Over the last several days, the Amazon rainforest has been burning at a rate that has alarmed environmentalists and governments worldwide. Mostly caused by farmers clearing land, the fires have thrown the spotlight on Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro’s policies and anti-environment stance. Where are the Amazon fires happening?  Started in the Amazonian rainforests, the fires have impacted populated areas in the north, such as the states of Rondônia and Acre, blocking sunlight and enveloping the region in smoke.  The smoke has wafted thousands of miles to the Atlantic coast and São Paulo, according to the World Meteorological Organization.  Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE) has reported that forest fires in the region have doubled since 2013, and increased by 84% compared to the same period last year.  This year alone there have been 72,843 fires, it said, and more than 9,500 of those have happened over the past few days. This cycle is a delicate balance. How has the international community reacted?  Germany and Norway have suspended funding for programmes that aim to stop deforestation in the Amazon and have accused Brazil of doing little to protect the forests.  Indigenous groups and environment activists have led protests and criticised Bolsonaro for his comments and policies. About the species  Named Adratiklit boulahfa, it is also the first stegosaurus to be found in North Africa.  Its remains were discovered in the Middle Atlas mountains of Morocco, and the study describing it was led by Dr Susannah Maidment of the London’s Natural History Museum (NHM).  The scientists believe it is not only a new species but also belongs to a new genus.  The name is derived from the words used by the Berber (an ethnic group indigenous to North Africa) for mountains (Adras), lizard (tiklit) and and the area where the specimen was found. An article published on 21st August in Ideas for India, authored by Mushfiq Mobarak and Vikas Dimble and originally appearing in Yale Insights, suggests that the existing systems of microcredit have a limited impact on the long-term wellbeing of the recipients. What is microcredit?  Microcredit refers to the granting of very small loans to impoverished borrowers, with the aim of enabling the borrowers to use that capital to become self-employed and strengthen their businesses.  Loans given as microcredit are often given to people who may lack collateral, credit history, or a steady source of income. Objectives of microcredit  The core idea of microcredit is that a small loan will provide access to the larger economy to people who typically live outside the scope of the institutions on which the mainstream economy rests.  Such a loan is meant to enable them to commence with productive activities, and will give them the initial boost required to gain entry into an industry, after which production will be able to sustain itself, and the loan will gradually be repaid.  Microcredit agreements frequently do not require any sort of collateral, and sometimes may not even involve a written agreement, as many recipients of microcredit are often illiterate. Why are microcredit institutions failing to deliver long-term benefits?  The article in Ideas for India cites a 2015 study that found “a lack of evidence of transformative effects of microfinance on the average borrower”.  Another study found that having access to microcredit made very little difference to changing the lifestyles of borrowers, based on six indicators: household business profits, business expenditures, business revenues, consumption, consumer durables spending, and spending on temptation goods.  These indicators only saw a 5% impact when microcredit was available.  The primary reason for the lackadaisical effects of microcredit is the stringent repayment schedule offered by most microcredit institutions.  Since most borrowers to whom microcredit is given have little to no credit history as a result of their exclusion from traditional systems of credit, institutions offering microcredit are unable to judge the risk associated with lending to certain borrowers, and cannot be sure what the risk of them defaulting will be.  To lower the risk of defaulting, microcredit lenders therefore resort to repayment schedules that demand an initial repayment that is almost immediate, after which borrowers must adhere to an inflexible weekly schedule for repayments.  The effect of this is that borrowers are unable to use the loans on investments that will take some time to be fully realised, and instead are forced to use the loans they receive on short term investments that only boost production to an extent, and the overall growth of their incomes remains meager. How can the microcredit system be reformed to have greater benefits for borrowers?  Once repayment began, both groups again had the same schedule.  Three years after the initial loans were given out, the study found that borrowers who received the grace period were more likely to have started a new business, and also reported both higher profits and household incomes.  As for the barriers to assessing credit risk, these can be mitigated by using community information. Which is part of the reason I'm doing this. The last time I had to take an international flight alone I was 15 and had teared up at the sheer responsibility after hugging my dad goodbye at security. I almost teared up this time when everyone got out at their terminal and I had to drive off to mine, getting out to give hugs and then waving through the back window.
The airport consisted of many lines but I got through security right in time to board and take a shuttle to my Emirates plane, likely the largest one I've ever taken. 7 hours and 2 movies I'd already seen later, I landed in Dubai and exited into the largest airport to pair with my largest plane. A super pristine, high-tech, shopping mall, I followed bright signs through designer stores to a train that took me to my correct connection terminal and then had to walk quite a ways still. I just had time to go to the bathroom, get water, and eat the semi-decent sandwich I'd saved from the flight. I had asked a Thai woman as simply as I could where to find the bus to which she replied what I interpreted as "this side" where I waited and not "inside" which I think she was directing me to the escalators down a floor. Oh well. We were in no rush.
I finally got on the shuttle and paid the 60 bhat (~$2) fare and put in my headphones for the nearly hour long journey with traffic. We passed beautiful shrines and monuments right in the median of the highway and then stopped just a couple of blocks from my hostel. Hauling my pack onto my back, I opened maps and set off down the street through stalls and markets selling clothing, food, trinkets everything and anything. The energy was palpable as I couldn't help but feel a little giddy, a surprising emotion after all of the travel. Maybe I was just really excited to have finally arrived after all of these months planning this trip.

On March 20th a new terminal will open at Muscat International Airport, transforming operations for the carrier and offering a dramatic boost to the domestic tourism sector.

The opening of the new $1.8 billion facility will be akin to the overnight opening of a new airport.

The existing terminal will cease operations at midnight, with the carrier resuming its work the next day in the new state-of-the art complex on the other side of the airfield.

Featuring nearly one hundred check-in counters, ten baggage belts, 40 gates, and 29 aircraft stands with jet-bridges, as well as a new control tower, it will increase capacity significantly at what has, until now, been an outdated facility.

Oman Air flights currently touching down in Muscat are forced to settled in remote parking spots, leaving passengers with bus transfers to the terminal taking upward of 20 minutes.

With hubs such as Abu Dhabi, Doha, and Dubai, home to Etihad, Qatar Airways, and Emirates, respectively, close by, it might be imagined Oman Air would struggle to build a transit hub.

However, political strife within the GCC has jeopardised connections across the region, leaving a relatively neutral Oman a chance to build its position in the aviation sector. 

In future, Oman Air seeks to grow its role in connecting Europe and Asia – building its profile in the east to rival its current position in the west and Indian subcontinent.

Currently Oman Air’s fleet consists of six Boeing 787 Dreamliners, six Airbus 330-300s, four Airbus 330-200s, five Boeing 737-900s, 22 Boeing 737-800, and four Embraer 175s.

By 2023 the carrier hopes to operate around 70 planes.

Key among them will be the new Boeing 737 MAX, the first of which was delivered earlier this month.

Acting Oman Air chief executive Abdulaziz Al-Raisi, explains: “This is a very exciting day for us as we take delivery of the first of our 30 Boeing MAX aircraft on order. 

“By the end of 2018 we will receive a total of five aircraft into our fleet.

“They will serve both domestic and short to medium international sectors.”

Oman Air is expected to launch three new routes this year, to Casablanca in Morocco in June, followed by Istanbul in July, and Russian capital Moscow in October.

The carrier is also assessing the possibilities of re-launching Beirut, Maldives, and Singapore in the coming months.

In June, Oman Air will also receive the first of three further 787-9 Dreamliners the carrier has on order, two of which will have a new first-class product.

The new planes, from both Boeing and Airbus, will facilitate the growing international network.

Since taking over as acting chief executive in October last year, Al-Raisi has focused on bringing down operational costs without shrinking the service offering or slowing network growth.

This has been necessary as the carrier continues to bleed red ink.

In its most recent financial report Oman Air revealed it passenger numbers increase to 7.7 million annually, but losses widened by 50 per cent to RO130 million (£240 million).

With the government seeking to gradually withdraw support from the carrier, even as it expands, the success of the new terminal is vital for the future of Oman Air.

The airline is, however, set to benefit from a renewed focus on tourism from the national government.

At present the sector remains relatively small, especially compared to booming markets in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, but that could be about to change.

In early 2016 Oman unveiled a new National Tourism Strategy, which includes an aim to double the number of international tourist arrivals to the country by 2020.

This would take the figure to around five million international guests annually, the majority of whom would arrive with Oman Air.

The initiative calls for the development of 14 tourism clusters, which are hoped to attract more tourists and encourage longer visits.

Sites that have been earmarked for development include areas of natural interest in the country’s mountains and deserts, as well as existing tourist spots, such as the Musandam Peninsula in the north; the Frankincense trail in Salalah; and old cultural areas throughout the capital, Muscat.

Early steps have been taken, with the opening of several new world class resorts. 

However, there are only still a handful of five-star properties in the country, with more work to be done in order to grow the sector.

The ultimate goal is to transform Oman from a seasonal, high-end destination to one that appeals to a variety of travellers throughout the year.

Regional tourism has also proved a boon for Oman.

During the summer months, the tail end of the Indian monsoon brings rains known as the ‘Khareef’.

Transforming the mountains around Salalah into a verdant landscape, the season is a significant draw for travellers, who come to escape the stifling heat elsewhere in the region.

The total number of visitors over the period, which in 2016 took place between June-September, reached around 653,000, with guests from the UAE, India, Saudi Arabia and India make up the majority of travellers.

Oman Air, which has been accused of sacrificing domestic routes in order to serve international passengers, may however be challenged in this market by Salam Air.

The low-cost carrier, which launched last year, is seeking to expand its operations at Salalah to being in regional guests to the growing destination.

As of July 2016, Oman increased the length of its multiple-entry tourist visas for certain foreign nationals in a bid to boost visitor numbers.

Citizens of 38 countries now have the option of purchasing multiple-entry visas that are valid for three months, up from the previous allowance of 21 days.

Meanwhile, visitors from India, Bangladesh and the Philippines can apply for an extended tourist visa if they have an Omani sponsor.

The hope is that this relaxation of visa requirements will encourage longer stays, and visits to multiple regions and attractions, and simultaneously boost the fortunes of government-owned Oman Air.

With the new terminal set to debut, a supportive owner in the Omani government, and the latest planes set to arrive, the future could well be bright for this growing regional champion.

10 biggest storylines leading up to Winter Olympics

It may be hard to believe, but the 2018 Winter Olympics are upon us. The Games come at an interesting time given American, South Korean and North Korean political relations, but as the opening ceremony approaches, differences are being set aside in an effort to allow the Olympics to go off peacefully.

There are many stories to look forward to at the upcoming Games. Here’s a look at the 10 biggest storylines leading up to the 2018 Winter Olympics.

1. Four new events added

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognized that times are changing and, as a result, they have added four new events for the 2018 Winter Olympics. Athletes will now compete in big air snowboarding and freestyle skiing, as well as mass start speed skating and mixed doubles curling.

As entertaining as big air snowboarding and freestyle skiing may be, most American viewers will undoubtedly be drawn to mixed doubles curling because of how popular the sport has become in recent years. In fact, outside of hockey, it may end up being the most-watched event of the Olympics (seriously…). The addition of these four events adds a little extra flavor to the Games this year.

2. NHL takes a pass on 2018 Winter Olympics

In April of 2017, the NHL officially announced that they would not participate in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. An official statement cited disruption of the 2017-2018 season as one of the reasons.

“We have previously made clear that while the overwhelming majority of our clubs are adamantly opposed to disrupting the 2017-18 NHL season for purposes of accommodating Olympic participation by some NHL players,” the NHL’s statement said in part.

Other issues stemmed from the IOC’s refusal to pay for travel, insurance, accommodations and other costs for NHL players, which it had done previously. And while other entities stepped up to cover those costs, there were ultimately too many issues to overcome. The National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) and the league’s players were not happy with the NHL’s decision, but with the Olympic Games now looming, the vast majority of players have reluctantly packed it in and accepted they would not be participating in 2018. It will be the first time NHL players were left off Olympic rosters since 1998.

3. Nigeria gets first-time Winter representation with female bobsled team

Nigeria has been participating at the Olympics since 1952 with the sole exception of 1976 Summer Games, which were boycotted, but never before had they been represented at the Winter Games. That is, until 2018.

Seun Adigun, Ngozi Onwumere and Akuoma Omeoga, a trio of women, became the first-ever Nigerians to qualify for the Winter Olympics. And if that weren’t impressive enough, they are actually Africa’s first-ever bobsled team — male or female — to compete in the Winter Olympics.

“I basically got into the sport of bobsledding in 2015 after a little bit of a hiatus from athletics,” Adigun told PEOPLE. “I also learned that Nigeria, the country, had never had any Winter Olympians … And then to cap it off, I learned that the continent of Africa had never been represented, man or woman, by any bobsled team. So I was like, ‘Okay, this is obviously something that is gonna hang over my head if I don’t step in and try and do something about it.'”

The group initially turned to crowd-sourcing to cover their Olympic expenses, including travel, but VISA eventually stepped in to fund them. As a result, we’ll all get to witness more history.

4. North Korea agrees to send athletes to Olympics

In what was considered a remarkable and unexpected breakthrough, North Korea agreed to send athletes to South Korea to participate in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. The decision stunned many as tensions between the two nations have continued to escalate in recent months over the North Korea’s nuclear and missile program.

In addition to athletes, North Korea will also send a cheering squad and a performance-art troupe to South Korea. This will mark North Korea’s first participation in the Winter Olympics in eight years, and a dramatic change in political policy. Just prior to the 1988 Summer Olympic Games in Seoul, which the North had boycotted, a bomb was planted on a Korean Air passenger plane, killing all 115 on board. The South believed the terrorist attack was aimed at sabotaging the Games.

It is not known if the North attached any conditions to its decision to attend, but the IOC has agreed to help cover the athletes’ expenses, including travel. A safe route to the Games is still being determined.

5. Russia banned from 2018 Winter Olympics

In December of 2017, the IOC officially announced that the Russian Olympic Committee was suspended from the upcoming Olympic Games due to a doping controversy. The ban came more than a year after the World Anti-Doping Agency concluded “beyond a reasonable doubt” that the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA), Ministry of Sport, Federal Security Service (FSB) and Centre of Sports Preparation of the National Teams of Russia had “operated for the protection of doped Russian athletes” within a “state-directed failsafe system.”

It was alleged that nearly a third of all Russian medals won during the Sochi Olympics were by athletes who were illegally doping. Ultimately, there will not be a Russian team during the 2018 Games, but several Russian athletes will be allowed to compete under the designation Olympic Athlete from Russia (OAR) and will sport a neutral Olympic flag.

6. First openly gay man qualifies for Olympics

On Jan. 7, figure skater Adam Rippon qualified for the 2018 Winter Olympics and in doing so, became the first openly gay man to represent the American flag at either the Summer or Winter Games. “I am so excited to be going to my first Olympics in a few weeks,” Rippong tweeted after qualifying. “Being the first out male selected to represent the [flag] at a Winter Olympic Games is awesome.”

In addition to blazing a path for the U.S., Rippon feels a sense of responsibility to show athletes from countries like Morocco, Togo, Kenya, Eritrea, Dominica, Uzbekistan, Iran, India, Pakistan, Malaysia and Singapore, which outlaw homosexuality, that there’s nothing wrong or “weird” with being a gay man.

“Yes, there will be countries represented that don’t give rights to their gay citizens,” Rippon told Newsweek. “But that’s why it’s important that someone like me can go to the Olympics and show people that yes, I’m an out gay athlete, and being gay has nothing to do with who I am as an athlete.”

At 28 years old, Rippon will also become the oldest U.S. figure-skating Olympic rookie since 1936.

7. Transgender athletes allowed to compete for first time

For the first time, the IOC has ruled that transgender athletes can take part in the Olympics. Female-to-male athletes can compete “without restriction,” while male-to-female athletes must undergo hormone therapy. Previously, IOC guidelines called for athletes to have reassignment surgery followed by at least two years of hormone therapy in order to be eligible. The only remaining regulation is that male-to-female athletes must demonstrate that their testosterone levels have consistently been below the cutoff point for at least one full year prior to competition.

“It is necessary to ensure insofar as possible that trans athletes are not excluded from the opportunity to participate in sporting competition,” the IOC said in a statement. “The overriding sporting objective is and remains the guarantee of fair competition. To require surgical anatomical changes as a precondition to participation is not necessary to preserve fair competition and may be inconsistent with developing legislation and notions of human rights.”

Even among some of the transgender athletes, debate will rage about what’s fair and what’s not. Regardless of what side anyone comes down on, history will be made in Pyeongchang as transgender athletes compete without surgery for the first time.

8. Zahra Lari will compete wearing a headscarf

Along with an openly gay man and transgender athletes, the 2018 Winter Olympics will also see the first professional figure skater to compete internationally wearing a headscarf. Zahra Lari, a 22-year-old from the United Arab Emirates, will become the first skater from a Persian Gulf state to participate in international figure skating competition. And for those watching at home, along with her headscarf, Lari’s attire will be dramatically different from what they’re accustomed to seeing — she will don opaque cloth, covering her legs and matching her headscarf.

During the European Cup in Canazei, Italy in 2012, Lari had points deducted from her performance due to a “outfit violation,” but that will be a non-issue during the Winter Games in Pyeongchang, where her attire will be permitted. Ultimately, Lari has bigger goals than just the Olympics.

“My goals go beyond being the first person to represent the UAE at a Winter Olympics,” she told The Independent. “I want to compete at the Four Continents Figure Skating Championships and the World Championships. These competitions are my current goal.”

9. U.S., South Korea delay military exercises until after Olympics

With diplomatic tensions between North Korea and South Korea a concern, South Korean President Moon Jae-in requested that all U.S.-South Korean military exercises be delayed until the conclusion of the Winter Olympic Games. After a brief phone call in early January, U.S. President Donald Trump agreed.

“President Donald J. Trump spoke today with President Moon Jae-in of the Republic of Korea to discuss recent developments on the Korean Peninsula. The two leaders agreed to continue the campaign of maximum pressure against North Korea and to not repeat mistakes of the past. The United States and the Republic of Korea are committed to a safe and successful 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang. President Trump told President Moon that the United States will send a high-level delegation to the Olympics. The two leaders agreed to de-conflict the Olympics and our military exercises so that United States and Republic of Korea forces can focus on ensuring the security of the Games,” the White House said in a statement.

Not every American politician agreed with the decision, but most believe that in the interest of the athletes’ safety, it was the right call.

10. NBC will stream Olympics in VR

New events won’t be the only history made during the 2018 Winter Olympics. In fact, quite a few things on this list will mark history being made, including more than 50 hours of Olympics available in VR. NBC will provide more than 50 hours of virtual reality coverage for authenticated users with Windows Mixed Reality headsets, Samsung Gear VR, and both Google Cardboard and Google Daydream using compatible iOS or Android devices through the NBC Sports VR app. The coverage will include opening and closing ceremonies, as well as most events. NBC will also offer once daily 360-degree videos of a sport not available in VR the previous day. How amazing is that?

U.S. Laptop Ban Lifted Except for an Isolated Qatar Airways

Emirates, the world’s biggest long-haul airline, said measures barring laptops from the cabins of aircraft departing its Dubai base for the U.S. have been lifted, leaving Qatar Airways as the only major carrier still affected by the ban.

The moratorium, imposed in March, was removed Wednesday following work with local authorities and regulators on implementing the “heightened security measures and protocols” required by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Emirates said in a statement.

Dubai becomes the third major hub to normalize access to personal devices on U.S.-bound flights. Istanbul, home base to Turkish Airlines, also declared itself free of the ban Wednesday after saying on Monday that that the restrictions would be dropped, while Etihad Airways hub Abu Dhabi secured exemption last Sunday, aided by the presence of a U.S. “pre-clearance” border post there.

The moves leave Qatar Air’s Doha hub isolated as the only significant global interchange still affected by the American curbs. The carrier, also under siege from travel and airspace bans opposed by neighboring Arab states over its government owner’s links to Iran, didn’t respond to requests for comment other than referring Bloomberg to a statement on the restrictions.

Demand Dip

Escaping the laptop ban is seen as vital for Mideast operators after the measures led some customers to switch to airlines where they could still use equipment also including tablet computers and games consoles. Emirates cut back operations to the U.S., where it serves 12 cities, in response to a dip in demand from the restrictions and temporary limitations on entry visas.

Other airports among the 10 affected by the U.S. ban are also moving toward a resolution, with Saudi Arabia Airlines saying Tuesday that it effects to be free of the curbs by July 19. Amman-based Royal Jordanian said it has also asked the U.S. Transportation Services Authority to approve its response to the new guidelines requiring stricter security scans and checks.

That leaves airports in Kuwait, Morocco and Egypt — as well as Qatar Air’s Doha hub — still struggling to throw off the restrictions. Smaller airports are likely to find it tougher to comply with the heightened security steps required by the U.S., since they lack both funds and access to the latest equipment.

While the removal of the electronics ban strips away one travel hurdle for carriers, the revival of U.S. restrictions on visas for citizens of six Muslim-majority countries could still mean fewer passengers on some flights. Demand in the Persian Gulf has also weakened as the low price of crude holds back oil-based economies.

U.S. Laptop Ban Lifted Except for an Isolated Qatar Airways

Emirates, the world’s biggest long-haul airline, said measures barring laptops from the cabins of aircraft departing its Dubai base for the U.S. have been lifted, leaving Qatar Airways as the only major carrier still affected by the ban.

The moratorium, imposed in March, was removed Wednesday following work with local authorities and regulators on implementing the “heightened security measures and protocols” required by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Emirates said in a statement.

Dubai becomes the third major hub to normalize access to personal devices on U.S.-bound flights. Istanbul, home base to Turkish Airlines, also declared itself free of the ban Wednesday after saying on Monday that that the restrictions would be dropped, while Etihad Airways hub Abu Dhabi secured exemption last Sunday, aided by the presence of a U.S. “pre-clearance” border post there.

The moves leave Qatar Air’s Doha hub isolated as the only significant global interchange still affected by the American curbs. The carrier, also under siege from travel and airspace bans opposed by neighboring Arab states over its government owner’s links to Iran, didn’t respond to requests for comment other than referring Bloomberg to a statement on the restrictions.

Demand Dip

Escaping the laptop ban is seen as vital for Mideast operators after the measures led some customers to switch to airlines where they could still use equipment also including tablet computers and games consoles. Emirates cut back operations to the U.S., where it serves 12 cities, in response to a dip in demand from the restrictions and temporary limitations on entry visas.

Other airports among the 10 affected by the U.S. ban are also moving toward a resolution, with Saudi Arabia Airlines saying Tuesday that it effects to be free of the curbs by July 19. Amman-based Royal Jordanian said it has also asked the U.S. Transportation Services Authority to approve its response to the new guidelines requiring stricter security scans and checks.

That leaves airports in Kuwait, Morocco and Egypt — as well as Qatar Air’s Doha hub — still struggling to throw off the restrictions. Smaller airports are likely to find it tougher to comply with the heightened security steps required by the U.S., since they lack both funds and access to the latest equipment.

While the removal of the electronics ban strips away one travel hurdle for carriers, the revival of U.S. restrictions on visas for citizens of six Muslim-majority countries could still mean fewer passengers on some flights. Demand in the Persian Gulf has also weakened as the low price of crude holds back oil-based economies.

The often frustrating process of air travel stands to become even more difficult for many people under President Donald Trump’s administration, and the hassles could take a major toll on the U.S. travel industry.

Acquiring a U.S. visa is already an extensive process for most non-U.S. citizens, taking months or even years. But Trump’s recent directives, including an electronics ban and a stricter visa application process, signal a push for “extreme vetting” measures likely to increase hassles for non-U.S. citizens traveling to the United States.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson this month directed U.S. embassies to toughen visa screenings for “populations warranting increased scrutiny.” The order was issued in coordination with Trump’s second executive order on immigration and travel, which has been temporarily blocked by federal courts.

The move could complicate an already bureaucratic visa process and cost the country’s tourism industry millions of dollars, some experts say, because additional security measures could significantly delay visa approvals and discourage travel to the U.S.

Under the new rules, U.S.-bound travelers are subject to detailed background checks, as well a review of their social media history if they’ve ever been to a territory controlled by the self-proclaimed Islamic State. 

Embassy officials are seeking approval from the White House Office of Management and Budget to ask applicants for a 15-year history of where they have lived, worked and traveled.

If applicants are unable to provide all of the required information, embassy officials could delay or reschedule the interview process. While there are valid reasons travelers could be denied a U.S. visa, some advocates worry people may be profiled for extra scrutiny because of their name or nationality, The New York Times reports.

The Trump administration did not publicly announce the new visa screening measures, which were sent to embassies March 15 to March 17. Reuters first published a story on the new rules Thursday after reviewing copies of the cables between Tillerson and embassy officials.

Mira Ghaziri, 30, who is from Beirut and works in Dubai as PepsiCo’s nutrition manager for the Middle East and North Africa, began traveling to the U.S. on business last year. She said she fears innocuous social media posts could unfairly impact Middle Eastern travelers.

“In the Middle East, politics is such a daily topic” and everyone makes “a political statement on social media,” Ghaziri told The Huffington Post on Friday. “But this by no means will translate to action or be considered as a threat, since it’s just an opinion.”

Ghaziri said working for an American company has made it easier to get a visa, though the immigration process at U.S. airports can take longer because of her nationality.

Applying “the needed scrutiny before anyone enters the country is common sense,” Ghaziri said, “but there should be a standard way to do it across all nationalities and religions.”

Tillerson acknowledged that stricter screenings could cause “backlogs to rise,” and recommended that officials interview no more than 120 applicants per day.

Greg Chen, the director for the American Immigration Lawyers Association, told The New York Times that the the new rules could “impose a substantial burden” on applicants.

“It will make it much harder and create substantial delays,” Chen said.

Jonathan Grella, the executive vice president of public affairs for the U.S. Travel Association, said a “painful” customs process could deter tourists from choosing the U.S. as a travel destination. 

“We’re very much pro-security, but are concerned that the actual overt or deliberate welcome to America is viewed as soft when in fact it’s very real because the economic fallout could be considerable,” Grella told HuffPost. “The security blinders are tempting ... but that, obviously, comes at a risk.”

Grella said his organization hopes Trump will send a message to the world that “legitimate tourists” are still very much welcome.

It’s “naive to think, ‘We’re America and of course people will come here, and it if it’s a few less so be it. We’ve got security to tend to,’” Grella said. “That argument is flawed because that’s leaving money on the table needlessly.”

Trump’s first executive order on immigration and travel cost the U.S. at least $185 million business travel bookings, according to a February report from the Global Business Travel Association, which represents corporate travel managers.

“There was too much uncertainty and a lack of clarity around the executive order, leading to general confusion,” the association wrote in a blog post. “The net effect was that business travel bookings were delayed or canceled.”

Travelers flying direct to the U.S. from 10 airports in Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates have also been hit with more restrictions.

Experts say the Department of Homeland Security’s decision to ban electronics larger than cellphones was likely based on legitimate threats, but it’s another layer of added stress to some travelers.

“I am a researcher, and, just like journalists, we carry data in our laptops,” Banu Akdenizli, an associate professor of communication at Northwestern University in Qatar, told HuffPost. “Checking that data in with luggage is a liability. What if it gets lost or stolen?”

Grella said he hopes Trump’s competitive nature will encourage him to “soothe” the concerns of apprehensive U.S.-bound travelers for the sake of the American economy.

“It does not cost a thing stylistically or substantively to say terror is not welcome, but legitimate tourists are,” Grella said. “We are open for business still, but closed to terror.”
