Hey Kathryn,

A little bit ago you posted something about Eoin Macken making a fanfic like what was done with SPN. Is this his mysterious Merlin project he’s been hinting about? Do you happen to know anything more about it? Theories? I’ve been dying to know anything.

All I know about Eoin Macken’s Merlin project is the teasing hints he drops on twitter, which eventually make their way here.

(I don’t directly interact with Twitter, or Facebook, or Instagram, or TikTok. One social media timesuck is enough).

But if we’re talking theories…

Well. Yes. I have those.

So we know that Eoin writes scripts, and we know that Tom and Eoin have created a film together in the past, and we know that Bradley and Tom and Eoin and Adetomiwa are still in contact, because they were on that fundraiser together and they had lunch in London etc.

We know Katie has been to Colin’s plays, and Colin has been in contact with Ms. Troughton. (I’m not certain about Angel’s interactions, and I complement her for being able to keep her private life so private. Well done, m’lady.)

We also know that all the Merlin actors are extremely aware of how much the Merlin fandom still supports them, and many of the performers have spoken frequently about how grateful they are for the support, and for having Merlin in their lives, to boost their careers. So they love the fandom and they love the show and they loved working together — mostly.

So my theory? Based on just that information?

I think that Eoin has an idea for a story, or maybe even a full script written, and he’s trying to get the band back together and Make The Thing, with financial backers to do it, involving the busy schedules of all the Merlin alums.

I’m not sure whether it’s a “Fix Gwaine Being Dead” canon-era thing with Bradley in voiceover (much more likely), or a “Bring Arthur Back” modern thing, as in season 6 (more difficult).

Even if it’s the easier route, there’s a lot of challenges. Doing any kind of Merlin project would mean Eoin can convince Colin to go back to a project he’s done before, which he has vocally said he doesn’t do as an actor, ever ever ever. I think Eoin could wear him down, though. But even with that handled, there’s still obtaining the financial backing…. And getting everyone’s very busy schedules to align…

So. It’s feasible, but there’s challenges.

If it were me? Honestly? As in Eoin-If-Youre-Reading-This-Seriously-Here’s-A-Suggestion?

I’d write a radio drama and get the cast together on a remote zoom call and perform it like a table read.

Just… get something out there. Show people there’s an audience. Then, once you have this Proof of Concept finished, and show there’s an audience, then go after the Full Monty.

Every single writer’s conference I watch talks about getting that shorter proof of concept out there. The Matrix folks made a graphic novel to sell the script. Lots of theatrical films are based on 5 minute short films. Product design works this way too. Proof of concept, baby. Git-r-done.

That’s what I think, anyway.

Hi! This post is a bit longer than usual lmao, because I focused on tips on writing the first paragraph and added examples - I personally learn best from good examples.

I actually also added a bullet point about introducing a character, I hope that's okay with you because this post is also directed to general audience! You can just skip the point about the introducing the character <3

1. Interesting opening line

This is a really common tip, but it's one of the key points in writing a compelling first chapter. Your opening line should : 1) Hook the readers, and 2) Make them question. If you can achieve these two points from the first line of your book, they're more likely to continue reading in order to find out more about the story.

Here are two of my favorite opening lines in books I've read :

"We were all villains in the beginning." - Renegades, Marissa Meyer

"In glittering Shanghai, a monster awakens." - These Violent Delights, Chloe Gong

See? With just a few words, these opening lines hooked us and made us question : What made everyone villains in the beginning? What kind of monster awoke in Shanghai, and why? Basically, piquing your reader's curiosity is the best way to write a first line.

2. Interesting opening paragraph

Besides the opening line, the opening paragraph is also of vital importance, because it will elaborate more on the first line, which can't fit too much information. There are different ways to effectively write a good opening paragraph :

• Introducing a vivid setting

You can hook your readers by introducing a unique setting in the first paragraph. Here's an example :

"Satellite city. The City of the Future, proclaimed by the billboards. A metropolis completely controlled by the Myishi 9 Satellite hovering overhead like a floating man-of-war. An entire city custom-constructed for the third millenium. Everything the body wanted, and nothing the soul needed. Three hundred square miles of grey steel and automobiles." -The Supernaturalist by Eoin Colfer

The opening line was a simple one, but that's fine, because the first paragraph elaborated on it and managed to interest the readers by introducing a compelling setting. The phrase "everything the body wanted, and nothing the soul needed" also describes the setting in a unique way.

• Introducing the main character

Your main character is one of the most important aspects of your story. You have a bland one? Your readers will put down the book because they won't care about their journey. But if you start off with a character that your readers can connect with and root for, they'll be willing to follow them until the end of your story.

"I know I'm not an ordinary ten-year-old kid. I mean, sure, I do ordinary things. I eat ice cream. I ride my bike. I play ball. I have an XBox. Stuff like that makes me feel ordinary, I guess. And I feel ordinary. Inside. But I know ordinary kids don't make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds. I know ordinary kids don't get stared at wherever they go." - Wonder by R.J. Palacio

This paragraph is very simple, because the book is targeted to younger audience, but I love how it introduces the main character and makes us sympathize for him.

• Setting the mood

Determine a mood to set for the rest of your book, and introduce it in the first paragraph. Will your story be hopeful? Lighthearted? Gloomy? Whimsical? An excellent example for this is :

"Kaz Brekker didn't need a reason. Those were the words whispered on the streets of Ketterdam, in the taverns and coffeehouses, in the dark and bleeding alleys of the pleasure district known as the Barrel. The boy they called Dirtyhands didn't need a reason any more than he needed permission - to break a leg, sever an alliance, or change a man's fortunes with the turn of a card." - Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

Disclaimer : I did not, in fact, forget about Joost. Yes i know this is technically from the 2nd chapter BUT it's such a good example and idk what else to use

See how the paragraph sets the mood of the story? It also introduces Kaz perfectly, stating his alias and depicting his gray morality. Overall, this opening paragraph includes two of the techniques - so it's a 10/10.

Of course, you don't have to stress yourself out trying to use these three techniques. There are more ways to write a first paragraph - you can even be creative and start something new!

3. Start with action

A common mistake in writing first chapters is how writers often show the main character's normal day before jumping into action. Unless their "normal day" is stealing gold from vaults, you might want to save their daily routine for a flashback in later chapters. Jump straight into action, and you'll be more likely to hook your readers.

4. Don't info dump

Starting a new book is like arriving in that world for the first time. Obviously, you'll be stressed out if someone just came up to you and explained the history of a street name when you just arrived there a second ago. Similarly, readers don't want an info dump in your first chapter. Only tell them simple yet interesting and important information about your world and characters in the first chapter.

5. End with a cliffhanger

Your readers might be dedicated enough to finish reading through the first chapter, but once it ends, that's a chance for them to put the book down if it's not their cup of tea. To avoid this, you can try ending your first chapter with a cliffhanger. That way, your readers will be eager to find out more and dive right into the next chapters, eventually getting invested in the book.

6. Don't fuss over it

Writing a first chapter is hard, and you won't get it right in your first draft. Don't fuss over it - skip it if you need to - because you can always get back to it once you get better ideas or start a new draft.

Ah yes I have been searching for it as well when the anon told me about it but I have no idea when Eoin posted it or what was on this post (except for Holly I guess?).

But yeah, Eoin can be wild on social media and it's hilarious to watch him experiment around. I'm also a bit curious what he's talking about in his podcast but I haven't gotten to it yet and I don't know if it's worth it.
