@emileesaurus​ sent: If you're looking for drabble requests, I would loooove to see you expand on that adorable "Louis watching Lestat nap" concept. It's so soft, I'm obsessed with it.

"Did you know you snore in your sleep?”

The low rumble of Louis’ voice in his chest feels like an all-consuming tidal wave. Like listening to the ocean in a seashell and realizing it’s only an echo of the blood in your ears, something that is at once both ethereal and rooted in the body. A slow, sleepy grin creeps its way across Lestat’s expression, growing wide until it collapses in on itself and he’s left squinting at the soft yellow reading light over Louis’ shoulder. 

“I do not. Liar.” His voice is heavy; it feels foreign in his throat. Even when he wakes from the death-sleep, he doesn’t feel this drowsy. It’s contagious— it must be—something in the air on these dreary rainy nights, passed on to him through Louis and his damned soft sweaters, and his lap which just so happens to be a lovely pillow for Lestat’s heavy head. 

Louis only smiles at the protest for a moment before flipping the page in his book with a contented sigh. “No,” he eventually concedes. “You do talk though.”

Out of the corner of his eye he watches as Lestat rubs at his eyes, wiggles his toes beneath the little throw blanket as if he’s forgotten how to inhabit his own clumsy body. He does one big stretch in his distinguished feline grace, before flopping back against Louis, curling up tight until his knees are tucked up and his face is pressed right up into Louis’ belly.

“Vampires don’t talk in their sleep.” Lestat mumbles into the threadbare angora sweater. It smells like their old flat, and makes him nauseous with homesickness for a moment. But the vibration of his voice makes Louis’ muscles tense in laughter, and he almost turns his head to catch the look on Louis’ face, but then one hand is on the back of his head, petting through his hair, and oh, that feels nice. 

“Not in the death sleep, no,” Louis combs his fingers through the roots of his mane, scratching gently at the scalp. “But you’re different when you nap.”

It takes a moment for Lestat to reply. With his face buried in the soft warmth of Louis’ stomach, it’s very hard to focus on anything other than the unmistakable scent of him, the soft thrumming of blood even beneath the endearing little layer of fat. He nuzzles his way beneath the hem of the sweater like a dog, burrowing until they’re pressed together finally, skin against skin.

“Different how?”

“Different, because you look alive when you nap. That is, when I can see you.” There’s a smile in his voice, a teasing tousle of Lestat’s hair to go along with it, and Lestat smiles right into his belly.

“I like to see you sleep this way. I never thought I would get to...” A coldness around the edge of his words, now, as he recalls the visits, the nights spent on the cold chapel floor, the hours of reading his beloved Shakespeare, playing his beloved Mozart, grappling desperately for some last scrap of The Vampire Lestat he once loved. 

Louis exhales a breath, lets the memory dissolve, and continues: 

“I think, to see you sleep like this, unguarded, is the closest I will ever come to knowing you as a mortal. I count your breath, the rise and fall of your chest, the way your hair falls in your eyes, and I think this is what you must have looked like when you took your rest by the fire with your great beastly dogs. And when you speak in your sleep— which you do, by the way, I was not lying— it is always strange words in that strange accent you once had when you first came to the colonies. Auvergnat. The death sleep to me seems more akin to some form of stasis— a suspension of time and consciousness. But the human sleep is the opposite. It reverts us to our purest selves, clings to those fading embers of mortal consciousness that are buried within us. When I watch you sleep, I think perhaps I am getting to know you more deeply than ever before, and for that I feel grateful, and I feel more painfully in love than I ever have been before.”

A pause. 

“Lestat?”

Louis looks down, moves his rumpled sweater to the side. 

Lestat is already asleep again.

Summary: Set during the IWTV-era, Armand is pressured to choose between the vampire he has long desired for nearly a hundred years, and the fledgling of that same vampire - alluring in his inquisitive nature and tenderness. Time is running out for Armand to make his choice, while Lestat, who is at his mercy, is being held in a cell in the bowels of the Theatre des Vampires - also desperate to salvage what he can of what he once had.

Lestat takes Louis to Auvergne to explore his old family home, and the soft angst combined with gentle sweet Loustat makes for a beautiful, haunting, but ultimately healing atmosphere. it has some gorgeous vulnerable Lestat, who is able to, for once, be honest and open with Louis. take a look at this if, like me, you are still a happy-ending-post-trilogy-Loustat truther ✊ a lovely little read that'll hit you right in the kokoro in all the best ways

Hi! Show-fan just here to say that I adore your writing! Your fics & blog were my first entry point into book fandom - along with great works by other like nasnyys, emileesaurus, sofipitch, immortal_conclusions & more that I'm discovering. BEGIN AGAIN is one of the most masterful fanworks I've come across. Wanted to let you know there are intense show fans (I'm quite active in the IWTV fandom) who really resonate with your analysis & creations in this book fandom sector. In fact, I vastly prefer book fic to show fic. You get some divergent vibes between the two, particularly around Loustat's dynamic ofc - it's honestly fascinating. I sometimes feel like an astronaut, moving between disparate VC fandom planets with alien lifeforms, needing to decompress & sterilize between trips because the ecosystems are so notably different. I have a cherished hope that someday certain book vs. show characterizations will gel more smoothly. (And more of the fandom can mingle peaceably as a result.) But for now I greatly enjoy my visits here. So thank you, I feel really lucky to read your thoughtful metas & fics! (Sorry this isn't a real question. I'll form up a proper Q someday. The topics on my mind are things you've addressed frequently like disagreeing with AR's move towards hyper-masculinizing Lestat in later books (SAME) & whether the show might ever work for you again (your criticisms are understandable & substantive). Just wanted to thank you for creating such accomplished & insightful writing. <3

I can imagine the vibes overall are different, the two universes diverged extremely quickly and the fandoms seemed to have followed suit. It's really nice to have people bridging the gap (I wish I could have stayed one of them) and it makes me so so happy to know that I got to introduce you to the books (even without knowing)! In spirit I'm talking at you about VC lore in the car and there's no escape.

You are so right, anon. There were many of us who were concerned when this show was still in pre-pro and as more promotional material (interviews, etc) came out and as the actual show wore on, it proved itself to be super fucking scummy.

I wish I could say I was shocked that they were trying to carry on during a writer's strike but A) @emileesaurus has already pointed out their unethical writing practices pre-strike and B) Rolin Jones has proven himself to be an egotistical, hamfisted asshole. So like. Gross, but not shocking.

They were in public, surrounded by mortals, but Lestat loomed so large in Louis's vision that none of it seemed truly real. "Would you be there with me if it was?" 1999. After months on the run from the Talamasca, Louis just wants to spend Christmas in New Orleans with Lestat. Will either of them ever manage to say what they actually mean? Featuring religious imagery and a trip to Montgomery Ward.

more book!loustat??? I'm spoiling you guys I know. I rarely read anything set so late in the series, but I'm particularly biased towards the author, and I wound up really enjoying how the general... deeply-fucked-up-ness of what happened in Merrick added to the depth of the Loustat relationship in this. with Y2K looming, the dead disasters spend the holiday season swimming through the tides of gross consumerism and find themselves in an unexpectedly tender moment in a church. gorgeous characterisation, managing to balance that sweet sweet emotional vulnerability with the realism of how messed up these two boys are. fully recommend.

These are films/TV I love and love recommending to others, and if you like one or more of them, chances are we’ll get along ✨ In no particular order (other than wanting IWTV in the middle):

Only Lovers Left Alive - Tom Hiddleston is a Nicki/Louis hybrid, I love him, I love the dynamic between him and the other vampires, I kinda love how fragile these vampires are, and they have unique gifts. Very slice of life.

What We Do in the Shadows - also love the TV series, but if I had to choose?? IDK I NEED BOTH but only giving it one slot, so the original takes precedence, I love Vladislav. 

Jennifer’s Body - UNF I love this. I don’t love the official posters, but I really like this VHS fanwork by CratereanDesigns on Etsy.

Let the Right One In - the 2008 original!

Interview with the Vampire, of course. And I do not think it’s the Best Movie of All Time, it’s just one of my personal faves and a comfort food for me 💗

30 Days of Night - the delicious ANGST, ah my heart. I don’t love the poster, oh well. 

Good Omens - I didn’t read the book so if it’s unfaithful in any way, doesn’t bother me! I loved this series, psyched for season 2.

Better Call Saul - I know, not a film. I love it too much, and if GO is on here, then TV can be on here. 

And here I end with the impossible choice of favorite animated movie, and there are a LOT of them, but I have to choose one! What’s more important, beauty, story, music? Beauty and the Beast (1991) still holds up, after all these years. It might not be as technically proficient as Wall-E (another fave of mine) but it’s well acted, strong story, good soundtrack. I think what I love most is the bantering and courtship of Belle and the Beast, it’s so genuine and earned. IDK, call me a baby, I love it.
