Here’s a Throwback that though I’m not trying to glorify it, I sure as hell never want to forget it! It was just one of the many similar stops I had to make between the ages of 17 and 24, the final happening in late 1986 with a release in early 1990. Riker’s Island, Queens House, Upstate, Camp Pharsalia, Auburn, Marcy, Mid-State, as well as a few others, with the bulk of my time being served at Collins Correctional, and then Queens Borough CF for work release. Going back a bit further, I remember when I used to play Football for the Elmjack Flyers in Elmhurst Queens, where the field was practically walking distance from the Francis R. Buono Memorial Bridge. Oh, you don’t know what that is? Well that’s the bridge that takes you over to the exclusive Riker’s Island. I too clearly recall, walking home after Football practice and watching the prison buses drive by, packed with their daily collection of alleged criminals, And yeah, of course we laughed and pointed, even gave them the finger every now again. I never noticed until today, but there’s a penguin statue in Jackson Heights! Apparently his name is Wink and someone in the neighborhood dresses him up depending on the holiday or event, like July 4th and Christmas! So, let me be totally honest… No, I did not watch last night’s game! In fact, I haven’t watched a game in over ten years. Oh don’t get it twisted, it’s not that I don’t like Football or know anything about it. In fact, I played in NY when I was in Junior High. It was for the Elmjack Flyers in Jackson Heights, Queens. I was a skinny kid, yup, I used to be skinny. I was one of the very few who didn’t have a parent there to support me. Well, Mom hated sports, and besides, that would’ve been weird. All my other friends had their fathers there, and it wasn’t until I started writing this post that I realized, yeah, I guess it did affect me. A few of the father’s tried to help me out, but of course, they had to tend to their own kids, who they were molding to be champs. Though Mom never came to any of my games or practices, she did get me anything I needed, well, sort of. I remember her buying me my first helmet, and how excited I was. I no longer had to dig through the piles of used helmets to find one that fit my skinny head. (Oh, did I mention I was once skinny? I did right, okay cool!) Anyhow, I got to practice the next day, and noticed Coach Vinny staring at me, and so of course I got nervous, I figured this was the day I’ve been dreading, when he finally realized that all I did was take up valuable bench space, and was gonna kick me off the team. But maybe now, since I got my own helmet, he’d see I was serious about playing. My heart pounded as he made his way toward me, “Where'd you get that helmet, son?” he asked. “My Mom bought it for me!” I replied, my voice, a mixture of pride and embarrassment. “Mind if I see it?”. I quickly pulled off my new shiny white helmet and placed it into his hands. “Hey Paul!” He called out to his assistant, after looking over my helmet. We won yet again today :) 6-2! Great pitching and the offense was so clutch today all around.

Unfortunately I K'ed for the first time this season through four games. 

--1 for 3 with 2 K's, an RBI, R and a SB.

On the bright side, I threw a runner out at home trying to score today haha. It was a base hit to the gap in left center, received a perfect throw from the center fielder and relayed it home from the shallow OF on a hop to gun out the runner trying to score from first. Catcher did a great job of blocking the plate, receiving the ball and applying the tag. Glad that a bunch of friends of mine saw it and were so hype. 

After today's unsatisfactory offensive display, I'm now hitting .728 and my OBP dropped to .786. OH WELL
