaggerations above are real. Here I'm embellishing, but some of them have deeply ingrained their identities in CL to the degree where hyperbole is rechristened to incontestable facts. An endorsement for Bellarke is an obtrusive reminder of the not all-encompassing reception of their ship. A lack of positive sentiment is an attack on their OTP, elevated to an attack on their identity. Before long, it ascends to an alleged offense to their right to exist. The perpetrators of this evil against humanity are the enemy, and they must attack in kind, in defense of themselves.
Truthfully, I think it's sad, the connotation of human happiness wholly dependent on the outcome of a fictional liaison already terminated years ago. I'm not unaware of the marginalization of minorities, of the LGBT+ community, in media. I haven't buried my head in the sand to pretend there aren't horrible crimes committed against them. I don't pretend prejudice isn't rampant. When defense and education devolve into hatred and libel for asinine reasons, though, the line has been crossed. You don't get a free pass to hurt someone with your words over a damn ship war. No matter how hard you try to dress it up as righteous social justice, I assure you, you're woefully transparent.

I dont wanna be mean but I Have been rewatching lately and I realized that Clarke's live is tragic it is but Bellamy's more Fucked up
in many ways i agree with this mostly because i’ve been thinking about it since he died a lot.
and yes i do think clarke’s life is very tragic but what i do think also happened to her is that the SL itself punished her unnicessarily especially in the last season, in ways that...if you count all of eliza’s scenes, about 80% of them are her crying and it honestly got very very exhausting. even to watch. as good as she is and she is great, it gets repetitive. she sells it but you start wondering gd why?? you become indifferent at some point to it all.
that aside, i do agree because of a few major points.
bellamy’s never had a happy childhood.
of course we don’t know what his life was like before O.ctavia was born. i like to think that maybe there was a glimpse of hope there. i think and hope too that bob wanted his filipino heritige respect though it never was but in my headcanon land he had a filipino dad who loved him dearly and who died tragically after which things went very wrong. but i believe he was loved dearly.
yet canon and the writers i think tried to instill the idea that aurora slept with random men so neither his nor o’s father are known. however i do believe aurora must’ve loved him a lot when he was born and i think he was a mama’s boy before O was born and everything concentrated solely on her.
so yes, he’s had a very unhappy childhood. a childhood marked by mostly FEAR and that is no way for a child to live and whilst Clarke has had a tragic life we have seen her past and we know she had a family-a dad and a mom, a father who loved her dearly, she was clearly a dada’s girl, the apple of his eye, he understood her, they were connected, which is why she sees him so often in memories or when she is in situations where she almost *dies*. and as complicated as her relationship with her mother is, it’s clear abby’s love for her is very strong even if their relationship was strained by Jake’s passing.
so clarke had a family, she lived in Alpha where we know conditions were better and she was best friend with the chancellor’s son. i’d say up to the point where her father died things were probably pretty rosy.
meanwhile bellamy became a parent more or less at the age of seven. a child was placed in his hands in the way a mother passes a newborn to her husband, and he becomes responsible for a life that technically-
is not allowed to exist.
just let that whole part sink in cause that’s the tragedy of him.
he lived in absolute fear of the worst happening.  forced to become a guard so he could protect her, share rations with his forbidden sister so she could live and help his mother out.
then his worst fear happened.
because of HIMSELF!
the one moment he dared reach for happiness it was taken from him. and it killed his mom who he clearly loves very much and locked his sister who we know he loves beyond himself.
a year of absolutely lonliness, guilt-rideness and pain passes.
then he goes to earth and his sister who’s finally free decides to have a life of her own and split like every child does at some point, from her family. be free because she’s been locked up all her life and he’s left..confused?? doing irrational things, trying to control what he no longer can control.
trying to hold on to love.
because in all the pain and suffering he did have a family-his mom and his sister.
but now it’s gone.
then he grows to love and care for the 100. for clarke.
and he goes into a mountain to save them.
but instead ends up committing genocide.
meanwhile his sister runs off with a grounder (which...i have thoughts on o’s love life but i wont go there now).
and then he’s left alone by the one person he still had in his life. and let’s be real i love the blakes but they were never truly resolved. they came close to it in season 6 but it wasn’t truly done well. so i think it’s fair to say that from the moment he touches the ground, even though he does it for his sister-
he loses her.
and he only has clarke left.
but clarke leaves.
so he’s loveless, empty, broken and absolutely destroyed by the fact that he killed a mountain full of people some of whom were good and tried to save them.
he’s destroyed inside.
and then on and on-the pike manipulation, the massacre, more guilt, more pain. the death wave and a weightless loseless fight that bears no meaning but he tries he tries he goddamn tries
though he doesn’t know why, surely not for himself. for O? for clarke? for the others? for his people?
what is there left for him to do.
aurora blake raised no suiciders. no losers. he can’t kill himself as much as death seems alluring.
what i find the saddest is that he has no real love in his life. yes he has clarke and yes we know they were written as romantic but it was never canon canon so he doesn’t have this great epic love story that all the other characters have-clarke with L, o with Lincoln, raven with f/nn, jasper with maya, monty with harper, lastly john with emori which i think was the best written one.
and that is the tragedy indeed.
because he IS the character who is the MOST heart even at his *head*-est and yet he is denied love. he’s denied a great love story (again bellarke-aside here). he is DENIED his heart being loved the way it loves, he is denied the gentleness of a soft, kind, filled with extremes-ups and downs, or even challenges, love.
he’s denied it.
the heart is denied love.
i don’t count e/cho. im sorry but that just as clarke killing him was done purely out of spite. there was no real love there, no emotion, no romance. it was a time jump relationship just like his one with gina. he’s REFUSED a great love story.
he has it with clarke. but he’s denied actually going there too.
i find it sad because love spills out of him in waves, all of himself he gives out, all of his softness kindness, even his flaws, he lets out in the open and says this is me, i am not ashamed of myself. i may hate myself but i love.
and there’s no one to love him back.
and then in the end of course im saddest because we’ve seen the craziest shit on earth and he’s still denied understanding from his friends. but i wont go there because it hurts too much.
so yes clarke lost a lot. she lost L and she lost madi in a way and she lost her dad and her mom. but she’s had happiness in her life, she’s had a family, she’s had great love, she’s even had the cutesy teenage drama romance with f/nn and then a good love and then yes death and pain. she is separated from her friends, she is punished unnecessarily like he is too.
but she’s known it.
and she’s known the peace from those 6 years on earth. peace he craved and strived towards in the end. she’s had that with madi. whilst he’s spent that punishing himself over leaving her behind and once again trying to keep their people together in her abscence to honor her.
i’m sure he’s had happy moments. maybe glimpses. like bob said, glimpses of peace. maybe he’s had glimpses of happiness too. when he was baby boy and his mom picked him from his crib or his dad carried him arround or when he carried O around and talked to her. or when he was hugged by clarke.
but he should’ve had more.
he deserved more.

Note
Can you fix my most hated character from epic seven please, it’s fighter maya. She looks sooooooo horrible and my blood boils every time I see her but if not then uh can you fix Vivian? Also thank you for doin the lords word with the edits. I love epic seven and the cool characters so much but they ruin it every time with the comical over sexualization 😣 (have a good day!) thanks
Thank you so much! I'm really trying with these edits haha
I love these characters so much, they just need some TLC smh. I finished Vivian! And will hopefully get to Fighter Maya ASAP! Thanks for the request <3
