excellent question! this family and their sharp-toothed men will be the death of ... well, several community members of Collinsport, i suppose.

to start — Barnabas gets out of the box slightly differently than in canon, which colors his relationship to Roger and the rest of the household. Roger kills Willie after his attempted assault on Carolyn and Vicki (who is, by that point, his wife); Willie's mysterious disappearance and Roger's suspected involvement makes Jason that much more panicked, desperate, and correspondingly aggressive. Liz goes searching for the lost family jewels in a last-ditch attempt to buy Jason off, and, inadvertently, lets their ancient family sin out of the tomb.

ergo she's made Barnabas' thrall instead of Willie, but this goes unnoticed for a while — even though her brother would, in theory, recognize the signs, and his suspicions are raised, but she's already acting so much unlike herself with Jason around that he doesn't suspect anyone else of doing her harm. yet.

at the start, he and Barnabas get along very well, even before they discover their shared affliction: they're both relatively sophisticated, well-traveled, intelligent people, and for all that Roger decries Liz's emphasis on the Collins name, he leans towards familial connections instinctively (Roger hasn't got much in the way of friends outside of the house even in canon, and he's even more isolated as a vampire).

after he finds out Barnabas is also a vampire, things get a little more complicated, but overall, they're still friendly. Roger doesn't have much sympathy for Barnabas' relentless self-pity and decrying his doomed fate to live as a monster, because Roger on the whole enjoys his vampirism and has made a decent un-life for himself out of it (thanks in no small part to Vicki). but having someone like him around is a comfort in ways he wouldn't have expected, he's no longer solitary or uniquely monstrous out of the Collins family, he has someone else around through the night, and someone who understands the sufferings of bloodthirst and being shut out of the sun.

furthermore, Roger's very much interested in his family history and stories of the past, the building of Collinwood, Jeremiah's ships – and Barnabas was there. there's potential for some very interesting conversations about the past, and the arc of the Collins family history to the present, not to mention literature, travel, fashion, politics and the rest. Roger's his cousin's mirror in modernity in many ways, and that's something potentially interesting to explore: the world changes around them, but Collinses do not.

as an aside, they both have a funny sort of relationship to Burke. Barnabas hates him for his resemblance to Jeremiah and envies his friendship with Vicki and thinks he's crude, and Roger ... well. it's complicated. it's closer to antagonism than not, and Burke has tried to kill him once in this au, and Roger resents his flirting with Vicki, but then there's everything else with their past. so I don't think Barnabas' treatment of him would sit particularly well with Roger, he'd take the attitude of hey, only I can be a dick to Burke >:(

the definite fracture point is Barnabas imprinting on Vicki. Roger's already jealous and possessive by nature, and it's amplified by the supernatural nature of his relationship to Vicki (being closer, bodily and mentally; being necessary to each other; being, quite literally, sustenance) so he's already a little on edge when Barnabas starts paying attention to her, giving her presents, and appreciating the scenery — Barnabas doesn't, exactly, tend to have much in the way of moral inclination to leaving women alone when they have prior engagements, but it's fair to point out the irony of everything Roger was doing with his bloodbag governess when he was still very much a married man.

anyway: Roger finds foreign bite marks on his wife's neck, and he's understandably immensely upset by this. partially out of territorial sentiment, but he also knows Vicki, and he knows that she wouldn't have invited another vampire willingly — which means that she was forced, or hypnotized, or attacked in secret, and there's only the one potential suspect. this is already enough to lose his good will, but he might have been willing to let Barnabas go with a "hands off," had this discovery not lead to finding out what he'd also been doing to Liz. the combination of the two is unforgivable, and it's Barnabas' error to have made an enemy who is very personally aware of all his vampiric weaknesses, and Burke's already carved a stake.

Neo-Nazis and white supremacists are sharing Hitler-related propaganda and trying to recruit new members on TikTok, according to a new report from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) shared exclusively with WIRED. The TikTok algorithm is also promoting this content to new users, researchers found, as extremist communities are leveraging the huge popularity of TikTok among younger audiences to spread their message.

The report from ISD details how hundreds of extremist TikTok accounts are openly posting videos promoting Holocaust denial and the glorification of Hitler and Nazi-era Germany, and suggesting that Nazi ideology is a solution to modern-day issues such as the alleged migrant invasion of Western countries. The accounts also show support for white supremacist mass shooters and livestream-related footage or recreations of these massacres. Many of the accounts use Nazi symbols in their profile pictures or include white supremacist codes in their usernames.

Nathan Doctor, an ISD researcher who authored the report, says he began his investigation earlier this year when he came across one neo-Nazi account on TikTok while conducting research for another project.

He was quickly able to unmask a much broader network of accounts that appeared to be actively helping each other through liking, sharing, and commenting on each other’s accounts in order to increase their viewership and reach.

The groups promoting neo-Nazi narratives are typically siloed in more fringe platforms, like Telegram, the encrypted messaging app. But Telegram has become a place to discuss recruitment techniques for TikTok specifically: White supremacist groups there share videos, images, and audio tracks that members can use, explicitly telling other members to cross-post the content on TikTok.

“We posted stuff on our brand new tiktok account with 0 followers but had more views than you could ever have on bitchute or twitter,” one account in a Neo-Nazi group posted on Telegram about their outreach on TikTok. “It just reaches much more people.”

Others have followed suit. One prominent neo-Nazi has often asked his thousands of Telegram followers to “juice,” or algorithmically boost, his TikTok videos to increase their viral potential.

An extremist Telegram channel with 12,000 followers urged members to promote the neo-Nazi documentary Europa: The Last Battle by blanketing TikTok with reaction videos in an effort to make the film go viral. Researchers from ISD found dozens of videos on TikTok featuring clips from the film, some with over 100,000 views. “One account posting such snippets has received nearly 900k views on their videos, which include claims that the Rothschild family control the media and handpick presidents, as well as other false or antisemitic claims,” the researchers wrote.

This is far from the first time the role that TikTok’s algorithm plays in promoting extremist content has been exposed. Earlier this month, the Global Network on Extremism and Technology reported that TikTok’s algorithm was promoting the “adoration of minor fascist ideologues.” The same researchers found last year that it was boosting Eurocentric supremacist narratives in Southeast Asia. Earlier this month, WIRED reported how TikTok’s search suggestions were pushing young voters in Germany towards the far-right Alternative for Germany party ahead of last month’s EU elections.

“Hateful behavior, organizations and their ideologies have no place on TikTok, and we remove more than 98 percent of this content before it is reported to us,” Jamie Favazza, a TikTok spokesperson tells WIRED. “We work with experts to keep ahead of evolving trends and continually strengthen our safeguards against hateful ideologies and groups.”

Part of the reason platforms like TikTok have in the past been unable to effectively clamp down on extremist content is due to the use of code language, emojis, acronyms, and numbers by these groups. For example, many of the neo-Nazi accounts used a juice box emoji to refer to Jewish people.

“At present, self-identified Nazis are discussing TikTok as an amenable platform to spread their ideology, especially when employing a series of countermeasures to evade moderation and amplify content as a network,” the researchers write in the report.

But Doctor points out that even when viewing non-English-language content, spotting these patterns should be possible. “Despite seeing content in other languages, you can still pretty quickly recognize what it means,” says Doctor. “The coded nature of it isn't an excuse, because if it's pretty easily recognizable to someone in another language, it should be recognizable to TikTok as well.”

TikTok says it has more than “40,000 trust and safety professionals” working on moderation around the globe, and the company says its Trust and Safety Team has specialists in violent extremism who constantly monitor developments in these communities, including the use of new coded language.

While many of the identified accounts are based in the US, Doctor found that the network was also international.

“It's definitely global, it's not even just the English language,” Doctor tells WIRED. “We found stuff in French, Hungarian, German. Some of these are in countries where Naziism is illegal. Russian is a big one. But we even found things that were a bit surprising, like groups of Mexican Nazis, or across Latin America. So, yeah, definitely a global phenomenon.”

Doctor did not find any evidence that the international groups were actively coordinating with each other, but they were certainly aware of each others’ presence on TikTok: “These accounts are definitely engaging with each others' content. You can see, based on comment sections, European English-speaking pro-Nazi accounts reacting with praise toward Russian-language pro-Nazi content.”

The researchers also found that beyond individual accounts and groups promoting extremist content, some real-world fascist or far-right organizations were openly recruiting on the platform.

Accounts from these groups posted links in their TikTok videos to a website featuring antisemitic flyers and instructions on how to print and distribute them. They also boosted Telegram channels featuring more violent and explicitly extremist discourse.

In one example cited by ISD, an account whose username contains an antisemitic slur and whose bio calls for an armed revolution and the complete annihilation of Jewish people, has shared incomplete instructions to build improvised explosive devices, 3D-printed guns, and “napalm on a budget.”

To receive the complete instructions, the account holder urged followers to join a “secure groupchat” on encrypted messaging platforms Element and Tox. Doctor says that comments under the account holder’s videos indicate that a number of his followers had joined these chat groups.

ISD reported this account, along with 49 other accounts, in June for breaching TikTok’s policies on hate speech, encouragement of violence against protected groups, promoting hateful ideologies, celebrating violent extremists, and Holocaust denial. In all cases, TikTok found no violations, and all accounts were initially allowed to remain active.

A month later, 23 of the accounts had been banned by TikTok, indicating that the platform is at least removing some violative content and channels over time. Prior to being taken down, the 23 banned accounts had racked up at least 2 million views.

The researchers also created new TikTok accounts to understand how Nazi content is promoted to new users by TikTok’s powerful algorithm.

Using an account created at the end of May, researchers watched 10 videos from the network of pro-Nazi users, occasionally clicking on comment sections but stopping short of any form of real engagement such as liking, commenting, or bookmarking. The researchers also viewed 10 pro-Nazi accounts. When the researchers then flipped to the For You feed within the app, it took just three videos for the algorithm to suggest a video featuring a World War II-era Nazi soldier overlayed with a chart of US murder rates, with perpetrators broken down by race. Later, a video appeared of an AI-translated speech from Hitler overlaid with a recruitment poster for a white nationalist group.

Another account created by ISD researchers saw even more extremist content promoted in its main feed, with 70 percent of videos coming from self-identified Nazis or featuring Nazi propaganda. After the account followed a number of pro-Nazi accounts in order to access content on channels set to private, the TikTok algorithm also promoted other Nazi accounts to follow. All 10 of the first accounts recommended by TikTok to this account used Nazi symbology or keywords in their usernames or profile photos, or featured Nazi propaganda in their videos.

“In no way is this particularly surprising,” says Abbie Richards, a disinformation researcher specializing in TikTok. "These are things that we found time and time again. I have certainly found them in my research."

Richards wrote about white supremacist and militant accelerationist content on the platform in 2022, including the case of neo-Nazi Paul Miller, who, while serving a 41-month sentence for firearm charges, featured in a TikTok video that racked up more than 5 million views and 700,000 likes during the three months it was on the platform before being removed.

Marcus Bösch, a researcher based in Hamburg University who monitors TikTok, tells WIRED that the report’s findings “do not come as a big surprise,” and he’s not hopeful there is anything TikTok can do to fix the problem.

“I’m not sure exactly where the problem is,” Bösch says. “TikTok says it has around 40,000 content moderators, and it should be easy to understand such obvious policy violations. Yet due to the sheer volume [of content], and the ability by bad actors to quickly adapt, I am convinced that the entire disinformation problem cannot be finally solved, neither with AI nor with more moderators.”

TikTok says it has completed a mentorship program with Tech Against Terrorism, a group that seeks to disrupt terrorists’ online activity and helps TikTok identify online threats.

“Despite proactive steps taken, TikTok remains a target for exploitation by extremist groups as its popularity grows,” Adam Hadley, executive director of Tech Against Terrorism, tells WIRED. “The ISD study shows that a small number of violent extremists can wreak havoc on large platforms due to adversarial asymmetry. This report therefore underscores the need for cross-platform threat intelligence supported by improved AI-powered content moderation. The report also reminds us that Telegram should also be held accountable for its role in the online extremist ecosystem.”

As Hadley outlines, the report’s findings show that there are significant loopholes in the company’s current policies.

“I've always described TikTok, when it comes to far-right usage, as a messaging platform,” Richards said. “More than anything, it's just about repetition. It's about being exposed to the same hateful narrative over and over and over again, because at a certain point you start to believe things after you just see them enough, and they start to really influence your worldview.”

I've never been more heartbroken in my life.

I was gobsmacked in 2016, don't get me wrong. I was devastated and frightened and shaken beyond words. I even had to go behind a wall and collect myself at one point that horrible November 9th, 2016, after colliding with a man wearing a red MAGA hat at work. A good chunk of us at work talked amongst ourselves about it, offering each other comfort.

But this? This is different. I could imagine dumb people making excuses for voting for Trump in 2016 -- saying that they thought a businessman would be good for the economy, saying that they wanted someone who wasn't a "Washington insider" like Hilary Clinton. Sure, it was stupid, but people can be stupid. Quite frankly, a lot of people are stupid, in this country and otherwise.

But now? Anyone who voted for Trump now has voted for a man who not only rounded up immigrants and put them in concentration camps separated from their families; bungled the response to COVID-19 so badly that the American death toll easily surpassed every other country on Earth; has poisoned the Supreme Court to the extent that they overturned years of precedence with Roe V. Wade and has basically given Trump cart-blanche to do whatever he wants while he's president; was the first president in history to refuse to concede on election day; was impeached for crimes in office not once but TWICE; was instrumental to and passionately supportive of the full-on attempted coup at the U.S. capitol on January 6, 2021 that could've very easily resulted in the deaths of his own Vice President and multiple members of Congress; has spoken glowingly of despots like Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un and even said he will be "a dictator on day one" if elected again; has both used slogans originally used by modern American Neo-Nazis ("America First") and purportedly told one of his ex-subordinates that he wanted generals like Adolf Hitler's...but also has by the day proven more and more just how mentally inept, vindictive, and mean-spirited he truly is.

And unlike in his previous races, Trump is ahead in the popular vote too. We can't just blame this on the electoral college being antiquated and gerrymandered AF like in the Trump-Clinton or Bush-Gore elections. Even if all of the third-party voters in this country had grown a bloody brain cell and voted for Harris so as to show solidarity against Trump and his form of American fascism, it still somehow wouldn't be enough. We could potentially blame this on lower voter turn-out -- according to what I'm seeing so far, even with all the votes not counted in this race yet, it looks like there were far less votes cast this election than in the last one, though likely still more than the 2016 race. But even so, I don't think that's the only problem. I truly think there were just a lot of people who turned out en-masse to vote for Trump. And all I can think in regards to those people is...

This is beyond stupidity or even selfishness. This is cruelty. This is large swaths of people deciding that they want fellow American citizens to suffer -- because in their minds, if those people suffer, that'll somehow make them happy. This is a large chunk of America saying, "yeah, you know all that crap about 'liberty and justice for all'? Screw that, I want a 'strong man' to bully people different from me for my own amusement." It's not like that man will hurt them.

I had hoped. I had hoped, seeing the outpouring of support from liberals, independents, and conservatives for Harris/Walz. I'd hoped, seeing how many ex-Trump appointees were standing up against him, how much people were shouting their disdain for Project 2025 from the rooftops, and how many women were protesting in the face of Roe V. Wade being overturned. I truly had started to hope that America would prove we'd grown beyond our country's own original sin -- how our United States preached freedom for all while still being built on the backs of slaves and refusing to grant a vote to over half their population -- by electing a smart, successful, charismatic woman of color who sees our country as great in potential and wants us to pursue that potential as our first female president, rather than backtracking all the slow progress we've made over the last 200+ years.

But now...my hope has faded. My heart is in pieces and the world is so dark. I hardly know how I'll function at work tomorrow, even if I know somehow, I have to try. We'll all have to stand somehow. Somehow, someway...we'll have to find the strength. We'll have to stand, and we'll have to keep moving forward, even when it feels like we're a Little Mermaid walking on knives.

If there was one thing [Name] would be proud of, it would be her meticulous planning. Every single moment of her life was preplanned. If she hadn't been prepared, she was sure she wouldn't be the first in her family to attend university, let alone a prestigious one like Crownlands Imperial College.

Every interaction, every choice, and even the way she breathed was important ("two seconds in, two seconds out" she had told her roommate, Chiara Tyrell, once but had been met with a frightened look at that admission so she never brought it up again). Some would say it was more scripted than living but [Name] was more than content with that idea; she had gotten to where she was now from being able to prepare herself so well.

Every single moment in her life had led her up to the point where she was now and at the very moment was wondering what could she have done wrong to have the universe send Aeron Bracken to be a constant wrench at her job at Nyra's Nook.

Every Tuesday, like clockwork, he would come in after 12pm with his friends, making too much noise than necessary at a bookstore and almost always knocking something over or doing something to chase away the owner's orange tabby, Syrax, to the back of the store. And every time, [Name] would be where she would be around that time: behind the counter counting at the till.

[Name] ignored the growing dread in her chest as she saw Aeron slowly make his way over to her. She could see him send over a knowing look to his friends - a silent conversation that most definitely had to do with her from the way she spots Jorah Redwyne and Victor Wylde snickering and glancing her way.

"[Name]," Aeron calls over. He was unfortunately handsome, with his tall stature and pieces of his light brown hair tied away from his face. He could have been mistakened for en elf if he didn't dress like he just came off a boat from Ibiza every day. He leaned against the counter, offering her a smile as she spares him a glance. "You look pretty today."

"Thanks." She replies, pulling her attention back to the bills in front of her.

She prayed the silence continued, nervously meeting Syrax's eyes, who had settled herself beside her after Aeron walked in. Somehow, the cat was able to look just as annoyed as she was from the way her tail puffed and swayed whenever his friends laughed too hard. Had this been a different situation, [Name] would have found this funny.

[Name] could do nothing but commiserate with the cat until they left, which could have been 30 minutes to a couple of hours if Aeron had the time to spare. He stayed where he was, continuing to leer at her until she felt something push some of the hair out of her face. She jerked back, glaring at Aeron.

"I'm working Aeron." She states, motioning to area around them though he didn't seem to care.

"You know, people talk often about you." Aeron all but continues, eyes roaming over her. His nose wrinkled at the sight of her purple sweater and long denim skirt. "The workaholic who dresses like someone's gran."

Students like [Name] had been far and few at Crownlands Imperial College, most likely doing what she does when she isn't in class: working to pay for whatever school hadn't covered. She had been more than content with this; it helped keep her sane as she had to often hear about things she couldn't fathom to understand whenever she was in class with students who came back from holidays that stretched all the way past Essos.

Not to mention, the owner of the bookstore, Rhaenyra, never once mentioned about her family (though it would take an idiot to not realize she was an infamous Targryen) and treated [Name] like any other person.

Still, she wasn't able to escape the overwhelming gossip no matter how hard she tried to stay as reclusive as possible. Crownlands Imperial College, with all its academic glory, was still a small private school and nearly everyone knew each other. Combined with people who had not been barred or limited all their lives usually resulted in people like Aeron and his friends; bored rich children who did nothing but stay on top of the gossip and what everyone thought of who.

"People say a lot of things." [Name] counters.

"Aren't you at least interested to hear about you? They're not really in your favor..."

[Name] held off the urge to roll her eyes. She hadn't cared to think much about what anyone thought of her since she started university. She stayed silent, hoping that was enough of an answer for Aeron. Of course, he seemed to only take that silence as a means to push whatever agenda he had in mind today.

"You could change that, you know - there's a party at one of the houses this weekend. Come with me and I'm sure a few people will think otherwise of you."

[Name] frowned. He sounded smug, as if he was doing her a favor. Disgusting. Regardless, the discomfort and anxiety seemed to have crawled its way up to her as she felt Aeron and his friends look at her expectantly. Faintly, she could hear the ringing of the front door as she spoke up.

"I'm busy. I'm going out with someone this weekend." She replied hurriedly. A total lie; she had plans with Chiara to watch the second installment of the Halloween movies and another shift at the bookstore the morning of that same day.

Aeron brows raised, as if the idea that [Name] going on a date with someone besides him was unlikely. "Who?"

Her mind blanked at the question, the anxiety bubbling up in her like a teapot ready to explode. She prayed to the gods that she somehow found her way out of something, not wanting to backtrack her statement to Aeron Bracken of all people. She could only imagine what he would say to people -

THUD.

The sudden noise pulled her away from her thoughts as she stared at the new person beside them. His leather jacket was the first thing she recognized before finally familiarizing herself with the rest of him. He was a regular at Nyra's Nook, sometimes coming in to buy a book, sometimes to just walk around before he left. He was quiet and barely spoke above a whisper to her whenever she rang him up. She hadn't even known his name. She wasn't even sure he knew her as one of the employees from how he would barely look her in the eyes too.

So she hadn't known what possessed her to take one look at the mysterious regular as she says, "Him."

"Him?" Aeron says with a shrill. He motions to the man again. "You're going on a date with Benjicot Blackwood? Of all people?"

The man - Benjicot - blinked at [Name], as if finally registering the conversation included him. Her face burned as she felt the weight of his stare on her face. Embarrassment flooded through her as she could also feel Aeron's look of shock as well. What was she supposed to say in this situation? She felt her mouth open and close, like a fish out of water, trying to decide what to say at this very moment in time.

"I--"

"Is there a problem with that, Bracken?" Benjicot says. He looked at the man, eyes blazing as they glared at one another. Finally, Aeron turns to [Name], a look of rage on his face that makes her take a step back.

"He's the last person you want to date, [Name]." Aeron starts, nearly leaning into her had there not been a counter between them. "Blackwood would chew you up and spit you out the minute he gets his hands on you."

Benjicot shoves Aeron off the counter, putting himself in where Aeron once stood, his back facing [Name]. "You're mistakening me for yourself. [Name] can make her own choices too; she does what she wants for herself."

The tension could be cut with a knife in the room and [Name] wanted more than anything to hide away from all of this. The beaded entrance behind her makes noise and she turns to see Rhaenyra. She frowns [Name], pressed against the corner of the counter. Her eyes light up in recognition at the two men.

"The last thing I need are broken shelves and glass to replace at this store - which I'm sure neither of your parents want to pay for." She starts, a voice [Name] recognizes when she reprimands her children whenever they come to work a shift. "Take it outside before I call someone."

Aeron huffs, shoving Benjicot's shoulder with his before walking out the door. Benjicot rolls his eyes before turning to the counter again. Whatever he was just a minute ago disappeared as he faced the women in front of him. His eyes zeroed in on [Name], who felt like she was swallowing molasses as she looked at anywhere but him.

Finally, Rhaenyra spoke. "Are you alright?"

"No." [Name] says hurriedly. "I think I ate something bad. I have to go home."

She didn't wait for anyone to say or question anything as she made her way to the back of the store. Her ears rang as she grabbed her bag and jacket and just about ran out through the alleyway door. She was sure she was going to be out of a job from the way she handled that confrontation and for just walking out the store, but she couldn't care any less at this moment.

[Name] could only remember Benjicot Blackwood's leather jacket and the lie that would most definitely go around the school the soon.
