I started listening to the Wicked audiobook so I could draw at the same time and remembered this scene & the dynamic that I loved to bits even though Boq annoyed the hell out of me for obvious reasons

Every time I see Cynthia's Elphie: Oh my god, my Shayla💔
there's such an endearing innocence to cynthia's elphaba, like the way she immediately assumes glinda had her best intentions in mind by giving her that (hideodeous) hat because no one had been kind to her before, to the way she was visibly nervous but excited to attend her first party, and even up until popular, where she earnestly attempts to follow glinda's advice, plus the entirety of the wizard and i.
you can tell this is a girl who just wants to do good and be genuinely accepted, so when she's visibly hurt and feels betrayed during the ozdust scene, it is so painful and heartbreaking to watch. and then cynthia begins crying, and you can't help but cry with her.

Just wanna tell you how much I love your Gelphie fic 😭😭😭 they make my day
For you, is it easier to write through Galinda or Elphaba POV?
thank you sm!! you're so kind <3
writing galinda is far easier for me! mostly because she's so ridiculous and i have a blast writing her shenanigans, but also because i find her voice is very distinct. she's also just fascinating to me, i like to puzzle her out.

To preface this I do see and appreciate the homoeroticism of Glinda and Elphaba’s relationship, but that being said, I’m noticing a phenomenon of people who’ve seen the movie but not the full show saying “Glinda and Elphie are obviously gay, and also Fiyero is lame and unnecessary.” For one thing, those opinions on Fiyero will likely change after Part 2 comes out because he is both important and awesome, but also? I really do love Glinda and her bond with Elphaba, but quite frankly I don’t think she deserves Elphie. Glinda’s biggest flaw is her cowardice (and even that isn’t fair, because she’s in a tough situation and her survival mode is to work within the system as best she can), and Act 2 proves she simply won’t take the same risks that Fiyero will for Elphie until it’s too late. Fiyero is brave and devoted to Elphie in ways Glinda isn’t (even when she wants to be). Glinda isn’t the one who sacrifices everything she’s ever known and nearly gets tortured to death to protect Elphaba. Not to mention that Elphaba’s fighting spirit and willingness to speak up are matched in Fiyero. AND the way the theme of finding not just worth but beauty in “unattractive” people comes full circle with Elphie and Fiyero. Just. End me now. They make me INSANE. It isn’t until after Elphaba’s apparent death that Glinda’s bravery really shines. The end of the show is basically Glinda acknowledging she should’ve done better and promising she WILL do better, she will be Glinda “The Good,” all thanks to what she’s learned from Elphaba. It’s kind of the point that Glinda wasn’t perfect for Elphie (and that’s okay, because their relationship was beautiful and profound anyway). I’m so excited to see movie fans experience this ride once Part 2 comes out.

trying to decide what’s more tragic:
glinda genuinely believing elphie melted and there’s no one to look for
or
glinda realizing that elphie left her behind and believing she deserves it so she never even tries to look for her

so i'm thinking about dancing through life, and that interlude between glinda and elphaba, and specifically how in the movie they make a point to draw the audience attention (the audience who is following glinda's perspective) to elphie's magic books
Tumblr media
and it seems like a minorly odd detail to put in there, given how the only relevance they have to elphaba's side of this song is that she has a magic teacher she can ask a favour from, which isn't news to anyone
but glinda specifically looks at those books before she says anything to elphaba, and she also has this look after giving her the hat, like it's a decision she already partially regrets
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and i think, as much as glinda does profess to hate elphie at this point in the story, and as much as she seems to be doing this just to get one over on her, i don't think that's the case at all
i think she was partially talked into the prank by her friends, who definitely encourage her to put on her usual the world revolves around me social mask, but i think she justified that decision to herself with the reasoning "well elphaba's my favourite teacher's favourite student, she has everything i want, i should take her down a peg", as the magic books remind her
she clearly already cared about elphie in some form, or she wouldn't have regretted it at all, but she thought that made them even
until elphaba turned the entire thing on its head by freely offering glinda everything she wanted, everything she thought elphaba had been spitefully keeping from her
and that's when she realises she can't actually knock elphaba down a peg, bc there's nowhere lower to go. glinda has everything and elphie has nothing, and elphaba just gave up the one thing she had, because she thought glinda deserved to share it with her
so glinda whose entire life has been about collecting social power, who knows exactly what she has and what it takes to hold onto it, she gives that up at the ozdust too. because elphaba deserves to share it with her

Went on a rant about why throuple and thought I should share my rambling thoughts here too
Starting with Fiyero. Fiyero who’s given up before even starting. He doesn’t want to try. He likes Galinda because they can have dumb fun together, they both know how to charm people, how to brighten the mood, they are a social power couple. But as Elphaba points out, as much fun as he’s having, he’s still miserable because he hates being so shallow. Elphaba makes him think, makes him consider things outside of himself. And while Fiyero doesn’t want to try, both girls are going to try so hard. They’re both so passionate, it makes him passionate.
Galinda is a stereotypical popular girl. She wanted Fiyero because he’s a prince, that fits in her fantasy. But they genuinely have so much chemistry, have so much fun together. They’re so similar and that’s comforting. But it’s Elphaba that broadened her horizons. Galinda is kind, deep down, she’s just a spoiled rich girl who never had to consider these things before. Hell, the only reason she hated Elphaba is because she’s being a baby about having to share a room. When they first met she tried to be nice. It was condescending but Galinda genuinely didn’t even realize. She wants to be kind to everyone, she does want to help. And as the song says, they have been changed for good. Elphaba made her realize she was being shallow, that there’s more. Galinda always wanted to be kind, she was just going about it wrong. Elphaba helps her be good in a better way. Also the whole scene at the ozdust, that act of kindness that Elphaba extended to her made her realize she was being awful to someone who didn’t deserve it.
And then there’s Elphaba. Elphaba who’s convinced no one could ever love her. Of course she was going to be antagonistic to Galinda, she’s being defensive, she can’t imagine a world where someone like Galinda could ever be kind to her. She was just giving Galinda the same energy she was giving her. But once they overcome that, they so easily communicate. Galinda is so easy going, so open, she wants to know Elphie, makes her feel safe to open up. With Fiyero it’s the fact that he doesn’t care. She’s green? So what? What does that matter? But she’s clever and sassy, he likes that. He sasses back, they have a little battle of words. Fiyero likes to pretend he’s stupid, but he’s not. He can keep up with her thoughts. He sees what she cares about and is more than willing to help. Galinda gets her to smile and Fiyero gets her to relax.
Elphaba needs support and at two different points both Galinda and Fiyero give her that. Galinda gives her the push yo take that jump, gives her the cloak that says I can’t come with you but I believe in you. Fiyero holds the wizard hostage for her! They’re both so proud of their girlfriend!
