Two Los Angeles mothers are at odds on opposite sides of California's embattled criminal justice system: one grieving the loss of her two sons and the other trying to get her conviction for killing them overturned.
Rebecca Grossman, a rich and powerful Los Angeles socialite, sped her Mercedes through a crosswalk and killed Mark Iskander, 11, and his 8-year-old brother, Jacob, as they were crossing the street with their mother and younger brother.
Nancy Iskander, a biotech executive, grabbed her son, Zachary, who was 5 at the time, and dove out of the way. But she and her youngest son witnessed the crash.
"We will continue to speak up until we see justice and see her pay for the murder of two little boys, because they could be anyone's kids," she told Fox News Digital. "They're not just my boys. They're just [an] innocent 11-year-old, an innocent 8-year-old in a crosswalk."
Grossman, 60, had prescription drugs and alcohol in her system at the time of the 2020 crash, prosecutors told Fox News Digital. Although she was married to a prominent Los Angeles surgeon, Dr. Peter Grossman, she was racing her boyfriend, former MLB pitcher Scott Erickson, home from a restaurant. Each of them were driving Mercedes-Benz SUVs above 70 mph.
Jurors found her guilty in February, but she has not yet been sentenced. Not only has she never expressed remorse, her "games" in court and from behind bars have antagonized the grieving family for years, Iskander said.
"She had many opportunities to show mercy, and she did not show any mercy on my family," Iskander told Fox News Digital. "In fact, she only showed hate – all sorts of hate in many, many ways – as if we're her No. 1 enemy in the world."
The Iskander family has accused Grossman of toying with the justice system throughout the process, appealing her charges to the state Supreme Court before trial and then in March attempting to tamper with the jury.
Deputy District Attorneys Ryan Gould and Jamie Castro sent jailhouse phone call transcripts to the court in March that allegedly showed Grossman violating a gag order on the case and openly discussing attempts to interfere with witnesses and influence the judge, FOX 11 Los Angeles reported at the time.
"It feels so unfair not only to lose the kids but also to find yourself in the middle of a fight and with a person who wants to hurt you as much as possible in the middle of it," Iskander said.
Adding insult to injury, Grossman hired defense attorney James Spertus to handle her post-conviction matters – another "game" that the Iskanders say is an attempt to sway the scales of justice in Grossman's favor. Spertus is a friend of the judge's, they say, and he is also representing the disgraced former deputy district attorney, Diana Teran, who is under indictment on 11 unrelated felony charges. She happens to be the former supervisor of the unit that prosecuted Grossman.
Rather than seek Spertus' removal from the case, Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon's office briefly removed the lead prosecutors instead, a move that caused widespread public backlash.
"It was heart-wrenching for us," Iskander told Fox News Digital. "It felt we were punished, or we were the victim of another one of her games."
Gascon's top deputy, Joseph Iniguez, backtracked on the move days later and said Gould and Castro would remain on the case, although the chain of command was transferred out of their division to one that hadn't been overseen by Teran.
Iskander said the family is very thankful for the move and believes the duo will do the best job in court.
"Them being not only familiar with the evidence but also the circumstances, and Mrs. Grossman's strategies into getting more delays or causing a conflict of interest, they are familiar with that," she told Fox News Digital. "And then they got to know Mark and Jacob through the years. It's been four years that we've been together. So, I feel like to hand it to someone who never worked on it before, at this point, it doesn't make any sense."
Grossman is due back in court Friday as part of a bid for a new trial. She faces up to 34 years in prison for her conviction on two counts of second-degree murder, vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run resulting in death.
While Spertus has alleged prosecutorial misconduct and is seeking a new trial, prosecutors are vying to have him removed from Grossman's defense due to his attorney-client relationship with Teran.
Spertus denied having any conflict of interest involving his representation of either party. He told Fox News Digital he expects the state attorney general's case against Teran to fail.
As for Iskander, she is hoping the case finally comes to a conclusion so she and her family can heal. As part of the process, she and her husband have become devoted to charity by founding an orphanage and a foster care nonprofit while raising money for scholarships for local children through the Mark and Jacob Iskander Foundation.
"A person killed two children. They didn't do anything wrong. She's a murderer," Iskander said. "It should be a straightforward process, right? And I mean, for society, it has to be a straightforward process."

Why Cubs feel a responsibility to not immediately cast aside Addison Russell
Why Cubs feel a responsibility to not immediately cast aside Addison Russell originally appeared on nbcsportschicago.com
CARLSBAD, Calif. - The Cubs still haven't made a determination on what to do with embattled shortstop Addison Russell.
It's now been more than a month since the Cubs' season abruptly ended and Russell was dealt a 40-game suspension by Major League Baseball for domestic violence.
Many fans would prefer the Cubs just get rid of Russell and move on, but it's not that simple for Theo Epstein and Co.
Once MLB's investigation into Melisa Reidy-Russell's allegations was completed in early October, the Cubs were then able to talk with Russell in detail and Epstein spoke directly to both the young shortstop and his ex-wife.
"I think we have an obligation to speak to everyone involved in the situation and to really engage with Addison," Epstein said Monday at the MLB GM meetings in Southern California. "This incident happened on our watch - he was one of our players and he's gonna serve his discipline for his behavior. Domestic violence is everyone's problem and this did happen on our watch and we have to be part of the solution.
"For us, it means prevention. It means trying to do everything we can as an organization to make sure this never happens again, so having everyone who interfaces with the players and their families trained professionally for detection and awareness and intervention. It's impossible to say we're gonna create an organization where there's never another episode of domestic violence ever again, but that has to be the goal and we're taking steps in that regard.
"Part of the solution also means - with respect to Addison - discipline and he's been handed his discipline and will serve it. I also think part of the solution *can* possibly include rehabilitation and reformation and taking steps to examine whether the individual is worth investment so he can grow. And so that this never happens again with him.
"So we're in that process. We have a robust mental skills department and - I don't want to get into specifics - but we're very engaged with Addy in trying to verify that he's serious about self-improvement and adding more stability to his life and to get to a point where we're confident something like this will never happen again.
"Everything remains an open question. We haven't made any determinations. The only determination we've made is that we need to be part of the solution, both from an organizational standpoint and in supporting the discipline and supporting and exploring a possible road to rehabilitation and improvement."
As part of the suspension, the league mandated Russell enter a treatment program and that process is still ongoing, Epstein said.
The investigation concluded the day after the Cubs season ended and Russell's suspension was announced mere minutes before Epstein's end-of-the-year press conference, where he stated the importance of the organization providing support for both Russell and his ex-wife.
Epstein and the Cubs feel a responsibility to be a part of the solution with regards to domestic violence even beyond this situation and are hoping to learn and instill better practices and procedures moving forward to support the player and his family.
They also feel a responsibility to support Russell and not just immediately cast him aside.
That's not to say Russell will absolutely be wearing a Cubs uniform in 2019, but there is a real possibility of a reunion - which likely would be an unpopular decision among the fanbase.
"Look, this happened on our watch and it's not like we signed a minor-league free agent and he demonstrated this behavior a month in and then you move on from him," Epstein said. "This is somebody who we acquired in Double-A and he grew up in large part in our farm system, too. And especially with a high-school kid, you're a big part of a player's development.
"We take credit when players grow up and experience great success on the field and off the field and we feel proud of being a part of that and playing a small role in that and providing the right kind of environment for that. So when a player has something in their life that goes the other direction or does something that you're not proud of, does that mean you should automatically cut bait and move on and have it be somebody else's problem or maybe just society's problem?
Story Continues
"Or do you explore the possibility of staying connected with that player with the hope of rehabilitation, including a lot of verification along the way. I think these are difficult things to wrestle with, but I'm not so sure the answer is simply to cast the player aside and hope that someone else performs that work or that that work take place at all. That's how I feel about it."
The Cubs have until Nov. 30 to decide whether they will tender a contract to Russell, who is under team control for another three seasons and would go into his second year of arbitration if offered a contract.
He has already served 12 games of the 40-game suspension, meaning he would miss at least the first month of 2019 regardless of what uniform he is wearing - if he's even with a team at all.

The scent of popcorn wafts through the living room. Assorted candies and snacks are spread out across the coffee table. You’ve loaded the sofa up with blankets and pillows for maximum comfort.
Is there anything better than a movie night?
I can think of one thing that upgrades the experience: When those movies you settle in to enjoy offer value beyond mere entertainment. I would guess I’m not alone in saying I’ve watched plenty of flicks that had a lasting impact on me.
In particular, I like watching stories that help me grow professionally, by providing me with perspective, applicable lessons, or simply inspiration.
These 9 films, in my opinion, all have something to offer for today’s sales pros. They cover a vast assortment of genres and time periods and subject matter, but at the end of the day, these are all movies about sales, one way or another.
9 Movies About Sales You Should Watch
Death of a Salesman
Based on the classic play by Arthur Miller, this movie was made for the small screen (it premiered on CBS in August of 1985) but offered Hollywood-caliber drama and performances (from Dustin Hoffman and John Malkovich, among others.)
As its name suggests, Death of a Salesman is not the most uplifting of affairs — its protagonist is a failed traveling salesman whose life more or less falls apart — but ultimately there are good takeaways here about setting realistic goals, and accepting ourselves for who we really are.
Money Quote: “Walk in with a big laugh. Don’t look worried. Start off with a couple of your good stories to lighten things up. It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it because personality always wins the day.” — Willy Loman
Glengarry Glen Ross
The early scene in which Blake, an arrogant hotshot sent from downtown to motivate a lagging collection of real estate salesmen, arrives and verbally berates the embattled team is unforgettable. Alec Baldwin’s vitriolic, profanity-laced takedown is riveting, hilarious, and heartbreaking all the same time. “Put that coffee down! Coffee’s for closers!” he barks at Shelley Levene (Jack Lemmon) as he meekly tries to pour a mug.
Levene is one of the classic salesman archetypes in cinema, personifying the pressure and rejection that can be incumbent to the profession. (The character became something of a pop-culture stereotype in and of itself.) The movie is a fun throwback to a bygone era, with salesmen dialing up prospects from phone booths and desperately yearning for that coveted stack of Glengarry leads. (If only they had Sales Navigator to generate their own!)
Money Quote: “A-B-C. A: Always, B: Be, C: Closing. Always be closing.” — Blake
The Big Kahuna
Most B2B salespeople know about the thrill of chasing that huge, game-changing deal. The one that makes your month, or even your year. That’s the focus here, with the titular “Big Kahuna” being the CEO of a large company who is targeted by a trio of industrial lubricant sales/marketing reps at a trade show.
The interplay between these three characters and the many reflective moments make this comedy a worthwhile view even beyond the laughs.
Money Quote: “It doesn’t matter whether you’re selling Jesus or Buddha or civil rights or ‘How to Make Money in Real Estate With No Money Down.’ That doesn’t make you a human being; it makes you a marketing rep. If you want to talk to somebody honestly, as a human being, ask him about his kids. Find out what his dreams are — just to find out, for no other reason. Because as soon as you lay your hands on a conversation to steer it, it’s not a conversation anymore; it’s a pitch. And you’re not a human being; you’re a marketing rep.” — Phil Cooper
The Pursuit of Happiness
A career in sales can be a struggle, requiring us to look deep within ourselves. No film epitomizes this truth better than The Pursuit of Happiness, in which Will Smith plays a medical equipment salesman named Chris Gardner who finds himself homeless after a run of bad luck. He tries to dig his way out of destitution and provide a better life for his son.
Gardner’s sad plight turns into an uplifting resurgence as he employs a variety of savvy sales tactics during an unpaid internship at a brokerage firm, focusing on the highest-value prospects and relying on his strong interpersonal skills. Through impressive performance, he earns a paying job and eventually starts his own successful company. I dare you to watch this film and not feel utterly inspired.
Money Quote: “Walk that walk and go forward all the time. Don’t just talk that talk, walk it and go forward. Also, the walk didn’t have to be long strides; baby steps counted too. Go forward.” — Chris Gardner
The Wolf of Wall Street
Here we have the flip side of the coin. Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jordan Belfort rises from humble beginnings to Wall Street kingpin thanks to his ability to execute (and teach) the hard sell. Once he gets on the phone, his persuasive abilities are divine as he convincingly paints worthless stocks as can’t-miss opportunities.
Belfort quickly climbs the ladder as he builds his company Stratton Oakmont into a powerhouse, all while he spirals out of control amidst drugs and debauchery, and things eventually unravel in rather spectacular fashion.
Money Quote: “The only thing standing between you and your goal is the [BS] story you keep telling yourself as to why you can’t achieve it.” — Jordan Belfort
Boiler Room
Like Wolf of Wall Street, Boiler Room depicts aggressive brokers peddling junk stocks with inflated promises in search of hefty commissions, albeit in a very different style. Compared to most other movies listed here, this one takes a somewhat more serious look at the impact and consequences of dishonest sales tactics.
Money Quote: “There is no such thing as a no-sale call. A sale is made on every call you make. Either you sell the client some stock or he sells you a reason he can’t. Either way, a sale is made, the only question is who is gonna close? You or him?” — Jim Young
Jerry Maguire
After dramatically breaking off from his sports agency to go it alone, Maguire (played by Tom Cruise) has to sell himself to clients to remain viable. The decision that sent him down this path is one that resonates in today’s digital sales world: quality over quantity. He wanted to work with fewer clients in order to deliver better and more personalized service.
Ultimately, Maguire is only able to convince one client to stay with him at his new solo venture, but the strong relationship he builds with Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.) eventually gets noticed by others, opening new opportunities and saving his career.
Money Quote: “The key to this business is personal relationships.” — Dicky Fox
Moneyball
Sticking in the sports realm, we come to the story of Billy Beane (Brad Pitt), who transformed the way baseball front offices operate with his innovative approach as Oakland A’s general manager back in the early 2000s. This film (based on a book of the same name) shows how Beane built a small-market contender by identifying and capitalizing on market inefficiencies. In this case, his data-driven approach points him toward on-base percentage as an undervalued asset.
You are (probably) not in the business of constructing an MLB roster, but the takeaway for sellers is this: What’s your market inefficiency? Where is the untapped opportunity in your space that competing salespeople are overlooking?
Beane’s attempts to sway traditional mindsets in the organization toward a new, unfamiliar way of thinking might help inspire any sales pro who faces a firmly established status quo.
Money Quote: “We are card counters at the blackjack table. And we’re gonna turn the odds on the casino.” — Billy Beane
A Christmas Story
Okay, this one’s a little outside the box. You won’t find this cherished holiday staple on many “Best Sales Movie” lists, because it’s not about sales in any way. Or is it?
Throughout the entire movie, young Raphie is trying to sell his parents on the Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle that he so desires, playing up the benefits (a compass in the stock, and this thing that tells time) while downplaying the widespread objections (one is liable to shoot his eye out). Eventually, his resolve wins out.
It’s an epic tale of tenacity and persistence.
Money Quote: “It was a classic, mother BB-gun block. ‘You’ll shoot your eye out!’ That deadly phrase, honored many times by hundreds of mothers, was not surmountable by any means known to Kid-dom, but such was my mania, my desire for a Red Ryder carbine, that I immediately began to rebuild the dike.” — Ralphie Parker
Watch and Learn
Not all of these movies cast the sales profession in the best light. Few of them tie directly to the work we do today of engaging prospects and building relationships in the digital space. But as you watch these heralded classics, you’re bound to come away with some insight and food for thought.
At the very least, you’ll have a stomach full of popcorn and candy. Now there’s an easy sell.

Why Cubs feel a responsibility to not immediately cast aside Addison Russell

The Cubs have until Nov. 30 to decide whether they will tender a contract to Russell, who is under team control for another three seasons and would go into his second year of arbitration if offered a contract.
He has already served 12 games of the 40-game suspension, meaning he would miss at least the first month of 2019 regardless of what uniform he is wearing - if he's even with a team at all.

Aaron Nola’s Excellent Start Not Enough to Stop Phillies’ Skid
It was Chase Utley Retirement Night and what a ceremony it was. There were loud ovations and old friends back in town on a picturesque night at Citizens Bank Park to celebrate the man. Chase even made one fan’s lifelong dream come true. Unfortunately for the Phillies, not even a packed house and Utley’s presence could wash away the stench emanating from this team right now. The Phillies wasted Aaron Nola’s best effort of the season while once again failing to hit in a disheartening 2-1 loss to the lowly Miami Marlins. They have now lost 9 of their last 11 games and continue to fade just as summer officially gets underway.
Lots of eyebrows were raised before the game when Kapler rolled out a lineup that featured Nola hitting eighth ahead of Roman Quinn. Obviously, the Phillies only produced one run tonight–the fourth time in their last five games that they have scored two runs or less–so it’s easy to say Kapler’s decision didn’t work. I want to take a closer look at that decision because I think it serves as a microcosm of how Kapler is unfairly perceived right now.
Let’s start in the second inning when Scott Kingery kickstarted a two-out rally by lacing a double off of the left field fence. The Marlins responded by issuing an intentional walk to Cesar Hernandez in order to get to Nola, who again, was hitting eighth. It didn’t take long for that Gabe Kapler decision to backfire. The embattled Phillies manager explained prior to the game that he wanted to put Quinn’s speed in front of Bryce Harper and Rhys Hoskins with the hope that mix would jump-start a sluggish offense. Instead, that move cost the Phillies a prime scoring opportunity early. Nola, who entered the game with a .038 batting average, did rip a 2-1 fastball with a 93 mph exit velo to right field, but Cesar Puello had it played perfectly. It has just been that kind of month for Kapler and that kind of season for Nola.
Kapler was redeemed an inning later, sort of, when Quinn doubled to lead off the third. Harper followed with a hard base-hit to center that put runners on the corners with nobody out. After Hoskins flew out to shallow center, failing to score Quinn, Jay Bruce struck out, but the Phillies executed a double steal with Harper swiping second and Quinn taking home to tie the game. With runs at a premium for this lineup right now, this is one way to do it:

A good base running play! Progress.
In the fourth inning, it appeared Nola would again end the inning, this time with a runner on first, but Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara lost command and walked Nola on a 3-2 fastball before plunking Quinn to load the bases. That brought Harper to the plate in a big spot, but he flew out on the first pitch to end the inning.
That brings us to the ninth when Quinn, Harper, and Hoskins would get one last crack at it. Quinn struck out, and Harper flew out to the deepest part of the park before Hoskins singled with two outs to bring up Jay Bruce, who weakly flew out to end the game.
Yup. Let’s stop right here.
This is exactly where people place too much blame on Kapler. “I don’t like hitting the pitcher eighth. It’s bullshit. Stop trying to reinvent the wheel.” Stuff like this gets said all of the time, and when you look up at the scoreboard and see one run, it’s easy to kill the manager–but for what? Kapler gets his $330 million guy to the plate in both the third and the fourth innings with at least one runner in scoring position. What the manager has to do is put his lineup in position to produce runs and twice early in this game the Phillies had favorable opportunities to do it. They just didn’t get it done.
Is it on Kapler that Hoskins and Bruce struck out in the third with a runner on third and less than two outs, or that Harper couldn’t deliver in the fourth when he had a pitch to hit? Is it on him that by the time Sean Rodriguez struck out to end a threat in the eighth, the Phillies were 2 for 12 with RISP on the night, making them an abysmal 6 for their last 40 dating back to last Sunday afternoon? No. No. And no. Simply put, the Phillies best players:
Had opportunities to do damage early
Didn’t do it
Need to start carrying this team out of a hellacious slump, helping mask the obvious deficiencies at the bottom of the roster
Weighing in on Segura
Another ugly night for Jean Segura, who somewhat surprisingly received only a smattering of boos early in the evening. I guess most of the 44,000+ in attendance tonight weren’t voting in that WIP Morning Show poll that said they were going to give ’em hell tonight. We will get to his lack of hustle in a minute, but first let’s talk about what he’s doing at the plate right now. Segura ended play on May 31 hitting .301 with an .809 OPS, but he’s 13 for 71 (.183) in June. As for his lack of hustle the other night, yeah, it was bullshit. He absolutely should’ve been on second base at the start of Wednesday night’s game against Washington, and it’s pretty baffling that in light of the recent focus placed on his hustle lately that he wasn’t. Bench him, don’t bench him, whatever. That debate makes for good talk radio fodder and fire-ass columns, but it doesn’t encapsulate the Phillies’ actual issues, which are that they’re just not very good right now. Mind you, we’re getting close to removing the “right now” qualifier from that statement. They just might not be very good.
Nola’s Night
It’s hard to argue that Nola didn’t have a good night. His line: 8 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 10 K
He threw 82 of his 107 pitches for strikes in what was his 10th career double-digit strikeout game, and he did what he was supposed to do for much of the night against a Marlins offense that entered the night 29th in runs scored and dead last in OPS. This being 2019 Aaron Nola and all, that performance, somehow, wasn’t enough.
Nola’s first mistake came in the second inning when Bryan Holaday homered to open the scoring. It was the 14th homer surrendered by Nola this season in only 88 innings pitched. Comparatively, he gave up only 17 homers in 212.1 IP last season.
In the sixth inning, Nola hit Brian Anderson to start the inning and Starlin Castro followed by perfectly executing a hit and run with a ground ball through the vacated second base hole. Cesar Puello hit a slow roller to third, and it momentarily appeared Kingery had a play on Anderson at the plate, but he juggled the transfer and the error gave the Marlins a 2-1 lead. This, of course, would be the winning run.

I know that Kingery, who happens to be like one of two guys in this lineup who doesn’t make me want to gouge my eyes out when he comes to the plate right now, has been moved back and forth between center and third, but that’s a play that has to be made.
Nola escaped further damage after striking out JT Riddle and Castro forgot the outs and was doubled up at second on a fly ball to left field. He would retired seven of the last eight batters he faced to get through eight innings for the first time this season.
Up Next
Get excited, Phils fans!
Vince Velasquez will get the ball on Saturday afternoon, and it will be Enyel De Los Santos on Sunday in the finale. Velasquez was ineffective last Sunday in his return to the rotation. He put the Phillies in an early first inning 3-0 hole and couldn’t make it out of the third. In seven starts this season, Velasquez has completed six innings only once. For those wondering, this probably won’t be his last start. It sure seemed like Kapler is looking for Velasquez to hammer down the rotation’s final spot, telling reporters that he “has an opportunity to take control” of it, while also noting Velasquez has the most upside. This won’t be an “opener” deal either. Kapler believes Velasquez is stretched out enough to go through the Marlins lineup a couple of times.
From this perspective, that’s probably true, although that’s less of a ringing endorsement as much as it is an indictment of the Phillies’ rotation options.

Listen to the Ear-Splitting Home Radio Call of Brayden Point’s Fifth-Overtime Game-Winner
Listen to the radio and television calls of Brayden Point’s goal that ended the fourth longest game in NHL history.
Five overtimes!
There were no fans to head for the exits early when the Lightning and Blue Jackets played
one of the longest games in NHL history yesterday afternoon (and night).
Tampa Bay and Columbus played 90 minutes and 27 seconds of extra time, the fourth longest game the league has ever seen. The game started at 3 p.m. ET and didn’t end until 9:23. It went on for so long that the Bruins-Hurricanes game previously scheduled for 8 p.m. had to be pushed back to the morning.
Blue Jackets goalie Joonas Korpisalo made an NHL-record 85 saves but couldn’t stop Brayden Point’s wrister from the high slot more than halfway through the fifth overtime.
It was a dramatic goal and it produced some fantastic commentary from the guys calling the game on TV and radio.
Here’s how it sounded with John Forslund on the call for NBCSN.
youtube
Rick Peckham handles the play-by-play duties for the Lightning on Fox Sports Sun and sounded like he was in disbelief when Point’s shot hit the back of the net.
youtube
Radio play-by-play man Dave Mishkin definitely believed what he saw, though. Mishkin, who handles the Bolts’ broadcasts on WFLA, nearly blew his mic out screaming, “Scores! Scores! Scores!”
(I couldn’t find Columbus radio broadcaster Bob McElligott’s or Fox Sports Columbus play-by-play announcer Jeff Rimer’s calls of the goal, so please send them my way if you come across them.)
The game was the NHL’s longest in 20 years, 94 seconds shorter than a Flyers-Penguins conference semifinal game from May 4, 2000. The two longest games in league history were played in 1933 and 1936, more than two decades before the first goalie wore a mask full-time. So Point’s goal was a truly historic moment that we’ll be seeing for decades to come. With any luck, it’ll be Mishkin’s frantic call that lives on as the preferred historical record of Point’s goal. ESPN.com’s game recap page is already using the audio of Mishkin’s call over NBCSN’s video feed.

Setting sights on spring training, Jose Altuve confident embattled Astros will 'be in World Series'

Setting sights on spring training, Jose Altuve confident embattled Astros will 'be in World Series'
HOUSTON — A week filled with fines, suspensions, firings and impromptu news conferences as a result of their sign-stealing scandal ended awkwardly in Houston on Saturday, with the Astros meeting and greeting fans and media at their annual winter festival.
Two of the team’s biggest stars — Jose Altuve and Alex Bregman — took center stage: one for his unfazed confidence, the other for his terse tone and tenor.
2 Related
Houston second baseman Jose Altuve said the Astros will be in the World Series again, while pushing back on the idea that the team’s cheating went beyond the sign-stealing detailed in MLB’s report earlier this week.
“Believe me, in the end of the year, everything will be fine,” he said. “We’re going to be in the World Series again. People don’t believe it, we will. We will. We made it last year, we were one game away of winning it all.”
Altuve was the American League MVP in 2017, and since the sign-stealing scandal broke, some have questioned whether he deserved the award. In recent days, he has also been accused of wearing an electronic device under his jersey that could alert him of certain pitches, which he vehemently denies.
“You know, we all know that some people made that up,” he said. “And like I said, the best thing to happen to me was the MLB investigate that and they didn’t find something.”
While Altuve didn’t have a problem answering numerous questions about the scandal, Bregman, Houston’s third baseman, refused repeated attempts by reporters to get him to address what happened and kept repeating variations of the same phrase.
“The commissioner made his report, made his decision, and the Astros made their decision,” he said. “And I have no further comment on it.”
After being pressed on if he plans to discuss the sign-stealing in the future, Bregman finally gave an answer that didn’t seemed as rehearsed. “I think in the 2020 year,” he said, “our actions will speak louder than our words.
Altuve and Bregman were the only two stars at FanFest who were part of the 2017 championship team. Many of the other big names who helped the Astros win their first title — including World Series MVP George Springer, ace Justin Verlander, who was the American League Championship Series MVP, and shortstop Carlos Correa — did not attend the daylong event at which fans interact with players.
Meanwhile, Altuve was consistent is spinning the storyline forward. With spring training less than a month away, he wants the focus on baseball.
“I have two options. One is cry, and one is go down and play the game and [perform] and help my team,” he said. “And you know what one I am going to do.”
MLB’s investigation of Houston began after former Astros pitcher Mike Fiers, who played for Oakland last season, told The Athletic about the team’s scheme to steal signs.
Houston manager AJ Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow were suspended for a year by MLB commissioner Rob Manfred on Monday after he found illicit use of electronics to steal signs during the Astros’ run to the 2017 World Series championship and again during the 2018 season. Team owner Jim Crane then fired both Hinch and Luhnow. Manager Alex Cora left the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday after the report identified him as the ringleader of the sign-stealing scheme when he was the bench coach for the Astros in 2017.
The Astros were fined $5 million, which is the maximum allowed under the Major League Constitution, and must forfeit their next two first- and second-round amateur draft picks.
The investigation found that the Astros used the video feed from a center-field camera to see and decode the opposing catcher’s signs. Players banged on a trash can to signal to batters what was coming, believing it would improve the batter’s odds of getting a hit.
“It’s a tough situation, and as a team, we have to stay together and go through this as a team like we’ve been doing, always,” Altuve said. “We have to talk about it at spring training and try not to let things in the past distract us for next year.”
