The Trolley Problem, Part 77
Hopper gets to deal with the decisions he made before they went through the gate.
(master post)(also posting to ao3)
When they got back to the lab and through the gate, things started to happen quickly again. There weren’t many guards left at the lab, and the ones that were there were too shocked to see them come out alive to stop them. Hopper saw that Joyce and Will had made it the rest of the way. He’d left them by the gate, and now they were wearing fresh clothes, clearly having gone through decontamination.
One of the guards took over giving orders. He said that they weren’t equipped to handle Eddie’s injuries there. They piled into a van to rush him to the hospital, rather than wait for an ambulance.
The drive over was tense. Hopper sat in the passenger seat with that one guard driving. He recognized him as a local, though he couldn’t remember his name. Steve recognized him, too. They didn’t say anything to each other, though. Steve was in the back of the van with Wayne, trying to keep Eddie comfortable.
Joyce and Will sat in the middle seats. Joyce kept her arms around Will the whole time, but she leaned forward to ask questions. “Where the hell did everyone go?”
Hopper stared out at the road. He knew where they’d gone. He’d made the deal with the lead scientist to give them their best shot at getting her boy back, but he was having second thoughts.
The guard frowned and kept his eyes on the road. “They got a lead on whatever they were looking for,” he said. “Cleared out. Haven’t checked in.”
It was Will who put it together first. “El,” he said quietly. “They were looking for El.”
Joyce’s jaw dropped. “But they couldn’t...” She glanced over at the guard, and then at Hopper. She made the leap to the right conclusion faster than he would’ve thought possible. “Hop. What did you do?”
Hopper clenched his jaw. “What I had to, to get us through there.” At the intense silence behind him, he turned around to look at the people in the back of the van. “They weren’t going to let us through, Joyce. I made a deal so we could go and get your kid back. You and Wayne’s.”
Will looked back and forth between his mom and Hopper, and then turned around in his seat to look at the rest of them. Joyce had a hard glare on her face. “Hop,” she hissed. “Hop, you didn’t tell them. Tell me that you didn’t tell them.”
“I told them what I had to,” he said.
“But the kids, Hop. All the kids are there with her.”
“They’re not gonna hurt those kids,” Hopper said. It sounded ridiculous to say that they’d promised, but he’d made them promise not to hurt the rest of the kids when he’d told them where El was. “They’ve got a bunch of trained soldiers, Joyce. They know how to manage a few teenagers.”
It was Steve who snapped next. Hopper hadn’t even been sure he’d been listening. “Are you fucking kidding me?” he yelled. “Tommy’s going to go apeshit on those guys. They’ll fucking shoot him.”
The driver swerved a little, and Hopper braced himself against the seat. “Tommy?” he asked. “Tommy Hagan’s there? But if he’s there—”
“Yeah, Mr. Perkins. Carol’s there, too.” Steve kept glaring at Hopper.
“You told me she was safe!”
“She was safe!” Steve’s voice took on a high pitch. “Until this asshole sent your boss after her.”
Wayne reached out and put his hand on Steve’s shoulder, forcing him to sit back down. He didn’t say anything. Joyce didn’t say anything, either. Steve was still breathing heavily enough that they could hear it through the van, but nothing else broke the silence. Perkins kept driving, mindful of the injured boy in the very back, and they made it to the hospital in one piece.
The emergency room was a madhouse. Multiple ambulances were coming in, and Hopper found Powell directing people. He went over to him to find out what had happened.
“Damn good to see you here, Chief,” Powell said. “Something happened at the middle school. Bunch of lab folks there said they tracked that cougar, or whatever it was, through the woods and to the school, of all the damn things. Chief, there were kids there.”
Hopper ran his hand over his face. “Shit. What are we looking at?”
“A lot of injuries, but mostly the adults. The kids managed to make it to a phone and call us in. One girl got caught in the crossfire. She’s in surgery now. There’s... Well, the lab had...” He lowered his voice and they stepped off to the side, away from the crowd in the waiting room. “Chief, something doesn’t smell right about this. The lab folks had a bunch of people pulling rank. Said something about the Department of Energy? They said they killed the thing, but they won’t let any of our guys in to see it. They just kept bringing out injured soldiers.”
“Aw, hell,” Hopper said. “This is gonna be a shit show, huh?”
“That’s what I was thinking.” He smirked. “I’m real glad to see you, Chief. Means you get to deal with it instead of me.”
Hopper gave him a scathing look, but Powell wasn’t fazed at all. “Thanks, Calvin. I’m looking forward to it.”
“Where’ve you been, anyway?”
He jerked his thumb at the rest of the group as the paramedics brought Eddie in on a stretcher. Wayne and Steve followed after him, and Will and Joyce behind them. Steve looked like he was about to fall over. Perkins came in last, looking dazed at the whole mess. He went over to the check-in desk to ask them something, probably about his daughter.
“Holy shit,” Powell said. “You found them? Byers and Harrington and... Hasn’t the Munson kid been missing since Monday?”
“Yeah.” He wiped his hand over his face. “It, uh. It’s a long story.”
“You’ll be a hero for this, Chief.”
“No,” Hopper said sternly. “Don’t say that. Too many people died. Too many got hurt.” He looked at Perkins again. It didn’t look like anyone was giving him answers. “That girl at the school who got shot. You know her name?”
“Uh, Carol Perkins.” Powell hooked his thumbs on his belt. “The kids that were with her are all up on the second floor, waiting for her to get out of surgery. I sent a car out to find her parents.”
“That’s her pop there,” Hopper said, gesturing at the desk with his chin. “I’ll tell him.”
And he did, though Perkins looked like he wanted to strangle him when he understood what had happened. He managed to hold himself back from shouting at Hopper in the crowded waiting room, but it was a close thing. Joyce took him away and led the way up to the second floor, with Will at her side. The doctors that had taken Eddie back also let Wayne through with him. Of their whole group, it was just Hopper and Steve still there.
Steve looked right through him, staring instead at the double doors that Eddie had been wheeled through. He clutched at his sides, and his face and hair were still filthy with dirt from the Upside Down.
“Hey,” Hopper said, patting him on the arm and trying to get him to focus. “Will’s alive. Munson’s alive. You did it, kid.”
He blinked a couple of times and focused on Hopper. “They’re alive,” he said. “Yeah.”
“You should go up to see the other kids. Or, hell, get someone to look you over. You look like you’re in shock.”
“I’m fine,” he said automatically. “I’m not hurt.”
He braced Steve in place with both arms, trying to get him to focus. “Yeah, but kid—”
“I’m not a kid,” Steve said, shrugging him off. “I don’t care what I look like, I’m not. I know what happens next, remember?”
“Okay, Harrington, but I heard from Powell. The lab took care of the... the thing in the woods. The wild animal.” He kept his voice low, glancing around at the people who might be in hearing range. “You’ve got to calm down. We rescued the ones that we could. It’s over.”
The kid got a hard glare in his eyes and lowered his voice to a whisper. “Don’t trust what the lab tells you,” he said. “It’s never over. It always comes back.”
Hopper furrowed his brow. “Okay. Maybe you’re right. But you need to take a breath. It’s gone for now. That’s what matters.”
Steve pressed his fingers to his temples and shut his eyes. “Yeah. Yeah, okay, Hop. It’s gone for now. But Eddie’s still hurt. Carol got shot. I don’t know what else happened to everyone.”
“Then go upstairs and find the ones that are here,” Hopper said, clapping him on the shoulder. “I’ll go make some phone calls and find out where everyone else is.”
Steve let out a long breath and wiped his hands over his face. “Fine,” he said. His face settled into a look like he’d made a decision. “Hopper. Don’t listen to what the lab tells you. I don’t know what they told you before, but they’re full of shit. They don’t have as much power here as they think they did.” He lowered his voice to a whisper and said, “The gate is still open.”
Hopper grimaced and nodded. He gave the boy another pat on the back and a gentle shove towards the elevators. Then, he headed outside to have a smoke.
A black car pulled off while he was standing off to the side with his cigarette. He knew what it meant, and as much as Steve had warned him, he still had to pick his battles. He got into the car to talk to the people from the government about what happened next.

In the early hours of March 22, Russian forces launched what Ukraine’s energy minister called the “largest attack” on Ukrainian infrastructure in recent times. Numerous critical infrastructure facilities across the country, including the Dnipro Dam, have been hit, and many places are without power or are under rolling blackouts to reduce demand on damaged systems. Additionally, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant was briefly disconnected from the grid during the strikes, posing a risk of shutdown. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the attack a direct “war against ordinary people’s lives.”
Air raid sirens sounded throughout Ukraine early Friday as the Russian military launched massive missile strikes across the country. Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko called the strikes “the most extensive attack on Ukrainian energy infrastructure in recent times,” saying they were aimed at “causing a large-scale breakdown of the nation’s energy system.” Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, the head of Ukraine’s high-voltage transmission operator Ukrenergo, concurred, saying the attack was the largest of its kind since the start of the full-scale war.
According to Halushchenko, power generation facilities as well as transmission and distribution systems in various regions were hit and damaged. Many places are without power.
The city of Kharkiv has been left almost entirely without electricity or running water following Russian strikes on over 15 energy infrastructure targets in the area, reported Governor Oleh Syniehubov.
Russia launched 12 missiles on Zaporizhzhia, said regional Governor Ivan Fedorov. According to preliminary information, at least one person was killed and eight people were injured. Fedorov later reported that two more people are missing. At least seven residential buildings in the area were destroyed and 35 were damaged.
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, currently under Russian control, was also on the verge of shutdown. During the attack, the overhead power line connecting the occupied plant to Ukraine’s power grid was disconnected.
Drone and missile strikes also damaged critical infrastructure in Kryvyi Rih, said Mayor Oleksandr Vilkul. The city is implementing emergency shutdown schedules and hospitals and other critical facilities are switching to generator power where possible.
Pro-Kremlin Telegram channels reported a strike on the Dnipro Dam, a hydroelectric power plant. Petro Andryushchenko, an aide to Mariupol’s legitimate mayor, said a Russian missile hit a trolley traveling along the dam. According to him, the vehicle was filled with civilians who were commuting to work.
The Ukrainian energy company Ukrhydroenergo wrote that a fire broke out at the station but that the situation is under control and there is “no threat of breach.”
Ukrhydroenergo’s CEO, Ihor Syrota, told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty that the Russian military hit the station’s Hydroelectric Power Plant 1 and Hydroelectric Power Plant 2 (HPP-1 and HPP-2). According to him, HPP-2 was severely damaged and may be beyond repair. One of the station’s supports was also hit, and crane beams were broken. “We’ll have to completely restore the machine room and electrical equipment,” Syrota said. “We’ll assess the consequences within the day and take stock of what happened.”
Authorities in Ukraine’s Sumy region have introduced a schedule of emergency blackouts to cope with damage from strikes on energy infrastructure. Russia’s attacks also reportedly damaged critical energy infrastructure in Ukraine’s Vinnytsia, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Mykolaiv, and Odesa regions.
Khmelnytskyi Mayor Oleksandr Symchyshyn wrote that there were dead and wounded after Russian strikes hit infrastructure facilities and homes in the city. Ukraine’s Internal Affairs Ministry confirmed the deaths of two people in Khmelnytskyi.
Missile debris fell on homes in Ukraine’s Poltava region, and rolling blackouts have been implemented in the area. Local authorities have also introduced blackouts in the Kirovohrad region to reduce the strain on the energy grid.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia launched over 60 drones and around 90 missiles in the attack. Commenting on the strikes, Zelensky wrote that they were clear evidence of Russia’s intent to harm Ukrainian civilians:
Russia is waging war against ordinary people’s lives. […] Russian missiles don’t have delays like aid packages to our nation do. Shahed [drones] have no indecision like some politicians. It’s important to understand the cost of delays and postponed decisions. Patriot systems should be protecting Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia; we need air defense systems to protect people, infrastructure, homes, and dams. Our partners know exactly what’s needed. They can certainly provide support. These decisions are necessary. Life must be protected from these Moscow barbarians.

50 (punctual) for the twine boys
One Word Writing Prompts (still accepting)
The sky overhead turns glorious shades of orange and violet, which Thaffe recognizes - through some soul-deep memory, dimly recalled - as a sunset. He pauses in his work, gazing skyward. It sets his heart to racing: sunset means night, the unfamiliar blanket of darkness which had settled over Amh Araeng only yesterday, after over a hundred years of Light. It had emerged wholecloth the night before, after the slaying of the Lightwarden, but tonight...
Tonight he'll get to watch night fall properly.
Or perhaps not, he thinks, catching sight of Jeryk dashing toward the trolley tracks as quickly as his legs will carry him. What is he up to? It wouldn't be the first time the man's worked through the late hours on some project or other... but that was when there was always ample light to be had. With night, true night, falling soon, there's no telling what trouble Jeryk might get himself into.
And he's been acting odd since they'd gotten the Talos up and moving again. Thaffe doesn't know what's gotten into him, but it doesn't seem wise to leave him unattended for long.
He glances at the sky again, then sighs. Dammit, Jeryk.
The shadows are already deepening as he sets off down the tracks; he keeps his eyes on his feet, careful not to misstep in the unfamiliar darkness. He recalls Jeryk's breakneck sprint and grits his teeth - he'd be a lot more worried about it if Jeryk hadn't been dashing across the tracks, heedless of the risk of falling or snapping a leg, since he could walk. He expects the regular pattern of the ties comes as naturally to Jeryk as flight comes to a bird.
"There you are," he says, nearly bumping into the smaller hume in his concentration; Jeryk spares him half a glance. "What are you-"
"It should just about be time," Jeryk says, gazing up... not at the sky, like any normal person, but at one of the lanterns hanging alongside the tracks.
Thaffe blinks at it, as though he'd forgotten the things existed - for all they've been keeping the tracks and equipment in something like working order these past few years, he hadn't thought to consider the lanterns. Who would? Who had need of lanterns in a world drowning in Light? In times long past, he supposes, many of the miners of Twine would have headed home from the mines either in the dark hours of the morning or just after sundown, and they'd have welcomed the lights along the tracks leading the way home...
True darkness settles over them, broken only by the stars overhead. Beside him, Thaffe hears Jeryk draw in a breath and hold it.
The lantern flickers.
And lights.
All along the track, the old lanterns blaze to life, a lifeline between Twine and the mines.
Jeryk lets out the breath in a cheer, practically applauding; Thaffe reaches a hand out to steady him, resting a hand against Jeryk's back - but his own heart leaps in unexpected celebration, kindled alongside that little lantern.
It's a little piece of Twine, back from the dead.
"Right on time," Jeryk says, smacking the lantern post almost affectionately. "Just like they did before the Flood!"
"You've been repairing them," Thaffe guesses, marveling. "How did you even think to start?"
"When night came to Lakeland." Still gazing up at the lantern, Jeryk leans into him, and Thaffe welcomes it, winding an arm around the shorter man's shoulders. The night comes with the same chill as ever, and Jeryk's excitement gives off a warmth all its own. "I thought... wouldn't it be something if the Warrior of Darkness made their way here, too?"
He hadn't dared hope. A lot of things have happened in the past couple of days that Thaffe hadn't dared hope for.
"Good thinking." He gives Jeryk a little squeeze. "And now I won't have to fear breaking my neck chasing after you down the tracks at night."
Unrepentant, Jeryk grins, pecking Thaffe on the cheek with an unapologetic kiss. "I wanted to make sure the lanterns lit on time, that's all. We can run the trolley at night! What's more exciting than a trolley ride under the stars-"
"Some other time." Thaffe steers Jeryk homeward. "I've had enough excitement for a few days."

"You need to fix the structural root of the problem" is both true and completely missing the point of the problem.
Ideally nobody would be loitering on / tied to the trolley tracks.
Ideally the trolley would be equipped with emergency brakes that could stop it in time.
Ideally, absent those, there would still be some way to save everybody.
The problem is that isn't always the case. There are people on the tracks. The trolley's emergency brake is broken. Multi-track drifting might kill the people on the trolley with you in addition to whoever it hits. And nothing you can do to make sure this never happens again will be done in time to stop this instance.
Fixing the trolley's brakes (or the platform's sight-lines) so you can stop in time will save future lives.
Adding warning signs so people stay off the tracks will save future lives.
Tracking down the person tying people to the railroad tracks with save future lives.
But the entire point of the problem is that those measures proved insufficient and there are people on the tracks now who can't be saved by fixing the brakes tomorrow.
"How can we make sure we never have to choose again?" is a valuable question! But it's an invalid answer to the trolley problem itself.

Hospitals and clinics are fast-paced spaces with constant activity. Unlike commercial buildings, hospital elevators must be ready to operate around the clock, handling high usage and transporting both people and heavy medical tools. IEE Lifts understands this need and builds hospital elevators that are not only durable but also equipped for smooth, quiet, and reliable performance throughout the day. Each lift is constructed using high-strength materials, high-performance motors, and advanced control systems. The design ensures that every ride—whether it’s a patient on a stretcher or a nurse with emergency equipment—is steady and secure.
Comfort and Accessibility Matter
IEE Lifts places a strong emphasis on user comfort, especially for patients who may be unwell, elderly, or physically challenged. Their hospital lifts are designed to reduce noise, vibration, and jerky movements, offering a calm and comfortable experience for patients and staff alike.
Accessibility features like automatic doors, voice commands, braille buttons, and easy-to-use controls make these elevators more user-friendly for everyone. Wide doors and spacious cabins ensure that stretchers, wheelchairs, and medical trolleys can be moved without any hassle.
Hygiene and Cleanliness at the Core
Hospitals demand the highest levels of hygiene. IEE Lifts takes this seriously by using easy-to-clean materials in the lift interiors, such as stainless steel and anti-bacterial surfaces. Proper ventilation systems are included to maintain fresh air circulation and reduce the risk of germs spreading.
This makes the lifts not just convenient, but also safe for use in sensitive areas like ICUs, operating rooms, and maternity wards.
Tailored to Your Space
Every hospital or clinic is different. Some may need compact lifts for smaller buildings, while others require high-capacity elevators for multi-story hospitals. That’s why IEE Lifts offers fully customized hospital lift solutions.
You can choose from various designs, load capacities, interior finishes, door types, and operational features. Whether you need a lift that blends with your building's design or one that prioritizes functionality, IEE Lifts works with you to deliver a solution that fits your space perfectly.

Energy-Efficient and Cost-Effective
In today’s world, energy efficiency is a key concern for any facility. IEE Lifts integrates energy-saving technologies in their hospital lifts, helping reduce power consumption without affecting performance. Features like LED lighting, efficient traction systems, and standby modes help healthcare facilities lower their operational costs in the long run. This focus on sustainability is especially valuable for large hospitals where lifts run constantly, and every bit of energy savings can make a difference.
Reliable Support and Maintenance
The job doesn’t end after installation. IEE Lifts provides dependable after-sales service, including routine maintenance, quick repairs, and safety checks. Their team of trained professionals ensures that every elevator stays in top condition, minimizing downtime and keeping things running smoothly.
In a hospital setting, where delays can impact lives, having a lift partner who responds quickly and efficiently is a major advantage.
Trusted by the Healthcare Industry
IEE Lifts has built a strong reputation in Mohali and nearby regions for delivering high-quality lift solutions. Their hospital lifts are installed in various healthcare settings—from small clinics to large multi-specialty hospitals—and have earned praise for their performance, safety, and long service life.
The company combines years of experience with a deep understanding of healthcare needs, making them a reliable choice for anyone looking to install or upgrade hospital elevators.

The Trolley Problem, Part 67
If it feels like I'm posting a lot more of these, it's because I hit my 50k limit on the doc and I need to clear out some space.
El uses her powers to figure out where Will and Eddie are, and then try to get to them.
(master post)(also posting to ao3)
Everything moved fast once Hopper came back. Dustin came back on the walkies to tell them that his science teacher had explained how to make a sensory deprivation chamber. They had the kiddie pool to do it, but they needed a lot of salt. Hopper figured out where to go from there, and they all loaded up into cars and drove to the middle school. It was after dark and he’d declared a curfew for the town while there was an emergency going on. No one even saw them, so no one stopped them.
Robin went with a small group to break into the equipment sheds. There, they found bags and bags of road salt, along with hoses and other tools. Some of them ran the hoses back to the gymnasium to get started filling the pool, but she stuck around to help load the salt onto a hand cart. Before the cart got too heavy to push around, they wheeled it back to the gymnasium.
Everyone was working to get it ready. Lucas was helping Tommy hook up the hoses, while Dustin stayed by the edge of the pool to check the temperature. Apparently, it had to be close to body temperature, which would be tough to adjust on the fly.
Carol was getting El ready to go in. They had raided some classrooms to make glasses that would block out the light. Wayne and Hopper came over to help unload the salt, and then went with Mike back to the shed to get more of it.
“Where’s Steve?” Robin asked, looking around. He wasn’t anywhere to be seen.
Nancy checked, too. “Jonathan’s gone, too. Where’d they go?”
Joyce came over to tell them. “They went to get his car,” she said. “He said he has a lot of stuff that we’ll need if we can get a gate open here.”
That was the plan. El would locate Will and Eddie, and then try to open a gate. If she could, some of them would go through to rescue them. They hadn’t drawn straws or anything. The adults had decided they were all going, and then Steve had insisted on going with them. They tried to talk him out of it, but he pointed out that he was the only one of them who knew what was on the other side. It had been a pretty wild argument, and Robin could tell that none of the adults really believed him.
She believed him, though. He knew too much, and he was too cool about everything for it to be made up. Once she accepted that he knew the future, everything made sense, all the way back to him talking to her in Mrs. Click’s class. The Steve Harrington from September would never have done that.
They came back with Steve’s car and all the weapons he’d accumulated in its trunk. The nail-studded bat was probably the scariest, and Robin didn’t want to touch it. Instead, she focused on helping get the pool ready. If she didn’t think about all the weird stuff that was going on around them, it felt like a cool little science experiment. They even got an egg to float on top of the water, which meant that it was ready to help El with her powers.
“Okay, so where do we start?” Nancy asked as Carol and Joyce got El ready to get into the pool. “We’re going to look for people first, right?”
“I will look for Will and Eddie,” El said. She pulled on the blacked-out goggles, leaving them propped up on top of her head, and stepped into the pool.
“Can you look for Barb, too?” Nancy’s voice wavered a little. “I just... We still don’t know where she is. I have a picture of her in my wallet if it helps.”
El nodded and held her hand out, and Nancy fished the picture out for her to look at. She studied it. “Is she in the Upside Down?”
“I don’t think so. I think the lab took her somewhere, though.”
Robin started biting her nails. She felt like a bad friend, because she hadn’t really thought about Barb since Tuesday. “Should she look for Heather or Kurt, too? Like, if they’re still stuck there... Shouldn’t we try to rescue everyone?”
The group of them exchanged looks, and it looked like they were going to get into an argument about it, but Joyce got everyone back on task. “Let’s stick to the plan we already have. She can look for Barb as a warm up, and then Eddie and Will. If we can figure out where they are, then she can try to open a gate. But El, sweetie?” Joyce held onto her arms and turned her around to face her. “If it’s too much, you stop. Okay? Don’t push yourself.”
El always had a serious look on her face, no matter who was talking to her. She nodded slowly and said, “I will not push.” Then she turned back around, pulled the goggles over her eyes, and laid down in the pool.
Most of the group stayed back while she floated there and started using her powers. Robin wasn’t sure what it was supposed to look like, but when the walkies crackled to life and the lanterns and flashlights started blinking, she jumped. Steve was right next to her, and he put his arm on her shoulder to try to calm her down. “I’m fine,” she whispered at him. “It’s just... It’s just like—”
“The demogorgon. I know.” He dropped his hand to his side, and Robin grabbed it as something to hold onto.
El spoke up. “I see Barb,” she said. “She is in a white room with a window. She has a cast on her arm.”
“Is she okay?”
“She is sleeping.” El paused. “Hospital. Nurses talking to a man and a lady. They said... Delusions.”
“That’s probably her parents,” Hopper said, stepping forward. “I had someone looking for her. Last I heard was that she got transferred back to Pennhurst, but that wasn’t confirmed.”
Nancy gave him a withering look, and Robin understood it. He’d had plenty of time to give them this information earlier. They glanced at each other and nodded.
“We’ll figure out how to get her out after,” Hopper continued. “We’ve got this whole gate thing to deal with first.”
They got on with looking for Will and Eddie. At least, El did. She said something about being able to see them. “They’re together. Eddie is sitting down. Will is trying something around his leg.”
“Is he hurt?” Wayne asked. He’d been quiet most of the night, following instructions and staying near Hopper, and his voice sounded rough.
El didn’t say anything at first, and the lights flickered a little more. “Yes,” she said, finally. “His leg is cut. They are trying to stop the bleeding. He says they have to move.”
Steve started squeezing Robin’s hand. “We have to go get him,” he said, loudly. “The thing smells blood.”
“We know, kid,” Hopper said. “Calm down. We don’t know where they are yet.”
“El, sweetie, what do you see around them?” Joyce asked.
“Shelves,” she said. “Lots of shelves with things on them.”
“Like, a garage? Or a shed, maybe?” Jonathan asked. “How big is the room?”
El hesitated. “Big. White floor. Metal shelves.” There was another flicker of the lights.
“Is it a store?” Carol asked. “What kinds of things are on the shelves?”
The lights flickered some more. “I don’t know,” El said. She sounded distressed. “I don’t know what they are.”
“What words do you see, honey?” Joyce asked. “Are there any signs or things you can read?”
That calmed her down. “Yes. Autumn sale. Army surplus. Three zero zero line zero off.”
“The hunting store down on Main,” Wayne said.
“Hot damn,” Hopper said. “You’re right. Smart place for them to hide out. It’s got tons of supplies. Now, let’s try opening that gate.”
El started to shake. “Something’s wrong,” she said. “Eddie says he heard something.”
The tension choked off all other sound in the room as they waited for El to say more. Robin turned to grab onto Steve’s arm with both hands. She saw a lot of other people were clinging to each other, too.
“Something outside.” She whimpered. “He’s pushing Will. Making him go. Will has to run. He has to—”
The walkie on the table crackled and came to life. They all heard the harsh whisper of Eddie saying, “Go to your fort. I’ll be right behind you.”
It squealed a nasty screech and started to pop and hiss. They all flinched, ducking their heads as the overhead lights of the gymnasium flashed for a second, then went dark.
El sat up and pulled the goggles off. She was trembling and trying to catch her breath. “The demogorgon,” she gasped. “It was close.”
“We have to hurry, then,” Steve said. He dropped Robin’s hand and stepped towards her. “Can you open a gate?”
She looked up at him and pressed her lips together. “I will try,” she said. Then she pulled the goggles back down and went back to floating in the water.
The whole room felt like it was holding its breath as she tried. The light’s started to flicker again, but it wasn’t as intense as it had been when she searched for Eddie and Will. Tommy wrapped his arms around Carol’s shoulders and pulled her back from the pool. He looked worried about what was going on. The kids crept closer, trying to watch what she was doing. They were still quiet, though, so they didn’t break her concentration.
Blood flowed heavily from her nose now, mixing with the water of the pool. El furrowed her brow and shook. The lights flashed bright for a minute, then dimmed out. She gasped and twitched in the water.
“Okay, that’s enough,” Joyce said. She reached for El and pulled her to the edge of the pool. “El, honey. You’ve tried hard enough.”
El grabbed onto her and gasped again. “I’m sorry,” she said. “I am trying. I don’t know what I am doing wrong.” She wiped the blood off on the back of her hand. “I can try again.”
“No, kid,” said Hopper. He glanced at Wayne. “There’s no time. We’ll go to the lab instead, just like we planned.”
El looked like she was going to cry. “I can try again.”
Carol helped Joyce pull her out of the pool. “It’s okay, sweetie,” she said. “You found Will and Eddie. That’s enough. They’ll take it from here.”
“But—”
“You did so well!” Carol wrapped her up in a blanket and guided her away from the pool. She gestured for the younger boys to follow her, and they did. “Hawkins is such a big place. They wouldn’t know where to go if it wasn’t for you.”
The rest of them gathered around Hopper to hear what he was planning. “Okay. The four of us are going to the lab.” He gestured at himself, Wayne, Joyce, and Steve. “The rest of you are to stay here and keep those kids safe.”
“We could help you,” Tommy said. “I can swing a weapon just as good as Steve. Better, even!”
“Yeah, but you’re not sneaky, Tom,” Steve said, clapping him on the back. “I’m like a ninja.”
Hopper rolled his eyes. “It’s going to be hard enough sneaking in four of us. I wouldn’t be bringing Harrington in if he didn’t already have so much God-damned experience with this shit.” He stole a look at Joyce. “If I had my choice about it, it’d be just me going.”
“Yeah, yeah.” Joyce rolled her eyes as she pulled her coat on. “Just you, taking on the lab like you’re Rambo or something. Come on, Hop. It’s our kids out there. Hurry up before Wayne and I leave you behind.”
Steve grabbed both Tommy and Robin and pulled them away from the rest of the group. With a serious look on his face, he said, “I’m counting on you two, okay?”
“Counting on both of us?” Robin squeaked as she said it. “I mean, I get that you want Tommy to protect the kids and all, but—”
“No, I mean...” He sighed and straightened up, gathering his thoughts. “If something happens to me, like, if I don’t make it back, I need you two to watch over all these guys. The kids, Nancy, Jon, everyone.”
“Dude,” Tommy said. “Nothing’s going to happen to you. You’ll be fine.”
Steve grabbed him by the shoulders. “I know you’re trying to be all ‘Ha-Ha’ Hagan about this but I need you to listen, okay?”
Tommy smirked. “All right. If you die, can I get your car?”
“God damn it, Tommy,” he muttered, dropping his head. Robin winced.
Finally, Tommy seemed to sober up a little. He leaned in close enough to tap his head against Steve’s. “If you die, man, what am I supposed to tell your folks?” He said it so quietly that Robin barely heard him.
Steve winced. “I... I don’t know. Last time around, I didn’t tell them anything. I didn’t think I could. The lab made us sign all these documents saying they’d ruin our lives if we told people.”
“Jesus,” Robin muttered.
“Yeah, but I’m not signing them this time,” Steve said. He looked like he’d realized something. “Yeah, that’s it. If I don’t come back, then go tell my folks. Tell me dad what happened, and show him the pictures.” He clapped his hands on Robin and Tommy’s shoulders. “You’ve still got them, right?”
“Yeah,” Robin said, and Tommy nodded.
“Yeah, good. Then that’s what you do. Or what we’ll do, even if I do come back. We’ll tell people this time, or at least we’ll make sure that we can tell people, if they try to screw us over. Yeah.”
He pulled them both in for a quick hug before letting them go. He even handed his car keys over to Tommy, just in case. Then he was off with Hopper and the rest, headed to the lab to get Will and Eddie back. Robin gulped as she tried not to think that the choices were to get them back, or die trying.

22. tomorrow and/or 38. clear for jeraffe :3
One Word Writing Prompts (still accepting)
"We've finally got the lumber in from Lakeland," Magnus says, returning from a visit to Garik; there's a purposeful weight to his stride that's been absent for the past three years. Jeryk's heart lifts to see it - even more so when Magnus adds, "We'll start repairs on the tracks at Mount Biran tomorrow, at first light."
Still strange to hear that: at first light.
What's not strange - at least as far as he's concerned - is that they're finally getting somewhere with repairing the trolley network; no, what's strange is that it's taken so long. Yes, of course he understands there was the world to be saved and the sin eaters to be dealt with and the giant Talos to be built, and then there was that queer day when spectral phantoms emerged from the aether... and there have been new Talos to be built, engineers from the former Stoneworks to be hired on, to say nothing of finding the funds for it all-
"If you don't settle down, you'll vibrate right out of your skin," Thaffe says, gently shaking him by one shoulder. "Save some of that energy for tomorrow; you'll need it."
"You'll both need it." Magnus eyes them both, whiskers twitching in a not-quite smile. "Make an early night of it, you two; I want to make some real headway before the worst of the day's heat."
It's as clear a dismissal as they're likely to get, though part of Jeryk wants nothing more than to stay right where he is: right beside Twine's trolley, ready to set off at first light to begin the project he's been dreaming of since... well, since the trolleys began to stop running, when he was just a child. Not for anything can he imagine getting any sleep tonight; not with thoughts of trolleys riding along the rails of his mind.
Still, dragging his feet all the while, he follows Thaffe home. The best way to make tomorrow come is to get tonight over with, he supposes.
"Things are really starting to turn around," Thaffe says quietly. "We'll get the trolleys running again, reopen some of the old mines..." He pauses, looking around, taking in Twine at a glance. "And we'll breathe some life back into this town."
"You're just as excited as I am," Jeryk realizes, delighted.
Thaffe eyes him, more than a little rueful, and shakes his head. "I'm not sure anyone's that excited. Gods help us if there were two of you." Despite his words, his tone is warm and sweet, and it makes Jeryk's heart flutter. Trolleys might very well be his first love, but that doesn't change the fact that he's been head-over-heels for Thaffe since he was barely more than a child.
It's something, isn't it, the idea of building Twine's future together?
He's pretty sure he's said something like that before - when they began working on repairing and maintaining the equipment, maybe; hoping against all hope - but here they are, really doing it.
Alight with eagerness to begin all over again, Jeryk slips his hand into Thaffe's, lacing their fingers together as they walk toward home. "Tomorrow can't come soon enough!"
