Havent seen it around here, so here are some politician's reactions to the official announcement of Maduro winning the Venezuelan elections.
[Logo] Presidency of the Republic, Costa Rica Government.
The Government of Costa Rica categorically repudiates the proclamation of Nicolás Maduro as president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, which we consider fraudulent. We will work with the democratic governments of the continent and international organizations to ensure that the sacred will of the Venezuelan people is respected.
— Rodrigo Chaves Robles, President of the Republic of Costa Rica
Not this way! It was an open secret. They were going to “win” regardless of the actual results. The process up to election day and counting was clearly flawed. You cannot recognize a triumph if you do not trust the form and mechanisms used to achieve it.
— Luis Lacalle Pou, President of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay
The Maduro regime must understand that the results it publishes are difficult to believe. The international community, and especially the Venezuelan people, including the millions of Venezuelans in exile, demand total transparency of the records and the process, and for international observers not committed to the government to attest to the veracity of the results.
From Chile we will not recognize any result that is not verifiable.
— Gabriel Boric Font, President of the Republic of Chile
As the Government of Chile, we make a firm call for the will of the Venezuelan people to be respected and for the results of the presidential election to be guaranteed. These are decisive hours in Venezuela and democracy must prevail above all.
— Alberto van Klaveren, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile
I condemn in all its extremes the sum of irregularities with the intention of fraud on the part of the government of Venezuela.
Peru will not accept the violation of the popular will of the Venezuelan people.
Given the very serious official announcements of the Venezuelan electoral authorities, the immediate call for consultations of the Peruvian ambassador accredited to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has been arranged.
Several countries in the region are coordinating joint actions so that the will of the Venezuelan people expressed yesterday is undoubtedly respected. There is no going back, take as long as it takes. Our ambassador in Venezuela, called in for consultations, leaves Caracas today.
— Javier González-Olaechea, Chancellor of Peru
Panama joins to the generalized rejection regarding the electoral result in Vzla. We aspired for the popular will to be respected and such a situation was not expected. We will act individually and collectively in favor of Venezuelan democracy. We will announce measures that we will adopt in accordance with inter-American rules in the coming hours.
— José Raúl Mulino, President of the Republic of Panama
DICTATOR MADURO, OUT!!!
Venezuelans chose to end the communist dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro. The data announce a crushing victory for the opposition and the world is waiting for him to recognize defeat after years of socialism, misery, decadence and death.
Argentina is not going to recognize another fraud, and hopes that the Armed Forces this time will defend democracy and the popular will.
Freedom Advances in Latin America.
— Javier Milei, President of the Argentine Republic
Throughout the region, there are politicians who try to cling to power and seek to rob our citizens of peace. That is what we are facing; that is the danger of dictatorship, and today we are witnessing how one more of them tries to take hope away from millions of Venezuelans.
Ecuador had the opportunity to prevent the interests of a few from prevailing over the will of millions. Venezuela deserves that opportunity; therefore, I have requested our foreign minister to take the necessary steps to convene the Permanent Council of the OAS to address the delicate situation in Venezuela.
— Daniel Noboa Azin, President of the Republic of Ecuador
Venezuela deserves transparent, accurate results that adhere to the will of its people.
We receive the results announced by the CNE with many doubts. For this reason, the reports of the electoral observation missions are essential, which today, more than ever, must defend the vote of Venezuelans.
— Bernardo Arévalo, President of the Republic of Guatemala

How come Uruguay’s official name is República Oriental?
The full explanation is a bit complicated, considering how long the independence wars were, and how many hands had power in succession over what now is Uruguay (Spain, Britain, Portugal, Brazil, the United Provinces of River Plate...) but the long-ish summary would be:
During the Spanish colonization, as you know, the Americas were divided in viceroyalties:
The viceroyalty of River Plate had its capital in Buenos Aires, which is on the west coast of River Plate, where the Paraná-Paraguay river net meets the Uruguay River way:
The distance between BSAS and the closest point-port on the other side of the river (Colonia del Sacramento, which for that reason was a contention point between Portugal and Spain) is 51km. You can only see the lights of BSAS from Colonia.
Upstream River Plate into River Uruguay, the distance is much narrower, but the Uruguay is still an important river (notice how much more significant it is than Cuareim river in the northern border with Brazil, even if you don't take into account the Salto dam):
Because of that, it became a natural border that separated this and the other provinces, and so it was called Provincia Oriental, meaning that it was on the eastern side of River Uruguay. Had BSAS been upstream the Paraná, the separation wouldn't have been seen as so significant (it's also important to note that back in the day, because of sea currents and rocky coasts, the eastern shore was difficult to reach successfully by sea).
When Uruguay became a country, for the sake of continuity and ease, it was named Estado Oriental del Uruguay and then República Oriental del Uruguay. Basically the name is "the country to the East side of River Uruguay".
For a long time citizens of Uruguay were indistinctly called either Uruguayos or Orientales, and one choice or another had different political meanings: Uruguayan implies an adherence to the politically unitarian view (as it only applies to people born after the republic) while Oriental implies ties to a longer history and to a more federal mindset (although it was also emphasized by military regimes and similar as for obvious reasons the national heroes were all Orientals and not really Uruguayans). Nowadays officially the use of Uruguayan is encouraged for reasons of... making the demonym easily understood to foreigners, but the use of Oriental is not forbidden (although it is becoming mostly poetic/lyric in use).

The Foolish Fatherland
Domestic Affairs
The Banda Oriental, now named Uruguay, has democratized and instituted universal suffrage. José Gervasio Artigas, already a national hero, has been elected the first president of Uruguay.
Meanwhile, in Chile, General Bernardo O'Higgins has followed in the footsteps of Iturbide by ordering the killing of all royalists in the country. Over the course of a bloody week, thousands of pro-Spanish Chileans are butchered at the hands of the pro-independence forces.
In Venezuela, Simón Bolívar has announced the beginning of the "Great Jump Forward," a major military expansion, involving mass recruitment of soldiers. Calling upon people from all walks of life; slaves, peasants, students, etc. into new "Revolutionary Guard" militias. After their organization, on the road to the New Granada frontline, they engage in "struggle campaigns", killing planters, destroying plantations and freeing slaves. Furthermore, a new military academy has opened in Venezuela for the patriot forces to recruit officers from. A Specter is Haunting the Americas
After abolishing slavery, remaking plantations into state-ran farms, and killing former plantation owners, New Spain has been renamed "The People's Republic of the Americas," and a new society centered around communal living and the worker ownership of the means of production has been established. Strangely, amidst all of this change, Iturbide himself has not been seen publicly recently, and all his correspondence is handled through his secretary.
Purchasing weapons from the Chinese, Iturbide expands his army, with many freed slaves enlisting. Likewise, using money from gold, a great fleet is being constructed, with the sailors being trained by the Ottoman Navy.
Cocaine is now all the rage amongst the bourgeois of both the Americas and Europe, and as The People's Republic of the Americas has a monopoly on the trade, all money is going straight to Mexico City.
Little Burr in Big Trouble
Incensed by the impressment of American sailors into the Royal Navy, the United States of America has signed an alliance with Napoleon Bonaparte and declared war on Great Britain.
This news takes a while to travel to the American frontier, where Aaron Burr, with visions of gold dancing in his head, has taken an army of mutinous American soldiers across the border into The People's Republic of the Americas. The government in Washington has no choice but to retroactively approve the illegal and unprovoked invasion, but there is nothing they can really do about it, because tens of thousands of redcoats are streaming up the Chesapeake Bay.
The Desolation of Ferdinand The loyalists and patriots come head to head in New Granada. Following the royalist withdrawal from much of the territory, the rebels have struggled to keep a hold of the colony, as effective loyalist propaganda, alongside patriot alienation has led to many of the wealthy and the traditionalists siding with the royalists, and the patriots find themselves fighting the people they are trying to liberate. The patriots, a massive force under Antonio Nariño awaiting reinforcements from Bolivar, are ambushed at Villa de Leyva by Venegas, informed by royalist spies. Espionage warfare has raged in the camps of both armies and the public at large. Venegas could not follow up on his victory, as he was poisoned by rebel spies, and has died. The Spanish crown as assumed military control of the Granadan frontline. The Spanish counterattack has been met in the field by Nariño and Bolivar, who now form a united force. Tens of thousands have died in a brutal series of engagements. The outcome remains undecided so far, but the situation can tip at any moment.
Battle of Santa Fe
De Liniers makes up his mind, and before Artigas can extract his army from Santa Fe and escape to Uruguay, it is caught by the royalist forces and takes a heavy beating. A last-ditch counterattack allows Artigas and some of his forces to escape, but de Liniers has won a crushing victory, and now can turn his attention to San Martin in Buenos Aires.

Leaders Declare Americas Partnership for Economic Prosperity
Official Declaration From the White House
Word-for-word transcription. We, the leaders of Barbados, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Peru, the United States, and Uruguay hold a common vision for a more open, fair, inclusive, sustainable, and prosperous hemisphere. We envision a brighter future for all the people of the Americas in which vibrant economies build more equitable societies and democratic governments, through effective institutions, deliver for all. To this end, we recognize the need to accelerate inclusive and sustainable trade and investment in the region, address the climate crisis, and expand social and economic opportunities that leave no one behind. We reaffirm our collective commitment to shared values, including democracy, rule of law, diversity and inclusion, decent work and well-paying jobs, environmental and social protection, labor rights, universal human rights, and fundamental freedoms in the Americas. Having launched the Americas Partnership for Economic Prosperity (“Americas Partnership”) with the intention to significantly strengthen our economic partnership, we have come together to establish the Americas Partnership as a leader-led forum for deepening economic collaboration and integration in our hemisphere. We intend for the Americas Partnership to serve as a lasting regional platform to pursue an ambitious, flexible, and goal-oriented economic and development agenda. At this inaugural Leaders’ Summit of the Americas Partnership, we have identified the following five initial cross-cutting priorities that will focus and drive our collective work: - Strengthening regional competitiveness and integration - Fostering shared prosperity and good governance - Building sustainable infrastructure - Protecting the climate and environment - Promoting healthy communities To advance these priorities, we will identify a set of specific actions that we intend to collectively implement to achieve concrete results through a newly created and enduring structure for the Americas Partnership. To that end, we resolve to establish three tracks and ask Ministers to meet annually to carry out these efforts. The Foreign Affairs Track will advance activities and initiatives that will help to deliver inclusive and sustainable growth and unleash the full potential of our peoples. We acknowledge the intricate links in each of our countries between good governance and increased growth as well as the importance of ensuring that the gains are broadly shared. To launch this first phase of work, we ask our Foreign and other relevant Ministers to prioritize collaborative initiatives aimed at fostering inclusive growth, such as through the establishment of a regional accelerator for entrepreneurs and programs to foster workforce development, particularly in the digital economy. We further call on Ministers to identify specific tools and initiatives to address barriers that prevent women and other historically underrepresented groups from participating fully in the workforce. Additionally, we ask Ministers to advance projects and initiatives that will help to tangibly improve access to healthcare, potable water, clean energy, food, and nutritional security, and support smart agriculture and protect against climate change through sound adaptation and mitigation practices, which are essential for prosperous societies and economies and the future of humankind. To ensure gains are broadly shared, we also call on Ministers to explore efforts to deepen existing commitments to anti-corruption and transparency efforts. The Trade Track will bolster the foundations of our regional competitiveness by building upon our existing trade links and economic cooperation. We call on the Ministers responsible for trade to develop inclusive and sustainable approaches to trade and investment that will support regional sustainable development and resilient supply chains for goods and services, enhance a predictable and transparent regulatory environment that can boost trade flows, and remove barriers to greater economic integration among our countries. We expect these efforts to reflect our values and create formal jobs that lead to decent work and promote internationally recognized labor rights, environmental sustainability, and economic inclusion. We ask Ministers to immediately focus on enhancing regional integration by advancing implementation of the WTO Agreement on Trade Facilitation and digitization of customs mechanisms throughout the region. We further ask Ministers to conduct a gap analysis to identify regulatory actions needed to enhance regional integration and develop mechanisms, actions, and information-sharing tools to ensure that the benefits of trade are more widely shared with micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises and historically underrepresented communities. The Finance Track will pursue high-standard finance and investment initiatives that will be central to the success of the Americas Partnership. We ask our Finance and other relevant Ministers to aim to accelerate efforts to increase the quality and quantity of financing for the Americas, including through innovative and concessional financial instruments. Ministers should work to maintain momentum on the ongoing evolution of multilateral development banks to better address national and cross-border development challenges, especially at the World Bank Group and the Inter-American Development Bank Group. We commend the consensus reached by the Governors for the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Inter-American Investment Corporation (IDB Invest) to make swift progress towards reform of the IDB Group and towards assessing the potential recapitalization of IDB Invest. We look forward to the IDB Group playing a renewed role in hemispheric engagement that promotes high-standard, responsible, and sustainable investment that safeguards workers, communities, and the environment, expands access to decent jobs, and catalyzes regional growth. Further, we ask our Ministers to prioritize efforts to leverage new and existing development finance tools, such as the investment platform established by the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation and IDB Invest, to support sustainable digital and physical infrastructure and innovative nature-based solutions that provide positive financial incentives to promote environmental conservation and address climate challenges. Taken together, the work we carry out in these three tracks will build on our foundation of economic ties and strengthen our hemispheric resilience. Recognizing the lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic, the risks and adverse impacts of climate change, and other potential sources of disruption to global supply chains, we intend to establish the Americas as the home of the world’s most competitive, inclusive, sustainable, and resilient regional value and supply chains. Our efforts will focus on three initial priority sectors: clean energy, medical supplies, and semiconductors. This will require coordination and cooperation among governments, and with public and private stakeholders, to invest in the health and security of our peoples now and for the future. The Americas Partnership, through regular and formal engagements, will seek the input and expertise of a variety of stakeholders and partners, particularly underrepresented groups, to inform the development of new cooperative initiatives. To initiate this work, we call on Ministers to develop regional competitiveness plans to build resilient supply chains in the Americas, taking advantage of our complementarities. In these sector-specific workstreams, we will pay particular attention to the formalization, financing, and incentives for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises. Across all lines of effort in the Americas Partnership, we will promote the social, cultural, economic, and political inclusion of all. We will endeavor to facilitate greater well-being and foster consultation with and participation of underrepresented communities, such as Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendants, women, youth, LGBTQI+ individuals, older persons, persons with disabilities, and members of rural populations, and ensure micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises have greater opportunities to access markets. Similarly, across all of our work, we intend to promote shared values of transparency, fairness, inclusivity, accountability, and environmental sustainability, while also upholding high standards for labor and promoting innovations in responsible business conduct, throughout our economies, in accordance with our multilateral commitments. To accomplish these goals, we call on Ministers to regularly engage in multistakeholder dialogues with these communities to ensure the work and outcomes of the Americas Partnership reflect a broad and diverse set of voices. In the spirit of openness and inclusivity, we ask Ministers to establish a process for welcoming additional Western Hemisphere countries to join the Americas Partnership. We believe that, together, we have the capacity to transform our shared hemisphere, building on the diversity, talent, and dynamism of our peoples. We intend to meet every two years to assess our progress and identify additional opportunities to galvanize action toward our vision for a closer, safer, more prosperous Americas. we should refer to more countries the same way we refer to the US and the UK as “the United States” and “the United Kingdom” instead of, respectively, “America” or “Great Britain and Northern Ireland” (i mean people do sometimes call the US just America but like, if you say “the United States” people know you mean “the United States of America” and not, say, the United Mexican States or the United States of Brazil (1937-1967) or the United States of Indonesia (1949-1950))
start calling Germany "the Federal Republic". brazil (1967-present) "the Federative Republic". Bolivia "the Plurinational State". PNG "the Independent State". Uruguay "the Oriental Republic".
#just to be clear this is a shitpost i'm not seriously advocating for any of these names lmao#i just think ti would be mildly funny

take: rather than translating la república oriental del uruguay as "the oriental republic of uruguay", it should be translated as "the republic east of the uruguay" (meaning the uruguay river), cause like. that's what the spanish means, it's a geographical designation, carried over from the united provinces of the river plate-era banda oriental del uruguay "eastern bank of the uruguay" and provincia oriental "eastern province". "oriental republic" makes next to no sense in english, especially given the modern connotations of the word "oriental"
#secondary take: saying “río de la plata” in english is kind of obnoxious.#this is an opinion i got as a result of the obscene hypersaturation of althist kiddies naming their alternate argentinas “la plata”
