Speakers of non-English languages of the UK and Ireland wanted!!

Since it’s World Mother Language Day today (February the 21st), I’m thinking of doing a series of posts on the native non-English languages of the United Kingdom and Ireland, with some information and short interviews. 

For this, I am looking for both native speakers/signers and learners (with or without parentage/heritage of the language in question) of the following languages:

- Scottish Gaelic

- Irish

- Welsh

- Any sign language of the United Kingdom or Ireland (e.g. BSL)

- Any other minority language indigenous to the United Kingdom or Ireland. By this I mean primarily spoken only within the UK or Ireland as a minority, or spoken very little elsewhere. For example: Cornish, Manx, Shelta, or Anglo-Romani, not languages like Polish or Bengali that are minority within the UK but have a significant speaker base elsewhere. (I am aware that I am fishing for some of these *cough* Cornish *cough*...but you never know!)

- Any language or variety that you speak that you feel is linguistically / culturally distinct from Standard English that you would like to inform more people about. For example: Shetlandic, Scots, Ulster Scots. 

I don’t have anything finalised yet, but if you would be wiling to speak to me about some text-based interviews for the sake of qualitative and informative tumblr posts, please send me a message!

(NB: if I have used any names of languages that are not preferred, tell me and I will change them. I don’t know a lot about the non-Celtic and non-Germanic languages here, which is part of my reason for wanting to make this series of posts in the first place.)

It's been a while since the game released, and I saw some people kept saying stuff like "those who let Astarion ascend is insane / need therapy / are evil / ruin the arc"

I mean, it's a GAME. The dev put the choices there for players to choose, which means that you can pick the one you like. If you don't like it, then don't choose it.

I can't see the point of insulting (apology for my lack of better words) others, for their choice in the GAME?? like of course you can express your opinion on certain plot structure / endings but it's really unnecessary to say hurtful words to other PLAYERS.

prince Steve being betrothed to princess Nancy since he was 11 or 12 years old, but they only start interacting in person when he's 15 and he falls head over heels for her, since he already had this whole idea of being a better King than his father (and a better father than his father), being faithful, having a lot of kids and loving his Queen until he died.

and then a few days before their marriage at the ripe age of 16 ('cause you know, they had to marry as quick as possible for kingdoms to stay in peace or some shit) Princess Nancy gets drunk and calls him bullshit, calls their relationship bullshit and it breaks Steve heart since it wasn't bullshit to him, he really loved her, but after that he has no desire to go forward with the marriage since he wasn't willing to marry someone who didn't love him back

so with his heart broken and the clothes on his back he runs away, he grabs a horse from the royal stable and fucking books it, doesn't care where he is going, doesn't pay attention to were he's going, he just wants to get far away from the castle, from the kingdom and from the life that maybe wasn't completely his own.

and along the way he meets the kids and Eddie (and maybe Eddie could be a creature? a witch? or maybe just some guy that turns Steve's world upsidedown and shows him what real love is 😔)

Hagging out May 2023 - Infusions

Staying extremely topical, this month I developed a small obsession with the hagberry, or Prunus padus. In Sweden, the time between the flowering of the hagberry and the lilac is known as the most beautiful time of the year and this time around I felt it with a passion. Spring was very cool over here, which meant it became more drawn out and this magical time where every meadow looks like my understanding of Paradise extended into a couple of glorious weeks.

This was around the time when @graveyarddirt let us know the theme for this month's Hagging Out, and I knew immediately that I needed to do something with the hagberry flowers. May is always super busy so I was worried I wouldn't have time to collect the flowers before they were gone, but luckily I found a perfect tree on my way home from work (gonna revisit said tree for berries later in the year I hope!) and another one on my way to an appointment - this is why it's good to always carry some kind of receptacle by the way.

I spent two evenings removing blossoms from stems in a blissful state and infused half of them in vinegar for I believe 10-14 days, and the other half in wine for about a week. I think I might have overdone it with the wine as my entire fridge smelled of bitter almonds for a while, but I haven't had occasion to try it yet. I'm figuring if the flavour is too strong I might dilute it with more wine. I haven't tried the vinegar yet either but it's got a wonderful smell and I believe it'll do very well as a way of bottling this beautiful time of year.

The bottle on the left is my third project: bear garlic oil. This I've already used in a couple of salads and it's fantastic. Previous years I've mostly used the bear garlic for pesto and it's delicious but it's gone before you know it. This is an attempt to enjoy it for longer!

Re-Ingesting media in a language you're learning is so fun because

You get to reexperience media you like with a new lens

If it's a good translation (or if the version you first saw was a translation) you get to learn some cultural elements as well ex: yawn is bostezo which I most likely would not have learned in a class

Its literally feels like a puzzle using context clues, what you remember of the original version you read, and the language you already know to figure out what it says. Me and my mom (who has a limited amount of spanish for medical purposes) literally just leaned over a Spanish copy of heartstopper to figure out a sentence and it was fun when our guess was mostly correct ("boy meets boy" is translated to "un chico conoce a otro" which we translated literally to "a boy gets to know another") and

You really get to see how far you've come in a tangible because in the span of a school year I went from recognizing a few words (due to my standardized "living in California" education) to being able to almost entierly understand the prologue which I'm aware is not a lot I would not be able to properly hold a conversation but it feels like a very real measurement of improvement rather than whatever my spanish grades are

Literally the best way to continue learning after getting your basic grammar down, highly reccomend

Ok I'm sorry but why do native english speakers always refer to € as euro? it's euros omg like 5€ = 5 euros not 5 euro. Euro is the currency, euros is the monetary units. That's like someone saying 30 dollar instead of 30 dollars, for example.

I am a native English speaker technically, but I've lived in the Netherlands for most of my life so there's a caveat. I grew up speaking British English, but now my English has become very Americanized since American English is used internationally more (I almost never use British slang any more for example since nobody understands that shit outside the UK lmao) and obviously there's a big Dutch influence in the way I speak English too (I often speak dunglish more than anything when I'm talking to Dutch speakers)

I think from what I've seen English and American people tend to say "euros" plural, since you'd also say "pounds" and "dollars". I think Irish people often say "euro" singular, but correct me if I'm wrong. So it varies. I think the reason I say "euro" is because of the Dutch influence: in Dutch you'd always say "euro" singular when referring to the price of something. So a Dutch person would absolutely say "5 euro" instead of "5 euros" (I actually just checked my tags on the post where I was talking about currency and I switched back and forth in those tags lmao that's just how it is)

I don't think there's an objectively correct way to say it, and honestly I don't really care if "euro" singular is incorrect lol you understand what I'm saying so I think it's fine
