📀 "First time any artist has received five gold records in one year."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
March 1, 1970. Elvis during Press Conference in Houston, Texas.
After the final show there was a press conference at which Elvis was presented with gold records for 5 of his 1969 releases. RCA Vice-President Rocco Loginestra was on hand to present Elvis with five gold records. They were 'In The Ghetto', 'Suspicious Minds', 'Don't Cry Daddy' and two albums 'Elvis At The International' and 'From Elvis In Memphis'. It is reported that this is the first time any artist has received five gold records in one year.
At the Sunday afternoon press conference (This Press Conference has always been wrongly dated as being from February 27, 1970, but no Press Conference was held on that date) Elvis said he hadn't seen anything of Houston outside his hotel suite and the Astrodome. Elvis went on to tell reporters "I got a big thrill out of this appearance, I loved it. I know I'm signed to do the International Hotel in Las Vegas again, but nothing has been said about other personal appearances. I'd like to do them." Later in the news conference he said "I knew it would be hard work at the Dome. There is no personal contact. I decided I just had to work as hard as I could, do the show and get off. The sound system bugged me the first night because I kept hearing my own echo. We had our own engineer and we got that all straightened out." Source: elvispresleymusic.com.au

Oh to be at one of the 1969 Las Vegas shows.
His excitement at finally doing live shows again.
9 minute monologues reminiscing about life, his career, just being batshit crazy.
Witnessing pure chaotic energy, comedic genuis and insane talent.
Just watching him having fun.
Watching HIM.

And sneak onto the stage. To give him a hug or to kidnap him, I'm not sure yet

Random passer by: Who's that guy standing in that front yard with the megaphone wearing a motorcycle cap, police badge, medallion and jacket without a shirt?!
Audubon Drive resident: Oh, that's just Elvis, our friendly neighbourhood rock 'n' roll star

Elvis working up Just Pretend with Voice (Sherrill Nielsen, Tim Baty and Donnie Sumner), at RCA Hollywood on August 16th 1974, ahead of opening night in Las Vegas.
Tumblr media
This might have been one of the last times that that a concerted effort would be made to work less familiar songs up to tight performance standard in a structured rehearsal, rather than actually on stage and in front of an audience. There was a sharp nod toward the commercial aspect as well, with a strong focus on promoting new material, either recently released or due out soon, the fruits of Elvis’ sessions at Stax Records, Memphis, in 1973. The boys have a little fun along the way, at one point Elvis asks, "What can we screw up next?"
The session personnel appear to be the core TCB Band; (James Burton, John Wilkinson, Ronnie Tutt, Duke Bardwell, Glen Hardin and Charlie Hodge) with backing vocals by Voice. No sign of JD and the Stamps or the Sweet Inspirations for this session.

If you could watch Elvis performing only one song many times in different concerts, which song would that be?
Let's try to choose songs that he played over a long period of time, which would be songs from the 50s that Elvis kept in his setlist in the late 60s and throughout the 70s.

Mine is "Trying to Get You" (at least if that wish were given to me at the present moment).
Elvis recorded this song at Sun Records on July 11, 1955 and over the years he soulfully sang the tune. After the 7-year break from live performances during the Hollywood era, Elvis would revive the song onstage, starting from the '68 Comeback Special. "Trying to Get You" was also a part of his 70s concerts setlists, being one of the songs featured in Elvis's last TV Special "Elvis In Concert" as part of the live shows recorded for it on June 1977.

From the live album "Elvis In Concert" recorded during concerts in Omaha, Nebraska (June 19, 1977) and Rapid City, South Dakota (June 21), as part of Elvis' last TV special with the same title as the album, both posthumously released in October 3, 1977.
Elvis performing this song always leaves me, like... breathless. I would love to be in the audience each time he performed it live. ✨

I can neither confirm nor deny that I just spent a stupid amount of money on a book because it has high resolution photos of sweaty karate Elvis.
