It took me so long to get around to reading this, but yes to all of this. I’ve been on “gif watch” for myself and for other people. The simpler gifs tend to be taken and re-uploaded most of the time in new pseudo-gifsets, and I get that the internet is a Wild West that we can’t completely control, and we’re never going to, but to put work into something only to have it diminished by a repost, in a word, sucks.

It’s part of why I don’t create for fandom much anymore (along with upkeep and the whole timeline of if you don’t have something out within seconds of something airing, it’s irrelevant), and has just led to immense burnout. Why create when it’s not appreciated, let alone respected, right?

Some people might see this as stupid to complain about, but, again, it really comes down to respect and it comes down to asking. Personally, I don’t want my stuff reposted! I’d want it to be reblogged and spread that way. To me, that’s sharing, that’s the heart of it and the heart of fandom. Interaction with fandom creators already seems to be a dying thing, with so many people liking posts instead of reblogging them. It’s something we struggle with. We’re already fighting to keep their heads up without feeling exhausted or like it’s worth creating at all, so reposting just because you have access to the thing doesn’t help us at all. And most of the time, the permission isn’t even there.

Just ask, first. Please.

as with any other kind of artist, each gif maker has a style and signature that is unique to them. trust me when i say we can spot our own--and each other's!--work from a mile away. i'm sure this is something writers and artists who create through other media can relate to as well.

just because you don't necessarily 'see' the work that goes into it doesn't mean it's not there or that there isn't a person behind that work with feelings who notices when their work is being appropriated by someone else. it shouldn't even be a question of the measure of the work itself; we don't arbitrate the sharing of a fic or painting or fan vid without authorship based on how much or how little time and effort we think that person put into it. it was made by someone, plain and simple. it is not up to anyone else to dissolve that person of their efforts, their work.

i can't speak for all gif makers. but for me, it never feels good to see my work get used or reposted without credit or permission. please just ask!

tl;dr if you save gifs, know whose work you're saving. if you want to use them in any space beyond the privacy of your own eyes, ask first.

The authors of XKit Rewritten said during the experiments that at the time, since this was an "experiment" they weren't going to implement anything to revert to the old UI (although who knows if they'll do it now). And the dashboard unfucker has worked beautifully enough for me to where I genuinely couldn't tell if they had ended the experiment or not.
