The Bastard Kings and their families

This is series of posts are complementary to this historical parallels post from the JON SNOW FORTNIGHT EVENT, and it's purpouse to discover the lives of medieval bastard kings, and the following posts are meant to collect portraits of those kings and their close relatives.

In many cases it's difficult to find contemporary art of their period, so some of the portrayals are subsequent.

Quick question: is Augustine some kind of white noise for Elvira? Because Urraca’s plan (2x05) worked, which means Elvira knows Latin no better than Sancho, since she was present when the “vows” were pronounced. (Also, it wasn’t “some cautions from Seneca against gluttony”, it was De Ira! And quite a telling quote, considering how Alfonso and Sancho feel about each other.)

The canvas depicts King Ferdinand I of León ( c.1016-1065 ), son of Sancho Garcés III of Pamplona , ​​King of Pamplona, ​​and Queen Jimena Fernandez. He promoted the Reconquista , conquering the towns of Lamego (1057), Viseo (1058) and Coimbra (1064), as well as subjecting several of the taifa kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula to the payment of parias to the Leonese kingdom. When he died, he divided his kingdoms among his sons: his first-born son, Sancho II , was given the kingdom of Castile and the parias on the taifa kingdom of Zaragoza . His second son, Alfonso VI , was given the kingdom of León and the imperial title, as well as the parias of the taifa kingdom of Toledo . The third son of Ferdinand I, Garcia , received the es , created for that purpose, and the parias of the taifa kingdoms of Seville and Badajoz . End of serial numbers for Super 8 film, given to each one of us filmmakers to make a camera edit film. I made Paranoia. (It may be lost.) I think Josh Mabe was there. I was sitting next to Saddie Benning whom I wish to meet some day. At The Ann Arbor Film Festival she and her dad were showing at the same time. I haven't seeing her dad's films, but I know he also focusess on the landscape like I do.

Royal Virgins, Holy Princesses

Elvira Ramirez: Daughter of King Ramiro II of Leon, she entered the convent of San Salvador as a young girl. Elvira later became regent for her nephew, Ramiro III, repulsing Vikings raids and accompanying a coalition of Christian leaders against the Muslim caliph of Cordoba. The subsequent Christian defeat at Gormaz led to Elvira’s expulsion from the regency. The rebellion and overthrow of her nephew by Bermudo II would prevent Elvira from ever returning to her former position of power.

Urraca of Zamora and Elvira of Toro: Daughters of Fernando I of Leon, Castile and Galicia, both lived as professed virgins, though neither took the veil. On his death, Fernando partitioned his lands among his children with Urraca receiving the city of Zamora and Elvira, Toro, along with all the monasteries in the realm, part of an anomalous set of lands known as the Infantado, gifted to unmarried infantas.  Urraca became involved in the conflicts between her three brothers for control of her father’s kingdoms, supporting her favorite, Alfonso, against their brother, Sancho, who was assassinated while laying siege to Zamora. Both sisters would play an influential role in their brother, Alfonso VI’s reign, though Urraca seems to have enjoyed the closer relationship, even being named queen in recognition for her part in ruling, leading some dubious sources to accuse her of incest with her brother. Both were patrons of religious institutions, particularly San Isidoro de Leon, where both would be buried. 

Sancha Raimundez: Daughter of Queen Urraca of Leon-Castile and sister of Emperor Alfonso VII, Sancha would follow in her great-aunts’ footsteps, remaining a virgin throughout her life, receiving possession of the Infantado, and being recognized as a queen by her brother while serving as one of his most important advisers. Sancha picked up the family tradition of patronage of San Isidoro and would be buried there. Following her death, the Infantado was divided among female members of the royal family and religious institutions, such as Las Huelgas de Burgos, where infantas would continue to reside as abbesses and nuns.

Top 10 Films I watched in 2022

So I'm gonna start 2023 by looking at the films I watched in 2022 and sharing my faves

10.All Through The Night

Big thanks to @goodanswerfoxmonster,who reccomended this movie to me.This is a comedy thriller about Gangster fighting Nazis ,with a cast led by Humphrey Bogart ,Conrad Veidt,Peter Lorre ,and Judith Anderson

9.The Witch

A film I have put off watcching for years ....And it turned out to be very good.Its a horror film but it is spooky in ways I didnt expect

8.Dog Soldiers

Soldiers vs Werewolves.......WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT ??? Great Premise and great effects ,plus I love me some werewolves and these are some of the best ever

7.The Rabbis Cat

Big thanks to @ariel-seagull-wings who recommended this film ,I enjoyed the philosophical discussions between the Rabbi and his cat

6.House

On paper its about a bunch of girls staying at a friends aunts house,who is actually a ghost trying to eat them .....Thats on paper in practice this film is bonkers as hell and I love it

5.The Fabulous Baron Munchausen

Probably the most visually striking films I saw this year ,this is one of the most gorgeous fantasy films I have ever seen

4.How Green Was My Valley -

Possibly my favorite John Ford movie with one hell of an amazing early performance by Roddy McDowell ,this film about a Welsh mining family was really emotional to me.Also I think it is a very well deserved Best Picture winner

3.Mikey and Nicky

A character piece about two gangster who are best friends.The movie is basically that old saying "With friends like these who needs enemies " ,with a great dynamic between Peter Falk and John Cassevetes

2.Elvira Mistress of the Dark

This movie is great and I am not surprised it is aclassic among the LGBTQ community . It is both highly entertaining but you can tell this is a personal film

1.Guillermo Del Toros Pinocchio

A beautifully animated and voice acted telling of the classic tale of Pinocchio but exploring what it is to be mortal ,the relation ship between fathers and sons ,and oh yeah the villains are literal fascists' .I saw some people who were shocked by this....They clearly dont follow the career of Guillermo Del Toro .I was overtaken by how beautiful and emotional this film was and it is my favorite film I saw this year
