“U.S. Ignores Petain: WARSHIPS ARE 'IMMOBILIZED' AT MARTINIQUE,” Vancouver Province. May 14, 1942. Page 1. ---- French "Refuse to Turn Over Merchantmen In Port." ==== REPORTS VARY --- WASHINGTON, May 14. (AP) French warships at Martinique are being immobilized, it was authoritatively disclosed today.
The immobilization is being carried out in co-operation between French and American and other officials on the spot.
Other important details of a comprehensive solution of the problem of French possessions in the Caribbean are still being discussed, it was said.
VICHY IGNORED. Responsible sources emphasized that these negotiations are being carried on directly with Admiral Georges Robert, French high commissioner on Martinique, and that the United States is not in any sense dealing with or looking to the Vichy government in this matter.
Warships affected by the immobilization agreement include, it is understood, the aircraft carrier Bearn, and the cruisers Emile Bertin and Jeanne D'Arc.
(By Associated Press.) BERNE, Switzerland, May 14. - The Vichy government was reported today to have advised the United States it is ready to immobilize for duration of the war French warships now stationed at Martinique, but that it could not hand over to the United States merchant ships berthed there.
This course of action had been suggested yesterday by the Paris press, and the reported Vichy stand was regarded as an attempt to compromise on demands on Martinique said to have been submitted by the United States.
SHIPS NAMED. The French warships now stationed at Martinque included the aircraft carrier Bearn and the cruisers Emile Bertin and Jeanne d'Arc.
The Berlin radio broadcast yesterday a Vichy despatch saying the United States had demanded immobilization of these warships and had asked that Vichy surrender a number of merchant ships now in Caribbean ports.
This request, the broadcast said, would be opposed by the Vichy government as contrary to the terms of the armistice with Germany.
The London Daily Mail said today Germany had flatly forbidden Vichy to surrender the merchant ships and had given orders to scuttle them if necessary. The paper estimated there are "140,000 tons of merchant shipping in Martinique harbor.”

Dussane. R. Berendt. Garcia. The address is given: 224 Boulevard Raspail
In the dialogue François Bernouard says that the LES AMIS de 1914 were born of out of necessity, for writers but also architects, painters, sculptors, musicians to defend lyricism in the aftermath of war: “The war and its multiple consequences had separated us. Each one like you, worked isolated, we knew each other only by our writings and certain old comrades had not seen each other for twenty years. Here are some reasons for the continued success of our evenings”
The first meeting took place on 17 February 1933. “The invitation was issued on behalf of Paul Fort, Prince des Poëtes, André Salmon, Jacques Dyssord, André Warnod, André Lebey, and me. It was a wonderful evening, despite the freezing cold; more than 600 artists and art lovers came, the elite of Paris”. On night Paul Fort declared: “Retrouvons-nous chaque vendredi et soyons les inséparables de 1914, nos cadets seront reçus comme nos enfants”
For those who survived the war, LES AMIS de 1914 was to be a place to meet to discuss art with the peaceful spirit (l'esprit pacifique) of the days which preceded the catastrophe of 1914
But they were too sensitive to those no longer present: “Our friendship should remember the dead, either before, during or after the war, and try to redress a little the injustice of fate towards those who will remain in the eternal time of the young. I cannot cite them all. These were the memories of Guillaume Apollinaire, Henri Bouvelet, Emile Despax, the Englishman Rupert Brooke, Fagus, Jehan Rictus, Charles Derennes, Joachim Gasquet, Paul Drouot, Alfred Jarry, Jean Jareas, Jean Moreas, Paul Napoleon Roinard, René Dalize, Raymond Radiguet, Jean Le Roy, Stuart Merrill, Charles de Fontenay, Jean de la Ville de Mirmont, Sanche de Gramont, Robert d'Humières, Amédée Prouvost, John-Antoine Nau, Odilon-Jean Périer, Auguste Angellier, Adrien Bertrand, André Dupont, Albert Samain, Gabriel-Tristan Franconi, Ricciotto Canudo who, born Italian, chooses the French language to express himself, all writers of first quality. The present is often unfair to them, but posterity will do them justice”
Questions of generation also come up; alongside the slippage of the category of ‘friendship’ into something militaristic (just as from German “comrade” can slip from Genossen to Kamerad and Freund/in can denote both a platonic and a non-platonic relationship)

Cameroon 1990 World Cup heroes receive 30-year-old gift
Players of Cameroon National football team at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy have received the keys to the houses promised by the Head of State Paul Biya in a ceremony at the Yaoundé Multi-Purpose Sports Complex.
The recognition is a reward for their exploits during the global showpiece when they became the first African Nation to reach the quarter-finals.
The run-in during that tournament included three wins and two defeats against the Soviet Union and England in the quarterfinal – while the major highlight was the Indomitable Lions edging defending champions Argentina in the tournament opener at San Siro with François Omam- Biyik netting the only goal from a superb header.
Three members of that historic 22-man squad are dead: Benjamin Massing, Louis-Paul Mfede and recently emblematic captain Stephen Eta Tataw and their families were entitled to receive the keys after presenting backup documents.
Other iconic players like Roger Milla, Joseph Antoine Bell, Thomas Libih, Ndip Akem, Bertin Ebwelle, and Jules Denis Onana graced the event with their presence.
Meanwhile, Thomas N’kono, Jacque Songo’o, Emmanuel Kunde, Roger Feutmba, Jean-Claude Pagal, Cyrille Makanaky, and Emile Mbouh were absent from the ceremony.
The Minister of Housing of Urban Development Celestine Keutcha Courtes disclosed that seven of the beneficiaries have chosen their homes in Douala while the remaining fifteen have opted for the Yaoundé site at Olembe.
These structures will be added to accompanying facilities for the comfort of the veteran players who propelled the Central African Nation to the acme of World football.
Former Indomitable Lions goalkeeper, Joseph Antoine Bell told African Football HQ the gift can’t be qualified as a dream come true.
“It is exactly the wrong way to say it. It is not a dream come true because we were not dreaming for thirty years. For myself, I was not dreaming for thirty years. It was something that was said 30 years ago then for a week or two you will be waiting for it to materialize and then you think they never said it,” the former shot-stopper revealed.
Although there have been mixed feelings concerning the houses offered in term of quality, Ndip Akem member of the legendary squad has appreciated the move and insisted the opinions of others doesn’t change his stance.
“The head of state decided to give us the house after 30-years. Whether others are satisfied or not, I am satisfied because it is a house. I am really happy and I want to thank the President for that,” Ndip enthused.

Can Italia 1990 success Pave a new path for the Lions?
Cameroon Minister of Sport and Physical Education Prof Narcisse Mouelle Kombi believes the Lions 1990 World Cup triumph can inspire the current crop of players to replicate the achievement as the country gears up to stage two continental competitions; The African Nations Cup (AFCON) in 2022 and the African Nations Championship (CHAN) next year.
“We wish that a new generation both present and future inspire themselves from your examples to excel at a continental and global stage,” Kombi said at the recent unveiling.
The five-time African champions have not made remarkable strides at the FIFA World Cup since they participated in 1990, although there’s been much to write home about at the African Cup of Nations with the Lions being the second most successful nation in Africa.
To repeat similar achievements at the CHAN and AFCON, players who must be disciplined and hardworking, suggests Ndip.
“A lot of this young player for instance, after training they go to night clubs or the bars, we did not have time to go to night clubs or bars,” the 53-year-old explained.
“I can tell you it’s been 18 years I have not touched alcohol nor went to night clubs. Can you imagine me staying for 18 years without going to clubs or drinking beer?
“[These] days our young stars immediately they leave the field to the night clubs or bars drinking beer which abstains them from sleep and to prepare your self for tomorrow which is a very difficult task.
“They need to be self-disciplined and be respectful [to the craft].
