Crack Fic! Where Everyone thinks Merlin is the reasonable one.

Everyone loves Merlin and thinks he’s the sweetest person, who couldn’t hurt a fly. So, they’re all annoyed when they see how Arthur treats him. The King is constantly overloading his manservant with work, ordering him to do massive tasks and coming up with ridiculous excuses to keep Merlin from taking a break. So, the knights and others constantly try to find ways to pull Merlin away from Arthur’s side and give him a break but Arthur always finds a way to mess up their plans.

Gwen and the other maids sometimes try to help Merlin with his chores

Gwen: Arthur you can’t actually expect Merlin to clean the entire throne room by himself

Arthur: *shrugs* Yes. I’m hardly asking him much

Gwen: It usually takes five maids to thoroughly clean the throne room. It’s ridiculous to ask one person to do so much work and then, to place Lancelot as a guard to make sure none of us can help him. 

Arthur: Lancelot wouldn’t have to guard anything if you all weren’t so ready to disobey my orders. I said Merlin will clean the throne room ALONE and that is final

Gwen: I never knew you could be such a cruel person and to Merlin of all people

*Gwen storms off*

Gwaine, Leon, Percival, Elyan and some of the other knights try to steal Merlin away to the tavern to relax

Gwaine: Come on Princess. I’m sure you can survive one night without Merlin 

*Gwaine tries to pull Merlin to their side but Arthur grabs hold of Merlin and pulls him back*

Arthur: Need I remind you, Merlin is my manservant and doesn’t have time to play around. He still has very important duties to complete

Elyan: What could he possibly have to do at this time? Most servants have gone home for the day?

Arthur: Well Merlin is the King’s manservant as I keep reminding you and still have very important things to do

Gwaine: Like what?

Arthur: *pauses* For one, he needs to clean the mess he made in the closet

The knights: *trying to process the bullshit Arthur just told them* 

Arthur: *crossing his arms, 100% serious, daring them to challenge him*

Merlin: It’s fine guys really, probably next time *pulling Arthur and himself back into Arthur’s chambers and locking the door*

Or when something terrible happens to Merlin like the time he got kidnapped and everyone went into full panic

Arthur: *staring hard at Lance* Merlin’s been kidnapped?

Elyan: They ambushed us out of nowhere and before we knew it they were off with him.

Leon: Don’t worry sire, I’ll gather a search party immediately to have him found.

Gwaine: We’ll make them sorry they ever thought to mess with our Merlin

Arthur: *holding up a finger and turning to Lance again* Merlin’s been kidnapped?

Lance: ..... That is the story

Gwaine: Princess, have you not been listening. We need to hurry every second counts. 

Arthur: I heard, just wondering why he couldn’t have chosen a better day to get himself kidnapped

*Everyone gawks at Arthur in disbelief*

Basically, everyone thinks that Arthur doesn’t appreciate Merlin and that their cinnamon roll deserves better and formed a protection squad to help Merlin get the treatment he deserves.

Meanwhile in Reality....

Arthur knows about Merlin’s magic. He is fully aware of how powerful Merlin is and finally sees that his manservant isn’t an idiot. He’s just a bloody madman.

===In the throne room=== 

*Arthur and Merlin both staring at a dark purple swirling vortex on the floor*

Arthur: *takes a deep breath* Merlin, why is there a hole in my throne room?

Merlin: Well, it's not a hole. It’s a sort of gateway to the dark dimension.

Arthur: Oh, okay. Why is there a gateway to the dark dimension in my throne room?

Merlin: ..... I can fix it

Lancelot: Arthur, I heard you- *looks down at the menacing purple gateway on the floor and then back to Arthur and Merlin*

===After Gwaine, Elyan and Percival tried to take Merlin out for drinks===

Merlin: You know we both could use a break. I am a bit hungry. Been a while since I had a drink too

Arthur: Well maybe, we can join them after you explain why my Uncle is tied up in my closet

*Arthur opens his closet doors revealing a tied-up and gagged Agravaine making muffled noise*

Merlin: You told me to get evidence that he was working with Morgana

Arthur: And your solution to that was to kidnap him?

Merlin: What better way to hear it than from the man himself? 

Arthur: What’s going to happen when people realize he’s missing

Merlin: Don’t worry, one memory wipe spell and he’ll be back tomorrow in his chambers like nothing ever happened

Arthur: You told me those spells were dangerous

Merlin: *laughs* Well, yeah, I’m not using it on us

Agravaine: *making muffled and panicked pleads to Arthur*

Lancelot: Sorry, Arthur, Gaius told me that Merlin needed m- *sees a tied-up Agravaine* 

Lancelot: *nods* I’ll go stand guard

Rugby Champion/Nerd AU

- Probably a classic, I'd be surprised if ao3 wasn't plenty of it.

- Of course Arthur is Captain of the rugby team and of course Merlin is the guy sitting in the library all day.

- Don't ask me how they meet don't ask me how they fall in love, they just do

- Arthur's father is the school's principal

- And for this reason there's some people hating on Arthur cause they believe he has privileges

- Spoiler: he doesn't (or denies any of it when his father offers some) but due to this he finds hard to trust people

- Hence he trusts only his teammates aka true friends aka the squad!

- And Merlin of course

- Literally Heartstopper but make it #merthur with gay! Merlin and #bi-and-still-in-the-closet Arthur

Musicians AU

- Merlin goes to a public school and no one knows he's literally a world wide known classic musician

- Idk how don't ask

- Arthur is like the popular guy who plays guitar and all girls love him yadda yadda

- Idk what I was going for with this but IMAGINE WHEN THEY FIND OUT

- Imagine this fragile boi all cute smiles and sassy remarks and Arthur goes into protective mode cause he develops a crush-

And like, Arthur has a rock band so they look cool and they don't fear anyone in case Merlin gets bullied or something

And then they see him, for the first time-

Wearing a black/navy blue suit that costs thousand of dollars, walking in this giant golden opera with royal red drapes-

And he starts playing the piano for all these rich people and he's absolutely phenomenal

And suddenly Merlin fears Arthur won't be friends with him anymore or he'll fear he's gonna think Merlin is too "marvelous" to enjoy their little rock band

- But in reality Merlin loves them and he loves Arthur and Arthur honestly can't look at Merlin and see any other man than the guy he's been teasing and has argued with for all this time,

- aaand I don't know where I wanted to go with this as well lmao

the biggest reason i havent posted anything here is that whenever i think abt the merlin characters n what not is an modern au, where they work in a place kinda like supergirl? like an undercover organization that deals with supernatural/magic cases n what not. it has several branches, and the one that uther supervises and that arthur, gwen, morgana, the knights, gaius and others work at is more a hands on deck, action packed situation where they deal with cases that need physical force or neutralization n shit like that. they used to be able to just murder any magic being without question (kinda like how cops handle black ppl in america, yknow, no questions just shoot), but now theyre advised against it, much to uther’s chagrin. even tho he is the boss and this branch is the original, this is a democracy so. he also has to abide certain rules.

this change kinda happened because of merlin, because him n uther have met even before merlin n arthur did. but more on that later.

in present times, where the universe is at, merlin is very antisocial n kinda serious. he’s 26 or up, so think season 5. he’s very strange and off-putting (hehe reference), and arthur actively hates him, while the others dont rly feel that strongly abt merlin but still keep their distance. other ppl also dont like merlin because he is barely there but still gets jobs and gets paid. everyone else needs to hand in reports and attend meetings, go to classes if necessary, go rest while others can go n work. merlin doesnt do any of that, may or may not do a job uther assigns him, and if he does do a job he doesnt stay a minute longer. arthur seems merlin as this guy who thinks he’s better than everyone just because he’s a warlock and very powerful, blah blah blah. in fact, when he refers to merlin as he coworker, merlin denies it and says he doesnt work with arthur, or anyone in uther’s branch. it angers him to no end.

merlin’s files of his work and past in the branch are also very sealed tight, no matter how good elyan is at hacking. he tells them it must be magic as well, tho he knows tech magic isn’t merlin’s thing so someone else must be protecting him. it only makes merlin look more suspicious.

everything comes to light one day when gwen overhears merlin n uther screaming at each other in uther’s office and quickly gets arthur. the first thing they hear when the squad enters the scene is merlin screaming at uther’s face “if you even so much as speak to them, speak about them, or even think about them, i will skin you alive myself, no magic involved” very disturbing, very uuuhhhh where’s the context yknow, so while arthur joins in on the screaming because thats his father getting yelled at while the others watch with different levels of amusement (max amusement being morgana, least amusement being gwen) a lot of things become clear

1) merlin doesnt, in fact, work there. uther tells arthur himself that merlin is under no contract, no obligation to show up at any jobs. merlin sometimes does because of certain debts and other personal matter concerning the old branch where he used to work at, that is more about helping and nurturing troubled magic users, a lot of them coming from uther’s cases (it’s all very organized n shit). uther shows that he respects merlin a lot actually, which leaves arthur very confused, until...

2) merlin is the reason why magic beings aren’t killed anymore in uther’s branch because he was able to summon Ygraine’s spirit, with the help of his old boss. after getting absolutely wrecked emotionally n also getting a lecture from ygraine for how uther is treating magic beings, uther gets to work on making it all better, because that is his wife and also she may haunt him if he doesnt do as she please. summoning a spirit did take a lot of energy from merlin, seeing as he did this several times for uther to re manage the branch like his wife may want to. uther feels indebted to him in this way. merlin offers to summon arthurs mother as well if he wishes to, despite the costs. now it leaves the rest of the context to get to...

3) merlin has adopted 3 girls with unusual magical abilities, that he befriended when they were 8/9 and he was 16. because of certain conditions, he had to let them in the care of uther’s organization, before they were separated. he put them exclusively under his uncle’s care, gaius, while he had a lot of things to work through himself and was a danger to them, this at the age of 18. around 20/21, merlin is much better (also uther’s organization starts to separate) and can afford his own apartment for him and the girls to all live in, and from then on (because this kinda job pays very well) cared for them and paid their livings expenses as if they were his own daughters, even tho the age diff is more like siblings. uther is interested in having them working for him cuz theyre all very smart, talented, and powerful, all personally trained by merlin himself. merlin does not want that. none of the girls want it either, they’d probably want to kill uther, because...

4) at the start, when merlin first came under uther’s “care”, he got experimented on, for around 3 months. after knowing this, Alice, the future boss of merlin, the boss of the first branch that separated form uther to help magic beings instead of killing them, took merlin under her care. from then on out, she became his therapist, from 18 to 26 and onwards. they’re great friends and he keeps trying to get her n gaius together but they refuse (merlin doesnt know that they have in fact met before n have had a relationship but it fell off cuz gaius was uther’s friend and alice could never like that). so now that they know what the context what about, the unbridled hatred merlin has for uther, uther’s weird but respectful views of merlin and merlin’s position in the branch, now they all have one last question. what the fuck does merlin do then, if his job is not on the branch? well...

5) he’s a teacher. do you know mildred hubble? yh he teaches that class. yeah. he’s suffering. he also teaches some other girls but thats more of part time classes for them because they have other shit to do, like school. this is baffling to everybody because what the fuck. your main job is an elementary magic teacher, n your side hustle is... an undercover organization not influenced by the government?? what???

so yh this universe is just pure crack, very self-indulgent n shit, as per usual

so, first of all, when arthur is not around to call the shots, someone has to take the helm

and, leon (who feels he holds the single brain cell of the group), is the one to take charge

BUT, he’s not the only one

lancelot, who was so eager to be a knight and have importance™ also wants to take the wheel

so they both start to give orders at once

and that is when leon (the most polite of the group) lets lancelot speak

and that is also when lancelot (the most noble of the group) lets leon speak

“you can go—”

“i’ll let you—”

“i wouldn’t want to—”

“it’s really not a problem—”

and in the end elyan just sighs and directs everyone

gwaine finds it very funny and percival is eternally grateful

the sad thing is, this wouldn’t be a problem for long.

but for a few times afterward, leon would wait for lancelot to say something - to stop him mid sentence.

he wasn’t there.

now, speaking of gwaine and percival...

these two are  c o n s t a n t l y  trying to show up one another

it all stemmed from lancelot’s comment, a while back, asking leon which one he thought was stronger - percival or gwaine

lancelot bet on percival

leon figured gwaine

elyan wagered that arthur could take them both

lancelot and leon tilted their heads and narrowed their eyes

“nah.”

arthur overheard them

“hey!”

so now the two of them try to outdrink each other

they try to see how many people they can ‘save’

they spar a lot

elyan said they should arm wrestle, but gwaine took one look at percival’s arms and said it wasn’t “a true test of strength”

percival and gwaine are definitely the one’s who tease each other way too much

leon and elyan just watch them, rolling their eyes

oh, and leon and lancelot were vvv close before lancelot sacrificed himself for the king

arthur knew how close they were, and to this day he still feels guilty when he looks at leon

they first became friends when lancelot became a knight the first time, when he lied about his identity and whatnot

and when he comes back leon is like !!! friend !!!!

they both religiously drink their respect arthur juice

but they also know that arthur is an idiot and the only one who can save him is merlin

which reminds me that all the knights just love merlin???

like,  c l e a r l y  gwaine, lancelot, and leon do

but elyan has heard so much about merlin from gwen? and merlin has saved gwen how many times? immediate respect.

and at first percival was like,,, who is this skinny, sarcastic servant that follows arthur around like his shadow???

but then he really loves how sassy merlin can be, despite caring so much, and he’s just like,,, “oh. it makes sense.”

also,,, the knights totally ship merthur you cannot convince me otherwise

but let’s not forget leon and elyan’s relationship!!!!

they were childhood friends and are honestly thicker than thieves

leon can always anticipate what elyan is going to do in battle

elyan can practically read leon’s thoughts during training

and for those ‘???’ or exasperated thoughts that leon has, elyan voices them

he is the bluntness to leon’s softness

and elyan also has a lot of street smarts that leon most likely lacks

leon is easily the most sheltered of all the knights, and sometimes it shows

gwaine will just laugh, and elyan will have to explain things in detail while leon has the shocked pikachu face

and since i’m talking about elyan,,, how about elyan and percival

these two are so in love ohmygod

if there was ever a dyanamic duo, it’s these two

elyan is the strategist and percival is the force

but percival also has so much heart???? and elyan loves it because it reminds him so much of gwen and his father???

these two together just make me very happy and pleased

also,,,, percival gives the best hugs

he is the only one that can hug elyan, and it’s so tender

gwaine is constantly giving percival hugs

he loves to make suggestive comments about percival’s arms just to watch elyan seethe, convince me otherwise

leon will 10/10 let percival give him a hug after a long day

leon will also give the knights kisses on the cheeks if they ever get close enough

elyan pretends to hate affection,,, but sometimes he needs it

he’s definitely the emo boi™ out of the bunch, and tries really hard to prove it.

but he’s been alone for so long and really, he craves affection. pls give it to him.

after elyan’s death, leon is really ripped up

he just looses so many people he cares about??? why is no one talking about how heavy the burden on his shoulders is???

gwaine is uncharacteristically quiet and takes them all out to go drinking

percival is also really upset because his whole thing is that he’s the strong, protector type.

and he couldn’t protect elyan

and he won’t be able to protect gwaine either...

which leads me to talk about arthur and gwaine’s death

because the whole squad really has to go, huh?

it hurts that the two softest knights are the ones who have to suffer the death of so many others

they were never the two closest, but both of them really lean on one another because they are all they have left

leon is so torn up,,, he’s been here the longest and he has watched everyone he’s ever grown close to die...

and percival just gives him all the hugs in the world, teary eyed

the two of them definitely cry together

and they talk about the good old days - before arthur died, before gwaine died, before elyan died, before lancelot died...

when they were all sitting at that first round table, some of them strangers, others of them acquaintances, all of them brothers

1. i’m not sure how popular it is, but i’ve seen a bunch of shipping for merlin and morgana and i just can’t get into that

2. gaius and uther, there are people for it, i don’t get it and i am scared

3. i think it would be fun to be percival because i’d have cool friends and muscles

4. i’d have merlin tell morgana about his magic and they become secret magic bros defending camelot. i feel like that would have a kind of domino affect on the rest of the show and maybe life would be a little better for them all.

5. that angry druid dude(i feel bad for forgetting his name) in the beginning of season five, the idea of a bunch of druids getting fed up and becoming an angry rebellious group is fascinating. because if there’s an angry splinter group, are there other splinter groups? good ones, bad ones, neutral ones? i want to know the politics of the magical community in post-purge albion

6. i’m not sure, honestly. maybe leon and elyan? but i can be a little shit like gwaine under the right circumstances. i try to be as kind and loyal as lancelot. i have a very blurry window into my own personality, i mostly depend on others to tell me what i come across as because i always think i’m worse than i am.

7. the show kinda sucked sometimes, but the characters were amazing and it’s very sad that the writers wasted them. i don’t think that’s an unpopular opinion though.

10. this was gonna be a small headcanon but it got away from me. merlin and his splinter group of druids and other magic users he’s become bros with and magic allies that sabotage attempts from camelot to hurt peaceful magic users, generally protects and helps magic users and creatures, and defends camelot/arthur from threats. morgana is a member and helps them identify threats before they can complete their fiendish plans. arthur and the knights have several run ins with these masked crusaders and even though they fought the first few times they met, the group never seriously hurt the knights and avoided conflict with them. at this point gwaine is kinda friends with one and the knights have a begrudging respect(which quickly loses the begrudging part) for them. arthur talks a little with their leader, some Emrys guy, while they fight bandits or invaders back to back. one day the masked squad (i can’t pick a name for the group, something like graycloaks? idk) gets really hurt, it’s a big loss and the masks come off. arthur and the knights see “oh shit it’s merlin” and they have to stay out in the woods healing the magic squad since they’re too injured to move and while they heal up arthur and the knights get a start on fully accepting magic and healing their relationships and making real friendships with the rest of the magic squad. when they get back to camelot arthur has a new respect for merlin and he falls in love and with no worries about lies in their relationship, merlin accepts that he’s in love with arthur and they do some awkward fumbling around each other before they finally confess and they’re together. i know i mentioned them as a splinter group but i’d like to think this takes place after the season three finale and lancelot never dies and he and gwen are happy together. i may actually write this fic, who knows.

The episode is set after Merlin’s magic reveal. Merlin has just defeated an evil sorceress attacking the squad.

None of the knights see what happened, but they all freeze as they see Merlin drop.

Was it a curse from the sorceress? Was it an overuse of his powers? Was he somehow injured? What should they do???

Lancelot starts chest compressions despite the fact that Merlin has a normal pulse and is entirely breathing on his own, but a bitch ain’t taking chances.

Elyan and Leon have no fucking clue what supplies is needed but they’ve seen Merlin use herbs so goddamit they’re gonna collect every herb in the fucking forest.

Gwaine is wailing like a widow and tearing at his hair like the beautiful ride or die bastard he is.

Arthur is putting on a brave face except for the fact that it does not look brave at all and he is precisely two blinks away from crying and holy fucking shit why has no one fixed his Merlin yet.

Percival is...well actually no one has any clue what Percival is doing until he announces his findings.

“Huh, other than the bruise on his forehead, his only injury seems to be to his right ankle.”

That finally silences the room.

“His...his ankle?” Arthur asks, staying strong like a true knight and only crying a little.

“Yes, his right ankle. You know, the one he steps forward with when he puts his hand out to do magic.”

Lancelot finally stops chest compressions at that to stare at the ankle in question.

“Percival...” he asks slowly, “where is Merlin’s right shoe?”

“It wasn’t on him when Arthur lifted him so I took a quick look before we left the clearing. It was laying beside him in the grass, buckles unfastened.”

And that’s when the last hour’s events all come together.

Merlin was not cursed. Merlin was not drained of power. Merlin was not somehow horribly injured.

Merlin, the most powerful dollophead in all the five kingdoms, had stepped forwards to use his magic against the sorceress and - luckily after he unleashed the spell that vanquished her - tripped on his unfastened boot and fucking KNOCKED HIMSELF OUT.

“A-Arthur?” comes the confused groan of the dollophead in question.

And Arthur laughs. He laughs until the tears of worry become the tears of love and relief and second chances and the insanity only Merlin could bring about.

“Oh Merlin,” Arthur laughs, sinking to the ground to cradle the other man’s bruised head, brushing his fingers against a soft cheek.

“For all you claim it’s your destiny protect me, I swear you’ll be the death of me.”
