25 October 2024
Film: FAITH HUBLEY PROGRAM FOURTEEN (dir. John, Faith, and Emily Hubley, USA, various)
Forum: MoMA   Format: Digital and 16mm
Observations: We're in town for a long weekend in NYC to visit friends and to catch up on some cultural events. MoMA has been involved in a major restoration of Hubley films. This was the final program in the series, which included the provocative "Seers and Clowns" (dir. Faith Hubley, 1994), plus Emily Hubley's first (1980) and most recent (2024) shorts, and some fabulous home footage of the family clowing around on Long Island c. 1965-67.

Listed: Amy Rigby
Tumblr media
The singer-songwriter Amy Rigby got her start in the late 1980s and early 1990s in spry, New York-based country throwback groups Last Roundup and The Shams. Starting with 1996’s Diary of a Mod Housewife, Rigby has steadily released solo work that can break your heart with the contagious ache in her dry, distinctive voice or make you laugh out loud at the concussive put-downs she doles out. Rigby has a particular knack for turning the quotidian mythic and reminding us that the mythologized are ultimately just some guys. The music has remained rooted in country, but not confined by it. Hers is a guitar-forward style that can incorporate the bright highs of acoustic pop rock, crunchy roadhouse grooves, R&B, and even jazz. Alex Johnson, in his review of Rigby’s most recent release, Hang In There With Me, called the album “tough, witty rock and roll…[that] catalogs a lifetime of drags, uncertainties and disasters, but returns, again and again, to the people, moments and experiences that make it worthwhile, or bearable enough.”
Here are some things that Rigby has been listening to lately.
Warmduscher — “Eight Minute Machines”
Discovered via an online review of their Brooklyn show last year, one that made me want so badly to be sweating in a crowd with this band onstage.
Amelia White — “Get To The Show”
youtube
One of my Nashville pals and I love this track from her latest album. Amelia is always out working and rocking, written with the great Gwil Owen… Sometimes I really do miss Nashville!
Daniel Romano — “Impossible Green”
You know when you discover an artist and think wow, this kid’ll go far, then realize they’ve been at it for years, made tons of records, play all the instruments, write, sing and tour their ass off? That’s how it is for me with Daniel Romano. This track comes from his 2017 album Modern Pressure.
Gina Birch — I Play My Bass Loud
youtube
Gina’s debut solo album came out just a year ago — I’ve been a fan since hearing the Raincoats in the late 1970s and getting to see them live when they came to NYC back then. She’s one of my heroines for being an artist and uniquely herself in whatever it is she does — music, video, painting. The bass and her opening line: “Sometimes I wake up, and I wonder — what is my job?” Pure Gina/genius!
Wreckless Eric — Inside The Majestic
He’s my husband and labelmate so what the hell — this is from his most recent album Leisureland. People know Eric for his voice and lyrics and guitar, but this is an instrumental track that’s just glorious. I want to see the movie it soundtracks, or at very least a choreographed dance routine with Eric at the piano in a tuxedo.
Michele Stodardt — “These Bones”
youtube
A big attraction for me with the Magic Numbers was Michele Stodart’s bass playing and cool vocal contributions, love hearing and seeing her do her solo thing.
Meshell Ndgeocello — The Omnichord Real Book
youtube
For the last dozen years, I was bartending/selling books at a small shop in New York’s Hudson Valley. The first time Meshell came in I was tongue-tied, knowing her as a bass playing legend and poet, and thought if she lives here, it’s kind of the center of the universe, right? I really hope to see her play live sometime.
TBHQ — “Planet of Pain” from TBHQ
A radio host on a show I guested on was playing this great track when I walked in. “I really like that,” I thought, and then realized it was my daughter Hazel Rigby who records under the name TBHQ. She’s been performing and recording for years, often instrumental/noise but her voice and lyrics are so wise and honest.
Dory Previn — “The Comedian”
youtube
There’s never been anyone like Dory Previn, the pain and ridiculousness of being a human so acutely depicted in song. There’s a new documentary about her, On My Way To Where, by my friend Julia Greenberg with animated segments by Emily Hubley, just making its debut out there. She had a fascinating, fruitful, difficult beautifully productive life and I can’t wait to learn more about her.
Mary Timony — “Dominoes” from Untame The Tiger
Love everything about Mary Timony’s latest solo album Untame the Tiger — the songs, the guitar playing, her voice, the cover!
Swamp Dogg — “Synthetic World”
youtube
One of my favorite tracks of all time. Jerry Williams (Swamp Dogg) is still out bringing his music to the people. I’m looking forward to seeing the new documentary Swamp Dogg Gets His Pool Painted — there’s just nobody like this guy.

FINAL ANIMATION
I quite like how it turned out, I personally feel like I captured the essence of Emily Hubley's style as well as keeping true to my strengths and adding my own quirky-ness to it as well. After weeks of work, Im glad to say I am satisfied with how everything turned out, on to bigger things!

"I had a dream a long time ago, and it was a very scary dream..." --Georgia Hubley, Windy Day (1967)
I thought of this when I saw that post about kids being the best poets. These two amazing animators, Faith and John Hubley, recorded their daughters (Emily and Georgia) talking and playing, and then edited the recordings (I don't know howe much, but some) to be the dialogue of their short films.
youtube
"You can get married any time, except if you're a child. If you're a child, you can't get married." --Emily Hubley, Cockaboody (1973)
The second one, Cockaboody, is made from dialogue which had been recorded before the making of Windy Day, but hadn't been put with pictures until after. I love these films very much and they are very sweet. In conclusion, you should watch them.

Blu-ray Review: Species
Tumblr media
When scientists searching for extraterrestrial intelligence receive a transmission from outer space, they follow its instructions to splice alien DNA with human DNA. After mere months, the resultant science experiment gone wrong, codenamed Sil, resembles a 12-year-old girl (Michelle Williams, Blue Valentine). She possesses great strength and agility, which she utilizes to escape her isolated enclosure at the research facility. After a brief period in a cocoon, she transmogrifies into a beautiful woman of about 20 (Natasha Henstridge, Ghost of Mars) and finds herself in Los Angeles looking for a human with whom to copulate.
Meanwhile, Xavier Fitch (Ben Kingsley, Shutter Island), the government scientist who led the experiments, assembles a team of professionals to track Sil down. The ragtag crew come from various backgrounds: government mercenary Preston Lennox (Michael Madsen, Reservoir Dogs), empath Dan Smithson (Forest Whitaker, Arrival), anthropologist Dr. Stephen Arden (Alfred Molina, Spider-Man 2), and molecular biologist Dr. Laura Baker (Marg Helgenberger, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation).
Tumblr media
Dennis Feldman's (The Golden Child) script for 1995's Species rolls science fiction, action, and horror into one board package. It may not be a particularly strong showing for any of those genres individually, yet the combination therein proves to be a successful one. The film is a bit on the long side, clocking in at 108 minutes. A repetitive midsection continually finds the bounty hunters one step behind Sil, but it benefits from being bookended by an intriguing opening and a strong finale.
Thankfully, director Roger Donaldson (The Bank Job) embraces the B-movie concept with an A-level execution. Handsome cinematography by Andrzej Bartkowiak (Speed, The Devil's Advocate) and a resonant, orchestral score by Christopher Young (Hellraiser, The Exorcism of Emily Rose) help to sell it. Donaldson does not ignore the concept’s inherent camp completely, however; he allows, if not outright encourages, the actors - a fine collection of veterans and newcomers - to go just a tad over the top.
Tumblr media
Like her character, Henstridge is thrown into a new environment with her acting debut (receiving an "introducing" credit up front). She's lovely and frequently nude, but she also brings a sympathy to the monster. She's a victim, after all; a fish out of water acting on instincts and fighting for survival. Williams, a few years prior to her breakout on Dawson's Creek, plays Sil's earlier form. The young actress shows her chops by conveying emotion without dialogue.
Madsen, still hot off the success of Reservoir Dogs and Free Willy, seems to be in on the joke, playing the cocky leading man role with panache. Whitaker valiantly attempts to make an unnecessary character work, but he's one of the worst psychics in cinema history. He often states things that are obvious and/or not helpful, best exemplified by the scene in which he walks into a room with a dead body and profoundly notes, "Something bad happened here." Kingsley's well-documented talents are underutilized. Whip Hubley (Top Gun) pops up as a friendly local with whom Sil tries to mate.
Tumblr media
Going into production on the heels of Jurassic Park, Species was an early attempt at combining practical and digital special effects. The CGI may not have been bad for its time, but the video game-like graphics have not aged well, particularly when the alien assumes its final form at the conclusion. The gooey, practical creature and special makeup effects by Steve Johnson (Ghostbusters, The Abyss), on the other hand, are timeless. Johnson collaborated with influential artist H.R. Giger (Alien) on Sil’s design, which explains why she looks like a cousin to Alien’s Xenomorph.
Species looks better than ever with Scream Factory's new 4K scan of the inter-positive. The two-disc Collector's Edition Blu-ray release carries over two audio commentaries recorded back in 2004. The first, with Donaldson, Henstridge, and Madsen, is a casual chat among reunited friends. The second, featuring Donaldson, Johnson, visual effects supervisor Richard Edlund, and producer Frank Mancuso Jr. is more technical, but it features several long gaps of silence, particularly in the midsection when there aren't many effects to discuss.
Tumblr media
There's only one new special feature, but it's a good one. Afterbirth: The Evolution of Species is a 36-minute featurette with Donaldson, Bartkowiak, Young, Johnson, production designer John Muto, chrysalis supervisor Billy Bryan, and creature supervisor Norman Cabrera. The focus is largely on the copious special effects, including some good behind-the-scenes footage and photos. A solo interview with Henstridge is recycled from Scream Factory's 2016 release of Species II, but she spends a good chunk of it discussing the first film.
Archival extras are also ported over: The Making of Species: The Origin, The Concept, The Discovery, a 49-minute, three-part documentary detailing the production; Engineer Life, a scholarly examination of the science behind the film with actual scientists; H.R. Giger at Work offers a look at the enigmatic artist, including behind-the-scenes footage of him creating; Designing a Hybrid, dedicated to the special effects; an alternate ending, which would have added an unnecessary happy note to end on; the theatrical trailer; and three photo galleries (production design, creature design, and stills). There are some redundancies among the extras, but it's nice to have everything in one complete package.
Tumblr media
More than just the Giger connection, Species owes a great debt to Alien and Aliens. Its memorable finale leans heavily on those films, with the dank, winding sewers of Los Angeles taking the place of cavernous spaceship corridors as the group hunts down a maternal alien. A flamethrower and a one-liner suspiciously similar to Ripley's "Get away from her, you bitch!" are even employed. While Species lacks the impact of Alien or Aliens, mashing some of its highlights with a Dr. Frankenstein-like science angle, updated for a '90s audience, makes for an entertaining venture.
Species will be released on Blu-ray on July 11 via Scream Factory.

Pink Shirt Day 2017
Tumblr media
Pink shirt day for anti-bullying Today, it is not about writing. It is not about great and not so great books. It is about Amanda Todd, Rehteah Parsons, Sladjana Vidovic, Phoebe Prince, Tyler Clementi, Jamie Hubley, Audrie Pott, Kenneth Wisehuhn, Jadin Bell, Emilie Olsen, Nakia Venant, and the thousands of other kids and teens who were bullied to death. Today is not about generalized schoolyard…

Story Boards - Detailed Explanations.
Tumblr media
The animation starts with a single line, paying homage to Emily's simple yet captivating art style. It glides across the screen and then seems to form something.
Tumblr media
The line continues to form a man and a woman, these are Emily's parents, Faith and John Hubley, since there are not many characteristics that go into Emily's character in her own animations; I wanted to show that they're her parents through their hairstyles.
Tumblr media
A few colorful bubbles appear and this represents their creativity and artistic talents.
Tumblr media
As the water rises, parts of John and Faith Hubley's body start to turn into 4 fish representing their 4 children. Fish is a very frequent element in most of Emily's personal animations. She herself told me to use it if I thought it would be good for my animation.
Tumblr media
John and Faith then both disassemble into various shapes and then slowly float into nothingness, while the four fish (children) swim around for a while.
Tumblr media
The bubbles from earlier, go into these four fish, which represent John and Faith's creativity and talent being passed on to their children, two of whom are animators and one a musician. This sequence was shown because Emily's upbringing and childhood was a very important time in her life as most of her inspiration comes from back then. She values her parent's contribution to her artistic side as well as her siblings.
Tumblr media
the camera then focuses on the main character of the story, Emily.
Tumblr media
She slowly swims towards the top...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...but as she does, the camera rotates and flips her upside down, showing her jumping into the water rather than out of it, this is crucial to her depicting her life as this shows how she plunged into her creative side rather than being introduced to it, She herself said it took her 13 years to find the momentum in her art.
Tumblr media
She then swims through a sea of shapes in various colours, depicting her journey in finding herself and getting in touch with her creative side, at first exploring different styles which didn't suit her (thus the sharp shapes)
Tumblr media
But as she swims forward, she finds more organic and smooth shapes, this shows the evolution of her art style and how she grew as a person while finding herself and her style. She. got more comfortable with it and that's why it's more smooth and more organic.
Tumblr media
She then swims into a new scene, this time it's black and white, to show some of her other styles, some animations she done in black and white and I thought it would be wonderful to have this emotional scene in black and white.
Tumblr media
The fish opens up and falls to the ground, unravelling...
Tumblr media
the eyes of the fish slowly start to enlarge... (part of this is mainly because of Emily's surrealistic approach to transitioning from scene to scene. She deploys various methods that are abstract and unique to drive her narrative in an interesting and fun way.)
Tumblr media
This shows the emotional part of Emily's life where she lost her mother to cancer. Same here, using size and hairstyles I could give the character some features and make them seem like mother and daughter. Faith floats away as Emily tries to keep holding on, but she has to let go in the end.
Tumblr media
This is a learning moment for Emily, as she sheds tears for her mother. the black and white in the scene really depicts how I think she felt back then, being pulled from both sides.
Tumblr media
As one of the eyes is pushed away from the frame, the water starts to rise back up, back into colour.
Tumblr media
She is then again transformed back into a fish and still with colour. Shows that's shes healing from the experience and using it to her advantage to move on and become a better version of herself.
Tumblr media
She then swims along with those same shapes lining the edges of the road. She's still finding herself and still growing, becoming a better person each day.

She finds the same shapes since she's not done finding who she is and what her art is. She's still going on a journey and isn't done yet. The end screen slowly fills the screen signaling the end of the animation.
