Calem’s final team in game consists of: Meowstick, Absol, Clefable, Altaria, [one of the gen1 eevee evolutions], and his starter.

My True Calem team run consisted of: Meowstic, Absol, Doublade, Honchkrow, Vaporeon, Greninja.

I only swapped out two, and those two are the final additions to his team: Clefable and Altaria.

There is multiple reasons why I ended up not connecting with Clefable and Altaria, primarily because they only come in at the end and don’t get much in way of screen time to tell me what type of bond Calem forms with them.

They are last minute team additions that don’t carry a meaning, we watched the rest of his team grow with him. These two just show up-

Ultimately this makes me find them as unfitting for the personality Rival Calem displays, seeming more like Rival Serena picks than anything else. So, I made a team switch. And in order to make a team switch i need to decipher the one thing that truly matters from an outside view:

The aesthetics

The two swords employ a strategy of rapidly alternating between offense and defense to bring down their prey.

Calem prides himself in strategy, in pokemon masters he is a Tech user in his base pairing, a Support in his Neo champion, and a Tech again with his EX roll.

All these pairs have a common ground, status effects, field control, and ability. All things that make a strategist.

He isn’t going fist first, he doesn’t battle with an immature mindset of damage first think later, he thinks about counter play, he tries to predict, and he tries to prevent.

It’s only natural knowing he is the son of two veteran trainers who taught him everything going off what Shauna says.

And with his losing streak to Serena, I’d say he probably thinks too hard. He puts too much thought into doing the most that he gets countered by her doing the least. He reverses the psychology too many times and ultimately loses because he made himself vulnerable.

So a sword based in strategy only seems fitting for a young man who puts his entire future in being a strong trainer.

It’s also a meta pick- or its final evolution is at least. the honedge line is known to be strong.

If ash and pikachu taught me anything: choosing to not evolve your pokemon and winning with its pre-evolved form is proof of a proper bond between trainer and pokemon.

Dusk stones are hard to find and Calem should prioritize region travel with fly over battle, especially during the crisis with Team Flare when he never knows when he needs to up and leave to help his neighbor save the world. Using the stone on his Murkrow rather than his Doublade.

Calem already has a strong link to supernatural types in my mind, Absol being dark, Meowstic being psychic, it’s something I wanted to turn into a theme. A pattern I wanted to form and then follow.

Not to mention his friendship in pasio to ghost type specialist Acerola, the sheer amount of links to the supernatural region wide with an entire town being known as otherworldly, and the fandom association to hex maniacs which ultimately becomes so common that it wiggles into our subconscious-

Microsoft is happy to be a founding member of the FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification (FOCUS) initiative and excited to contribute Cost Management capabilities after FOCUS 1.0 is released later this year. Start ready for FOCUS by reading the specification, joining the community, and sharing your use cases and needs.

What’s focus?

FOCUS is a pioneering billing data format effort that helps enterprises identify cost and usage patterns and optimize expenditure and performance across cloud, SaaS, and on-premises services.

FOCUS will give enterprises a uniform, clear, and accessible picture of their cost data for FinOps allocation, analytics, monitoring, and optimization. FOCUS, FinOps’ new “language,” will help practitioners interact better with colleagues and enhance transferability and onboarding for new team members, getting them up and running faster. Along with the FinOps Framework, practitioners will have the tools to streamline their practice and optimize cloud value.

FOCUS is needed by organizations

Microsoft cloud services’ versatility lets you build extraordinary things while only paying for what you need, when you need it. This flexibility allows for alternative operating models that bill services and can be tweaked based on various parameters. When services are paid differently, their cost and usage data vary, making allocation, analysis, monitoring, and optimization difficult. This extends beyond Microsoft’s cloud services. Starting FOCUS

In June 2023, FOCUS 0.5 offered a common manner to describe essential concepts for all providers.

ResourceId, ResourceName, and ServiceName and ServiceCategory identify resources. ServiceCategory is noteworthy since it lets you categorize costs into top-level categories across cloud providers. The Region a resource was deployed to, the PublisherName of the service developer, and the ProviderName of the cloud where the service was consumed are also visible.

All charges include a ChargeType (use or purchase), ChargePeriodStart and ChargePeriodEnd dates, and BilledCost and AmortizedCost amounts. This is a big change from current Cost Management: with FOCUS, you can query all your data at once, which should speed up processing and reduce storage size for anyone exporting both datasets.

Since Microsoft Customer Agreement generates invoices in your billing profile, the BillingAccountId is related to it. Microsoft Cloud consumers will need to know this due to the terminology. SubAccountId, tied to your subscription, is a new cross-cloud concept for cost allocation and chargeback.

Working with data is better than reading about FOCUS. To test FOCUS, download an example Power BI report from the FinOps toolkit, an open source collection of reusable solutions to jumpstart your FinOps activities.

This report can be connected to your data via the Power BI Cost Management connection or a FinOps hub data pipeline.

A small sample dataset and other open datasets can be utilized for data ingestion and cleansing by data enthusiasts.

Finally, you may use the FinOps toolkit PowerShell module’s Invoke-FinOpsSchemaTransform or ConvertTo-FinOpsSchema command to convert your own FOCUS data. These scripts convert tiny datasets to FOCUS using a familiar command line interface.

- Veronika met Hiro in an alleyway in splatsville and just followed him around. He didn't mind too much, cause he was lonely and felt an obligation to protect the smaller inkling to compensate for his inability to do so for his parents.

- They found Lil buddy as an egg behind a Grizzco establishment. They were originally going to eat it, but decided against it when he moved inside his egg.

- All three of them are close and do everything together.

- After ROTM, they are all adopted by Captain 3 and Agent 8. Captain was not about to let them wander off by themselves like she almost did.

Most aren’t far removed from some criminal element, either by choice, close relation, or the occasional contractor through one of their shell corporations. You’ll scarcely find a programmer who hasn’t moonlighted as a “Dipper” at some point. Most dabble with decadence or crime (often the white-collar variety), if only to search for some form of existential purpose... The extra money doesn’t hurt either.

The Aerium: This network of skyscrapers is the domain of the meths exclusively. Their towers pierce the sky by several times in height the normal skyscrapers of Bay City. Each tower has the luxury of supporting a multitude of sprawling estates, all free and far above the need to see the rabble below, the unseen underclasses toiling under permanent cloud cover. Only specifically registered air vehicles and police aircars are permitted to fly anywhere near this complex. The much vaunted Suntouch House is part of this complex.

The core edition of Altered Carbon: The Role Playing Game takes place on Sol (Earth) in the year 2384. With the help of a gamemaster (GM), you and your friends can create your own stories and Sleeves in Bay City, the futuristic Californian metropolis that serves as the main setting of the first book and Season 1 of the Netflix series.

SKILL DICE: Actions are done using an appropriate die type depending on your level of skill.

Which are rolled against a Target Result (TR) assigned by the GM or Scenario:

12+ - Trivial

10-11 - Easy

9-10 - Normal

7-8 - Tricky

5-6 - Challenging

3-4 - Complicated

0-2 - Nearly Impossible

With success determined by rolling EQUAL TO OR UNDER the Target Result. The difference between the result and the TR are the degrees of success/failure generated.

Natural (rolled) 1's are considered an “Ace” - and always succeed with a flourish.

Besides the basics of rolling equal to or under the Target Result, the Hazard System provides a list of easy-to-apply modifiers that will help to quickly and contextually flush out a scene.

Bonus Dice: Players can be awarded Bonus Dice, which can be of any Die Type. Bonus Die results can take the best results (serves as an advantage).

Luck Dice: When luck plays a factor on the outcome (for better or worse), Luck Dice of any Die Type may add to Skill Check Results. Even players with D4s as Skills may fail if luck turns against them. Luck can even displace Difficulty altogether in the right situation.

Example:

Christopher is trying going toe to toe with an off-world assassin in a synthetic Sleeve but decides the fight is a little outside of his league — so he wants to escape. He could simply dart away, in which the GM will ask him for an Athletics - 5 (challenging) roll. He has a D10 in athletics so its reasonable. Or he could use a chaff bomb, which will disrupt the synthetics sensors and maybe cover his tracks. That just requires a Throw - 10 (easy), and even with a D12 that shouldn't be a problem... shouldn't...

Since all dice can roll low, there is ALWAYS a chance of success.

Since Cyberpunk 2077 is finally releasing in a few days and I’m not going to be able to play it until the new year at the earliest, I figured I’d get indulge that particular aesthetic by getting Cloudpunk.

A neat little neo-noir voxel based indie game where you play a newly employed delivery driver flying around in a steam powered hover car. 

Aesthetically this hits just right. great looking city, interesting tech and a really lived in world. I’ve played about 2 hours so far and it’s not good for what I got it for.

The PC version  got an update for a First Person mode in the HOVA so hopefully consoles will get that update soon and a patch for the choppy frame rates.

Raymond Williams’s The Country and the City has many bracing passages about how nostalgia about “community” or “the simple life” papers over class struggle or rationalizes the erasure of working people. We have heard so much of the civilizing effect of this landowning class, from its own mouth and from the mouths it has hired, that it is worth recording the coming of a more extreme class-consciousness — a systematic shaming of the laborers and the poor — from what were now so often the rebuilt country­ houses, and often by way of their attendant and employed clergy.

These rebuilt country houses were visible emblems of the triumph of exploitation and the futility of resistance. Williams notes that their current status as tourist attractions, their attractiveness and coherence as aspirational spectacles, should not distract visitors from their history as impositions of power.

People still pass from village to village, guidebook in hand, to see the next and yet the next example, to look at the stones and the furniture. But stand at any point and look at that land. Look at what those fields, those streams, those woods even today produce. Think it through as labour and see how long and systematic the exploitation and seizure must have been, to rear that many houses, on that scale. See by contrast what any ancient isolated farm, in uncounted generations of labour, has managed to become, by the efforts of any single real family, however prolonged. And then turn and look at what these other 'families', these systematic owners, have accumulated and arrogantly declared.

These houses are not only testimony to  how much “robbery and fraud there must have been, for so long, to produce that degree of disparity“ but also a demonstration of accumulation wrenched out of the scale of what can be built up by “ordinary human achievement.” They announce “an established and commanding class power,” meant to cow those who beheld them into submission.

On social media platforms today, users often are confronted with similar disparities, images that testify to and try to glamorize grotesque inequality. There is a sharp difference in scale between the time and resources and celebrity accrued to those distributing some of these images, and what any person can reasonably have achieved through their own efforts. 

But they are confronted too with another distortion of scale, in how the platform amalgamates all the metaphoric country houses and dumps them on users’ feeds, in how users are forced into a relation not with just one local exploiter but all of the world’s, chief among them the platform itself, which foregrounds its power and influence and inescapability as the enclosed grounds on which community must be structured.

Rescued by a band of smugglers, Ana found herself stranded in a city where cybernetics were more common than humanity. Ana, remembering her old scientific fascination with marine creatures, carefully observed its patterns, timing her moves with precision.

In a silent ballet beneath the moonlit water, Ana evaded the AI, reached the cargo, and secured the cybernetic enhancements. But just as she was about to leave, the machine detected her. A chase ensued, a terrifying dance of predator and prey, weaving through the rusted pillars of the old docks.

Using her intimate knowledge of marine behavior, Ana lured the AI into a trap—old, tangled fishing nets hidden among the debris. Once entangled, the machine’s efforts to free itself only tightened its binds. Ana surfaced, the stolen goods in tow, just as her crew arrived to extract her.

Back on their ship, as they sailed away from the glittering lights of Neo Buenos Aires, Ana couldn’t help but feel a pang of loss for her former life, studying the serene beauty of the ocean’s depths. Yet, she knew this dark city needed her—both as a specter and as a savior.

Search WWW 1 - rambling about tech

The writers on this show did their research on internet tech, which was a nice surprise. Random thoughts to follow on themes … FYI, I know US internet tech, things are different in Korea (and my info there is outdated.) Skip to the end for definitions, and a WHOLE LOT below, I couldn’t figure out the fold on the phone.

Search as a window into what people think Super true on both an individual (the intro of the show, where people are searching on their phones) and a collective level (how the lead was able to predict the presidential winner).

It is scarily intimate what you can learn from search queries. In fact, Bing (?) got in trouble early in its life for releasing “anonymized” queries for academic purposes, only for folks to quickly back-track who those queries belonged to. I remember one was some old lady who had a pet dog. Yikes.

Many big companies have rules to limit what employees can see and take efforts to anonymize their logs. European law also has super strict standards on individual data privacy (If you get annoyed by those pop-ups on every site asking cookie permissions, and got a rash of those+emails last spring, it’s because Europe started enforcing GDPR and all internationally-operating companies had to comply or risk ridiculous fines, at a minimum, tens of millions of euros.)

The authenticity of trending searches

It was pretty awesome to see a nuanced argument about human interference in trending searches, because there’s no correct answer.

The general public reasonably expects that popular searches are an unbiased representation of the people’s collective interest (as the senator argued at the hearing).

But if you know ANYTHING about how these things work, there is NO WAY that’s what you actually want to see. Unless, (as the lead said, awesomely and accurately), what you want to see is just the same old searches for porn every single day. Which would be true, but not interesting. And not family-friendly. Or maybe have things show up like child porn or Neo-Nazis. Which would be horrible (and illegal, at least in Germany for the latter).

So, stuff needs to get filtered out. And for the egregious content, there’s usually a filter in the algorithm itself via some list of keywords (at a basic level).

BUT. For if you want the list to update regularly and see that (for example) Taylor Swift just released a new video or that the senator in the show was accused of underage solicitation, you must base the algorithm on what we call “hot”, “rising”, or “trending” queries, rather than “popular” or “top” queries. This is based on how quickly terms are climbing up the popularity charts. Now, the trending queries can be tuned, but it can also turn up some pretty weird and unsavory stuff. Or maybe the first 5 are useless variations on the same term (ex: ‘cupcake’ vs. ‘Cupcakes’). This is where human editors come in. Pretty much every company will employ humans to at least vet the queries for horribleness, and then probably curate what might be truly interesting and representative of the cultural pulse of the masses.

Facebook actually discontinued their “Trending News” last summer (Business Insider) because they got in so much hot water politically for their human curators biasing against or “censoring conservative news” during the 2016 US elections (Gizmodo).

And I just noticed that somethings … off with Tumblr trending this week. It’s gotten really boring, which points to 1. popular (instead of trending) searches, and 2. less human involvement. Or maybe an overly strict filter.

And so … in the show, who’s right? The senator who argues for machine-only representation of the people? The lead who cleverly argues against just seeing porn? The daughter-in-law director who is actually going in and removing things from the trending list but arguing within established rules?

A nitpick OK, the show was reeeeeally good on all of these above things, but there was one hollow note, where Lead argued with her staff about whether a .5% loss to the competitor mattered. And DAMN .5% is huge when you’re talking at the scale of millions of people (population of Korea). But, if it was not statistically significant, as the staffer argued, Lead should have just dropped it. Within the margin of error = 0 for all intents and purposes. Come on.
