" OF COURSE ." the words come out a bit softer than enrie intended them to . perhaps it is something in elizabeth's expression, in the way her eyes meet their own . they clear their throat a bit before adding, " it is no trouble at all ." enrie finds themself a bit out of their depth the longer elizabeth continues . they make a valiant attempt not to show it, but they're unsure how successful it is . if there was anything that enrie was perhaps less than skilled in it was romance . they had no idea how to give advice in such a matter either . they flounder a bit for a moment before, " well, it would be your first time wed, wouldn't it ? i'm sure it is understandable to not know everything . knowledge should come with experience ." enrie nods firmly with the words because they at least sound right to their own ears . they try not to think too deeply about elizabeth gaining experience with elric because that is a surefire way to make themself uncomfortable . so instead they arch their brows, meet her eyes and ask, " but if there are any other questions i can help you with then ," a pause . enrie shrugs . " i suppose you can ask me . if they are in my power to answer, of course ."
elizabeth hesitates at enrie's question, the look they have, and she looks away from enrie for just a moment. why hadn't she said something? the first thing that comes to mind is shame. it was her duty to make her future husband happy and pleased with her. but she hasn't even succeeded in making him angry with her. he feels absolutely nothing for elizabeth and that was even worse. "i . . . thank you. i'd really appreciate that," elizabeth finally says, briefly meeting enrie's gaze before looking down at her hands once more. she should feel good about it all but she didn't. even if enrie's advice did work, was she so sure that she even wanted him to come around? it wasn't elric who had her attention. "i thought that i'd have it all figured out by now. shouldn't i? we are to be married and yet, i don't know what to do," elizabeth confesses with a shake of her head. or how to feel either. "i'm absolutely clueless."

Happenstance
Summary: Henry is about to go to bed one night when he suddenly gets a text from a random number he doesn’t know. What happens when you accidentally text the star actor of The Witcher? Memes apparently. Lots and lots of memes.
Part One | Part Two | Part Three | Part Four
Pairing: Henry Cavill x OFC (Lizzy Moore)
Word count: 1.3K
Warnings: None...yet! Just some fluffy flirting. Well okay and lots of mention of his crotch? 😬😘
A/N: So I’ve had this idea bouncing around in my brain for a LONG time and finally pulled the trigger and wrote it! It’s in texting format, and I hope you like it! This is my first time posting fan fiction on here so I’m nervous and excited!
Beta: Thank you to @avengeful-bunny for being my AMAZING beta. I don’t know what I would do without you. 💛💛
Tagging: I’m going to tag all those whose work has inspired me to write and post my work! Much love to ALL of you! @littlefreya @dancingwendigo @mary-ann84 @yespolkadotkitty @viking-raider @cavillhoney
Part 1: Oops.
(405:) God, girl. You will not BELIEVE the day I had. I'm pretty sure I lost a pint of blood today from how many times I stabbed myself sewing.
(405:)
(Henry:) You should probably get a thimble for that.
(Henry:) Also, I do believe you have the wrong number. Considering you started the text off with 'girl' and I am quite the opposite. But even so, please spill the tea. I’m dying to know about this UNBELIEVABLE day you’ve had.
(Henry:)
(405:) Oh my god, MR. CAVILL I AM soooo SO SO SORRY. I must have accidentally clicked on your name and not my friend's name.
(405:) I feel really awkward having your number when you don’t have mine. Do you want me to delete it? Just to make sure this doesn’t happen again? Also so some random crew member doesn’t have your number?
(Henry:) Oh god, please call me Henry. There’s no need for such formalities. And it’s fine, there’s no need to delete it. Since you mentioned crew and sewing, I'm assuming you work for the costuming department?
(Henry:) Also, I have your number now, don't I? :P
(405:) By it’s fine do you mean this kind of fine?
(405:)
(Henry:) Oh no, it’s LITERALLY fine. I promise.
(Henry:)
(405:) But to answer your question, yes! I work for the costuming department. I’m newer, so I get to do the usual stuff. Mostly just lots of mending at the moment. And JUST TO BE CLEAR, I won't do anything to abuse this number since you're Henry Cavill.
(405:) And you’re Henry Cavill. Also you are my co-worker, my I’m assuming super rich, god tier co-worker that I’m not supposed to make eye contact with nevermind TEXT.
(Henry:)
(Henry:) But yes, my name is Henry. Please keep my number, we’re coworkers after all, it’s normal for coworkers to have each other’s numbers. Have we met on set before?
(405:) We have once or twice, just in passing mostly. Once I brought you clothes to your trailer.
(Henry:) Are you the one with the brown and pink hair?
(405:) That's me. :)
(Henry:) Don't tell me your name, I know what it is.
(405:) Are you sure about that? You don't seem too confident :P
(Henry:) I know it starts with an E. Is it Eloise? Eleanor? I know it was something old fashioned, too.
(405:) Man, you're so close. I mean, kind of. Think of historical dead English queens. Like, for example you were best friends with her dad. You were a fancy Duke who was good with the sword and ladies. Also, I’m sorry, aren’t you supposed to be a big nerd?
(Henry:) ELIZABETH!
(Henry:) And I am a HUGE nerd thank you very much.
(Elizabeth:) Yes, that's my name haha. Also, whoa whoa, settle down there cowboy.
(Elizabeth:) And it’s just Lizzy, with a Y. The thought of spelling it with an IE makes me cringe.
(Lizzy:)
(Henry:) Pretty much everyone? Who doesn't call you Lizzy?
(Lizzy:) My dad, my grandma, my teachers, my victims, my doctor, the one girl in high school who hated me.
(Henry:) Haha that's quite the list there Lizzy Borden. I think it’s your turn to settle down. :P
(Henry:) Well then Lizzy with a Y, it's nice to finally talk to you, even though it's over text.
(Henry:) So I have to ask, I take it they were cracking the whip pretty hard in wardrobe today?
(Lizzy:) You know, I was doing what I thought was a pretty damn good job of avoiding that subject.
(Henry:) Nope, you can't slip past me. This brain is like an iron trap.
(Lizzy:) If you MUST know...
(Henry:) I really do. I'm sitting on the edge of my seat in anticipation.
(Henry:)
(Lizzy:) Okay well that just sounds sarcastic. I don't HAVE to tell you... :P
(Lizzy:) I'm kidding, kidding. Well, since you MUST know, I spent at least half of my day mending clothes, particularly the crotch of multiple pairs of your pants. Also a few pairs had the butt blown out.
(Henry:) The crotch?
(Lizzy:) Yes, the CROTCH OF YOUR PANTS HENRY. :P Honestly I'm used to it at this point though. It's not the first time, or I'm assuming the last, that I'll have to mend the crotch of your pants. It’s not your fault the studio wants you in tighter fitting clothes that can show off how muscular you are. It’s just my job to fix it. ;)
(Henry:) I guess I never really thought about who it was having to mend them when that happens.
(Lizzy:) And it’s not just your crotch area I mend, it’s your inseams as well. I think your thighs got a little bigger since the initial fitting. :P
(Lizzy:) And yes, us little people taking care of you famous movie stars, making sure you stay looking like the heartthrob you are. Since that is your job and all. :P
(Henry:) Hey now, I’m more than just a pretty face. You make me sound like a talentless hack. But thank you. For your sake I'll try and not blow out any more seams, especially the crotch.
(Lizzy:) You don't need to thank me, it's literally my job. ;)
(Lizzy:) I mean, if your muscles didn’t rip through clothing on a regular basis I’d be out of a job! How rude.
(Henry:) Well I mean in that case I COULD make it a habit. ;)
(Lizzy:) All I have to say is I’m SO glad we don’t have to worry about shirt buttons on you during this. I’ve seen the stress you put on buttons during press junkets. The anxiety I feel, Henry. So much anxiety.
(Lizzy:)
(Henry:) Yeah, those shirts never seem to fit my chest right. I taught myself how to sew buttons on my shirts so I could stop asking others to help.
(Lizzy:) Okay, the fact that you taught yourself how to sew on buttons because it’s a CONTINUING issue is both hilarious and adorable. :P
(Henry:)
(Henry:) So I’m curious about something, costume wise.
(Lizzy:) Yes? I’m sure I can answer, costume wise. ;)
(Henry:) How long does it take to sew together a shirt from scratch?
(Lizzy:) Well, it all depends on the type of shirt, and what it’s for. For the sake of film, there are so many steps. Design, pattern making, grading, construction, fitting. That’s just a fraction of it. It’s a very long process.
(Lizzy:) But if I was at home making a shirt for a friend, I could do it start to finish in a couple of hours. They're not hard. I can sew them together in my sleep.
(Henry:) A few HOURS? That's amazing.
(Lizzy:) Eh, it's what I went to school for. ;) It’s not that impressive to me.
(Henry:) Well, to me it is at least. ;)
(Lizzy:)
(Henry:)
(Henry:) Unfortunately, it's time for me to go to bed. I have an early call time in the morning.
(Lizzy:) You're going to bed at 6 in the evening? I’m assuming you have a super crazy call time? One time I had a call time of 1 am because there were things that had to be fixed by the time you and Anya got to set at 4 am. Although it does have it’s advantages. I get to have the first pick of craft services, and sunrises are always nice to watch.
(Lizzy:) But I’m sorry, that sucks. :(
(Henry:) Some days it does, especially when I can't seem to fall asleep. But today was exhausting so I don't think I'll have any issues tonight. Plus Kal has been extra cuddly tonight so I definitely won’t have any issues.
(Lizzy:) Well then, I guess this is where we say goodnight. I hope you sleep well. :)
(Henry:) Thank you. I hope you do, too. Hopefully tomorrow will involve less bleeding onto garments. ;P
(Lizzy:) Haha, I mean it really doesn’t matter. If anything it makes the garment just look THAT much more legit. I hope you have a good day on set tomorrow. :)
(Henry:) Thank you. It was really nice talking to you Lizzy. I hope we talk more again soon. :)
(Lizzy:) It was nice talking to you, too. And I would really like that. :)
(Lizzy:) Goodnight, Henry. :)
(Henry:) Goodnight Lizzy. Sleep well. :)

Drake’s Bay
This is Drake’s Bay over by the Golden Gate Bridge north of San Francisco. I’ve mentioned how Sir Francis Drake sailed the ocean blue to California in 1579 and subsequently became embroiled in an hundred-year E. Clampus Vitus prank https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2003-feb-19-me-hoax19-story.html , but how does one go from being born in a quiet little town in Devon to circumnavigating the globe as a world-famous pirate, terror of the Spanish Main, El Draque? It helps to be the son of a minister I think, so he got his start as a holy terror well off. He was the oldest of twelve brothers, which also helped. And he was named ‘Francis’ after my great great +++ grandfather Francis Russell, his godfather, so his path to evil and mayhem was pretty much assured at that point.
As far as being a minister’s son, this was certainly an exciting time to be one. England was neck deep in the fallout of the excommunication of not only ‘Enry the Eighth ‘E Was, but also Elizabeth the I in 1570. Reads as follows http://www.papalencyclicals.net/Pius05/p5regnans.htm “Elizabeth, the pretended Queen of England and servant of crime...” (are we starting to see why she became champion of pirates like Drake yet? *cough* erghm privateer - a category she greatly expanded and encouraged) So various sundry Archbishops of Canterbury were tearing their hair out trying to create a unified doctrine of the new Church of England, and sometimes losing their heads in the process.
And here comes Mr Drake senior, with what might call a quacking good crop of sons, a minister of Protestant persuasion, and in 1549 with five year old little duckling Francis, in comes the new English Book of Common prayer to Devon, like a flaming sword of rancor to introduce new songs and phrases to the largely Catholic countryside. Drake became unpopular and had to flee during what became known as the Prayer Book Rebellion (why does that sound so pettily awesome?) In addition to a new religious handbook the crown had recently imposed a highly unpopular poll tax on sheep, which doesn’t sound quite so exciting, but probably played a major part in getting the riot started. So there was the Siege of Exeter by 2000 men, the Battle of Fenny Bridges, where the Russels hired a whole bunch of foreign mercenaries to counter the local army of about 8000, the Battle of Woodbury Common, the Battle of Clyst St Mary, The Clyst Heath massacre, the Battle of Clyst Heath, the Relief of Exeter and the final Battle of Sampford Courtenay. Russells won but in the meantime, Mr. Drake Sr. got out of Dodge, and young Francis Drake decided, fatefully, that he didn’t particularly like Catholics all that much now that he thought about it.
They went to Kent, and became a naval chaplain, and he apprenticed Francis to his neighbor, who was running a merchant boat between England and France. Francis did so well that he inherited the ship from his master at the age of 22. At 23 he made his first voyage to Plymouth, and then down to Mexico where he had some adventures, went to the West Indies a few times. Then he decided to get revenge on Catholic Spaniards everywhere for his mexican misadventures by capturing Panama. He had two boats and 73 men, and set out to raid and capture the gold transfer point the town Nombre de Dios, where the Spanish were taking gold out of south america an putting it onto their big galleons for passage to Spain. He didn’t capture the town, got injured, but hung around for a while and got the hang of raiding and piratry. In 1573 he bagged a mule train and 20 tons of gold. not being able to move that much he buried it somewhere where it’s never been found (buried treasure!) but he salvaged a lot of it and made it back to England.
Elizabeth was quite impressed and sent him out to keep attacking the Spanish. It was rough going but Drake was equal to the task, even to quelling mutinies, and burning his ships. After capturing more, he decided to sail around Cape Horn, and named the passage that he took ‘Drake’s passage’, though it’s disputed at what spot he made it around. Then he went merrily up the coast of Chile, capturing Spanish galleons, carousing, captured a wine ship, etc. Then he goes to California to scope the place out. Drake’s bay is where he landed, but only for long enough to plant a flag, declare it New Albion, and motor on off into the briny. All his notes and maps and things for the California voyage were burned when Whitehall palace, the largest palace in Europe, burned to the ground in 1698. After California he headed off across the pacific, through the indian ocean and then around Cape of Good Hope and back to England, Magellan be hanged this was the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe and Drake was a national hero.
Elizabeth knighted him immediately, Drake presented her with treasures, presents and curiosities, and she declared that all written accounts of his voyages were to become ‘the Queen’s Secrets of the Realm’ and they were all sworn to secrecy on pain of death. This so much better a plot than anything Pirates of the Caribbean has managed. Drake’s desired new regalia was ‘a wyvern wings displayed and tail nowed gules’ which sounds ominous and amazing even though I don’t know what half those words mean. The other Drake family who owned the crest didn’t like their heritage being taken up by a pirate and the reigning patriarch of that family punched Sir Francis Drake in the face in the throne room in front of the queen. To settle the dispute, the Queen made a new crest for Sir Francis, with the two pole stars and a wavy ocean in between and other complex stuff. The house motto was made as ‘Sic Parvis Magna’ or ‘Thus great things from small things come’ and that certainly seemed fitting.
This is only the early half of Sir Francis Drake’s life, he spent years on expeditions, privateer to the queen, vice admiral of the English fleet during the whole ‘spanish armada sank mysteriously last night, which was super fortunate your majesty’ incident. Fights and battles and wars and stuff. Before he died of dysentary (I can hear the music now), he asked to be dressed in full armor. He was buried at sea in his armor and in a lead coffin near Portobelo Panama and the coffin, like the treasure has never been found.

Heroic reader saved Elizabeth from a falling-!!! flower pot.
Sorry it’s kinda short, I wasn’t sure how to do this one. XD But hopefully it’s still cute!
Honestly, the last thing you thought you’d have to worry about Elizabethbeing attacked by is the flower pot that suddenly fell from up above. It was sudden enough that she didn’t even see it until you rushedforward and pushed her out of the way. Thankfully, though, bothof you escape unharmed. It’s strange to think that of all thethings that could happen to the two of you while you’re on anafternoon stroll, the thing that ends up happening is to have anear-miss with something like that.
Assilly as it is, though, it was still a danger. “Oh, my goodness,(Y/N)!!” Elizabeth squeals and clings to you as she steps back tolook at the aftermath. There’s now a mess of broken pottery, soil, and a seedling of some flower littering the sidewalk. “(Y/N)…”she breathes, and buries her face against your shoulder. “You savedmy life! How did you ever see that?!”
“Idon’t know if ‘saved your life’ is the correct phrase,” youmurmur before glancing up to see where it even came from. “Do youthink it would have hurt you that much?”
“Whatare you talking about?! Love, if you hadn’t gotten me out of theway, it would have hit me right on the head!” The young lady onlysqueezes tighter – looking simultaneously upset that she was almosthit and relieved that you saved her. Surely it was no gunfight you’vesaved her from, but if she’s that worked up about almost being hit, maybe she’s right. “You’re my hero!!”
Beforeshe can start plastering your face with kisses, (although she’sgoing to do that eventually, and you’ll welcome it), a womanholding a young baby peeks her head out of a window in the flat aboveyou. “Oh, my Lord! I’m so sorry, Lady Midford!!” The babysquirms in her arms, and she holds him tighter against her chest. “Itook my eyes off ‘Enry ‘ere fer one second, ‘n’ ‘e knockedover the flowerpot on the sill! Are y’ both alright down there?”
“Don’tworry about it, madam!” Elizabeth presses a kiss to your cheek andleans against you. “Thanks to my darling, I’m fine!” Her gazeflits down the ground, then looks up; her smile is looking a lot moreguilty now. “Dreadfully sorry about your flower, though! Afraid thepot is smashed to pieces! If you’ll let me, I can get you areplacement!”
Well, that’s your Lizzie. Narrowly escapes getting hit by a flowerpot, and is now concerned about getting a new one for the harried motherupstairs.
Ifanyone deserves a hero, it’s Elizabeth.

Submitted: Instrument of Consent
Oh My GAD AHPF!
This is what I’ve been looking forward to since November darling! NOVEMBER! Hah…
PLEASE notice Lilibets delightfully aristocratic snub:
“I declare My Consent to a Contract of Matrimony between My Most Dearly Beloved Grandson Prince Henry Charles Albert David of Wales and Rachel Meghan Markle,”
Wait, whaaa? Lots of flourishes for liddle ‘Enry-Wenry and then basically, “that woman Markle”.
Compare with William and Kate’s:
“Now know ye that We have consented and do by these Presents signify Our Consent to the contracting of Matrimony between Our Most Dearly Beloved Grandson Prince William Arthur Philip Louis of Wales K.G. and Our Trusty and Well-beloved Catherine Elizabeth Middleton.”
Now insert *crickets*
I love the DM snark noting about hte difference, “However such praise was missing for Prince Harry’s fiancee, who was simply referred to by her birthname, Rachel Meghan Markle.”
Oh I’m having a right ball. And this is the Queen that Meghan’s been having Mother’s Day tea with while the beloved corgies roost on her feet? Yah… sure Jan [or should I say, “Sure Rache”?]
Not even a single, cool word of “eh, she’s m'kay” or even a royal, “meh”. This is literally icy northern winds blowing through: Just. The. Name. No other acknowledgement.
PRICELESS! I’m loving this too much. Eeek!

"POLDARK" Series One (1975): Episodes Nine to Twelve
"POLDARK" SERIES ONE (1975): EPISODES NINE TO TWELVE It has been a while since I had last viewed "POLDARK", the BBC's 1975-77 adaptation of Winston Graham's literary series about the post-war life of a British Army officer American Revolutionary War veteran named Ross Poldark. Real life and several movies releases distracted my attention from the series. Eventually, I found the time to watch Series One's adaptation of Graham's 1950 novel, "Jeremy Poldark: A Novel of Cornwall, 1790-1791". Episode Eight had ended on a grim note. Ross' new smelting company ended in failure after his cousin Francis Poldark revealed the shareholders' names to the former's rival, George Warleggan. Ross now finds himself in financial straights. Francis was stricken with Putrid's Throat and Ross' wife, Demelza Carne Poldark, helped Francis' wife, Elizabeth Chynoweth Poldark, nurse the stricken man back to health. Unfortunately, both Demelza and young daughter Julia were stricken with the same illness. Demelza recovered. Julia did not. Following Julia's death, one of the Warleggans' ships were wrecked off the coast of Poldark land. Despite Ross' efforts to conduct a rescue of the survivors (in this version, at least), many of the locals salvaged the goods from the ship and caused a riot on the ship. The episode ended with Ross being arrested for instigating the riot. Episode Nine began with Ross' return to his estate, Nampara, after spending a short period in jail. While he prepares to find a barrister (attorney) to represent him in court, Demelza tries to recruit help from the local gentry to have the charges dropped against Ross or ensure a not guilty verdict. Much against Ross' wishes, who stubbornly wants to guarantee his freedom on his own. Ross' friend, Dr. Dwight Enrys, meets the spoiled heiress Caroline Peneven, when she mistakes him for a veterinarian for her pug. Francis, who continues to feels guilty over his betrayal of the Carnmore Copper Company, sinks to a new low before sets out to make amends with Ross. And George and Nicholas Warleggan, who had arranged Ross' arrest in the first place, tries to guarantee a guilty verdict for Ross by bribing the latter's former servant, Jud Paynter, to testify against him. Following the trial in which Ross is exonerated, the Poldarks at both Nampara and Trenwith are forced to deal with their low financial straits. Ross and Francis reconcile and make plans to re-open Wheal Grace and dig for copper. To finance re-opening the mine, Ross allows local smugglers led by a man named Mr. Trencom to use the cove on Nampara land for a smuggling operation. Demelza is against the idea, but Ross refuses to listen to her. Meanwhile, Demelza discovers that she is pregnant with their second child. Due to their financial straits and the trauma of baby Julia's death, she fears that Ross will be unhappy by the news of her pregnancy. Demelza also resorts to solo fishing trips behind her husband's back to provide food for Nampara's inhabitants, while Ross' finances suffer. In fact, Episode Twelve ends with a very pregnant Demelza struggling to row back to the shore, while she goes into labor. What can I say about the 1975 adaptation of "Jeremy Poldark: A Novel of Cornwall, 1790-1791"? I have mixed feelings about it. Perhaps my feelings for this adaptation is due to the source material. "Jeremy Poldark" is probably the shortest novel in Graham's twelve-book series. A novel's lenghth should not determine one's opinion of it. But if I must be brutally honest, I do not have a high regard for "Jeremy Poldark". It seemed more like a filler episode of a television series with a long-term narrative structure. The most interesting aspects of the novel were the emotional estrangement between Ross and Demelza, following their daughter's death and his deal with smugglers; Francis' attempt to reconcile with Ross; and of course, Ross' trial for the riot that had occurred near the end of "Demelza - A Novel of Cornwall, 1788-1790". Episode Nine mainly focused on Ross' preparations for the trial, Demelza's attempts to seek help for him, and the Warleggans' preparations to ensure that Ross will be convicted. That included recruiting Jud Paynter to testify against Ross. It was a pretty interesting episode. Somewhat. I thought the episode featured a colorful quality once the setting shifted to Bodmin for both the trial and upcoming local elections. It also featured a colorful assembly ball where Demelza, wearing the same gown she had worn at the Warleggans' ball in Episode Six, tries to recruit support and help for Ross. The episode ended with a cliffhanger, as Francis Poldark, who was also at the ball and in Bodmin to support Ross, contemplates committing suicide with a pistol in his hand. Episode Eleven mainly focused on Ross and Demelza's separate efforts to maintain their survival and rejuvenate their fortunes. And for the first time, the series delved into the strains that their their problems and Julia's death had placed upon their marriage. For Ross and Demelza, the honeymoon is finally over and I could not be any more happier. There is nothing that will bore me quicker than an idealized romance. Finally, the saga settles down to forcing the couple to work at making their marriage work. And I have to give credit to both Robin Ellis and Angharad Rees for their skillful portrayal of Ross and Demelza's struggles to make their marriage work. This was especially apparent in one scene that featured a quarrel between the couple following a supper party they had attended at Trenwith. Sometime during the evening, Ross and his former love, Elizabeth Chynoweth Poldark, had the opportunity for a private conversation that ended with Ross complimenting her appearance. Unfortunately, Demelza appeared and was able to overhear his compliment. Which would explained the Ross and Demelza's quarrel. Ever since the current adaptation of "POLDARK" had first aired, I have encountered complaints about how actor Kyle Soller had portrayed Francis Poldark as an ill-tempered loser during the show's first season. To be honest, Clive Francis had did the same in the 1975 adaptations of "Ross Poldark: A Novel of Cornwall, 1783-1787" and "Demelza". I noticed that once Francis had put his friendship with the manipulative George Warleggan behind him and reconciled with Ross, he finally became that wry and witty man that so many had commented about. And the actor gave a very charming and subtle performance. I also enjoyed the portrayal of the burgeoning romance between Dr. Dwight Enys and heiress Caroline Penvenen, thanks to Richard Morant and Judy Geeson's sparkling performances. The beginning of their relationship reminded me of the numerous Hollywood comedies between the late 1950s and mid 1960s. This was especially highlighted by Caroline's mistaken assumption that Dwight was more of a veterinarian and the latter's subtle contempt toward her privileged behavior. In a way, I find their relationship a bit more realistic than the one between Ross and Demelza. Dwight and Caroline's relationship strike me as good example of how class differences can effect a potential romance between two people of such disparate backgrounds. But the one episode that I truly enjoyed was Episode Ten. It featured the assizes in Bodmin and especially Ross' trial. If I must be brutally honest, Episode Ten did not feature one of Robin Ellis' best performances as Ross Poldark. He spent most of the episode looking rather stoic and occasionally, disapproving. It seemed as if the world of 18th century Cornwall had merely revolved around him. And a colorful world it turned out to be. The excitement actually began in the second half of Episode Nine, which featured the local elections, a local ball and the preparations for Ross' trial. But it was the assizes itself, which included Ross' trial that made Episode Ten fascinated for me. Not only did it feature Ross' trial, filled with attempts by the corrupt prosecutor to circumvent the law; but also another in which a woman was convicted for a minor crime and punished with a public whipping. At least three performances made Episode Ten very interesting. One of those performances came from Paul Curran, who portrayed Ross' former servant (at the time), Jud Paynter. Curran's Jud spent most of the episode getting drunk in order to shore up his courage to testify against Ross. It almost seemed as if Curran had to sustain the image of a drunken Jud throughout the entire episode. He also had to constantly irritate George Warleggan, portrayed by Ralph Bates. And the latter is the second performance that really caught my interest. I really enjoyed Bates in this episode. His George Warleggan was a man irritated not only by Jud's drunkeness, but also by the tight-fisted Nicholas Warleggan. Bates did an excellent job in basically portraying a straight man to a pair of comic performances. That second comic performance belonged to Nicholas Selby, who gave a rather subtle, yet funny performance as the venal, yet penny-pinching Nicholas. Poor George. His father is vindictive enough to demand that Ross suffers for the looting of his shipwrecked ship, but cheap enough to demand that George pay a small amount to arrange for Ross' conviction. Talk about a man between a rock and a hard place. Despite these narrative and character virtues, I still remained somewhat unimpressed by Episodes Nine to Twelve. I was not impressed by how screenwriters Peter Draper and Paul Wheeler, along with director Kenneth Ives; structured the narrative for these episodes. One, their use of cliffhangers seemed a bit off kilter to me. In two episodes - Episodes Nine and Ten - the screenwriters and the director used cliffhangers to tell the audience what happened and not show. Episode Nine ended with a despondent Francis Poldark pressing a pistol to his head, as he prepared to commit suicide. Yet, there was no gunshot or anything to hint what happened. Audiences did not learn that the suicide attempt had failed due to the pistol's misfire in a conversation between Francis and Dwight Enys. I found this handling of Francis' suicide attempt extremely annoying. Apparently, it was easier for Draper and Ives to tell the audience what happened via Francis' revelation than show it. As for Episode Ten, it ended with the judge about to announce the verdict at the end of Ross' trial. But audiences did not learn about the verdict, until George Warleggan had informed his father . . . at the beginning of Episode Eleven. It seemed ridiculously unnecessary to end Episode Ten in this manner. Worse, it was another example of the writer and director telling what happened, instead of showing. Speaking of "episodic interruptus", Episode Twelve, which is the last one that served as an adaptation of "Jeremy Poldark: A Novel of Cornwall, 1790-1791", ended with a pregnant Demelza rowing back to shore as she goes into labor. One, this is not how the novel ended. It ended with a conciliation between Ross and Francis during the newborn Jeremy Poldark's christening; along with Ross and Demelza at home, as they contemplated on keeping their family and household. I see now that the screenwriter had allowed Ross and Francis to reconcile before Jeremy's birth, so that they could end the episode on this cliffhanger with Demelza struggling to reach the shore. I found this a waste of time. This was simply another example of telling the audience what happened, instead of showing. Episode Thirteen, which began the adaptation of "Warleggan: A Novel of Cornwall, 1792-1793", began with Demelza reaching the shore and later, Ross announcing the presence of his newborn son. Frustrating! And unnecessary. Although I had earlier complimented Paul Curran's comic performance of the drunken Jud Paynter, I must admit there is so much of Jud that I can take. He almost became something of a fly on the ointment to me during my favorite episode, Episode Ten. But Episode Twelve truly became something of a chore for me, due to the whole "Jud is dead" story arc. After double-crossing the Warleggans by failing to testify against Ross and keeping the fifteen shillings they had given him, Jud is assaulted by some of George Warleggan's men at the end of Episode Eleven. A great deal of Episode Twelve focused on Jud's funeral and wake, while Ross and Demelza attended another supper party at Trenwith. A great deal. To make matters worse, it turned out that Jud was never dead . . . just unconscious. No one had bothered to verify whether he was dead or not. Instead, they had mistaken his unconscious body as a corpse. Not only was I irritated that Jud was not dead, I believe that Winston Graham had committed something of a cheat with this story line. Worse, I had to endure thirty to forty minutes of Jud's wake, which seemed more than I was able to bear. I really wish he had remained dead. I have one last quibble and it involved at least two missing characters. What happened to Jinny Carter? You know . . . Jinny? Ross and Demelza's kitchen maid? The widow of one Jim Carter? What happened to her? Actress Gillian Bailey, who had portrayed Ginny in the adaptation of "Ross Poldark" and "Demelza", seemed to be missing during these four episodes. Worse, no mention was made about her lack of presence. I find this ironic, considering that Jinny's father, Zacky Martin, was not missing. Forbes Collins, who had portrayed Zacky, had a strong presence in these four episodes - including the sequence involving Jud's funeral. So why was Jinny missing? And I also noticed that after twelve episodes and adaptations of three novels, Aunt Agatha Poldark remained missing. I realize that she plays an important role in "Warleggan: A Novel of Cornwall, 1792-1793" and "The Black Moon: A Novel of Cornwall, 1794-1795". But why has she been missing for so long in this adaptation of Winston Graham's saga? How did producers Morris Barry and Anthony Coburn explain her appearance in future episodes, beginning with the adaptation of "Warleggan"? There were some highlights from Barry and Coburn's adaptation of "Jeremy Poldark: A Novel of Cornwall, 1790-1791". These highlights include Ross Poldark's trial in Episode Ten; the burgeoning romance between Dr. Dwight Enys and Caroline Penvenen; and the performances of three cast members - Paul Curran, Nicholas Selby and especially Ralph Bates. But overall, I was not that impressed by Episodes Nine to Twelve. I found the narrative structure of these episodes rather troubling, especially with how cliffhangers were used. And the handling of the Jud Paynter character struck me as well, somewhat overbearing. Oh well. Onward to Episode Thirteen.

H(enry) gave way to (Elizabeth) when she insisted, as the Spanish ambassador reported: “Gave the Queen two letters from them, and two letters from the Princess of Wales. The King had a dispute with the Queen because he wanted to have one of the said letters to carry continually about him, but the Queen did not like to part with hers, having sent the other to the Prince of Wales.”

ENRIE'S MOUTH OPENS AND CLOSES for a moment, taken aback enough to be near speechless . " i'll have you know i treat the commoners extremely well ." enrie blurts out , face scrunching a bit in their confusion because yes, they may have brushed off a few invitations ( or perhaps, rather, all of them ) but they hardly thought this would be the result . they're about to say as much truly, that this is all being blown rather largely out of proportion but then elizabeth continues and they have to blink . " elric is not making the effort with you ?" the concept alone catches enrie unawares . it's not as if they had exactly been keeping tabs on their brother's courting of elizabeth because truly, they'd much rather prefer to know absolutely nothing about it . but they'd assumed it was at least happening . their brows furrow as they absorb elizabeth's words, as they straighten in their seat and fold their hands neatly on their desks . " well, why didn't you just say that ?" a pause and a hesitant look into elizabeth's eyes . " this is something i can help you with . elric heeds his elder sibling, he will listen to me . i had no idea he was... neglecting you ." a beat as their heart pangs a bit, as their eyes soften . " or that you were lonely for it ." it is something that enrie can relate to . the empathy makes it harder for them to be firm, but having a task makes them feel a bit more comfortable . they nod decisively . " i will speak to him . i will fix this and you will —" enrie falters just a bit but begins to gather the papers on their desks to cover it . " and then all will be well between the two you . you'll see ."
does enrie make good points? to be fair, yes. but that didn't mean elizabeth could allow herself to agree with them. not when she felt in her heart that she had done everything necessary to try and be cordial with enrie. "that's not true. i've requested your presence many times to talk or . . . or something and you just brush me off like i'm a commoner. as if i won't soon be family. maybe you haven't treated me terribly but pretending like i'm not here and won't continue to be here makes it seem like you despise me." at enrie's next argument, elizabeth falters. enrie was correct - elizabeth knew that she should make more of an effort to connect with her future husband rather than enrie. and yet . . . "i think you and your brother have something in common. no matter how many times i try to make an effort, it seems pointless. nothing changes." elizabeth has never felt more alone in her life. "i doubt that you care but . . . i've been so lonely ever since i arrived here. i feel like such an outsider in a place that's supposed to be my home.a nd i had hoped to make at least one frined here. but as you've continued to remind me, it's pointless."

"in case you forgot, i'm betrothed to your brother," elizabeth states, a fact that has yet to fully sink in for even her. but time is ticking and her freedom was slipping through her fingers like sand. it wouldn't be long at all before she was officially married and the very thought alone makes her chest feel tight. "so, whether you like it or not, we have to be around each other constantly. and i'd like for us to be... friends." things between the two had been tense. and elizabeth couldn't figure out why but her curiosity towards enrie prompted her to be the first to extend an olive branch. // @angclnumber

" WELL, I DO NOT DESPISE THE GROUND YOU WALK ON ." enrie near exclaims in frustration, " i feel wholly indifferent towards the ground you walk on . does knowing that," enrie fumbles for words . " aid you in some way ?" enrie truly has no idea why their life had to be so very hard . first the introduction of elizabeth as their brother's betrothed , which felt like an attack from the gods in itself . and now this . now she was here . in their space . surely they were being punished for something . " what ?" this time enrie's face does scrunch in their bewilderment as elizabeth goes on . this has all gotten vastly out of hand . " you have done nothing !" despite the quill still in their hand the work before enrie has been forgotten in favour of their confusion . " and i have not been treating you terribly ." enrie insists, because — perhaps they had been ignoring her . and perhaps they had been cold, but enrie was cold to most as it was . and perhaps, perhaps they overcompensated in their pursuit to put distance between them both but surely they could not have been that bad . " besides , should you not," enrie makes a vague gesture . " be seeking to bond with your betrothed instead of me ?"
elizabeth wasn't quite sure what she expected enrie's answer to be. but the last thing she had been anticipating was flat out rejection. "is that what you think? because there is a tension between us and it feel as though you despise the very ground i walk on." maybe elizabeth hadn't been too forthcoming in the beginning but she had been taken from her phone, preparing to be married off to a man she didn't love. "i can't imagine us frolicking about in the gardens any time soon, but i'd like things to be more . . . cordial between us. what' so terrible about that?" elizabeth questioned with a frown. "what's so terrible about me? what have i done that makes you treat me like this?"

elizabeth hesitates at enrie's question, the look they have, and she looks away from enrie for just a moment. why hadn't she said something? the first thing that comes to mind is shame. it was her duty to make her future husband happy and pleased with her. but she hasn't even succeeded in making him angry with her. he feels absolutely nothing for elizabeth and that was even worse. "i . . . thank you. i'd really appreciate that," elizabeth finally says, briefly meeting enrie's gaze before looking down at her hands once more. she should feel good about it all but she didn't. even if enrie's advice did work, was she so sure that she even wanted him to come around? it wasn't elric who had her attention. "i thought that i'd have it all figured out by now. shouldn't i? we are to be married and yet, i don't know what to do," elizabeth confesses with a shake of her head. or how to feel either. "i'm absolutely clueless."
