i want more nuance to be entered into the discussion of the green girl sorority and how differently cynthia plays elphaba in comparison to those who came before her because while a lot of people are rightfully like "why was elphaba not black from the beginning" and celebrating that she is now being played by a black woman, i think we need to be careful in just writing off all the elphabas of the past as Random White Girls when the role was championed (and often followed/succeeded) by a jewish woman
the pop culture archetype of the Wicked Witch has deep roots in antisemitism stretching faaaar far back. there is a level of reclamation happening in casting idina menzel, a jewish woman, to play the Misunderstood and Maligned young girl who is branded as exactly that. and stage!Elphaba is also written and acted with jewish stereotypes in mind--she is loud, aggressive, no-nonsense, blunt. she is quick to advocate for herself and shut down the discrimination she faces. all of this is very intentional! her personality is abrasive from years of abuse, and that makes propagandizing her easy. this is literally the thesis statement of the musical--it's not about aptitude, it's the way you're viewed.
cynthia's performance of elphaba is fucking INSPIRED despite going in a completely different direction. she's much more reserved, analytical, one of her key character traits is how well she can read people (see her calling out Galinda as insecure/putting on airs in their first scene together, clocking that Fiyero is using his party guy persona as a shield for his own depression) elphaba's attempts to blend in and make herself smaller all fail simply because of her existence, if not that then because she feels empathy so strongly she often struggles to hold back from acting, protecting.
personality wise, though, cynthia's elphaba is very quiet and closed-off, not at all the bullet-to-the-face that she is in the stage show, and... she still gets propagandized and maligned. though this seems to contradict the other interpretation, it tells of the other end of the spectrum of propaganda, one that black women watching (and many, MANY other marginalized folks) are sure to identify with--it does not matter how "nice," how reserved, how small a black woman makes herself. a racist society will still scrutinize her every action for a way to parse ill intent from it, brand her as an angry black woman who is dangerous and wicked, and write off any humanity she has in the process.
these two very different interpretations tell of the lie of assimilation. the fact of the matter is, when you are marginalized, there is no way to sand down your edges enough to make the people oppressing you "accept" you. that is why wicked is a tragedy at its core. whether loud and aggressive or quiet and unimposing, there is nothing elphaba could have done to make the people of Oz see her as anything other than a scapegoat to blame all their problems on.
so while i definitely appreciate that people are excited for black girl era elphaba, i would encourage us all to still show appreciation for what came before--that was not white girl era elphaba. that was jewish girl era elphaba. two houses, both alike in dignity, two stories both worth being told.

Meeting Elphabas family Headcannon:
Pairing: Elphaba Thropp x reader, the Thropp family x reader.
Trigger warnings: nervousness, Elphabas dad ig.
Note: let’s pretend Elphabas mom is still alive pls. Let my baby have a family.
Request.
Tumblr media
Elphaba's Nervousness:
Elphaba is anxious about introducing you to her family, knowing how complicated her relationship with them can be. She reassures you that it’s not personal but admits she’s protective of you.
Meeting Melena (Elphaba’s Mother):
Melena greets you with warmth, almost too much, pulling you into a tight hug, a contrast to Elphaba’s more reserved demeanor.
She’s charismatic and playful, commenting on how much Elphaba talks about you (even if Elphaba is quick to deny it).
Melena’s affection for you feels almost performative, like she’s trying to make up for something unspoken between her and Elphaba.
Meeting Frex (Elphaba’s Father):
Frex is standoffish at first, perhaps disappointed or unsettled by Elphaba’s defiance of traditional expectations, but gradually warms up to you.
He might make awkward, old-fashioned comments, trying to be fatherly, but you sense the tension between him and Elphaba, who clearly resents his patronizing tone.
His attempts to bond with you are more about asserting control than making a genuine connection, but you manage to navigate through it with polite responses.
Nessarose (Elphaba’s Sister):
Nessa seems cold at first but eventually shows curiosity, especially after seeing the dynamic between you and Elphaba.
She’s intelligent and quietly observant, noting how much Elphaba seems to trust you, and this causes her to warm up—albeit slowly.
The two of you bond over your understanding of Elphaba’s complexities, though Nessa’s loyalty to her sister sometimes leads to small, sharp comments.
Elphabas Reactions:
Elphaba stays mostly by your side, but she’s visibly tense, trying to hold it all together for your sake while dealing with family dynamics.
You can tell Elphaba appreciates your patience, especially when it comes to handling her family’s quirks.
Afterward, when you're alone, she admits how difficult it is to be around them, but she’s glad you’re there with her.

Chapter 5; Poppies With Heart-Shaped Petals
(Snippet from previous part:)
Galinda’s breath hitched as they turned a corner, slamming into what she assumed was a wall of black bricks. She began to fall backward, and the girl caught her by her waist.
“Elphaba?”
______________________________________________________
Elphaba blinked, staring at the blonde in her arms. She felt heat creep up her neck onto her cheeks, and Galinda herself reddened. She quickly moved to help the girl to her feet and swiftly fled the scene, aiming for a hiding place.
“Wait! Elphaba!” She vaguely heard the girl calling as she turned the corner.
It was too early in the morning to be dealing with Galinda Upland.
Where would she even hide? The library was too obvious; even if it was a large building, her complexion was simply too eye-catching. A secluded corner could do, but those were too far from any of the classrooms during her morning period.
Unfortunately for Elphaba, the blonde was starting to catch up, noticeably lacking the two lackeys that were usually attached to her hips. She was saying something, but to the older girl it was nothing more than a mere whisper. Elphaba’s name, asking her to slow, even cursing at her for being so fast.
A random room would have to do.
Elphaba had entered a secluded classroom with the intent to lock the blonde out, but Galinda was already inside. She leaned back against the door, trying to catch her breath.
“Dear Oz, how are you so fast?” She asked, panting, hands on her hips. “You gave me more of a workout than our Physical-”
“What do you want?” Elphaba asked coldly, glaring at the girl. Galinda flinched, that tone was usually reserved for their most heated debates. That’s not exactly something you want to be coming from your soulmate’s mouth when you’re trying to get on her good side.
“I want to talk,” she stepped forward, and Elphaba stepped back. “About, well,” She vaguely gestured to the soulmate mark just below her ear and Elphaba’s. “This.”
“What is there to talk about?” the green girl asked sharply, crossing her arms. “As I recall from last week, you want absolutely nothing to do with me.”
“Well, the circumstances were different,” Galinda muttered, fidgeting nervously.
“Different how?”
“For one, we loathed each other, and we were rivals.”
“And why does that change now?” Elphaba questioned, her tone sharp, daring her to answer. To only prove her right.
“Because we’re soulmates,” Galinda answered, then swallowed, “I know that when I say it like that it sounds superficial, but I-”
“But it is,” the older girl concluded, stepping forward. “No matter how you put it, it is superficial. You only want to change because, for some ungodly reason, fate decided to string us together.” She began to walk past the blonde.
Galinda managed to get just another moment in before she left, she grabbed Elphaba’s wrist and stammered out;
“How about a courtship?”
Elphaba blinked and furrowed her brow, “Excuse me?”
“A courtship,” Galinda repeated, letting go of her hand and straightening her posture. She took a deep breath, walking behind Elphaba in circles. “I can court you, so I can be your soulmate,”
The older girl raised an eyebrow. “You already are,”
“That’s not the point,” Galinda huffed, stepping forward, “Take it as an apology as well, for being so…”
“Insufferable.” Elphaba finished for her, unmoving as the blonde continued to move towards her.
“Yes, that,” Galinda nodded,
“Fine, then,” Elphaba confirmed and began to walk towards the door before Galinda surprised her by grabbing her wrist.
“We’re gonna have to talk more,” The younger girl dragged Elphaba to the desks with a surprising
“Why?”
“Well, we must discuss the circumstances of our courtship!” Galinda gestured for Elphaba to sit next to her, pulling a notebook and fountain pen out of seemingly nowhere. “I’ll have to know what to do!”
“Like what?” She raised an eyebrow, “I’d rather you do whatever you like.”
“Oh, believe me, you wouldn’t.” Galinda shook her head, “I am simply too grandiose in my affections, you wouldn’t live.”
“Fair point.” Elphaba nodded, writing something down in the notebook, Galinda tried to peek but Elphaba wouldn’t let her. After she was done writing, she slid it over to Galinda.
No more than one public declaration of affection a day, lest Galinda write a song for a school-wide choreographed dance for it.
Galinda gasped, furrowing her brow, “Slander,‘ she whispered.
Gifts just be shared in secret with no more than 3 a day.
Galinda grinned, but Elphaba tapped the note under the clause.
Grandeur must be kept at a reasonable amount.
“This is torture.” Galinda huffed, turning to Elphaba with an overdramatic sigh. She lit up when she saw the faintest tilt of her lips into a hint of a smile. Almost.
But goodness, she made that almost.
She barely registered when Elphaba gave her the pen, only coming to when the older girl tapped her with it.
“It’s your turn to torture me.”
Galinda paused, tapping her chin in thought, and then her lips curled into a devilish smile.
Elphaba Thropp must give some form of appreciation for any and all affections, with a written report at the end of the week.
“This is ridiculous,” Elphaba muttered as she read over the paper.
“I call it feedback, I must know how to please you, should I not?” The blonde grinned, tilting her head to the side.
Elphaba raised an eyebrow, “Is there no better way to phrase that?”
There was a pause, and then Galinda yanked the notebook out of Elphaba’s hands. Before the older girl could open her mouth to speak, she pressed a finger against her lips. “One more clause,”
Galinda Upland and Elphaba Thropp must act the same prior to the soulmate revelation, including, but not limited to; bickering, debating, and competing for the top spot in class. These interactions, however, must no longer be hostile or filled with malice.
Elphaba looked at her, confused. “Why?”
Galinda smirked back at her. “Why not?”

Hey wouldn’t it be really tragic if when Dorothy returns to Oz with Ozma (back when she’s under the identity of tip the farm boy) the two of them remind Glinda of her and elphaba.
Dorothy this girl who’s bright eyed, emotionally smart in general but oblivious to the people she’s closest to. Just like Glinda once was.
“Tip” (Ozma) being this more reserved kid, uncomfortable in their own skin on the precipice of learning something about themself and the world they now find themselves in that will fundamentally alter their life trajectory forever.
So similar to her Elphie. Who she believes she has truly lost for good.
Her subconsciously pushing Dorothy to be closer to Ozma. To stand by her and look after her. To not make the same mistake she did. Even before she learns Ozma is the lost princess of Oz.
She won’t let it happen again. She can’t.
She knows it would break her.

Another smol Gelphie prompt bc how else do I self soothe besides writing haha
Ft CG! Galinda and Little! Elphaba this time <3
(Sorry for the errors it’s past 2am and I’m still up 🤡)
Elphaba is quite a reserved person. She more or less really only speaks when spoken to, and when she does her words are calculated and precise, her smarts and sarcasm sharp as a knife and quick as a whip when she wields it.
She’s poised. Predictable. Powerful.
And galinda love that about her Elphie, truly she does, but when she regresses it’s like all the written and unwritten societal rules from her childhood in Munchkinland go flying out their— still broken— glass door, and the blonde can’t help but be proud of her little one for it.
“Look, look! Color, looksie!”
“Oh my goodness, Elphie did you color this rainbow?” Galinda asks rhetorically, holding up the girls drawing of a sunny day featuring a comically large rainbow and two,,,, birds? She’s not two sure, but that didn’t stop her from praising, “This is fantastical, museum worthy! If we had a fridge, it would go front and center!”
The green girl laughs happily, her smile wider than Galinda has ever seen it. Elphaba usually regresses to an older kid, her usual age preference around six to eight years old but today? Today her sweet little is a ball of toddler energy, digging out every toy from their hiding spots just to leave them stranded in the middle of the room, discarded when she spots something else to play with, jumping on the bed until she starts to pant, spinning in circles with a stuffed animal in hand until she trips over her own feet, giggling in pure joy.
And of course, praise seeking for every little thing. Turning to validation, since shes experienced more of that feeling from her father compared to love. But Galinda is more than happy to give it, heaping loads of praise from problem solving to remembering to wash her hands, to make up for lost time.
“We should tape it to the side of the desk,” Elphaba says shyly, chewing on her nails as she suggests a place to show her artwork. Immediately Galinda jumps on that answer, singing about how wonderful on an idea that is and how she can’t wait to show Fiyero, who she knows will also shower the drawing with compliments to boost the girl’s confidence.
But for now it’s just the two of them, the green girl already moving on to the next thing that caught her eye— building blocks!
“Blocks! ‘Linny help make house?”
“Of course! The first thing we need are the bigger blocks; you need a strong foundation to start off with, and then we build upwards from there.”

Me in the confessional booth, looking over my shoulder twice to make sure no one can hear me, then speaking in a hushed voice: "Cynthia Erivo's choice to play Elphaba more reserved was a perfectly valid acting strategy. It's just not my favorite interpretation of the character; her brusqueness was what made this martyr relatable"

ok. um. maruders wicked au
so. sirius is elphaba, regulus is nessarose, remus is glinda, james is fiyero, lily is sarima, walburga is melena, orion is frex, peter is boq(?), snape is maddame morrible, marlene and marry are shenshen and pfanee (idk who else to put in their place), maybe voldemort as the wizard? andddd uhh yeah.
i was thinking it'd be based more around the book than the film (don't get me wrong the film and broadway adaptations are great, but i just greatly prefer the book): regulus has no arms and is a religious tyrant; james can either be the outgoing movie fiyero or the more reserved book fiyero, either works imo. all i care about is that the last thing he does before he dies is shit in a bucket and eat some saltines.
ok bye.

Reading the stage script of Wicked has done a good job of refreshing my memory of the show. In particular, it's reminded me of one small but important detail about Glinda.
(Spoilers for Act 2 and the second movie below.)
I had completely forgotten that at the end of the catfight scene, despite having just been brawling with Elphaba, Glinda is horrified when the guards show up and arrest her (before Fiyero comes to the rescue), and exclaims "I never meant for this to happen!"
I was under the impression that even though Glinda thought Nessarose's death was an accident, she did purposefully take advantage of it and give the silver shoes to Dorothy as bait to bring Elphaba out of hiding and get her captured. But I guess I was mistaken about that. I guess Glinda's earlier suggestion that the Wizard and Madame Morrible bait Elphaba by tricking her into thinking Nessa is in danger is just something she blurts out in anger, without really wanting to see it happen at heart. Or even if she does, at least she regrets it more quickly than I remembered.
I'm glad, because I had often thought to myself "How can the fans still ship her with Elphaba after she tries to get Elphaba caught by her worst enemies?" In other fandoms, male characters are crucified for doing much less to their love interests! Not to mention that it would mean she takes advantage of innocent Dorothy and uses her as a pawn to trap Elphaba.
This revelation still doesn't make me a Gelphie shipper – there are several reasons why I have reservations about the ship, though I appreciate how much it means to other people – but at least my view of Glinda is less dark now than it was for the past several years.
And it probably does show the strength of Elphaba and Glinda's bond not only that they can reconcile after all that happens, but that Elphaba never gets proof that Glinda didn't set her up to be captured, and Glinda never learns that Elphaba and Fiyero didn't have an affair behind her back either, yet they forgive each other anyway.

Cynthia Erivo was a lot more reserved in her performance as Elphaba at the start of the film as opposed to the "0 to 100 ranting and raging" Elphaba on-stage but I think it worked extremely well. Ok when I say reserved, she still had plenty of funny moments. But Cynthia's performance really highlighted that no matter what Elphie did, she was viewed as a 'problem'. She could literally just be standing there and it'd be a 'problem'. So, while it clearly pained her, she just remained calm and civil, while still putting ignorant idiots in their place. She did have her outbursts but even then it was seething anger not, well, stage!Elphie anger (no offense, I love my stage!Elphie rants)
But over the course of the film, she realizes she can't be calm and quiet anymore. That scene where she learns the Wizard is a fraud was sooooo well-acted and the perfect pay-off to all that build-up. And it 'concludes' with this gorgeous release of emotion in Defying Gravity and you get the sense that this is the first time Elphie has truly been able to express who she is and how she feels.
I just really enjoyed watching Cynthia's emotional journey as Elphaba. And it's only going to get better-and-worse in Part Two. Again, if that's how she did Defying Gravity... oh we are in for a treat with No Good Deed!
Thank you, Cynthia, for bringing Elphie to the big-screen.

Wildest Dreamings
Chapter 7: The Right Cohorts
Galinda beings her sorcery lessons and a charmed circle takes shape.
Previous Chapters: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6
READ ON AO3
Galinda Upland’s new beau and bosom friend had tragically abandoned her.
With Dr. Dillamond’s impromptu absence, she’d planned to properly introduce Elphaba onto the social scene and savor more of Fiyero’s flirtatious advances—a perfectly productive use of class time in Galinda’s opinion.
Before she could tuck them both under her rosy wings, they’d flown the coop, Elphie moralizing about academic responsibility as she led Fiyero out of the lecture hall. He’d glanced back at her as he went, and they’d exchanged sardonic pouts of despair at their separation. She pitied him, but that’s what he got for sitting next to the bookworm instead of her.
Galinda hoped he would daydream of her while Elphie coerced him into studying.
She spent the hour catching up on gossip and nail maintenance, yawning in agitated boredom whenever Pfannee or Shenshen tried to insert themselves into the conversation. Galinda had finally seen their true colors at the Ozdust, and they were so last year. If she had anything to do with it, green was about to be the season’s trend.
Excusing herself from her constituents, Galinda trotted out of Briscoe Hall and past the library, bouncing up the stairs to the technicolor terrace at the edge of campus. The kinetic wind sculpture above reflected a rainbow onto her complexion, and she basked in the light, hoping to absorb some of its magic.
She pulled her training wand out of her satchel and gave it a firm tap to wake it up. The baton had betrayed her with its refusal to conjure up a gown for Elphie, and she didn’t want to embarrass herself in front of Madame Morrible at her first seminar session.
Galinda was thrillified beyond words to finally start learning sorcery. If Elphaba hadn’t advocated for her admittance, Galinda’s great ambition would have remained a far-fetched fantasy. She’d yet to properly express her gratitution, still ashamed of the deceitful act of generosity that inspired her roommate’s endorsement. She was determined to make it up to Elphie, even if she never figured out how to transform that simple froat of hers into a magnificent ballgown.
If it was the last thing she did, she would help Elphaba Thropp embrace her clandestine beauty.
However, it wasn’t enough for Elphie to believe in her; she also had to evoke faith from Madame Morrible, a daunting task that Galinda felt woefully unprepared for. Thus, she practiced her flicking and flitting to get a feel for the instrument, manifesting even an ounce of enchantment. The sudden chime of the Time Dragon Clock broke her feverish focus, and she scurried to Madame Morrible’s private study, wishing she could whimsically float from place to place so as to not break a sweat.
When Galinda arrived, Elphaba was already perched at the center table, conversing with Morrible as if they were dear colleagues. The sorceress smiled tenderly at her prize pupil, and Galinda was bewildered by her warm demeanor, accustomed to the icier facade she reserved just for her. She knocked gently on the door to announce herself, and Morrible’s smile faded.
“Oh, it’s you, Miss Upland. I wasn’t sure if you’d actually accept my offer.”
Galinda gulped. “Yes, Madame Morrible, I’m honored by the chance to learn from you,” she assured her, “and to study alongside someone as naturally gifted as my roommate.” Her roommate’s eyes lit up at the compliment, but Morrible was unmoved.
“Very well, take a seat, child. We haven’t got all day.” Galinda scrambled onto a stool beside Elphaba, whipping out her training wand and a pink notebook as a show of dedication to her craft. Elphaba restrained a giggle as Morrible began her lesson.
“As you’re well aware, true magical ability has been in short supply in recent years, forcing me to search far and wide for new talent,” explained the professor, placing a proud hand on the green girl’s shoulder. “Thankfully, fate led Miss Elphaba to my tutelage, and she’s been making great progress in the art of levitation. At this rate, I see her someday serving alongside the Wizard as a formidable enchantress.”
Morrible then turned a skeptical eye toward Galinda. “What exactly do you hope to accomplish with your thaumaturgical pursuits, Miss Upland?”
She had not been expecting such a panoramic question this early on in her studies. “Um… I haven’t really thought about a specific specialty… but I know I want to help people with my magic!” It was vague and lacking in substance, but she hoped her enthusiasm would legitimize her intentions.
“How good of you,” Morrible hailed with clear condescension, “but a desire to help those in need is not enough. A proper sorceress must have intrinsic power she can then harness for a greater purpose.”
With a swish of her ornate skirts, Morrible drifted across the room to the open windows. She snapped her wrist and thrust out her palm with conviction, summoning a deafening clap of thunder from the clouds above. The girls looked out in awe as the clear day transformed into a drizzly scene. Morrible was humored by their astonishment.
“Weather is my specialty. I’ve received many awards in weatherfication for my work, making sure each region of Oz receives the appropriate conditions to thrive. Without interference, we could descend into another one of those dreadful droughts you learned about in history class. There must be magic behind your motivation, understand?”
The wannabe witches nodded their heads emphatically, their admiration palpable.
Dismissing the inclement weather as quickly as she’d compelled it, Morrible approached her students with intimidating authority.
“You,” she pointed to Galinda sharply, “stand up and let me see how you use that training wand. It may be naturally infused with enchantment, but the user must let their own magic run through it to cast a proper spell.”
Galinda rose obediently and gripped her wand with jittery hands. “What would you like me to do, Madame?”
Morrible looked around the study, zeroing in on the flower perched behind Elphaba’s ear. She plucked it stiffly from her hairline and held it out towards Galinda with a harsh grip.
“Turn this ranunculus into a rose.”
Galinda and Elphaba exchanged covert expressions of horror at the request. The flower herself seemed to tremble in fear within Morrible’s grasp.
Despite her nerves, Galinda spoke up. “But Madame Morrible, you don’t understand. That flower is special to—”
“I didn’t ask you to argue; I told you to transform the flower.”
Galinda looked to Elphie for consolation, and her roommate nodded with restrained sorrow. She felt nauseous as she watched Galinda wind herself up in an attempt to get the wand to cooperate.
How could Morrible expect Galinda to pull off a transformative enchantment on her very first day of training? For Oz sake, Elphaba had been practicing levitating a coin for three weeks!
“Rose!” Galinda commanded as she wildly wound the wand around the stem. As much as she wanted to prove herself to Morrible, she concealed a sigh of relief when their dear ranunculus maintained its true form.
The professor waved her palm with contempt and tossed the flower to the floor. “Enough with the theatrics, child. Sit down.” Galinda swiped up the bundle of petals before returning to her stool, cradling it tenderly as she braced herself for feedback.
“Miss Upland, let me make myself clear,” started Morrible as she gestured to Elphaba. “Your most charitable classmate apparently sees something in you that I currently do not—the possession of any real power or mystical inclinations whatsoever.”
Galinda Upland had never experienced a harsher humbling, and the professor’s assessment stung like a strike to the cheek. She blinked tears away as she tossed her hair, hoping to retain even a glimmer of her dignity.
Elphaba was taken aback by Madame Morrible’s brutal phrasing. She’d been nothing but patient and encouragerizing towards her in their seminar thus far, and she had hoped Morrible would have extended the same grace to Galinda. She fought the urge to argue on behalf of her friend’s potential, but found herself too meek to defy the dean sorceress.
Reaching past Galinda, Morrible selected a volume from the stack on the table, dropping it into her lap unceremoniously. She read the title, How to Awaken the Witch Within You, gasping at the implied possibilities.
“You want to become a good witch, Miss Upland? Start by unlocking the supernatural forces within you. Who knows? Maybe some actual talent will emerge in the process.”
Galinda clutched the book to her chest and beamed with understanding. “I will, Madame Morrible! I’ll find my inner magic, I promise!”
She looked to Elphie for reassurance and was bolstered by the squeeze of her palm.
“I think that’ll be all for today, ladies,” Morrible concluded with a weary wave, “I was out far too late last night at a rather wicked ballroom.” She winked at the girls with a hint of mischief, and dismissed them.
Once they were safe in the hallway, Galinda returned the ranunculus to its rightful place.
Fiyero lounged impatiently on a bench while he waited for Galinda and Elphaba to emerge from Morrible’s seminar. After that revelatory study session, he’d gone to visit Feldspur at the stables to ease his mind and debrief his equine companion on all things Ozdust.
The Horse had been happy to let his prince ramble about his adventures, but he’d been especially pleased to learn more about that lovely, feisty lady from the foliage. Fiyero had kept remembering reasons to rant about the green girl, and Feldspur was puzzled by the diametric ways he’d described her demeanor, somehow both aggravating and alluring. Human nature was forever confusing to him, so he didn’t question the prince’s preoccupation.
Fiyero was on the verge of a nap when Elphaba and Galinda finally emerged onto the quad hand in hand, the very picture of harmonious partnership.
They work well as a pair, Fiyero thought as he met them halfway.
“My budding sorceresses! How’d it go?” Fiyero asked. Galinda had filled him in on the origins and purpose of her wand when he’d stopped by that morning to return it.
“She did wonderfully,” Elphaba answered quickly, sparing Galinda the discomfort of explaining Morrible’s appraisal.
“Well, don’t start casting spells on me, alright?” Fiyero joked as they meandered through the afternoon crowd. Elphaba flashed her palm at him theatrically in response.
“Boom! I’ve bewitched you for all eternity!”
Fiyero grunted and clutched his heart, pretending to stumble as he walked on. Elphaba cackled in her special way, and Galinda rolled her eyes with affection at their foolish feud.
When the girls got back to their dorm, Galinda collapsed face-first onto her mattress, a muffled, exhausted moan escaping her lips. She’d never exerted herself so much in a single day, and novice sorceresses needed their rest. She curled up properly on the bed for a catnap, letting herself be carried away by dreams of bubbles and ballgowns.
Galinda’s dainty snore was the soothing background noise Elphaba needed to decompress from the day, lounging on their divan as she caught up on some reading. However, the wispy wheezes soon lulled the green girl into a slumber of her own, her book nestled under her chin.
When Elphaba woke, the sun had set, and her roommate had disappeared. The clock on her nightstand told her it was half past the seventh hour, and the clock in her stomach told her that it was long past time for dinner.
Elphaba hurried to the dining hall, hoping to make it before dinner service concluded and she’d be forced to scavenge for a stray apple. Pushing open the large wooden doors, she was unsurprised to find the dining room mostly empty at the late hour. However, Elphaba was amazed to see the four patrons taking up residence at the center table.
Galinda, Fiyero, Boq, and Nessarose sat together enjoying their meals, casually chatting with a familiarity Elphaba was unaccustomed to.
“Elphie, you made it! Get over here!” Galinda shrieked with joy, patting the seat next to her eagerly. The green girl complied, and her roommate rewarded her with an affectionate smile. This was the second time she’d saved Elphaba a seat that day, and Galinda relished in the kinship, determined to keep holding space for her.
“When I woke from my nap, you were fast asleep, and I didn’t want to interrupt your rest,” Galinda explained, passing her a tray full of steaming Shiz cuisine. “I was prepared to smuggle you some dinner if need be, but now you’re here!”
Elphaba smiled in appreciation, digging into her meal as the others carried on their conversation, admittedly content to be surrounded by companions at mealtime.
“We were just starting to discuss where our next social outing should be,” said Fiyero as he toyed with his own food. “I think the Peach and Kidneys sounds like a good time.”
“za beash inn kinease?” Elphaba asked, her mouth full of mashed potatoes. Fiyero grinned at her deficient table manners.
“It’s a pub in town. Not nearly as scandalocious as Ozdust, but I hear the music’s fresh and the ale is strong.”
Suddenly Nessarose perked up. “Back home, there’s a pub near Colwen Grounds called The Wilted Tulip.” Nessa paused to giggle at the name. “Father says it’s a place for degenerates and drunkards, but I’ve always wanted to go,” she explained with a sheepish smile.
“You’d fit right in, Fiyero,” Elphaba teased as she took a sip out of her golden goblet. The prince narrowed his eyes at her in jest, but carried on with the planning.
“So it’s settled then, the Peach and Kidneys tomorrow night?” Most of the group hummed their agreement, but Boq was still resistant to his new rule-breaker lifestyle.
“Don’t you think we’re pushing our luck a bit, sneaking out again so soon?” No matter how desperate he was to breathe the same alcoholic air as Galinda, his fear of expulsion and exile back to Munchkinland cooled his wanton desires.
“Well, if we get kicked out, we can always reconvene at The Wilted Tulip,” Fiyero reassured him as he nudged Nessarose playfully.
That settled it, and they continued their dinner with an appetite for more than just food. They buzzed with the anticipation of rousing escapades and comfortable fellowship, the five of them unofficially forming a cozy sort of clique. The wholesome intimacy was a novel experience for all.
It was a charmed circle, indeed.

here it is! the wicked movie review.
Part 1: spoiler free
I’ll start by saying I’m pleasantly surprised. Given the previous few years of musicals to movie adaptations, I didn’t have the highest of expectations. I loved Jon M. Chu’s work on Crazy Rich Asians but I thought his adaptation of In The Heights had lots of pacing issues. With almost 3 hours of only act I, I was concerned about wasted time, but I’ll say that pretty much every minute of Wicked Part 1 was well used and the story flowed well. My friends will tell you I’m no big fan of some of Galinda’s costumes but there were plenty of them in the rest of the movie were well made and looked good. Ariana Grande also impressed me with her acting choices and vocal chops, which I had low expectations for. Cynthia Erivo’s voice was fabulous. What it comes down to is Jon M. Chu understood the assignment. I give this movie adaptation an A.
In depth spoiler thoughts below the cut.
Part 2: spoiler city.
Cast
Ariana Grande really surprised me with her vocal chops. I’d only seen a little of her Sam and Cat acting and heard her pop music, so I wasn’t super impressed with her voice but she really nailed it with the opera and the musical style singing. Her acting choices were fun to watch and the felt true to the Galinda energy that is the role in act I. I kind of wish they curled her hair more since it was varying levels of curled throughout the movie but I thought it looked best during What Is This Feeling, but that’s a personal preference. Her comedic timing was excellent throughout the entire movie, though she picked the hair toss that’s really big which I thought was an interesting choice. Overall I really was pleasantly surprised by her competency with the role.
Cynthia Erivo I liked from Harriet but also didn’t know her full singing ability. I thought she did a great job bringing out the multiple layers of Elphaba’s personality and she played the role in a way different than I’d seen on stage. I’m used to a more jaded, feisty and loud Elphaba but Cynthia was more quiet and reserved, but not in a way that took away from the character. She’s still sharp tongued and smart, but more like a cool thunderstorm with occasional loud claps than the raging fire I’m used to. She did a really awesome job with the balance of sharp to soft that Elphaba tends to need in order to be believable.
Nessa and Fiyero were great. Fiyero was cocky and extra before the Lion scene and more thoughtful afterward and always had a little chemistry with Elphaba, which makes it feel natural when we get to I’m Not That Girl. Nessa is played so well as a girl who wants to be treated like everyone else. She insisted that nobody help her when she needs to go somewhere and is visibly upset when people are moving her and, in a sense, controlling her when she wants to be self reliant for once after years of being babied by her father and nanny.
Choices
There were some choices throughout that I thought were a little strange though. I didn’t like the flash through all the different points with Galinda during No One Mourns the Wicked. 1) they didn’t show the scenes with Glinda from act II that happen before the song takes place and 2) it felt kind of out of context if you haven’t seen the film before. If you have, you can remember the moments Glinda is flashing back to but having seen it the first time, I didn’t like it.
Additionally they made the silver shoes belong to Elphaba and Nessa’s mom. I don’t know if I liked it or not but I thought it was a strange choice and I sort of prefer when it wasn’t and they were specially made for Nessa by her father, but I see how adding their mother to their significance makes them more important to both sisters.
I actually liked that the Animals walked on all fours. In both Wicked the novel and L. Frank Baum’s Oz, Animals were sentient and could speak and think, but they were still not humans and therefore walked on all fours. I also liked how at Shiz they had little pieces of technology around that allowed Dillamond to teach, like turning on the projector and closing the blinds. It easily could’ve gone too Zootopia if they had them on their hind legs.
Additionally I liked the inclusion of a nanny character in the childhood scenes. Not only does it feel like a little nod to the novels, where Elphaba was cared for by Nanny, and while the book Nanny was more tough love than the character included in the movie, I thought it added to the emphasis of rejection from her parents. I also thought it was a cool choice for her to be a Bear, so it could narratively added to Elphaba’s care of Animals later on in the story.
I loved how they handled the Dancing Through Life scene where Elphaba turns up in the hat. It really feels more intense with the way everyone is laughing, staring, mocking Elphaba and I absolutely loved how when Galinda joined her, her friends tried to stop her. It really showed how Galinda could be risking her popularity to show kindness to Elphaba, and how in this situation it paid off. It’s probably one of my favorite scenes in the movie. And more as a smaller note, I thought it was fun that during the whole song, Fiyero essentially seduced the entirety of Shiz. Sexuality is not an issue in Oz.
Costumes
I’ve said it to a few people but I don’t like the movies Bubble Dress. I’ve been trying to figure out for weeks what specifically I dislike about it, but after a lot of thought it’s the skirt. It uses too much tulle when I feel like for Glinda’s outfits, they should be using more silks or satins. I also really hate the wand they gave Glinda, it feels like a cheap Spirit Halloween toy rather than an expensive movie prop.
Both Elphaba and Galinda were wearing more formal attire you could almost call business casual while at Shiz, but I didn’t like how they were the only two not conforming to the uniform colors. Galinda by far was worse in this department, with her pink and lavender outfits, but Elphaba was also wearing slightly off shades of blue. It felt like they were imitating Wednesday and I didn’t like that choice. The outfits themselves were fine and I liked the cut and fit of the costumes, just not the color.
Galinda was in, by far, too much pink. I understand that pink is her iconic color that they always use in her merch, but it was too much. When you have Galinda constantly in pink, it takes away from the flair of when she wears it. It also feels a little childish of her to only wear one color, or at least cinematically elementary.
Overall the costumes were fine, but I kind of wish they chose a costume designer who had more experience in fantasy shows. They picked an artist who has only made costumes for period pieces, and it being their first foray into fantasy shows. I obviously have more to say about Galinda’s costumes, being a Glinda rper, but I have a lot of thoughts on the choices with the fabric especially that I didn’t like. There was altogether too much sheer and tulle fabrics in both leads costumes.
Music
Overall, I thought they did a great job with the music. It was well orchestrated for a full scale film soundtrack. I know they said they sang live onset but I think it’s a little obvious sometimes that (I think) they used a recording over the film to get perfectly clear sound. Maybe it was just me but I thought it looked a tiny bit lip synced at times rather than live sung.
This may have just been the theater I was in, but the sound mix for No One Mourns The Wicked sounded a little muddy to me. It’s the only song that did but as the camera was panning out of the witch’s tower and back to what looked like Munchkinland while the intro music played, the audio mix just felt a little off. It really could be the speakers at the theatre though, I opted for the regular tickets and not Dolby for my first pass at the movie.
The singing itself was excellent. I was surprised by how youthful Cynthia’s voice sounded, and I already talked under casting about how pleasantly surprised I was that Ariana had the vocal chops for Glinda. I also said (mostly as a joke) that if Ariana started doing runs through the movie, I’d leave. I’m happy to say both she and Cynthia generally sung it straight, and any runs they added generally had a good effect on the music. I won’t be buying the movie soundtrack, but I really did think it sounded great. I’ll definitely be purchasing the movie and using it to test new video watching setups the way I was previously using The Greatest Showman.
Conclusion
I will be seeing Wicked again. At least once, possibly twice depending on what my friends want to do. It was a genuinely enjoyable experience where it felt like seeing Oz again for the first time. Jon M. Chu truly understood the assignment and did the musical justice. If you saw the movie recently come talk to me, I’d love to talk about the movie more.

Miraculous Tales: Meiling (Marinette)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
APPEARANCE
Meiling is a Chinese-French teenage girl of average height who looks like a perfect combination of her parents, inheriting her mother’s softer features and black while also inheriting her father warm beige skin tone and equally warm brown eyes.
HAIRSTYLES
Meiling tends to wear her hair in simple yet cute hairstyles, like pigtails and twin braids. Most of her hair accessories are light pink bows with the occasional hairclips and headbands.
Tumblr media
LOOKBOOK
Meiling's clothes are very feminine-coded but also very eclectic, given that most of them were outfits that she herself created since she first learned fashion design. She has a very cute vibe to her outfits that follows aesthetics like soft girl, colorful streerwear, and Chinese streetwear.
Tumblr media
BACKSTORY
Cheng Meiling is a French-Chinese girl who has lived in Jiangxi, China up until the last year when she moved to Paris and live with her maternal grandparents, uncle, and cousin Yumei. The main reasons that she moved to Paris were to further pursue her love for fashion and because her parents believed that she has potential that their countryside village can’t really offer her.
During her first year at Lycée Françoise Dupont, she was already shy to begin with and being the new student who just moved from a remote village in China didn’t exactly help her settle her nerves. Thankfully, her new classmates were pretty supportive and helped her adjust to her new life as a Parisian.
One classmate, however, didn’t take the same approach as the others. Colette Bourgeois, the Mayor’s daughter and one of the most fashion forward students in Dupont.
Now at first, Colette was pretty nice to Meiling, recognizing her a fellow fashion lover and an aspiring fashion designer. However, as the school year went on, Colette started to lose her spot as top student and most fashionable to Meiling. By the end of it, Colette and Meiling became rivals and enemies (think Galinda and Elphaba’s starting relationship) where Chloé would use her money and status to pull pranks on Meiling.
PERSONALITY
Meiling is a spunky, bright, and outgoing young girl. But that wasn't always the chance. During her first year in Paris, she was much more shy and reserved as she knew no one there. It was thanks to her new friends, she was able to open up much more. Meiling is someone who is always willing to lend a helping hand, whether it be helping her classmates with struggling subjects or helping her uncle with his private chef jobs.
She still struggles with self-confidence, often times quick to panic and becomes more clumsy and nervous when she's all over the place. Thankfully, having Tikki as additional support helped her remain much calmer when dealing with stressful situations and standing up for herself against those like Colette.
LADY LUCK
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Being the newest holder of the Ladybug Miraculous, Meiling has become Lady Luck, one of Paris' newest superheroes.
APPEARANCE
As Lady Luck, her black hair becomes more blue with her warm brown eyes are now a bright blue, now resembling eyes of a bug. After accepting her role as a superhero, her simple spandex-like outfit changed into one that resembles a red traditional Chinese qipao donned in ladybug spots plus black pants. Her hair is styles in twin buns, each with a long, red ribbon that give off the impression of twin antennas.
PERSONALITY
As Lady Luck, Meiling's personality does a total 180. She's much more calm and level-headed with how she approaches things. To her, the biggest focus when dealing with Pergue is to stop the villain and make sure there is very little damage as possible, building and civilian wise. She wants to be sure that no one is seriously hurt by the Pergue attacks, seeing how bad the damage they often leave behind without remorse.
She is much more responsible and put together as Lady Luck, especially with her interaction with the police, who she shares a very neutral relationship. This is mainly due to how seriously she takes her role as Lady Luck, leading her to sometimes scold the others for being too laid-back while on the job.
But deep down, there is a part of Lady Luck that is wondering if she's really up for the role she accepted. She worries if what her and her team have been doing is actually making an effort and not just delaying the inevitable.

JUST CAME BACK FROM WICKED!!!! HOW DID THEY SOME HOW MAKE IT GAYER
Spoilers
OMG THE LOATHING SCENE!!! IT'S ALWAYS BEEN MY FAVORITE FROM THE MUSICAL SO I WAS LIKE PRACTICALLY SHAKING WAITING FOR THE MOMENT WHERE THEY'D START WRITING THE NOTES TO THEIR PARENTS!! AND IT ABSOLUTELY DID NOT DISSAPOINT! IT WAS ABSOLUTELY ONE OF THE BEST SCENES OF THE MOVIE AND I WILL BE WATCHING IT AT LEAST ANOTHER MILLION TIMES
THE DANCE SCENE ALMOST MADE ME CRY!! Like I was in there tearing up while my sister is over here whispering "this is corny as hell" like omg it hurt so much. Galinda being the one to wipe away her tears. Being the only one seeing how much pain she was in. The only one who understands her when everyone else was laughing. The way there was barely any dialog in the scene. It hurt way too much than I expected it to.
Omg POPULAR???? LIKE YES ARI ATE THAT!!! GALINDA IS SUPPOSED TO BE "TOO MUCH" SHE'S SUPPOSED TO BE CHAOTIC!! SHE'S SUPPOSED TO BE JUMPING UP AND DOWN OVERLY EXCITED AND MAKING PEOPLE LAUGH!! THAT'S AN IMPORTANT PART OF HER CHARACTER!! IT MEANS SOMETHING TO HER CHARACTER!! HER ABILITY TO SHIFT BETWEEN PEPPY AND SERIOUS IS WHY SO MANY PEOPLE LOVE HER CHARACTER AND I ALREADY KNOW THOSE WHO AREN'T THEATER NERDS WILL NOT GET THAT!!
THE WAY THEY WERE LAYING NEXT TO EACH OTHER!! ELPHABA'S FONDNESS AT THE WAY GALINDA GOT UPSET ABOUT NOT BEING TOLD A SECRET!! THAT SMILE SHE RESERVES JUST FOR HER!! I CAN'T BROO 😭😭
Omg and the iconic lines "pink goes good with green" or "you're beautiful" like my heart 😭😭 I can't!!
Omg and the use of the word mashes it was such a small detail but every time I heard one of them It just goes to show that they did their homework for this.
Also the going away scene "I hope you get what your heart desires -Galinda" like how do I explain how much that meant to me? Because like it meant a lot to me and idek why but it did.
Not to mention DEFYING GRAVITY like that entire scene deserves a post of its own and I'm not even going to touch it yet until I rewatch the movie at least 20 more times!!

shiz era gelphie headcanons........ i must Know them........
oooOOOO headcanon ask! a reason to go batshit insane! perfect!
Elphaba has a nook in the library. It's hers. You might think it's hard to reserve a public space, but she has done it. She has spent too much time in that godforsaken place not to make everyone aware of this informal claim she has over her corner of the library.
It used to be in the far corner of the third story of Crage Hall's library, but once Glinda started spending afternoons with Elphaba, she forcibly made her relocate her den to a sunny spot next to a bay window where Glinda can people watch, draw, or read while Elphaba goes about her shady business (reading non fiction for fun).
This kinda came across in my Acts of Service fic, but Elphaba likes her tea strong but Full of Sugar (Sweet Tooth!Elphie is my drug) while Glinda likes it more mellow and with a dash of milk.
The two of them have one of those "I cook, you do the dishes" set up in the mornings. Glinda gets them both tea, biscuits and what not, while Elphie makes the bed and pulls their chairs together so they can have a quick breakfast together before going about their respective days.
Glinda is an early bird who will wake at any minor inconvenience and have nightmares. Elphaba is a night owl who will stay up to ungodly hours of the night and appear completely refreshed the next morning (this appearance is a lie, her usual baseline of constant exhaustion just makes it hard to notice.)
Okay im done now akjsdhak

I know this is a big ask but...for ALL your romantic fos, 🫂 - How does your F/O comfort you when you're upset? How would you comfort them?
@soulnottainted -grips my 20 f/os tightly- I AM TAKING THIS CHALLENGE KELS WE ARE RUNNING WITH IT
How does your F/O comfort you when you're upset? How would you comfort them?
CLANCY + TORCH - Clancy holds me in his arms and kisses my forehead, rocking me back and forth and humming a song in my ears so I can calm down. Torch would try to find me little trinkets around camp to cheer me up and just be at my side in solidarity.
I comfort them BOTH by providing a lot of physical touch/affection they're not used to having. It's reassuring for them to be able to keep me in their arms to stay grounded.
CLARK + BRUCE - Bruce buys me things he knows I like. My favorite meal, a cute little trinket of a show I'm into, or anything similar! He's bad at comforting but he'll at least try to cheer me up. Clark is a lot more 'we'll sit down and talk this out' because he values open communication and is kind of the messenger of our relationship. He likes to hear my feelings and talk it out so it seems less intimidating to me and I appreciate him for it!
I comfort Bruce with lots of hugs and I just let him shower me with kisses and hold me close on bad nights. Clark likes to go out with me to a coffee shop to distract us with positive memories instead. Kill it with Kindness and whatnot u//w//u
DANNY - Doesn't. Just makes fun of me and then tries to get me to forget about it by stabbing me or something. We don't TALK about our feelings we just make each other worse 😔
JAX - He'd tease me about what makes me upset/tries to make me laugh but if it fails he just gives up and sits at my side and begrudgingly is like 'if you...want to talk about something...i guess i'll listen.' (He does listen, though, and it helps <3)
Jax doesn't like it when I comfort him too much, but when we do its in private in one of our rooms, and he likes to hug me and let me play with his ears so he can feel safe.
HUGHIE - SO BAD SO AWKWARD but does his 100% best! Puts his whole Hugh-ussy into it!!! He just sits with me, rubs my back, and tries to say things that usually come out 10x worse but eventually gets there.
I try to help him talk things out when he's upset. He's very spazzy/impulsive so I usually ask him about things and help connect the dots as to WHY he's upset so we can figure stuff out.
GALINDA - My girl buys me new art supplies and books but doesn't read the labels or titles when she does she just shows up in my dorm one day with handfuls of pink wrapped presents like 'YOU WERE SAD SO I BOUGHT YOU THE ART ROOM'
I offer to go shopping and spend time with her when she's upset in return! I carry all of her bags and tell her how beautiful she looks in clothes that she tries on and float behind her like a lovesick puppy to fuel her ego ;//v//;
ELPHABA - A bit worse than Galinda, especially when my s/i for her is more quiet/reserved. I think she'd give me head pets tho :3
For her I would find her poppies and build a beautiful boquet for her with colors representing different meanings of flower and offer them to her in a cute black parchment paper with green bow
RAY - The only way he knows how to comfort me is if he offers to let me beat him for 5 minutes with a baseball bat this man doesn't know how to do feelings.
Same for the other way around. He's sad I'm still going to beat him with a baseball bat (me and ray have a very strange relationship)
DIRK - OH MY SWEET KING OF AVOIDING EMOTIONS he will listen to me talk about my problems ALL DAY and while he's not great at giving advice/sounding empathetic he really does try to listen and just let me get stuff out! Sometimes he builds little robots for me and sends them through time/space as little gifts with love letters telling me to keep on trucking.
If I can wiggle his emotions out of him though I usually go on video call with him if we're far away and just sit there quietly and parallel play w him. If we're in person, same thing but our shoulders are touching uwu
MICHAEL - He doesn't understand human emotions well, but if I am upset for whatever reason he doesn't necessarily HAVE an interest in it? He'll just try to find something new to cheer me up. Maybe even sit and watch my favorite movie with me!
He genuinley doesn't get upset I think and if he does its just a pout that I can pat away with my hand on his cheek hehe
SAM - Buys me my favorite gas station food on the road :3
I just f*ck him
DAMIAN - He makes bone necklaces for me out of my favorite types of teeth. Sometimes he engraves them with our names and hearts!
I spend time with him in his mortuary helping him label dead bodies sometimes and just spending time in the same room makes him happier when he's upest
ELEVEN - We go on an adventure to a planet he KNOWS I'll love and that will help me forget about what made me upset. He loves to surprise me with events or hobbies in time and space he knows I'll thrive in.
I make him fishfingers and custard and we eat it together while I let him infodump about his complaints about human history (he has a lot of them)
CHROLLO - 'You wanna go kill someone?' is his usually suggestion (it helps)
(I suggest the same thing)
ROSEMARY - My poor baby girl gets so nervous when she sees me upset :(. She offers to play board games with me while we put on some records and a fire and we just relax together.
She likes it when I let her cry on my shoulder and get her emotions out. I wrap her in my arms and let her cry while kissing her head.
LEONE + BRUNO - We all drink limoncello and go on a relaxing date at a little cafe somewhere in Italy! We don't like to stress about things so any upset any of us get we try to relax it off whenever we can and just remember that we're together and happy uwu
WRECKER - He's scoopin Rowin up in his big ol' arms and twirling him around like no tomorrow! Smothering him in kisses and making SURE he only focuses on how loved he is with his family!
Rowin in return gives Wrecker a lot of kisses and really pretty rocks he finds on random planets.
