Katy Manning - in her first ever screen role, and credited as Katie - makes awful coffee and has a good nose at some industrial action, in Softly Softly: Task Force: Standing Orders (1.8, BBC, 1970)
#fave spotting#katy manning#jo grant#softly softly: task force#doctor who#classic doctor who#standing orders#alan plater#bbc#the awful coffee thing is referenced several times in dialogue for some reason‚ it isn't just me being a dick#katy's part here is fairly negligible at a glance‚ but this is a fascinating episode of SSTF. I've found this first series deeply uneven so#far‚ beginning with a couple of brilliant‚ razor sharp scripts from series creator Elwyn Jones‚ but followed by a few really duff#eps by Robert Barr‚ who seems to have seized the procedural aspect of the series and clung to it so his episodes depict fairly dull#routine work for the characters. my heart jumped‚ then‚ when the opening credits for this episode announced Alan Plater as the writer#Plater was truly one of our greatest screenwriters and deserves to be mentioned alongside Rosenthal and Potter (but rarely is‚ perhaps#because he contributed so much to genre work or bc he did so much freelance for other series like this‚ rather than concentrating on his#own original creations all the time). this is well before Beiderbecke made his name‚ but he was already an established writer and so#presumably well known for the socialist views that inform much of his work (even freelancing). doubly surprising then‚ considering this#episode follows on immediately from 1.7 The Aggro Boy‚ an Allan Prior script that's interesting as a document on attitudes and approaches#to football hooliganism in 1970‚ but which has a highly Conservative bent and contains dialogue which seems to support increased powers of#policing‚ the return of national service‚ and a general despair with 'modern society'. Prior's script couldn't be further from Plater's#beliefs‚ but to his credit this episode (concerning labour disputes and unofficial strikes) does its damndest to remain neutral (mostly#through the figure of Norman Bowler's Insp Hawkins who will not be drawn into taking sides). i suppose it's testament to Plater's#professionalism; he was after all a guest writer on a mildly conservative cop show‚ not to mention writing for the BBC (always at pains to#appear politically neutral). his characters are varied‚ with good and bad on both sides of the debate; there are bad managers and trouble#makers on the picket‚ as well as sympathetic bosses and earnest union men. if Plater does allow his leftwing bias to show (and it's only#briefly) it's in scenes where Hawkins is goaded by his superiors into betraying his own sympathies: something he explicitly refuses to do#so where does Katy come in? what does her character represent? if anything i think she represents the disinterested masses#the idle onlookers; her secretary character is not directly involved in the shop disputes and spends most of the episode watching the men#from the window with half curiosity and half boredom. and she does it superbly!

Over saturation of BL ships
This post came to be after I watched a pilot trailer today and then yt suggesting another pilor trailer. I had seen that one already but what sparked my interests was the views of said trailer. And then my mind went to GMMTV.
Mandee VS GMMTV
Tumblr media
So we got Your Sky the series. After 4 weeks it got 1.7 mil views. I was surprised. I mean it's a pretty generic storyline and it's a new ship ThomasKong. If you watched DMD friendship the reality you already know them a bit but otherwise completely new.
Tumblr media
Now GMMTV's highest watched pilot trailer is The Heart killers released a month ago and stars the pretty famous ships FirstKhao and JoongDunk. Despite it's not seen much yet story line and the established ships it only managed to get 1.3 mil views so far.
Tumblr media
Then there's Mandee with Khemjira the series. Original story line but again features a new ship KengNamping. Yet it managed to get 1.3 mil views already in just 11 days. Which is the same amount as The Heart Killers got after a month. And with populair ships.
Tumblr media
Then last but not least Perfect10 Liners. A generic BL story line but packed with some of the more populair GMMTV ships. Yet it only managed to get 1 mil views after a month!
Now I want to throw in one more example which is not from the companies just mentioned
Tumblr media
My Stand-In from YYDS. Fresh, most likely one time couple with an unique story line. And look at the views for the first ep! 55 mil!
Are we now more interested in new faces then seeing the same couples over and over again? Except for diehard shippers? Are fresh faces starting to overpower the established ships and their marketability? Can companies no longer throw in established ships just to sell a basic story line? Are they going to have to put in more effort?
It looks like the trends in BL world are beginning to change - and I am here for it - let us see where this new direction is taking us.

Dylan O’Brien Sets ‘Twinless’ With James Sweeney Directing & Starring; Republic Pictures Takes Global On Three Point Capital & David Permut Production
Tumblr media
EXCLUSIVE: Dylan O’Brien is set to headline in James Sweeney‘s dark comedy Twinless, which the latter wrote and will also star in. Republic Pictures has taken global rights to the movie. Cameras are currently rolling on the movie in Portland, OR. O’Brien will executive produce.
The pic follows two young men who meet in a twin bereavement support group. An unlikely bromance develops between them. Twinless follow Sweeney’s directorial debut, Straight Up, which notched the filmmaker a Best First Screenplay nom at the 2021 Independent Spirit Awards.
Three Point Capital is financing the film with Ali Jazayeri, David Gendron and Liz Destro also serving as EPs.
Twinless is produced by Academy Award nominated producer David Permut and Permut Presentations (Hacksaw Ridge, Face/Off) whose most recent Netflix movie, Rustin, garnered Colman Domingo a Best Actor Oscar nomination.
Miky Lee (Parasite) Vice Chairwoman of CJ and who most recently executive produced the Oscar nominated film Past Lives, serves as EP.
Permut Presentations Director Of Development Alex Astrachan co-produces.
Permut said, “I was absolutely knocked out by James’ first film Straight Up and was determined to work with him. I immediately responded to the originality and provocative concept of Twinless. The dark comedy depicts complex characters in such an irreverent, emotional and hysterical way. The chemistry between Dylan, who portrays the role of identical twin brothers, opposite James’ character is absolutely combustible.”
O’Brien’s most recent film is the independent feature Ponyboi, in which he plays a villainous pimp and small-time drug dealer, recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. He will next be seen in the upcoming films SNL 1975 (from director Jason Reitman) as Dan Aykroyd, Caddo Lake (from the writing-directing team of Logan George and Celine Held, and producer M. Night Shyamalan), and Anniversary (a thriller co-starring Diane Lane, Kyle Chandler, Zoey Deutch and Phoebe Dynevor). The $1.7 billion grossing star is well-known to audiences from his work in The Maze Runner franchise, as well as the hit MTV series Teen Wolf.
Permut also recently produced the Paramount+ series hit, Lawman: Bass Reeves from Taylor Sheridan, which stars SAG nominee David Oyelowo. His upcoming high priority slate includes Being Heumann written and directed by Academy Award winner Sian Heder (CODA) at Apple, Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris’ (Little Miss Sunshine) film The Invite, and Face/Off II at Paramount, the sequel to Permut’s 1997 hit film, to be directed by Adam Wingard.
Sweeney is repped by UTA, 2AM and Brecheen Feldman Breimer Silver and Thompson. O’Brien is repped by WME, Principal Entertainment, and Lichter, Grossman, Nichols, Feldman, Rogal, Shikora & Clark and Permut is repped by John Tishbi at Pearlman & Tishbi.
Three Point Capital, established in 2009, is a financier and service provider in the film, television, and commercial industries. They have financed over 400 films, including The Butler, Clerks III and the Oscar-winning Manchester by the Sea. They most recently provided funding for the upcoming Michael Keaton starrers Know Goes Away and Goodrich, the Nicholas Cage starrer Longlegs, the Tina Fey/Jon Hamm comedy Maggie Moore(s) and the recent Sundance premiere Rob Peace.
Paramount Global Content Distribution is revitalizing the former Republic Pictures label, originally founded in 1935. The newly branded acquisition label will leverage Paramount Global’s vast worldwide distribution channels, across home entertainment and third-party distribution platforms to distribute a wide range of acquired films. Republic Pictures is an acquisition-only label under Paramount Pictures.

do you have headcanons for the two sillies eye conditions. Why do they need glasses, what are the specifics (I don’t know anything about them)
i do actually!
for simon, his glasses dont go over his eyes and he doesnt need to really like see out of them, so im like pretty sure theyre some kind of reading glasses. or something.. or maybe like a sometimes glasses where he just needs them sometimes? basically , hes not blind enough to be blind as a bat, but he does need them because (if i remember correctly i may be wrong and stupid) hes been shown to fix his glasses to look at something. something though, thats built on complete head canon and not built with any factual evidence expect for the fact im delusional but i think his eyes are sensitive to light.. mostly bc in like two eps his glasses were accidentally a lil darker (kinda like glasses that arent sun glasses but dim light) i have like no reason to believe this but uh.. yeah
for betty, she’s probably blind as hell. for one shes never seen without her glasses ever, so its glasses that she has to wear to see. also, her glasses are quite big and if im not mistaken very thick. so she probably is really blind for them to be that thick. i wouldn’t go as far to say she cant see ANYTHING, but like me, she cant see a hand right infront of her face without getting blurry.
my head canons for their glasses strength is
betty- negative 5 or 6. for you to make sense of this kleos, im like a negative 4 so think a lil bit than me. she also probably got glasses at a very young age (like early elementary, kindergarten or 1st grade maybe?) and probably got bullied for it.
simon- positive 1.7 probably. i wouldn’t say a positive 2, but its definitely enough where he needs glasses 90% of the time to see up close. and of course his eye sensitivity to light.

in the comments of lp episode 387 exiled by minecraft there's speculation as to whether etho's sudden and disastrous ability to travel 64 blocks in the overworld per 1 block in the nether (instead of the normal 8:1) is a glitch, or him trolling us, and additionally whether he got trolled by a commenter. i am here to settle the debate for once and for all.
in the intro to the episode, etho spends time messing around because he's totally out of ideas for the day. he still has the 115 levels from the previous episode and decides to go look for an ice spikes biome a viewer had told him about a while ago because his ice tray is (probably) broken due to biome changes. but he gets sent to 22,400 -88,000 instead and has to kill himself to get home.
can't find the comment again but someone alleged he admitted to trolling or maybe taking advantage of a glitch he'd already known about, but i can find no such tweet (just the automated one linking to the episode on upload day).
Tumblr media
this is true; MC-56799 was resolved in snapshot 14w32a, a month and a half after etho's episode. some commenters reported similar glitches, although at least one is a separate bug related to eating/sleeping while entering nether portals which causes you to teleport to the overworld's coordinates in the nether.
funnily enough, both MC-56799 and its merged ticket MC-56804 link to etho's ep 387 as proof. the only other video footage uses Etho's seed and the exact same coordinates as in his LP episode, so it wasn't etho's newfound video editing skills that are the cause. (it also means that etho and his viewers are pretty much the sole reason the bug got fixed when it did.)
unfortunately, I've found no footage of a 64x nether travel glitch that isn't using etho's seed and specific coordinates; if this ever happened to you during 1.7 or its snapshots, i'd love to know because it's weird as hell.
Tumblr media
lack of other situations causing the glitch makes it hard to tell, but this theory is compelling especially. etho says that a viewer told him there was an ice spikes biome there, so if he did get the coords from a viewer that person was either trolling with the glitch or trying to help.
it turns out there was an ice spike biome in etho's seed in 1.7 at the correct overworld coordinates for the portal he builds, as pointed out by someone in the comments.
Tumblr media
anyway, it turns out that etho really didn't secretly develop immaculate acting skills but it was one big coincidence. i'd love to see who told him about the ice biome but god only knows how many episodes prior that might've been or even if it was on the LP and not another series.
if etho prunes his world download chunks, this one survived perhaps because he revisited and lingered trying to figure out what the hell happened, so you can (allegedly) teleport to 22,400 -80,000 and see the remains for yourself.
thanks for reading this extra-long, extra-niche episode of ethomythbusting.
this is the most interesting thing to me about the glitch, that it may be related to issues with glass panes rather than coordinates - but i simply don't have the time to load up pre-1.8 snapshots just to test a bunch of random nether portals at different coordinates etc. when the bug is fixed. i just love discontinued features.

thoughts on The Last Of Us episode two, roughly as it happens in the ep:
[thoughts on: 1.1 | X | 1.3 | 1.4 | 1.5 | 1.6 | 1.7 | 1.8 | 1.9]
— another episode, another mycologist! this professor is dignified and puzzled and it's such a strange change from the postapoc action of the previous episode. I'll be glad to see some blanks filled in though.
— the mounting tension and knowing fear in the examination scene is intense, and the actors are showing it brilliantly. there's a lot of discomfort, too, in the candid display of a corpse that still looks so whole and healthy - before the pandemic gets so bad that no-one can hope for a decent burial, back when it still raises serious questions to see someone with a bullethole in their forehead.
— the moment when someone who knows exactly how scared they should be loses their composure and gets the fuck out of there? that's the moment you know to be really afraid.
— she is just a professor - not military, not in a specialty (at least I think) that devotes as much thought to pandemics as others do, and she is scared. she's on a nice domestic sofa holding a teacup and saucer and she's visibly uncomfortable even thinking about what she knows.
— we already know how this is gonna go. it shouldn't be so affecting to learn that they've lost track of the first people infected. it probably should be so terrifying, actually, to see the people in charge admitting they're not on top of things.
— "bomb."
— yeah, that was a hell of a choice.
— "start bombing. bomb this city, and everyone in it."
— I'm looking over the scene again to get the quotes right, and paying more attention to the side characters 'cos @trivalentlinks mentioned enjoying them in this show, and gosh, yeah. these two are both so nakedly scared - the fear of someone who knows they can't do anything, and the fear of someone who has to anyway - and it's horrible.
— and I have to wonder. if they'd taken her advice sooner, could the pandemic have been prevented? how would she have been remembered, if they did? (how would the country have been judged by the rest of the world?) she's an expert and she's terrified and she's willing to doom a city, including herself and her family, to save the rest of the world, and it would be so easy for her to be framed as a monster.
— heavy stuff, folks. we're nine minutes in and my brain is humming.
— and her bravery, and her humanity, and her fear; and her request not to spend any more time explaining exactly why they're doomed but rather to let her spend her last hours with her family.
— cue gorgeous gross fungus growth intro. a bad time to be eating noodles and a worse time to realise that the camera's slowing down on something suddenly recognisable as a skull.
— I recognise the tests aren't quite the same, but this really seems like a crap world to have a stroke in.
— if we needed confirmation that joel didn't plan to punch that guard, here it is. how afraid and out of control must you be to fracture something in your own hand without stopping? how uncomfortable must that loss of control be for him?
— tess' move here, where she talks to ellie like an adult, is interesting. I've seen scenes like that before that felt like a threat, or like an adult refusing to take responsibility that they should - and this is both of those things, but it doesn't feel like it. it feels like a genuine attempt to get the information they need and give ellie the information she needs to make a good choice. but I don't know if that's just tess' strange brand of tricky honesty again.
— I do like it though. because the options are joel and tess being harsh and callous behind ellie's back, or it's joel and tess being harsh and callous and giving ellie a chance to know about it and help make their decisions. as much as she should be protected anyway.
— ellie's "if she so much as twitches..." "[strangled zombie sounds]" joke here is both very stupid and entirely justified
— "well it's the long way or the we're fucking dead way." "well I vote long way, just based on that limited information." oh tess and ellie are fun <3
— overgrown cities look so cool though.
— how weird must it be to climb over long-dead cars? they used to be something, a part of everyone's lives, and now they're just scenery. part of their old world still right there beside them but so far away.
— ellie: "so there aren't super-infected that explode spores on you?" tess, totally relaxed: "shit, I hope not."
— whoever decided that infected cry out, fox-like, in the distance, I salute you. there may also be a rude gesture involved.
— genuinely scarier that it was far away and just one cry, that they've been okay so far but they're still wary and still have to keep moving. I think they're not scared enough that that was a hunting cry. so it's just... a thing infected do, sometimes.
— oh. oh that's kind of a sad thought.
— JAUNTY MYSTERY SOUNDS ON A PIANO
— JAUNTY PIANO FROG
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
— I am in love, I am enchanted with our frog friend, I actually happy-stimmed a little. nothing in this is going to beat piano frog friend for me.
— "you're a weird kid." "you're a weird kid."
— this very believable idea of a generation of kids who learned about things like hotels from books, the way I learned about boarding schools. it's sweet. it's strange.
— ellie stroppily taking joel's hand and letting it go quickly after; joel glancing down at it, bloody-knuckled still, slightly broken still - it's a contrast. there's so much angst in the hands and the things they do and are capable of.
— I don't know if ellie learned this kind of grown-up smalltalk from books too but I do love her attitude
— the writhing rippling bodies, holy shit
— THEY'RE A NETWORK. HOW LOVELY. sarcastically but also genuinely that's kind of lovely. and I dig that tess' explanation both shows that and takes the time to make sure ellie understands the danger.
— sidenote but I keep going oooh at tess' hair because it's so nice to actually see a woman going grey, it's really pretty
— joel please don't touch the cordyceps. yes this is good and useful information to have about the fungus drying up but it's also DEEPLY GROSS
— I really don't like the grown-ups not knowing what's up or what killed a dude
— I've seen the odd spoiler on here, right? mostly from the games. and I haven't heard of tess. I'm not sure she's gonna survive like I am about the other two. and that means I am at several times wondering if she's going to die here.
— I HATE THIS. I hate this a lot. at some point during this extended terror scene I had to pause to call my friend a bastard and also put socks on so my feet didn't feel as vulnerable. did I mention I'm bad with horror
— the "if you panic, they'll hear you, so don't panic" situation is fucking evil. I was previously unaware this could extend to "load your gun quietly or else you're dead."
— they're clicking. they're fucking clicking. they're blind and they're clicking I REALLY DON'T WANT THESE TO HAVE ECHOLOCATION. PLEASE.
— you know how shooting rabid animals in the head can aerosolise the infection. I wish I wasn't thinking about that.
— I looked up the tess-taping-her-ankle thing and found half the comments were ppl who were also puzzled and half were like "duh, she sprained her ankle, are you even paying attention?" so probably that's a genuine treatment for sprains I'd just never heard about.
— the almost desperate way she told joel to just take this win? yeah, I think she might not be okay.
Tumblr media
— joel checking his watch. the poor bastard. I think looking out over the city and talking to ellie felt a little too familiar there.
— tess hurrying into the building and dragging ellie in front of her? yeah, she's panicking. I do think she wants to get this done before she starts really showing symptoms.
— "I never ask you for anything, not to feel the way I felt-" fuck
— this feels like a lower ratio of infected to story than most zombie stories. they travelled an entire city, went to great pains to avoid them, encountered two, and two of their three people got bitten. it's an interesting change.
— AND AS SOON AS I SAY THAT. THERE'S A FUCKING STAMPEDE.
— "save who you can save." okay, this right there? tess knows him very well. 'cos that's been his strategy from the moment this started. and she's giving him that push, I think, so he can snap back into that mode and actually leave her there to die. or so he'd find it easier to do.
— this is fucking horrible.
— I have never been so scared of a faulty lighter. what's scary, what's really scary here? is the thought that she's going to die not on her own terms, that she's not going to be able to play the last card she has to play, that she's not going to die relatively quickly but would instead be ripped apart.
— ...or kept alive as part of the cordyceps network. I think that's what the "kiss" was about - the way the fungus always seems to sprout out of the mouth in the later stages, the proximity to the brain, her maybe being recognised as infected but not yet connected to the others, which is a thing the others can fix. it's a watsonian explanation, at least. it's horrible.
— but she gets to play the last card she has to play. made of steel, to the end. if I were wearing a hat I'd be taking it off.
— last time they had an encounter with infected, two of their three got bitten. they can't risk that happening again. not with the likelihood that joel's going to be even more protective now, with delivering ellie safely his only goal, and still his only way to get to tommy. they are going to have to be so careful. and that's going to be interesting to see.

so my grandpa loves vikings, vikings valahalla and barbaren, so i told him he should watch the last kingdom
here are some of his thoughts from watching season one so far:
(these are mostly from ep 1.7, but he's on 1.8 now)
- the christians are made to look stupid and he thinks that's incredibly funny (specifically ab that scene where they pray that edward will be alright while iseult and uthred are actually doing sth to save his life)
- he thinks alfred is a pretty shit king and is annoying
- i'm pretty sure he likes uthred? keeps saying that it's unfair that he's literally doing everything for alfred but not getting anything in return
- he's an aethelwold hater (when i told him he was gonna have to put up with alfred for a few more seasons and the next king wasn't gonna be much better he got very concerned that it was aethelwold)
- he's very invested, literally asked my mum if she could already tell him if and what he has to help with for dinner preparations sp he can fit it into his very busy schedule (aka watching tlk all day)

Aggretsuko (Ep #1.1, 1.5, 1.7, 2.2, 2.5)
Aggretsuko is a pretty tame and charming slice of life anime. You’ve most likely heard of this show because it's kinda like The Office of anime, in the sense that just a bunch of non-avid anime watchers have seen it and self proclaimed themselves as quirky and different. If you take away the “basic” association with this show, you'll actually find something that brings up a couple of laughs. The show follows Retsuko, a 25 year old woman working at an accounting office job. She is a mostly reserved and quiet person who is trying to get by, make money, get married, and retire. The usual, tired employee trope. Living up to the trope, the boss is this very angry, unfair, and otherwise bad person who overworks and harasses employees. Retsuko is made fun of for being a woman, called incompetent, and overworked heavily, resulting in her usually tired personality that just wishes to get married to end the vicious cycle.
A prominent theme shown in the show is the idea of the woman in the workplace. Women are often critiqued, called out for “not being as good as men” in the show, and expected to be perfect in order to simply avoid harassment. This is evident through Ton and Retsuko’s relationship. His verbal comments on everything she does is purely due to the fact that she is a woman. The rest of the male workers seem to get treated pretty neutrally, but since Retusko is a timid lady, she is targeted unjustifiably (if there ever is any justification for this) for harassment. This shows the struggle women have gone through in a world that used to idealize the separation between workplace culture and women. The breaking of these boundaries may seem like common sense now, but there are often those opposed to this idea and who see a difference in power solely due to sexuality and gender identity.
Another issue addressed is the idea of what it means to be a woman. Retsuko loves death metal karaoke because it's a way for her to express her frustrations with the world. It's who she is and it is a form of expression she likes. There is no shame in having an interest in any form of media (given it’s legal of course) but there have been many barriers put up by society imposing gender norms. As a result, Retusko feels as if she cannot show that side of herself to anyone because it's not lady-like. This is a massive issue that I have always struggled with as well. There are many people, often of the older generation, saying how certain acts, interets, gestures, and even words are exclusively for a gender binary. This is not the case anymore as our society, people, and means of differentiating between people have changed and evolved. We no longer should see people as either fitting one mold or another, but instead allow anyone to like anything, free of ridicule. If a girl likes death metal music, that's perfectly fine, just as it would be okay if a boy loved watching My Little Pony (this is an entire rabbit hole btw). Nevertheless, Retsuko shouldn't feel ashamed.
A final quick topic I want to bring up is Japanese work culture. I’ve talked about it several times but the office setting really makes the idea of Japan having a rigorous work culture evident. Workers like Retusko get to their jobs early in the morning and grind all day, at times until like 9pm, showing how all encompassing a job there can really be. You have long hours, high volumes of work, and no time for recreation nor the participation in any daytime activities like sports, hobbies, or anything of the sort. Japan has a salaryman mentality where constant work is considered the norm and the devotion of one’s entire life to their jobs is expected. I find this demeaning for people as it prevents them from not only enjoying the pleasantries of life, but also makes people more depressed and less eager to learn and work, wasting the primes of their lives under constant stress (after already experiencing even more stress during school and college which is no walk in the park).
