Joel Miller's head shakes ™️ (the last of them - pt 2)

Welp. That’s all of them!

Actually, not quite. There are a few subtle ones that were so fast and minute they wouldn’t show up enough to be worth making into a gif - but for the curious… it worked out to exactly 100 Joel Miller head shakes across the 9 episodes 😂 . They increased consistently as the season went on (poor ol Joel). 11 each in episodes 1, 2, and 3, 15 for episode 4, 17 in episode 5 and 6, (none in ep 7 and 8 💀 lol) and episode 9 we got 18!

Ep 46 Pt 1: Zorc’s Massive Low Hanging Fruit

We are getting very close! I don’t actually...remember how many episodes there were in this season but listen, It can’t possibly be more than 50 right?

Right?

Anyway, we’re starting off in the battle basement in Yami’s tomb. Who, of course has a battle basement installed right outside of his final resting place, just like how he would have wanted.

And it’s here that the form of Bakura that the dub is telling me is Ryou wants to kill his own classmate. Which, I’ll just point it out since a couple people mentioned it, apparently the manga did not do this nor did the original Japanese version. The dub just made this Ryou for giggles. We already know Bakura can split into evil pieces, this was not necessary. We also know that Ryou is sleeping on those painful steppies, so this doesn’t make much logical sense.

But like we’re watching the dub right now, so sorry, everybody, this is Ryou. Ryou on a bad day, I guess. Dark Ryou. Not to be confused with Shadow Ryou, who is...that other freaking guy.

Yugi just upset that he forgot to bring his dueling disk to a dream universe in the past or whatever. Must feel naked without that thing stinking up his left arm and making that school blazer all wrinkly. Bro is telling me that Yugi should have one really big arm, kind of like trogdor.

the one thing that does make sense with making this Ryou is a little bit of symbolic imagery. Ryou talks about how he doesn’t have friends anymore in the beginning of this arc, and we can assume it’s because he’s decided to step away from other people because of the ghost in his bean. In contrast, Yugi has all these friends he cursed to like him (woops), and for whom he just risked his whole life for, and for whom he didn’t learn the Pharaoh’s name that he needed in order to save all of mankind.

Which, for reals, Tea and Joey are such good buds, that he really did just end the world to save their ass, and that is pretty anime of him.

But Tea gets very nervous over whether or not Yugi was going to perma-die. It would be very awkward if he died, since he’s also the host of this puzzle which is she is currently stuck inside of. Though I’m not 100% on if it’s even possible for him to die here. Little bit of a chicken or the egg situation, which I may have brought up before.

But still, she’s worried about it.

Which is when Joey does a quick head count and go “WAIT WAIT"

Back at Kul Elna, everything is very quickly falling apart. Rocks are falling from the sky, Pharaoh is back at the capital with Seto and the other Seto, and Karim helllllllllllllla died last episode (or 2 episodes ago? I have such bad memory nowadays) so we’re just gonna leave his corpse in the barn and go.

sorry I just took in the incredible abs on this oversized chess piece that is Hassad. 

Why bother? Like for reals why bother?

I have so many questions about this random guy and his character design and they will not get answered. Apparently Dark Side of Dimensions dives into it as well as other unresolved issues from this season but like, that’s for another time. We will be watching that later, and at my rate it’ll be like 5 years from now but I swear...unless I caught covid a second (third?) time we will eventually get there and find out the deal of this...this freakin guy.

Meanwhile, our story boarders are not finished flexing. I think they really enjoyed this particular episode, with this really fun composition around Bakura here. They LOVE to shred scenery with Bakura on this carving, and there are so many good shots where it’s like a comic cover. I mean, look at this:

Damn that’s a good idea. This composition is fun. You got the curves from this...pokemon that I forgot the name of... you got him dead center all strong and rigid to contrast the curves. You got purple and green clouds. It’s fun. If y’all ever want to do the “draw this anime still but in your style” this is a good still. Good stuff.

And then Bakura peaces off--no idea where, and it doesn’t really matter since we have like so many Bakura’s at this point. Lets just assume he’s everywhere.

And with that, the ground gives way to the ZORC within.

This ultimate being, Zorc, who we’ve been talking up for so many episodes.

And that’s when we find out Isis also left out another crucial detail about Zorc:

So listen. We can say that the...neck...of the snake is coming out of his lower stomach. But also, they left it in shadow for a reason. 

The reason is, this episode is getting me flagged.

It occurred to me I don’t have to go for the low hanging fruit. I don’t have to. I can find a way around this. And I struggled. And I did whatever I, a full grown adult, could think to do. I thought to myself, I am a creative person, and I am inventive and I can write comedy well enough so it’s not just about poops and butts and dicks.

And then I gave up because of the number of times this thing is dead center on screen. And really, truly, I make a lot of low hanging jokes on this blog anyway so we’re just going to embrace Zorc for who he really is, both inside and outside.

And he is a slowly growing talking dragon shaped penis with legs.

Covered up by my joke towel in this scene I want you to know the snake just had it’s maws wide open to shout them down. It literally does only talk out of the dragon head on the bottom part of him.

Anyway, then Hassan jumps in front of the missiles zorc shoots from his crotch and well...he dies that way.

Death by firecrotch. This is like an immortal God meant to be the protector of the Pharaohs but you can kill him and the way how is disgusting.

There they go, back to the palace, which like, I guess is VERY close to Kul Elna, since Yami and Seto are currently vibing there right now.

Back at fight club, these two are still at it.

and then back at the funeral of the most romantic anime death of all time, Seto is still at it.

Seto, despite probably having to throw just SO MANY funerals for his tragic backstory is not very good at them. So right now he’s just distancing himself emotionally from literally everything going on around him by convincing himself this is all a very vivid hallucination.

Which it is. For once he is correct, this entire arc is a hallucination, but a hallucination with consequences. Which he is not used to. Hell he doesn’t see consequences when he’s not in a hallucination half the time. He’s like super rich.

Yami decides he did what he can, but he’s done with this freakin guy. I guess trying to reach through to Seto is a skill that only Yugi possesses, cuz Yami is just clear out of patience for this sociopath. Which is a shame, he usually loves this sociopath.

I laughed out loud at this cut to this horse’s ass and Seto’s reaction to being left behind from getting a ride the one time he was the one who needed a ride.

LMAO at the dub for adding that suspicious soil clump where a dead girlfriend probably was laying before.

but being real, this is another very nice shot, I didn’t cap it for vibes, and I really should have. Again, if you’re looking for a “draw this in your style” anime still challenge, this is another fun one. You got a juxtaposition of old and new. You got the storytelling of the dead girlfriend and trying to understand feelings you don’t understand because you were taught to never love. You got lovely ancient pillars. You got a clump of dirt that used to be a girl...

Like we may have dragged Seto’s ass back here, just to make him look cool and out of place in that coat as the wind sweeps by him. And that’s fine, I’ll accept that Seto this season may only be here for some vibes.

As he admires her slowly breathing (yes, breathing, thanks dub) he flashes back to that only time he every had a single conversation with this woman (a conversation they had, only because she thought he was someone else)

And off he goes, to look cool and probably do little else.

You did not even know how you got here, one second you got a call from Ignacio saying to come to Los Pollos Hermanos leaving you to drop everything due to your lover being back from his trip to Mexico. The next second you were in the office of the boss of Los Pollos Hermanos where he apologised for having to do this, to being out in the desert god knows where, standing under the scorching sun without a cloud in the sky. You were 100% sure that if you were destined to make it out of here alive you were going to get killed by skin cancer because of course today was the day you decided against sunscreen.

You enjoyed your silly little worrying over not wearing sunscreen as it helped to get your mind off of this astonishing situation you got yourself into. While you had no idea what was happening,  all you knew was that the situation called for you to shut up and act like nothing was out of the ordinary.

You knew Ignacio was into something ahhh… not quite legal due to his extensive range of accessible drugs laying around his house and the gun that he constantly had in his jacket which you’d always play with. Yet, you never asked or questioned why it was like that and in turn he never pried into your private life. That was the only rule or boundary you both had even though it was unspoken.

But you thought he was smart enough not to bring you into his fucking shit. Never set expectations because that just sets you up to have them crushed and this unfortunately had set up the theme for today.

Looking down you watched the love of your life all bloody kneeling in the dirt, a rectangle piece of duct tape was covering his mouth , for god knows what reason. You could not deny that even in this state he was still as godly as ever, his shirt covered in blood clung to his bulging biceps, the sleeves rolled up to his elbows showing off his perfectly sculptured forearm while the top three buttons of his shirt were undone leaving his top part of his chest exposed. You had to restrain yourself from coming up to him to run your hands up and down his chest.  The tough, bloody and slutty look you fell for.

The love of your life, you repeated in your head, was he really the love of your life ? Did you guys really love each other ? What was love ? Did love show its self in one way or many ways ? Maybe it was love even though it was sick and twisted, maybe not. Your mind not knowing how to categorise your relationship, every attempt led to a dead end.

You let out a subtle sigh, why did humans love to categorise things in tiny neat little boxes only to know it will result in numerous problems down the track ?

Thinking back about your relationship with him, you could not think of anything that brought you genuine happiness, joy or love… all it was, was fighting, jealousy and sex.

You and Ignacio would hold each other all sweaty and out of breath , the atmosphere would be heavy with the smell of sex, you would confess your undying love to him and promise to divorce your husband however, you’d still wake up early to make your husband breakfast and give in to his begs of wanting you to dance with him while he cooks. Ignacio would return your feelings and promise that he would kick Amber and Jo out for you yet, go home, drug them up and fuck them like he fucked you.

 And yet you both believed each other’s lies.

When you would become sick of the lies, you’d go to his house when he was not there, just for Amber and Jo to open the door, you would give them a big insidious grin while shoving a little zip lock bag that was in your hand into their faces so they could let you in. You would fuck around with them until Ignacio would come home so he would catch you with his girls. You implanted fear into his head, you implanted the idea that you would take his little play toys away from him, leaving him all alone.

And he did the same to you. He would plan a time for you to come over for a date, leaving the door accidentally open so you would walk in only to hear the noises of soft moans and harsh grunts, balls slapping against skin and the smell of a combination of drugs. Ignacio would loudly exclaim how they were such good girls and that he would never kick out his sex toys because they feel so good to fuck, no one compared to them. He implanted fear in your head, he implanted the idea that you would never be good enough for him let alone your husband, leaving you all alone. 

You both had the same fears, loneliness. Hence, why you both had backups of backups to give yourselves a sense of security. 

You both never treated Amber and Jo with kindness or respect, let alone like humans. You could not even remember regarding them as such, that bitch or those bitches were almost exclusively used to refer to them. Did taking away their humanity make you and Ignacio subconsciously feel better about the way you treated them ? They were vulnerable people who you both preyed on, exploiting their addictions and loneliness, so they could become your little pawns in your relationship. A little tug of war formed between you and Ignacio, and you used both the girls not caring how it would impact their mental health, their esteem, their over reliance on drugs or their fucking livelihood’s.

You always stopped yourself from reflecting back on how you treated Amber and Jo, but when you would find yourself thinking about them, you’d just snort a line, take a shot or take a hit so you could forget what an awful human being you were to them.

Could you even consider yourself a human being ?

You saw yourself in them, so you took it out on them, saying they were embarrassing, lonely and out of control but that was just you. You did everything and anything to belittle them so you could feel somewhat more in control of your life and that you were better than them, more worthy than them.

You judged them without ever getting to know them, when did you ever ask about their day and not if they had the drugs you fancied for the night.

Deep down you wished you never met this man, Ignacio.

Still not taking responsibility for your actions, huh?

When you guys ever did anything for each other, it was when the end goal was to make the other jealous the other hurt or the other angry.

Yet maybe there was love, the way you brushed his cheek with your thumb when he had a hard day, that was love ? If not, then why would you do that ? It was love, fucking his girls was love, you just wanted to show him that you were hurting, that you were better than those mindless addicts. Your love and worthiness were better than theirs combined or even times two.

He too in his last minutes alive thought the same as you, your relationship may have been a bit bumping. But I mean who’s isn’t ? He’d wash your hair as you complained about how needy and clingy your husband was for always wanting to be near you, joining in when you’d clean the house or always be over your shoulder when you cook to see if you needed anything. That is the type of things people do for each other when they are in love, they listen to their partners woes.

You thought about how love manifested in the relationship ? Surely sex, right ? Making love getting fucked it’s all the same. You fuck when you are in love, you make love when you are in love. Ignacio fucked you because he loved you and you let him because you loved him. 

But you were often curious on what constituted making love ? Was there really a difference between that and fucking ? Obviously, you made love with him as you guys were together but as you thought about it you found it increasingly hard to remember what it was like to make love to Ignacio… maybe it was because it was so good you forgot ? 

Maybe just maybe the little voice in the back corner of your mind whispered that it was because Ignacio wanted you, he created the façade of being sweet and charming until you were in his grasps, never able to leave. Stuck with a man who never cared about you beyond you being a new and different toy.

But realisation had the obsession to always arrive late so they could have their big and grand entrance allowing all the eyes to be on them.

A loud bang causing your ears to ring snagged you out of your thoughts, to only find Ignacio laying on the floor, gun in his hand and a hole in his head that was continuously oozing out his blood. The smell of dried blood mixed with his fresh blood infiltrated your nose.

You could not keep it in, you just could not, you had to laugh, a full belly laugh ripped through you as for a second you had thought he would get you out of this mess his mess, ah expectations such a silly thing.  But of course, the selfish boy was selfish until the end. He feared being alone til the very end, so he acted with all the power he had to make sure it did not happen, in turn leaving you alone.  

Destiny will have it that you will be alone, perhaps as an accumulation of your sins.

Just noticing you now, due to your inappropriate laughing, Juan Bolsa turned to Fring sounding unpleased,  ‘who is that ?’.

Fring looked at you with a blank face then back at Bolsa ‘that is Ignacio’s partner and we have grounds to believe they helped with the murder of Lalo Salamanca’.

Bolsa huffed ‘are these so called grounds, enough to kill an innocent person like them’ pointing at you.

Frings voice was light like he was talking to his close friends, ‘it is up to you, I just wanted to provide the Salamanca’s an extra treat due to the incriminating accusations that I have endured to show my agency I have in serving this family’.

Something told you this was absolute bullshit, the slight coldness in his tone - that no one else seemed to pick up -  exclaimed that he did not give a flying crap about serving this so-called family,  the way this Fring man carried himself screamed I do not serve anyone but me, he seemed far too smart to do someone else’s bidding. You were almost positive that this Fring man was planning something, something big and that this Lalo Salamanca dude was just the beginning of his reign.

The way they were talking was not like they were figuring out whether they should kill you or not but instead like they were planning a party for you and were casually discussing what kinds of foods to get for it.

In this moment you had no idea what to feel. Ignacio left you alone to endure whatever dumb shit this was, it did not make sense, was this the consequence of loving him ?

But Bolsa did not reply.

And Fring just turned away and walked back to the car, Victor and Tyrus following suit, you however, had not one fucking idea what to do so you just copied them.

For a second you were hopeful that you were being let go, you were already eager at the thought of starting anew, unfortunately, your fate was sealed as soon as you heard a ringing of a bell from behind, sending a shiver down your spine, slowly you turned your head around to see what was happening. Within seconds of the bell ringing, one of the twins had whipped out their gun and before you knew it, a tear began to crawl itself down your face, as time had been the slowest you had ever experience, slower than when you would plank for a minute. In what felt like slow motion,  bullet after bullet came whizzing towards you, aiming between your eyes.

While in every waking moment for the past year or so you thought of Ignacio, this time you did not. This time you thought about your husband who was probably waiting for you to come home, so as soon as you would walk in through the door, he knew it was time to put on some music to cook to but like always he would get lost in the music by dancing to whatever sweet melody he decided to play, his face would be full of joy as he would turn to you and force you to join. You thought about how he would stay up until you’d come back from fucking Ignacio believing your lies, just to make sure you were alright so that you both could fall asleep together as he held you whispering sweet nothings into your ear. 

Your last moments were spent on you worrying about how he will stay up all night waiting for you not knowing you will be dead in a matter of milliseconds, buried in the middle of nowhere depending if they cared enough to dig you a grave, to know he was never going to get closure on why you never came home.  Back to him. It was your husband who you only ever truly loved not Ignacio. Your sweet, joyful, loving husband was not that needy or clingy person you described him as, but in lieu was a person who just wanted to make sure you were not lonely by ensuring you were happy and loved every day 24/7,  only to throw it away for something that meant nothing. Only because you wanted to know what it felt like to have such a dark and dangerous secret that could destroy your life. Only because you wanted to feel the thrill of lying to someone who cared about you and thought you felt the same.

You loudly laughed - like someone just said the funniest joke - at the realisation that;

it was death that brought you such clarity.

The light at the end of the stupid tunnel when you died was not you going to heaven or being reborn, coming out the vaginal canal but instead a one last ‘fuck you, here is all the fucked-up shit you did, now reconcile with your stupidity and be enlightened’.

Dauntingly, this newfound wisdom you had freshly experienced was only just the beginning of the end.

What felt like a hot iron rod going through your head disappeared within the second you felt it, leaving you to crumple into the dirt below you, the earth greedily absorbing you to use you for nutrients.

Everyone and everything must follow their designated life cycle, it is impossible to avoid.

Swallow the Sun primer

For @devoured-by-shadows but anyone who's interested in discovering the Finnish doom masters that are STS are welcome to read! The post's addressed to them because it began as an ask and I went overboard Like I do hahaha

Swallow the Sun, shortened to STS, are a LEGENDARY doom metal band from Finland. They formed in 2000, created by master of Gloom, Beauty & Despair Mister Juha Raivio himself, composer and guitarist who will rip your heart right out of your chest and leave you in a puddle of tears with the beauty of the crushing tales he weaves. Within a year they had Matti Honkonen on bass and the absolutely extraordinary Mikko Kotamäki on vocals to form the core lineup which has remained stable since 2001. Drums and second guitar have changed a bit over the years (notably they had Kai Hato behind the kit from 2009 to 2015, #bestEraOfSTS. You may know Hato better from Wintersun, or Nightwish nowadays. He's one of my all time drum idols and, no joke, one of the softest, kindest, most gentle souls I've ever met in my life). STS's got the same lineup since 2018.

I will admit that Kotamäki's vocals are somewhat of an acquired taste, it did take me a while to get used to it too, but give it the time it deserves. He has cleans and screams to offer and once it hits, it's transcendental. Once you'll fall in love, this man will ensnare you and his voice will own your soul. He's definitely refined his vocal technique too, the song you heard No Light, No Hope is from 2007, he was still pretty raw then. I like the rawness but it is less accessible than how polished he sounds now. I don't see any reason why his recent vocals would not hit the mark for you, knowing what I know of your stellar music taste.

Through their career they have released 8 full length studio albums with the occasional EP and single release dotted throughout. Legit, they do not have a single bad album. They have rather different albums, and you will vibe with an era more than with another, most likely. It's up to you to find where STS clicks for you, which type of haunting menalcholy do their grip and won't let go of. As long as you are into doom metal and slow, melancholic, longing, painful, mournful 5-15 minutes songs, they will hit for you. Their lyrical universe is stunning, and once you're sucked into their sound, there's a non-negligible chance they will become a go-to band to cry to when you need to get it out. I know that's what they are for me. You just need to be in a mood for sad shit.

Keeping in my mind that my actual recommendation is "just listen to the entire discography from start to finish because it's 100% worth it and flawless perfection", I also recognize my bias and how unrealistic that is XD So I shall now proceed to go album by album in chronological order (which is also the order I recommend discovering them in because their progress is very satisfying to hear) and rec some songs to start your Swallow the Sun journey with!

Off of 2003's The Morning Never Came, I suggest: Deadly Nightshade Swallow (Horror Pt. 1) my favorite STS song because of personal reasons and attachment

From 2005's Ghosts of Loss, I suggest: The Giant Fragile

From 2007's Hope I suggest: Don't Fall Asleep (Horror Pt. II)

2008's Plague of Butterflies EP is one of the most ambitious, gut wrenching and honestly seminal projects in doom metal's history. It's a 35 minutes song that is a must listen in any metalhead's journey. Sit down, grab the lyrics, dim the lights and feel the beauty and sadness of one of the most wonderful and painful musical tales to ever come out of the genre. Unbeatable shit. My 2nd favorite STS song.

Off of 2009's New Moon, I suggest: Lights on the Lake (Horror Pt. III)

Off of 2012's Emerald Forest and the Blackbird, which is where I feel you'll start to hear the shift into STS's "modern sound" so this may be where you start to like them more, I suggest: Labyrinth of London (Horrors pt. IV) my 4th favorite STS song, the 3rd will come later This Cut is the Deepest Hate, Lead the Way

2015's Songs from the North is quite the outlier project in this band's discography because it's a triple album. It's legit 3-4 hours of music. Each album, I, II and III have a distinct sound and pull from different inspirations: you have a heavier metal one, an acoustic one and a deep slow doom 10+ minutes-per-song one. It's a big ass mountain to climb cause there is so much material here and it's not been trimmed. I sincerely feel like they could have made a single 12-13 tracks album with the three discs, idk. I don't suggest starting here at all, this is more of the deep dive album at the end of the journey if you really love them: Lost & Catatonic

Which leads us to the masterpiece of Swallow the Sun's discography, 2019's When a Shadow is Forced into the Light. Listen. There is a lot of history behind that album. A very painful personal history in Juha Raivio's life. I could recount the whole tale one day, because as STS fans we lived through it in a small way. With all the distance in the world, it wrecked me. 4 years later it still makes me very, very emotional. Long story short, Raivio's wife Aleah Starbridge, the Nightingale, beautiful soul, beautiful flamme, for whom we still hold the torch alight, passed away and this is the album of his grief. I think even without knowing the whole story, the album speaks for itself. This is one of my top 5 albums of all time. All genres, all bands, all music altogether, this album is one of the most beautiful, most difficult listens I have ever heard and it changed me deeply. This album completely changed me. There's a before and an after. Me and my father made our first listen of this album together on the road when it came out. Mw dad's a man from the 50s so you know he Does Not Cry, I have seen this man cry probably 5 times in my entire life, and one of those was us listening to this album for the first time. We had to pull over to the side of the road so we wouldn't get in an accident and we just stayed there, listened, held each other and sobbed together. I will never forget that memory. So as far as songs go? Just listen to the entire album. For real. Take the hour out of your life. It's worth it, trust me. When you're in the mood to take it obviously. Every song here is pure musical perfection. Stone Wings is my 3rd favorite STS song, but it deserves to hit in the context of the album. Do me and yourself a favor and experience the entire thing as it was meant to. Start of the playlist here
