"With “green corridors” that mimic the natural forest, the Colombian city is driving down temperatures — and could become five degrees cooler over the next few decades.
In the face of a rapidly heating planet, the City of Eternal Spring — nicknamed so thanks to its year-round temperate climate — has found a way to keep its cool.
Previously, Medellín had undergone years of rapid urban expansion, which led to a severe urban heat island effect — raising temperatures in the city to significantly higher than in the surrounding suburban and rural areas. Roads and other concrete infrastructure absorb and maintain the sun’s heat for much longer than green infrastructure.
“Medellín grew at the expense of green spaces and vegetation,” says Pilar Vargas, a forest engineer working for City Hall. “We built and built and built. There wasn’t a lot of thought about the impact on the climate. It became obvious that had to change.”
Efforts began in 2016 under Medellín’s then mayor, Federico Gutiérrez (who, after completing one term in 2019, was re-elected at the end of 2023). The city launched a new approach to its urban development — one that focused on people and plants.
The $16.3 million initiative led to the creation of 30 Green Corridors along the city’s roads and waterways, improving or producing more than 70 hectares of green space, which includes 20 kilometers of shaded routes with cycle lanes and pedestrian paths.
These plant and tree-filled spaces — which connect all sorts of green areas such as the curb strips, squares, parks, vertical gardens, sidewalks, and even some of the seven hills that surround the city — produce fresh, cooling air in the face of urban heat. The corridors are also designed to mimic a natural forest with levels of low, medium and high plants, including native and tropical plants, bamboo grasses and palm trees.
Heat-trapping infrastructure like metro stations and bridges has also been greened as part of the project and government buildings have been adorned with green roofs and vertical gardens to beat the heat. The first of those was installed at Medellín’s City Hall, where nearly 100,000 plants and 12 species span the 1,810 square meter surface.
“It’s like urban acupuncture,” says Paula Zapata, advisor for Medellín at C40 Cities, a global network of about 100 of the world’s leading mayors. “The city is making these small interventions that together act to make a big impact.”
At the launch of the project, 120,000 individual plants and 12,500 trees were added to roads and parks across the city. By 2021, the figure had reached 2.5 million plants and 880,000 trees. Each has been carefully chosen to maximize their impact.
“The technical team thought a lot about the species used. They selected endemic ones that have a functional use,” explains Zapata.
The 72 species of plants and trees selected provide food for wildlife, help biodiversity to spread and fight air pollution. A study, for example, identified Mangifera indica as the best among six plant species found in Medellín at absorbing PM2.5 pollution — particulate matter that can cause asthma, bronchitis and heart disease — and surviving in polluted areas due to its “biochemical and biological mechanisms.”
And the urban planting continues to this day.
The groundwork is carried out by 150 citizen-gardeners like Pineda, who come from disadvantaged and minority backgrounds, with the support of 15 specialized forest engineers. Pineda is now the leader of a team of seven other gardeners who attend to corridors all across the city, shifting depending on the current priorities...
“I’m completely in favor of the corridors,” says [Victoria Perez, another citizen-gardener], who grew up in a poor suburb in the city of 2.5 million people. “It really improves the quality of life here.”
Wilmar Jesus, a 48-year-old Afro-Colombian farmer on his first day of the job, is pleased about the project’s possibilities for his own future. “I want to learn more and become better,” he says. “This gives me the opportunity to advance myself.”
The project’s wider impacts are like a breath of fresh air. Medellín’s temperatures fell by 2°C in the first three years of the program, and officials expect a further decrease of 4 to 5C over the next few decades, even taking into account climate change. In turn, City Hall says this will minimize the need for energy-intensive air conditioning...
In addition, the project has had a significant impact on air pollution. Between 2016 and 2019, the level of PM2.5 fell significantly, and in turn the city’s morbidity rate from acute respiratory infections decreased from 159.8 to 95.3 per 1,000 people [Note: That means the city's rate of people getting sick with lung/throat/respiratory infections.]
There’s also been a 34.6 percent rise in cycling in the city, likely due to the new bike paths built for the project, and biodiversity studies show that wildlife is coming back — one sample of five Green Corridors identified 30 different species of butterfly.
Other cities are already taking note. Bogotá and Barranquilla have adopted similar plans, among other Colombian cities, and last year São Paulo, Brazil, the largest city in South America, began expanding its corridors after launching them in 2022.
“For sure, Green Corridors could work in many other places,” says Zapata."

Don’t Worry; PHATMOTO is Your All-In-One Motorcycle
Since the 1990s, bicycles and motorbikes have replaced cars in the market. The invention of bicycles, engine kit for a bicycle, engine for bicycle, and bikes was an idea that was persuasive everywhere. Do we still act in the same way today? We are merely considering our advantages and utilizing the fuels that are now accessible. Our ecology is being damaged by gasoline and diesel. These fuels only serve to increase global pollution. Environment-related problems will continue after this. The most serious issue of our time—global warming—is impacting the environment significantly and changing nature in many ways, including the climate.
Tumblr media
Don't worry; Phatmoto offers you their gas motorbike and eco-friendly bicycle at reasonable prices. Phatmoto's motorbikes and gas motorbikes are highly known for promoting environmental preservation. In this article, we shall go through all the features of Phatmoto gas motorbikes and bicycles. Phatmoto has created gas-powered bicycles, bicycles with gas motors, and bikes with gas motors that do not contribute to pollution.
The Ultimate Characteristics of a Phatmoto's Engine for bicycles
Phatmoto has created gas motors for bikes and bicycles. The following characteristics are listed below:-
Decent & Classy Designed: Phatmoto was explicitly designed as a dual-purpose gas-hybrid bike that makes it significantly easier to ride when pedaling alone and doesn't restrict the engine on bicycle when under gas power. A pedal, gas motor, or hybrid power can power it.
Developed Engine for Bicycles: Phatmoto's bicycle frame is specifically developed, engine on bicycle, from the ground up to conceal its fuel tank internally covertly, carefully encapsulate the drivetrain to prevent accidents, and firmly bolt its motor to a built-in frame mount.
Easy Pull-Start Lever Engine: Phatmoto chose a four-stroke engine on bicycle with a simple pull-start handle and an on/off switch for fast and effortless riding.
Easy to Start Handle Engine: With the 79cc OHV 4-stroke gas bike engines from Phatmoto with an automatic clutch, anyone can travel up to 100 miles at a speed of 25 mph while using less than a gallon of fuel.
Reliability: Phatmoto is made to prevent bicycle burns from motorized cycling mishaps caused by the hot engine. It has an engine shield, a muffler cage, and a protective gearbox casing.
Fuel Economy: The Phatmoto can drive more than 100 miles on a single gallon of gasoline. There is no requirement for an oil/gas combination to work on ordinary gas.
Are these Phatmoto’s Bikes safe to drive on the roads?
Phatmoto's 79cc OHV 4-stroke gas bike engines for bicycles with automatic clutch are powerful and enable riders to cover up to 100 miles at speeds of 25 mph while using less than a gallon of fuel.
Phatmoto's hot engine burns from motorized cycling accidents are reduced because of its dependability. It has a muffler cage, an engine shield, and a protective gearbox casing.
Phatmoto has a fuel efficiency of over 100 miles per gallon. No oil/gas mixture is required for it to work; only standard gas.
Everyone is familiar with the morning and afternoon driving styles.
Everyone in this world is pressed for time and runs red lights in that circumstance, which results in an accident.
Who will look after our safety while we are driving?
Every person owns a car, bike, or bicycle, and even a single person needs a car for comfort. This results in an increase in the number of automobiles on the road. Bicycles and bikes can be used by a single person, which will regulate the amount of space on the road. Phatmoto designed its bicycle and bicycle engine with the needs of people in mind. Their gas-powered bicycle, which is very comfy, looks like an adventure bike. Yes, there are:
Shimano 7-speed gears are a novel design proposed by Phatmoto. Pre-assembly is the best feature of Phatmoto products.
Just bolt the engines for bicycles to the frame using an integrated mount after attaching the handlebar, seat, and front wheel.
Now, despite the incline, you may continue pedaling at a comfortable pace.
Gas motorbikes and bicycles made by Phatmoto have a sensor that warns you when you're approaching close to breaks.
Every motorcycle and bicycle in Phatmoto has a top speed of 100 mpg.
Our websites have videos you can easily watch to understand more about gas-powered bicycles and motorcycles.
Conclusion
Why do we spend cash on vehicles? Purchasing a vehicle is done so that you can travel comfortably and conveniently. However, we neglect to protect our planet in that race. Phatmoto built its bicycles with human comfort in mind, including rear disk brakes that warn you of impending collisions. Therefore, we look forward to the day when our children can operate these new products as well as young people. Order right now, and you'll get home delivery and a separate invoice in the mail.

[Tangerine highways melt into the sky’s yawn. A typewriter sneezes as clouds pass it by. Coffee drips from the stars like melted crayons. The engine hums in tune with a laughing cactus. Bicycles race the wind, but the air wins on foot. A trumpet plays chess with a stray sandwich wrapper. Mountains hiccup, sending postcards to the sun. The diner serves infinity, sliced with butter. A train forgets its name, but keeps on going. The night swallows a sock and never spits it back.]

I’ve been messing around on Wikipedia this evening, and I stumbled across an article for the Boynton Bicycle Railroad. And…
Tumblr media
My jaw hit the floor when I saw this.
This is the article in question, if you want to read it. The sources cited seem to say that the engine didn’t get past the demonstration range, so I guess it’s a bit obscure. Does anyone out there have more info on this railroad and this engine? I have to know more now, lol.

Apparently my dad is a roller skating MAESTRO and I had to learn this from little brother's ex but still bestie talking about like, YEARS AGO and they'd all three gone roller skating and despite apparently not having skated in nigh on two decades he not only skated circles around them (proficient and active skater), he did it doing twirls and shit with his hands behind his back. This man has a bad back, bad hip, and knee issues. His normal walk is probably most akin to a shamble. BUT ACCORDING TO MY SOURCES, on skates? GRACEFUL AS A SWAN I am quoting btw
And I just have to sit here and stew in the fact that my beloved father is magically adept with ANYTHING that has wheels, and I happen to be woefully inept with that very same group -_-

Do Now:
Describe how the rowing bike is able to function competitively with the peddle bikes. Draw a diagram to show how each bike acquires its necessary kinetic energy.
Then, write your opinion of which bike seems more fun, easier, or otherwise preferable and why.
