#end of year book list

Something I’ve noticed for awhile is that I often get comments from people about how they are surprised how I always come up with theories and try to guess what might happen and they “could never do that” themselves. I want to say: yes you can! There’s honestly a shortage of Nevermoor theories and ideas and speculation and etc and I want to see MORE!!!

Want to talk about how Morrigan’s mom is actually secretly alive? How the Scholar Mistresses are a Wundrous Act? Do you think the Tempus Divinity looks like an owl, or do you think Weaving and Ruination would be met together? Or have you ever thought about how this one line, from Chapter 19 of Nevermoor, about Betram Crow actually means he was a Cursed Child? Whatever it is you want to talk about: GO FOR IT!!!

I personally find it very fun to go sort of “English class mode” and look at the text in front of me and think about what different things might mean and analyze it and even overthink it to an unnecessary (but fun!) amount. But that’s just me and how I like to approach things! You don’t need to make long posts and quote specific lines if that isn’t your style. The big thing to remember is that so much can happen in the next six books, so throw any idea out there! You never know what twists and turns will be thrown at us. I think it’s fun to share these ideas and discuss with other people— sure, maybe there’s just something you missed when reading, but perhaps some new ideas spawn might from it. Some speculation could even serve as inspiration for fics!

There are some theories and thoughts that I’ve posted that have been “debunked” when I reread a book, or when someone pointed out something, or even just when something had a real-world basis that I as an American didn’t catch. But it was still fun to think about it all, and there’s some bits and pieces that I see as notable and worth considering. I think most of the Silverborn Masterpost is going to be “wrong”, but if just 1% of it is “correct”, even indirectly, I will take that as a win. I know it feels like during the hiatus everyone’s talked about everything, but I hope that the incoming communal reread (fingers crossed) and obviously Silverborn brings some speculation back to the fandom because I want to discusssssss!

Made a faintly insane list of of every animated movie I have good enough memories of to feel confident ranking, although some of them I would probably move around if I saw them more recently....

Some of these books are already on my shelves other are on my immediate wishlist. As this year I am not doing any challenges or tbr lists, it will be fun to see if I end up reading all these books I am currently interested in. I tried to focus on stuff I am interested in right now, and I tried to mix both fiction and non fiction as well as Italian books and English ones.

Peccato Criminale by Eleonora Rai (I know I will be reading this because it's part of the materials for a class I'll take in the second semester but I am so excited about it. It's about gender and abuse in the ecclesiastical system during the modern era and focuses on a specific trial in a monastery)

Monsters by Claire Dederer

La Strega E Il Capitano by Leonardo Sciascia (a short modern classic I've had on my shelves for years inspired by actual historical accusations of witchcraft here in Italy)

Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield

Miti Greci (a collection of greek myths from different ancient sources, it looks like each chapter collected fragments for different gods and heroes, so I am very interested to see what they decided to include)

Elektra by Jennifer Saints

The Myth Of Sisyphus by Alber Camus

I Poteri Delle Tenebre by V. Ásmundsson (this is basically a translation of the first Icelandic translation of Dracula. Which is famous because it took so many liberties it ended up being a completly different novel)

Meanwhile dad DISOWNS her

Here are the 12 books I read this year. Still trying to finish Blood Over Bright Haven before the year is done. About halfway there. My goal was 8 this year.

My thoughts below:

The Red Rising series lived up to its expectations, and surpassed it. The first book was kind of dull, but holy shit, Golden Son and Morning Star had my jaw on the ground. Actually NOT overrated. Will be starting Iron Gold in 2025.

Project Hail Mary felt so simple and so cliche and I get very agitated with all of the hype surrounding it. Like, it was not terrible, but oh my gosh, I like my sci-fi to be a bit more complex and challenging. It had the potential, but the dialogue sucked and the ending was trash. I’m also annoyed that it’s gonna be a movie. I see no hate for it online and that to me is a red flag LOL.

The Godfather is a classic that everyone should read. The audiobook is pretty great, too. Have seen the movies many times, but had never read the book before.

I thought Gideon the Ninth was confusing until I read Harrow, and just like with Red Rising, the second book blew away the first one. I LOVED Harrow. I loved that I was so confused, and I also loved when I figured it out. I’m scared to read Nona, but plan to in 2025.

Someone To Build A Nest In and Dreadful were basically “breather” reads for me, provided a mental break in between the others. They weren’t difficult reads. Nothing spectacular, but fun in their own unique ways.

I really didn’t like Crime and Punishment until a bit AFTER I finished it. I think I needed some time to think about it. Then I appreciated it. And it took me a bit to get into Piranesi, but then was absolutely hooked.

I picked up Blood Over Bright Haven before it made its rounds on tiktok, only because the bookstore was sold out of The Sword of Kaigen. Then I saw that everyone is saying this is one of the best reads this year. I’m 200 pages in and only just now getting interested. It seemed pretty cliche from the start. I’m not a huge fan of the stereotypical tropes between the main guy and woman, BUT I’m not done yet, so we’ll see if I change my mind!!

These are just my thoughts and opinions, and I recognize that I’m in the minority with some of these thoughts. And that’s okay! Looking forward to more reading in 2025!

This is my most gen z opinion but it takes wayyy too long to read. I have so many books that look interesting but I'd have to set aside 5-8 dedicated hours to read them. And you can't do anything while reading like you can with movies, so those really are dedicated hours. I should be able to absorb the contents in my brain.

I do think the wildest part of the Skyrocket/Connie concept is that Visaggio seemed to legitimately believe that Kon-El is like... a D-List superhero. Which is just like, a wild thing to believe considering the Comic Kon won in a fan poll hadn't even finished coming out at the time she pitched her idea.
