With the discovery in 2022 of RAAC and asbestos in stages 7, 8 and 9 at the legendary Elstree Studios, their days were numbered so it comes as no surprise that last Thursday saw Hertsmere Borough Council give final permission for these iconic stages - home to Star Wars, Indiana Jones and so many more classic productions - to be demolished next year, and rebuilt in accordance with modern construction protocols. The planning committee at Hertsmere Borough Council (HBC) gave the go-ahead at a meeting on Thursday for the demolition of stages seven, eight and nine, which would take place between January and August 2024. Construction workers found asbestos in the building in 2022. HBC said the roofs in these buildings – which were first used in the 1960s – “had not only lost their useful life but were in a dangerous state”. Building experts also say RAAC concrete can deteriorate after 30 years. HBC, which owns Elstree Film Studios, previously agreed to rebuild the stages in the future, although plans remain unclear. Back in 2012, Stage 7 - the stage that was home to the very first shot of A New Hope and the final shot filmed for Revenge of the Sith - was host to Elstree Empire Day, an incredible event celebrating the home of the original trilogy with guests including producer Gary Kurtz, Art Director Norman Reynolds, Camera Operator Ronnie Taylor, Clapper Loader Jamie Harcort, Specialist Painter Ron Punter, 2nd Unit Camera Operator Geoff Glover, Focus Puller Peter Taylor, Wardrobe Supervisor Toby Lofthouse and Mark Hamill’s stunt double Colin Skeaping joined onscreen talent Dave Prowse, Kenny Baker, Rusty Goffe. https://twitter.com/elstreestudios/status/1257605864963399682 With the sad closure recently of 32TEN Studios in San Francisco, another iconic location departs. Day 322 of 365 Photo Challenge.  Elstree Studios is a generic term which can refer to several current and defunct British film studios and television studios based in or around the towns of Borehamwood and Elstree in Hertfordshire. Studios have been located there since film production began in the area during 1914. While some facilities have been built and demolished since then, two sites remain in use in Borehamwood; Elstree Studios on Shenley Road and the BBC Elstree Centre on Eldon Avenue. Despite being called "Elstree Studios", only one studio has ever been located in Elstree itself, the remainder residing in the adjacent town of Borehamwood. When the studios were being established, Elstree was significantly larger than Borehamwood. Nowadays, Borehamwood is the larger, but the old names have remained in use. The civil parish that contains the town was called "Elstree". The local railway station was originally known as "Elstree" (nowadays, it is called "Elstree & Borehamwood"). The local telephone exchange was also called "Elstree". Eldon Avenue Studios, Borehamwood Main article: BBC Elstree Centre The Neptune Film Company opened the first studios in Borehamwood in 1914. Production ceased during 1917, and the studio was sold to the Ideal Film Company who used the site up until 1924. During 1928, the studio was sold to Ludwig Blattner who connected it to the electricity mains and introduced a German system of sound recording. The Blattner Studio was leased to Joe Rock Productions during 1934, which purchased the site two years later. Rock Productions built four new large stages. The site was again sold, and taken over by the British National Films Company between 1939 and 1948, although during this period a large portion of the studio was taken over by the British government for war work. During 1953, the studios were bought by Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., mainly for television production and were later sold to Lew Grade's Associated Television (ATV). What a night we had watching the hilarious Jon Richardson. At the filming of #ultimateworrior there were childish giggles that I’m sure won’t make the final cut. Even for a venerable studio like Elstree, with the many, many incredible stories and adventures that have taken place within its walls, a visit from a true movie legend is worth shouting about.
