Calculating how many homunculi we take with us in Ender Magnolia.
It's been a few weeks since the early access was released and while I have not played it, I have seen enough of other people that I know I want to play this already. Still, after watching all these gameplay videos a question remained: how many homunculi do we journey with as Lilac?
Possible spoilers so don't read this post if you don't want to.
In Ender Lilies it was straightforward: find a (Mini-)Boss, beat it, and gain its abilities. That's the story for almost all 26 spirits in the game, except the umbral knight. By that logic, I was convinced that it would be the same mechanic in Ender Magnolia. That is not the case.
When watching other people play, it's obvious that there's a clear split in homunculi: those we use for combat and those we don't. To gain homunculi you can fight bosses but not all of them will join you or will be combat-orientated. Other people might gift you their homunculi and this homunculi can be for combat or not at all. So it's hard to figure out an actual number.
Let's start with the first category. In the early access, you can fight 7 bosses, but not all bosses we take with you. In fact, three of these will give you items that will allow you to upgrade your other homunculi and unlock different abilities. It was revealed that Lilac will have access to 30 different skills for combat. Each combat homunculus has three abilities. With a simple calculation, we can easily figure out a number: dividing 30 with 3 = 10 combat homunculus.
Tumblr media
We have already seen 5 of these: Nola, Litho, Yolvan, the Shackled Beast, and Muninn. So that means we still have 5 homunculi for combat we have not seen yet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That leaves us with two homunculi in our second category: non-combat skills. The first is the dog/wolf Hati, our fast travel. (Not me being bitter about the fact I can't fight with this thing). The second is an actual boss we can fight Garm. Garm functions like Gerrod's Giant's Hammer from the first game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now this category is a lot harder to calculate. Technically we can look at Lilly's movement abilities from the first game, but this is unreliable as both Siegrid and Silva's skills were replaced with the clothing Lilac wears. However, this is the only clue we have, at the very least we can calculate a rough number.
In Ender Lilies the main bosses gave Lilly 9 skills. These were: Guardian's Leap (Siegrid), Giant's Hammer (Gerrod), Witch's Bubble (Eleine), Guardian's Wings (Silva), Bloody Knight's Claws (Ulv), Executioner Hook (Hoenir) Piercing Spectral Lance and Dash (both Julius) and Unlock (Faden). We already know three of these so let's look at the remaining six.
I believe we'll get equivalent skills for Ulv and Julius Piercing Spectral Lance. Ulv because who doesn't love a good wall climb ability and the piercing lance because in the lab Lilac wakes up there's a wall we cannot break with any revealed homunculi.
Tumblr media
Eleine's skill is also highly likely, as I do believe there is a sewer area that's still locked at the moment. This can be a clothing upgrade. I only have one (weak) argument for this: Eleine alongside Siegrid and Silva do not appear in the overworld when you play as Lily. All the other spirits with movement skills do. The Dash skill I doubt we will see as Lilac can already run on her own. At most a clothing upgrade that allows her to run even faster.
That leaves us with Hoenir's and Faden's skills. On both of these, I absolutely have no clue. I have not watched the early access videos super closely as I still want some surprise when I do actually get to play it, but from what I have seen there doesn't appear anywhere we could use these skills. At the same time, we might get to use these kinds of skills in only the Central and Upper Stratum.
It's also possible that Ender Magnolia will have unique movement skills that Ender Lilies does not have.
So the summarise the total number of homunculi in category two is 2 (Confirmed; Haiti and Gram) + 2 (high likely; Ulv and Julius) + 3 (Maybe's; Eleine, Hoenir, and Faden) = minim 4 to possible 7 or more.
In conclusion category one plus category two = 10 + 4 or 7 = 14 to 17 homunculi in total that will journey with us. If not more.
Well, that's my take on it at least, would love to hear other people's opinions.

Chilltobember: Ancient
The first part is a little idea I had about Lily. The second part is unrelated and explores Silva's character.
@chilltobember
Fandom: Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights
Rating: T
Words: 627
Warnings: none for the first part; swearing, death, and body horror for the second part (under the read more)
Read on Ao3
The rain never ceased. Lily didn’t mind the way it soaked her hair and dress. She secretly loved the way the water felt on her skin. Droplets even clung to her eyelashes. She raised her arms above her head to catch the rain as it fell, twirling in place.
The Umbral Knight watched her splash in the puddles, their face hidden by their helmet. But Lily still caught the amusement in the way one hand rested on their hip and the other dangled at their side. Her ever-present knight rarely dropped their guard, for good reason with the Blighted always lurking, but even they deserved a rest. She had plenty of other spirits to keep an eye on their surroundings.
Lily knew her duty as a White Priestess—to purify the Blight. The very rains she joyfully let wash over her also brought the rot to the kingdom. Yet Lily also allowed herself this moment of selfishness. She had no memories of her life before awakening in the parish, and she had precious few opportunities to make ones not spoiled by fear and death.
But she wanted to carve something of a life out for herself and take what joy she could.
***
Silva’s wings hung heavy on her back. She flexed them, the primary feathers brushing the bones strewn on the ground as she crouched over the body of one of her sister-guardians. Others were nearby—she could hear their screams as the Blight consumed their flesh.
The headless statue watched over her, its own broken wings flared out in a symbol of what hers were supposed to represent. Guardian. Silva almost laughed at herself. What a failure she was—abandoning Fretia in that goddamned abyss and unable to save any of her fellows in the catacombs. Silva would take Groa’s harshest punishment if it meant the Chief Guardian was still alive.
The base of her wings itched where they met her back itched. Silva equally wanted to tear the vile things from her body or snap them open and fly far beyond this damned kingdom. But she hadn’t managed true flight before the curse of the Blighted rains fell. Even if she tried, the rain would melt and twist her flesh just as it had done to the rest of the kingdom.
The body of her fellow guardian convulsed, then fell limp. Not a quick death, but a death nonetheless. Better than living in agony as a Blighted. Silva lifted the head with numb fingers. The face was ravaged, the guardian habit torn and bloodied. She could almost believe it was Siegrid. A sob caught in her throat. If her sister were dead or Blighted—that would be what would break her.
Siegrid, please be alive, she silently begged to the guardian statue. If Silva could not save Fretia or herself, then let her sister live.
The headless statue’s arms were held out, as if offering an embrace. Silva remained curled up on the ground, still as the statue above her and the corpse in her arms. She wondered if the Blighted would find her this way. The itching on her back worsened. Hot pain spread over her shoulders. In the edges of her vision, Silva saw the ends of her wings stained red. She didn’t remember how. But other memories were already slipping away, replaced by an ache in her head and her bones.
She exhaled, once, twice, and still didn’t move. Let the Blighted find her. The rot was already in her body. She’d accepted it herself when the Verboten mages placed those wings on her back. Or maybe she’d simply turn to stone. A second wing statue condemned to fall to dust.
A preferable fate to the growing pain in her body and numbness in her mind.

"I must.... Protect Her!"
Guardian Siegrid from ENDER LILIES: Quietus of the Knights!
I really wanted to try to incorporate a rosary in this somehow, and when I couldn't do it in the composition, I added a bit of a motif to her ball and chain! Siegrid is very coooool! ;u;

Stop to Smell the Lilies
spoiler warning! gotta divulge some things in order to talk about the game!
before I get into anything else, let me first say that Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights is goddamn beautiful. like, intensely beautiful
Example 1:
Tumblr media
and Example 2:
Tumblr media
absolutely gorgeous.
Tumblr media
Ender Lilies is a game from Live Wire/Adglobe and published by Binary Haze Interactive!
it's a game that I would strongly recommend to anyone who likes Action Platformers. if you're into Metroidvanias, this is a must-play.
if you read my Ikenfell review, you know I am an fool for good OSTs. and once again, I am a delirious fool for Ender Lilies' fantastic music (thank you Mili)
Tumblr media
I opened the game and just knew I was gonna be in for it because the main theme, Lily, and Rosary - Intro were beautiful even if I didn't realize it at the time. but the real hit came with Ulv's theme (Bloom Intro/Outro) a little over halfway through the game.
all the tracks are sombre and intense (when it needs to be). they fit the atmosphere of the setting and the story to a t
the music is amazing. listen to it even if you don't play the game.
aside from the music, the gameplay is pretty fun! mechanics are solid!
the spirit system is interesting! collecting spirits that all do different things is very nice and allowed me to play widely different styles should I choose to. I like Ferin, the first spirit you get in the game, because of the nice attack progression, especially once you get his upgrades. the range and damage are both at least average, which is a great tool to use as a main attack as well as a supplementary attack (for other spirits). also ranged spirits are kinda overpowered, even if they have an ammo limit. Eleine was supremely useful in every fight I encountered and there was never a reason not to use her
Tumblr media
additionally, the relics were also pretty great! all of them were useful in their own right (aside from the being replaced as you progressed in the game, but that's normal). finding these definitely gives you a better feeling of progression in the game
and in the same vein as the irk I had with Bloodstained, Ender Lilies has a forward tumble dodge. which thankfully changes later (as soon as the 4th boss) in the game to a regular dash
it was pretty funny looking at the beginning. I had a laugh watching the tumble the first couple of times. but learning how to use it is kind of difficult. just like the Bloodstained backstep, the forward tumble insists on a specific style of play, this one being more aggressive unless you turn Lily around and tumble the other way. but! you'd never have the time for that unless you're preparing for an attack ahead of time. and you'll end up having to dodge into your enemies to avoid getting hurt
the story! oh the story was so good. as usual, Ender Lilies provides lore in the little item descriptions (in this case of the relics) and scraps of notes and the like strewn across the map. however, unlike some other metroidvanias, Ender Lilies feeds you lore after every boss in the form of character-specific cut-scenes.
Tumblr media
it might feel a bit fragmented at first, but as you piece together all the different storylines, the narrative connects and concludes in a very fulfilling way. it definitely helps that characters are actually related to each other in small ways and the lore snippets you find while playing does enhance your understanding of the characters
case in point, the two Guardians, Siegrid and Silva, had an interesting dynamic, both wanting to protect each other as well as their Priestess. their sisterly love for each other was both heartwarming and heart wrenching as you read/watch through their stories
one last thing to note is the 100% completion, which was relatively easy in that you just have to find everything. kill the last boss a few times.
Tumblr media
would definitely recommend doing the 100% because it's no different than playing the entirety of the game and there aren't any speedrunning achievement like a certain game that I'm waiting for the sequel of.
as always, enjoy the games you love

Warning: Massive Spoilers for Ender Lilies Below
Neutral B: Dark Witch/Healing Prayer Lily summons Eleine to fire a barrage of magical projectiles that home in slightly on enemies; press B repeated to fire consecutive projectiles, capping at 3 at a time. If players hold B instead, Lily will instead consume a Prayer to heal herself (limited to three per stock.)
Side B: Guardian’s Wing’s/Spectral Lance Lily dashes forward a short distance, passing through enemies and their attack while moving. If players use Side B again mid-dash, Lily will call forth Julius to perform a lunging attack that strikes enemies in front of her.
Down B: Fretia’s Ring Lilly briefly summons a white barrier around herself that blocks enemy attacks; blocking melee attacks with this cause the enemy to stagger.
Up B: Executioner’s Hook Lilly calls on Hoenir to launch his grappling hook, attempting to latch onto the nearest ledge; this can even work if the ledge is below Lily, assuming she’s in range.
A: Umbral Cuts Lily calls forth the Umbral Knight to perform a three-hit sword combo on her behalf. *In air: Lily calls on the Umbral Knight to perform a spinning cut in the air.

Back A in Air: Lily summons Silva mid-air, who strikes foes with a horizontal hammer swing.
Smash A Side: Guardian Silva Lily summons Silva, who smashes foes in front of her with a powerful hammer swing.
Smash A Down: Mad Knight Lily summons Ulv, who slams the ground with both claws to create a shockwave in front of him.
Smash A Up: Guardian Siegrid Lily summons Siegrid to swing her flail around, hitting enemies up to two times.
Final Smash: Last Rites Lily summons Silva in her Blighted form to call forth four twisted pillars of energy around her, repeatedly damaging enemies. Foes caught in Silva’s attack are then dealt a powerful sword blow by the Umbral Knight, who sends them flying.

OOH OOH OOH IF WE'RE ASKING FOR ENDER LILIES HEADCANONS: Got any ones for Gerrod, Umbral Knight, Hoenir, Seigrid, and Silva?
gotta go to bed soon but I can toss these out before I do
Gerrod:
- one of the reasons he took so long to lose himself to the Blight and never transformed despite being infected for a very long time was because he'd essentially made peace with his situation. was it a GOOD situation or a good coping mechanism? probably not, but he was so determined not to harm the people he wanted to protect that he staved it off
- the villagers ostracized him not entirely out of fearing him exactly, but the kingdom's punishment for being seen sheltering or otherwise aiding a Blighted person. Gerrod understood this so he didn't particularly hold it against them, which links back into headcanon 1.
- horribly good at tactics and strategy (he was a commander!). never play strategy games against him unless you're willing to lose like a billion times because he shows no mercy
- dadjoke-tier sense of humor
- gets really intense in battle, but is honestly fairly chill outside of it
Umbral Knight:
- so fucking tired, which isn't really headcanon as much as strongly implied by the game, but he tries to hide it for Lily's sake. Lily tends to fuss over him anyway because she understands.
- been bound by the pact long enough that he no longer really remembers what it was like to be a living person; he probably still has memories of his past life knocking around in there somewhere but they're a lot of scattered flashes that don't make a lot of sense to him any more, and the 'sleep' he went into that scrambled his memories super didn't help. Who was he before becoming an Umbral Knight? It's lost now. This bothers him a lot but he doesn't talk about it.
- Speaks to Lily in the language of the Ancients rather than whatever language the people of Land's End use. Wants to teach her to write and read with it, so she doesn't lose the original language of her people entirely. Wishes he'd paid more attention learning it back when he was still yknow alive.
Hoenir:
- probably singlehandedly responsible for raising the literacy rate of the pre-apocalypse generation of Dark Executioners due to his ability to read and write. In the interests of fairness while teaching Julius, he taught everyone else who was willing as well.
- absolutely fucking terrible at parsing that people might love and care for him because he has this terrible streak of self-loathing about his job. He's not proud of it even if he loves the kingdom he serves; he views himself as irreversibly stained because of it.
- in direct opposition to the last point, actually a pretty good dad who tried to raise Julius with as much love and care as possible. He distanced himself later on to give Julius the best chance possible to become a knight and not be burdened by attachments to him and ended up accidentally giving him a fucking emotional complex instead oops
- Took full advantage of the metric ton of lamps around the castle to shadow Julius because he was a huge worrywart. Is my son eating well is he okay is he happy where he is etc etc etc. Never actually visited him because he didn't want to jeopardize Julius' career.
- When Lily is having trouble resting or sleeping, he sings her the lullabies he used to coax Julius to sleep when he was a child.
Siegrid:
- Eventually realized she deeply missed Silva and wanted to be friends with her again but it was too late to do anything about it by the time she did, so she sort of just..left things as they were. Ended up not wearing the ornament Silva made for her out of guilt rather than rejection.
- Has an explosive temper and is a bit more reckless than Silva.
- Talks to Lily the most about the priestess that she shares her name with, since she knew her the best. Reassures her constantly that she wouldn't mind they shared a name and they probably would have been friends.
- Braids Lily's hair sometimes.
Silva:
- Fusses over Siegrid despite trying to keep her distance as a spirit. They eventually patch things up.
- Became good friends with Fretia over the course of being her Guardian. Currently wracked with guilt over how things turned out and thinks she's a failure as a guardian for letting Fretia sacrifice herself.
- More coolheaded than Siegrid, but more prone to overthinking and overwhelmingly takes responsibility for things she couldn't possibly have known about and aren't her fault. The Responsible One, basically.
- The type of person who thinks mean thoughts and then feels bad about thinking mean thoughts and then just bottles everything up in there and it's kind of a disaster.
