[Day Four] First Elimination

Which leaves us with Eloise Anderson. She was VERY close to both Stephen & Mike, but just by a hair didn't quite make it. I felt like their personalities clashed a bit too much & it was hard for them to find anything in common. Alot of the time Eloise preferred to be by herself & do her own thing while everyone else was mingling.

Thank you so so much @droolski for submitting her; I wish I would've had more time to see more of her personality. I'm sure Fern would've at least ended up being friends with her & who knows, they may cross paths again the future!

The long awaited confrontation between Colin & Eloise Bridgerton over Penelope is here…

Eloise is so sure that Penelope tricked Colin into their betrothal that she becomes determined to get between them (because she’s Eloise & being self righteous and difficult is her thing). She’s harsh without remorse because she’s convinced Colin would never wed Penelope unless he was forced to and she says as much right to Pen’s face, accusing Penelope of blackmailing her brother into marriage.

Penelope is deeply hurt and she starts questioning whether she & Colin should go through with the marriage when his sister is so clearly against their union but Colin insists that he wants Penelope to be his wife and says he will handle Eloise.

Then Colin sets off to have a serious conversation with his sister.

Colin: How dare you speak to my fiancé the way you did earlier? Penelope is beside herself. You’ve wounded her deeply and should be ashamed of yourself Eloise!

Eloise : You clearly do not know her as well as you think brother, I am doing you a favor and looking out for you!

Colin: You should grow up and understand that you do not know everything and sometimes your impulse to outwit and dress down can be harmful. Why would you not simply speak to your oldest friend to understand why she acted in secret and try to empathize with her. Your circumstances are very different from Penelope’s, and you know this! She has no one to help or guide her or make her feel cared for, or appreciated. She has had struggles which you, Eloise Bridgerton have not ever had to face. And all she has had for years was your friendship and our family. The things you said to her were so cruel I am ashamed to call you my blood. She thinks you hate her, have you stopped to think about that? She is not close to her own sisters, you are the sister of her heart and you know how she loves you and now she honestly believes you hate her. Penelope’s actions may have angered you El, but her intentions were good.

Eloise: Her intentions were to sell papers at the expense of our family and her own. She could have ruined me and your beloved Marina. How can you forget that so easily. She has acted selfishly for the sake of making money. She would sell out her own blood for coin. You deserve to know that that is the woman who has fooled you into a betrothal.

Colin: You insufferable know-it-all. Did you ever stop to think why your best friend would risk so much for the money you clearly begrudge her for earning? I’m certain you have not bothered to consider that her father was murdered over his gambling debts. Did it not occur to you that Pen was desperate to earn that money in order to support her family? Did you ever think why such an intelligent young lady would do something so dangerous as sneak around to print shops alone in secret? How easily she might have been attacked or harmed and nobody would have ever known what happened to her. And she hates herself for outing Marina. She never would have done it had I only listened when she warned me that Marina was in love with another man. Or if Marina herself hadn’t ignored Penelope’s constant pleading with her not to trap me.

Eloise: She should have told me! She should have trusted me!

Colin: The Queen herself was hunting for Whistledown with your help. Can you honestly blame her for keeping her secret?

Eloise: She should have had more faith in me and our friendship than that!

Colin: Says the friend who abandoned her the moment she found out. Pen was terrified of losing you, how can you not see that!? Damn it Eloise! And she was right to be afraid because you turned your back on her and never even thought to ask why she did it. I am warning you sister, you have two options here: make things right with Penelope or bite your tongue forever. Because you may be willing to lose her but I am not and if you continue to bully my fiancé or your cruelty leads her to call off our engagement, you shall lose more than your most devoted friend because of your childish cruelty. You will lose a brother as well, because I will never forgive you.

Eloise: Well, if those are my options, I believe that I finally have my answer now as to why you chose Penelope. Rest assured, I will set things right with her.

Colin: And what assumption have you made now El? What do you believe is my reason for marrying Penelope?

Eloise : The only reason I could ever accept brother, because you are in love with her.

Why was she putting herself at risk? Why on earth would she follow him when he clearly told her to stay away? Couldn’t she see that he got too worried when she was close to danger? Did she not see that Rick needed her to be alive to breathe himself and keep a clear mind? His thoughts were constantly spiraling and if he wouldn’t have taken down that man during the last second, then who knew what could have happened to her? Rick’s fingers were still trembling, still covered by the blood he had spilled by beating that asshole to death for threatening her and Eloise herself had that little cut of the knife he used on her by her neck. Why didn’t she learn to stay away from him? That he was dangerous?

She didn’t want to see it. She was blind to the dangers his hands withhold and still looked at him with the same adoring gaze she did during their secret nights even if they had been yelling at each other for minutes now. It could be any minute that walkers would reach them by all the noise they had created and then she put an end to it. An end to the shouting and his constant arguments that led simply nowhere by revealing to him what she really felt. It was like his heart skipped a beat. Like she disarmed him without even touching him and left him behind stunned, with hanging open lips and brows that were still deeply furrowed.

“You what?” He should have known. Should have seen it in the way she looked at him. Should have felt it when she whispered his name when they came and she sank into his arms after that, but Rick had been blind. Blinded over the months of trauma that didn’t allow him to see anything good in this world anymore, especially her love. Disbelief showed itself in form of a scoff and a shook of his head where he tried to collect his thoughts, but all that came up in him was panic. The fear that he could not protect her anymore if she would blindly follow him for love.

“Then you are a fool.” His gaze changed into something cold, into something threatening cause it was the only way he knew how to react if he wanted to protect her. Shove her off, reject her and tell her that none of this was the truth. His twitching fingers might have revealed that he fought himself here, that he only faked these words to protect her from herself and after all from him as well. “We should go back.” Without looking at her cause he didn’t dare, he started walking. Nearly as if he needed to run away from this cause he wouldn’t be able to stand her eyes now. But then he stopped as he passed her, fiddled with his fingers before he mumbled “don’t say that again. Don’t ever think that again El. It will only kill the both of us.” Just like it killed him in this moment to say that to her.

BRIDGERTON EPISODE TWO SPOILERS : to quote critical role’s brian w. foster BABY GOT BACKSTORIES in Shock and Delight.

This episode starts with ... not surprisingly a flashback. It’s a Simon Episode Folks. Unfortunately it’s the same one that we read in the prologue TD&I. Simon’s poor mother, desperate to have a son, gives her life to give her husband an heir. I am in LOVE with the way they weaved Lady Danbury into Simon’s childhood / connect with his mother. I think it was such a good way to tell this particular story and how Lady D took such an interest in Simon. I’ve said before that romance novels especially JQ’s can be very insular to the main characters, and I think it was such a good idea for the showrunners to expand on the people around them as they weave this love story. Every single flashback gave me the exact same feeling I had reading the prologue, learning about Simon’s stutter and his father reacting to it, telling everyone he was dead, Lady Danbury sticking up for him against his father. & yes, I cried in both versions. It’s so important for first time viewers to know WHY Simon makes the decisions he does that lead to the things that it does and they did it in such a compelling way. 

THE HASTINGS LINE ENDS WITH ME, is probably the mic drop of the season ( but we still have 6 eps ). 

THE ELOISE PROBLEM. it’s not a problem, she just steals literally every scene she’s in. Asking the whole fam basically about sex. Telling Penelope they have accomplishments to acquire. I’m loving that we’re getting to see Eloise want more because it’s in every single book including her own that Eloise is afraid of settling for less than what she knows she can accomplish, is smart enough to accomplish. She’s afraid of loving someone and losing them like her parents, and the inherent tragedy that came with too many births in her time. She’s afraid of watching the people around her settle because she wants better lives for them. She & Jo March & Elizabeth Bennet would be best friends & co-presidents of the ‘queer coded middle sister’s club ‘ ( they’re all the Main Character ). Two of my favorite scenes were 1) Benny & Eloise, two overlooked Bridgerton’s who want to rail against the expectations set before them because of who they are, sharing a sneaky bad kid cigarette together, sharing the knowledge that they both want more , 2) Eloise telling Daphne she remembers her mother giving birth to Hyacinth and almost dying ( more proof that A & D took on a ton of responsibility after their dad died ) despite Daphne’s efforts to keep her from it, and telling Daphne that she feels bad about ‘ the game of pretend she feels she has to maintain. ‘ 

Nigel can suck it & I don’t even feel bad that he got his ass beat. I feel, & i think i’ve said it before, so much of the issues between Simon/Daphne/Anthony & now Violet are that they don’t communicate in any kind of healthy way. Which doesn’t make for compelling television most of the time but it’s so frustrating to watch like simple things being able to be resolved if someone had just .... told the other person this info.

One thing I love about this show is how much more aware of themselves and their station women are in the show & how they know how to use that station to get SHIT DONE ( Violet using gossip/the truth to get out of the engagement to Nigel ). They’re not ever going to be out from under what the ton thinks or how the men that control their calendars and their engagements and their proposals ( this is a vague @ show!Anthony Bridgerton ), but what they do control & how they use that to their advantage is so great to see. 

WAS LADY WHISTLEDOWN REVEALED? no. SOME NOTES I TOOK DOWN : eloise: are you? benedict: are you? eloise: are you gay? benedict: yeah i’m gay are you gay? eloise: YES! / beat his ass simon x 2 ( abt anthony & nigel ) / WOMEN GET SHIT DONE / colin & benedict vaudville act coming soon  BEST SCENE OF THE EPISODE : simon beating the shit out of nigel berbrooke & eloise asking about sex were contenders but honestly ? it was the quiet conversation between eloise & benny. 

 Overall : 9/10

One of Dorothy's kid probably does some really sweet song that is just sugary.

Another does a broadway song, complete with dance moves.

Eloise sings a metal song as loudly as she can. Zalgo is so proud.

Lazari busts into a rap. Faster than Eminem. Smoother than Snoop. Just pure skill. And a whole breakdance break. Followed by a mic drop.

It is needless to say who wins.
