The Guards new Medic
Chapter 1 —First Day
Wordcount: ca. 2'400
Pairings: Marshal Commander Fox x fem!Reader
Summary: Your start working at the Coruscant Guard Medbay.
⚠️Warnings⚠️ Canontypical Violence ⚔ mention of Injury🩹
Pls tell me if I forgot something
You had enough of Alderaan. You wanted to go back to Coruscant.
When you looked up where you would be needed, you found an open Position on Coruscant. The Coruscant Guard needed a Medic/Medical assistant or a nurse. Perfect.
You applied for the Job, after they checked you throughand cleared you you had several Holo Calls with the Administration after those you were chosen. You travelled to Coruscant and slept near the Senate in a little Hotel. You would meet your new Boss tomorrow. A bit nervous but nonetheless exited you lay down on the Queensized Hitel Bed.
The next morning you got up at 7 and waited in front of 500 Republika at 8. You wore your Favourite Leather Boots, your dark red Pants, white Shirt and black Leather Jacket.
,,Miss Y/L/N?’’ Asked a Clone without his Helmet on. He had a Red Medic Insignia on his Shoulder pad. And looked safe for the scar on his left cheek, like a normal Clone Trooper.
,,Yes?’’ you turned around and smiled
,,Good to meet you Miss Y/L/N. I'm Sargent Spawn. Welcome to Coruscant.” He said and smiled.
You shook hands. He offered you his Arm and you took it willingly. ,,Have you been to Coruscant before Miss Y/L/N?”
You chuckled. ,,Yes, I grew up here on the Top Level. Then my Mother and I moved. I travelled a lot with her and learned Medic on Mandalore in the Academy of Health, then worked on Alderaan..”
,,You are definitely suited for us if you know some Mando’a.”
Sergeant Spawn lead you away from 500 Republika and to a guarded area where a large 6 story Complex stood. ,,This is where we live.”
The Complex had several Stories but looked nit exactly homey. Spawn lead you through the Large Doubble Door.
You stepped inside and winced. Everything looked so sterile, wherever you looked Duracrete, grey and straight lines.
Spawn chuckled. ,,Every Civi reacts that way. When they enter.” He lead you to a Door where a Picture of Padme Amidala was pinned on.
You grinned at him and gestured to the Picture.. ,,Why Senator Amidala?”
Spawn grin. ,,We established the Rooms that had Senator Amidala pinned on, are just for Women. This is the changing Room. Put on your Uniform and I'll wait here.”
You did as instructed. As you were finished you kept on walking with him. ,,Do I have to wear Armor too?”
《BOOM》
The loud 3xplosion rattled the building. ,,What was that?” You asked worried.
The Sergeants Commlink chimed with the emergency call claxon. ,,Spawn here?"
There was someone coughing and then a weak ,,Spawn. Help!”
,,Commander-I'll be right there! Y/N ! Down the Corridor, last door on the right is the Medbay. Prepare for wounded! I trust your education.” He shouted and run outside.
You run to the Medbay, prepared several Operation Tables and took out the Cast kit, the stitching equipment along with Bacta infusions, you readied three. Then you placed Wound dressings and Bactapatches in all Sizes on the working Trolley. Luckily this Medbay looked similar to the one you had learned in, also the Supplies were listed nest to the Drawer handles. You still you snooped through the drawers and put 2 pair of Gloves on.
Spawn and someone you didn’t know came in with a Clone on a Stretcher. You helped him to transfer the wounded Man to the Cot, there you took his armor off except the Thigh Armor. He had a shrapnel Wound from the Duracrete still inbedded in his Thigh. ,,Darling stand up there, next to his arm please. You're blocking me.” You said kindly but firm to the helpless looking Clone.
The seemingly younger Man did as instructed. ,,Can you help Commander Stone?” he asked worried.
You nodded. ,,We’ll do our best.”
You then took a little cutting machine out, cut the Armor off and placed one of the pre-prepaired Bacta i.V's in his Arm. You gave him further to Spawn since he needed operation. Him and a Medi droid were operating inside the Operation Room. Then the Clone who stood in your Way run out again.
You hastily cleaned up what needed to be cleaned up. Just as you put the things in the Trash, two Clones came in. One pushing the Hover-stretcher with one Arm and the other on it. You quickly helped the one who lay on the Cot.
Behind them a Massif run in. You saw him ,,No Bébé this is the Medbay. You can't come in right now. But I’ll promise I will get you when were finished. Okay love?”
The Massif whined and sat in the doorway. You although taking off armor off, grinned at the massif. ,, Love? Not in the Doorway next to it, outside.”
The Massif whined again but did as it was told.
The Clone who you were treating chuckled despite being in pain. ,,Grizzer usually only listens to me and he hates strangers.”
You smiled. ,,Well I think he’s cute.” You studied him ,,Where ‘s the Pain?”
,,My right arm, I think it’s broken and my right leg feels funny.”
You first X-rayed the arm, a clean fracture, you cast the arm and placed an i.v in his other. Then you went to the leg and gasped as you saw how swollen and coloured it was. You scanned and saw a ruptured artery. ,,Surgery now.”
Spawn took him and you moved on and to the one who had pushed the Hover-strecher. His left Shoulder hung zt a wrong angle and he cradled his arm to his chest. ,,Love, let me help you.”
He eyed you suspiciously but nodded. You X-rayed the arm, just a dislocated shoulder. You gave him standard pain meds and put the shoulder back in. You also gave him a shoulder sling so he would not use it.
Two healthy Clones pushed one on a Stretcher into the Medbay. You took him over, he had broken his arm 2 times; upper arm and forearm, they were at least clean fractures. You controlled his pupils. He had a concussion as well and a shrapnel injurie in his shin. Again, you gave him further to Sargent Spawn. Then others came in. You treated them. They had little lacerations, a Bactapach could fix.
You checked on the ones Spawn had operated on. Vitals stable and slowly waking up from the narcotics.
Once he had finished operating on his brothers, Spawn came over and sighed. ,,I think that was the first wave. You did good, thank you Miss Y/L/N.” He relaxed a bit and you begun to clean things. His Commlink chimed again woth the emergency call claxon. ,,Spawn here?”
An agitated Clone shouted over the noise. ,,The Commander, were bringing him in now, get ready!”
,,How bad?”
,,Very!”
,,Y/L/N get ready.”
You were ready and though maybe he had said it to himself. He seemed anxious all of the sudden and paced the Medbay.
Then Two men burst in the Medbay. The Commander on a stretcher. One of them with longer hair stood in your way. You jumped over the next Cot to reach the Commanders Side.
He shirked ,,Di’kut!” (Idiot!)
You turned. ,,Dinii!” (Lunatic!)
,,Spawn what’s the Civi doing here?!” He barked.
Spawn glared at him. ,,She’s my new Medic and you’re in her way!”
You ignored them and took off the Commanders armor on the right side and after checking his Arm placed an i.V in it. You then removed the Leg armor and grimaced, checked the wound and readied it for operation. The Commander had three open fractures on his legs, his shins were both fractured, his left thigh and an upper arm fracture along with a concussion. Spawn run to the operation room. ,,Y/L/N with me!”
You helped Spawn with the open fractures and did as he instructed. After that you stitched him up and returned shortly after to the others. Once you discarded the OR Coat, hairnet abd Mask you cleaned up again.
The clone who called you Di’kut waited for Spawn. ,,How's he?” He asked his Brother as soon ashe saw him.
Spawn sighed. ,,Stable for the moment. You just found him in the right moment. A few minutes later and he would have lost too much blood.”
,,Sargent, are we finished?” You asked.
He nodded.
,,Good then I have one more patient.” You said and walked out the door to the lonely Masiff . ,,Grizzer? You can come in now.”
Grizzer happily walked in and nuzzled your Knee. You chuckled. ,,You’re welcome. Love.” You scratched his Head and walked over to where Hound was lying. You took off your Uniform shirt and lay it on the Trolley. Luckily you still wore an undershirt. You pet your Chest for Grizzer to come up. Spawn wanted to protest but you lifted Grizzer up in your arms and placed him on the Side of your Hip.
It looked funny but Thorn and Spawn were concerned because they never saw anyone lift Grizzer like a puppy, especially because this was dangerous. Grizzer with his sharp teeth and strong jaw so close to your head and neck . ,,Grizzer? Where you looking for him?” You asked, totally not concerned about your safety.
Grizzer happily whined and leaned towards Hound. Hound gawked at you and padded Grizzer with his good hand. ,,Hey my Boy. Got a new friend? Be careful... he might bite you.”
You shook your head. ,,He won't.
Grizzer barked, he wanted to lick Hound but you stepped back as you noticed. ,,No Bébé. You can kiss him all you want, when he leaves the Medbay.”
Grizzer whined and looked insulted. You cuddled him, he nuzzled Hound again and then growled at Hound. ,,Grizzer what’s wrong?” he asked.
He wiggled and you let him down. He then kept on growling at Hound.
You crossed your arms. ,,Aiaiai! Grizzer no Growling at him. What’s the problem?” You asked and leaned down to him.
Grizzer nuzzled your Chest and the he looked at Hound who had looked at your Cleavage.
You laughed.
,,Oh Grizzer. You don’t have to. It’s okay.” You pet his head.
Hound blushed but you ignored it for his Sake. Thorn and Spawn looked at each other. ,,You said you learned at Mandalore. Where did you learn?”
,,Well a Friend took me under his Wings. He trained me as an Emergency Doctor/Medic and then because he could not give me the certificate I learned Medic at Mandalores Healthcare Academy. The academy was easier to pass than his tests.” You chuckled.
,,How is it that Grizzer follows your every word? What did you do?” Asked Hound curiosly.
You shrugged. ,,My Friend had 4 Massifs, so I know how to treat them. They are incredibly intelligent."
,,Who is your Friend? Is he Military?” Asked Thorn.
You chuckled at the two asking you out. ,,Have you heard of Fenn Rau?”
Thorn scrutinized you. ,,Yes, what about him?”
,,He took me under his Wings... well, he really had me under his Wings. He trained me as a Pilot too.”
Thorn got up. ,,Hold on, you want to tell me, that Fenn Rau, former Cuyvaldar. Trained you as Pilot and Medic?!”
You shrugged. ,,Yes what about ner Ba’vodu?” (Uncle)
Thorns Eyes widened. ,,Gar Ba’vodu?! Fenn Rau cuy gar Ba’vodu?!” (Your Uncle?! Fenn Rau is your Uncle?!)
You smiled. ,,Elek, tion'jor?” (Yes, why?)
Spawn got up as well. ,,I was wondering how you knew to stich like that, that explains a lot Miss Y/L/N. Welcome to the Coruscant Guard. Very Perspective of you to take of the Uniform shirt to cuddle Grizzer, you know Hygiene.”
He turned to Thorn. ,,Do you mind showing her around. I got my Hands full.” He guestured to the Medbay.
,,Yeah, sure. If you'd fallow me, Miss.”
You nodded, washed you Hands and put your Uniform back on. Grizzer barked and run after you. ,,I guess Grizzer comes too.” You said and scratched his Head again.”
,,Miss. I wanted to apologize. It was rude to stand in your Way and called you Di’kut.” Thorn said and held his Neck sheepishly.
You grin and waved him off ,,It’s alright. I called you Dinii. Peace, Thorn?”
He grinned and nodded. ,,I'd like that, Miss.”
,,All right but call me Y/N .”
He grinned. ,,Well, Y/N come on then.” He held his Arm out for you.
You gladly took it. Grizzer walked beside you. Thorn lead you to the Messhall. It was mostly empty safe for a rowdy table of Null Arc's and a golden Mandalorian.
,,This is the Messhall. We have Rations and sometimes donations like Cakes or Biscuits.” He pointed to the Caf Machines. ,,Caf. But it’s probably too strong for you-“
,,Y/N!”
A'den run towards you and picked you up.
,,A’den?’’ You asked bewildered.
He laughed. ,,Kandosii!” He swung you around and over his back. Grizzer to your Surprise didn’t do anything. ,,Vode! Look who I found!” Said A’den loud as we walked back fo the Table.
Prudii asked him. ,,A pair of Leather boots?”
A'den turned around, showing you hanging from his shoulder down his back. ,,Y/N !” They said in Union.
You waved. ,,Hi, long time no see.”
Kal got up and came over to you. ,,A'den, let her down!”
He did as his Father ordered.
,,Kal.” You smiled and hugged him qround the waist.
He hugged you around ypur shoulders and kissed the top of your head. ,,Ad’ika. It’s good to have you here. I missed you.”
You looked up at him. ,,I missed you too. But you always knew where I was, didn’t you?”
He nodded and you chuckled.
,,My dears, I have to stop by later. Thorn is showing me around. It's my first Day here.”
Kom’rk chuckled. ,,You will hate the Caf. Probably coloured water to you.”
You shrugged. ,,I have a Coffee Machine at home. I might just take it here.”
You waved and went back to Thorn. ,, Ad’ika?” He looked questioning. ,,Why does Sargent Skirata call you daughter?”
You shrugged. ,,This has to stay between the two of us, Thorn. I don’t want the Men to respect me for who I know but for who I am.”
He nodded. ,,I grew up with them. Fenn often took me to Kamino for my flight training, I did all the Medic training there too. There might be some of your brothers who know me too. For example Omega Squad and Delta. And the Alpha’s”
He sighed. ,, Why is this not as surprising as it should be?”
You shrugged.
He lead you to the Gym. ,,I wanted to ask you, if you'd like to spar with me. But I have second thought now.”
You laughed. As you entered the few Coruscant Guard Troopers saluted. ,,Why are they saluting you?”
He smirked. ,,Because I'm a Commander.”
You hid your embarrassment behind your Hands.
He gently peeled your Hands away from your face. ,,Don’t be embarrassed. I didn’t behave like a Commander, just keep on calling me Thorn. I like it. And maybe you'll forget that I don’t really want to fight you.”
You laughed. Not only because of that but in the corner of your eye, you saw Darman fall of the crate. You toppled over laughing as Fi wanted to help him and slipped too.
Grizzer sniffed you worried but then sat beside you on the floor. ,,Hey!” Darman screamed. ,,Stop laughing!” He demanded loudly.
You shook you head. And between laughter said. ,,Dar gar- gar cuy shu'shuk!” (Dar you-you are a disaster!)
Both men poked their Heads over the crates which sent you laughing again. Both screamed ,,Ori’vod!” and run to you. (Big Sister!)
Daarman swung you up, you flew over his Head and he caught you Bridal style. ,,Ori’vod ! What are you doing here?!” He asked and cuddled you close.
,,Hey don’t hog her Dar!” Protested Fi, even if you just had wrapped your arms around Darman.
Fi took you over and cuddled you too.
,,Fi! I've missed you.’’ You said and hugged him around the neck. Then you leaned over to Daarman. You wiggled your Eyebrows while you said. ,,How is your Cyare fairing?” (Beloved)
Daarman blushed. He glared at you. ,,Peha cuy gar Cyare, Ori’vod ?” (How is your Beloved?)
You shrugged. ,,Ni nu ganna Cyare.” (I don’t have a Beloved.)
The Coruscant Guard Trooper behind you watched you as you sope with Fi and Darman. ,,You can let me down again, Fi.”
He did do that. Thorn and Grizzer waited for you to continue on with them. You bid the two Commandos Goodbye and left.
Thorn smirked. ,,You did say Omega and Delta, didn’t you?”
You nodded.
,,Yeah, they're not going to visit me while I work. All of them hate the Medbay. They'd rather be in a firefight.”
Thorn showed you his Office, your own quarters and brought you back to the Medbay.

The Trolley Problem, Part 67
If it feels like I'm posting a lot more of these, it's because I hit my 50k limit on the doc and I need to clear out some space.
El uses her powers to figure out where Will and Eddie are, and then try to get to them.
(master post)(also posting to ao3)
Everything moved fast once Hopper came back. Dustin came back on the walkies to tell them that his science teacher had explained how to make a sensory deprivation chamber. They had the kiddie pool to do it, but they needed a lot of salt. Hopper figured out where to go from there, and they all loaded up into cars and drove to the middle school. It was after dark and he’d declared a curfew for the town while there was an emergency going on. No one even saw them, so no one stopped them.
Robin went with a small group to break into the equipment sheds. There, they found bags and bags of road salt, along with hoses and other tools. Some of them ran the hoses back to the gymnasium to get started filling the pool, but she stuck around to help load the salt onto a hand cart. Before the cart got too heavy to push around, they wheeled it back to the gymnasium.
Everyone was working to get it ready. Lucas was helping Tommy hook up the hoses, while Dustin stayed by the edge of the pool to check the temperature. Apparently, it had to be close to body temperature, which would be tough to adjust on the fly.
Carol was getting El ready to go in. They had raided some classrooms to make glasses that would block out the light. Wayne and Hopper came over to help unload the salt, and then went with Mike back to the shed to get more of it.
“Where’s Steve?” Robin asked, looking around. He wasn’t anywhere to be seen.
Nancy checked, too. “Jonathan’s gone, too. Where’d they go?”
Joyce came over to tell them. “They went to get his car,” she said. “He said he has a lot of stuff that we’ll need if we can get a gate open here.”
That was the plan. El would locate Will and Eddie, and then try to open a gate. If she could, some of them would go through to rescue them. They hadn’t drawn straws or anything. The adults had decided they were all going, and then Steve had insisted on going with them. They tried to talk him out of it, but he pointed out that he was the only one of them who knew what was on the other side. It had been a pretty wild argument, and Robin could tell that none of the adults really believed him.
She believed him, though. He knew too much, and he was too cool about everything for it to be made up. Once she accepted that he knew the future, everything made sense, all the way back to him talking to her in Mrs. Click’s class. The Steve Harrington from September would never have done that.
They came back with Steve’s car and all the weapons he’d accumulated in its trunk. The nail-studded bat was probably the scariest, and Robin didn’t want to touch it. Instead, she focused on helping get the pool ready. If she didn’t think about all the weird stuff that was going on around them, it felt like a cool little science experiment. They even got an egg to float on top of the water, which meant that it was ready to help El with her powers.
“Okay, so where do we start?” Nancy asked as Carol and Joyce got El ready to get into the pool. “We’re going to look for people first, right?”
“I will look for Will and Eddie,” El said. She pulled on the blacked-out goggles, leaving them propped up on top of her head, and stepped into the pool.
“Can you look for Barb, too?” Nancy’s voice wavered a little. “I just... We still don’t know where she is. I have a picture of her in my wallet if it helps.”
El nodded and held her hand out, and Nancy fished the picture out for her to look at. She studied it. “Is she in the Upside Down?”
“I don’t think so. I think the lab took her somewhere, though.”
Robin started biting her nails. She felt like a bad friend, because she hadn’t really thought about Barb since Tuesday. “Should she look for Heather or Kurt, too? Like, if they’re still stuck there... Shouldn’t we try to rescue everyone?”
The group of them exchanged looks, and it looked like they were going to get into an argument about it, but Joyce got everyone back on task. “Let’s stick to the plan we already have. She can look for Barb as a warm up, and then Eddie and Will. If we can figure out where they are, then she can try to open a gate. But El, sweetie?” Joyce held onto her arms and turned her around to face her. “If it’s too much, you stop. Okay? Don’t push yourself.”
El always had a serious look on her face, no matter who was talking to her. She nodded slowly and said, “I will not push.” Then she turned back around, pulled the goggles over her eyes, and laid down in the pool.
Most of the group stayed back while she floated there and started using her powers. Robin wasn’t sure what it was supposed to look like, but when the walkies crackled to life and the lanterns and flashlights started blinking, she jumped. Steve was right next to her, and he put his arm on her shoulder to try to calm her down. “I’m fine,” she whispered at him. “It’s just... It’s just like—”
“The demogorgon. I know.” He dropped his hand to his side, and Robin grabbed it as something to hold onto.
El spoke up. “I see Barb,” she said. “She is in a white room with a window. She has a cast on her arm.”
“Is she okay?”
“She is sleeping.” El paused. “Hospital. Nurses talking to a man and a lady. They said... Delusions.”
“That’s probably her parents,” Hopper said, stepping forward. “I had someone looking for her. Last I heard was that she got transferred back to Pennhurst, but that wasn’t confirmed.”
Nancy gave him a withering look, and Robin understood it. He’d had plenty of time to give them this information earlier. They glanced at each other and nodded.
“We’ll figure out how to get her out after,” Hopper continued. “We’ve got this whole gate thing to deal with first.”
They got on with looking for Will and Eddie. At least, El did. She said something about being able to see them. “They’re together. Eddie is sitting down. Will is trying something around his leg.”
“Is he hurt?” Wayne asked. He’d been quiet most of the night, following instructions and staying near Hopper, and his voice sounded rough.
El didn’t say anything at first, and the lights flickered a little more. “Yes,” she said, finally. “His leg is cut. They are trying to stop the bleeding. He says they have to move.”
Steve started squeezing Robin’s hand. “We have to go get him,” he said, loudly. “The thing smells blood.”
“We know, kid,” Hopper said. “Calm down. We don’t know where they are yet.”
“El, sweetie, what do you see around them?” Joyce asked.
“Shelves,” she said. “Lots of shelves with things on them.”
“Like, a garage? Or a shed, maybe?” Jonathan asked. “How big is the room?”
El hesitated. “Big. White floor. Metal shelves.” There was another flicker of the lights.
“Is it a store?” Carol asked. “What kinds of things are on the shelves?”
The lights flickered some more. “I don’t know,” El said. She sounded distressed. “I don’t know what they are.”
“What words do you see, honey?” Joyce asked. “Are there any signs or things you can read?”
That calmed her down. “Yes. Autumn sale. Army surplus. Three zero zero line zero off.”
“The hunting store down on Main,” Wayne said.
“Hot damn,” Hopper said. “You’re right. Smart place for them to hide out. It’s got tons of supplies. Now, let’s try opening that gate.”
El started to shake. “Something’s wrong,” she said. “Eddie says he heard something.”
The tension choked off all other sound in the room as they waited for El to say more. Robin turned to grab onto Steve’s arm with both hands. She saw a lot of other people were clinging to each other, too.
“Something outside.” She whimpered. “He’s pushing Will. Making him go. Will has to run. He has to—”
The walkie on the table crackled and came to life. They all heard the harsh whisper of Eddie saying, “Go to your fort. I’ll be right behind you.”
It squealed a nasty screech and started to pop and hiss. They all flinched, ducking their heads as the overhead lights of the gymnasium flashed for a second, then went dark.
El sat up and pulled the goggles off. She was trembling and trying to catch her breath. “The demogorgon,” she gasped. “It was close.”
“We have to hurry, then,” Steve said. He dropped Robin’s hand and stepped towards her. “Can you open a gate?”
She looked up at him and pressed her lips together. “I will try,” she said. Then she pulled the goggles back down and went back to floating in the water.
The whole room felt like it was holding its breath as she tried. The light’s started to flicker again, but it wasn’t as intense as it had been when she searched for Eddie and Will. Tommy wrapped his arms around Carol’s shoulders and pulled her back from the pool. He looked worried about what was going on. The kids crept closer, trying to watch what she was doing. They were still quiet, though, so they didn’t break her concentration.
Blood flowed heavily from her nose now, mixing with the water of the pool. El furrowed her brow and shook. The lights flashed bright for a minute, then dimmed out. She gasped and twitched in the water.
“Okay, that’s enough,” Joyce said. She reached for El and pulled her to the edge of the pool. “El, honey. You’ve tried hard enough.”
El grabbed onto her and gasped again. “I’m sorry,” she said. “I am trying. I don’t know what I am doing wrong.” She wiped the blood off on the back of her hand. “I can try again.”
“No, kid,” said Hopper. He glanced at Wayne. “There’s no time. We’ll go to the lab instead, just like we planned.”
El looked like she was going to cry. “I can try again.”
Carol helped Joyce pull her out of the pool. “It’s okay, sweetie,” she said. “You found Will and Eddie. That’s enough. They’ll take it from here.”
“But—”
“You did so well!” Carol wrapped her up in a blanket and guided her away from the pool. She gestured for the younger boys to follow her, and they did. “Hawkins is such a big place. They wouldn’t know where to go if it wasn’t for you.”
The rest of them gathered around Hopper to hear what he was planning. “Okay. The four of us are going to the lab.” He gestured at himself, Wayne, Joyce, and Steve. “The rest of you are to stay here and keep those kids safe.”
“We could help you,” Tommy said. “I can swing a weapon just as good as Steve. Better, even!”
“Yeah, but you’re not sneaky, Tom,” Steve said, clapping him on the back. “I’m like a ninja.”
Hopper rolled his eyes. “It’s going to be hard enough sneaking in four of us. I wouldn’t be bringing Harrington in if he didn’t already have so much God-damned experience with this shit.” He stole a look at Joyce. “If I had my choice about it, it’d be just me going.”
“Yeah, yeah.” Joyce rolled her eyes as she pulled her coat on. “Just you, taking on the lab like you’re Rambo or something. Come on, Hop. It’s our kids out there. Hurry up before Wayne and I leave you behind.”
Steve grabbed both Tommy and Robin and pulled them away from the rest of the group. With a serious look on his face, he said, “I’m counting on you two, okay?”
“Counting on both of us?” Robin squeaked as she said it. “I mean, I get that you want Tommy to protect the kids and all, but—”
“No, I mean...” He sighed and straightened up, gathering his thoughts. “If something happens to me, like, if I don’t make it back, I need you two to watch over all these guys. The kids, Nancy, Jon, everyone.”
“Dude,” Tommy said. “Nothing’s going to happen to you. You’ll be fine.”
Steve grabbed him by the shoulders. “I know you’re trying to be all ‘Ha-Ha’ Hagan about this but I need you to listen, okay?”
Tommy smirked. “All right. If you die, can I get your car?”
“God damn it, Tommy,” he muttered, dropping his head. Robin winced.
Finally, Tommy seemed to sober up a little. He leaned in close enough to tap his head against Steve’s. “If you die, man, what am I supposed to tell your folks?” He said it so quietly that Robin barely heard him.
Steve winced. “I... I don’t know. Last time around, I didn’t tell them anything. I didn’t think I could. The lab made us sign all these documents saying they’d ruin our lives if we told people.”
“Jesus,” Robin muttered.
“Yeah, but I’m not signing them this time,” Steve said. He looked like he’d realized something. “Yeah, that’s it. If I don’t come back, then go tell my folks. Tell me dad what happened, and show him the pictures.” He clapped his hands on Robin and Tommy’s shoulders. “You’ve still got them, right?”
“Yeah,” Robin said, and Tommy nodded.
“Yeah, good. Then that’s what you do. Or what we’ll do, even if I do come back. We’ll tell people this time, or at least we’ll make sure that we can tell people, if they try to screw us over. Yeah.”
He pulled them both in for a quick hug before letting them go. He even handed his car keys over to Tommy, just in case. Then he was off with Hopper and the rest, headed to the lab to get Will and Eddie back. Robin gulped as she tried not to think that the choices were to get them back, or die trying.

In the early hours of March 22, Russian forces launched what Ukraine’s energy minister called the “largest attack” on Ukrainian infrastructure in recent times. Numerous critical infrastructure facilities across the country, including the Dnipro Dam, have been hit, and many places are without power or are under rolling blackouts to reduce demand on damaged systems. Additionally, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant was briefly disconnected from the grid during the strikes, posing a risk of shutdown. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the attack a direct “war against ordinary people’s lives.”
Air raid sirens sounded throughout Ukraine early Friday as the Russian military launched massive missile strikes across the country. Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko called the strikes “the most extensive attack on Ukrainian energy infrastructure in recent times,” saying they were aimed at “causing a large-scale breakdown of the nation’s energy system.” Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, the head of Ukraine’s high-voltage transmission operator Ukrenergo, concurred, saying the attack was the largest of its kind since the start of the full-scale war.
According to Halushchenko, power generation facilities as well as transmission and distribution systems in various regions were hit and damaged. Many places are without power.
The city of Kharkiv has been left almost entirely without electricity or running water following Russian strikes on over 15 energy infrastructure targets in the area, reported Governor Oleh Syniehubov.
Russia launched 12 missiles on Zaporizhzhia, said regional Governor Ivan Fedorov. According to preliminary information, at least one person was killed and eight people were injured. Fedorov later reported that two more people are missing. At least seven residential buildings in the area were destroyed and 35 were damaged.
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, currently under Russian control, was also on the verge of shutdown. During the attack, the overhead power line connecting the occupied plant to Ukraine’s power grid was disconnected.
Drone and missile strikes also damaged critical infrastructure in Kryvyi Rih, said Mayor Oleksandr Vilkul. The city is implementing emergency shutdown schedules and hospitals and other critical facilities are switching to generator power where possible.
Pro-Kremlin Telegram channels reported a strike on the Dnipro Dam, a hydroelectric power plant. Petro Andryushchenko, an aide to Mariupol’s legitimate mayor, said a Russian missile hit a trolley traveling along the dam. According to him, the vehicle was filled with civilians who were commuting to work.
The Ukrainian energy company Ukrhydroenergo wrote that a fire broke out at the station but that the situation is under control and there is “no threat of breach.”
Ukrhydroenergo’s CEO, Ihor Syrota, told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty that the Russian military hit the station’s Hydroelectric Power Plant 1 and Hydroelectric Power Plant 2 (HPP-1 and HPP-2). According to him, HPP-2 was severely damaged and may be beyond repair. One of the station’s supports was also hit, and crane beams were broken. “We’ll have to completely restore the machine room and electrical equipment,” Syrota said. “We’ll assess the consequences within the day and take stock of what happened.”
Authorities in Ukraine’s Sumy region have introduced a schedule of emergency blackouts to cope with damage from strikes on energy infrastructure. Russia’s attacks also reportedly damaged critical energy infrastructure in Ukraine’s Vinnytsia, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Mykolaiv, and Odesa regions.
Khmelnytskyi Mayor Oleksandr Symchyshyn wrote that there were dead and wounded after Russian strikes hit infrastructure facilities and homes in the city. Ukraine’s Internal Affairs Ministry confirmed the deaths of two people in Khmelnytskyi.
Missile debris fell on homes in Ukraine’s Poltava region, and rolling blackouts have been implemented in the area. Local authorities have also introduced blackouts in the Kirovohrad region to reduce the strain on the energy grid.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia launched over 60 drones and around 90 missiles in the attack. Commenting on the strikes, Zelensky wrote that they were clear evidence of Russia’s intent to harm Ukrainian civilians:
Russia is waging war against ordinary people’s lives. […] Russian missiles don’t have delays like aid packages to our nation do. Shahed [drones] have no indecision like some politicians. It’s important to understand the cost of delays and postponed decisions. Patriot systems should be protecting Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia; we need air defense systems to protect people, infrastructure, homes, and dams. Our partners know exactly what’s needed. They can certainly provide support. These decisions are necessary. Life must be protected from these Moscow barbarians.

50 (punctual) for the twine boys
One Word Writing Prompts (still accepting)
The sky overhead turns glorious shades of orange and violet, which Thaffe recognizes - through some soul-deep memory, dimly recalled - as a sunset. He pauses in his work, gazing skyward. It sets his heart to racing: sunset means night, the unfamiliar blanket of darkness which had settled over Amh Araeng only yesterday, after over a hundred years of Light. It had emerged wholecloth the night before, after the slaying of the Lightwarden, but tonight...
Tonight he'll get to watch night fall properly.
Or perhaps not, he thinks, catching sight of Jeryk dashing toward the trolley tracks as quickly as his legs will carry him. What is he up to? It wouldn't be the first time the man's worked through the late hours on some project or other... but that was when there was always ample light to be had. With night, true night, falling soon, there's no telling what trouble Jeryk might get himself into.
And he's been acting odd since they'd gotten the Talos up and moving again. Thaffe doesn't know what's gotten into him, but it doesn't seem wise to leave him unattended for long.
He glances at the sky again, then sighs. Dammit, Jeryk.
The shadows are already deepening as he sets off down the tracks; he keeps his eyes on his feet, careful not to misstep in the unfamiliar darkness. He recalls Jeryk's breakneck sprint and grits his teeth - he'd be a lot more worried about it if Jeryk hadn't been dashing across the tracks, heedless of the risk of falling or snapping a leg, since he could walk. He expects the regular pattern of the ties comes as naturally to Jeryk as flight comes to a bird.
"There you are," he says, nearly bumping into the smaller hume in his concentration; Jeryk spares him half a glance. "What are you-"
"It should just about be time," Jeryk says, gazing up... not at the sky, like any normal person, but at one of the lanterns hanging alongside the tracks.
Thaffe blinks at it, as though he'd forgotten the things existed - for all they've been keeping the tracks and equipment in something like working order these past few years, he hadn't thought to consider the lanterns. Who would? Who had need of lanterns in a world drowning in Light? In times long past, he supposes, many of the miners of Twine would have headed home from the mines either in the dark hours of the morning or just after sundown, and they'd have welcomed the lights along the tracks leading the way home...
True darkness settles over them, broken only by the stars overhead. Beside him, Thaffe hears Jeryk draw in a breath and hold it.
The lantern flickers.
And lights.
All along the track, the old lanterns blaze to life, a lifeline between Twine and the mines.
Jeryk lets out the breath in a cheer, practically applauding; Thaffe reaches a hand out to steady him, resting a hand against Jeryk's back - but his own heart leaps in unexpected celebration, kindled alongside that little lantern.
It's a little piece of Twine, back from the dead.
"Right on time," Jeryk says, smacking the lantern post almost affectionately. "Just like they did before the Flood!"
"You've been repairing them," Thaffe guesses, marveling. "How did you even think to start?"
"When night came to Lakeland." Still gazing up at the lantern, Jeryk leans into him, and Thaffe welcomes it, winding an arm around the shorter man's shoulders. The night comes with the same chill as ever, and Jeryk's excitement gives off a warmth all its own. "I thought... wouldn't it be something if the Warrior of Darkness made their way here, too?"
He hadn't dared hope. A lot of things have happened in the past couple of days that Thaffe hadn't dared hope for.
"Good thinking." He gives Jeryk a little squeeze. "And now I won't have to fear breaking my neck chasing after you down the tracks at night."
Unrepentant, Jeryk grins, pecking Thaffe on the cheek with an unapologetic kiss. "I wanted to make sure the lanterns lit on time, that's all. We can run the trolley at night! What's more exciting than a trolley ride under the stars-"
"Some other time." Thaffe steers Jeryk homeward. "I've had enough excitement for a few days."

"You need to fix the structural root of the problem" is both true and completely missing the point of the problem.
Ideally nobody would be loitering on / tied to the trolley tracks.
Ideally the trolley would be equipped with emergency brakes that could stop it in time.
Ideally, absent those, there would still be some way to save everybody.
The problem is that isn't always the case. There are people on the tracks. The trolley's emergency brake is broken. Multi-track drifting might kill the people on the trolley with you in addition to whoever it hits. And nothing you can do to make sure this never happens again will be done in time to stop this instance.
Fixing the trolley's brakes (or the platform's sight-lines) so you can stop in time will save future lives.
Adding warning signs so people stay off the tracks will save future lives.
Tracking down the person tying people to the railroad tracks with save future lives.
But the entire point of the problem is that those measures proved insufficient and there are people on the tracks now who can't be saved by fixing the brakes tomorrow.
"How can we make sure we never have to choose again?" is a valuable question! But it's an invalid answer to the trolley problem itself.

22. tomorrow and/or 38. clear for jeraffe :3
One Word Writing Prompts (still accepting)
"We've finally got the lumber in from Lakeland," Magnus says, returning from a visit to Garik; there's a purposeful weight to his stride that's been absent for the past three years. Jeryk's heart lifts to see it - even more so when Magnus adds, "We'll start repairs on the tracks at Mount Biran tomorrow, at first light."
Still strange to hear that: at first light.
What's not strange - at least as far as he's concerned - is that they're finally getting somewhere with repairing the trolley network; no, what's strange is that it's taken so long. Yes, of course he understands there was the world to be saved and the sin eaters to be dealt with and the giant Talos to be built, and then there was that queer day when spectral phantoms emerged from the aether... and there have been new Talos to be built, engineers from the former Stoneworks to be hired on, to say nothing of finding the funds for it all-
"If you don't settle down, you'll vibrate right out of your skin," Thaffe says, gently shaking him by one shoulder. "Save some of that energy for tomorrow; you'll need it."
"You'll both need it." Magnus eyes them both, whiskers twitching in a not-quite smile. "Make an early night of it, you two; I want to make some real headway before the worst of the day's heat."
It's as clear a dismissal as they're likely to get, though part of Jeryk wants nothing more than to stay right where he is: right beside Twine's trolley, ready to set off at first light to begin the project he's been dreaming of since... well, since the trolleys began to stop running, when he was just a child. Not for anything can he imagine getting any sleep tonight; not with thoughts of trolleys riding along the rails of his mind.
Still, dragging his feet all the while, he follows Thaffe home. The best way to make tomorrow come is to get tonight over with, he supposes.
"Things are really starting to turn around," Thaffe says quietly. "We'll get the trolleys running again, reopen some of the old mines..." He pauses, looking around, taking in Twine at a glance. "And we'll breathe some life back into this town."
"You're just as excited as I am," Jeryk realizes, delighted.
Thaffe eyes him, more than a little rueful, and shakes his head. "I'm not sure anyone's that excited. Gods help us if there were two of you." Despite his words, his tone is warm and sweet, and it makes Jeryk's heart flutter. Trolleys might very well be his first love, but that doesn't change the fact that he's been head-over-heels for Thaffe since he was barely more than a child.
It's something, isn't it, the idea of building Twine's future together?
He's pretty sure he's said something like that before - when they began working on repairing and maintaining the equipment, maybe; hoping against all hope - but here they are, really doing it.
Alight with eagerness to begin all over again, Jeryk slips his hand into Thaffe's, lacing their fingers together as they walk toward home. "Tomorrow can't come soon enough!"
