* A bit of a ramble about ElQuackity as a character *
I think during the election arc ElQuackity was a very interesting character. He came about during a time when there was very little conflict between characters, the islanders where all united against an enemy that was an outside entity (The federation and this was also when every time the code showed up it was trying to kill an egg so also the codes) so it was very different and intriguing to have an islander be the antagonist. We also had the added mystery of Quackity having gone missing and the islanders trying to piece together the difference between Quackity and ElQ and his involvement in Quackity's disappearance whilst more and more signs pointed towards ElQ having sinister intentions. It felt very organic, here was this character who was out for themselves and wanted to succeed in the election for his own reasonings and was willing to do anything and harm anyone on the island including the eggs. As time went on throughout the election arc more about ElQ was revealed too such as his involvement with the federation and all of this made for a compelling character.
However, the character felt very unnecessary during purgatory (in my opinion) It felt very much like having a villainous character among the islanders just for the sake of having one. The only compelling thing that he bought to this particular story was when he was told if blue and green team drew during their competition that everyone would die so he tried to manipulate tubbo and roier into making that happen. Other than that he was just kinda there? Idk i just think it sucks to have such an interesting antagonist character be shoved into a storyline JUST because they felt they needed a villain who was a traitor and not just the observer eye guy. It just felt like during this entire arc it was so obvious that he was "a bad guy" like when it was revealed he was working with the observer literally none of the islanders were surprised they were all just like "yeah of course" and then he decided to stay in purgatory and that's just that I guess?
I think something else that makes it hard for his character to still be compelling is the lack of knowledge of his motivation. It's hard to remain engaged with a character but especially a villain if you have no idea what their motivation is for any of their choices. At first it was interesting because it felt like ElQ was motivated to win the elections because of his involvement with the federation and to help maintain order because if he won the federation would still ultimately be in control and it led to this over arching threat that he could win and leave the islanders even more under the control of the federation. However, in Purgatory he was suddenly working with the eye and we have like no idea why (as far as I know) so now it's confusing as to why he's done any of this and what the antagonists motivations are.
I, of course, understand there's still so much that could happen with this character but now that this part of purgatory is done I am confused about what this character was doing and why. I'm hoping in the future we learn more about him and become intrigued and compelled by his antagonistic storyline again.

fr it isn't even a cool design choice for "something's wrong" because going from dark brown to BLUE is sooo freaking obvious. if u want to change the eye colour a bit for that sense of something not being the same, have one have dark brown and the other black eyes. Just the slightest change, something that elq wouldn't absolutely need to depend on shades for 😭
the point of the shades is to better hide his emotions so he has no vulnerability. idk!! maybe q had black eyes and he has dark brown eyes so you'd be able to tell if he was nervous like a little liar.
but brown/black eyes and dark brown/black hair are important features to their ethnicities and erasing one of those features for "cool accesorisation" kind of just feels wrong and tho not intentional it's kind of harmful. other than not finding interest in the natural eye colours that his ethnicity has and going all crazy for blue eyes AGAIN, in lots of art styles you wouldn't even be able to tell el q is mexican by that point since plenty don't even know how to draw other ethnic traits like noses? he just looks like a blue-eyed white guy? just a thought 🫶🫶🫶
i don't care what kind of au you're doing stop giving quackity blue eyes
