America!

The topic I chose on this is America, even with faults, here is a greatness and these artists culminate the differences of views within their music. In Eminems song “White America” he maintains what I like to call a marching tempo with a clear beat. Eminem sings the problems he sees in America, such as race issues and the issues with the education system and how he was not given a chance until he met another specific rapper. The tone of the song illustrates a frustration contributing to the message being sent to anybody that is willing to listen to the art.

The next song I chose is Johnny Cash “Ragged Old Flag” being that it is not necessarily a song, but a poetic story with an instrumental background. Johnny Cash mixes the music around with a military style drum to a soft sound that transfers back to a military drum with a banjo. The story starts off with Johnny Cash meeting a member of the little town of the courthouse he was walking up to. The story of the flag represents the American flag and the history of it, the different wars and battles that it has been carried through and who commanded the troops each conflict the flag stood through. The tone is meant to develop a sense of pride in the flag and country patriotism.

The next song is “American Woman” by Lenny Kravitz, the song is a rock cover of the original by Guess Who. The song is widely misinterpreted with may thinking that it is an attack on American politics, but was actually about the women of Canada being preferred to women of America due to women seemingly to age faster in the United States. The version Lenny Kravitz did was a little slower and softer than the original but added a guitar solo that is signature of his style.

The next song I chose is “Fight the Power” by Public Enemy in the hip hop genre from the early nineties with a bouncy rhythm the artists channeled their tension from the justice system that was seemingly institutionalizing racism. This song was an act of defiance to the government to send a message to Generation X to get some of the black heroes on the wall of fame.

The next song is “It’s America” by Rodney Atkins with an up-tempo beat and a banjo backing, the song lists the good things of living in America, after stopping at a lemonade stand that would make a perfect post card. Along with the seeing people volunteering to help out the community they live in, driving in an American built vehicle traveling down back roads.

The next song is “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue” by Toby Keith, this song was inspired by the passing of his father and then the 9/11 attacks. The song maintains an up tempo beat after the beginning of the song where Toby Keith started slowly with a tribute to the American People. The lyrics develop a high sense of patriotism and became the anthem of many service members that were in the military or were about to be serving the country upon completion of boot camp.

The relevance of this topic to me, besides being in the military, is that this was my motivation to join the military after the 9/11 attacks when I was in my sophomore year in high school, I decided that I wanted to be a part of the protection of the United States, because I want everybody to enjoy the freedoms we have.

Oh I love them all! I'm not picky with flowers, but I do have a special place in my heart for roses, baby's breath, and daisies. (Also tulips)

I do! I have like three separate notes pages on my phone where, after I wake up, I go to write down my dream. I take screenshots of that, afterward, so I can look at them properly later and copy them into my dream journal for analysis, and just, ya know, fun.

Most of the time I remember them, thankfully, bc that's how I get messages. The Universe Says Things to Help, and I am so incredibly grateful for it.

I say it’s more about the balance. Dre and ODB were slowing down (the former focused more on producing than rapping) back in the 00s when I listened to rap the most, so it’s hard for me to say it didn’t impact them when they weren’t in the forefront during that era lol. And there definitely was a “bling bling” culture at the time they also got pushed a lot during that decade.

But I feel like there was still an understanding that there were rappers and goofy hip hop artists. Even with Eminem, as much as I cringe at how I listened to him as a kid, it honestly was (just for me personally) his goofy songs I liked the most because of how goofy they were. Imo the fun of Eminem was his goofy and offensive persona that he’d show off in mvs that I think made ppl like him, less his actual rap skills. And even then I didn’t know anyone who was actually into hip hop (ie, anyone who wasn’t a white kid listening to the top 40 stations) who thought Eminem was THAT good. Anyone who claimed Eminem was their favorite rapper would immediately get either their black card revoked (if they were black) or assumed to not know a THING about rap and hip hop (if they weren’t black). Like black ppl might give him his little praise and not want to run him out of the genre, but we definitely didn’t think he was close to being the best in the industry.

Like there’s always been room for casual rappers. The 80s had them, the 90s and 00s had them; that in itself isn’t the problem. IMO, it’s a main reason Drake was allowed to exist for as long as he did, especially when starting out when he wasn’t posturing all the time and doing his lover boy shit. No one had a problem with Drake when he was doing casual rap shit. But when he tried to get tough and act like he was from the streets or something when it’s like dude we know your background and we know you ain’t about that life, that’s when ppl really started having a problem.

Drake could have existed until he wanted to be the best. And Eminem for all his faults never did that. He didn’t get into his proper 1v1 beef until mgk, and I don’t consider mgk a rapper so that to me was just two men in music hating each other and being loud about it. Drake wants to be the best but the criteria for that is more than just existing in hip hop. You need to be a writer, you need crazy thick skin (so his sensitive schtick won’t work), knowledge, and actual skill as a rapper. Anyone can make bouncy music and get famous. But actually getting deep into the art of making a rap, going old school and traditional with no gimmicks just a war of words, requires real artistic vision and focus that Drake refuses to put in his shit.

And I think the art aspect is what gen z values the least. In our days’ yes there was space for fun but you still had a separation in your mind that fun and popular doesn’t mean the best. You understood that someone could be your favorite without being the best. This is something gen z struggles with I think. To them the best has to be the most popular. Because how could the world work any other way?

With older generations, we understand that not everything popular is good and vice versa for a host of reasons. And so just because we like something popular doesn’t mean we think it’s the best. But this generation will use drakes as proof that he’s good/better than someone else. This is why they’ll say he’s winning due to “replay value.” If you’re using the credentials to determine who the best rapper is, replay value doesn’t mean anything. What did they say? How did they attack the other rapper lyrically? Things like that. But to gen z, who values popularity for popularity sake, that’s a huge bonus.

Meanwhile we can’t even take Drake seriously.

i wonder if it's a generational thing to prefer kendrick over drake. yknow due to the fact that some of us grew up on 90s rap and 2000s rap and kendrick's energy is more reminiscent of that time than the man who sounds like he records everything whilst half asleep with a kazoo taped to his mouth.

[Hangover (feat.Snoop Dogg) - PSY

So I’ve been listening kpop for a long time even tho I used to hate on it not only I’ve repeatedly listening but actually know the lyrics to it I mean obviously it has snoop doggy dog in it. That's right . PSY has been on of the singers I’ve been listening to since the time I’ve been listening to songs . Big Reading

So I did this super intense reading last night that was the biggest reading I’ve ever done and it wasn’t for just me so I’m going to share it here. If you see this, it might be for you so take what resonates and leave the rest.

IMPORTANT BEFORE READING: MEDITATE AND GROUND YOURSELF! There is a lot of information that is about to be unpacked in this reading.

I did this reading by using my Santa Muerte Tarot and Oracle cards. With the Oracle cards, I will be explaining what they mean, the significance behind them and what I saw in the cards while reading them. In total for all of the cards that got pulled, there was 44. The angel number 44 means: pay attention to your intuition & inner-wisdom as your connection with your guides is VERY strong at this time. This is a very prominent theme that goes with this reading.

Oracle Cards:

Darkness - 1 - Coming out of the shadows and showing your face. Standing in YOUR power. Meditation. Meditation. MEDITATION. The song Midnight Sky by Miley Cyrus came in my phone on shuffle mode. Some lyrics that stood out to me: “The Midnight Sky is the road I’m taking, head high up in the clouds. I was born to run, I don’t belong to anyone, I don’t need to be loved by you.

Masculine - 2 - Don’t be afraid to ask questions. You might not like the answers given, but take it in stride and make the best of it. The song Cancer by My Chemical Romance came up in my head when reading this card. When looking at it, I see a gas mask. Maybe it has something to do with being gaslighted by someone close to you? Either way there are some hard lessons that you’re about to learn. The color red is very prominent not only in this card but the reading in general. Red refers to Family, Love, partnerships, etc. Someone in your family/close to you isn’t telling you the truth or respecting who you are or your boundaries. Don’t take their shit. They’re afraid of whatever truth they’re hiding to come out.

Tlaloc - 9 - Tlaloc is an Aztec god of rain & fertility. He was very feared but also respected in the fact that he could water the fields of labor with one hand and could very easily destroy that same field with the other. In this card, I saw the color of green. Green is in reference to getting justice upon whatever your situation may be. Take no shit but do no harm. While you are being disrespected by whoever it is in your situation, it’s not a good idea to do the same to them. Whatever revenge you want to exact upon the person in question, don’t do it. It will bite you in the ass. The song Bow Down by the band I, Prevail came on: “I don’t really like myself, I think I’m breaking down.”

Mictlantecuhtli - 10 - I almost immediately saw Rafiki from the Lion King when looking at this card. Not everything is as black and white as you’d like it to be. You have to look at the other person’s POV before taking any sort of action. Watch what you say and do.

Tezcatlipōca - 12 - Tezcatlipōca is an Aztec god of night, war, education & temptation. I immediately paid attention to the cheetah print cloak. Maybe the action that needs to be taken upon whoever it is needs to be a fast action. He’s also missing a leg from a battle he fought. When meditating, you need to assess what things in your life you need to sacrifice or cut out when going into this next stage of your life. Not everything you can take with you. Some things you DEFINITELY cannot take with you. 2 songs came up with this card.

Eminem - Love The Way You Lie: “It Wasn’t you, baby it was me.”

Linkin Park - Bleed It Out: “Mama help me, I’ve been cursed, death is rolling in every verse, candy paint on his brand new hearse, can’t contain him he knows he works. Fuck this hurts, I won’t lie. Doesn’t matter how hard I try. Half the words don’t mean a thing and I know that I won’t be satisfied”

Huitzilopachtli - 13 - Huitzilopachtli is an Aztec god of the son & War. The sun is a very prominent theme in this reading. The color blue very much stood out to me with this card. Blue is in reference to Wisdom, increased mental powers & concentration. What drew my most attention was the 4 swords in the back. I went through my tarot deck because the 4 of Swords wasn’t originally a card that was pulled but when I did look at it, it was reversed. What I got from this card specifically, it looks like to me you’re taking the nails out of a coffin. Make plans to trust your intuition & take the nails/swords out of the coffin you previously stored away but do it with caution like the humming bird on the Huitzilopachtli #13 oracle card in the left corner so you don’t get burnt.

Chalchiuhtlicue - 14 - Chalchiuhtlicue is an Aztec goddess of water, lakes, seas, sailors, beauty & fertility. I saw the thunderbolts upon the top of the head first. The day of reckoning/judgement day is coming. 3 songs came up with this one.

Go with the flow because you’re at the point of no return and there’s no way for you to go back. At all. Embrace that power, that thunder, as your own.

I saw Mama Imelda & Hector from the Disney movie COCO when looking at this card as well and heard another song by Rihanna called Hate That I Love You (Feat. Ne-Yo). Some lyrics: “And I can’t stand you. Must everything you do make me want to smile? Can I not like you for awhile?” And “I despise that I adore you”

Tlazolteotl - 15 - Tlazolteotl is an Aztec goddess of earth, sex, moon & birth. The moon and the birth is what I saw first. A rebirth of sorts will take place. You need to do shadow work as your ego needs to be put in check but you also need to trust your intuition. If you feel something is off, it is. And it needs to be fixed.

Quetzalcóatl - 16 - Quetzalcóatl is the most important god in the Aztec pantheon. He is a god of Knowledge, dawn, merchants, arts & professions. I thought of Pepita from Coco. Pepita is an Alebrije which in Latin cultures is more so a spirit guide taking the form of an animal. Your spirit guides are trying to tell you something so you need to pay TF attention! Do not fear and do not give up. Through perseverance and insistence, you will reach the goal that you desire and that most of all, you deserve.

Shadow - 17 - Most of people that I know and know me, know that I’m afraid of Spiders. Always have been and probably always will. I saw spiders crawling all across the face on this one. Embrace your fears and face them head-on. Now is the time to do some HEAVY shadow work and work on yourself in general. Be mindful of your thoughts, feelings & words towards yourself and others during this time.

Intellect - 22 - Some of you will be getting MAJOR downloads in the coming days and or will be doing some heavy studying. Keep your brain busy and analyze the situation your facing with rational though. Yellow is also a prominent color in this reading and this card. Yellow represents thoughts, Wisdom and knowledge.

Like with the Oracle cards, you’re on a journey of self healing & breaking generational curses. You’re on a path that you can’t turn around and go back on. You need to keep walking forwards. Right now it seems like things in your life are in disarray and that’s for a reason. You’re on your current path and dealing with these issues head-on so that others that come after you, don’t have to, they’re gonna have other issues that need to be dealt with. However, the heavy load of the curses/trauma is being dealt with you now in this lifetime because you are the most capable even though it might not seem like you think you are. You need to assess what you’re willing to let slide and willing to take with you in the next chapter of your life cause you won’t be able to bring everything with you. And when you do and you set your boundaries by putting your foot down HARD, there will be others waiting for you on the other side cheering you on because you make it to the other side a FAR better person that where you were when you started your journey. Not everybody is worthy to walk with you if they continue to act the way that they do and you have to accept that or nothing will come of the changes you’ve made for your happiness.

36  SURPRISE BETH FACT: Beth would definitely get a tramp stamp of Tramp from Lady and the Tramp, but he would be sexy.

37  Ron's favorite class in high school was Shop because he would just ditch school and go to the mall and hang out there. He wanted to take Home Ec. but Willy made him take Shop and he just assumed that “Shop” was “shopping” but he didn’t have any money so he just hung out.

40 (Beth admits this may be a retcon) In high school Ron got chocolate to sell for his track team and asked his parents (or just Willy its not clear). 55 Will Campos (body swap saga) as Ron claims that Ron is fluent in spanish because he watched a lot of telenovela, however he thinks spanish is a fictional language like elvish that they only speak on TV. 

56  Matt Arnold (body swap saga) as Ron claims that Ron has actually never farted. Actually he just thinks farts are invisible poops so… yeah. (Bonus fact: Ron thinks all eggs are just Eggs and there are no different types of eggs)

57 Willy taught Ron the quote “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” but he himself never taught Ron how to fish.

58 Ron is reluctant to talk about parenting Terry Jr. because when he married Samantha, Samantha asked him to sign an NDA (New dad agreement). This was just Samantha’s way of making sure Ron “checked off” stuff like agreeing to put Terry’s needs before his own. Ron signed it without reading it.

Unofficial but kind of canon facts/notes related to Ron (fair warning I was pretty lax with collecting these and I forget to catalog these a lot, so I only have them from the first few rescues consistently, these are mostly just random notes or things I find interesting/funny)

1 In the first ep, when terry sighs loudly/angrily Ron says “Daddy?”

2 Ron (allegedly) is well endowed

3 Ron doesn’t know what sex is and he never took sex ed.

4 Ron thinks he’s a virgin. 

5 Ron’s legs are jacked as fuck, and his pants are holographic.

6 Ron once tried to scare his enemies by using thaumaturgy to say “I’m not mad I’m just disappointed.” in his father’s voice, but just makes himself cry.

7 Ron said he loves his dad, but he’s not sure if he likes him. (“I don’t like my dad but I don’t wanna talk about that right now.”)

8 Ron plays the recorder (only hot cross buns)

9 We all know Ron is a surprisingly good singer (two-toned voice & all that)

10 Ron gets Terry Jr. Milk when he asks for a Cola ‘cause Rons dad always did that for him.

11 Terry Jr. is taller than Ron and he has “sandy blond” hair

12 Ron is Beths ”spawn”/ Beth is Ron's ”creator” canonically(?) she isn’t his mother but “She made him.” I assume this means she was someone influential in his life. They are considered “More than friends and less than lovers.” How canonical their interactions are is still kinda unsure, even though Beth helps them do several things. It’s just weird ok.

13 Ron said that his dad used to leave a lot and he missed him, and it made him feel bad. 

14 Ron always thought that if he could just catch a fish his dad would be proud of him. But he never caught a fish and his dad was never proud of him. He always thought that if Willy was really his dad he would have been proud of him no matter what. He then says that your family is whoever loves you. And feeling like you’re family is gone fucking sucks. Then he hugs Terry.

15 Ron claimed to not know/care what Darryl’s son Grant looked and sounded like.

16 At some point in episode 22, Ron said he’d never spent money and doesn’t know what things cost. “He’s one kid, what can he cost, 10$?” This is before they all bought some mercenaries. 

17 Ron cannot wear any pants due to a deal with scam likely, to combat this he wears holographic pants which aren’t technically real pants, just images of them.

18 Once again, Ron is “really sexy and well endowed” but also canonically has chiseled legs. His underwear says “cool guy” on them.

EP Review: Craig Craigstofferson - OTG

Craig Craigstofferson can accept he’s not as famous as Eminem, Stevie Nicks, Bob Dylan or the guy from Cracker.

But Jim Lauderdale?

Give him a break.

Craigstofferson - aka Huffamoose’s Craig Elkins - lays out his career frustrations on the four-song EP OTG, a collection of two previously released singles and two new cuts.

Full of tricky chords and running longer than four minutes - listen to the track, it’s important to know - “Jim Lauderdale Has Taken My Spot” finds Elkins/Craigstofferson lamenting his musical lot with typical self-deprecating lyrics and an atypical build to full band and orchestration as he sings:

Been wracking my brain trying to figure out how it is possible I’m not super-famous by now/Jim Lauderdale has taken my spot/Jim Lauderdale don’t got nothin’ I don’t got/Jim Lauderdale got some ‘splainin’ to do/Jim Lauderdale is keeping me away

The theme continues with “Same Old Person,” an acoustic-rooted song similar to the ’Moose’s “James,” that finds him recounting his decision to decamp to the West Coast while his bandmates remained in Philly. It didn’t go so well.

You’re still the same old person/with the same set of bullshit excuses/with a few less friends/and a lot more problems than you had before you moved/to the city that you thought would solve them, he sings in a forlorn baritone.

“Do I Tell You that I Love You Enough,” meanwhile, rips a page from David Crosby’s sheet music as the narrator sits in a dark house in the early morning writing the song - one of the new ones - and hoping his wife is OK with their life. It’s sparse, solo, acoustic and melancholy - like “Guinnevere” minus the harmonies.

Do I tell you that I love you enough/do I/can you find me in the jokes and the rage/can you/and even though it’s not what you thought it would be/are you happy/enough/to stay?

It’s a brilliant piece of songwriting brilliantly juxtaposed by the sprightly country steel guitar of “Hey Mother Fuckers,” which like “Lauderdale” features a one-two-ready-go count-in and ends the heavy OTG on a relatively light note.

There’s no denying Elkins/Craigstofferson and Huffamoose got rooked. They’re exceptional - check out the band’s self-titled debut and 2018’s ... and that's when the golf ball hit me in the head for evidence - but Elkins has thankfully kept his cynical humor intact. It continues to serve him, his music and his 16 monthly Spotify listeners (that’s literal) well.
