Genny was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.

She left this life suddenly on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2022, after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Genny was born in Bronson, Florida, Sept. 21, 1928, daughter of Geneva Berryhill Osteen and Leander (Lee) Alexander Osteen of Otter Creek Florida. She was their third child and only daughter. Her mother passed when she was only six years old.

School was one of her loves, along with books. She graduated with high honors and went on to attend Bob Jones University with a degree in Religion and History. In 1950 she graduated. She and a college friend traveled to Gilmer County West Virginia to teach Bible School for the summer, with a missionary for the American Sunday School Union, Glenn U. Kirkpatrick. After the summer she returned to North Carolina to teach a semester.

In December 1950, she returned to West Virginia and married Glenn Kirkpatrick. There was a huge snow storm that December that shocked the young Florida lady. Genny was a partner with him, in the American Sunday School Union, typing reports, putting out newsletters, teaching Sunday School, Bible School and Bible Camp. They had three children, Glenn Joel (Joey), Rebecca B. (Becky) and Robert William Paul (Bobby).

Summers were filled traveling from county to county, in West Virginia, having Bible Schools ending with a Bible Camp in August.

During the rest of the year, it was a different church or one-room schoolhouse each Sunday for Sunday School and preaching.

In all of her free time, she taught herself to drive and took a class at the Gilmer County Career Center to learn to work on cars. She never missed a band concert, choir concert or ball game that her children were in.

Genny worked for the Dept. of Human Services as a Social Worker, and then for the Area Agency on Aging at The Gilmer County Senior Citizens’ Center.

The bookworm in her, took her back to school at Marshall University for a Masters in Special Education and Learning Disabilities.  It was back to teaching, this time in the Gilmer County School system.

Special Olympics became a big part of her life. She loved working with the children and giving them new experiences. For 30 years, she was the Director of Special Olympics in Gilmer County.  When the house needed an addition, she built one on. Nothing could stop this lady.

When grandchildren came, there was plenty of love to go around. As with her children, she was always there for them. Stewarts Creek Church was her home church.

Genny served on the board of the Gilmer County Historical Society. The newsletter for the Gilmer County WV Retired School Employees was one of her projects she loved doing.

She was a member of the Martha’s and Mary’s of Gilmer County and received the Helping Hands Award. Others now saw what we always knew, she was the one behind the scenes lifting all the rest of us up.

Genny was preceded in death by her husband Reverend Glenn U. Kirkpatrick, her sons Joey and Bobby Kirkpatrick, her granddaughters Julia Erin Oppe and Oakley Monroe Kirkpatrick, her mother Geneva and father Lee Osteen, her brothers Lee and Richard Osteen.

Surviving are her daughter Becky and son-in-law Jim Oppe, grandchildren children Tiffany and her husband Mitch Davis their children Luke and Emma, Whitney Oppe and Woody Porter, Carrie and her husband Kevin Summers and son Wyatt, Tommy Kirkpatrick his wife Amber their children Keegan and Ava, Charlie Kirkpatrick, Tara and her husband Billy Eagleston and children Kylie and Landyn, and Chandra Kirkpatrick and her children Jade and Trinity. And Genny’s adopted families the Dorans and Pifers.  

A funeral service will be conducted at the Ellyson Mortuary, Inc., 2 Vanhorn Drive, Glenville, WV; 26351 at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, 2022, with Rev. Bill Hunt officiating. Burial will follow in the Meadow Lane Cemetery near Glenville. Friends will be received from noon-2 p.m.; Thursday at the mortuary in Glenville.

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE! On Tuesday I had a 6-month follow-up appointment with my oncologist. Everything checked out great and I was in a fantastic mood. Then, like many, I felt like I was punched in the gut and run over by a bus when the election results came in. Funny everyone said it would take days to get results, but our fate was sealed within a few hours. I have studied Project 2025 and as someone on Medicare and Social Security, I am very concerned. Also, after losing an adult child to suicide I receive emails from different prevention groups, and the number of gay and trans people taking their lives is increasing every day. People are updating the visas, and so many people who have lived here for years working to obtain citizenship are scared about being rounded up, put into camps, and deported. Women are being treated as property with the "Your Body, My Choice" movement, let alone fearing a nationwide abortion ban, a birth control ban, and IVF being challenged. Black people are receiving racist text messages about working on a plantation picking cotton. Add to that worry over how the new administration will handle the wars in Ukraine and Israel. No candidate is perfect but I never imagined I would see "Christians" cheering for very unlike Jesus behavior and a convicted rapist and con man who has shared confidential information with our enemies and other crimes sitting behind the resolute desk. I know inflation is still a problem, the border needs more control, there is a housing shortage, and there are other things to figure out but weighing what we are going to live with or die with now did our country make the right decision? We will see. We traveled about 3 hours away Friday night for the Cardinals Regional playoff game. The boys gave it everything they had and more but ended their season with a heartbreaking 29-28 loss. It was a fantastic season with 11 wins and just this one tough loss. There were tears shed but they have some wonderful memories from this year as do all the people who showed up every week to see them play and cheer them on. For Juniors like Kaden, the Varsity team has only lost 3 games in their high school careers and they should be just as strong next year. Kaden doesn't play a Winter sport so he will be hitting the weight room and getting ready for Track & Field in the Spring. As you know, I am beyond proud of my Kaden. How was your week? Fatica a non imprecare. Stringe i braccioli della sedia fino a farsi male le mani, vorrebbe prendere il quadro e lanciarlo fuori dalla finestra e sa che Albus – anche se solo dipinto – l’avrebbe capita.

Stringe la labbra così tanto da farsi male, ma si alza e si avvicina al dipinto.

Con una mano lo sposta rivelando il nascondiglio segreto dietro la tela, sapeva che c’era un buco nel muro, Potter l’aveva rivelato a tutti, ma non aveva controllato.

Troppo presa dalla ricostruzione della scuola, troppo impegnata a nascondere la vergogna e il senso di colpa.

[ad_1] Newswise — In the rural United States, an adolescent who drinks heavily has a 43% greater probability of carrying a handgun in the following year, according to a study published this month in The Journal of Rural Health.“While there has been a lot of research on this correlation in urban areas, little is known about the association between alcohol use, particularly heavy drinking, and handgun carrying in rural areas,” said lead author Alice Ellyson, an acting assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine and investigator in UW Medicine's  Firearm Injury & Policy Research Program.“Our study establishes a clear link between these two behaviors in rural areas, and there are evidence-based prevention programs to address both,” she said. Heavy drinking was defined as consuming five or more alcoholic drinks in a row at least once in the previous two weeks. The study involved a longitudinal sample of 2,002 youth ages 12 to 26 in 12 rural communities in seven states, including Washington. Survey responses were collected annually from 2004 to 2019 starting with children who were in fifth/sixth grades.The authors say their findings can inform strategies to discourage drinking and thereby decrease the likelihood of handgun-carrying among youth and young adults in rural areas. The findings, coupled with existing evidence-based approaches, might also offer key tactics to lower the homicide and suicide rates among adolescents in rural areas, the study concluded.The association between heavy drinking and gun-carrying also was evident (38% greater) among young adults ages 19 to 26, noted senior author Dr. Ali Rowhani-Rahbar, a professor of epidemiology at the UW School of Public Health and pediatrics at the UW School of Medicine. He is also the UW Bartley Dobb Professor for the Study and Prevention of Violence and the interim director of the UW Medicine's Firearm Injury & Policy Research Program at the University of Washington School of Medicine.The study did not break out the differences between male and female respondents nor did it address the respondents’ likelihood of firing the handgun, Rowhani-Rahbar said.He added that a major strength of the study was its longitudinal design, which allowed for the examination of handgun carrying after alcohol use.Understanding youth behaviors associated with carrying a firearm has significant safety implications. In 2020, suicide and homicide were among the leading causes of death among U.S. individuals ages 12-26 years. About 91% of homicides and 52% of suicides among this age group involved a firearm, the study noted.Recent evidence suggests that rural adolescents may start carrying a handgun earlier and carry with a higher frequency and duration than their urban counterparts. Handgun-carrying is associated with bullying, physical violence, and other risk factors for violence, the study notes.Preventing or delaying handgun-carrying among rural adolescents may be an important strategy for preventing firearm-related harm, authors noted.During young adulthood (ages 19-26), the association between alcohol use and heavy drinking were generally similar to adolescence.On this point, Ellyson said she was surprised that the association between heavy drinking and handgun-carrying was similar and sustained between adolescent and young adult respondents. She expected the association to weaken more or disappear with age.She identified Communities That Care as a key program for preventing these behaviors and their consequences in rural areas. The program helps communities take a broad approach to preventing problem behaviors among youth.“It has a good track record reducing alcohol consumption and violence in randomized controlled trials, and it is an evidence-based program designed for rural communities,” she said.For adolescents, the message is simple: Don’t drink alcohol or carry a handgun. Young adults, however, will need a more nuanced message, Ellyson said.“Both alcohol use and handgun-carrying become legal in young adulthood. We want to use a harm reduction approach for young adults who engage in both behaviors (drinking and handgun carrying) so they are done in a safe way,” she said.The study did not look into the why of this correlation, or whether the handgun was fired or crimes committed later. That will be for the next study, Rowhani-Rahbar said.An earlier study by Ellyson and colleagues found six distinct patterns of when and how often individuals in a rural area carry a handgun. What is so enchanting to people from North America about the Australian Bush? by Jane Ellyson A significant chunk of Alone with a Tasman Tiger is set in the Western Tasmanian wilderness during a survival competition. The Australian bush holds a certain allure for many North Americans because it offers a wild, untamed landscape that's unlike anything found on the North American continent. There are several things that make it captivating including the exotic wildlife, its remoteness, indigenous cultural heritage, and the potential for danger. The Australian bush is home to unique creatures like kangaroos, koalas, quolls, wombats, and the elusive platypus—animals most North Americans only encounter in zoos. This diverse, sometimes quirky wildlife seems both familiar yet very foreign, offering a mix of fascination and wonder. The vegetation is distinct as well. Hang on tight . . . _____ I have not read the first book in this series where a few of the characters were introduced but that did not hinder my understanding or enjoyment of this story. The author provides a list of the main characters at the beginning of the mystery. Sebastian Ward (Seb) had some time to kill before participating in a yacht race so he signed up to be a contestant on a reality show,  held in the Western Tasmanian wilderness. The object is to survive the longest before giving up or being taken out of the game for medical reasons. The show is called Alone. It started with 20 contenders but was quickly cut to 6 contestants who were each delivered to their own plot of land where they must wear a tracker, film for at least 5 hours a day, not kill any bandicoots, Tasmanian devils, platypuses or eastern quolls, and try not to kill any snakes even if they are poisonous. They also can't travel away from their plot of land or try to communicate with other contestants. They could only have clothes, a first aid kit, and 10 items selected from the things the show has provided like a blanket and cooking pot. The first half of the book follows the contestants day-by-day in their quest. Part 2 takes readers along on a yacht race adventure where dangerous things happen. Part 3 takes readers to London where clues come together to explain what happened earlier and also takes us back to the wilderness. Some days overlap and I didn't catch that at first but quickly caught on. Ms. Ellyson has written a very compelling fast-paced story. I liked that it was told continually without jumping back and forth between times and places. I completely immersed myself in the day-to-day adventure in the wilderness. The pages just flew as I was not only entertained but learned things about animals, fishing, setting traps, making camp with accommodations to sleep, and storing food.  Each contestant had different strengths and weaknesses. That could have been a book on its own. Then readers are on the yacht observing everything it and the sailors encounter to reach the end, hopefully, to win a prize. The pages were still flying. Then Part 3 brings everything together. People work together to find a missing person and find answers. Again the pages flew. Because of the length of this book, I allotted 3 days for it. but I stayed up late and read the whole thing in one night. Yes, I had a book hangover the next morning but I couldn't put it down.  It would make a great movie. Alone with a Tasman Tiger was a very entertaining read with interesting characters in unique settings that grabbed me from page 1. This being the first book I have read by this author I am looking forward to more of her work, maybe the next book in her Chic Charlie Series. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy.
