Princess Maria Amélia of Brazil
Artist: Friedrich Dürck (German, 1809–1884)
Date: 19th Century
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Collection: Imperial Museum of Brazil, Petrópolis Imperial Palace, Brazil
Princess Maria Amélia of Brazil
Dona Maria Amélia (1 December 1831 – 4 February 1853) was a princess of the Empire of Brazil and a member of the Brazilian branch of the House of Braganza. Her parents were Emperor Dom Pedro I, the first ruler of Brazil, and Amélie of Leuchtenberg. The only child of her father's second marriage, Maria Amélia was born in France after Pedro I abdicated the Brazilian throne in favor of his son Dom Pedro II. Before Maria Amélia was a month old, Pedro I went to Portugal to restore the crown of the eldest daughter of his first marriage, Dona Maria II. He fought a successful war against his brother Miguel I, who had usurped Maria II's throne.

Right I don't often make fandom posts but I do think that a Green victory in The House of the Dragon could have conceivably resulted in an aesthetic rather close to that of Imperial Brazil.

Ending today with the other great Emancipation War of the 1840s to 1880:
Ending today with the other great emancipation war of the time, the one that unraveled slavery in Brazil. The Paraguayan War/War of the Triple Alliance was one of the largest, bloodiest wars in South America. It was also the war that was so bloody the Empire of Brazil was forced to recruit Black troops to bail it out of a war larger and costlier than it ever dared to anticipate, and the price of its ultimate victory in the fighting that followed, fighting that laid waste to Paraguay on a Biblical scale, and where the price of winning this war brought down both slavery and the Empire of Brazil with it.

Your video talk reminded me of an archeologist guy that saw so much mis/disinformation and conspiracy theories being peddled on tiktok, that he started to make videos debunking all that bullshit, and ended up kinda making a career out of it. Milo Rossi, Miniminuteman on YouTube, he's hilarious.
lmao know exactly who he is, he's so goddamn funny, he doesn't even debunk shit, he just clowns on conspiracy theorists now which honestly is the way to do it
my whole reaction yesterday came from a video I came across some little boy who was talking about a "great book he read" and its a book Ive seen, never felt inclined to even touch it, smelt of shit to me in the distance, it's "as razoes do atraso portugues" or something like that by some economist (economists always think they know history) and this little dude summarised the book and its apparently... bc of the MArquis of Pombal. And he did this in the Gen Z tone which made it even more obnoxious "yeah, the guy we were taught at school was so awesome! that guy!" what school? what school taught you that? "he ruined our economy because he made sure the gold found in brasil [which had been pouring in since before he was minister of jack shit] was misapropriated and then he kicked out the jesuits who were responsible for education" absolutely no nuance on matter, one of the most interesting, most controversial figures in our history that I always describe to my clients as "one step forward, two steps back" a guy who is described by Brazilian historian Laurentino Gomes, who dead describes XVIII portugal as the most backwards and delayed european nation (because it WAS), as the only moment of progress in our history because how hard can it be to grasp that a man who was raised on the Republic of Letters, who was taught among some of the brightest Liberal minds of Austria and England was responsible for some of the most incredible progress in Portugal AND YET was also responsible for some of the greatest set backs due to his paranoia and dictatorial ruling as Prime Minister? Where is nuance?
The dude in the video also said that, according to the book, the Marquis of Pombal was responsible for implementing Absolutism... is John V a joke to us? Do you think absolutism sprouted from Pombal's ass one day when he went to take a shit in Rua do Século after the earthquake? Do you think we call Manuel I proto-absolutist because it's just a fun little quirky thing historians dug out of their sphincter?
Why do yall think the medallion with his face in Commerce Square is there with the completely wrong that, something like 1838?
Did people lose their ability to think?
Stop reading history books written by economists. I am a fair believer than anyone can become a historian so long as they learn the methodology and digs into the sources (I'm not a historian myself, I'm an art historian) but economists are doomed to fail man, fuck them

I just thought of this and thought it was cute. ⭐️
At some point in the years before Brazil gained independence, Rome and Knights Templar happened to be visiting at the same time and saw Brazil sleeping in Portugal’s bed while Portugal was cuddling him. Brazil woke up at some point since he heard talking in the room and saw the two. He was about to turn to wake Portugal up, but Rome put a finger to his lips and told Brazil to keep quiet and to return to sleep. Brazil did return to sleep out of confusion, but also became more tense in his sleep since he was afraid the two would hurt his papai. He still remembered that night clear as day.
Now in present day, Brazil recalled the incident and decided to tell Portugal about it. But when he reached Portugal’s house, Portugal was asleep and, in the same room, Knights Templar and Rome were near the bed just watching as Portugal slept, while Knights Templar was slightly awing at Portugal with Rome just staring, still a little afraid of Lusitania. Brazil looked at them for some time and the two noticed after a while.
During the stare down, Portugal woke up, still half asleep and just tiredly looked at the three.
(I just thought of this and thought about Portugal’s reaction to seeing all three in his bedroom. And Brazil will just bring up the night at some point in the conversation.)

Aww. That's really cute.
Afonso thought he was still dreaming as he watched the three men in front of his bed.
"The father, the son and the Holy Spirit," he muttered, his eyes growing wider as he realized he wasn't dreaming. "What the...?"
Étienne moved closer. "Oh. We woke up. Sorry about that."
"Padrinho... you're here?" Afonso reached out and grabbed his arms. "How? Why? Is this... some sign that I'm dying? Wait, is Luciano dead?!"
"Jesus, old man. I'm not dead!" Luciano said. "I came to check up on you and I saw them here again."
"What do you mean again?" Afonso asked, looking at Rome.
"I saw them watching you while you slept a long time ago. Almost forgot it."
"How else am I going to see you without you screaming at me?" Rome said. "You were always cutest when you were asleep."
Afonso stared at his dad, almost at a loss for words.
"I didn't know you wanted to see me at all, dad."
"Rome cares about his progeny! Besides, I wanted to meet my grandson."
"He wanted me to join in case you got mad at him," Étienne added with a smile.
"Shut up."
