Let's talk about Stream Ripley and TLOVM Ripley.

(Spoilers for Critical Role Campaign 1 and The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 under the cut.)

What’s The Difference?

Stream Ripley has no extensive backstory or Freudian excuse. Instead, the woman’s actions and words paint the picture of a classic mad scientist. Her home empire did not support her ambitions, so she got pissy and aligned with fugitives from said empire to further her goals.

She’s an admitted supremacist; during her fight with Vox Machina, she tells Percy that they (humans) stand above the other races on their ingenuity. Percy does not grant this the dignity of a response.

As I mentioned here, TLOVM left out a detail from Ripley’s story: how she designed a black powder weapon when Percy invented them. In the show, it’s unclear, but in the stream, it’s explicit she copied his work.

Ripley and Percy

Since she couldn’t have devised it herself, stealing Percy’s idea ties him to her destruction. She unleashes the black powder weapons wherever possible, not just for her petty revenge and aspirations but because Orthax tells her it will drive Percy mad. And she's all about that.

In contrast, Percy doesn’t spread his invention beyond Whitestone but keeps a squad of riflemen to defend it. He understands having and using black powder weapons will lead to their propagation, but this never stops him. Percy knows the potential harm his creation could cause but stops right before he would take the steps to truly prevent it.

Stream Ripley is far more depraved than Percy, yet still reminiscent of him. That's what makes her effective. Two young people who became consumed with indiscriminate, destructive revenge after the death of their families? Sharing similarities? Not shocking. But Percy sharing similarities and a connection through their designs with a woman whose immense ego, pettiness, murderousness, carelessness, spite, callousness, and supremacism fuel her proliferation of such a dangerous stolen idea?

That is far juicier.

Ripley raises the question of how far Percy might fall. Is it possible for him to turn into her? Or something even worse? She stole his invention; he has far more destructive potential than she does.

How responsible is he for his ideas falling into her hand? How irresponsible was he for creating and using it? Someone was going to replicate his gun at some point, and he knew it.

According to Taliesin, for Percy, it was inevitable. The question was never if but when.

Consistency

This is the narrative advantage of making an antagonistic foil simple and wicked. But there’s a practical advantage as well. If Ripley’s just fantasy Elon Musk, she doesn’t need extra exposition. She’s characterized; we’re done. There are no questions about her backstory or her motivations that need answering.

But TLOVM’s flashback to her past raises questions.

For stream watchers, did Delilah help raze Ripley’s home with the other Assembly members? If so, did Ripley know? Did Ripley know and not care? Was Ripley even aware Delilah was ex-Assembly? Was Delilah even a member of the Assembly in TLOVM’s canon?

For show-only watchers, how exactly did a woman who supposedly wants to make it easier for the common folk to fight back against wizards wind up torturing children in the employ of a wizard? While there are potential reasons and explanations, none are provided.

That flashback introduced wrinkles to the story with those unanswered questions. Keeping this villain simple would have kept her more consistent.

It's possible to make a complex, complicated villain with contradictory motivations...but Ripley didn't have the right set-up for that, and S3 didn't have the time to put all of her new, disparate pieces together into a cohesive whole.

And in her case, why would you want to? It robs her of her efficacy and wastes time the show doesn't have.

And yeah, keeping this villain simple wouldn't have just tightened up the plot and her character, it would've saved precious time.

Time

Because putting the wrinkles aside, what do we get from this flashback? What do we get from dragging Ripley's defeat out? Admittedly, the fight on the boat was well-made, and we get a sneak peek of the Cerberus Assembly, but neither was worth giving up the group kill Ripley earned in the stream. Nor was it worth the time that could’ve been saved ending her life an episode earlier.

Keeping Ripley simple does not just make her a better villain who serves Percy’s characterization by being his dark reflection. It doesn’t just make it easier to keep her story consistent. It saves time. And for an adaptation of Vox Machina’s story, time is paramount. There are seven protagonists and a ton of plot to get through; TLOVM can't afford to waste a second.

This country will very soon become nothing more than a pseudo-dictatorship, with Trump at the head and his incompetent cronies beneath him, allowing Trump to dl anything he damn well pleases.

Elon Musk is one of the funniest yet most depressing examples. This goddamn nepo baby buffoon who somehow even smiles wrong will soon be the head of a new government department Trump made just for him, its acronym being a reference to a shitty memecoin.

He will also eventually replace the current FBI director with one of his fucking loyalists named Kash Patel, a man who actively criticizes investigations into Trump and has accused the "deep state" of undermining Trumo and making his power and reputation weaker while he was in office the first time. He's called for mass firings within the FBI, robbing civil servants of their jobs, and he may possibly use the FBI's power to silence any media that criticizes him. While that last one is just a fear, I have no doubt it will happen, given how these scumbags act.

Unfortunately, this is a pattern of hirings from Trump. He will hire nothing but his ardent supporters, allowing him to have full control of the entire government. It's only one more example of the broken government we have today, and a painful demonstration of the consequences of the election. This shouldn't have happened; Trump should be in jail, where he fucking belongs. However, wishful thinking won't get us anywhere. I urge all who see this post to be better. Protest, vote, fight back. Help those in need who will be disadvantaged and hurt by the laws that will soon be put in place. Rise above Trump and his supporters; revel in knowing that you are better than them.

The coming days will be ugly. Yet I feel it’s my job to remind you that, bad as this is, we are not Weimar Germany, and this is not 1933. Trump and his lieutenants aren’t battle-hardened trench fighters, they’re Elon Musk and a coterie of half-enthusiastic half-frightened billionaires who got rich gambling on apps to let you rate your classmate’s tits. Their foot soldiers are used car salesmen from Encino, not Freikorps. The United States is not starving to death and crippled by war, it’s irritated and anxious because its working people have been robbed blind by those same billionaires.

The one thing we do have in common with Weimar is that our fascists now find themselves at the head of a state that capitulated to them not out of enthusiastic consent but exhaustion, cowardice and above all a feeling that it didn’t really matter.

That last one, the feeling that nothing matters, the system is fucked, there’s no point in engaging or organizing- that is the most powerful weapon they have right now. Because that feeling stops you and everyone else from opposing them. From interrupting as they reach out, yet again, to take something you love or need.

President Biden has pardoned his son Hunter, explaining in a letter that “raw politics” had influenced his son’s prosecution and led to a “miscarriage of justice.”

The raw politics of Washington D.C. as we head into another four years of rule by Donald Trump involves pre-planned miscarriage of justice. The Project 2025 plan that Trump claimed he had nothing to do with – before appointing four of its authors to his Cabinet – has an entire section devoted to exacting revenge on political opponents of Trump.

It is a cliché to say that the gloves are off, but that is the situation Donald Trump has purposefully created. He has threatened to investigate and prosecute anyone who was ever involved in investigating and prosecuting him. That would include Robert Mueller and his entire team of investigators and federal prosecutors. Of course, special counsel Jack Smith and his entire office, which includes FBI investigators and federal prosecutors, some of whom came out of retirement to work on the Trump investigation, are on Trump’s list for retribution. Kash Patel, Trump’s prospective FBI Director, has given several interviews about his plans to investigate anyone who has ever so much as picked up a pencil to bother his master.

Joe Biden has his work cut out for him. He should empower an entire staff in the White House to begin working on blanket pardons for all the people mentioned above, plus members of the House of Representatives and the Senate who were involved in the two Trump impeachments and the House January 6 Committee.

The Biden pardon team should also take a serious look at the many reporters, columnists, and television news hosts who have stood up to Trump over the last eight years. That is another long list of people that Donald Trump has threatened to prosecute for simply doing their jobs as reporters, commentators, and cable news hosts.

That old aphorism “when they go low, we go high” was bullshit when it entered the political lexicon, and it’s a guarantee of a prison sentence at this point. There is no high road in the age of Donald Trump and his MAGA team of toadies and lackeys who are sworn to carry out the campaign of retribution Trump demands.

The Democratic Party isn’t just a political party anymore. It is an association of Americans who are under attack merely for their political beliefs. Loyalty to the Constitution and swearing to uphold its rights and guarantees of freedom has been turned into a crime by Donald Trump. People like Elon Musk and Leonard Leo are probably adding names to the list of enemies they would like to see behind bars for committing various “crimes” that aren’t crimes at all.

Nobody is safe. Trump has promised to build internment camps for undocumented immigrants he has declared war against. You won’t have to lack an American passport or work permit to be ushered into the walls of those camps once they’re built.

Trump has gone to war against the America we have known. We don’t need to ask ourselves what this country has done to deserve the war Trump has planned against us. Biden needs to deploy his pardon power as a weapon in that war, and the Democratic Party needs to start recruiting not only followers but fighters. This is going to be an ugly four years, and it is way past time to prepare ourselves.

I am having trouble paying attention to ANYTHING other than the collapse and end of the United States of America. It's happening RIGHT NOW.

I doubt most people realize how fucked up things are getting in America, but basically the entire system is breaking down around us.

Trump gave Elon Musk and whomever he chooses complete access to all governmental branches without any kind of security clearance or vetting.

Musk and his gang of 18-to-26-year-old groupies have used this to uniterally shut down numerous very important government branches and programs. USAID provides 50% of the foreign aid in the world, and they have been ordered to halt all actions. There are literally 100,000s of tons of food sitting in docks and in crates rotting because Elon and Trump won't let the food be delivered to the the starving communities who it was promised to.

Last week they shut down the Consumer Financial Protection Burueau — the only government oversight for banks that ensures that their investigators actually have to rule in YOUR favor if you are robbed of money or defrauded. Instead, banks are now free to tell you that if you become the victim of identity theft, it's your own fault and you're just absolutely fucked now! Banks are no longer secure.

All funding for research to universities and hospitals? CUT! It's fucking gone, thanks to Elon. Doctors are saying this will set back cancer research years - maybe decades - if it isn't turned around IMMEDIATELY. Without funding, all current experiment treatments are OVER. Without funding, current biological sample cannot be preserved and fucking DIE, killing studies that have been going on for years.

That cutting of funding includes all Health departments, who have been ordered not to talk each other. As a result, their attempts to curb the bird flu outbreak have been halted completely. Grocery prices have skyrocketed as there is no longer any system in place to prevent masses of livestock succumbing to bird flu. I just saw $13.99 for one dozen fucking eggs.

Earlier, you likely heard that Trump ordered that all federal funding be halted and frozen until reviewed. A judge then ordered that he couldn't do that — the budget was paid and approved by Congress already. However, reports are now coming in that the White House is ignoring the court orders and refusing to reinstate funding. "Head Start" pre-schools are shutting down as a result.

They are also making moves to end the Department of Education forever, which they have announced as a goal. No national educational standards so that no state is "forced" to teach people about the history of slavery or other "DEI" initiatives, according to Trump. History will be fully whitewashed and kids will be lied to from birth. After that, they're hoping to defund libraries.

The ignoring court orders thing is the most awful issue happening right now. Vice President J.D. Vance and a couple other Republican lawyers have come forth to say that judges who attempt to place any restraints on the executive branch are committing illegal acts and will be ignored/punished. But the judiciary literally exists to oversee our system of checks and balances; Vance and friends are full of shit.

Ah, but who enforces the judges' orders? U.S. Marshalls. Who are under the orders of the attorney general. The new attorney general is 100% loyal to Trump. You see the issue... ?

Judges are declaring things illegal in light of actual established checks and balances and rules. Trump and Musk are ignoring that they're declared illegal, and no one is enforcing the law to keep the judges' rules in effect.

In summation: - The law no longer matters. Even when something is declared illegal, the rule of law is ignored.

- Banks are no longer secure or safe.

- Hospitals, schools, pre-schools are losing funding/shutting down.

- YEARS of infectious disease research is being ruined/lost.

- We are leaving other countries who are dependent upon our assistance for food / medicine to starve and die.

- Farms are struggling as livestock (especially chickens) die en-masse while disease runs unchecked and the government has stopped trying to fight it.

- And of course, as per usual: If Trump or Musk are confronted about this, they just make up lies about it and provide zero evidence. Because their followers will always trust them, no matter how egregious the lies. No matter how many times they repeatedly lie. No matter if the lies even start to conflict with each other. The lying always works.

"America" is over. We are now forced to live in the crevasses of its rotting corpse.

Trump Most Likely Did Cheat, and Harris was supposed to be our President!!!!

Okay, this is going to sound like a big conspiracy, but I have been having this gut feel since the election. Also, feel free to debunk or add on. Sources are down below under the cut.

First of all, if you know anyone who didn't vote. Especially if one, they live in a swing state, two, registered to vote on Twitter to get $47, but didn't vote. Have them check if they voted recently.

Elon created the America PAC that gathered personal data [1,2].

Not only that, there was Trump's slip of the tongue, "He [Elon] knows those computers better than anyone... All those computers- all those voting computers..." [3].

There's a possibility that Elon used that personal information of others to vote for Trump.

Finally, there's Greg Palast, a well-known journalist who did some digging to see what happened with the voting. He found that Kamala was robbed of 3.5 million votes. [4, 5]

Now, I'm not saying all of this 100% factual, but a lot of this seems a bit too coincidental. Call me crazy, but I think the guy who said Biden cheated... cheated. I think this should be looked into.

wow. as a queer woman who has been and always will be on the left side of politics, and as a canadian who mourned the results of the 2024 american presidential election, i did not think it was even possible for me to have any less respect for donald trump, yet here we are. i am absolutely certain that he would have never spoken that way to putin or netanyahu, because he has nothing to gain from political leaders who have always had the same power hungry mindset as himself. this was not an attempt at peace talks, this was an attempt to bully and degrade president zelenskyy into submission and forcing him to give them more than what they are entitled to (which, btw, is NOTHING). and don’t get me started on that pathetic fucking loser that is jd vance who has nothing better to do than comment on zelenskyy’s wardrobe and tell him to say thank you to the american government for doing nothing but attempt to rob ukraine of their land and resources.

by no means do i think that justin trudeau has been a good prime minister—in fact, canada’s economy has been so fucking terrible during his time served, and i think resigning is the best thing he could have done at this point. however, it has been a very long time since canada has felt so unified under one government as they do right now as trudeau has dropped the gloves and is doing everything he can to not only defend his own country from donald trump’s reign of terror, but also supporting the other countries that are most definitely more threatened than we are. simply looking at the difference in treatment of president zelenskyy during meeting with trump in comparison to how he was treated by trudeau is so insane and speaks volumes about what sort of men are leading these countries.

donald trump is not a man, he is a boy in an adult’s body. a true man shows compassion and loyalty to those who have always shown it to them without question, and a true leader puts himself on the chopping block before his country, none of which he has ever shown nor do i believe he is capable of.
