Jeffrey Hirsch’s Remarks About “Premium Women,” “Outlander,” Shirtless Heroes, and “Counterpart”
Like many of my fellow Outlander fans, I had some strong reactions to reading the July 26th INTERVIEW with Starz COO Jeffrey Hirsch in The Hollywood Reporter. For what it’s worth, here are my two cents.
THE VALUE OF MARKETING SHOWS TO “PREMIUM WOMEN”
I’m going to start with the one somewhat positive take-away from this interview, which is that Jeffrey Hirsch and Starz seem to appreciate that slightly older (aged “24-54″) women can actually be a profitable demographic to target in television production. (Duh! 🙄) It’s good to know that Starz will keep promoting female-centric shows and that consequently, we may get more seasons of Outlander after season 6!
IT’S ONE THING TO PROMOTE FEMALE-CENTRIC SHOWS; IT’S ANOTHER TO UNDERSTAND WHAT ACTUALLY DRAWS “PREMIUM WOMEN” TO THOSE SHOWS
Although I’m glad that Jeffrey Hirsch appreciates how “premium women” can be a valuable demographic, I don’t think he really understands what women want in shows and why they are drawn to Outlander and the characters of Claire and Jamie Fraser in particular.
Mr. Hirsch’s stating that “women like it because she's a surgeon who goes back in time” seems to me like he is pandering to how he assumes women would want to view Claire--as simply a high powered career woman. In doing so he doesn’t do credit to the complexity of Claire’s character or the many reasons that women are drawn to Claire as a protagonist. Yes, Claire is a surgeon but as portrayed by the exceptional Caitriona Balfe, she is also a loving wife, mother and friend, as well as a woman who is determined to try to save Scotland from the horrors of Culloden and the tyranny that followed. Furthermore, she is a strong woman who is “out of time” no matter what century she is in, because sexism throughout the centuries does not create a receptive environment for an outspoken, intelligent, opinionated woman.
Then of course there’s this comment by Mr. Hirsch:
“there's some eye candy for that audience and people like when he has his shirt off”
Sadly, Mr. Hirsch seems to have little idea why many women find Sam Heughan’s portrayal of Jamie Fraser to be compelling. He doesn’t seem to realize that if Jamie’s character (and Sam’s nuanced portrayal) hadn’t resonated so strongly with many women, whether or not Jamie managed to get his shirt off would have been inconsequential to the show’s success. It is the character of Jamie and Sam’s multilayered acting that is appealing. The rest wouldn’t have held the female gaze long if there were no substance behind it.
Hopefully, Mr. Hirsch has surrounded himself with some female executives who might have a better idea of how to guide Starz in its attempt to appeal to “premium women” viewers.
COUNTERPOINT DIDN’T SUCCEED IN ATTRACTING SUFFICIENT VIEWERS BECAUSE STARZ DIDN’T PROVIDE ENOUGH “EXTRAS” TO SUPPLEMENT THE SHOW AND DRAW IN THE AUDIENCE
I want to just say how disappointed I was that Starz canceled Counterpoint. I loved that show. I don’t think it was too “complicated.” I do think Starz spent little money on advertising it. They also didn’t do a number of things that would have helped better draw in its audience.
For instance, they could have offered a commentary by the show’s writers and producers after each episode. This might have also made the show less confusing for viewers. They could have also promoted a website much like Outlander Community, which could have provided Counterpart scripts with commentary by the writers. These kinds of “extras” would have helped to build and keep the audience for Counterpart.
Finally, even though the show’s main “double” character Howard Silk was a man (played by the fabulous JK Simmons), two very complex female characters and their counterparts, Emily Burton Silk (Olivia Williams) and Clare Quayle (Nazanin Boniadi), kept me riveted and had me returning each week to see how their characters would evolve.
It’s too bad that Counterpart won’t continue. I would have loved to have found out how this dystopian double earth and the surviving characters would have fared, especially after the season 2 finale. It seems to me that Starz missed out on an opportunity to continue to have such an exceptional show among its original programming.

Conversation
Howard Silk: I love her, for everything she is, and for everything she isn’t. And in the end, that-that capacity for love, the ability to love someone unselfishly, is the only thing that will from me separate from you.

#counterpartedit#counterpart#emily burton silk#olivia williams#counterpart spoilers#as we get away from the exposition and unnecessarily enigmatic early parts I'm enjoying this a lot more#at one point I didn't even care about olivia williams's character(s)!#but quite liked her in the last ep and this#being all badass#the show definitely improves with more women but surprisingly I'm enjoying the switched howards too#especially how it's highlighting nice decent howard being the better version even if less useful#and even that's debatable since by his sheer honesty and niceness he's making inroads into other howard's problems

*アルファベット順です *今年リリース以外のものも多くあります *Vanessa Paradis、Marlene Dietrichは常時アイコンなのではぶきます * - My ‘sweetest’ Favorite 2019 - ▽▼▽ ALBUM / LP / EP ▽▼▽ AFK & Bludwork / Loyalty N Service [100% Silk] Akira Rabelais / CXVI [Boomkat Editions] Alexis Le-Tan & Jess present / Space Oddities [Permanent Vacation] Amazondotcom / Mirror River [SUBREAL] Ambien Baby / En Transito [FATi Records] Ana Roxanne / ~~~ [Leaving Records] Anna Homler / Deliquium In C [Präsens Editionen] Archie Shepp, Jasper Van't Hof / Mama Rose [SteepleChase] Bartosz Kruczynski, Poly Chain / Pulses [Into The Light Records] Basil Kirchin / I Start Counting [Trunk Records] Basil Kirchin / Primitive London [Trunk Records] Black Boboi / Agate [BINDIVIDUAL] C.Tappin / Ashes to Ashes [Melting Pot Music] Charlie Haden & Pat Metheny / Beyond The Missouri Sky [Verve Records] Chihei Hatakeyama(畠山地平) / Void XIX [White Paddy Mountain] Chocolate Lips / Chocolate Lips [Sony Music] Derric Gobourne Jr. / Supremacy [P-Vine Records] Deweekend / Deweekend [OutOfStock] Dome / Dome 2 [Editions Mego] Eberhard Weber / Encore [ECM Records] Eleventeen Eston / Delta Horizon [Growing Bin Records] Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou / Ethiopiques, Vol. 21 [Buda Musique] Eric Serra / Le Grand Bleu (Bande Originale Du Film) [Virgin] G.S. STARZ shared the key art and series overview video for new series Counterpart, starring Academy Award-winner J.K. Simmons. Get your first look here!
STARZ will debut their new Original series, Counterpart, on Sunday, January 21st, 2018 at 8:00pm ET|PT.
J.K. Simmons stars in two roles in this spy thriller, which takes us into a captivating world of espionage, intrigue, and government conspiracies.
The 10-episode first season introduces us to Howard Silk (J.K. Simmons) is a lowly cog in the bureaucratic machinery of a Berlin-based United Nations spy agency. When Howard discovers that his organization safeguards the secret of a crossing into a parallel dimension, he is thrust into a shadow world of intrigue, danger, and double cross… where the only man he can trust is his near-identical counterpart from this parallel world. The show explores themes of identity, fate and lost love, posing the eternal question, “what if our lives could have been different?”
Counterpart‘s first season is 10 episodes, and also stars Olivia Williams as Emily Burton Silk, Harry Lloyd as Peter Quayle, Nicholas Pinnock as Ian Shaw, Nazanin Boniadi as Clare, Sara Serraiocco as Baldwin, and Ulrich Thomsen as Aldrich. Academy Award-nominee Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game) directed the first episode.
