Moth of the Week
Canary-shouldered Thorn
Ennomos alniaria
Tumblr media
The canary-shouldered thorn was first described in 1758 by Carl Linnaeus. It is a part of the family Geometridae. This moth gets its name from its bright yellow coloring.
Description This moth has a bright canary yellow head and thorax. The forewings and hindwings are a ochre yellow with gray speckles. Both the forewings and the hindwings are a scalloped shape and both have a single dot on each wing called “discal spots” with the spots being larger on the hindwing. The forewings have two curved lines going across them.
This moth looks very similar to the Dusky Thorn, August Thorn and September Thorn moths.
Wingspan Range: 34 - 42 mm (≈1.34 - 1.65 in)
Forewing Range: 16 - 20 mm (≈0.63 - 0.79 in)
Diet and Habitat The larva of this species feed off of deciduous trees such as downy birch, silver birch, alder, goat willow, elms, and limes.
This moth’s range stretches from Russia and the Caucuses region in the east to Western Europe in the west and from Fennoscandia in the north to the northern Mediterranean in the south. It has also been introduced into British Columbia. The prefer habitats of woodland, scrub, parks and rural gardens.
Mating This moth has one generation per year. They can be seen flying from July and October and presumably mate during this time.
Predators This species is nocturnal and presumably majorly preyed on my nighttime predators such as bats. However it does use a form a camouflage as larva. The caterpillars of this species resemble dead twigs. This may also help against daytime predators.
Fun Fact The canary-shouldered thorn is attracted to light.

alright gimme the deets on ripple queen and dark nebula
YOU GOT IT BOSS
Okay okay for my Kirby Lore(tm) dark nebula did such a dogshit job during squeak squad trying to defeat kirby he was kicked out of the cool dark matter hivemind and fell into ripple star
ofc the fairies panicked. he is dark matter can we trust him?? fairy queen makes the final decision to give him a chance and he stays at the castle and their bond Grows from there
nebula is very "i go with what i think feels right" and kind of a dumbass and fairy queen is very cautious and tries to keep him from not getting his shit rocked by pissing off phan phan too many times
despite nebulas nature he is a very loving freak of nature (endearing) and is SO thankful for fairy queen giving him a chance to be somewhere. he eventually finds his own footing outside of being fucked up and evil tho he still stays w the queen as its just easier
the two falling for eachother is entirely unintentional, but they just sorta.. went with it? fairy queen was nervous bc "oh god is this actually okay for me to do" (mostly due to royalty stuff) but the two mesh together as a couple very well! nebula makes sure she isnt overworking herself w royalty stuff and fairy queen always checks on nebula making sure hes alright (being apart of a hivemind fucks you up as much as he doesnt like to admit it)
nebula also makes her laugh a lot. a jokey guy :)
tldr : i am not immune to opposites attract

Had a fun blacklighting session last night with the amateur entomologist group, here are a few of my observation pics In order: - A cute, lichen-looking Epinotia I wasn't able to ID to species - Ligyrus (formerly Tomerus) relictus, one of the only dynastinae (rhinoceros beetles) found where I live - Catocala sp., photo wasn't great unfortunately so I'm not sure which out of 2 possible species it is - Habrosyne scripta, fairly common but a beautiful drepanid that's always fun to see - Cisseps fulvicollis, smaller lookalike of the virginia ctenucha - Ischnura verticalis - very common species but I don't often see odonates at light traps - Tropisternus lateralis, a hydrophilid, this species in particular looks a lot like some dytiscids to me but the clubbed antennae are a surefire giveaway for hydrophilidae - Corixidae sp. - Parapoynx badiusalis, good example of how cute crambids are - A really cute ichneumonid, but probably not identifiable from photo - Argyresthia calliphanes - pay attention to micromoths! So many of them are absolutely stunning - Nemapogon sp. (maybe granella?) - Ennomos magnaria - Elophila icciusalis - Cerastipsocus venosus - new species for me, their common name is "tree cattle" and the clusters they form on trees get called herds. Felt really big for a psocodean The area had a lot of habitat variety, with multiple light traps being set near a wetland, forested areas (mainly yellow birch with some other hardwoods, and conifers- mostly balsam fir) and a sandpit. I have a lot more but I also have specimens to get around to pinning so I won't spend too long on posts haha, here's some uncropped photos of the sheets though

y’know the little tail thingies that luna moths and other moths have. that has a purpose!! it throws off bat echolocation so they can’t be found as easily :]
there’s a type of moth called a clearwing/sesiidae moths that mimics the appearance of a bee/wasp to avoid getting eaten!
did you know the ennomos alniaria moth is the cutest little man ever and I adore him? (/silly) their non-scientific name is the canary shouldered thorn and I think that’s cool :]
some moths make little squealing noises when they get spooked! they’re just like me fr <3
there are some moths that can survive underwater! like little fish but better /silly
rosy maple moths like to snuggle which is adorable and the best thing ever
they do a little shake dance to warm themselves for flying. like doin a little stretch to prepare for takeoff
they’ve got silly lil bug eyes and are adorable and whimsical and I love them so so much LOOK AT THESE LITTLE GUYS!!

"What will become of me? It would be awful to run away in fear from all these Trojans. But even worse if I am captured here alone! Zeus made the other Greeks take flight. Why does my spirit even ask this question? I know a coward leaves the battlefield. A champion must stand his ground and fight, ready to strike or suffer any blow."
As he was thinking these things in his mind, the ranks of Trojan warriors with shields drew near him and surrounded him -- and brought trouble upon themselves. As hounds and hunters surround a wild boar just as he emerges out of dense woodland with his jaw agape, gnashing his bright white tusks -- on every side the hunters lunge at him and though they hear his grinding teeth, they face the fierce opponent -- just so, the Trokan warriors surrounded Odysseus, the leader loved by Zeus, who fought against them with his long sharp spear, and leapt at Deipites and stabbed down through his shoulder, and then slaughtered Thoon, and Ennomos, and then Chersidamas as he was climbing from his chariot. Odysseus thrust underneath his shield and speared his crotch. He fell down in the dust. His fingers clawed the earth. Odysseus left these to die and used his spear to strike Charops, the son of Hippasus, the brother of wealthy, godlike Socus. Socus hurried to help, stood near Odysseus, and said,
"Fabled Odysseus, insatiable in your desire for trickery and pain, today may be the day on which you kill both sons of Hippasus and take our arms and stand in triumph over both of us -- or else my spear may strike and slaughter you!"
With this, he struck him on his balanced shield. The mighty spear went through the shining bronze and thrust into the decorated breastplate and sliced off all the flesh around his ribs. But then Athena stopped it going deeper, into his innards, and Odysseus realized that the wound had not been fatal. He stepped back and told Socus,
"You poor fool! You will die horribly. For now, you stopped me from fighting with the Trojans. But I will you this very day, dark death is coming for you. My spear will conquer you and you will give your life to Hades, and success to me."
Then Socus turned around to run away -- but as he turned, Odysseus implanted his spear between his shoulder blades and drove it into his chest, and with a clash he fell. Godlike Odysseus cried out in triumph,
"Ah, Socus, son of Hippasus, the skillful tamer of horses -- now your end, your death has overtaken you, with no escape. Poor fool! Your father and your royal mother will never close your eyes when you are dead. The birds of prey will flap their wings around you and rip your flesh. But when I die, the Greeks will honor me with proper funeral rites."
- The Iliad, translated by Emily Wilson
