Week 4 Blog Post Due 9/16
Q: Why didn't the internet have a space or place for African Americans before 1995?
The internet has long been controlled by white, rich men who have historically subjugated racial minorities. The 1950s saw a time of civil rights followed by the 1970s women's movement yet the internet did not see a surge of African American users, creators, etc until 1995. This was a movement that people of color and women joined in order to refuse to be deterred from their space. They had a right to the internet and the narrative it promoted of people of color.
Q: How can having a “normal” name affect a person?
Those with “normal” aka white sounding names are known to be the recipients of white privilege whether they are white or not. “Normal” names are automatically assumed to belong to white individuals and are used to compare against all other names. Those with a name like Jim, John, or Carol will be 50% more likely to get called back after a job interview regardless of work experience. Online algorithms aligned white names with pleasant sounding names and anything else as something displeasing.
Q: Are algorithms the “New Jim Code”?
According to the text by Benjamin, racial codes have always been used to facilitate social control. The example used in the text is California’s gang database in which 87% of names on the list are of Black and Latinx individuals as young as one year old. These people are put onto a list and then held under close scrutiny. They are monitored more closely and are subjected to a loss of rights. These lists are difficult to change and as much as people want to believe algorithms are colorblind, they are actually known to emphasize color. These lists amplify hierarchies and are used to target POC.
Q: Why do we trust sites like Google Search that are known as advertising agencies?
Google has a monopoly over many other smaller search engines. Google is also advertised as a reliable source even though it has been known to show racist images and results when certain keywords are searched. These racial glitches are only fixed once people using the search engine fight back and use their voices to show Google that they will not tolerate these racist algorithms.
Q: Do we have control over our identities?
While we may have control over our names as we get older and choose to change them, we do not have control over our perceived identities. When people look at me, they see and perceive me to be a white woman even if that is not how I personally identify. People label others based on things they can see. Our identities can hurt our potential employer opportunities, educational opportunities, and aspirations. Intersectionality also places many people at a disadvantage. Not only is someone poor, they may also be a person of color or a woman which intersects into more disadvantages.

Life of Virginia Building
AKA, General Assembly Building 911-915 East Broad Street
Original
Built, before 1877
Demolished, probably 1923
2nd Building
Built, 1912
Expanded, 1923, 1955, 1964
Demolished, 2018
Architects, Clinton & Russell (1912, 1923), Marcellus Wright Associates (1964)
[RVCJ03] — original building on Broad Street, circa 1903 — note Old City Hall visible at left
So if you've been wondering about that hole in the ground with the propped-up wall at Ninth and Broad, here's the juice.
Richmond has four local insurance companies—three fire and one life. The three fire companies are the Mutual Assurance Society, the Virginia Fire and Marine Insurance Company, and the Virginia State Insurance Company. The life company is the Life Insurance Company of Virginia.
[RVCJ03] — general office interior view, circa 1903
The total capital, surplus and reserve of the two joint stock fire companies January 1, 1892, was $996,000. The Mutual, being what its name implies, makes no showing of capital. The total assets of the three fire companies then was $1,932,078. Their total receipts in 1891 were $580,000.
The Life Insurance Company of Virginia had over $400,000 in receipts in 1891. Its capital stock is $100,000.
(Library of Congress) — Sanborn Fire Insurance Map from Richmond (1905) — Plate 7 — showing the original location prior to the 2nd building
There are some thirty agencies for insurance, local and State, at Richmond. Nearly every home and foreign company of any note doing business is represented here. The Liverpool and London and Globe Insurance Company has one of its five American branches here, and from the nature of its organization, with directors resident here, may be considered practically a local company.
July 2019 — 911-915 East Broad Street today
The grand total of insurance business here is, by recent reports, $1,318,812 annually: $545,666 fire, $701,813 life, and $71,333 accident. The total insurance upon the property endangered by fire here in 1891 was $809,647; the insurance loss was $196,190. The insurance men of the city are organized as a Board of Underwriters, George D. Pleasants, president; Ro. E. Richardson, secretary.
The Life Insurance Company of Virginia is an old company and a solid one. On December 31st, 1892, its annual statement was rendered. That statement shows it to have $100,000 capital stock, and a surplus as to policy-holders of $156,962.52.
(Rocket Werks RVA Postcards) — 2nd building, constructed in 1906
At the same time its assets were $819,029.86, and the total amount of its insurance in force, $9,832,327.00, an increase in assets, over the year preceding, of $140,286.27 and in the matter of insurance in force of something over $1,552,398.00. It has paid to its policy-holders, since its organization, $1,226,320.39 and during the last six years its premium income has increased nearly five-fold. Its total income, last year was $507,752.35. It is a company that pays its death claims immediately upon presentation and approval of the proofs of death.
[RVCJ03] — John G. Walker, President & T. William Pemberton, 1st Vice President, circa 1903
Its policy-holders now number over 70,000, scattered through many States of the Union. The results already attained by this company show that it has had intelligent and conservative management.
G. A. Walker, its president, has been in the insurance business for the past eleven years, and has displayed great executive ability in his management of the Company. James W. Pegram, its secretary, has spent twenty- two years in this company’s service ever since it started, in fact—and twenty-six years in the life insurance business, and has ably seconded the efforts of the president in making this the most successful Southern Life Insurance Company.
[RVCJ03] — James W. Pegram, 2nd Vice President & W. L. T. Rogerson, Secretary, circa 1903
The directors are these officials and John G. Walker; T. William Pemberton, a capitalist of this city, who has been connected with the company for nearly twenty years as a director, and one of its vice-presidents; Everett Waddey, of the Everett Waddey Printing Company; General F. JI. Cameron; Major George Johnston; W. J. Walker; F. P. Cooke, of T. F. Minor & Co., who succeeded his father, the late General John R. Cooke, in the board of directors, and John F. Slaughter, Jr., cashier of the Fidelity Bank of Durham, N. C.
Messrs. Coke & Pickrell, attorneys, are the counsel of the company. The large and increasing business of the company requires the employment of over fifty persons in the Richmond office.
[RVCJ93] — original offices in the Hanewinkel Building at Ninth & Main Streets
Among the stockholders of the company are James B. Pace, president of the Planter’s National Bank; G. A. Walker, James Pleasants, W. J. Walker, T. William Pemberton, James W. Pegram, John G. Walker, of Richmond, Va.; Fred. Taylor, of Norfolk, Va.; Colonel Frank Reed, of Washington, D. C.; Major George Johnston, of Alexandria, Va., and many others.
The Home Offices of this company are situated at the corner of Ninth and Main streets, in the building shown in the engraving accompanying this matter. [RVCJ93]
July 2019 — looking towards the former location of the Hanewinkel Building, Ninth & Main Streets
That was true in 1893. Sometime between the publication of the 1893 and 1903 editions of Richmond, Virginia: The City on the James, the company moved from the Hanewinkel Building to the Broad Street location, made possible by the construction of Old City Hall in 1886. Until that year, the future offices of the Life Insurance Company of Virginia had been the city’s main municipal building following the demolition of Original City Hall in 1874, a depressing coda to the Municipal War and the Virginia Capitol Disaster of 1870.
(Richmond Magazine) — 2nd building under construction, center left, circa 1910— Cook Collection, The Valentine
The new space must have been too small for their needs because by 1910 the company had embarked on constructing their own building on the same block, designed by the King of Neoclassicism, Alfred Charles Bossom of Clinton & Russell.
The initial building, known as the Life of Virginia Building, is considered one of the finest early 20th century Beaux-Arts-style buildings in Virginia. The main structure was built in several parts. The first building, facing Capitol Square, is five stories high and was completed in 1912.
(Historic Richmond) — detail of Corinthian pilasters with American eagles, cherubs, and winged horses, 2015
The 1912 building features three-story-tall Corinthian pilasters with American eagles, cherubs, and winged horses. This is the only example of Pegasus in classical columns in all of Richmond. Bossom’s likely source for the Pegasus capitals was Andrea Palladio’s drawing of a Pegasus capital from the Temple of Mars Ultor in Rome. The original entrance to the building is on the southwest corner of the façade, facing Capitol Street. This entrance has “handsome bronze gates and an elaborately carved stone frontispiece with a semicircular arched pediment supported by scroll brackets.” The original entrance was glazed to make a window, but the exterior appearance has remained unaltered.
[ADR] — 1st addition, circa 1982
As evidence of the company’s rapid growth, the company built an addition in 1923 on the north side of the initial building, with a façade along Broad Street. The eleven-story tower, also designed by Clinton and Russell, reflects a “restrained classical style.” The 1923 addition features a cornice with modillions and dentils, doric order pilasters with a decorated band of anthemia and a balustrade along the roof edge. The building was designed as a Beaux-Arts high rise, which was a popular design for official buildings during the early part of the 20th century. The 1923 addition was further connected to the Life of Virginia portion of the building in 1955 with a six-story structure.
[ADR] — showing the 1st addition (left) and the modernist 2nd addition (right), circa 1982
In 1965, Life of Virginia commissioned a second addition designed by the local architectural firm, Marcellus Wright and Partners. The steel framed structure of this addition artfully and purposefully uses concrete paneled faces to mimic the architectural divisions and bays of the earlier structures. Soon after its completion, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts included the Marcellus Wright and Partners addition it in its publication celebrating the Commonwealth’s finest architecture. William B. O’Neal, author, notes the differing floor heights rarely seen in most modern high-rises add “vivacity of proportion that is expressed with firmly modeled corners, rhythmic window divisions, and strong structural elements.” Robert Winthrop called the tower “the most sensitively designed highrise in the city.” (Historic Richmond)
July 2019 — showing the remaining facade of the 1912 building
The Commonwealth of Virginia also had a need for additional space, purchased the entire complex in 1975, and renamed it the General Assembly Building. Unfortunately, the state was not a good steward and allowed the building to decay to the point that the only choice was to demolish and start over.
It was not a popular decision and sparked much debate about how to preserve at least some portion. In the end, it was determined that the 1912 building held the greatest architectural significance. When the rest of the structure came down, its facade remained, and it will be incorporated into the new assembly building currently under construction.

How Many Votes Do Republicans Need To Repeal Obamacare

How Many Votes Do Republicans Need To Repeal Obamacare
Schumer: ‘we Can Work Together Our Country Demands It’
Senate Republicans fail to get necessary votes to repeal and replace Obamacare
Until the end, passage on the Health Care Freedom Act, also dubbed the skinny repeal, was never certain. Even Republicans who voted for it disliked the bill.
The skinny bill as policy is a disaster. The skinny bill as a replacement for Obamacare is a fraud. The skinny bill is a vehicle to getting conference to find a replacement, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said at a Thursday evening news conference hours before the vote alongside fellow Republicans McCain, Ron Johnson and Bill Cassidy, before the details were released.
The skinny repeal was far from Republicans campaign promise of also rolling back Medicaid expansion, insurance subsidies, Obamacare taxes, and insurance regulations.
Many Republicans who did vote for it said they were holding their nose to vote for it just to advance the process into negotiations with the House of Representatives.
The legislation included a repeal of the individual mandate to purchase insurance, a repeal of the employer mandate to provide insurance, a one-year defunding of Planned Parenthood, a provision giving states more flexibility to opt out of insurance regulations, and a three-year repeal of the medical device tax. It also would have increased the amount that people can contribute to Health Savings Accounts.
Leigh Ann Caldwell is an NBC News correspondent.
Kevin Mccarthy: Republicans Can Repeal Obamacare Before Replacing It
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said Tuesday that Republicans could repeal Obamacare before finding a replacement for it, according to the Hill.
I dont think you have to wait, McCarthy told reporters. My personal belief, and nothings been decided yet, but I would move through and repeal and then go to work on replacing.
But healthcare experts, including some Republicans, say this approach could cause chaos for Obamacare enrollees and the insurance market during that period of time between the repeal of the law and when a replacement is found.
McCarthy and others have called for a transition period where Obamacare would be phased out gradually over a period of two years or another specified period of time after a repeal of the law is passed.
Even so, critics have said that insurers could leave the system once they know the law is being phased out, leaving no options for those enrolled in Obamacare for 2018.
Insurers have already left the exchanges in some states, leaving people with only one insurer to choose from when purchasing plans on the exchange.
The task of repealing and replacing Obamacare at the same time, however, could prove difficult for Republicans.
They need just 50 votes in the Senate to repeal the core of the healthcare law, but they need 60 votes in the Senate to pass a replacement to the law, which means the replacement would have to have support from Democrats as well as Republicans.
What We Learned In The House: Support For A Repeal Bill Can Happen Quickly
One lesson Ive taken from the past year of covering the Obamacare repeal-and-replace debate is that these bills look doomed to fail up until the moment they dont.
Take, for example, the American Health Care Act that the House passed this May. Within 48 hours, the bill went from doomed to sailing right through. The most puzzling part was how little happened in between.
Moderate Republicans like Rep. Fred Upton were critical of the bill because of how it could affect Americans with preexisting conditions. Upton publicly came out against the Obamacare repeal bill on May 2 in an interview with a local radio station. But literally the next day, he announced that a small tweak to the bill would win his support.
The tweaks didnt actually fix the core problems that Upton had with the bill. He secured a small pot of funding to help those with preexisting conditions and used that as cover to vote for a bill that would cause 22 million Americans to lose coverage.
Other Republicans quickly fell in line behind Upton, even though no major changes were made to quell their concerns, and the American Health Care Act passed the House on May 4.
Of course, some Republican plans that look doomed are, in fact, doomed. But at this stage, its really hard to tell the difference. Sometimes, as we saw in the House, a small amendment can make all the difference in flipping the key no votes to yes. Sometimes, as weve seen in the Senate, the votes just arent there.

Trumps Executive Action Could Erode Marketplace Built Under Obamacare
Attempts to repeal portions of the Affordable Care Act have failed in the past several months, leading President Donald Trump to issue an executive order expanding access to cheaper, less comprehensive health care plans.
The order, signed on Oct. 12, instructs federal agencies to remove certain limitations on “association health plans” and expand the availability of short-term health plans, both of which can skirt certain minimum coverage requirements included in the Affordable Care Act and state laws.
These changes will not immediately take effect; federal agencies will have to figure out how to act on Trump’s directions.
The executive action orders agencies to explore ways in which the government can expand access to short-term health plans, which are available to individuals on a three-month basis and meant for people who are in-between health care coverage plans. Under the instructions, association health plans would be allowed to sell plans across state lines; those plans allow small businesses to band together to create cheaper health care plans that offer fewer benefits.
The order was intended to create more options for individuals seeking health insurance and help stimulate competition among insurers. Some health policy advocates worry that it could disrupt the insurance marketplace in a way that would drive up health care costs for elderly individuals and people with medical conditions.
It will be months before changes are seen in the marketplace.
Likely To Vote No: 1 Senate Republican
Alaskas Lisa Murkowski also voted against all three versions of repeal in July, criticizing what she viewed as an overly secretive and partisan process to write the various bills and raising concerns about the Medicaid cuts. She has not slammed the GOP repeal effort as aggressively as Collins, but she does not sound especially inclined to back Cassidy-Graham.
So if Collins and Murkowski are no votes, Republicans need all four members below to vote yes.

Senate Gop Tries One Last Time To Repeal Obamacare
McConnell and his lieutenants will gauge support for the bill this week in private party meetings.
By BURGESS EVERETT and JOSH DAWSEY

Republicans say Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wont bring up the bill if there is any chance of failure, given the dramatic collapse in the summer. | john Shinkle/POLITICO
Obamacare repeal is on the brink of coming back from the dead.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his leadership team are seriously considering voting on a bill that would scale back the federal governments role in the health care system and instead provide block grants to states, congressional and Trump administration sources said.
It would be a last-ditch attempt to repeal Obamacare before the GOPs power to pass health care legislation through a party-line vote in the Senate expires on Sept. 30.
No final decision has been made, but the GOP leader has told his caucus that if the bill written by Sens. Lindsey Graham and Bill Cassidy has the support of at least 50 of the 52 GOP senators, he will bring it to the floor, Graham and Cassidy say. That would give Republicans one more crack at repealing the Affordable Care Act, a longtime party pledge.

Some Republicans believe that if the bill were put on the floor Monday, it would have the support of 49 senators.
Obama: Gop Blocked 500 Bills
President Barack Obama is railing against congressional Republicans, telling a Hollywood crowd that the midterm elections are crucial because the GOP is willing to say no to everything.
The president, speaking at a Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee event Wednesday evening hosted at Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horns home, said Republicans have been obstructionist since even before he took office.
Their willingness to say no to everything the fact that since 2007, they have filibustered about 500 pieces of legislation that would help the middle class just gives you a sense of how opposed they are to any progress has actually led to an increase in cynicism and discouragement among the people who were counting on us to fight for them, Obama said of Republicans.
The conclusion is, well, nothing works, the president continued. And the problem is, is that for the folks worth fighting for for the person whos cleaning up that house or hotel, for the guy who used to work on construction but now has been laid off they need us. Not because they want a handout, but because they know that government can serve an important function in unleashing the power of our private sector.
Obama opened by saying that he is in trouble at home, because in 2012 he had told his wife, first lady Michelle Obama, that he had run his last campaign.

Wild Cards: 4 Senate Republicans
Utahs Mike Lee and Kentuckys Rand Paul have been continual roadblocks for Republicans during the repeal process, fighting it from the right and essentially opposing any legislation that leaves Obamacares rules and regulations in place. Lee has been noncommittal about Cassidy-Graham. But Paul has attacked it, arguing that it still gives states the choice and ability to effectively leave Obamacare in place. He sounds like a hard no right now, but Im skeptical he would cast the vote to block an Obamacare repeal bill. The reason: Paul has cultivated a brand as a strong conservative, so a vote that would, in effect, save Obamacare would not be ideal for him.
Kansass Jerry Moran, meanwhile, has been a vocal defender of Medicaid, so its not clear if he would back a bill that cuts Medicaid as much as Graham-Cassidy does.
McCain, for his part, was a key vote against Obamacare repeal in July and it seemed like a capstone to the Arizona senators career as a self-described maverick. He urged Republicans just this Sunday not to engage in a hurried process that skips over the relevant committees and doesnt include Democrats. Cassidy-Graham is being rushed, hasnt gone through the committees for hearings and has no Democratic support.

Gop Has A Month To Pass Obamacare Repeal With 51
Republicans vote to repeal Obamacare
If Republicans want to try again to repeal the Affordable Care Act with just a simple majority, they only have until the end of September to do it.
Thats according to Sen. Bernie Sanders, the ranking member on the Senates budget committee. According to Sanders, the Senate parliamentarian declared Friday that the Senates 2017 budget resolution, which gave reconciliation instructions to repeal Obamacare, will expire at the end of the month.
That means that Republican senators will either have to pass a new budget to repeal health care with a simple majority or they will have to have 60 votes a filibuster-proof majority to make changes to Obamacare.
The parliamentarians office declined to comment to CNN, saying its policy was not to speak with the media. CNN has reached out to Republicans on the Senate budget committee about whether they agree with Sanders assessment.
Todays determination by the Senate parliamentarian is a major victory for the American people and everyone who fought against President Trumps attempt to take away health care from up to 32 million people, Sanders said in a statement. Now that the parliamentarian has determined that Senate Republicans cannot use reconciliation instructions to repeal the Affordable Care Act beyond this fiscal year, we need to work together to expand, not cut, health care for millions of Americans who desperately need it.
CNNs Manu Raju and Ted Barrett contributed to this report.
Don’t Miss: How Do Republicans Really Feel About Trump
Trumps Promise To Repeal Obamacare Is Now In Limbo
President Donald Trump expressed disappointment after Republican lawmakers’ failure to muster enough votes to repeal Obamacare placed one of his loftiest campaign promises in limbo.
A series of defections by Senate Republicans scuttled two separate efforts to dismantle the sweeping U.S. health care law put in place by Trump’s predecessor, President Barack Obama.
“We’ve had a lot of victories, but we haven’t had a victory on health care,” Trump told reporters July 18, as it became clear the latest Republican legislative efforts would fail. “We’re disappointed.”
A slim margin of error constrained GOP efforts to repeal and replace Obamacare and forced a delicate balancing act between the party’s conservative and moderate members.
But defections by Sens. Jerry Moran of Kansas and Mike Lee of Utah on July 17 brought to four the number of Republican senators to publicly oppose the bill , effectively killing the repeal-and-replace plan. Senate leadership could only afford to lose two Republican votes for passage.
Senate Republicans then turned their attention to a measure that would repeal major parts of Obamacare over two years, in theory buying lawmakers enough time to agree on a replacement plan before the Affordable Care Act, often called Obamacare, was largely dismantled.
“I did not come to Washington to hurt people,” Capito said in a statement. “I cannot vote to repeal Obamacare without a replacement plan that addresses my concerns and the needs of West Virginians.”
Gop Aims To Kill Obamacare Yet Again After Failing 70 Times
Chris Riotta U.S.Donald TrumpAffordable Care ActObamacare
The GOP may be down for the count in it’s failed attempts to repeal and replace former President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Actbut don’t count Lindsey Graham out just yet.
President Donald Trump met with the South Carolina senator and one of his fiercest critics in the Republican party on Friday night to discuss a bill that would effectively block Obamacare funding, according to two sources familiar with the meeting and legislation currently being drafted. Republican officials tell Politico Graham’s bill could potentially reach 50 votes after a series of failed attempts in recent weeks to both repeal and replace, then simply repeal, Obama’s landmark health care initiative.
After last week’s latest attempt to remove provisions of Obamacare ended with Sen. John McCain’s dramatic “no” vote effectively keeping it alive along with two other senators, Newsweek has found at least 70 Republican-led attempts to repeal, modify or otherwise curb the Affordable Care Act since its inception as law on March 23, 2010.
“I had a great meeting with the President and know he remains fully committed to repealing and replacing Obamacare,” Graham said in a statement Friday night. “President Trump was optimistic about the Graham-Cassidy-Heller proposal. I will continue to work with President Trump and his team to move the idea forward.”
How many more times that may take, is anyone’s guess.

Dylan Scott guides you through the fallout of the Covid-19 pandemic and the health care policies that matter most.
Analysts expect the bill would lead to millions of Americans losing coverage, similar to previous Republican repeal bills. Republicans might not even know the full extent of the new bills effects on the health care system because they are likely to vote on the bill before the Congressional Budget Office can release its full analysis. The CBO is rushing to at least a provide a bare-bones analysis by early next week. The Senate has now scheduled two hearings for Monday and Tuesday on the bill.
Senate Republicans need 50 votes to pass this bill, meaning only two Republicans can defect. As my colleague Dylan Scott has pointed out, Republicans always have 45 or so votes to repeal Obamacare. Its the last five that are the battleground.
Several senators who opposed the last Obamacare repeal effort havent taken an official position yet. So the vote could fail just like past Republican attempts. But all signs we have from Capitol Hill suggest that it could pass. Cassidy is actively working to persuade senators to vote for the bill and reaching out to governors, too, to pressure their senators.
Ive had governors calling up their senators, 14 or 15 governors, saying you need to get on this, Cassidy told reporters at a Friday morning briefing.
Gop Health Care Bill Would Cut About $765 Billion In Taxes Over 10 Years
But sentiment has changed on Obamacare, with Gallup Poll finding this month that 55 percent now approve of the ACA.
The AHCA faces a much tougher road in the Senate, and if it dies there, some of those vulnerable GOP members may have made what ends up being a futile vote.
But there’s another side to consider, too. For Republicans who have made the refrain “repeal and replace Obamacare” their mantra for seven years now, not acting on their signature campaign promise could risk depleting enthusiasm among their core voters, who they also need to turn out in November 2018 to combat a Democratic base that is energized against President Trump.
And after the first attempt at repeal failed in an embarrassing fashion, House Republicans and Trump badly needed a win. That’s why they took a victory lap in the White House Rose Garden on Thursday afternoon, even though the bill is far from becoming law.
“The American people expected us to deliver on the promises we’ve made and that’s what House Republicans have just done,” National Republican Congressional Committee communications director Matt Gorman wrote in a memo after the vote.
Republicans have pointed out that more insurance companies are pulling out of state-run exchanges, and the GOP bill will cut about $765 billion in taxes over the next decade, NPR’s Scott Horsley reported, though mostly for wealthy Americans.
Thank you @RepMimiWalters and for standing in front!

From Military to National Service: My Road to VISTA
By Gary Norton, AmeriCorps VISTA member serving with NeighborWorks
Gary Norton (standing) performing a community training during his service.
I had served in the U.S. Coast Guard for about 2 years when my service was cut short by an accident aboard a Coast Guard High Endurance Cutter. The ship was going through a typhoon in the middle of the Pacific Ocean while returning from an ocean station between Japan and Midway Island. The ship had taken a large swell (wave) and I was thrown down a hatch inside the ship's berthing area and was knocked unconscious. I had developed head trauma to the brain and started to have seizures. I was honorably discharged from service with a service-connected disability. As time went on, I eventually healed and started my life again.
I was a small business owner of a successful financial and insurance agency for 20 years, when my life was interrupted again by spinal-stenosis of the back and spine. I was partially paralyzed on my left side and barely able to walk. I received spine surgery from a team of neurosurgeons. The prognosis was not good. Surgery would either correct the problem or put me in a wheelchair the rest of my life.
After five and a half months being confined to a recliner chair in my house with a neck brace, I was able to go through physical therapy and soon started my life again.
I had sold my business while I was confined to my home, and after completing therapy, I was going to start on a new career path. I made the decision to give back to my community by searching for a job in the nonprofit field of work. I was hired by a nonprofit company that assisted with daily supportive services to developmentally challenged adults in group homes. The main program I was hired for was to transition residents from group homes to apartment living in the local community and to graduate from participation in workshops for the disabled to vocational training and job searching for positions with local employers.
My life was back in order with a new job. During my off hours from work I decided to go back to college and take online courses. I majored in Human Services / Management since I was really enjoying my work and wanted to expand my new career.
After graduating from college I started looking for a new career. I had heard about AmeriCorps VISTA from several sources, so I started to search available opportunities on my.AmeriCorps.gov. I was surprised at all the opportunities that were available for anyone with a bachelor’s degree.
I made the decision to sign up for a year of service and applied for several VISTA positions in my area.
Ultimately, I served with AmeriCorps VISTA working with programs for veterans and homeless veterans in Snohomish County, WA. For twelve months, I worked with the communities and their agencies in and around Everett, WA to increase awareness for all veterans of available resources and services in the community.
Gary Norton outside of the Low Income Housing Institute, where he serves.
Soon after my first AmeriCorps VISTA year of service ended, my brother had put my mother’s estate up for sale to pay bills. It sold and I had to move off the property. I did not know where I was going to go with no place to live and no job. My best friend offered to put me up on his farm and told me I could stay as long as I needed.
Early in 2016, I was involved in an automobile accident on the freeway after work in which I was rear-ended and injured. I went into therapy and was doing better in a few months. I was searching for employment when I thought I would try AmeriCorps VISTA again. I applied for the NeighborWorks VISTA Volunteer Programs Coordinator position through the Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI). After a brief interview with the program, they brought me aboard. My position is in volunteer program development serving low-income and homeless clients and residents. My assignment involved increasing the capacity of volunteer programs and resources, which was a great need for LIHI. I started in August 2016, and soon began organizing programs and services for residents and clients by recruiting volunteers in the community.
In December 2016, I was thrilled to go to NeighborWorks Training Institute in Washington, D.C. where I attended several classes, notably the Intergenerational Community Building seminar. I was so inspired by this training that I later took my learnings to the field and led a seminar of the same title. A group of students from the University of Colorado, volunteering for their spring break, participated along with residents from one of LIHI’s low-income buildings for seniors. Through this seminar, I was able to bring together multiple generations to discuss their commonalities and differences and how by learning from each other we can foster a stronger community. With the valuable skills attained from these trainings, I was able to communicate much better with some of the faith-based coalitions in the community and create more programs at LIHI’s low-income housing buildings.
The training I have received through NeighborWorks has allowed me to make a positive difference in many lives. I am inspired to continue my service to America in lifting up the less fortunate by expanding and improving upon the programs and services that LIHI offers to its clients and residents.
Without taking the road to AmeriCorps VISTA and NeighborWorks, I might still be homeless and not doing work I really enjoy. I look forward to serving the rest of my year and to continue this work in the future, if given the opportunity.

Working with Employment Agencies in Spokane and Olympia WA? Avoid Making These Mistakes
Hiring a recruitment firm to hire candidates on your behalf can be very helpful. They have access to a pool of talents and they cut down the pain of screening, interviewing, and negotiating with the candidates. Recruitment and temp agency in Olympis and Everett WA have access to talents that your HR department might not be able to get access to. So you can have peace of mind and concentrate on the other important aspects to ensure smooth operation within the organisation.
However, in order to help the employment agencies in Spokane and Olympia WA work smoothly and offer you with the best candidates, you need to help them at every stage. Companies often make mistakes while working with the recruitment agencies, which is why they fail to get the right candidate on board. If you don’t want that to happen to you, here are some mistakes that you need to avoid:
Not Communicating Regularly
You must keep communicating with the recruitment company and make sure they provide you with the most suitable candidates. Stay in touch to know what kind of candidates they are interviewing. Scrutinise the resumes to check the prospective candidate’s qualifications and experiences. Communication also helps you build long-term relationships with the recruitment company, so make sure you work alongside with the recruitment company throughout the screening and interviewing process.
Not Following Up
The recruitment companies know their job and they make sure the positions get filled as soon as possible, but it is important that you follow-up regularly. Remember, the recruitment companies work for several companies at a time, so they prioritise work for companies that have emergencies. If you do not follow-up they might think you are in no hurry to fill the positions. Ask the HR department to be in constant contact with the temps/ recruitment agency for the best results.
Not Providing the Details
You may require a programmer for your organization, but it is a must that you specify the details as well. Tell the recruitment agency whether you need a PHP programmer or a JAVA programmer, the level of experience required, the position to be filled and the responsibilities. Mentioning the salary range is also important. Also mention whether it is negotiable or not.
If you fail to provide the detailed requirements, it would be tough for the recruitment agency to provide you with the right and most suitable candidates. So have a clear understanding of the requirements for all the positions that need to be filled.
It is true that recruitment agencies work for your benefit, but it is your responsibility to make things easier for them. Remember, if the wrong candidate gets hired, you would be the one to suffer. So it is for your own benefit that you must work alongside with the recruitment company.
By avoiding the above mentioned mistakes, you can hire the right candidate and improve the overall efficiency and performance of your organisation. Communicate and follow-up and make sure the best talents join hands with your company.

A Claim Too Far: The Market’s Line in the Sand
A Claim Too Far: The Market’s Line in the Sand:
Batten Down the Hatches
I struggled with sugarcoating things for you today, but then I remembered … this is Great Stuff, we don’t do that here!
For the past couple of weeks, the market has idled in the eye of the pandemic storm. For all the volatility, the market has made little headway since early April. Wall Street spent the past two months digesting the U.S. economy’s reopening and hints of progress in treatments and vaccines for COVID-19.
This week, it seems that the situation’s enormity may have finally set in. The market is exiting the eye, heading back into stormy waters.
This morning, the U.S. Labor Department reported another three million unemployment claims were filed last week. The eight-week total for unemployment claims now stands at 36.5 million. Apparently, we finally crossed a line that makes Wall Street uncomfortable.
Adding to the situation, tensions continue to rise between the U.S. and China. This morning, the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) accused China of targeting organizations researching COVID-19.
“China’s efforts to target these sectors pose a significant threat to our nation’s response to COVID-19,” the agencies said.
Furthermore, President Trump ratcheted up his China trade deal rhetoric.
“They should have never let this happen,” Trump said in an interview on Fox Business. “So, I make a great trade deal and now I say this doesn’t feel the same to me. The ink was barely dry, and the plague came over. And it doesn’t feel the same to me.”
The administration has hinted in the past week that the U.S.-China phase 1 trade deal could be used as leverage against China for the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a result, the Dow has plummeted more than 5% in the past three days. The blue-chip barometer now threatens to break below its 50-day moving average.
This is a crucial technical indicator for the Dow that could give you an edge on when to sell those speculative bets you’ve played with during the recent rebound.
A close below this key level is a sign that it’s time to get out. Time to batten down the hatches and prepare for another major market sell off.
If this has caught you off guard, don’t put off preparing any longer. If this didn’t catch you off guard (I mean, you’re reading Great Stuff after all!), you can never be prepared enough.
Before you read another line: Please click here to make sure you’re prepared for what may lie ahead.
Now for something just as unprecedented as these employment figures … we’re diving straight into Reader Feedback!
I holler, you holler, he/she/it hollers…
It’s Reader Feedback time! This week, we’re talking tech and deflation, deflation and tech. I’ll stop my yappering, and let’s get right to it:
Teeny-Tiny Tech Trades
I’m a little confused. Are you saying Vuzix is worth buying or something to shy away from?
— H.A.J.
For those just joining in, we talked about high-tech and augmented reality (AR) glasses with Vuzix Corp. (Nasdaq: VUZI) last week.
Most of Vuzix’s customer base — pre-pandemic, at least — are scattered across the manufacturing sector, logistics chains, emergency response teams and so on throughout the industrial world. Nowadays, you or I could even go buy a pair of smart augmented-reality glasses … if you really want your neighbors social-distancing from you and your cyber eyes.
Now we’re adding in telemedicine, which gives Vuzix a massive market opportunity in front of it. But it’s not one that will skyrocket tomorrow. With so many companies just trying to get payroll sorted out, I doubt many managers will shell out the cash to don their fleets in $1,000 smart glasses anytime soon.
For these reasons (and other reasons that won’t fit here), VUZI isn’t an official Great Stuff pick that we recommend. But I will say this…
Trading these microcaps isn’t something I recommend if you’re just getting your feet wet with investing. What you need is a guide to walk you through the tech market’s nooks and crannies and tipping-point trends. You can find your guide by clicking here!
Cheaper by the Case
Deflation is not cured by interest rate increases! Not even by the Fed! Josef, please correct your comments. The fear of Deflation is that people won’t buy because it will be cheaper later.
— Everett S.
I … come again? You can’t trick me with that deflation deja vu, Everett!
Here’s what I wrote last week about deflation, word for word. Note the similarities:
“Higher interest rates mean higher minimum debt payments. And no one wants that right now. But the alternative is equally unappealing. Continued deflation leads both consumers and businesses to delay purchases as they wait for lower prices. This leads to economic stagnation.”
Good try, though, trickster. My memory may be foggy, but at least it’s not foggy.
Now on to our next email:
My case of Gallo or Sutter Home Wines just Shot UP! From $6.88 to 8.89 per 1.5 LITRE BOTTLE, that’s a $1.15 a Glass. I’m living on 458 ss. That’s 20 percent markup!
— James J.
I, for one, admire the dedication of anyone buying bulk wine by the case, but James! You’ve been had! That’s actually a 29% markup … for Shudder Home, no less! At least you aren’t drinking Boone’s Farm.
Oh, and Everett from above? Here’s your example of the consumer stagnation threat…
