They really were just like "We're going to make the most absurdly pretty guy, give him just buckets of autism, and stick him out at the edge of the world to be a bright pure ray of sunshine during one of the most emotionally fraught arcs of Shadowbringers"

#loveintheair Day 1 - Home
Fandom: Final Fantasy XIV Characters/Relationships: Thaffe Morhand/Jeryk Motplowe Warnings: None Prompt List & Event by @mischiefmilly Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 | Day 5 | Day 6 | Day 7
Kicking off with a little surprise gift for @sezja 💜
Tumblr media
Thaffe wiped a light sheen of sweat off his brow, gripping the sack over his shoulder a mite tighter as a cool wind blew, ruffling through his hair. He was still growing accustomed to this strange new chill, as were the rest of Amh Araeng’s residents. No one blamed anyone, after having known nothing but unforgiving heat for a hundred years. But truth be told, he thought it suited the night sky, which had been responsible for the change in temperature in the first place; they seemed to go hand in hand, like the fit of a perfectly-sized glove. And he thought the night sky suited Amh Araeng.
The residual heat absorbed by the Flood kept any real cold at bay, and he was glad for the wind as it gently pulled him along the tracks, his steps homeward bound. Jeryk had likely finished his work for the day too, if the pull of Norvrandt-wide tracks and trolleys of never-before-seen proportions hadn’t kept him there this time. If it had, Thaffe would just have to go and remind him how dark it already was. He’d already done so a few times, and a funny little feeling would squeeze his heart whenever he’d see Jeryk’s eyes go all round, mouth forming an ‘O’ as the revelation of night hit him again.
Today (or tonight, rather) however, Thaffe spotted a bobbing light far ahead; he knew the rhythm of those skipped steps from the way the lantern swung and he smiled. Jerky’s small form soon came into view, illuminated by the warm light.
“Thaffe!” Jeryk’s footsteps became louder and faster as he broke into a light run, hopping up to Thaffe’s side to give him an affectionate peck on his cheek; that warmed Thaffe’s face instantly. Then he was back to chattering away, this time about how he’d possibly figured out a way to safely lay tracks through the Dragging Tail. If successful, it would connect the existing tracks all the way to Mord Souq! Thaffe listened, never quite knowing the full run of what Jeryk was saying but always happy to hear him. He was his lodestone; the skies could turn green and Amh Araeng could be flooded overnight, but Jeryk would always be Jeryk. Home.
“Watch your steps,” Thaffe reminded gently. After a moment's deliberation, he leaned down to return Jeryk’s earlier kiss with one of his own.

Ah, but you see, smaller trolleys don't occur to him as an option until Thaffe brings the idea up later. Bigger is better!
But also I absolutely think sooner or later he'd have come up with some way to get the trolleys moving again even without our intervention - maybe a trip to the Crystarium would get him thinking about other ways the trolleys could potentially be powered, in the absence of a working Talos...
@sezja I just did all the Twine stuff again, and I have to ask: Why did Jeryk not simply make a smaller, lighter trolley that ran on the same rails, and got a team of guys to smash the gates open so they could go everywhere?
(I know, I know, the theme is stagnancy and despair so no one could be motivated to move positively until the night returns and the light aether leaves them alone (thematically but also maybe it's a real weight on the ole motivation, who knows))
BUT LIKE HE'S SO MOTIVATED ALREADY. Only guy on the First with any oomph.
Maybe if we had just given him a few more years he'd have got the trains running on time whether we were there or not......

Jeryk Motplowe is a 23 year old engineer and close friend to Thaffe Morhand. While dedicating much of his time as a repairman, he occasionally puts his def fingers to use in trimming the bangs of Twine residents.

Some doodles and sketches of my husband's WoL, Croissant (I think some of these sketches are approaching a year old).
She's got a Goobbue Sproutling named Gooby Doo that goes on adventures with her and eats Gooby Snacks. She dated trolley guy Jeryk for 20 minutes during Shadowbringers.

Day 10: Stable
Urianger stood before the inanimate Talos, a subtle gesture with his hand conjuring a suite of analytical magicks to probe the construct’s aetheric pathways and ascertain the reason for its slumber.
To his right, Johnny appeared to just be sizing it up with his eyes.
“And so our path bends towards weal. Had nothing such as this been found, our company may have needed resort to drastic measures, but with this intact specimen, our work will be trifling.”
Jeryk, the man from the trolley yard who’d led them to it, seemed hopeful. “What do you reckon is wrong with it?”
“Having dealt in my time primarily with the animation of less corporeal entities, it would not be accurate to describe myself as an expert in this field. However, arcane constructs such as these are not new to me, and therefore I believe-“
Johnny spoke up. “The core is busted, or missing. The golem needs a new heart.”
Urianger stopped mid-sentence and just stared at his companion for a second.
“Pray tell what lead you to this conclusion? I did not observe you utilizing any analytical divinations,” he said, rife with skepticism.
Johnny shrugged. “This is just the way this kind of thing always goes.”
Urianger fiercely disagreed to the notion that the situation would develop in this way merely because Johnny had observed such situations in the past, especially when his own observations suggested otherwise. Once he shared his findings with Jeryk, the situation should get back on track.
“…Pardon my objection, but do you have any evidence to support this hypothesis?”
Johnny looked the Talos up and down again. “Physical proof? Not really, it’s just intuition. Did you find out anything with your scan?”
Urianger nodded. “I did. The outermost layer of the Talos’ skin must be able to conduct aether efficiently, lest the construct fall victim to instabilities. Like any living creature, its aether must be kept inside for optimal use,” he began.
“Oh, so it’s the skin? That’s a relief; that’s probably much easier to fix than finding a new heart,” Johnny said, apparently abandoning his hunch. Urianger sighed with relief; the Warrior of Light was known to be obstinate about certain topics, so his willingness to abandon his hunch in favor of Urianger’s divinations was heartening.
“It is indeed. If a new aetherically-conductive material were found and coated over the Talos, I believe we will be operational.”
“Nice! Where can I get that?” Johnny said, eager to get to work.
Urianger pondered it for a moment. “The stone of the nearby debitage may be sufficient once ground down. Three ought to be more than enough.”
“Wait, the debitage like that thing over there?”
“The very same. Convenient, is it not?” Urianger said.
“Yeah… a little too convenient. I’m back to thinking it’s going to be the heart again.”
His companion’s adventurer’s instinct continue to baffle him, but he refrained from making a second objection.
“Mayhap.”
“Mayhaps,” Johnny echoed. “Alrighty, I’m off, see you both in a bit. I hope this works!”
Some time later…
“Strange… the Talos refuseth to stir. I fear its condition may be more dire than I initially surmised,” said Urianger, lowering the hand he had just channeled aether through. He cast a further divination, learning more about the pathways of aether in the construct and growing less and less pleased.
“So it was the core after all,” Jeryk mused.
“At risk of reiteration, I will state that the aetheric pathways in the Talos merely appeared blocked,” Urianger said, though his confidence began to wane as his sentence trailed on. There was also a small amount of ire that began to build as he noticed Johnny’s unearned smug expression from the corner of his eye.
“What’s wrong with it, then?” Johnny asked. The playful look on his face suggested that he already knew the answer. It was the look of somebody who was confident enough to bet their life on a conclusion they had come to out of sheer luck. There was no way in all seven hells that Johnny had figured it out with a glance, and not even a single divination or aetherological scan. Urianger refused to believe it.
He cast his attention back to the Talos, once more probing the inside with his diagnosis magicks. As the scope and source of the problem began to appear more clearly to him though, his heart began to sink.
“Hm?”
“I refuse to entertain this. You possesseth not the right to an ‘I told you so,’ when your original suggestion was of such a random and unreliable nature.”
“It wasn’t random,” Johnny said. “I’m telling you, it’s just always like this.”

🛑 Spoilers Under the Cut 🛑
My partner and I just got done running around in Shaaloani and holy shit.... I have to write down my feelings and bullet things I love. Cuz being southern I am a sucker for the 'Old West' setting.
Hearing western/American southern accents was a hoot and a half.
Dealing with a corrupt law enforcement, almost everyone having a firearm, and seeing all of the ceruleum wells is very on brand for the North America equivalent of Etheirys.
I love the choices they picked for the different over world mobs. Especially the normal fire based enemies all being blue to reflect the ceruleum mining prominent in the area.
The tumbleweed crabs are my favorite!
Indigenous coded Miqo'te tribe!
The pueblo style architecture in one of the settlements.
My partner's grandfather was indigenous, so seeing him get excited about the indigenous coded people and locations made me smile.
ALSO! Trans coded Erenville!!!
Seeing the Source counterparts for Magnus, Jeryk, and Thaffe got me a little misty eyed.
