My honest and humble opinions(i don't mean to offend anyone) about the teaser trailer of "Vikings Valhalla Season 3"
youtube
Emma and Canute are the most brilliant and interesting as always. They steal every scene they are in, whether they are together or not.
Freydis is "Lagertha 2.0" more and more... and i don't mean it in a good way.
Well, Leif seems like becoming more interesting than he was in season 2. I hope they will do this character some justice.
Harald and Helena = Bjorn and Elsewith... Am i having a dejà-vu?
And the most important thing: No Harold Godwison, No Battle of Stamford Bridge, but above all, No Battle of Hastings and No William the Goddammit Conqueror.
I think this gif embodies perfectly my idea and feelings about it:

Episode 17: Kathryn Maude on politics, the queen as evangelist, and the 11th century Encomium Emmae reginae
Tumblr media
British Library Add MS 33241, fol. 1v
In Episode 17 of Inside My Favorite Manuscript, Dot and Lindsey chat with Kathryn Maude about the 11th century Queen Emma, who was married to and had children with both the English king Æthelred the Unready and his successor the Danish king Cnut the Great. The resulting political situation was complicated, and the Encomium Emmae reginae can help us understand the lines that Emma was attempting to walk as her sons grew into adulthood and prepared to take the throne. The text survives in two copies, the earliest one of which is British Library Add MS 33241, believed to be the copy that was presented to Queen Emma herself. Kathryn walks us through the manuscript and we talk about both the politics and the materiality of this fascinating text.
Listen here, or wherever you find your podcasts.
Below the cut are more photos and links relevant to the conversation.

Folio 48r, another example. Here Emma's name is capitalized at the top.

Folio 58v, the parchment has been mended during the parchment preparation process, before the text was written.
Tumblr media
Folio 54r, space was left for initials that were never added (the penciled M is probably contemporary but was never decorated)
Tumblr media
Folio 2r, the first page of text, featuring a zoomorphic initial (i.e., an initial in the shape of an animal, in this case some sort of dragon and a fish eating each other) and colorful capitals.
Tumblr media
Folio 8r, a zoomorphic initial R made of more critters eating each other. Good for a tattoo?

“Ælfgifu and Swein ruled Norway for four years. This period became known as ‘Alviva’s time’, and she gained a reputation as tyrannical ruler who taxed the population heavily, causing the Norwegians to rebel against her. Ælfgifu and Swein were driven out, with Swein dying soon after in Denmark.
Ælfgifu made it back to England, however, around the time that Cnut died in 1035. This was advantageous for her, as it allowed her to participate in the ensuing succession dispute and act on behalf of her living son Harald. Succession disputes were arenas in which mothers could exert a great deal of influence, and in turn face harsh defamation.
(...)
Ælfgifu’s fate is unknown after fortunes turned against her. Her reputation was in tatters in both Norway and England. It was during Harthacnut’s reign that Emma had a literary work written about the events since the Danish conquest, a work which has been named the Encomium Emmae Reginae. A political justification of Emma’s actions lies behind every word. Its narrative casts aspersions on the parentage of the late King Harald, stating that Ælfgifu was a mere concubine, and that Harald was secretly the child of a servant placed into her bed. It even implicates Ælfgifu in the murder of one of Emma’s sons from her marriage to Æthelred.
All evidence indicates that these accusations do not reflect reality - but unlike Emma, Ælfgifu seemingly did not get chance to produce a work telling her side of events. Because of this, the formidable Emma is the more famous queen, while Ælfgifu has been sidelined in history. That does not mean Ælfgifu was not a rival for Emma, and every bit her match.”

I think people don't realize that in Jane Austen's England, they still very much had arranged marriage, especially for the nobility but for the gentry as well to a lesser extent, it just had extra steps.
The old way, my dad talks to your dad and then we get married, is replaced by the new way: we only let our kids go to parties where they can marry everyone there. Which is why for families from/in trade, like the Coles (Emma) or the Bingleys (Pride & Prejudice), getting past the gatekeepers was so important if they wanted to marry up (those mystical "connections"). It is also why girls needed to avoid younger brothers, who are technically allowed to be there but you don't want to marry poor!
Now the gentry was pretty large, so you probably had a diverse enough dating pool, but for the nobility, it seems that love matches were still not happening that often. We know this because a pause in Queen Victoria organizing Nobility MixersTM resulted increased peer-commoner intermarriage by 40 percent and reduced sorting along landed wealth by 30 percent.” And these couples had more babies after producing an heir, a rough measure of marital satisfaction.
And I feel like we still do this today to some extent. For people in the middle class, a woman getting an "Mrs." degree at university (just going to university to get married) may happen less in North America at least, but people do tend to marry their peers from post-secondary education or meet at work, a rough way to insure that your spouse is in and will end up in the same social class as yourself. Here is a survey about it:
Tumblr media
And I'm not rich, so really I don't know much about the rich, but they aren't sending their kids to expensive private schools for nothing. Let them "fall in love", but their only options are people the parents have approved already.

You have changed much since I saw you last, Emma. You've gone from being a Norman girl with no rights, no land, just a piece of her father's property...to this. The Queen of England. That takes skill.

Henry Winter, flirting
The first day of his visit to Francis’s country house Richard had a little voyage with Henry and Camilla in a boat. And here we have this introduction to Henry’s habits:
“He had a habit, as I was later to discover, of trailing off into absorbed, didactic, entirely self-contained monologues, about whatever he happened to be interested in at the time"
Richard was wrong, of course. Henry’s monologues were not ‘entirely self-contained’, they had particular purpose — at least, two of them were an instrument of mild pressure on Camilla, including this one which Richard heard during their voyage:
"That day he was talking about Elizabeth and Leicester, I remember: the murdered wife, the royal barge, the queen on a white horse talking to the troops at Tilbury Fort, and Leicester and the Earl of Essex holding the bridle rein… Camilla, flushed and sleepy, trailed her hand in the water… It was many years later, and far away, when I came across this passage in The Waste Land: Elizabeth and Leicester beating oars…”
T. S. Eliot left notes for these lines of his poem, citing History of England:
Tumblr media
Author of this letter, Alvaro de la Quadra, was a Spanish diplomat and Catholic clergyman, he apparently had a right to marry a couple. For many years Leicester was queen’s favourite and suitor for her hand, but she didn’t want to marry — didn’t want to share her power with anyone, and used her claimed virginity as a political asset. Eventually, Leicester got tired of waiting, and married another woman, which broke the queen's heart.
In view of these facts, the boat scene in TSH looks so ironic. Richard’s surname, Papen, means ‘priest, cleric’ in North German, and he also was a foreign figure in their group, like that Spanish bishop in England. However, Richard wasn't able to marry anyone.
I guess, in such a manner Henry was telling Camilla: "I’m ready to be with you right here, now. But don’t make me wait for too long". And Camilla was flushed, because she understood this reassurance mingled with warning.
Another instance of this mild pressure was quoting passages about Emma Bovary, whose chaotic love choices ruined her life: Sa pensée, sans but d'abord, vagabondait au hasard, comme sa levrette, qui faisait des cercles dans la campagne… “Her thoughts were wandering at first without any purpose” — could it mean "Camilla, make up your mind, or you’ll end up like madame Bovary''?
From Henry’s point these monologues were probably a sort of flirting, an indirect way to show romantic interest towards Camilla.
Come on, Henry, why spend so many words, when you can say Cubitum eamus?
