"Oh, God. It's somehow gotten worse." You slumped into your seat, cringing at idea of the sights Glenn had seen just from keeping a copy of each photo developed.

"That's horrifying." Jonah muttered beside you, avoiding your eyes as you turned your head sharply to face him, sudden realisation crossing your features as you remembered some of the things Jonah had mentioned getting developed in the store.

"Stop." You gasped, a hand hitting his shoulder as you tried to contain your laughter. "I told you we should've got them developed at Michaels."

"You don't have any of my photos, because I don't pose for them." Dina asserted, a charming smile gracing her lips as she bragged about her digital footprint - or lack thereof. "You know, if I ever got kidnapped, the police would have quite a time finding a current photo to put on the news."

"Anyway, over the years, we've watched Amy's daughter Emma grow. Who could forget the time that she lost a tooth right here in the store and Elias ate it 'cause he thought it was a Chiclet?"

"Glenn, you're drifting." Jonah murmured, forcing Glenn to conclude his impromptu life story and get back into the morning announcements.

"Oh. Okay, well, we'll finish that later. Anyway, Emma, we are so happy that you're here, and we hope you have a great first day!" Glenn dismissed the break room with a wave of his hand, the slideshow clicking off as everyone got up to start their respective shifts.

Half the break room had already cleared out when glenn finished checking over his list of announcements, settling on one scrawled in pen last minute at the bottom of the page. "Oh, also, starting today is Kelly Watson."

"Hi, everyone. I'm really excited to be here." Unfortunately, Kelly's introduction fell on deaf ears, the break room now empty aside from a few stragglers who, even then, weren't listening.

You'd somehow convinced Amy to let Emma tag along with you - and consequently Jonah - for at least the first half of her shift, adamant that it wasn't fair for her to be thrown that far in the deep end. Amy disagreed.

However, this had so far resulted in tense small talk between Emma and Jonah as you actually got on with your work, refusing to play the older sibling role you usually would. Emma was quite dismissive of all attempts to converse he made, eyes wandering anywhere but Jonah's face as she idly put things onto the shelf; leading her to notice the coverall-clad warehouse manager before you had.

"Marcus!" Emma had left Jonah's side before you could even register who she'd called out to, her arms wrapped tightly around his waste before you could stop her. And if it hadn't been for the shout of his name from Emma's mouth, the endearing term he returned to her would've forcefully captured your attention.

"There's my girl!"

Marcus tentatively let his arm wrap around her shoulders, half-assedly hugging her back. His eyes were slow to meet yours, slowly working their way up your figure and then to your face, a small smile gracing his lips as he realised you weren't looking away.

My girl. You and Marcus had agreed to be friends, so therefore there was no reason to make things awkward. Sooner or later the butterflies would fade away and then you'd be able to look at him without wishing he was yours - today was not that day though.

"I missed you!" Emma pulled away from the brunette with a toothy smile, chin pressed to his chest as she looked up at him. "Why don't you come over with y/n anymore?"

Marcus was rendered speechless; not only at the fact he had no clue how to explain to the innocent Emma what had happened, but at the fact you'd clearly not shared the news of your seeming break up.

Maybe, there was still hope for the two of you yet.

"We've just been busy, Em." You answered for him, stepping closer to the girl and placing a hand on her shoulder, gently pulling her away from Marcus. "Even I've not been able to make the dinners weekly, you know that."

Ignoring the burning feeling in your fingertips as your hand grazed Marcus's arm, you turned Emma to fully face you. "We'll figure something okay though, okay?" At a quick nod from Emma you pushed her back in the direction of the shelf, urging her to get to work before Amy caught her slacking and took her away from you.

"So..."

"Sorry about that... Marcus." Even you saying his name was enough to get his heart practically jumping out of his chest; and he dreaded to think of the day you understood just how much of an effect you had on him.

"It's no problem y/n, really."

"So, about what happened-"

"I have to go." Marcus left without another word, not able to hear you over the beating on his own heart loud in his ears, the same heart that felt like it would jump out of his chest if he looked at you too long: thought about all the things you made him feel too long.

With a tight lipped frown, you walked back towards Emma and Jonah, ignoring the pang of hurt in your chest as you turned your back to him, avoiding Jonah's intense gaze that silently warned you he'd be brining this up later.

"So ninth grade. Fidget spinners, huh?"

Another lousy attempt at small talk from Jonah, although this time, thankfully, it was intercepted by the appearance of a less-then-pleased Amy. "Hey. Don't distract Jonah."

Emma groaned and rolled her eyes before turning to face her mother, a scowl already crossing her face. "I wasn't."

Jonah lent against the spinning display of stuffed animals, a proud smile on his face as he corrected Amy's accusation. He slung his other arm around you, giving you the hug you well needed after your brief confrontation with Marcus. "We were just gabbing."

"Go collect the clothes from the dressing rooms, then fold them, hang them, put them on the racks, and I'll come show you how to scrub down the bathrooms." Amy really wasn't cracking on her 'just like everyone else' policy, huh.

"Seriously?"

"Yes, seriously. Lose the attitude. Go." Emma walked away with a loud sigh, oblivious to how Amy was mocking her attitude the moment she turned her back.

Jonah frowned, his face scrunched in confusion as to why Amy was treating Emma so harshly - as though you hadn't been doing your most to act like you would with every other employee. "Wow. Pretty tough on her. I feel like I barely did anything my first day."

"Yeah, we all felt that way."

"I literally watched Garrett hand you the 'look like you're doing something' box. I walked with you while you pretended to do stuff." You laughed at the brunette, thinking back to his first day that felt like year ago and yesterday at the same time. So much had happened since then.

"She just has such an attitude since the divorce." Amy confirmed, explaining why she was treating Emma the way she was. "That's why I'm making her work here. I'm hoping she gets some discipline."

Jonah removed his arm from around you as he gestured at Amy, brow creased in thought. "And you're not worried that if you're too hard on her, Adam gets to be the good guy?"

"What? No."

Jonah tucked both his hands in his pockets, rocking on the balls of his feet as uncertainty filled his being. "It's just that when my parents separated, they both wanted to be the favourite. I came home one day and my Dad had gotten me a ten-disc box set of Churchill speeches." A soft smile curled on his face as he thought back on what he deemed a fond memory.

"My mom dated this guy called Neil once - I think I met him a total of three times - bought me this fat stack of Pokémon cards to open and even got me flowers on Valentine's Day. I liked him more then I ever liked my mom." You concurred, backing Jonah's point despite Amy's confused look.

"Point is." Jonah continued, arm returning around you as he attempted to explain to Amy the divide that comes with having divorced parents. "I'm still closer with him than I am with my Mom. Although that might be because he doesn't send me long, pointless texts about book club."

"Yeah, see, Latino parents are different. We don't really need our kids to like us." Amy let out a whistle sigh, facing dropping to convey all seriousness as she stared at Jonah. "We just break their spirit so the world doesn't."

"Huh. And why why do you pierce your babies' ears so earl..."

Amy cut jonah off before he could even begin - and rightly so - turning and following after Emma. "I am not on a panel. This is not "ask a Latina.""

"Got it. I'll just find out on Reddit." Jonah mumbled to himself, turning back to the shelf that had been half-restocked, Emma's section barley done and yours almost complete. With a long, drawn out and unusually uncomfortable pause, jonah turned to you, lips pursed as he let out a low whistle, breaking the silence. "Are we going to talk about what happened between you and Marcus earlier?"

"Not if I can help it." You replied, turning around to work on a different portion of the shelf now that you were one man down and trying to compensate for the lack of Emma's presence - not that she was doing much to begin with.

"Why?" Jonah whined, throwing his head back with a sigh as you continued to ignore him. "It's clear he still likes you."

"Believe me, he made it very clear to me he wanted to just be friends." Jonah scoffed at your words, having seen the display just minutes ago and noticing the way Marcus had looked at you. Not that he would ever say it out loud, but he knows that look - he knows how it looks to look at you with that look - and how it feels. If Marcus didn't still have feelings for you, then Jonah's name wasn't Jonah.

"Yeah, well, trust me on this one, peach. He likes you!"

"As much as I'd like to believe you J, I won't until Marcus tells me himself - and what he has told me, is we should be friends." Before Jonah could fight against your claim even more, you offered him the crease of your elbow, adjusting your posture and asking, with your best old Englishman impression, "Coffee?"

Jonah let it slide, linking his arm in yours. "Thought you'd never ask."

The display could be finished some other time, you thought.

"Hey, can I talk to you for a second? It's kinda personal."

Garrett had already hunted you down within the store, and had then switched your search to Jonah, his unusually quiet demeanour beginning to scare you. It wasn't like Garrett to act so... nervous or worried, and it was really beginning to stress you out.

"Yeah, sure, sure."

"Okay, well, first of all, you need to calm down." Jonah seemed far too excited for the two-on-one seemingly need-to-know basis chat, especially when considering the tense look that riddled Garretts face and creased his forehead.

"I'm calm. Calm. Just, you know, my roomie's coming to me for a little heart-to-heart." A warm, pleased smile curled onto Jonah's lips and, what you thought was a blush, filled the apples of his checks as he dismissed his excitement for the intimate conversation. "It's, uh, it's a good day. It's a really, it's a really good day."

"How come you never had this reaction when I wanted to open up to you?" You were more teasing in your words but a deeper blush filled Jonah's cheeks at the question.

"You always open up to me, peach. It's something I treasure about our friendship. But this? This is new." With a pinch to your arm, Jonah turned back to Garrett with an intense gaze, excited to hear whatever he had to say - even if it was the smallest of secrets.

"Basically, Dina and I decided together to break up. And now she's going around, she's telling everybody that she dumped me..." Your face contorted at the statement, confused as to why this was seemingly such a big deal to Garrett. Despite your feelings he cared more deeply about Dina then he said, he had been pretty adamant they were together just for the sex.

"Oh."

Garrett let out a loud sigh, hand running across his face as he came to terms with everything that had happened so far today. "Which is not true. It was mutual."

"Okay."

"Can you stop active listening?" Garrett snapped at Jonah, the brunette clamping his mouth shut and bringing a hand to his chin as he replaced his more vocal attempt at listening with a physical one.

"Just continue, Gare."

"And I feel like I want to let everyone know, but Dina's in a rough place, and I don't want it to look like I'm kicking her when she's down."

Before you could interject with - what you believed - was some sound advice, Jonah exemplified him active listening with some active recall. "Got it, okay, so unh. Let's unpack this. Uh, it sounds to me like you're looking for a way to let everybody know what happened with you and Dina without it reflecting poorly on you."

"That's exactly what I just said."

Jonah stood deep in thought, Garretts eyes rolling at the concerned look that graced the brunettes features. "Okay. That's a toughie. That is a tough, tough, toughie."

"What I think Jonah means, Gare, is that there's no way you won't look like the bad guy in this situation." You interjected, sparing Garrett and yourself the trauma of listening to Jonah's commentary of a thought process. "Besides, why do you care so much? How can you guys break up if you were never actually together?"

Garrett seemed to have had enough buttons pushed with your final question, pointing out the main issue with this whole 'break up' in the first place - that Garrett cared for Dina and the relationship they agreed upon in a more then friends with benefits way. "Okay, this isn't gonna work."

"Wait, no, no, no, no! I can do better. Let me, give me a do-over. Come back." Jonah scrambled to find a reason that would get Garrett to let him try again, determined to not lose this new level of closeness now that Garrett had opened up to him. "I'll pretend like this didn't happen."

"It's okay, J." You promised, squeezing his shoulder gently and turning him to face you, pulling him along with you as you went towards the chip aisle. "We'll get him next time, besides, I've got a plan."

"All right. I, uh I messed up before. I'm sorry. I, I was listening, but I wasn't really hearing. So here's what we're gonna do." Jonah and you had concocted a plan to get Garrett to feel better that consisted largely of food and relaxation: Garrett's third favourite thing after you and video games. "Tonight, gonna pop open a couple brewskis, we're gonna get ourselves a nice pie pizza pie, not pecan or whatever and we are gonna watch ourselves a little movie called "Bad Boys 2" and get you through this breakup thing roomie-style."

"Roomie and y/n style." You corrected, pointing between yourself, Jonah and Garrett and the 6 pack on the customer service counter with way too much enthusiasm for Garrett right now.

"All right. That's enough." Garrett picked up the microphone, buzzing the intercom to life for a store wide announcement that you had a suspicious feelings as going to detail his version of events. "Attention, Cloud 9 employees! I am fine. Dina did not break up with me, and actually, if you want to get real about it, it was my idea. I was trying to be a nice guy."

"Garrett." You warned, even using your friends full name for a change. He was taking things too far by making an announcement on the subject, and you were sure that whatever he was to say next would only make things worse.

"I got this." He reassured, pressing the speak button on the microphone once more. "So if you want to feel bad for somebody, feel bad for Dina, 'cause she's the one seeing the shrink."

You and Jonah both gasped at the knowledge Garrett just revealed - unintentional or not, it was a low blow, and he should've just stopped while he was ahead; maybe even just have let Dina have the last word.

Garrett's face paled, aghast as he tried to talk himself out of the grave he'd just dug himself. "That was something I shouldn't have said. Sorry about that. Please pretend you didn't hear that. Have a good day."

Jonah let out a low whistle, grabbing the six pack off the counter top with the intention of returning it to where he'd got it from. "I'm gonna just put these back."

Pulling away from your beloved spot at the customer service desk, you joined Jonah, leaving Garrett to figure out he needed to apologise to Dina himself, though he seemed readily aware of that. "Yeah and it's like, totally time for me to clock out. Maybe you should do the same, Gare. Maybe take some flowers with you too - I don't know."

Garrett didn't blame the two of you for leaving after the shit show of an announcement, hanging his head in shame and thought as he figured out how he could fix things with Dina now he'd fucked up big time. "Goodnight, guys." Though Garrett didn't think either of you heard him, he said to anyway, leaving the desk in search of Dina who he owed the biggest apology to.

The whole walk to the break room was filled with thoughts as to why on earth Garrett would say what he said, the thought so overwhelming that you didn't notice Marcus's presence in the break room until you closed your closed your locker door and found him standing on the other side, leaning against the cold metal.

"You didn't tell Emma we broke up?"

Marcus's forehead was wrinkled with confusion, arms crossed across his chest which only made them look bigger, more muscular, then usual. After staring at him for a beat too long, you looked back to your handful of things, turning and dumping them all on the nearest table and sorting through them.

"Must have slipped my mind." You muttered, hastily shoving things in your bag, knowing full well why you hadn't mentioned it to Emma. Through out the whole store rebuild, you'd been able to make excuses about Marcus's absence in your life, holding out on the thought you'd talk in person and fix things - and while that hadn't happened it was months too late to explain it to Emma now. "What does it matter?"

"Y/n..." Despite the soft look on his face, Marcus's tone of voice had a certain edge to it that worried you. Suddenly, he couldn't hold your gaze, and begin to fidget where he stood. "We're not together anymore, that's why it matters. Poor kids going to get confused."

"I don't know, Marcus." Dropping whatever you had been trying to shove into your bag, you let out a sigh, hands gripping the table as your head dropped. "Maybe because I thought things would be different."

Marcus's entire demeanour changed at that, moving away from the lockers he had leaned against to move closer to you. Apprehensive in his movements, Marcus reached out for you, sure this was the sign he'd been looking for that things could be salvaged between the two of you, however, his hand dropped as you turned to face him, not wanting to take things too far or out of context. It was better this way, he assured himself.

"Maybe they still can be."

It was all you'd wanted to hear, that things could be fixed, and that the two of you could go back to how things used to be - nights spent cuddled up in your apartment, eating take out with a movie on in the background, far too lost in the other to really focus on the film - but then you thought back to your last conversation in the break room, and those good times in your apartment seemed too far away to reach. "Well, from what I recall, you made it pretty clear you wanted to be friends."

Marcus frowned, arms folding across his chest again as he stepped closer to you. "I don't recall you disagreeing." He'd said it as soft spoken as he could, though the words rubbed you wrong, something about them feeling insincere as feelings of insecurity bubbled within you. Things were too far gone to be fixed, you'd been sure of it and now this? This seemed unreal - and not in the good way.

"I don't recall you asking." You spat, picking up your bag and hauling it onto your shoulder, coat being held in your hands as turned away from him, leaving the break room with a big bubble of hurt in your chest. You'd heard exactly what you wanted from Marcus and yet, it didn't change anything for you; you didn't feel any better about what had happened or your relationship with Marcus. Why?

Marcus stood in shock in the break room, hands tucked into the pockets of his coveralls as he stared longingly at the door. The perfect opportunity had arisen for things to be worked out, and yet, they hadn't been. You'd both practically confessed to how you'd wished you'd still been together, and yet you weren't. Why?

As you walked through the back of the store, coat half on and bag slung loosely over your shoulder, you noticed Glenn gleaming down at a seemingly afraid new hire. What was her name again? Kathy? Katie? Chloe?

"Yeah. Just, tomorrow, try and remember to clock in, 'cause that way, you'll get paid. But, you know, great dry run." Glenn patted her shoulder roughly, a tight lipped smile covering his face before walking away, ignoring they way she spluttered her way to an explanation. "Good night!"

"Kelly, is it?" The blonde slumped-in-defeat posture quickly straightened as she realised she wasn't the only person in the room, hands smoothing down the front of her outfit before she turned to face you. "You not clock in today?"

"Nobody told me." With a deep frown, she avoided your gaze, assuming you were here to dig into her just like Glenn had. "I didn't have to do it at my old job so-"

"Hey, it's no stress." You dismissed with a shake of your head, reaching your hand out to her which she carefully held, unsure at where you were going with this. "We'll go jimmy the machine for you, it's not too hard."

"What?" Kelly hadn't seen a glimmer of kindness in the St Louis store on her first day - which had been mostly spent confused and alone - now however, she was beginning to think she may like it here much more then she first thought.

"Yeah, I figured out how to do it a while back." You replied enthusiastically, holding the blondes hand tightly as you directed the pair of you towards the clock in machine. "I forget to clock in all the time - unless I see someone else doing it - doesn't mean I should be docked my hard earned pay, right?"

"Right." Kelly pulled out her clock in card at your request, placing it gently in the palm of your hand so that you could click her in and fix her earlier mistake. "I'm Kelly... but you already knew that."

"Y/n." You smiled back at the shorter girl, handing back the clock in card as the screen lit up green showing the success to your efforts. "Welcome to cloud 9, Kelly. I'm sure you'll come to love it here."

The blondes eyes didn't leave yours as a wide smile curved onto her lips for the first time today. "Yeah, I think I will."

I have made a serious and continuous lapse in my judgement and😔😔😔😔 Jk

So..... 3 months was quite the unexpected hiatus

my boyfriend of two years broke up with me and then I had this rebound Christmas fling and then I had my mock exams and amongst other things it's been a pretty hectic few months. But I'm here!!!!! And hopefully back with some more passion for writing again and a semi-regular upload schedule.

With the new year I hope to bring some new beginnings - so....... going to try a bi-weekly Wednesday uploads for SOTS and hopefully bi-weekly Friday requests uploads 😩😩😩 let's see how well that goes lol (I've had a Jonah fix ready for 5 MONTHS just haven't edited it 😭😭)

Is there a masterlist of, like, actors and celebrities that have come forward for trans rights?

I know the internet has all sorts of collections of people who've done something messed up and those always depress me but reading about David Tennant being supportive in the face of the UK government and current legislation and stuff really hit me and I'd love to be able to see who else is out there standing up for us and what's right.

About: Saddler is dead, and with him the threat that was hanging over the two survivors of the island. Leon and Ashley return home with the intention of getting their lives back on track, but it’s not going to be that easy. Two years have passed since they returned from that hell and it seems that everything is back to its place, but it seems that Spain was only the beginning.

CHAPTER 4

The door to the large workshop opened slowly, letting in a tall woman accompanied by a young student.

“You can leave the reports on the table Sasha.” Professor Narsson told him, walking with a stack of books toward the bookshelves.

Sasha, a young boy with black hair and brown eyes. He had been Narsson's secretary since she had moved to Amherst College. He looked around, surprised not to see his blond companion.

“Ashley didn't come?”

Narsson put down her books noisily.

“I told her to come later, there's a meeting and I want her rested and looking her best.”

Sasha raised an eyebrow.

“I don't have any meetings on the agenda Enma.”

The woman smiled, snapping her fingers with a "eureka".

“Indeed my dear Watson. It was the only way to force her to sleep and get her have some self-care.”

The boy smiled picking up the messy table.

“I still find it hard to believe that she came with you to this university.”

Narsson smiled, remembering clearly her first encounter with the blonde. That time in one of their talks, after she had already seen her several times in them and she finally had the courage to ask her first question.

"Why are you doing this?" she had asked. When she met her eyes and saw the seriousness in them, she knew it wasn't a simple answer of "because I like it." No.

"There are many undiscovered mysteries in this world, mysteries that could, perhaps, help us in the future. If I don't do it myself I don't know if there will be others who will take my same steps, but what I do know is that I'm not going to sit around to find out."

She finished grouping the books with a smile and turned to Sasha.

“I look for mysteries to unravel, but I have to admit that Ashley alone is already an enigma that sometimes I can't decipher.”

The secretary turned to his boss.

“I thought you were close.”

Emma nodded.

“We are, but” she paused for a moment, looking at Graham's scribbled papers on the table “there are things about her that no one knows. Things she doesn't tell and I don't know if she ever will.”

The two were silent for a few long seconds as they finished organizing the files. Sasha raised his chocolate eyes to the skylight in one wing of the workshop roof and saw dark clouds approaching.

“Today, the day I leave my umbrella at home, it has to rain.” he mumbled.

Narsson looked up and smiled playfully.

“We can ask Ashley to drive us home then.”

Sasha sighed.

“You like her chauffeuring you too much.”

The teacher let out a wicked chuckle.

“An apprentice has to make sure her master is safe, doesn't she?”

Sasha scoffed incredulously.

“I'm still wondering how you've survived without her so far.” he whispered.

“Did you say something?”

The boy smiled.

“That you take too much advantage.”

Narsson shook her head dismissively.

“I'm sure she likes to do it.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“How do you know that?”

The woman's smile grew faint and soft, remembering.

“You met her later, but I could see how much she struggled to be among so many people in Boston. I can tell she's more relaxed when she's alone with us.”

Sasha watched her carefully, listening to her words now with a more serious tinge, showing her more adult and observant side.

“I hadn't noticed.”

“And neither had I until the first time she asked me that question and I became more interested in her. She hides it very well, she seems to be trying very hard not to show that vulnerability.”

“Could it be shyness?”

Narsson denied.

“You are shy, she... There is something else behind that smile she always shows us, something before we met her. I don't know what kind of life the president's daughter has, but I have a feeling it's one where if you don't show you have teeth they go for your throat.”

“I guess that's why she has James and Maria around her all the time.”

“Yeah, I think so too.”

Sasha looked at his watch and picked up his work bag.

“I have to leave for the library and administration. Ashley should be here in an hour, please don't do anything dangerous in that time.”

Narsson looked offended.

£I'm a responsible adult, how can you doubt me?”

Sasha rolled his eyes.

“An adult I doubt, responsible definitely not.”

A ball of paper flew at him, dodging it as he walked out the door.

“You're disrespectful to your elders!

“Says the one who needs a secretary to remember to eat and an apprentice to tow her around.”

“ALEKSEY!!!”

Sasha laughed closing the door and hurrying towards the library.

The smell of rain made her look up from her shoes. She had been able to get some more sleep after waking up twice. She still had that strange feeling in her body. She looked out the window for the fifth time that morning and still saw nothing.

She was convinced that the lack of sleep was taking its toll. Maybe she should talk to Katherine. She sighed, putting the notebooks in her backpack. She had been off the drugs for a long time and didn't like having to resort to them again, but when she ran out of options...she had no choice.

Sleeping with the dogs suited her, but she didn't want to spoil them to sleep with her, so she didn't abuse their company except on certain occasions.

She glanced at her watch, adjusted her bicep bracelet before pulling on a sweatshirt and prepared to walk out the door.

She stopped abruptly at the threshold.

She didn't know that smell.

And that wasn't good.

She had a mental library of the smells of her building and neighborhood. As strange as it sounded, she had no choice but to identify them so she wouldn't freak out at every slight change in the environment.

And that's why it worried her.

She closed the door and walked cautiously down the stairs, waving to the early morning neighbors. She stepped out into the doorway and sniffed the air.

The scent was gone.

She peered into the treetops, identifying the direction of the wind.

Could it have been some passing wild animal? It might have been an unusual air current, was the most logical reasoning, but then... Why did she have that strange sense of familiarity?

With her senses alert she walked towards her 4x4. Anyone would call her paranoid, but as far as she was aware, being alert had kept her alive.

She started the engine and rolled down the windows. Maybe during the trip the smell would return and she could identify it.

She looked down the street and saw Maria coming out of the doorway. Ashley drove up to “Looks like we're going to have a storm today.” sighed the brunette.

Her protégé's golden orbs glanced out of the corner of her eye as she responded with a simple "uh-huh."

Maria turned to her.

“Is something wrong?”

Ashley adjusted her rearview mirror.

“Not at the moment, but there's a scent I'm not familiar with and I don't know where it came from.”

Maria tensed in the seat.

“Have you seen anyone?”

Ashley denied.

“Have you?”

“No.”

The two were silent until Maria put on her seatbelt and looked straight ahead.

“I'm going to call James. I'll be with you in the workshop today.”

Ashley turned to the woman.

“You don't need to go to such extremes.”

“Yeah well, you thought that two years ago too, and you were kidnapped.”

The two looked at each other seriously. She knew Maria was stubborn, but she didn't want her to overprotect her just because she had picked up an unidentified scent.

Ashley sighed.

But she was right.

If it was nothing they would just go home like every day.

She just hoped it was nothing, after all she hadn't been sleeping well and it may have been because of her lack of sleep.

She released the brake and started off in the direction of the university while Maria contacted James.

15 minutes later they found the man waiting in the campus parking lot.

“Has there been a problem?” James asked worriedly.

Ashley got out of the car, denying.

“I just caught a whiff of a smell I don't know, nothing else, but Maria is capable of turning the whole university upside down for me to recognize it.”

James laughed.

“Well, it's not for nothing that she's the lynx of our security group.”

His partner rolled her eyes, adjusting her gun under her jacket.

“It's not illegal to be cautious.”

“It should be if it means clearing an entire hospital for a broken camera.”

The agent grunted under her breath, muttering curses that James was present that day.

“But it could have been something.”

Ashley laughed as she watched her two bodyguards bicker with glee as she pulled the bags out of the trunk.

“Well, now that it's the three of us, what do you thin–”

The wind changed direction and the young woman's pupils dilated violently. Her lungs filled and her heart produced adrenaline, tensing her muscles.

James and Maria noticed her sudden change and their smiles disappeared.

“Ashley, what's wrong?”

Their question was barely an echo. The hair on the back of her neck stood up as she began to identify a jumble of scents that did not bode well.

And among them she smelled gunpowder.

He opened the library door and looked for a place to sit. He went to check out his notes when he saw that he had left a notebook in Narsson's workshop. Sasha sighed heavily and with a grunt retraced his steps.

Enma slid the pen swiftly over the documents. Four books lay open in front of her on different pages, writing notes in the margins. She still had to finish the paperwork from her last trip with Ashley to Australia. University paperwork was a headache, both before the trip and after. Ashley's transfer alone was hell.

She never thought Graham would take all the non-validating subjects at once in order to get ahead. It was something that hadn't been done, but after the meeting they had with the principal she agreed.

The deal?

She had to meet the requirements of 2 years in one, otherwise she would be expelled. The director thought it was fun to see if she was capable. The result was impressive and there she was now, finishing a degree in paleobiology and traveling with her on expeditions in search of secrets hidden underground.

A chiming sound in the skylight caused the teacher to look up and see the first drops falling on the glass. She turned on the speakers and let the soft ambient music accompany her along with the dancing rain.

“You stay in the car.”

“My ass.”

Maria frowned at the response.

“You can escape if James and I don't manage to find the suspect.”

Ashley tensed her muscles.

“And stand here with my arms crossed? We don't even know if it's a person.”

“All the more reason.” James interjected, placing his hand on the young woman's strong shoulder.

Graham looked at them defiantly.

“Sometimes I feel like you treat me like a child.”

“Don't be silly, you are The President's daughter, all caution is little after the previous incident.”

“I refuse to-”

An explosion made them react and take cover.

James and Maria drew their weapons and turned back to their area of cover, but something sped past them.

“ASHLEY!!!” they shouted in unison running after her.

Narsson and Sasha were in that direction.

Please let them be alright.

She coughed violently, trying to get the dust out of her throat. Her eyes burned and watered as her ears buzzed with ringing. She dragged her hands across the floor blindly, feeling pinpricks of tiny crystals embedding themselves in her palms.

“Hel–”

Coughing cut off her call for help, forcing her to try to catch her breath. She half-opened her eyes only to see a curtain of dust around her and then heard another person gasp.

She swallowed as much saliva as she could to clear her throat.

“Sasha!” she called in desperation, crawling on all fours through the dirt.

The other person continued to cough loudly, trying to answer the call, but without much success.

The buzzing began to soften, but her head was spinning from the pounding against the ground.

“Prof…” the voice finally managed to get out of Sasha's throat, soothing the growing anguish that had arisen in Narsson. She looked around. What had happened? One second before she was writing at her desk and the next she was on the floor with a gash on her forehead and unable to move her leg properly. She grunted trying to get up, but the sound of glass breaking reached her. She turned toward the source only to be swept away by a hand that grabbed her by the hair. With a scream she felt it tugging at her, lifting her up. She kicked trying to get away from her assailant, but to no avail. A punch in her side made her gasp for air and cry out in pain.

The curtain of dust began to dissipate.

“Emma!” Sasha shouted, trying to pull himself upright. Narsson grabbed the hand of his attacker, a stranger in a worn military suit. She delivered a kick to his knee, earning a furious snarl and tossed her around like a rag.

“LET HER GO!!!!” shouted the young man trying to get up and stand straight.

Narsson blanched as the man's free hand pulled out a gun.

He pointed it at Sasha and he froze.

His index finger tightened on the trigger.

Narsson screamed.

And fired.

A body stepped in, receiving the impact in the shoulder and before Emma could process what happened a shadow jumped up and kneed her assailant in the face. The man dropped the weapon and the teacher with a shriek of pain, falling to the ground.

“ARE YOU OKAY?!!!”

Narsson looked up to meet anguished golden eyes.

“ASHLEY!!!”

The man loaded the gun and took aim. Ashley reacted like lightning and lifted the heavy oak table before being shot. The roar echoed through the workshop racing the young woman's heart, filling her veins with adrenaline.

"Focus."

She counted the bullets and the instant the magazine was empty she leapt over the barricade.

The mercenary, too big to react to the woman's speed and confused by the force with which she hit him, felt his knee give way, split and his jaw unhinge from an upward elbow. All around him bullets whistled, her guards holding off the other two attackers accompanying him. She gritted her teeth knocking the man to the ground and tying him up quickly. A shudder ran through and she covered her head before taking a kick that sent her flying through the air.

But she was ready. She felt her cheek burn.

Not this time.

She was no longer the coward of 2 years ago.

Her eyes flashed and to the second assailant's surprise she charged at him. She dodged the direction of the weapon and a chair hit him in the side, knocking him off balance.

He had not expected that force, it was not what he had been told, one of them was not supposed to know how to fight, not like that.

A bullet hit him in the forearm, causing him to roar before he was punched twice in the temple and once in the nose. He rolled quickly and looked to the back of the room, where two agents were aiming at him without hesitation. He cursed under his breath and dropped a grenade from his belt.

Ashley saw the projectile and ran towards Narsson lifting her off the floor before impact. The wave threw her against the workshop doors, smashing through them and slamming into the corridor wall, knocking the wind out of her.

Dust filled the corridor quickly and soon the sirens of the fire department and police could be heard.

She coughed loudly and stood up with a pained grunt turning to her teacher.

“Are you... okay?” she gasped.

The woman on the floor sobbed in anguish, looking up at her apprentice. Ashley watched her in despair, her face streaked with sweat, blood and dust, her cheekbone reddened from the hook received from one of the assailants.

“I th...ink...yes.” she whispered with her body trembling and her eyes reddened with tears and pain.

The two stood up, Ashley towing the teacher, and turned to the rest of the group. Graham exclaimed as he saw James' bloody shoulder next to Sasha, splattered with the blood of his savior.

The man looked the young woman in the eye and smiled.

“Relax, it's a clean wound, it doesn't seem to have hit anything important.” He moved his arm only to regret his action.

The quick footsteps of the officers were heard approaching towards them. Maria and James covered Ashley and spoke to the officers. The EMTs quickly attended them, trying to focus on Ashley, but she refused, asking them to check James and Narsson first.

A short time later DSO officers came to talk to them and finally took away the assailant that Ashley had managed to knock down.

They studied her in detail, looking for any serious injuries, but she only had abrasions on her knuckles and bruises on her forearms and cheek. Suddenly her cell phone began to ring in her backpack, lying on the side of the hallway.

She picked it up, catching her breath.

“I'm fine, Dad.”

The man was left with the question in his mouth at the quick response.

“Are you hurt?”

“Just some bruises. James took a bullet and Professor Narsson may have broken her ribs and leg.”

There were a few long seconds of silence.

“Are you sure? Maybe it would be safer if you went home.”

“Dad I'm fine, Maria and James have been with me and they didn't come after me. We don't even know what their objective was.”

President Graham sighed pressing the bridge of his nose.

“I don't want to lose you again.”

“And you won’t. I'm fine and you know it could have happened to me in Boston or at home, but this time I'm not alone and I'm ready, okay? Can you give me a vote of confidence?”

The two were silent for a few long seconds until the president sighed again.

“Sorry, I trust you.”

Ashley smiled in relief.

“Thank you, I love you. I'll accompany Enma and I'll call you when things have calmed down, okay?”

“Okay, be careful.”

She hung up with her heart in her throat and sat down on the floor against the wall.

She looked ahead, towards the workshop, where the firemen were examining the scene. She saw the bullet shells scattered on the floor and inhaled deeply, taking in the strong smell of gunpowder in the air.

The rain was lashing hard against the windows and memories of the island soon came back to her.

But she could make out a tinge, a scent that was familiar but she couldn't quite figure out from what or where.

Classes were suspended that day and they proposed to postpone them for the rest of the week. Ashley and the others were questioned to try to understand why they had been attacked, but found no clues. The DSO took over the investigation by order of the president and they soon got down to work, although the investigation was secret even among their department members.

He took a deep breath after talking to his daughter for the second time. He was glad nothing had happened to her, but now he was in a dilemma.

James was out of action and Maria alone could not handle Ashley, Professor Narsson and Aleksey. Right now the DSO was limited in personnel between missions and guards. He didn't want to leave them in charge of just anyone, he needed someone he could trust.

The president rested his forehead against his clasped hands. He had to think of candidates to bolster her security, at least until the reason behind the attack was discovered. The FOS was already working on finding out where those mercenaries were coming from, but for now they had to wait first for the captured mercenary to wake up, until then everything was being handled under extreme confidentiality, after all, having information about the president's daughter being attacked circulating everywhere was not a good idea.

He sighed heavily. He had to think fast, there was no time.

The sound of the keys echoed in the room. The letters slid over Hunnigan's glasses. Sometimes she felt like strangling someone when she was notified about last-minute jobs. She had just received the report of a suspicious group that had attacked a college campus in Massachusetts, they still had to pass her more information, but that was all she had at the moment, no videos, no records...nothing, for now. She sighed heavily and a cup landed next to her. She looked up to meet ashen blue eyes. Patrick smiled, approaching her with the mug, which she silently accepted.

“Delays?” the brunette asked, taking a sip of his drink as he stared at the screen. Hunnigan denied.

“Last minute report. They want me to investigate the origin of a man who I know nothing about.”

Johnson gave her a sidelong glance.

“I still have a shift to cover, I was going to go out for some dinner. Do you want anything? it's on me.”

Ingrid looked at him somewhat reluctantly at first, but realized it had been 6 hours since she had eaten anything.

“I'd like some chicken, thanks.”

“Bring me a drink too.”

They both turned to the third voice and saw Leon leaning against the door frame.

“Hadn't you already left?”

“And miss your invitation to a free dinner?”

Patrick frowned.

“I don't think I included you in the offer.”

Leon held out his arms.

“'Oh, come on, is that how you treat your friends?”

“Just like you don't wake up your friends on a workday after a bad night.”

Hunnigan looked from side to side at them, questioning.

“Did I miss something?”

Patrick hurried to finish his drink and walk to the door.

“Nothing important, I'll be back in 30 minutes.” He walked past Leon who smiled mischievously at him. “traitor.”

“I love you too.”

Patrick grunted and walked away.

Hunnigan looked at his partner questioningly, piercing him with her gaze. Leon shrugged his shoulders.

“What?”

“You've told him something.”

The man arched an eyebrow.

“Me? What have I told who?”

“Patrick is calmer than usual and brings me black coffee with three spoonfuls of sugar.”

Leon stared at her with a confused expression.

“Yeah? What's that got to do with me?”

“Well, you're the one he spends the most time with.”

“We're in charge of the president, of course we're going to be together.”

Hunnigan looked impatient.

“Leon..." she growled menacingly.

“I may have warned him about his hands.”

Ingrid's eyes widened.

“Did you tell him about that idiot?”

Leon denied.

“I've told him how the idiot ended up.”

Hunnigan looked at him, somewhat annoyed by the statement, but she didn't feel like arguing, so she let it go.

“How is everything with the president?”

Then he walked over to his partner's desk, plopping down in the nearest seat with a tired sigh.

“Sometimes I wish he would ask me to punch some of the assholes he meets with.”

“That bad?”

“Until being in his charge I never realized the shit he swallows, he has a patience that sometimes I wonder if there's a limit to it.”

“Only when it comes to Ashley.”

The name slid softly through his ears, shushing him for a few seconds.

“Yes, you're right.”

The cell phone vibrated in his pocket loudly.

“Speaking of the devil.”

He went over the last few reports before preparing to close the office for the day. He scribbled over other documents when someone knocked on the door. Graham couldn't help but sketch a lopsided smile before setting the pen down on the table.

“Come in.”

The knob turned and the door swung open to let in a young man with sapphire eyes.

“Did you call me, Mr. Graham?”
